Tuesday scent of the day 2/19

Posted by Robin on 19 February 2019 241 Comments

It is Tuesday, and Carson McCullers' birthday, and there's a super snow moon. My vacation is over, and there are 29 days left until the end of winter. What fragrance are you wearing?

In honor of Karl Lagerfeld (though I imagine he had nothing to do with it) I'm wearing a dab of Fendi Furiosa. Tea at the moment is organic Colombian Breakfast from Upton.

Reminder: on 2/22 we'll celebrate Margarita Day. Wear a fragrance with lime or salt or both.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the tea towel ("Furoshiki is the traditional Japanese practise of wrapping food or gifts in cloth for transport. Our My Dear Furoshiki Towel is an absorbent cotton tea towel") is €9 at P&T.

It is indeed a shame that there is no (surviving) fantastic fragrance under his own name!

    Hello everyone!

I’m in KL Karl Lagerfeld today, the fan shaped one. A spicy attempt at besting Opium, with some Lutens-like jammy mandarin up top. So gorgeous.

I’m glad I have it but I think vintage Coco EdP is my pick. KL has a beautiful top note and heart but the drydown isn’t quite best in class.

I did just found a vintage bottle of Prelude by Balenciaga and that is a lovely oriental too. It has a bit of a Guerlanade base with fiery carnations up top. Heaven!

      Scent twins!

The top notes on mine aren’t as vivid as they used to be but the dry down is still blissful. Need to stop hoarding this one or hoarding anything, really. Time flies.

It is very lovely! I love anything with a strong clove note.

I try not to hoard! I’ve been pretty gung ho about opening even my rarest things, though I have a bottle of 60’s Chant d’Aromes parfum that I haven’t had the nerve to use.

Wearing my favorite tuberose bomb, Durga, to counteract the -2 degrees my car said it was this morning when I left the house.
Mold free Bullet-proof coffee in “The Mentalist” medium dark roast, tasty and greatly reduces tummy upsets – the only coffee I drink these days, since my allergies have been acting up in strange and not wonderful ways. Trying to reduce my exposure to allergens of all sorts…

Bullet-proof Coffee is a real thing, mold free coffee, produced by a guy selling a variety of metabolism boosters, on the basis of more or less ok science, which you may or may not find convincing. (He has supplements, books, gadgets, all sorts of stuff. I stick with the coffee.) The coffee beans themselves are washed somehow and specially stored, etc etc etc. There are several roasts , Light “Original”, Medium “The Mentalist”, Dark “Kickstarter”. I have been drinking it since right after Christmas, and I notice subtle signs that I have eliminated something that bothers me, mostly reduced digestive irritation, and a mild sense of increased well being. I had some Starbucks the other day, and presto, irritation was back for a few hours. The “Original” tastes fine and seems to to have a stronger caffeine kick, the Mentalist tastes really great to me, and the Kickstarter is very good, so it is worth it to me, as I say, to try to reduce my overall exposure to environmental irritants. It’s pricey, but you can find some of it at some CVS’s or on Amazon, or go to the Bullet-Proof website for a complete selection. (No affiliation here of any sort, beyond the review of products I like. 🙂 Put here for those who really want to know. I believe we are up to a scalding 7 degrees right now. Spring in Michigan.

Wow, thanks! I will go do some investigation. I’m not a fan of Starbucks (I find it super bitter), and am by no means any kind of coffee connoisseur, but I’m interested in learning more about the process, from growth through roasting.

          And 7F! A real heatwave you’ve got there…! ?

I showered with Jo Malone Sweet Lime and Cedar shower gel and used the matching body cream thanks to the freebie meet. I feel terrible that I didn’t keep the emails of the people I got freebies from; only the emails of those I sent freebies to. Can’t even find them in sent mail, so thanks you guys who gifted me! This is a whole giftset of Sweet Lime and Cedar and while I am really enjoying the body products, the edt doesn’t smell great on me but it does smell great on my husband. I don’t have many lime or salt scents, will have to sample search the perfume cabinet.

