Monday scent of the day 5/21

Posted by Robin on 21 May 2018 269 Comments

Monday, somewhat mitigated by National Strawberries and Cream Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Ormonde Jayne Isfarkand, which was originally called Isfahan, for the city in Iran.

Reminder: on 5/25 we're doing Oh the Places You’ll Go...wear a perfume with a place name. Suggested by Elisa.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try (but frequently won't succeed! I'm way behind at the moment!) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance .

Good that it’s National Strawberries and Cream Day because I just ate a strawberry smoothie which was delicious!

Now, on to the SOTD, it’s Atelier Cologne Blanche Immortelle; I just finished my sample and won’t be needing a bottle.

Alas, balsamic vinegar is something I have yet to learn to enjoy (if it is possible at all for me).
My favorite pairing with fresh strawberries is sparkling wine (typically semi-sweet or off-dry white Lambrusco).

SotD is LADDM for the CP and because it is 50 and rainy here today.????
I spent a couple hours yesterday swapping out my closet, packing sweaters away and making piles for goodwill and the resale shop. I have been perusing blogs about capsule wardrobes and I’m gonna give it a try. I have a ridiculous amount of clothes that I never wear, and living in a house that was built in the 1930’s does not allow for a lot of closet space. I find myself reaching for the same comfy T-shirts, skinny jeans and Birkenstocks day after day. Having a job where I don’t have to think about what I’m going to wear (scrubs!) is definitely a bonus here.
I’m off to the resale shop, smelling good!

I cleaned out two closets and my cedar chest last week, but I’m starting to believe that I wasn’t ruthless enough. I need to be MORE RUTHLESS… or wind up like my mother, still dithering about whether she should pack up all my grandmother’s collectible ceramic bird figurines (“But they’re COLLECTIBLE!! They’re worth MONEY!” Uh, no, Mom. No, they’re not. We’ve had this conversation a dozen times.) and her furniture and books and shell collection (“Mother would just hate it if I got rid of all her treasures.” Me: [headdesk.] You know she’s been dead ten years, Mom. All her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nephews and extant family members have been offered the opportunity to take what they wanted.)
Pack-rat tendencies run strong in my family. I’m trying to head them off, but so far I’m only making marginal progress.

I’m afraid I resemble your mother. In my case, I know that the things I’ve inherited from my parents aren’t worth much, but I still can’t bear to part with them. Not yet at least. My mother died almost 5 years ago, and it was my job to go through everything in the estate. A lot was given away, but I’ve still kept too much. It’s hard because I have an attic and a basement, and thus an excuse for stashing stuff.

It is hard to get rid of everything.

My grandmother lived with my parents for close to 40 years, in a separate “apartment” in the walk-out basement; she had her own living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom. When I was growing up, all her rooms were jammed with furniture and plants and tchotchkes, so that kind of over-furnishing still seems normal to me. Every close family member has been given at least one piece of furniture as well as other keepsakes, so all the desirable things are gone.

So, of course, all the remaining stuff is located in “her space,” and nothing is pushing my mother to clear it out. She complains about it frequently, but every time I offer to help she winds up putting 3/4 of what we just went through back and setting the rest aside to “give to friends,” (it’s still there in bags the next time I visit). so I’ve started insisting that whatever we touch MUST leave the house… and Mom has stopped asking for help. Yikes.

Mom is 78. What are the odds that when she leaves this earth in 20 years, Grandmother’s stuff is still in the basement?

This is where earthquakes come in handy. All my mother’s ceramics, antique jelly molds, staffordshire, crockery , scandinavian glassware, was broken in the Christchurch earthquake. Now there a couple of precious fragments still around but that’s all. Her collection was fantastic…so there is a downside.

I’m with you, mals. My mother is also 78 and her whole house (and storage unit) is stacked to the ceiling. Wish that were an exaggeration but it’s not. My husband votes for torching the place when it inevitably falls to us to clean it out.

          • Deva says:
            22 May 2018 at 7:31 am

Do you think maybe it’s because older generations did without a lot of “things” that younger generations take for granted? It seems that for people who did without get a huge part of their identity from their “things” which may be physical manifestations of their emotional selves? Maybe just avoid the friction all together and spend time with your mom doing things you enjoy. After she passes I think you might regret the squabbles over the “things.”

Sigh, I know the feeling – my in-laws recently moved from their home of 30 years to a smaller apartment. We’ve been given the chance to take what we want SEVERAL times, but still every time we see them they have found one or two more items they just know we want. At this point we just say thank you and decide on our own whether to keep or discard the thing. They’re past the point where they need to sell their house, but seem determined to individually rehome every item rather than just donating it all in bulk. I know that there is a huge emotional component to it, and in some ways they are not ready to move on, but it’s still frustrating to see the burden of *things*.

When my dad died, we thought we would need an extra casket for his stuff!!
I say that with all love, that was Dad.
Mom did make it easier for my sister and me. And i am so glad i spent last summer downsizing and cleaning out and getting all my papers in order.
Today’s scent will be a bit of JM incense and cedrat.
When we lived in Iran, any chance to go to Isphahan was wonderful. I can smell the barbarie bread baking early in the shops and the scent of persian roses and fruits piled up on the street shops.

I moved out of the farmhouse in April 2017,with a suitcase of clothes and essentials.
Perfume went to a friend for storage at her place, ample room for my collection, everything else went into 4 storage units untill June.
I emptied and sorted 2 units so far,the rest still awaits me.Lots of sentimental stuff, and great antique furniture,so it’s a process and a half!
I eventually brought all the perfumes to my place, but this weekend again I realized it is ALL TOO MUCH.

