Lazy weekend poll ~ guilty pleasures, episode 4

Posted by Robin on 6 October 2018 228 Comments

An overdue repeat of our guilty pleasures poll: tell us about your guilty (perfume) pleasures, that is, fragrances you love even though you (or others?) think maybe you shouldn’t.

Another way of stating it might be “the perfumes you don’t usually admit you own”.

Mine would be Elizabeth Taylor Black Pearl, which I love for its peach note. But any Liz perfume seems a tad, well, vulgar.
In other news–I went back yesterday and bought the new Lutens, Participe Passe!! Loving it! People you must try it. I get a brief scent of celery and fresh fruit (bergamot is listed) and then it goes very balsamic and mellow, with strong aspects of caramel and patchouli, but not really too sweet. It’s a calm scent and not really gourmand despite the maple syrup aspect. It’s almost medicinal, but in a nice way–I want to lather it all over like it’s some elegant kind of muscle rub. It’s going to be fun to wear it in cooler weather–we’re still hitting the 90’s here.

Lemming it now. I’m hoping it’s part of the regular line and not the uber-expensive black-gold line!

Good 4 U Calypso- it was a a rubber on me. Blind bought it and had to return it- I had cumin nothing more all day.
In Hermessence Cedre Sambac and I am really enjoying the nice bitter note that the cedar adds to this lovely jasmine sambac. And I can actually smell it 2 hours after application .
      Happy Sunday All.

I have a mini. It is a curiousity for me too. I think if it hadn’t gotten so much bad press, I would have sniffed it once and thought it was interesting but didn’t suit me. As it is a famous failure (I love the bottle!) I feel compelled to like it, just to be ornery. ????????????

See, it’s definitely not bad enough for all the hate; just some big tropical flowers! And since I abhor Champs-Elysees (ugh!) and they’re always mentioned together, I like Mahora by comparison. It isn’t something I reach for often, though.

I don’t think there is a single perfume, necessarily, that I feel guilty about. When the guilt demon strikes – and that is a rare thing when it comes to perfume – it’s usually related to the sheer quantity of perfume I own, and the thought that some of it is going to waste.

I can’t think of a single perfume I own that I find embarrassing. On the other hand, I am always a bit embarrassed to admit I’m wearing clothing from Victoria’s Secret. (As I am at this moment.)

SOTD is vintage Balenciaga Le Dix. End of my sample but I don’t think I need to hunt down any more.

Would you feel the same about Victoria’s Secret fragrances? I think I’d feel a bit guilty about owning those and about, say, Brittney Spears fragrances. Which is completely silly of me as I wholeheartedly believe in wearing what you love and not judging fragrances by the label or worrying about what others think.

I would definitely feel that way about VS fragrances! But luckily they are all overwhelmingly sweet, so for the moment, I’m safe.

I agree with you in principle, though :)

The original Victoria Secret fragrance (Victoria) was stunning. Not sure of what the notes were but it smelled of rose and amber to me. Mals and I were both fans of it. The bottle matched the gorgeousness of the fragrance.

Recently bought two bottles for $12 each. They had nostalgic qualities for me as I seem to recall sniffing them in a department store as a kid: Acqua di Selva and Pino Silvestre. Purchase of the latter was sort of a personal homage to Mr. Sillage, who featured it in one of his last videos. I’m enjoying both of them. Cheap, guilty pleasures.

No perfume guilty pleasures (unless you count wearing perfume around “all natural” folks and not pointing it out, so they can’t convince themselves they’re “allergic” to it).

So, I will admit that I don’t usually admit to sneaking baked potatoes, chicken, and asparagus (or similar fare) to hockey games so I don’t have to eat stadium food. I only feel guilty when I think someone might catch me, though . . .

We have two stadiums here in Portland, and the older one literally doesn’t serve food I can eat. Nothing. I am lactose intolerant, and I choose to not eat pork or beef. So, no pizza, burger or hot dog for me! Zero meal choices, unless you count popcorn as a meal, I guess!

So, I only feel kinda guilty sneaking in food. Mostly, I’d just feel sheepish if I got caught. ☺️

Mr. Spicebomb and I go up there for baseball games sometimes, and we always eat before the game. Sounds like I should wait until we’re inside and give it a try some time! (The cost is ALWAYS a thing. $5 for a bottle of water?!)

