Tuesday scent of the day 1/22

Posted by Robin on 22 January 2019 354 Comments

It's a Tuesday in January. It's also Lord Byron's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm staying warm in a dab of Chanel Bois des Iles. Tea at the moment (my second cup) is Upton Organic Colombian Breakfast mixed with a dash of Mariage Frères French Breakfast.

Reminder: on 1/25, wear one of your favorite fragrances of this winter (unless it's summer where you are, in which case wear one of your favorite scents of this summer).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Sadly (or not) sadly, it’s more cool here than cold. I’m in Paprika Brasil today. Since I got my replacement bottle I haven’t quite finished the old bottle. My project for the week is emptying it. 🙂

I am wearing Delacourte Virgile, my favourite vanilla of the moment.

As for being sick, ’tis the season apparently. It looks like a lot of people either are sick now or were sick recently. I am recovering myself. I hope you will make a full recovery soon.

Has anyone tried the new (are they new?) Lancôme fragrances? It looks like there’s one with a marzipan note which has me intrigued.

I received SN from a NST member during a freebie meet a couple years ago (don’t remember who, but thank you!) and I’m amazed at how versatile it is. Nice in the summer with that coconut note and cosy in the winter.

Jasmins Marzipane. It’s lovely, at least to me. Dries down to an almond note, so that’s the Marzipane. What’s best is they sell it in travel spray size, so it’s not a huge commitment.

You’re making me think I should revisit my Sensuous Nude. Bought it years ago at a discounter and rarely wear it.

I have the drydown of Stephane Humbert Lucas: Blackgemstone on my skin. It’s one of my first niche purchases but I have mixed feelings about it now. The (synthetic?) smoky opening and mid is a difficult for my nose now (I use to like this opening before) but the lemon curd, cedar and myrrh dry down is cuddly and warm.

Finished off a sample of Encens Flamboyant layered on top of the shower gel. It’s definitely a winter scent to me. I still have a sample left that I’ll probably save for next winter. My annual shower gel (usually start using in Dec or Jan) will only last me another week or so, and honestly I think I like the experience of showering with it even more than wearing the perfume. The scent fills up the steamy bathroom and lingers for some time.

Back to work blahs today, but hopefully it’s a good day. I sure wish our society would agree that a four day work week is the way to go. I think we’d all be a lot happier.

This is interesting. It suggests that people who work 20 to 30 hours a week are the happiest . It suggests that living a life where you have ‘just enough’ can be more satisfying than a ‘ need more’ lifestyle.

Just had time to read the entire article, which is fantastic and sad at the same time. Sad in that people don’t inherently know that societal definitions of success are not accurate for all individuals, and mostly a lot of BS. Which means we don’t know ourselves well enough to know what really makes us “happy.” THAT is very sad.

One element I think he left out is “service.” Service to others is an essential key to being happy because it takes us out of ourselves, focusing our internal eye on the well being of others

I love to see other people laugh and smile- to simply be happy in the skin they’re in. I find my own happiness enhanced when I’m around genuinely happy folks.

I love his glasses! How fun!

Interesting that you find Encens Flamboyant to be a winter scent. I think I have tried it in all but the heat of summer, and have enjoyed it in 3 seasons so far.

In the last drops of MMM Replica Lipstick On. Sample thunk! Now I am sitting on my hands very hard and already hid my credit cards so I survive the temptation to buy at least a decant.?. I hope the insane working afternoon I will have kills my desire and impulse and I forget about it, but as long as I can smell it…..

I have tried Replica Lipstick several times when I have been lucky enough to visit a city with perfume shops and have liked it more and more each time. I would have bought it by now but I am still a bit worried that it fades too quickly? Hmmm. It is nice though…the decant would not be enough.

It is so beautiful and it has a good longevity if sprayed on clothes. It wears very close to skin and it lasted on mine for about 4 -5 hours. Not bad if you are able to re-spray during the day.

