Monday scent of the day 6/18

Posted by Robin on 18 June 2018 287 Comments

Argh, it's Monday again. It's also International Picnic Day, International Sushi Day, Autistic Pride Day and Paul McCartney's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Etat Libre d’Orange You or Someone Like You.

Reminder: on 6/22 we're doing the Picture challenge, edition 3. Wear a perfume that matches the picture, which is David Hockney's Beverly Hills Housewife, from 1966. You can read more about the painting here and here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

when the kids nap I will be watching more world cup. This is the only time I watch sports on TV. Normally we don’t have TV, I make Mr. L buy a subscription just for this!

So I’m a huge sports fan but have never really gotten into soccer because I’m a typical American BUT I’ve been watching several of the matches this weekend and told my sister, “the fact that some of these players are super hot make this an easy sport to watch!” ;)

KellyC, not sure what you type is but you should check out the goalie for the Swiss Team.

Which team is “yours”? (I hope that’s not a political question). My neighbours are all flying their countries-of-origin flags right now, and it makes me wish I had something more than 6 generations of Canadians in my pedigree.

I love Canadians, I am married to one.
Normally I would cheer for Italy, but since they are out I will cheer for Spain ????????
        What about you?

My husband is Japanese, so I go with them for a while, one of my sons-in-law is Dutch, so sometimes I wear orange, another son-in-law is Indo-Canadian (can’t do that this year, I guess) and I lived in Trinidad for a while (ditto). We went to Iceland on vacation this year and I kind of like their story so if/when Japan goes down they might be the one.

NV Pichola today- sadly just used up the last of my decant.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Mine was crazy: my youngest graduated high school, we hosted a large graduation party, also attended a Father’s Day party, then last night had a migraine (my first and hopefully last).

I was also contemplating a PPC sample order as I wore from my decant of Vientiane on Friday night. I LOVE Vientiane! I do like Branch & Vine but wish it lasted longer. I suppose it is a cologne though in its defense. I already have and love many of theirs, but on my to-sample list are Love-in-a-Mist, Heart of Darkness, Divine, Tabac Citron, and Tangerine Thyme. Oh, and the oils! I’m really interested in Sweet Jasmine Brown after your description.

Lovestosmellgood, I really like their Hindu Honeysuckle and have a travel spray. How do you like it?

Sweet Jasmine Brown is interesting to me in that it smells funky and earthy with my nose to my skin, but the sillage is more of a sweet/pretty jasmine, and I love the contrast. Very curious to hear if others have the same experience!

I have been to PP several times. My favorite of her range is Rose Boheme (tea, oud, patch, rose) but I also really like Love In A Mist (a peppery hay/meadow floral) and own both. I used to have Cocoa Tuberose which is a great winter scent. I sampled all the scents mentioned except Heart of Darkness. I hope you had fun Regina. PP is a pretty little shop and fun to visit.

Coolish & rainy so I felt okay with wearing the warm snuggly amber of Bois 1920 Sutra Ylang. It’s very nice but I am once again reminded that I no longer live for ambers as I once did. I can take them or leave them now.

The other day I wore a sample of extremely vintage Anne Klein II, the first amber I ever fell in love with alllll the way back in 1985, and had the same reaction. I’ve changed.

Finally, a cool rainy day after a suffocatingly hot weekend.

Wearing Hermessence Cedre Sambac. It seemed bold and brazen on paper, but is much more cuddly on the skin. Warm woodsy abstract jasmine. I like it a lot.

I can’t thank enough the Chicago Hermes SA who very generously gave two 4ml sample vials each of the three new scents. I won’t feel the need to acquire a travel set for quite some time ;-)

Inadvertently on theme in Chanel 19 edc. Today is moving day. Everything goes on a truck headed for Cleveland, with my H at the wheel. Things have gone quite smoothly all things considered, but gosh, moving is unbelievably laborious. Fortunately my H has a particular talent for it (and has worked as a mover in the past.) He’s also very kind and doesn’t expect me to do any heavy lifting.

Everything we have is in our storage unit, boxed up and ready to go, so this last bit should be fairly easy going. And No 19 smells perfect.

Love today’s photo Robin. That green!!

I fit pretty well with CP today in Jour d’Hermes Absolu…grapefruit. (Although I admit, despite being a CA girl, I prefer FL grapefruit)

I would love to see that Hockney in person. It’s HUGE!

