Wednesday scent of the day 7/11

Posted by Robin on 11 July 2018 291 Comments

Hump Day, Blueberry Muffin Day and Free Slurpee from 7-Eleven day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: still at the lake, and commando again, but I will be wearing lake water later this morning. (And last night I wore a little dab of Guerlain Cologne du 68 to bed.)

Reminder: 7/13 will be Aquatic Friday...wear an aquatic or something meant to evoke the sea.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hi Robin,
the lake in the photo looks beautiful but cold, hope yours is beautiful and warm!
Took a break from trying the 2018 guide scents and tried Chamade instead – it’s almost gone, I may need to go sample again this evening!

Ours is admittedly not quite that beautiful, but yes, warm, and none of those rock hazards to get in the way of your paddleboard šŸ˜‰

Everything is coming up Rose’s today…

Testing my Fo’ah 08 sample that is (sweet) rose based and my friend brought back Rose D’Himalaya from Mariage Freres for me from Paris.

Free slurpees?! I just happen to have a 7-eleven within walking distance of my house so maybe I’ll take my girls and go get a Cap’n Crunch Crunch Berries slurpee! I don’t believe they’ve ever had one! Lol. Especially since today is my half birthday. I had no idea it was, but when I checked my email this morning, my local radio station emailed me wishing me a happy half birthday. Thanks for reminding me I’m now on the downhill slide to another year older.????
SotD is Bois Blonds again. I drained the last of my sample of Carthusia Corallium yesterday and decided it is not for me.

When my children were growing up, we celebrated their “half birthdays” until they were 13. They could invite over a friend for a play date, we ate half a cake (the remainder went into the freezer), and usually did something fun. My son’s half birthday was February 29th so we had to play that by ear. My daughters have carried the tradition on for their children, and I have been surprised that a few of their childhood friends have also initiated it with their children because they thought it was so fun.

        What a fun tradition!
We don’t celebrate half birthdays and until I opened my email this morning, I wasn’t even really aware it was mine.
Our tradition is number of presents for day of the month on the golden birthday. My youngest was born on the 14th of the month and will get 14 presents in 2019. Surpassing both of her older siblings, lol.

PSA 15% off at Ebay with code PRIMOSALE until 11 pm PT…no affiliation. You can use the code at checkout for auction items that happen to end during the time period the code is effective and not just Buy It Now items as I learned a couple weeks ago…just put all the items in your cart. I can’t think of anything I need to buy today but I have over 16 hours left to find something. šŸ˜‰

Been so busy at work at this week and have meetings w/ some outside vendors this morning so I will wear either Venise or Deauville today…light but elegant…like a well made pastry. šŸ™‚

Thanks for the tips! It took me a good while to empty out my cart until I got it winnowed down to just the stuff I wanted to buy. I guess all their codes work like that? I always assumed a one-time use code meant one purchase only.

A bottle of Eau Premiere, and minis of Mugler Cologne and YSL Trench have been purchased.

My DSH samples arrived yesterday, so I’m testing Paper White (narcissus). Very pretty stuff.

Monday afternoon I got my first of the two injections of the new shingles vaccine — I had a truly monster case of chicken pox back in the day and thought it would be wise to avoid shingles if possible — and am now struggling with vaccine aftereffects. I hadn’t expected to get hit this hard with them, but I feel really yucky.

Oh, but that just indicates that the vaccine will really benefit you. I got the vaccine, as I had chicken pox (while I had a cast on my arm-sheer torture) and I am sure it helped me. Both adorable hubby and one of his sisters have had episodes recently, but I have had no sign of it. Good for you for taking good care of yourself.

If you know you had chicken pox as a child, you really should get the vaccine. At best shingles is painful and takes a long time to heal, but if it gets in the optic nerve it can blind you.

Hey Regina, there are two shingles vaccines. The older one is called Zostavax and it is for people age 60+. The newer one is what I received. It’s called Shingrix and is for people 50+. (I just had that birthday this year. :D)

I gather that some insurance policies don’t cover it, but mine was completely covered.

      • mals86 says:

Oh, that’s good to know! The CEO had a mild case of shingles when he was, oh, 38? or so, and that was bad enough, but he says he barely noticed having chicken pox. My BIL had a raging case of shingles at the age of 29 and took several months to recover. I want to AVOID it!