Mmmm, Robin. I go through phases of wearing Bois des Iles every day for weeks on end!

I tend to be anosmic to many Guerlain fragrances, so have never been able to smell Mitsouko or enjoy any of the generous samples a perfumerie sent me of various Guerlain fragrances a couple of years ago. But yesterday, I was looking through my samples and was able to smell Rose Nacree du Desert van Guerlain! I am in love! I’ve been wearing it all day, today. My problem is that it disappears within two hours. It lasts on fabric. Tomorrow I’m going to layer it over unscented jojoba oil and see if that helps. It is only available as an edp, but feels like a light edt, but maybe that’s just my nose. I don’t want to buy it if I can’t make it last longer… it’s too pricey for that!

Really? Wow. Guerlain’s are loud and clear for me, olfactorily speaking. But I am having the same issue with the Escentric Molecules collection. For random reasons I find myself with samples of nearly the entire collection, and can barely get a whiff off any of them.

Koyel, every day that you’ve posted about your father’s diagnosis I haven’t read it until far too late to reply. But I wanted you to know that:
      1) You and your parents have been in my thoughts.
      2) My father has had several rounds of chemo for bladder cancer and has never experienced a side effect (except for impatience)
      3) While my father dealt with his cancer I was in another country. I felt guilty and powerless until he told me how much he enjoyed the distraction and fresh energy he got when we spoke. As he said “everyone here is such a bummer”.

Hugs to you and your folks. Sorry for the numbered list, but I didn’t want to forget anything.

So is the idea that your father enjoyed listening to your stories from another country 🙂 My father said something pretty similar to what yours said, which is encouraging.

OK I’m wearing the Slumberhouse Brosse that I bought for an arm and a leg and you know what, I don’t regret it. It will not be a regular wear (so it’s good that I just got a mini) – but I think it is my favorite of the smoky/dense Baque/Jeke/Kiste family that I’ve tried. Though there is always the worry that I am trying to talk myself into liking it more? Slumberhouse perfumes rated in order by my personal desire to wear them:
    Sadanne
    Vikt
    Ore
    New Sibet
    Norne
    Brosse
    Pear & Olive
    Jeke
    Bacque
    Kiste

I wish I could say that it was, but some of them (Sadanne, Vikt, New Sibet, Pear & Olive, Grev) are so original that I think it’s worth at least sampling.

I have Norne and Kiste, and though they are incredibly different from each other–one so fierce, the other so swoonily lush–I love them equally.

Sadanne didn’t rock my world. Just too much strawberry for me, but I’m glad I was able to try it (a generous extra from an ebay seller). And I’ve not got my nose into any of the others yet… they are rare birds here in the UK.

New Sibet is one I’d dearly love to try. It sounds so intriguing.

If you like Norne and Kiste you should definitely try New Sibet. They are my three faves. Sadanne is too sweet for me and the Olive one is completely unappealing to me, although many love it. Ore, Jeke, and Baque fall somewhere in the middle.

Does anybody out there use noise cancelling earphones that they can recommend? I just need them for blocking out office-type noise ( talking, thumping around) rather than for music or microphone. Perfume is Mitsouko! It was stormy and hot here yesterday and Mitsouko was incredible. I hope you are all coping with the cold and snow.

I used to work in a trading desk-style set up. I just kept a pair of soft earplugs available that I’d use when trying to concentrate and block out the noise around me. (The kind for sleeping) I’ve also used cheap in-ear headphones (Rovking off Amazon). Not fully cancelling, but dampens the noise.

I have the Bose noise cancellation headphones, but they work better for eliminating constant background noise (i.e. jet engine roar) than voices or non-constant random noises. I think earplugs would work just as well for a lot less money. If you wore the headphones with music playing it would work better.

Do you have the in ear ones or the humongo over the ears? Mine are the in ear and it emits static that sounds like it’s coming from a tunnel.