Gonna be a warm one. I spent yesterday in the bedroom resting a pulled hamstring, thanks to stupid cats in small places deciding to dart between my legs. I turned my AC off because my husband was running it at freezing temp in the living room. It’s a battle all summer….

My husband wants the house at 78F or higher in the summer, but I find that stifling unless the windows are open. I’d love it to be 73, but we compromised at 75. Any hotter than that and I’m dyyyyyyying. Perimenopause is NO JOKE.

78 or higher is not good for perfume storage!

But we are opposites, my husband would prefer 69 or 70 and I hate having to wear sweaters inside in the summer.

Thanks. I’m just being conservative yesterday and today. It’s made me aware that I need more exercise and definitely more stretching. I’ve let my hamstrings tighten up. These are big muscles…when you strain them at all, they’re slower to heal than some others.

CM8 – are you out there? When I mentioned the things I had learned from cleaning out my mother’s house, you said you would talk to your parents about it, but didn’t think talking would help. I wondered if this book might make them think, since it is written from an older person’s point of view: it’s called “The Gentle are of Swedish Death Cleaning; How to Free yourself and your family from a lifetime of clutter” by Margarita Magnusson. It’s a quick read and not fine literature, but it might open up a conversation.
I’m going to wear Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca once I shower and dress.

Thank you for the book information, I will try to find this. My in-laws moved from a 3 bedroom house with a full basement into a semi retirement condo. They got rid of quite a bit before the move, but still somehow giant pieces of furniture (a hutch and a patio set with 4 giant chairs) along with tons of household stuff arrived. Their storage closet is jammed. When I went to use the shower, the tub/shower in spare bathroom was FULL of boxes.

I’m in FM Vetiver Extraordinaire, from an eBay sample. I wore it yesterday too, but only a tiny spritz. This morning, I was a little braver with five sprays, which is definitely the way to go.

    Hi All! Late to this.

    1) SOTD: Florida Water. We are having a spate of relatively rare hot, humid weather. This past weekend it got VERY hot, thunderous- and then DOWNPOURS! Florida Water really does have a cooling and refreshing effect when it is sticky and humid!

    2) Pride parade in Portland was VERY fun; I have never seen so many bare bottoms in chaps EVER, i have to say.

    3) Binge alert: Versailles Season 2 on Netflix. NOT FOR KIDS, yo. The guy who plays Prince Phillipe has grown up to be a hottie (he was Mordred on Merlian) Princess Sophie is spunky and bright, and Athenais is by turns pitiable and contemptible. Great fun for costume porn; some of set furnishings are off (the armchairs, it’s make me cry precious!) But all in all, great fun!

I’m doing some sample testing this morning, with a set I just ordered from Kyse Perfumes. I already have bottles of Oui Plus, Vertigo Cuir and Vanille Debauche from a few years back, which I just rediscovered in my annual “let’s move/rearrange/rehouse all of the perfume cabinet contents to see if I can come up with a better way to store and access everything” event. Sprayed some Oui Plus, remembered just how much it makes me want to eat my arm, layered it with some other stuff to balance the sweetness, and then went off to sample some more scents from this line. This morning I’m wearing Elegance Sombre, which has started off as a lovely chocolate dipped orange peel. Gourmands only need apply.

Happy Monday, everybody, if that’s a possibility.

Nice! It’s comforting that they sometimes bring scents back. I am crossing my fingers, though not counting on it, that Vikt one day gets a revival. I think it’s genius but just can’t pay discontinued resale prices for it.

Yes, hot today. I’m wearing Carthusia Mediterraneo. The atomizer gives a big spray of very fine droplets, so I only needed two spritzes. I’m trying to get a jump on jet lag for my upcoming trip, so I went to bed last night at 9:30, up today at 5, and I’ll keep setting myself back until I leave. It’s 5:30 pm in London now but just past breakfast here. Shall I have some dinner in a little while, or a sandwich? More coffee is certain.

Robin, I have You or Someone Like You on deck for later this week as a pairing with the Hockney.

But today I was inspired by my new Kneipp Passionfruit & Grapefruit Body Wash, so I’m wearing Arielle Shoshana. I only wish the delightful passionfruit note lasted longer. I’ve already reapplied in the bathroom at work. I feel like the Beverly Hills Housewife might approve of this one.

SotD = PHI une rose de kandahar

    SO GOOD.

We are not worthy, but I thank the universe that Andy Tauer walks the earth creating perfect fragrant art with a wink, a nod, and absolute integrity.

