Tuesday scent of the day 1/8

Posted by Robin on 8 January 2019 286 Comments

Orbits Tatara Gold Cast Iron Teapot

It's Tuesday, and there are 71 days left until Spring (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway). What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: I'm accruing community project points in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Fumée d’Or.

Reminder: on 1/11 we're doing My Precious...wear a scent that references jewels or precious metals. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Orbits Tatara Gold Cast Iron Teapot (a scent of the day repeat) was from Teavana, and is no longer sold.

I’m wearing Hiris for the second day in a row. I enjoyed it so much yesterday, I just needed to repeat it.

Among all the perfumes I have, Hiris is still my go-to scent (along with Chanel No. 19 Poudre).

Hiris twins with you. But I had a horrible day, so will not wear it for a while. Some days I wish I could be a guardian of a Sardinian Island. Finished reading yesterday’s posts just now, while drinking tea and it had the same effect as a glass of red wine. Instant relaxation.
To all the gardeners out there: those heirloom tomatoes are finicky and the yield is low. My poor plants yielded about 3 tomatoes per plant, after much mollycoddling. I do best with cherry tomatoes and Sun Gold is a favourite. Co-plant with basil. And I know this is sacrilege, but for a bumper crop and enough tomatoes to give away, and make homemade ketchup and bottles of pasta sauce, plant Moneymaker. Happy Gardening!

Thank you, Amyitis. Portugal is under-rated, IMHO. For those who have not been there but have plans to go, it would’ve best to go soon.

We usually grow San Marzano and Roma varieties for sauce and an heirloom variety for eating. Some years aren’t great due to weather conditions, etc., but we have no problem growing them.
I hope tomorrow is a better day!

Thank you for the “better day” wish. And maybe the weather was the culprit and not the heirloom varieties!

Same here, we do great with some heirloom varieties. Some years some do better than others, depending on weather patterns and watering.

Adding…this year was a little weird. We had excellent production but it was all early and late…July good, August NOT as good as usual, and then we had tons of tomatoes in September right into into mid October. Brandywines were excellent, the Peruvians (my favorite, as they taste great but hold together nicely for caprese salads, whereas the Brandywines are so juicy they tend to fall apart) tasted good but did not have as nice of a texture as they do most years. We started with about 15 plants / 4-5 varieties, and something killed the orange cherry tomatoes (another favorite of mine) before it got started.

I had one of those mornings when I’m not sure what I want to wear (those don’t happen to me often) and went with Chanel Paris-Deauville in the end. It has replaced Chanel Cristalle as my ‘wear anywhere anytime’ scent. Not that it’s necessarily better, but my bottle of Cristalle is almost empty and is starting to smell a little off…

It does, although I admit it feels a bit more natural to wear when it’s warm. But as this type of a Chanel is very familiar to me and effortless to wear, I find It works for me any time of the year and it never bothers me.

First I thought you were talking about clothes and almost started envying you :). Though, recently I started having problems with deciding what to wear perfume-wise as well. Mostly, because I struggle between what I’d like to wear and what will be tolerated by the sensitive person in my office.
Paris-Deauville is very nice but for me it feels more like spring/summer perfume. Anyway, you smell great!

Ah, I’m lucky to have colleagues who seem to enjoy my perfume hobby. One really comes to appreciate these things. And I agree with you, if someone asked me, I would also say Paris-Deauville is more of a spring/summer scent (Cristalle is more of an all-rounder in that sense). But to my nose it is a very neutral fragrance, so I’m happy to wear it whenever.

I did order a bottle of Noontide Petals after yesterday’s discussion. Must not have been a big seller for Andy Tauer or it cost too much to make. In vintage BaV this morning. My dad is in surgery and mom is in the hospital with him. I am at home with the dogs doing laundry before my shower. I will wear Noontide Petals afterwards. Could someone please talk me out of buying a South Sea pearl bracelet? It’s a plain thin chain with a small pearl but it’s spending $185 that is freaking me out.

Why do you want to buy it now? Is it on some kind of an incredible sale? If no, tell yourself that you’ll decide if you want to do it in a month. On February 8th see if you still want it, can afford and can buy. Impulse jewelry shopping is a bad idea – unless you do it somewhere on a trip and spend the sum that isn’t meaningful in your budget.

I agree with Undina, unless it’s something you’ve been wanting for a long time and it’s on a super sale, I’d wait a few weeks, after the stress has passed.

Do you have 6 months worth of emergency cash socked away? I don’t mean literally but something to fall back on if something you need comes up so you don’t stress out over being able to afford it (emergency vet bills, dental bills, Amazon Prime if you have not renewed for a year?).

SOTD is The Body Shop Shea (both body butter and EDT) for one of those days at work where everybody needs something from me.