Earphones specifically or headphones? The fancy Sonys do a better job of noise canceling without giving you a headache than the Boses do, but the Bose has better sound quality. The beautiful Bowers & Wilkins have the best sound quality of the three, and are decent at noise cancellation, but are pretty uncomfortable. Those are the three big names in fancy noise canceling headphones, and it really depends on whether you are more interested in sound quality or noise cancellation, and also whether you need them to be very comfortable and whether you are totally in love with how gorgeous the B&W ones are (they’re SO PRETTY). For me, the Sonys were the right pick, because the noise canceling aspect and comfort are most important. Also, I don’t think anyone who’s not a super audiophile can really tell that the Bose or B&W have better sound quality.

      Earphones specifically? No idea.

I cannot recommend headphones, but if you are considering ear plugs too, I recommend Hearos Ultimate Softness. Very comfortable (ear plugs tend to make my ears ache, but not these ones) and work well for ordinary (home/office) noise.

The Bose Quiet Comfort 20 earphones are the ones I swear by. They are remarkably good–and I used them in the office, on the train, and on planes. Obviously all noise cancelling tech works best with regular sounds and frequencies–like engine noise–but these just removed the sound of the person next to me who chewed and typed more loudly that you could imagine, and the person behind me who had a particularly shattering voice. And I didn’t need high volume music as well… low level was enough. Don’t know about headphones, because I can’t stand having my ears enclosed.

      p.s. you smell fabulous.

I’ve not tried Oriental Express–is it softer and fuzzier than IN, or warmer with the vanilla? I really like the dryness of the iris in Nazarena–and that it’s dry and smooth without turning austere or mean or ice-splintery, but it’s certainly not cozy.

p.s. do you like Dior Homme?

I do like Dior Homme, but only on other people or in the air. It doesn’t really smell good on me. Oriental Express really isn’t like Iris Nazerena at all, it’s just that if I were going to have one iris perfume from the ones I’ve tried, I would pick OE. Robin has a really great review on it.

I have a theory that Dior Homme does smell even better at a slight distance than at very-close-up sniff–I think it smells great on mr crikey, and vice versa. Some scents are like that. (Is it a travesty to put shalimar in that category?)

Cold, driving rain, snow, ice, single digit temps, broken trucks, early hours, long hours, well, you get the point. In theory, today is my day off, but still had to go in a couple hours ago to midwife a broodmare. It’s a filly! (That’s it’s a girl! For you non-horsey folk.) Today I’m wearing Zoologist Camel which I think is a new winter favourite scent. Spicy, warm, and elegant. I had a great class this morning–hurray! Resting up for the afternoon one. Misplaced my car key this morning and after 10 minutes’ frantic search decided I had to get an Uber to take Mom to her senior center and me to the university. It was stressful but then I kind of enjoyed having a ride to work and not having to deal with the traffic myself. Will have to do the same thing going home. I yelled at her for knocking my key down into some pit in the car and then felt very remorseful. Sometimes the stress is just too much.

That’s super kind of you! I appreciate it but will decline because I’m in limbo due to the potential release of additional Vero Kern stock. If and when it happens, a bottle of Onda VdE will be mine, and then I’m cutting myself off from perfumlandia! Enjoy your Camel! Apropos of nothing, every time I see Camel mentioned here, I have an immediate flashback to my grandfather who smoked camels back in the day. This is not a bad thing because I loved him a ton, camel cigarettes, stubble, and all. ?

Thank you. It actually proved to be kind of a good thing, in that I could be delivered right to my office building door and didn’t have to trek across campus from the parking garage, and didn’t get stressed out by driving in freeway traffic going in either direction. Unfortunately it was a bit expensive, but I’m considering doing it again just because of these pluses. Some Uber drivers aren’t as good as others but the guy this afternoon was fantastic and so kind to Mom, helping her in and out, etc. He was Vietnamese and escaped from his family on the last flight out of Saigon! He had interesting stories to tell.