Nyquil-me has good taste. When I had flu a few weeks ago I procured samples of PHI, Sotto la Luna Tuberose, and Les Annees 25. Each one is beautiful. Mind blown.

Speaking of mind blown, I’m so glad it’s Autistic Pride Day. I should have known about this one. In my family we say “the Force runs strong” as we watch neurologically atypical behaviors wax and wane through the generations and the lives of individuals. I can really relate to Frankie Heck, the mom from the tv show The Middle. We have a few Bricks in our family, both young and old.

To celebrate all manner of diversity, I’m wearing my blue t-shirt that says “Different is Be-YOU-tiful.” Have a fabulous day, everyone, and let your fragrant freak flag fly in whatever colors and scents you choose! :D

SOTD = Chanel 28 La Pausa EDT

Matching the cool elegance of the woman.

With the weather having turned scorchingly hot comes the dilemma of what to wear on the commute in. Usually, the trains are freezing cold but the walk from public transportation to the office is HOT. UNIQLO to the rescue with these really thin one layer hoodies. The fabric is breathable and light and keeps the temporary chill out. The only thing that can make this better is if was waterproof without sacrificing the pliability of the fabric.

In other news, I am starting 2 more occasional segments:
    – Egregious Experiences for non-commuting-related things that annoyed me
    – Life-changing Experiences for amazing things that happened, including a shout out of products I’ve found particularly remarkable.

Hopefully I’ll have more life-changing things to talk about than egregious behaviors!

Last time I was in NYC it was summer and I couldn’t fathom how people dealt with that. Are people just sick all summer what with the continual temperature extremes? The nast dripping from the ceiling certainly can’t help.

Conversely, I spent a summer in college commuting on a hot, sweaty bus back and forth to an ice cold office, schlepping a huge wool turtleneck each way. I didn’t get sick but I had many itchy rides.

I think most are used to the extremes. I keep a black wool high-low drapey cardigan at work which matches everything!

One of the ickiest with what to wear is many end up wearing short sleeves or sleeveless and I CANNOT STAND.touching a stranger’s SKIN. Yuck!

First I’ve got to say that I went right to the Neiman Marcus website to look at those candles–I love that kind of iridescent pottery. It reminds me of Japanese lustre wear, which I happen to collect. I was all ready to buy one when I noticed all the other colors they have (the one for white woods and mint looks especially beautiful), and I couldn’t make up my mind.
I am trying out Arquiste The Architects Club this morning, from the very fun package hajusuuri so generously sent me. This is an interesting and non-sweet vanilla, which goes on with strong juniper berry and citrus (bitter orange) notes. I’ve had it on for over an hour now and those aren’t there any more. I prefer the very lush and sweeter Anima Dulcis, I think. Neither one is suitable for the Hockney painting, but I have some ideas about that for this Friday.

I grabbed a carded sample of Mon Guerlain to put on after the pool* without checking the notes, but three minutes after application I got a massive headache.

A massive LAVENDER headache. CUSS IT. (I should always check the notes list for Dreaded Lavender.) I already washed it off, and went for Charnel Elixir Floral Romantique, which I love and am slightly embarrassed about loving, but not enough to not wear it.

    * After three years of suffering from plantar fasciitis which was being ignored by my doctor, I finally put my foot down (ha) and insisted that the practice allow me to see another doctor in the same office. New one was all, “Yeah, you need to take massive Advil for the next 3-4 weeks, and either get some sandals from [brand] or never take your athletic shoes off. And do these exercises [hands me printed info with pictures]. And ignore your Fitbit. Swim, or do stationary bike, or water aerobics. Do NOT walk 10,000 steps a day.) So I’m doing water aerobics with all the fab old ladies at the Y, for the next couple of weeks. They are a trip. I love them.

Chacos. They are heavy (ish) and they have a fairly rigid high arch, but MAN do they feel good to me. I have high arches anyway — I recently found out that people with either high or flat arches are more prone to PF. Also, they’re kinda ugly.

I also bought some Tevas (also ugly IMO), but they are cushier/less supportive, so they’re getting used in the pool to keep ma feets from the hard pool bottom as per New Doctor.

I had tried Vionics, but apparently I need ankle support and the pair of Vionics I bought a few years ago are slides. I cannot wear them without pain now, and should probably get rid of them.

It smells like a warm cedar deck, and I am all over it. I didn’t choose it to match the painting, but I think it fits.