I wanted a rose scent today, since we are having another (short I hope) blast of winter. I’m wearing L’Ombre Dans L’Eau. When I say winter I meant that the high today is supposed to be 48. It was in the high 60s and 70s last week. I literally cannot fathom -2 degrees. When I was a teen in Central Texas we had occasional lows in the single digits, but that is as cold as I’ve ever experienced.

Welcome back Robin…..Surely we can all make it for 29 days until Spring! 🙂

Smelling like a Jordan almond in Maison Lancome Iris Dragées. Silly me didn’t realize until a few minutes ago that a Jordan almond IS a form of a dragée….LOL Afraid my high school French didn’t get me very far!

Anyhoo, I have definitely worn a very similar scent before and couldn’t figure out which one. Finally figured out it’s L’Occitane Terre de Lumière that is very close. So if you’re looking for a less expensive sugared almond, give this one a go…..

Meeting a friend for early dinner tomorrow evening & wondering if despite being laundered, my sweatshirt will still bear the residue of Floral Street’s Ylang Ylang & Espresso that I posted here about some time ago! If it does, & I my reservations about it continue, either the friend I’m meeting tomorrow (who was with me on Floral Street visit) or friend I’m seeing on Saturday (my best friend of 40 plus years) may well inherit it!

Some time ago, I posted a fragrance classification wheel by a blogger based in Singapore, KyaraZen. He is also a tea connoisseur, and now he has done a tea wheel:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BsyY8Xlgdnp/

He doesn’t update his blog anymore, but I enjoy his Instagram. I was also delighted to see that he has trained someone in the US to make incense according to classical Chinese principles. I’ve signed up for the student’s newsletter, and if I ever manage to get any of his incense, I’ll report back.

I’ve tried samples of KZ’s agarwood incense, which is exquisite, and tried to get more, but it sells out within seconds.

    Welcome home Robin!

SOTD Chanel Paris-Biarritz. It looks like this has most citrus fruits, but no lime, haha. Here is my quick review of the Chanel colognes from 2018, in the order of my testing:

Deauville – very tenacious floral citrus, I like it, good for everyday, but I would not call it refreshing, and while it’s very nice I’ve gotten tired of it after a few hours.

Venise – I’d call this Chanel water, i imagine it being dispensed out of faucets at Chanel HQ, it’s very nice, soft, delicate, this is the one I am most likely to buy, i could see myself liberally spritzing this throughout the day as a pick me up that would not be too much.

Biarritz – I like this a lot, strong citrus, somewhat masculine, does not last as well as the others, but starts off the strongest.

I was looking for another Karl Lagerfeld film and found this, with Geraldine Chaplin as Chanel. I haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but the trailer looked good.

My sniffer is slowly coming back online; I thunked the last bit of my sample of Iris Rebelle this morning.

For some reason I ended up with several samples of Lagerfeld’s Chloe back when I was a teen. I loved it but wore it sparingly, as it was a big perfume to me then. I bet one whiff of the vintage perfume could roll back forty years…

    Welcome back, Robin!

SOTD is Alien Musc Mysterioux, which my boyfriend says he can smell from upstairs. I am taking it as a compliment even though I know it isn’t meant to be. I really like it but I have to be careful to keep it on my skin and not my clothes – on fabric it dries like armpit sweat, but it’s great on ME, promise.

That is a strong one, for sure. I don’t recall getting armpit from it, but the oud majestic one gave me a urine note. Both still good, imo.

I would wear KL today, but with just a few drops left, I will just hold on to it, and sniff the bottle every now and then. My store is having a district visit today, so I will go with Coco Noir. It’s so easy to wear and makes me feel put together, when I am not.

Feeling like a very lucky duck to be wearing 0,7738. It’s my second day wearing it, and I still can’t really begin to describe it usefully. Spiced floral chypre? Aromatic resinous aldehydes? Yes, and yes. Like all Bogue perfumes, it’s complex and has a long list of notes. Even if it was possible, I’m not the right person to even attempt to unpick this beautiful creature that shifts and undulates and turns around throughout its long journey. It glows. And I keep getting little flashes of scent/sense memories…

The only downside I can see with this fragrance is how limited the quantity was (and it’s all spoken for, except for some remaining samples). I am so very glad I broke all my own rules to blind buy without hesitating.

