Friday scent of the day 1/4

Posted by Robin on 4 January 2019 203 Comments

It's Friday! Also the 11th day of Christmas (pipers piping), plus World Braille Day and Michael Stipe's birthday. Our community project for today: wear a fragrance to match Living Coral, Pantone's color of the year for 2019.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Some colors immediately call to mind scent associations, and vice versa, but Living Coral does nothing for me. I went the literal route with Parfums de Nicolaï L’Eau Corail.

Reminder: on 1/11 we're doing My Precious...wear a scent that references jewels or precious metals. Suggested by thegoddessrena.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2019, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good morning, everyone! I’m in a tiny spritz of Montserrat for the CP this week.
The rain has finally left us, so I’ll take a walk today with the puppygirl and maybe get to the grocery store. ToTM is FM Eros.

My shirt today is darn close tothat colour. I got Safran Troublant on it this morning while I was liberally overspraying. Does that count?

I thought about Safran Troublant but after I saw the saffron in the basement (partial food storage since it is much colder there), I switched gears.

I’m wearing MFK Petit Matin, since I’m working on my personal sampling project. I really needed something aromatic after wearing a lot of very sweet scents this week. In honor of the CP I am wearing a coral colored thermal tee.

I’m in Mojito Chypre today, bright strawberry and mint. Pleasingly artificial and a lot of fun. I was excited to see that LT reviewed this one highly, though that’s only important when we agree. 😉

I was going to wear a Sophia Grojsman for the poll since that seems perfect for her plush fruity style. However, my hand grabbed MC once in the closet. Who am I to argue?

SOTD for me is American Perfumer Colorado (by DSH; from a sample that came with my bottle of Desert Flower). I figure there must be some coral tones somewhere in the Colorado landscape. This is an interesting scent that does elicit some vivid mental images, but I don’t love it the way I love Desert Flower.

In Perry Ellis 360 Coral. A sweet, creamy fruity scent. Not interesting at all. I sprayed the whole 1ml sample, so a good thunk it is.

    SotD is 31 Rue Cambon
Edt, small decant, from a swap with a lovely NSTer

I am not particularly fond of the powderiness in the opening, but…..phase 2 when it gets more spicy and warmer is greeaaat. Good for office as well dont you think?

Still suffering from that darn cold. The clogged nose is gone, but I am now in the coughing phase. Ive hardly slept for three nights.
Also back to work this week. Urgh.

    In good news:
    Its friday

I found a nice red matte lipstick, rouge d’armani (no 400)

And tonight diner with my husband in a local, small and somewhat fancy restaurant!

That colour is amazing. Also, amazing what a good lipstick can do.

I am tired and it shows, but i dont like wearing foundation/concealer. But two swipes of red and my face suddenly looked kinda fresh and kinda attractive again haha.

        What formula do you have?
I already had two reds in a more shimmery/creamy formula, so a matte was what I was looking for….

I chose Eau des Merveilles layered with Eau Claire des Merveilles (Robin’s patented combination) with the thought that the Eau Claire would creamy-up the orange in the Eau and thus produce coral. Partial points? Who cares – I smell lovely. 🙂

TF Shanghai Lily for me today. The perfume is a pretty pinkish-red that exactly matches the coral paint color (luckily I have a decant because the bottle is too dark to see through). No idea if the smell actually matches the color – my brain doesn’t work that way.

I love that color! In honor of the project, I am wearing a sweater that has some areas of the color, a lipstick that is as bright as Living Coral, but a bit more orange, and rather a lot of Bergamote Soleil. I think Pomelo Paradise would have worked slightly better, but Bergamote is what I had at hand.

Like several people yesterday, the description for this color made me roll my eyes so far back that I lost them, but it reminded me of the goofy copy for LVEB, whose juice is just about a shade off, so I’m wearing that.

Atelier Pomelo Paradis. The bottle is close to the Pantone coral as is the flesh of some pomelos.

Happy New Year to all. I’ve started to take my perfumes out of storage where they lived for close to a year while we were in the process of moving. Becoming reacquainted with them is the best part of reorganizing.

Still snuggled under the covers, and thinking about staying here for a couple more hours. I didn’t get much sleep because I somehow forgot how noisy cities were while out in the sticks for the past few weeks.

It’s cool (some might say “cold”), and rain is tinkling on my roof. There is zero motivation to get up…! I’m probably going to wear Ummagumma again because it’s just perfect.

Saw your reply from yesterday about your BP Gourmand ordeal. I remember when you looked it up at TL . I actually was there shortly before Xmas and asked him about his website, out of stock stuff etc. It’s not a great site, functionally, either. He’s actually in the process of working with a web designer guy to either clean up or create a better website. So hopefully what he currently carries will be reflected on the website. Which I’m glad to hear since I was worried that maybe business wasn’t hopping and he was looking to close. That would be sad.

I love that colour as well. SOTD is Rosa Flamenca the closest I could get to it. I’m crap at colour scent associations, except obvious ones, like green, purple and the like.

Curious: What makes purple more obvious to you than coral? They seem equally obvious or nonobvious to me. What are some obviously purple scents to you?