        Happy half birthday back atcha!

I’ve had chills, a headache, and a general feeling of having been hit by a truck. Didn’t even feel like making dinner last night. Also my injection site is pretty painful — that is, I can’t even see where the needle went in and there’s no bruise, but my left arm feels like Mike Tyson’s been at it. But if this is all I get, it’s well worth not getting shingles.

I got the older version of the vaccine (even though I was under 60) so would need to find out if I should also get the newer one. I had a minor case of shingles (before the vaccine)…on my face. But…my sister had a bad bout and two women I know had really awful experiences where the impact went on for over a year and was quite painful.

The vaccine is a very good idea.

Oh, that I don’t know — whether or how soon you can have the Shingrix after Zostavax. I suppose your doctor would advise you. I’ve seen how miserable shingles makes people, and since my chicken pox experience was so bad, I have been really worried about getting shingles.

The chicken pox vaccine was relatively new when my children were small, but you better bet I had them vaccinated as soon as appropriate! Vaccines for the win of humankind!

The CDC is recommending that everyone over 50 get the new shingles shot, even if they got the old one.

Sorry you’re feeling awful, mals! Good for you for getting the vaccine. Thank you for the PSA and the healthy reminder.

I had a mild case of shingles, just enough blisters on one foot to make a diagnosis. It was miserable. When my doctor clears me I will get the new vaccine for sure.

This sounds weird, mals, but lucky you! I say that because the new form of the shingles vaccine is impossible to find around here. Mr. Aparatchick and I are on a waiting list for it. The pharmacist says the manufacturer really underestimated the demand for it.

I warn all my patients that they are probably going to feel crummy for a few days after the Shingrix vaccine and that it will make their arm pretty sore and to get the vaccine when they have time to lay low.

I used up my sample of Reminences Vanille this morning, another one that is not for me. Honestly, for a straight up vanilla fragrance, I still think Laura Mercier gormonde vanille is my favorite. It’s simple, but yummy. Not overly sweet, just a touch of smoke. Sitting here, watching The Big Chill before going to work. I’m thinking about wearing Poison Tendre to choke out my coworkers today ????

    Good morning Y’all!

My office has been staying around 64 degrees, so I’ve been getting away with some heavier scents lately. Today I’m wearing Ysatis, and couldn’t really smell it under my layers of clothes.

Fast forward to now….I just took my group of pharmacy students on a walking tour of our hospital (we have 27 buildings on a huge campus). It is 86 degrees and humid. WOW!!!! Ysatis smells downright AMAZING in the heat!!! I will now consider this a year round fragrance for sure! šŸ™‚

Some ‘lighter’ fragrances really BLOOM in heat and humidity! Some of the Tom Fords are examples of this. People will complain about the scents disappearing but then in summer heat…or lovemaking..the scent comes back!

SOTD is CdG Blue Encens, which is about as close as I get to an aquatic (I was testing it out for Friday’s CP). I’m sure if I pawed through my collection I might find something else, but I’d rather have my ocean scents paired with incense, if possible. šŸ™‚

Continuing my neroli theme from yesterday with Annick Goutal Neroli. Underneath the pretty florals, there’s a very subtle but strange note I notice in this perfume that smells almost like dead flowers or rotting stems. I’ve grown to like it because it suggests the full lifecycle of an orange blossom. It’s like wearing a memento mori.

In other scented news, I bought some reeeally good Virginia Cedar essential oil and it reminds me so much of Tam Dao! I use it in my oil burner in the evenings when I can pretend I’m in a log cabin deep in the woods instead of a creaky old apartment in the city šŸ™‚

HolyNeroli – I am Very curious, i am
testing Cap NĆØroli now and my AG NĆØroli is waiting @ home in a package for me- are you smelling some kind of indolic-ness? I can catch a whiff of it from the real blossoms as they age (even meyer lemon ones).

Hmm, maybe it is some kind of funky indolic thing? I tend to associate indoles with animalic smells (sweat, fur, manure, etc.), but whatever I’m smelling in AG Neroli is distinctly vegetal – to me at least.

