Friday scent of the day 7/6

Posted by Robin on 6 July 2018 217 Comments

Hey, it's Friday and it's Frida Kahlo's birthday. Our community project for today: do what you like with the Frida Kahlo theme! (Kevin wrote about a perfume she actually wore in A Celebrity’s Scent: Frida Kahlo & Dana Emir.)

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

For the Frida Kahlo painting Time Flies, which she completed in 1929 (and which you can read more about here), I went with Tauer Perfumes Sotto La Luna Tuberose. I ought to provide some detailed exegesis, but really it was just a gut reaction.

Reminder: 7/13 will be Aquatic Friday...wear an aquatic or something meant to evoke the sea.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Liaisons Dangereuses By Kilian
The link to the CP is a love affair between Kahlo’s husband, Diego Rivera, and her sister Cristina. Both Frida and Diego had extramarital affairs, but apparently the liaison between Diego and Cristina was very painful for Frida.

Portrait of Cristina by Frida – http://www.fridakahlofans.com/c0030n.html
Memory, the Heart (“In this self-portrait, Memory, the Heart 1937, Frida Kahlo expressed her misery and resent over the affair happened two years ago between Diego Rivera and Cristina”) – https://www.fridakahlo.org/memory-the-heart.jsp WARNING: this one is rather graphic and kind of gruesome.

Memory, the Heart is such a terrible sad painting! Especially how she has no hands. While in some ways I admire what seems to have been an exuberant and progressive open relationship… sleeping with her sister just seems awfully cruel of him.

I couldn’t think of anything suitably Kahlo-esque (it would also have to be work-appropriate) so I just wore one of my favourite default scents, Casual Friday by Escada.

Well, I can imagine Frida wearing a warm, dry, leathery scent, or something with gigantic gardenias or tuberose, but what I cannot imagine her wearing is a light fragrance … and I need light today. So I’m wafting lovely layers of Tam Dao over Philosykos.

Not being that familiar with her work I just chose what I felt like and am wearing La haie fleurie du hameau by Jean Claude Elléna. It’s another great summer scent, mostly about jasmin but with a delightful jonquille note thrown in. Discontinued alas.

I was instead on the Finish The Bottle project – goodbye, little bottle of Ivoire! The big backup bottle is now out of the armoire and on the Office perfume tray. There is definitely a sense of accomplishment.

Next up might be the rest of the No. 19, also with a backup in the wings. The only difficulty is that instead of discovering layers of perfumed meaning with the same perfume over various days, I just got rather bored. Will think about it.

Good for you finishing that bottle. Oddly enough I don’t get bored. I rather like wearing the same for days and it makes things easier in the sense that I don’t have to think

You know, I was thinking about that lately and maybe I’ll do a little poll on the weekend – I am never happy with just one thing and always want my music on random shuffle, a new perfume every day, etc. I wonder if people are the same or different in different areas of their lives, with regard to the itch for novelty. I wish I could get deeply into one thing the way you do, cm8! I think it speaks poorly of my attention span.

And I also think that johanob has mentioned turning his perfume collection into a capsule wardrobe hence his selling bottles and draining bottles… I think capsule wardrobe perfume collection would be a great community project!!!! Wear a fragrance that would make the cut for your capsule wardrobe

You have put your finger on it – after I come back from a vacation, where I have been wearing a couple of things, I go crazy and wear lots of other outfits. As much as I like the austere elegance of a capsule wardrobe (in clothing or perfume) it really doesn’t suit me in Real Life.

A drop of Niki de Saint Phalle parfum from a little square bottle with intertwined snakes on top. Saint Phalle and Kahlo both used their art to transcend physical and emotional pain. The counterpoint of bitter artemisia and tagetes and lush jasmine, ylang and rose in the parfum mirrors that. It’s a bit heavy for this murky, hot and humid day, but still beautiful.

I decided to go with Arquiste Boutonniere No.7 today. First because the perfumer, Rodrigo Flores-Roux, is from Mexico, and also because it brought to mind this image of a young Frida Kahlo in a suit:

I had forgotten today’s challenge and realized that it’s still slightly too warm for Shalimar Ode a la Vanille. So I went with the next best thing, Jicky (current edp). I finally dated my vintage 8.5 bottle of Jicky to early 1993. I noticed that even the 1993 bottle is skankier than the current version.

I’m wearing Anima Dulcis today, because it’s from the only line I know of from Mexico (Arquiste), and I love it. Cocoa, chill, cinnamon, vanilla. Very rich and probably too heavy for our weather, but I’ll go easy on it. I’m off to “hip class”–a class at the hospital for people about to have hip surgery–guess I’ll learn more of what they plan to do to me. I hate it when they go through all the risks… ugh… also filling out all that sober paperwork like DNR forms and Power of Attorney forms. I suppose having aches and pains links me to Frida, too!–though my problems are nothing compared to hers.