This AM I drained the last of my Scent Bird decant of Velvet Lavender (Eric Buterbaugh) — sorry Mals for your lavender allergy!– which I thought I was totally meh about, but it might be the first Scent Bird I have ever finished –I’ve given all of the others away.

In random other news, finally got my grey hair taken care of today. Last time I “cheated” on my regular hair colorist in the interest of time (she doesn’t cut hair and I was getting a hair cut). I knew I’d be in for a lashing, but it was worse than I expected. Turns out the hair cutting guy was indeed the devil incarnate who damaged, ruined, and fried my hair, and worst of all, she said, was that he’d turned my hair khaki green! (Who knew?) Why did I subject myself to this lecture? Too darn lazy to figure out a plan B ;-) And she does do a lovely job –Oakland Fresca AKA formerly of green hair fame and damn proud of it

Speaking of pride, thinking of Autism Pride Day, my younger son (who has many challenges) works with folks at the Center for Independent Living to improve some of his pedestrian skills. ANYWAY, their slogan is “Be Your Own Normal, Whatever That Means.” :-) :-) :-)

I figured it’d all be good after chopping it all of, save an inch or so, a couple of weeks ago. But no! It needed evening out so I re-colored and effed it up again. Fortunately I had already done some research on stripping fresh color out, and was able to *mostly* fix it. Since then it has faded into exactly the color I wanted – phew!

I actually thought my hair looked okay. Not great, but okay. And definitely not verde! (My grey roots on the other hand were getting scary.) But she was having a hard time forgiving me. The cuckolded colorist!

But I have had my own hair disasters. Ooohhh thick bands of highlights that started mid-length, and cutting bangs unevenly, and just general ‘oh noooooooo’s!

“The case of the cuckolded colorist” would be a great Perry Mason title!

Was it an ash shade? The base is actually green(which counteracts red tones) so that’s not crazy.

I’ve decided to embrace my own normal and let the gray grow in…. some days I like the gray, other days I think my hair just looks dusty. I’m just too cheap to do what I’d really like…go blonde (like I was when I was 10.)

I have several friends who are rocking their grey (gray? I’m a terrible speller) and I bet you look terrific.

And congrats on vanquishing all the hair demons.

I’m in some of the same icky sticky weather as quite a few other NSTers. I bailed on walking to the grocery store today… too darn hot. Nothing on that list is “have to have immediately”… it can wait until tomorrow.

SOTD = Byredo Flowerhead, from a lovely and generous NSTer. It hung out with me while I washed the last load of backlogged laundry today. w00t w00t! (Insert happy dance!)

      Yay for conquering the laundry!

The only place I’m heading in this icky weather tonight is to the pool, where I’ll join the other old ladies in water aerobics. :)

Late to the party today, but I wore Monserrat for a very warm back-to-work Monday which started very early for our monthly team meeting with its 2 hour commute to my facility. Halfway there, the meeting got canceled, which was fine by me, but wish I could’ve slept longer.

Mostly what makes me sleep less is knowing I have to wake up at 5. Blurgh.

I know zilch about commuting in NYC but I’m surprised that they don’t do a video conference or find some other alternative. Seems like a lot of wasted time.
Hope you can sleep a little later tomorrow.

Only a couple of us commute on public transport and live far. Another colleague’s commute is over 2 hours! Yeah, we were talking about that earlier, doing video conference. But they are so tech backwards where I work.
It’s mostly a waste of time because we don’t actually do much in our meetings-primarily complaining and gossip (and cake for whoever’s birthday is that month).

I wore Yosh’s Ginger Ciao today, which is really too big for the office, but at least no one complained (to my face, anyway).

I have it in the oil, and it seems to me to stick close to me as a skin scent. I don’t know if you’ve tried that or not. Nobody smells it unless they come up really close or hug me and then I get nice compliments.

I had one of those days at work when everything went wrong. So glad it’s over. Luckily, I wore Arielle Shoshana today which is very cheerful.

Happy Monday Everyone! This is the first official day of my summer vacation. As educators, it seems like our summers get shorter and shorter every year. I think that we counselors get a total of 4 weeks off this summer. We head back the week of July 17th. But, I guess I should be grateful of the time I have.
As I do every summer, I try to go through my samples. So today, my SOTD (which has nothing to do with the picture) is Lime, Gardenia & Benzoin by Dame Perfumery. This is a beautiful fragrance and is totally appropriate for the season, but doesn’t last very long on me. If the longevity were better, this would totally be FB worthy.
    Enjoy the week, everyone!