Typo above–escaped “WITH” his family, not FROM it! They wound up in Minneapolis being sponsored there by a Catholic church. He was just a teenager then and hadn’t ever experienced a cold winter, and it was a record cold one, so it was quite a transition!

Love the illustration up top. My current favorite is Republic of Tea Vanilla Almond.

SOTD: Byredo Gypsy Water perfume oil. This was a score from a freebiemeet awhile back.

Over the weekend I bought a Cheer Up Buttercup bath bomb from Lush and it smells a lot like Froot Loops cereal – one of my childhood favorites! It’s currently scenting up the medicine cabinet in my bathroom at home. Mmmm. Got a sample of Sleepy lotion while I was there, and the lavender + tonka combo reminds me of SL Fourreau Noir.

Very late today because I slept till noon. Apparently, that did the trick because I’m feeling refreshed and bit more bushy tailed.

SOTD is SB Incensed. After one spray, the spritzed plugged, so I just opened it and dumped the rest on me. THUNK! I really like this one and Gypsy, which I also thunked a while back. Don’t think I need a huge bottle, let’s face it. But I DO think I will get a couple more of each in the 4ml spray size.

Now, for coffee and blueberry pancakes for breakfast! Er, Lunch…

I had Short Fused, iirc. I must have liked it, since I used up the 4ml bottle… I really can’t remember! Incensed is a bit rounder and sweeter than Short Fused, which I think is why it remains more memorable to me…?

What differences do you get from the two of them?

Short Fuse on me had other qualities like detritus, burnt ground and leaf elements that added a nice roundness to it, slightly more walk in the woods (like IO as well by Chris Rusak) so it stayed more interesting.
But when you want full on incense you can’t beat the other two. I traded with a wonderful NST’er for the 1999 and was supposed to give it to my Husband but squirreled it away for myself. 😉 I wanted to compare Mark Buxton’s incense to Bertrand’s. Teehee Both WIN! 1999 is a softer wear than Avignon. Avignon Is my true love, along with Copal Azur.

Shalimar, part of my effort to get rid of tiny samples. Last time I tried, I didn’t like it much at all. Now I love it!! Maybe it needs fairly cold weather to work for me. I’m happy that it’s a cheapie should I decide to take the plunge. Unfortunately, I don’t know if the sample was edt or edp or if that really makes a difference.

We are having nasty, cold, rainy weather in NW Arkansas right now. My cat is convinced that he needs to go outside and is wailing at the door to be let out. It will be followed 5 minutes later by him pleading to get back in. But he is the most persistent animal I know. If he wants out, he will Wear. You. Down. I am content to be inside with a travel mug full of Irish Breakfast (Trader Joe’s) and just a dab of Miss Dior le Parfum. I love it, but any more than that is totally overwhelming. Last time I wore it, my husband really didn’t like it, but I think it was because I accidentally oversprayed. Best to spray my fingers, dab a little, and then wash my hands.

Oh, this cat has had his share of high vet bills. He was treated twice in one summer for bobcat fever (a parasitic infection a little like kitty malaria–nearly died) and I recently spent over $1200 on the little bugger for acute histoplasma pneumonia, probably because there are a lot of chicken houses around where we live. He has been one expensive boy. If he didn’t drive us nuts, I’d never let him out again. And if he weren’t so darned cute and my older son didn’t dote on him so much, all I can say is there are dozens of other kitties out there waiting to be rescued, but we’re suckers around here.

Is he by any chance Siamese or part Siamese? When I was in high school, we had a Siamese who used to belong to some other people who pretty much tossed him outside and ignored him. He was the only one of our six cats who was allowed outside. We never could break him of wanting to go out, and he would howl so loudly and so insistently that we would let him out just so maintain our sanity.

What was funny is that if it was raining, he would go to each door in turn and yell to go out until you opened the door to show him that it was raining outside that door. Only after being convinced that it was raining outside ALL the doors would he quiet down.