My guilty pleasures are my more expensive frags. As my L’heure Bleue parfum winds down, I feel very indulgent.

No perfume on yet, but sprayed my bottle Yatagan (whew, finally won that battle with autocorrect) once, craving that crisp pine scent this AM. I have an appt at the DMV today to renew my license… and just shamelessly lied about my weight filling out the online form. Oh well. I am probably in good (zaftig!) company. Might be a Chinchilla perfume day . . . good for dealing with bureaucracy and my picayune perjury.

For this renewal I am mandated to get a RealID driver’s license, which I have to do in person. I got the notice about the RealID requirement about two months ago (my license expires the end of Oct) and immediately tried 4 DMV offices before I found one where I could make an appointment before my license expires!

Ha, I just did the RealId drama this week. And did not find out til I got to the DMV that you actually *must* fill out the online application first, before you even get in line. &%$&^%$&^ Good thing I got there 30 minutes early, I barely made my appointment what with standing in line, getting rejected since I hadn’t filled out the application yet, filling out the dang application on my phone, standing in line again, then standing in line to have my documents approved, then the appointment, then getting my photo taken…

And yes, I fudged my weight too :)

Commando right this moment. Work nearly gave me a heart attack. The new schedule comes out on Friday on the employee website and I couldn’t see my schedule. Ended up calling my department to see if I had a vacation scheduled that I forgot about or was I fired. Turns out that the employee website wasn’t showing every employee schedule. Yes, I still have a job to pay bills and fund my Sephora and perfume habit.

Yikes! Glad that it was just a glitch. At my workplace, once a future-dated termination is entered in the HR information system, the employee loses the ability to print anything. We all joke around (targeting ourselves only) if we have trouble printing that maybe we have been RIFed and had not yet been told.

For those not familiar, RIF stands for Reduction in Force or layoff or made redundant.

Up until recently, I would have said Black Opium was my guilty pleasure. I had to stop wearing it though, do to association. I still like to sniff it though. Yesterday I had on a lovely combination of Aura and Addict, and a customer stopped to ask what I was wearing. This is when I feel guilty. In my neck of the woods, people don’t spend alot of money on perfume. I panicked because I didn’t dare say DIOR Addict. So I said it’s called Aura, it was a gift. She said it smelled fancy and was probably expensive. I just said I didn’t know. My sotd is No. 19.. because I’m working a Saturday night, which are usually crazy. Hope everyone has a great weekend ????

I don’t really have any guilty pleasures in terms of perfumes I’m embarrassed to own. Amount I’ve spent on perfume? Yeah, I’ve been indulgent. But the one thing I am embarrassed about is the size of my Odeur 53 bottle. 200 ml is just ridiculous – I can barely hold the bottle in one hand. Oh well, I love it. And I’m wearing it right now!

I’m interested! Somehow I’ve never smelled this one. Can someone describe it? I love vetiver, especially Sycomore and frags where it’s a main secondary note (like recent Chanel 19 edps).

Dior lists only two notes: vetiver and coffee. It’s part of their Collection Prive (though it never seems to be available in the US — my bottle was muled from Paris), and thus: smooth, subtle, and sophisticated.

SOTD = Solstice Scents Pumpkin Spice Latte

I don’t get a lot of pumpkin spice but yay for the coffee.

    Mall Musings
    – Nordstrom just started carrying Eastpak backpacks. They are no nonsense one compartment inside and one outside pocket. That’s it. It was a blue Eastpak backpack I had first term freshman year that sparked a conversation with someone who has been a friend from that day forward. It’s been multiple decades!
    – Just in time for cold and flu season, a germinator called Disney Junior Play Zone
    – Food Court with 20+ vendors: every vendor is doing brisk business but the only one with a line? Chick-fil-A!

    Rants of the Day:
    – The Target Baby Registry – online and in-store are not integrated. I went to a Target, pulled up the registry, found the item which was online only. An SA said she can place the order BUT I need to give her the shipping info. I did not have it on hand but if the platforms were integrated, I would not have to provide the shipping info since it’s hidden info in the registry. I was going to give her the most expensive item on her list so Target basically list a sale. I will order it elsewhere.

    – I should have known better — I had udon noodle soup at the food court. The picture had 4 silver dollar sized shrimp. My bowl had 5 nickel sized shrimp. I felt like dumping the rest of my soup in front of the store but I’m afraid someone may slip and fall.