    Wednesday!

    1) SOTD: TF Venetian Bergamont. I found a full sample of this in my work drawer yesterday, so am wearing it today since it will be 89F today. Compared to Cap Neroli, this is softer, white muskier and not as orange, but it is still lovely, light and smooth and will bloom with heat when I step outside.

    2) Am doing a 30 day no alcohol challenge with a friend- she feels there is a problem, so I got roped into this for support. This is fine, as July is hot as heck and all I want most days for a relaxing drink is lemonade made with sparkling water (citron presse).

    3) *whispers* I may be starting a new job in September. Stay tuned.

Congrats, elisap! I very occasionally think about getting a near beer but the thought doesn’t stay in my head long enough to follow through. But half of one would probably put me on my ass – a bottle of Kombucha makes me briefly tipsy.

They’re predicting 93 degrees with lots of humidity today where I am, so I went out early and got the oil changed in the car and then made a trip to the farmers’ market (for peas in the pod – love them). I’ve also checked on all of my outdoor plants to be sure they will be OK as it heats up. I’m in HG Moon Bloom, which has become a go-to for me when it’s hot and humid.

I’m in At the Beach 1966 and loving it so much today. Just what I need (thanks, PL67).

Y’all, the TV business is tiring! We didn’t get done until after midnight. We didn’t even start shooting until 6:30 and did 31 takes of the same scene. It was a lot of fun though. It was so interesting to see how it’s all done. A party scene like that is so choreographed. Every movement of every person. It’s like a big dance. And it was also fun to see some celebrities up close, only a couple of feet away, particularly Tony Goldwyn who I watched in Scandal, which was a guilty pleasure lol. He’s just as cute in person…my fiance kept saying (in a joking way), “quit looking over at him!” and I just kept saying, “I can’t help it!!” šŸ˜‰

They’re doing another scene at the party tomorrow and asked me to come back. I think I will just because it’s fun and also you get paid so I mean, might as well.

It’s definitely not something I could do everyday. A lot of waiting around and a lot of repetition! BUT, like I said, I like a good Netflix drama series and this has a promising cast so it’s fun to be a part of it. But you could tell some of the folks there made a living off of being extras (there’s a lot of film work here in ABQ) and I just cannot imagine doing that.

About to shower off this morning’s Amouage Bracken ????. I tested it late last summer and wasn’t taken by it but I thoroughly enjoyed it this a.m. What I recalled as bitter greens bloomed nicely into a green and pink floral. It reminds me a bit of L’Ombre Dans L’eau in that it transitions from green to pink, but the Amouage is easier to wear. I always found the Diptyque beautiful but rather oppressively somber.

    Happy hump day, all!

Months ago I was in Bloomies and a pushy SA was _determined_ to spray me with something. To spite her, I insisted on the Bracken Man instead of the Bracken Woman she wanted to douse me with. I ended up liking the Bracken Man, actually, though it was just a touch out of my comfort range. Sans the SA, I’d like to try the Bracken Woman sometime.

    Nice photo!

Robin, is paddle board yoga offered where you’re at?

    SOTD = Reeking Havoc

    Let me explain:
I have a plastic Q-tip container that is the perfect height for atomizer samples. I have rotated perfumes in and out over the years (since 2013) and with very limited exceptions (currently 2 Jo Malone samples in a mini baggie) all had been sprayed at least once. I have FBs or travel sprays of some of these perfumes. In an effort to continue with The Mission to Use It Up, I applied the following:
    Prada Candy 10
    Puredistance White 2
Gucci Guilty Pour Homme Absolute 1
    Solstice Scents Estate Vanilla 2

I am wafting something really good! Prada Candy is close to being empty while the others will take a while.

Commuting Woes No. 439 (I lost count so this will have to suffice)

Big guy came in at the 1st stop and planted himself catty corner to me, bumping into my foot while doing so and his crotch leaned against the corner of my Longchamps tote. He had to move for me to get off at the next stop, but in doing so, his headset cord got caught around another woman’s bag. I would have been very angry had I missed my stop. Of course as soon as I got to the office, I had to disinfect my bag. I probably should have worn No.19!