Drinking some white monkey paw green tea. I’ve never been a big tea drinker–practically heresy in britain–but have been getting a taste for some green and some white teas recently. This is delicious.

I adore MAAI, I also looooove MEM and Tyrannosaurus Rex. (OE was nice but not a big hit, but I sill want to give it another wearing though)

I still need/want to try the others, but will probably never get my hands on all of them.

          Have you tried Gardelia?

I’ve not tried Gardelia and I think it’s unlikely I’ll be able to. Same with Noun. MAAI is a stunner, but MEM and Aeon 001 are right up high in my true love list. T-Rex makes me happy–from the roaring opening to that gorgeous drydown.

I’ve only smelled O/E briefly before… but I now have a generous sample to wear!

Do you have any perfume mules visiting the UK in the foreseeable future?

        • Jiji says:
          19 February 2019 at 5:08 pm

No Gardelia for me either i am afraid. I looked up the price of a sample on one of the decant sites and it was just waaay too expensive. Only chance of smelling it I guess is if Gardoni has a Gardelia lottery and I happen to win a bottle wahahahah. 😉

Aeon001 is beautiful as well, how could I forgot that one? it feels a bit like a distant family member of MAAI to me. Is that a weird description?

I just visited UK last month myself (London, by train, ha!), so no plans in the nearby future. And I dont know about any possible mules right now.

I am alayerin’ today. A generous NSTer suggested I layer Assam of India with some Orange Sanguine she gifted me. It was very pretty, but needed a little smudge of something… so I added the tiniest bit of Prima T–big, bold and dirty jasmine. I suspect I smell great, but this ‘layeringthing’ is a bit too much work in the long run methinks–and I am too likely to get the proportions wrong if I try to do this particular scent again.

Wearing Hermes L’Ambre des Merveilles which I find classy and warm and reassuring. Perfect for a chilly Tuesday back at work (I’m only wearing a drop, literally) and wishing I were home reading my new book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat. I’m in about nine sprays of Fleur de Peau, thanks to a very generous NSTer! It’s really unexpectedly beautiful; I see why everyone has gone crazy for this one. Such a beautiful iris!

I don’t know if it’s just very quiet on my skin or if I can’t smell it very well because I’m still kind of sick. It’s possible I’m a little iris bomb. If so, well…it’s a good thing the only person with whom I expect to be in close quarters today is my cigarette-smoking (and therefore probably olfactorily impaired) boss.

So I’m still sick 🙁 but much better than I was last week! Just a bit fuzzy in the head and clogged up everywhere. I felt well enough on Saturday to enjoy my fancy, belated Valentine’s Day dinner, and to more or less enjoy our overnight trip down to Monterey (lots of seafood! sea otters! lovely, freezing cold beach!).

    Have a good (short) week!

I keep forgetting to say: the boyfriend gave me a bottle of Black Perfecto for Valentine’s Day 🙂 He says, “It’s very lucky I like the way it smells.” He did really well–he paid attention to when I whined about how I wished I could buy it but was on a no-buy during cherry week. He got the right size (the weensy, adorable 30 mL), and he didn’t pay retail (he’s the kind of person who would just pay retail from a standard department store and never even poke around to see if it can be had for less, but he knows how much I dislike that)! Anyway, I wore that a lot last week and over the weekend 🙂

    SOTD = SL Chergui

    ❤️❤️❤️

Today, the iris decided to come to the forefront and I always get chocolate from it, probably how my nose interprets the combination of amber, hay and tobacco! I am still on my Red Package challenge with Chergui the juice being red. I have to be very creative on Friday because I cannot think of a lime or salt-forward perfume that is red or comes in red-ish packaging!