CFA is always packed at our mall, too. I’m a fan of the kid’s meals…you can get grilled chicken strips, dipping sauce, fresh fruit and milk or apple juice for about four bucks! It makes my inner seven year old very happy. ????

Ha! I never thought to order the kid’s meal. That sounds lik a good deal. The other place that has really good deals is Kentucky Fried Chicken. I go there rarely but when I do, I usually get the grilled. Watch out for the Chicken Pot Pie – someone who was eating one returned to the cashier and asked where’s the chicken. He got a new pie.

I have a giant 100ml bottle of Aramis New West. I wouldn’t say I feel guilty about it, maybe a bit silly?

Testing out Le Labo’s Iris 39 today. It’s a very complex iris, green and rooty and not really a floral at all. It’s an impressive scent and I’m glad I tried it, but it’s not really me.

Happy weekend all! I’ve barely kept up with NST over the last few weeks, it’s been very busy at work (a whole new level of crazy), and then I caught a cold. I think I’m back on an even keel now, and eating breakfast in the last traces of last night’s Beloved.

I’m very slowly removing layers of wallpaper in the bedroom, and I think I will accompany that with 24 Faubourg – I do enjoy the sense of wild extravagance that goes with wearing expensive perfume to do housework :)

Like a few others, I’m more ashamed to admit how much I’ve spent on perfume over the last nearly 10 years – particularly if I contemplate the postage to this part of the world!!

Not perfume-related but your comment reminded me of my mom’s comment yesterday about being undercharged for 2 large papayas. I told her that because she was there with her helper whom she pays by the hour, the papaya probably cost 5x more than she actually paid at the grocery.

I must have THUNKED four or five bottles of it in my day. I don’t see is as trashy at all. It’s a very well done vanilla back in the day when very few were doing vanilla. “wayyyyyyy in the back of the display cabinet” – reminds me of shopping at the Five & Below store with my nephew when he was a lot younger. I told him I will buy him one item of his choice. After he narrowed down his choices to 2 or 3, he asked if I would consider giving him 2 items and I said no (I tried not to spoil him). Since he knew that my dad will go with him if he asked, he kept his 2nd and 3rd choices in the back of the display and in the wrong section.

What fun, and yes, I have some guilty pleasure perfumes, I wear them at home: whisper today I am wearing Miss Dior Le Parfum.
Balenciaga Rumba, a good perfume I think, but so huge, I don’t wear it outside. Like Calypso I enjoy ET Black Pearls, I even chased a vintage one in the frosted bottle and White Diamonds when the mood strikes me. I also like several Avon perfumes, Occur! is even a love and I can enjoy guilt-free moneywise.

Not sure I have any perfumes that are guilty pleasures — maybe Lady Gaga Eau de Gaga counts? But I certainly have some whose names I find too embarrassing to utter. House of Matriarch Sex Magic and Tom Ford FF come to mind. Guerlain Purple Fantasy is pretty stupid too. Fortunately nobody ever asks me what perfume I’m wearing, anyway.

I am wearing Biehl AL 01, which has some fruit, but is spicy, too and I am sure there are others who appreciate it, so I am not counting it as a guilty pleasure. However, another fruity one that does fit the category and that I will admit to enjoying from time to time is Parfums DelRae Emotionelle. Sometimes I just need some of that melon! Also, I will confess that ‘way back in its day, I liked Debbie Gibson Electric Youth and not too long ago, I spotted a bottle for a reasonable price at one of the discounters, and I bought it. Yes, I do wear that one when the mood is right, too!

Whoa! Left work this morning to discover there was snow on the mountains! It was just 90F the other day, and now there’s snow at higher elevations. I’m not mad about it!???? Beautiful brisk sunny day which I mostly missed because of that thing called sleep.

Still smelling faintly of PG Indochine, but might wear l’eau de Crypt water after this afternoon’s ablutions. To me, this just shouts “life is busting out all over!” so I’m not understanding how anyone can smell this and get dank, cold, dark, crypt-like associations…

One down, three to go! Happy weekend to all✌????

I have a bottle of a, I dunno, maybe 10 year old Avon perfume called “Just Play.” Dumb name, boring bottle, and the juice is nothing special, but I love it anyway. Hey, the heart wants what it wants.