I *finally* blind-bought a bottle of Amber Flush body oil after lemming it for more than a year. It arrived yesterday and is, as I should have known, beautiful and perfect. My most-loved blind buys have been Tauers. I’m always blown away by how blazingly-fast my Tauer orders have arrived from Switzerland.

SOTD = Le Labo Vanille 44

… for an overcast rainy day. We had tiny bits of crunchy ice on the ground this morning, now it’s just a miasma of foggy grey wet. Better this than snow!

In other news, the company where my sister is a contractor is being bought. Although she has not been told about continuation or termination of services, she is starting a job search and feels that she has to bow out of our sisters vacation. She has the right priorities as we can always plan another trip. In the meantime, my other sister and I are still proceeding. As such, I have a question for the community —. Have you ever used walking sticks on a hike and if yes, what is the model of the walking sticks and would you recommend them. Thank you!

      https://www.wildernessmag.co.nz/2018s-best-walking-poles/

I think sticks are a mixed blessing depending on your fitness ( and health, such as knee or hip problems) and terrain. I find them useful if it is very steep, uneven surface or snow/ ice …but only if the track is wide enough to actually find space for them . A lot of our tramping tracks are just blazed ( markers on trees, single dirt track) and the poles can catch on surrounding roots, bushes, trees which is really annoying. If I am carrying a heavy pack they can be good for hauling the bidy up the hill. Poles add a sense of security and stability on downhills…where they are most useful in my opinion…and ease the pain to your knees. I just find them irritating on flat walks. They don’t do much for me on the flat but swing around and distract me from zoning into nature ( so I end up carrying them). So 10/10 on downhills and 0/10 on flat…but it all depends on your knees/ hips, comfort and how much weight ( backpack) you are carrying.

Also two poles are better than one so it could be an expense if you only use them once a year. I think most brands are good so try them for comfort ( hand grip) and ease/ speed of height adjustment ( you may want to adjust them during your walk if you go from steep ground to flat and so you want that process to be simple) and ease of folding away when not in use.

Thanks for the recommendation. I am definitely getting a pair and not just one stick/pole. Good points about state of health / fitness and terrain. We will be carrying day packs ( I have to limit the what if’s and not iveroack). Our lugggage will be transported for us.

Taking into consideration Vanille 44 price and current world prices for the spice itself, you are wearing something very precious today 🙂

Sorry for changes in your plans and hope your sister’s situation resolves quickly. Though, are you, well, she sure she can’t take that vacation? If she changes jobs, the next time she has a vacation might be not too soon. With the time for search and interviews (which might take some time even in this boom economy), it’ll be even longer. So, unless something extravagant money-wise was planned (which I doubt reading your question about a walking stick 🙂 ), maybe it’s wise to get some rest before she needs to be in her best form for finding the next job? Just a thought.

Good for you and best of luck to you, too! They keep threatening to require it for licensing and I don’t want to be stuck scrambling at the last minute if they actually decide to enforce it. I picked the shortest program (and least expensive) I could find. It’s going to cut into my perfume budget unfortunately, lol. I only have to do the nursing courses, though, which is great.

That’s kind of a bummer already as I’d like to not wait til the last minute. It was one of my hesitations of doing online vs in-person school. So we’ll see…

Nice piece about the 12 days of christmas, turtle doves and partridges and the current cost of buying everything listed in the song from the London Review of Books.

I saw that you had plough Monday and yesterday we had haymaking Tuesday. Not an official day but the activity on the hill opposite. It’s started a bit later than usual because it has been such a wet spring/ summer, with lots of fresh growth The grasses are higher than I have ever seen them and hayfever is going nuts. Wearing a smidgen of epidor ( epi d’or?!) from a sample ? I really like it , near the top of my buy list.

Hey that’s great. I quite often buy Herbin cartridges because they come in cute tins and nice colours ( and some perfumed) . Ink with shellac in it will clog your pen so don’t get drawing/dip pen ink. I refill my cartridges using a syringe. The Australians also make some great ink…and perfumed inks

My decant is quite old but still good. I’ll finish what I have eventually but I’m not sure I’d want more even of this version, and I have not tried it recently, so I might not like the newer version at all. But I will test it when the time comes. Probably.

Rainy day today, but no wintry mix, so I’ll take that trade off! It even hadn’t been a heavy rain, but mostly scattered bits of drizzle. Snow has been hinted at for the weekend forecast, though. I doubt that it will be much of anything. Snow usually doesn’t make an appearance in my area until later on in the winter. ❄☃

It is indeed – in addition to the general glorification of busyness or work-stress as a badge of honor. Trying not to contribute to that, I have stopped asking people if they have had a “productive break” (the implication being we should be using our break to get the work done that we didn’t have time to during the semester) and instead ask if their break was restful?

I’m continuing to document all my perfumes in my spreadsheet. I’m not including samples, decants, or bath/body products (even though bath oils can be worn as perfume), and I have not yet gotten around to all my minis, and yet I am still up to ~120 bottles and over 3000 mL of perfume. I am estimating the amount left in each bottle, so that 3000 mL is the actual amount I have, not just the original capacity of all the bottles.