In other news, I challenged a Wegmans cashier when, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, in 2 different checkout lines (7 items or fewer and regular), when I took the little bar to separate groceries, she said “No, don’t take it. I need it.” The first time around, I looked at her quizzically but gave it back to her. The second time, which just happened this past Saturday, she did it again. This time, instead of giving it back to her, I said no, but if she tells me why she needs it, I will consider giving it to her, She immediately backed down and said it was ok. I was so annoyed that I complained at Customer Service. I don’t know what customer service will do with the info. If this happens a 3rd time, I will ask her to call the manager to the checkout line so she can explain why. I don’t care if there’s a line behind me, I just want to put a stop to her nonsense!

Neither have I until today. This morning’s spritzes were more like spritz-farts than spritz-spritz (i.e. a series of half-spritzes) so I’m thinking the aeration was the cause of the difference?

Jealous of your Chergui iris experience. It usually smells like a spice cake to me with a powdery amber dry down. The
iris note must have been sublime. Although, I do sometimes associate it with carrot cake so maybe the carroty side of iris?

Hajusuuri, whenever I encounter an urban nuisance or rudeness, I wish you were there to deal with them!

I haven’t found an effective way to communicate with people on my pet peeve, which is those who just cough into the air or on their hands in public places, thereby guaranteeing that everyone is exposed to their viruses. People are offended if I offer them a Kleenex. I wish Beyonce or Chrissy Teigen or one of the guy stars would do a cute post demonstrating CDC’s cough into the elbow trick!

The hazards of taking public transportation! I think the only way to avoid as much as you can is to wear a mask. I try to hide inside my scarf but there are many months when a scarf would look unusual (although less so than wearing a mask). And maybe keep your eyes closed as viruses can travel through mucous membranes of the eyes!

House twin! I was looking for my sample of that because (a) it’s gorgeous and (b) I read that it includes lime. Couldn’t find it so I went with Koh-i-Noor instead. It’s a bit of a scent bomb and I had to spray very lightly for fear of gassing my students today!

        Indolis is gorgeous indeed.
I remember reading in Kafkaesque’s short review a remark about the scent turning into ‘high mass/churche incense’, but I don’t get that vibe at all. On my skin its mostly jasmine, and yummy sandalwood with all sorts of green/herbal tones.

I am not familiar with Koh-i-noor. What’s it like?

I also loooove Siberian Musk and I still kick myself for not ordering it when it was still available. Then again…it was crazy crazy expensive, so maybe not so bad after all 😉

I’m pretty sure you would like it if you like Indolis. It’s equally LARGE and is a potent white floral. It has a lot of animatic musks and tonka. Other notes are listed such as our, but I don’t notice them so much. It’s gorgeous to be drenched in it but when you are, you really can’t wear it out in public. It’s got some of that skanky jasmine of Indulis but not as much, and is a lot sweeter. It also has significant sandalwood. At first I felt it was a definite no, but it’s growing on me.

Commando and still popping in to report on my sampling experience with Neroli Intense by Nicolai, which some people (well, at least one) have been curious about: To me, it’s fairly similar to Cap Neroli but without (or with much less of) the parsley note, and a curious pineapple note in mid-development. It does not feel more intense or tenacious on me than Cap Neroli. I like it, and I could imagine buying it once my Cap Neroli is all gone, but owning both seems silly to my nose. However, my husband hated it, and he rarely volunteers opinions on scents without prompting. With this one, he was walking through the house, trying to detect the source of the smell that bothered him. I don’t think he’s a big fan of Cap Neroli either, though.

On a completely separate note, not having been around last week much, Twisted Lily’s 20% off is ending today and I was considering getting one of the Ormonde Jayne Travel Sets of Woman – cost would come to app. $20 plus shipping ($3.5 or so?) per 8ml spray, with 5 sprays in the set, and I’d be looking for 4 takers. If I split a 50ml bottle, the cost would be app. $21 plus shipping but for 10ml. Any interest in this? Happy Tuesday!