Did anyone else here in the States notice that Jeopardy! had a perfume category yesterday? That amused me greatly.

Oh, I do have at least 2 bottles of perfume that would qualify as “guilty pleasures”: Baby Phat’s Goddess and Baby Phat’s Golden Goddess. I used to wear them quite a bit, but I haven’t hauled them out in ages.

SOTD = back in Mitsouko EdP again today. I needed its warrior woman aspect that it can have on me.

I’ve been testing Gallivant Istanbul all day and really enjoying it. It’s one of those where the sillage hovers about 8 inches above the skin. Press my nose to my wrist and get almost nothing, but sit still and let it waft, and it’s just lovely.

I usually find something like that at TJ Maxx. I’ll walk around the store with a perfume then force myself to put it back before checking out. I usually don’t regret it because I am almost always lemming something else.
I think that’s how I’ve accumulated at least 25 bars of scented soap. I bought Smidt’s Vanilla Rose soap and natural deodorant today at Target. I went in for one thing. Hopeless….

Me too! About the soaps that is. I am able to rationalize the purchases because the cost is low and the paper wrapping the outside of the soap is so pretty! I have a drawer with a bunch of those soaps. This round I could not justify buying any more bars of soap, but I did pick up a bottle of “Evelyn Rose” shower gel by Crabtree and Evelyn for a song.

My standard answer for this question is usually something trashy and over-the-top like Gucci Rush, but if I’m being honest, I don’t truly feel guilty for loving it. It has some classic chypre bone structure beneath the neon haze and fruity noise, and I just plain love how it smells. (In small doses, of course.)

My *actual* fragrance guilty pleasure is Versace Dylan Blue, which has garnered withering reviews on this site and many others. (I love Kevin’s reviews always, though, and it was an entertaining read!) It’s mass-market dreck that shan’t be championed by a true perfumista, but hell, the stuff just smells good, and works in every season and for every occasion. I received a sample in a Sephora bag and promptly went back to buy the 10ml travel size, which is more than half empty. Life’s too short to feel guilty about pleasures, least of all something as ephermal as perfume!

I think my one guilty pleasure perfume would be Calvin Klein Obsession. It’s big, it’s an 80’s cliche, and it’s sooo good. I feel a little less guilty about loving it since discovering NST and other NSTers who love it too.

We are out of town this weekend visiting the college kids, or “the bigs” as we used to call them when madtownteen was a toddler. Lol. We are staying at the cutest little Airbnb and yesterday was an almost perfect day if the weather just would have been a little better. Today is my oldest child’s birthday and I’m so glad I get to spend some of it with him. Glad too that at 22 he still wants to spend some of it with us.☺️I even brought along my homemade chocolate cake that I have been making for him since his first birthday.

SotWeekend has been my travel spray of Narciso edt- Black Cube.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone!

I am going to stick my neck out and say I too love Obsession. While everyone was wearing CKone and Gibson Electric Youth, my first perfume purchase was Obsession. Recently during a swap I got a vintage decant of Obsession and its everything I remember and more. I just put some on and smell wonderful. Its also the reason I think I love Coco and Cristalle so much…its gives me nostalgia. Take care and have fun with your family. Cheers!

I literally found a small bottle of Faberge Aphrodesia on the sidewalk, with a bunch of other stuff someone was getting rid of. I have no idea how old it is. When I opened the bottle and sniffed it, it smelled like I remembered it from Junior High! And on me, it smelled surprisingly carnation forward and really delicious. Now I’m wearing it again and I think it’s better on me than most of the modern perfumes I’ve tried. I find it surprisingly sophisticated It makes me feel a bit strange, though, remembering my thirteen year old self having that drug store set of Tigress, Wood Hue, and Aphrodesia, way, way back in the day (a time I definitely don’t want to revisit).

My guilty scent pleasures are not my own fragrances but my husband’s! He is a very down to earth, no nonsense guy, and he rotates between three drugstore aftershaves: Mennen Skin Bracer, Brut, and Old Spice. I love the way they smell on him! I’ve bought him a couple of upscale fragrances (one Penhaligon’s, one SL) and he was politely appreciative, but he stills wears his drugstore cheapies, and I’m not complaining. Once, I was browsing among men’s scents for him at a department store; the SA helping me asked what he normally wears, and when I told him, the SA literally shuddered, lol.