I’m sure it is odd. Mon Parfum Chéri par Camille comes to mind immediately. The bottle obviously, but it smells of plums as well, and they are purple. I think moody, dark would fit it quite as well, but somehow purple hits the spot.
But I’m with you that green is a much easier association.

I wonder if it’s easier to see a “green” scent because humans have twice as many receptors for the color green visually. It seems we would be more likely or more easily “see” something as green even though we’re not actually “seeing” anything. Or maybe we have more associations with the color green due to evolution, so it’s easier to connect to…?

That color makes me think of the tropics and islands in the Caribbean so I went with OJ Frangipani. I looked up frangipani flowers and, as it turns out, many of them are close to that shade. Anyway, I hardly ever wear it in the cold weather and I’m really enjoying it today.

Alarm went off at 4:55 am after a night of bad and intermittent sleep. Knocked over my full cup of coffee in the bathroom as I stumbled around. Realized it was going to be one of those fumble fingers mornings, so I needed to slow down or I’d do real damage.

Twilly was the no-brainer again. It’s faded now, so I may add something different or top up. Trying to rid myself of a headache. TGIF.

Was thinking I’d wear BF Montserrat like Nancyleandros, but gave it a quick sniff and decided I wanted something with more heft, so went with Hendley Amora. It’s more red to me in smell, but it’s blindingly cheerful, just like that color!

Tempo is winning me over, I’ll admit!

There’s another patchouli that I wish I could compare it to — Krigler’s Lovely Patchouli 55… Smelled that one years ago at The Plaza, but back then I was too chicken to try to wheedle a sample (H.’s lessons hadn’t quite kicked in…), and $20 for a 2 ml from their website… Well, das esspensive for me…

Part of the label of my travel spray of Smell Bent 1999 is pretty darn close to Living Coral, so that is my SOtD. The scent is a good match too – bright, tart, and slightly sweet grapefruit wirh a fizzy effervescence. It’s delightful to wear.

I ended up not being able to use my neti pot yesterday because I forgot to replenish my stash of saline packets at work. I like to neti in the private bathroom here. Anyway, I ended up feeling pretty terrible last night. I was super tired with a bad sinus headache and my throat and mouth were really dry. I ended up going to bed early and slept really deeply. Luckily I felt a lot better when I woke up this morning, and I should continue to improve after using my neti pot.

I have a Zyllion massager arriving tonight from Amazon and my extra large new heating pad arrived yesterday, so I look forward to a weekend of self care!

I would have worn Mitsouko by Guerlain (peach note) or vintage Chanel Cristalle EDP (honey note) – that’s the closest I could come to the coral theme!
If anyone loves coral-colored lipsticks (a favorite of mine). Face Stockholm has a sheer lipstick called Friendship, a warm/coral/sheer lipstick that is gorgeous on and very easy to wear.

Got the standard Error 403 Perfume not Found in my quest to find something coral in town yesterday. I had decided Bulgari would be my best bet ( Omnia or similar) but nothing doing. Instead I’m comparing two Jo Malones in a sniff-off: snowdrop and white moss vs. ginger and nutmeg. Both are spicy colognes but the ginger is brisker. Going to be hot today. All the untamed honeysuckle is in flower along our street , magic.

Mmm, love the scent of honeysuckle. When I was a kid, my neighbor had one growing up the post of the front porch, and the neighbor girl and I would pull the flowers off the vine, bite the ends off, and suck out the juice. Yummy.

I think of coral as a color of all softness. Most of my scents have a bit of a bite at the top, but I chose Carnal Flower, because tuberose mellows into a soft warm scent on me.

It did not occur to me to think of a scent with coral in the name. Congrats to those who found them.

Now, though, after a trip to Sephora to exchange one of my daughter’s Christmas presents, I am wearing EdM Bleau. I am really digging this with the cool temps and bright sunshine.

Back home now in Theo Fennel, which could fit the CP in a very dark and sexy coral.

I’m just not feeling the Living Coral color today…..it’s been raining every single day for at least a week, so I’m feeling a definite gray/dreary vibe ’round here. But at least it’s not snow and ice!

But in the spirit of the challenge, I went with a scent that doesn’t necessarily make me picture “coral”, but does provide Pantone’s description of “comfort and buoyancy” on a dreary rainy day….. Chanel Allure EdT! Such a soft, warm, huggable scent!

When I think of the word “coral”, I think of sunsets on the beach. Plus the word “peach” which I guess is more pink? I was considering wearing vintage Chaldee, which has a warm beachy vibe at times but I’m not feeling it today. Nectarine Blossom and Honey might work, but I only have a sample and I’m not motivated to surf The Sample Sea. Then I thought of Demeter’s Salt Air cuz coral=ocean=salt air, or maybe Bronze Goddess or Terracotta. Then I wondered if we’d see more coral clothing out in the wild this year, and what ever happened to the color apricot? I swear that’s a color, isn’t it? Anyway, I think I’ll just go eat some pickled ginger now which if it was dyed pink would kinda match. That’s as far as I’ve gotten with this project. 😉

I love color, colors, which is a ridiculously general thing to write. But this week’s challenge has been making me think about why I so rarely where them. (I’m a black and gray person, although today I do have a sort of dark coral sweater on. It’s pretty neutral.) Anyway, I think it is the dyes used in most cloth. Just not great, right? I mean, sometimes you will find something amazing, but often they feel so far from life, nature, the world around me, that I can’t invest.