I was too eager to try my Balmain Ebene today, so I am not really participating. It’s a nice quiet very herbal masculine leather, so many herbs it almost smells like an Italian salad at times, but not in a bad way. I do think Frida would have worn a masculine without giving it a second thought!

Good morning everyone! I have already been out kayaking this morning and am now back home reading NST. I was up early this morning, showered, dressed, and ready for work when I got the call to stay home. It is absolutely beautiful here, so I was disappointed for all of about 5 seconds and then grabbed my Stanley full of coffee and headed out. The heat and humidity broke here overnight and I actually put on jeans and a sweatshirt! It’s lovely!!

Oh, SotD is Bois Blonds again. In spirit I am in NR for her because it is said Salma Hayek wears it, and she played Frida in the movie.

Yes! It’s kind of like a “free” day. This happens a few times a year and I always feel a bit like a kid playing hooky, but hey, on a day like today- I’ll take it!
I guess I should have phrased that better…I meant I was ready for work but then got the call, so went kayaking instead since I was all up and ready. I was out on the water by 7 though! I got back home and my girls were still sleeping and didn’t even know I had been gone. Teenagers????

I love Frida Kahlo’s work, and was recently AT the Casa Azul! I had planned to wear La Chasse aux Papillons, because of the butterfly connection (see here for a concise explanation: http://lustloveleitmotif.com/?p=70) But when I looked for my sample, I couldn’t find it and remembered that I had used it up! ARGH!

So now I’m in ELdO’s Jasmin et Cigarette because that seems like a Frida sort of scent. Unfortunately, I’m still not getting any cigarettes, just a very sweet and ever-so-slightly indolic jasmine.

In my mind I had thought of Habanita as being a Frida scent. But since I don’t have a decant, I went with Lolita Lempicka (original), since it felt soothing today.

Really do need to add Habanita to my next order of decants…

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine

I’m on vacation at The Berkshires…just as hot here as it was when we left NJ yesterday.

I wore No.19 EDP yesterday pre-shower and also post shower. Post shower, it was no match for B&BW Coconut Lime Verbena, the hotel’s toiletries amenities.

So now, I’ll participate in CM8’s Use It Up Already campaign and keep wearing OS until my 4mL travel spray runs dry.

I’m off to spray more and head out for the rest of the day!

This smells much more like the description of Mr Bojnokopff’s Purple hat or maybe Charlatan and not at all like the description of Fatih… It reminds me a little of L’Instant de Guerlain pour Homme.

Fatih Sultan Mehmed is next on my list from Fort and Manle, after buying Suleyman le Magnifique. I bought the discovery set and love fully half of the eight. I can never describe perfumes in words, but Mr Bojnokopff’s Purple Hat was what I call classic aftershave to my nose, ans Charlatan had something very pungent almost sharp.

Years ago, my Paris-born friend and I happened upon a Frida Kahlo art exhibit. My friend had not heard of her and was amazed by the art show. As we were both perfumistas, we were mesmerized by a scent in the gallery and followed a woman until we dared to ask her what she was wearing. Pure patchouli oil! And I thought I didn’t like it! it was fabulous!
I think (as a few others have commented) that Frida would have worn a big white floral like Fracas, Beautiful or Jardins de Bagatelle.

Hello all and once again greetings from the London-Birmingham train, where today’s wine is red and the aircon is positively arctic.

SOTD is hopelessly off theme: Parfumerie Generale “Hyperessence Matale”, a great Summer cologne in our current heatwave. I have an idea I was less positive about it last time I tried it, but context is everything. It doesn’t last all that well, but what cologne does?

So, I was successful at last week’s interview and I started my new contract on Wednesday. Gosh, was I ever wiped at the end of day 1 – I went back to the hotel and fell asleep in my suit right away. Then woke up long enough to get out of the suit, call TOMK and back to sleep again. I was slightly alarmed by a series of loud bangs util I realised that it was the 4th of July in an international finance district

Yesterday I got an invite to a reception in the penthouse of New Zealand House (hi Kanuka!) on the corner of Pall Mall and Haymarket. A NZ company I worked alongside in the Midlands from 2011 to 2015 was rebranding and they very kindly invited me along to the reception. It was lovely to meet people I had worked with and catch up on what they were doing. I took a bunch of pictures as we were on the 17th floor with views all over London – Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, St Paul’s, the London Eye. Amazing! :^)

So today was day 3 in the new job and I think the client is happy, so that’s a burden off my mind. For the weekend I am making a flying visit to Malaga to pick up the keys of the remodelled apartment (the videos are great and I can’t wait to see it in person). I’ll bring a few little bits over with me and go through a snagging list. Then Sunday morning it’s back to the airport and fly home.

