Le Labo Tonka 25 ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 3 October 2018 17 Comments

Niche line Le Labo will launch Tonka 25, a new unisex fragrance, later this month.

Tonka 25 is described as a warm woody musk. The notes include orange blossom, Atlas cedar, styrax, vanilla and tonka bean.

Le Labo Tonka 25 will be available in in 10, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum (and probably in other sizes and formats as well).

(via harpersbazaar, hypebae)

Update: the description from Saks Fifth Avenue... "This one is dark. A good, addictive, warm dark, as if the humid summer underwoods, their seeds and resins, were sprinkled with layers of musks and sweetened with drops of vanilla. The perfumer’s notes say orange flower absolute, the unique cedar atlas, styrax resins, absolute tonka and musks. We say Tonka 25."

I’m excited about this one. Curious and eager to get my nose on it.

I am trying to figure out why I’m NOT excited.

I’m not excited because le Labo just always feels exhausting to me. I like many of their scents, but I’m unwilling to make as much a fuss about them as they seem to want people to make. (I’m just a curmudgeon.)

My interest waned with the phrase “warm woody musk” which often translates into “smells like upscale functional product.”

          Yeah, that might be it.

I’m not very excited either. This sounds like another super-radiant musky thing I’ll smell twice a day, like Santal or The Noire. I’ll stick to my Patchouli 24.

Patchouli 24 is fantastic! U hv great taste in perfume. Wearing it out in public is sooo daring, though.

Bc 1) no one needs more tonka (sorry, that’s just me :-) ) and 2) we know for sure that the one thing it won’t smell like is tonka.

          True on both counts!

Color me intrigued. I saw this in the Saks Fall Beauty catalog a few weeks back (with a footnote about availability in October). I don’t understand why they did not launch this while the City Exclusives were out and about!

This could smell nice. Le Labo now has a place in Poland. I can’t go there because it’s in different city but I can buy sample if needed.

Hmm. It seems I always want to like Le Labo offering more than I do. Often, the higher the number attached to the name, the less the thing smells like the note picked up in that name (though I know the name isn’t necessarily determinative, and this appears to be a deliberate choice by the producers, for reasons that escape me), and the more linear the thing seems (again, to me) to be.

That said, some of their offerings strike me as very nicely done, such as Bergamote 22 and Iris 39; the Limette 37 (San Francisco) was a little marvel of sprightly clarity, sadly no longer available. Ylang 49 doesn’t suit me, but I find it really beautiful. Neither of their apparent biggest hits does much for me, though I like Rose 31 much better than Santal 33.

The Le Labo marketing copy specifically says this scent is an exploration on CEDAR – and tonka is the dancing partner for that note I suppose. So I’m not going to be surprised if it doesn’t just smell like tonka. ;)

I am ambivalent about Le Labo – i really like The Noir 29 but also can not deal with the marketing hype. The city exclusives are very derivative for the price as well …but I do like the sound of Tonka so maybe I will get it! If its good