Anyway, I lost on the challenge. Wearing PdE Equistrius, which I love the first hour or so of and wish it lasted longer.

I knew immediately which fragrance I would wear for today’s CP that would embody the ‘sociable, spirited, engaging, lighthearted activity, optimism, and joyful pursuits’ aspects of Pantone’s Living Coral, but I was not looking forward to it since neither this color nor this fragrance is one I would wear on the 11th day of Christmas!

I live in the midwest U.S.A. and fully enjoy our four seasons. Nothing satisfies my soul as being in harmony with nature outside my window, so I truly enjoy changing my home decor, the colors I wear both in clothing and makeup, and my fragrances as well as the seasons change. Rarely is there a scent that works for me in summer as well as in winter – AG Songes is one of those very few.

Echoing some of Gail’s thoughts yesterday, coral is a go-to color for me in summer, along with turquoise; colors that I feel flatter me as I tan easily and my hair gets bleached by the sun. Summer is filled with swimming, gardening, camping, outdoor music concerts, any activity that will take me outdoors. And one of my favorite fragrances for those summertime activities is Bvlgari Omnia Coral. To me it embodies the playful fun spirit of all of those qualities listed above, so I had to wear it today. Luckily, we’re enjoying a very rare January day with full sunshine and a very unseasonable high of 47 degrees so I can pretend it’s just a teeny, weeny bit like summer. But I will confess, once the sun goes down, I will be switching to Dame Perfumery Chocolate Man, which is perfect for the 11th day of Christmas – I’m still celebrating!

On the Little Bear Luna front, it appears she’s in heat again! Yikes, she’s not even 6 months old yet! I read on the Internet that if a cat is not mated when she goes into heat she could do so again within 14 days, so that appears what has happened – she was in heat for the first time just before Christmas. I’ve already had on my to-do list to call the vet as soon as the holidays were over, so I will certainly do so early next week.

Wishing everyone a wonderful first weekend of the New Year as we take down holiday decorations and attempt to distract a kitten from her interest in finding a boyfriend!

Oh, poor little kitty! And poor you, having to deal with that kind of crazy! Good thing you have perfume to help cope.

    Hello NST! TGIF!

SOTD = Guerlain Mahora, from the decant stash. I did it! I found a perfume match for Living Color. At least, the opening of Mahora works. It had a pop of pinky-orange right after I sprayed it, then the perfume shifted to something with more yellow. A lot like watching the sun rise, IMO. ???

Guerlain’s Terracotta was also a possibility, but the Mahora was the first thing I sniffed this morning. I was pleased to have a perfumed “backup” choice if necessary. ?

SOTD = Hermes Twilly, dirtied up with Hiram Green Hyde

Today’s CP was challenging and I copied LizzieB’s idea. It seems like Hermes was a choice for a good number of us…and so to quote tiffanie — “Yes to Hermes!”

I would have worn Amouage Bracken Woman but it’s a springish fragrance to me. I briefly considered V&R Bonbon, but decided it was too pink. I also had LVEB in my barely used atomizer sample container but nah.

Wishing everyone a happy new year. I have a late Christmas party to go to tomorrow and I have to finish wrapping the gifts.

I had thought of BonBon too, but, yeah… to pink! Have fun tomorrow!

Ha, I like the sound of dirty Twilly!

I’ve been wearing Jour d’Hermes often lately, must wear EdM soon.

      Yes to Hermes!

This was a tough one even though I love that color. I was going to go with The Different Company Jasmin De Nuit. It’s a full, rich, spicy jasmine, probably the only jasmine-centric scent I really like and the juice is a dark coral color. But I saw someone mention Sophia Grojsman and decided on my vintage Tresor mini instead. Fits the mood just about right and the box and juice are both coral colored.

Definately guilty of judging a book by its cover here, but, wearing Jean Patou Sira des Indes (juice matches our color of the year). I’m always surprised how much I like this one because it leans too sweet, tropical and fruity for my taste and yet, it’s lovely! Such a summery scent = coral for me.

Great choice! I also love it even though I don’t wear it often.

I am wearing Guerlain Insolence edt tonight. The color of the juice has morphed into a coral-ish shade, so thats how I arrived at my SOTE. Maybe 1/2 points? Plus its a pretty fun fragrance!

Hi Jalapeno! We are house twins, and thanks for the points!

I also thought of Terracotta, but that bottle was put away in my storage bin under the bed. I was too lazy to get it out plus my legs are too sore from doing yoga earlier this week.

Full points! I would have worn Insolence today if I could find my bottle. It’s in a box somewhere . . .

My Panetone pick is : And the World is Yours, by A Lab On Fire.
Vibrant like this coral color, living & breathing.
A scent with deprh and pureness.
Late to the party and I have a good bit of catching up to do and no more travel to preoccupy me.
    Happy weekend All.