I went with Tropic of Capricorn to pair with Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. Sticky overripe mango and dark jungle inspiration.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Portrait_with_Thorn_Necklace_and_Hummingbird

And my Eau de Magnolia travel spray’s spray mechanism is super broken inside the bottle, and I can’t get inside the bottle. Tried a bunch last night but will eventually need to try and remove the top with pliers or break the bottle as carefully as possible to extract perfume. I’ll save this endeavor for another time and will set aside the bottle for the time being.

I wish I had Vol du Nuit for today’s project. I have never smelled it but it has always captured me in some way, the romanticism of adventure that seems to fit Frida…and I see a small aeroplane in Robin’s painting choice. I must buy this perfume one day.
Wearing Smell Bent Artist in the Studio which has a note of plaster .
Strange start to the day. Bizarre warm weather after days of frost (16C) and stormy and my dog has just vomited on my duvet ( and then eaten it up ) it’s not even dawn yet.

Not participating because I’m still in mad sampling mood – but started the day in Ciel d’Opale because of a very rainy forecast (and I truly love that scent), then did a 1 minute sample run at a Douglas Parfumerie where I retried Narciso edp, which gets I think a 5* in the guide, which baffles me – nothing wrong with it, but seems just super similar to lots of other stuff that’s out there. I keep wondering whether I’m trying the right thing. 5 hours after sampling, all the scents have reached the stage of pleasant, but fully unexciting dry down. Happy Friday, everyone!

Imo, Narciso white cube, and the L’absolu are the best of the bunch.

I was looking for my bottle of Piment Brulant, with its notes of peppers and chocolate, but couldn’t locate it. I went with M Micallef Gardenia instead because somehow a big white floral seemed like it would work.

Not participating in the CP since I do not get what fascinates people with Frida Kahlo’s paintings. I must be not seeing something.

Wearing Puredistance Antonia. I had an appointment with my hair stylist today, and I remembered that I planned to bring a spare sample of this perfume for the other stylist in the same salon who colored my hair while my regular master was recovering from the surgery. Her name is Antonia. So since this perfume was on my mind, I decided to wear it. Love it. It’s still my favorite from this brand.

I don’t know: she was busy with a client, so we’ve just exchange a couple of words, and I left her with a sample to try later.

Posting late today, and I’m not sure why. My schedule wasn’t THAT off kilter…????

SOTD = Penhaligon’s Amaranthine, from the sample stash. It smells of tropical flowers, which are a recurring motif in the paintings I have seen of Frida Kahlo’s. I had originally considered a bit of my vintage Femme, but when I sniffed the sample, it was a big NOPE!

I’m so sorry, cazaubon. The grief of losing a pet and the unconditional love they give can be so intense. Sending you a big hug and rest assured that your beloved Dot is surrounded by all of our beloved friends on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

Thank you so much, we had a very close relationship, closer than any other pet I’ve ever had, so it’s extremely hard. She was always there to comfort me and now I don’t have that. But I like to think she is running free and happy at the bridge with our other furry friends. I am trying to focus on all the good years we spent together.

Super late today. I’ve been struggling alot lately, and received news today that just made things a little harder. Sometimes I just get tired. Sorry, I’m kinda a bummer. But, I made a cup of tea, and sat down to read what you guys were up to today, and it makes me feel better. Today I wore Angel Muse, and smelled fabulous, a coworker told me I smelled like bubble gum, what!? I actually said no I don’t, I smell like vetyver and whip cream. Lol. Tonight I put on Cuir Amethyst, because it just felt right.

Sorry about your bad news, Lillyjo. I do think that this (NST) is a place where it’s okay to say things are not always peachy. I guess a lot of us have the scars from all the cr*p that real life brings us. In retrospect it’s character-building but it isn’t fun going through it.

I’m wearing a few sprays of Terracotta now that I’m home from work.

For dinner we tried a home-made savory yogurt bowl. It was your favorite Greek plain yogurt as the base. Then loaded up with chickpeas drizzled with lemon juice, olive oil, seasonings and fresh dill and parsley. We added chopped onions for flavor and chopped celery for crunch factor, topped with roasted sunflower seeds and almonds. My hubby brought out another yogurt from the spare fridge; this one turned out to be a vanilla flavored one. Yet, somehow it was MY fault (in a joking manner!). Next time we should have it down pat.

This sounds good and healthy! Did you use raw chopped onions? For a little bit of sweet & sour, I suggest adding some dried cranberries.

Yes, we used a red onion, finely chopped. I forgot to add that we used a cucumber too. I think this will be added to our repertoire for lunches or a light, healthy dinner.

Good call on the cranberries! A nice touch. That’s the beauty of these recipes, you can add whatever you like. We regularly make a quinoa salad for lunch which has been modified numerous times.