My husband told me Cap Neroli smelled like a new shower curtain ?
I ended up getting NI, which he likes (as much as he “likes” anything I wear).
I found NI to be sweeter and deeper, not as green, but the longevity is terrible on me. Not sure I would replace it for that reason.

Thanks for the NI review. Because of the Cap sample you sent (Thank you) I went ahead and bought a small bottle. I like it. After the mothball (mint) note calms down on me, it’s quite a lovely fresh neroli. Not sweet. And the Neroli citrus combo really amps up and lasts a long time in the dry down.

RIP Karl Lagerfeld. And thankyou Robin for the link to the WWD article. I didn’t realize how astoundingly intelligent and witty he was till reading that piece.

Ok so I got my package from Beauty Habit today, a small bottle of Cap Neroli (my way of giving Winter the perfume finger). When I made the order I asked if they could include some samples of interesting Neroli perfumes and they totally knocked it out of the park with what they sent:
Au Pays Neroli Blanc edp Intense
    Atelier grand Neroli
    Nicolaï Neroli Intense
Longer st Barth Vanilla West Indies
    Child perfume
    Pirette perfume oil
    CSP Camille blackberry

So in addition to some beautiful Neroli perfume samples there are enough coconut beach frags to say fu to winter all the way to Spring??
Have a wonderful day/evening, fragrant friends!

Participating in the CP with Essential Parfums Mon Vetiver. It has a nice lime top note. The main reason I chose it today is because I needed a discreet perfume. I attended the first few minutes of our new employee orientation to make introductions and knew I’d be standing next to the HR rep, so I didn’t want to smell heavily of perfume. I can only smell Mon Vetiver on my shirt sleeves and not on skin at this point, 4 hours after application. I dabbed from a sample, so I’m curious what spraying it would be like. At $20 for a 10ml travel spray, it may be worth checking out since it’s a very wearable vetiver.

After going to a few open houses with my friend on Saturday, there was a condo we both loved and had a good feeling about. Well, she submitted an offer Sunday and after negotiations entered into an agreement to purchase it yesterday! I’m so excited for her. She’s technically a cash buyer because she’s doing a private mortgage through family, so she’s closing next week and moving in the first weekend of March. I can’t believe how fast it’s all happening.

Back to perfume, I got in a musk mood on Sunday and stayed in it yesterday. Sunday I wore Muscs Koublai Kahn and finished off a decant I’ve had a long time and that night I wore Marlou L’Animal Sauvage. Yesterday I finished off an old decant of Musc Ravageur that had evaporated into an oil and smelled so amazing.

I love it. I don’t actually have an orange blossom or neroli in my collection at the moment. Last year I thunked my bottle of JM Orange Blossom which was one of my go-to perfumes, very easy to wear. Nerola smells more complex and a little darker but is still easy to wear and, I think, suitable for any weather or occasion. I find the longevity to be very good. It is rather quiet, with not a lot of projection or sillage, although it is possible my nose is still out of whack from the cold I had two weeks ago. I am finding that all three Fum fragrances smell more interesting with a proper wearing (several spritzed) rather than just one tiny bit. When I first got my sample pack I put on a tiny drop of each for an initial assessment. It was enough to tell that I didn’t dislike any of them biti couldn’t properly evaluate any of them without giving it a fill wearing.

Missing my “boy” tonight. Can’t wait to see him in a few weeks. He and his gf are going to meet me and my sis in NYC for a week next month. I’m glad he’s doing well but I sure have empty nest days where I miss him so badly!

Kenzo Amour today as I am reviewing posts late in the evening. Pretty sleepless night…dry cough and stuffiness kept me awake. We had pre-bought tickets to Lego movie so went down to see that (sucking on cough drops much of the time.). Came home, drank some cough syrup and got back into bed. I’m hoping this doesn’t develop into anything more than a minor annoyance…

I may have some KL Chloe in a mini so will put that on before bed if I can find it. I went through a couple bottles way back when! I also have a current bottle, and its missing something distinctive from the original version.

Right now I have on L’eau de L’Hermine from a sample. I checked the notes, and it does contain lime so it’s fitting for the CP. Thunk!