Speaking of samples I may not be able to finish, I may need to assemble a ā€œUse it up for meā€ freebie pack. I’ll post that sometime soon, for mailing when the weather eases.

No paddleboard yoga…there is really nothing offered here, it’s just a lake where my sister has a house, there are no public services of any kind whatsoever. We have a small dock and a paddleboard and a couple kayaks, and a small sand beach and a hammock and a firepit. It is very quiet — many of the residents live here full time as opposed to using it for vacation property, so especially during the day it is possible to be the only one out on the lake. More activity in the evenings and weekends when people come home from work and take their boats out.

It is lovely and if someone would just open a cheese shop in driving distance it would be perfection.

Continuing with Orange Sanguine again today, layered with IA St. Julep.

    Layering score: 2 of 5.

Bizarrely, this faded to a skin scent within 10 minutes. It’s like they canceled each other out! But that’s okay, I’ve used up two 1ml samples, one 4ml spray and part of a 7ml dabber, and I’m having fun on The Quest!

Okay, that’s a perfect description of what I experienced. I could tell there was something on my skin, like a faint citrusy odor; a sort of far next day dry down. Just 10 minutes after I applied. Strange phenomenon…I’m sure a ā€˜nose’ could tell us right away what happened in the chemical sense.

I’m wearing LL Musc 25 today from my Cities sampler set. This is perhaps about fourth or so on my list of likes from the set. It’s quite pleasant and refreshing especially for a musk fragrance–light and white, with pretty strong floral aspects, especially lily of the valley. I don’t particularly pick up the aldehydes but maybe that’s why I perceive it as so “light.” Today I aim to make those oatmeal coconut chocolate chip cookies from the recipe the other day. I was going to do it before but it turned out I didn’t have any oatmeal except the instant kind in little packages and didn’t think it would work. It’s rather crazy to turn your oven on in 90+ degree heat, so perhaps I’ll wait until later this evening.

Forgot to say, I’m still rather unsettled by the amazing final episode of Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale from last night. OMG! I am rather glad to have a break from it now for awhile because it’s so stressful to watch it.

I’m planning on 31 Rue Cambon today, it has a lovely classic feel that seems appropriate for a busy day. I’m sure I read somewhere that it uses a seaweed extract to replace oakmoss, so there’s an aquatic connection!

So glad I logged on even though so late in the day or I wouldn’t have known about a free Slurpee day! 7-Eleven is a fairly new thing in NYC but I grew up with it on Long Island and Slurpee’s are the best on hot summer days.

SOTD: vintage Samsara which has lasted 8+ hours and still getting whiffs of it

I started to post at 10 this am and have been sidetracked ever since!

I wore Cire Trudon Bruma today which I sprayed pretty heavily on my scent-glue skin and in my hair, and it was pretty much a barely detectable skin scent after an hour. Such a tease because I think it’s so lovely.

It is, but it’s $190 so maybe just as well. I haven’t worn it that many times-maybe 4-5?-and I have like 4/10ml left.

That one lasted much longer on me than this one. And the 2 share some similarities to me.

Pretty much, since I have scent glue skin. I also get a bit of scent on my clothes, since I usually put perfume on right before I get dressed.

I went with Eau de Merveilles today. Not at all aquatic but sort of a salty orange amber. I’ve used a little more than a third if a one ounce bottle. I guess that I need to reach for it more often.

Salty works in my book for something that reminds people of the ocean. Much better than an overdose of calone!!

That’s what I thought. Although I do have a scent lined up for Friday, I doubt that I’ll enjoy it all that much.

I have to be careful with aquatic scents. L’eau de Issey was horrific on me. But when I can find one that smells like what I think of as a “cold beach” – salty, sandy, minerally, cold water beach, then I usually like it. Today’s version is Tokyo Milk’s Sea and Sky.

am I remembering correctly that you have a bottle of Pacifica’s Malibu Lemon Blossom? If so that would work for the CP based on the description from the website-

“This fresh scent captures the free spirit of the Pacific Ocean with lemon blossom, litsea cubeba, flowering angel’s trumpet, fresh herbs and salty sea breezes.”

If I still had a bottle and I wasn’t on my Melograno kick I would probably have worn it on Friday…..