I have some questions for those of you who have sold perfumes before. How/where did you sell them (eBay or some other format)? Was it worthwhile for the amount of money you cleared? What would you say is the minimum sales price that you feel makes it worthwhile, after accounting for fees, shipping, and time/energy to take photos, post the listing, watch the bids, pack and ship, etc.? Would you recommend bothering with the time and hassle of selling, or not?

I have been looking at eBay and such to get a rough idea of the possible selling price of the perfumes I am planning to get rid of; most of them are not particularly valuable individually, although the total value of multiple bottles could be worthwhile. One really got my attention, though–I have a 1 oz. bottle of Frances Denney Interlude Bath and Body Perfume from that is ~20 years old. It is used, but just barely, as it is still about 95% full. I saw completed listings for used 1/2 oz. bottles that sold for close to $100! I was surprised by this, as I don’t recall it as being very expensive when I bought it.

I can’t help with the ebay question. I can tell you that twenty years ago, I was selling perfume at a dept store and Francis Denney had relaunched Interlude, I believe in blue package? Anyway, I have never seen people so devoted to one scent. It was highly sought after, and in my area, we were the only store that carried it. It might be a decent asking price. Also, I purchased perfume once from Letgo *no affiliation. It was easy and local. No shipping, just met up at the mall.

Holy cow! That’s a lot. I have sold a few perfumes on eBay! I think your threshold for a sale being worthwhile really depends on you, your financial situation, and your tolerance for hassle. I haven’t yet had a bad experience selling, but I hear some people have. For me, it’s worthwhile if I can net at least $25. Everything I’ve sold on eBay has been at a loss (ie, I bought it for more money than I netted from selling it), but it was still worth it to me because it cleared up space AND got me some money that, uh, I could spend to get new perfume. Doing swaps and freebies on NST trained me and helped me develop an efficient method of packaging/shipping for eBay, so that by the time I sold my first bottle on eBay, it wasn’t that much of a hassle.

Do note that you will have to pay both an eBay fee AND a PayPal fee :-/ but shipping will be slightly cheaper using PayPal.

Long answer. Several years ago, I sold close to 200 bottles on eBay. I did not get in return what I paid, but I did fine. It was fun to sell. I photographed batch codes and took closeups etc. I spent (by choice) too much money on packaging, free shipping, and included freebies, like soaps and samples. I recommend to add some sort of disclaimer that scent is subjective, all noses are different…I have noticed several sellers I buy from now have something to this effect on their listings. Of all the bottles I sold, two people complained about the perfume not smelling as they remembered. I let them keep the bottles and the buyers were refunded. Both bottles were practically new and not cheap, so it was a waste of my time and money. The second time this happened, I decided I would rather give bottles away to friends on NST or donate to charity. But it really was fun, so good luck! I just let some bad apples ruin it for me. I took it too personally. ?

        200! Wow!

Well, as a beneficiary of your shift to giving bottles away to NSTers, I can’t get too mad at your bad apples. But good for you for selling so much!!!

It was actually fun to get the listing ready. I’d have some cute background, lighting…omg. It was an accumulation of many years’ worth of perfume to sell. But it’s more meaningful to share here with people such as yourself. I’ve enjoyed being a swapper with you!

            Awww <3 me too, flopper!

I'm so lazy. My boyfriend has a fancy camera with great focus settings, so that's what I used to take super-emo pics of my bottles. But I was too lazy to make cute backgrounds–I just took pics on wooden tables in daylight. I'd love to see pics of your bottles, if you saved them 🙂

I’ve got a good camera, but I never seem to be able to get the lighting and background right to get good pics. I thought if a few of the bottles were worth selling, I could use the money to help pay for one of my other hobbies, such as attending music workshops. I don’t expect to get back as much as I paid for the bottles–after all, they are used, and I don’t have the original boxes for most of them–but anything I would get would be more than I would get from them just sitting around my house unused. I have enjoyed swapping on NST, but I really need to reduce the amount of perfume I have, so I need to either give bottles away or swap waaay down (a bottle for a small decant, for example, or several bottles for one bottles). I have considered trying to swap for something other than perfume, but I don’t really know what.

Many I sold didn’t have boxes, some were about 90% full and they sold. I say go for it, because the money you make is money you can use for other things! At the end of the day, people are still nice out there ? I might try selling again.

Checking in quite late tonight; I sprayed on some Cuir de Lancome as my SOTE after a very busy day.

My hubby is feeling a bit under the weather with a sore throat. He was kind of in a mood I guess as I jokingly asked him if he had his “poopy-pants” on when he didn’t want any chocolate; he nearly bit my head off. Men are such babies!

Or some decide to be all macho and refuse to see a doctor when they ought to. ?