Well done, being ruthless is hard sometimes. We moved into a very old, small house with literally two closets (his & hers) ten years ago and it’s good – nothing can come in without something going out. Fortunately, my perfumes and jewelry collections don’t take up much space. My mother is almost 91 and her house is crammed full of stuff; my father died last year and she hasn’t let me change one thing in his bedroom, it will probably all be there for me to deal with when she’s gone. My only sibling has a big house and she’s a huge pack rat with sentimental feelings about everything. I try not to think about how hard it will be to get rid of everything ????

Well, I started with Be Less With More which was referenced in the documentary The Minimalists. She has some very good ideas on where and how to start. I am not a very create person though, so I like the blogs Un-fancy, Theblissfulmind, and Truncation because they have suggestions and even links on what to wear and how to put it together.
5 is a good start! I boxed up over 30 items- I feel lighter, lol.

These are the ones I ended up getting since the store had them in stock. They are a bit more pink than the photo would have you believe, and in sunshine had a subtle metallic glow.

Good for you! I really need to do that. My apt building was built about 6 or 7 years ago with NO closets!! Not sure what he was thinking. So true about reaching for the same few items. The comfortable ones. I have a tendency to want some funky statement piece, and then buy it and never wear it. Somehow, I just don’t learn.

No closets?! That’s weird, seems like new construction always has more/ larger closets.

For breakfast I had strawberries (and blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries) with yogurt instead of cream, which sort of counts?

I’m wearing ELdO Rossy de Palma because I’m completely into intense roses right now: I wear that, Rose Anonyme, or Rose Jam almost every day (and I should dig out my samples of La Fille de Berlin and Sa Majesté la Rose too). I’ll get tired of them eventually, I’m sure. But not now.

I wanted the chocolate and tobacco notes it was supposed to have. I smelled them in the sample, but as soon as I applied it to skin – incense! So although it is fine as an incense fragrance, I am disappointed not to get the notes I was expecting.

Hi all! I unknowingly presaged the daily theme, and fixed a strawberry tart with basil pastry cream over the weekend (as a bring-to dessert for dinner at a friend’s). I bought a new pastry book (Modern French Pastry – I was seduced by the photos), and this was one of the easier-looking recipes. It was good. Even better, though, was the home-made pizza my friend made, from Nancy Silverton’s dough recipe. The four of us ate five pizzas at dinner. Granted, they were small pizzas, but still. Delicious!

No scent yet. I’m contemplating going to the gym, so I might wait until after I get home and shower.

My fridge is usually quite boring, as well – lots of beans, brown rice, salmon, and veg – which is likely why I went overboard with the pizza and dessert. There’s something about really good pizza – with a crispy yet chewy crust, and a few really delicious toppings, that makes every bite seem heavenly.

That probably didn’t help with the hunger. :-)

Agree, but White Patchouli is pretty far removed from earthy, “hippie” patchouli. It’s the most abstract patchouli I’ve ever come across. On skin, its florals, ambrette, & coriander sing over the patchouli. One spray, 2 max under clothes, creates a very subtle, beautiful scent bubble that stays close-to-the-skin.

I hadn’t been there in ages either.
The parsley fades after a while, but it kind of took over all the other notes for a while. I totally wasn’t expecting that. Doesn’t smell bad, but not sure I want to smell like that. There are other green herbs I’d have preferred.

I agree with the Parsley note, but also wanted to add in: I love, love, love Cap Neroli. I’ve come to recognize the parsley as the mediterranean herbal notes she’s trying to evoke, rather than a bouquet Garni :). And the dry down is totally different, a pleasant background musk. For me, this is a great everyday fresh getting stuff done scent, which moderate longevity. In fact, I want to put it on most mornings….Having said that, non perfumista friends have scratched their heads at this one and commented that it didn’t smell “perfumey”.

I’m having trouble finding perfumes with a place name, but maybe I need more time to think about it (and more coffee). Right now I’m enjoying some Carthusian Mediterraneo EDT from a tiny splash bottle. Very lemony and pleasant with an herby undertone. It’s kind of a place, right? A place I’d love to be right now! We’ve been having record heat and already summer levels of humidity and now is the second gray rainy day with some thunder. Dreary and depressing for a suitable Monday morning blah mood. My brother and I are trying to put together plans for our mother because it’s come time for her to be in assisted living, but where? We do have some options but the whole prospect is daunting and she’s increasingly depressed about it, which makes us sad.

I looked through my perfume and could only find one place name (though I didn’t go through all my samples) – Bulgari Omnia Paraiba. The weather is just not right for it today (chilly, cloudy, damp), so I went with smell bent One.

I did have some strawberries (and raspberries) and yogurt for breakfast this morning, so almost on theme there!

I didn’t know that was a place so I had to look it up. Very interesting! The only thing I’ve heard of before are the Paraiba tourmalines, which are gorgeous.

The community project is educational! I also didn’t know that when I bought it – I think I looked it up a few weeks ago after putting it on to see if it fit the community project (can’t recall which one)! I also learned something as I didn’t know about those tourmalines – they are beautiful!

My strawberry plants seem to have recovered after the dog decided to nap in the middle of their raised bed. He has the entire back yard to sleep in but chose the one place it was hardest to get into. It has net over it now and there are some blossoms and tiny green berries. Today I’m wearing Pulp–no strawberry, but delicious nonetheless.

Inadvertently on theme for this Friday, as I am in Chinatown, both the body creme and the perfume. Since it’s a holiday weekend I have been working on the samples, and have finished off OdlR’s Live in Love and a nice but not memorable rose from somebody or other.

    Commuting Woes No. 432

    – Guy walked in to the train car and stood next to me. He started sneezing, but at least he sneezed into his sleeve. He could have been allergic to my perfume (but I don’t necessarily care). He started to fan himself with….a thick 3 inch paperback book! Really? That is no better than using a credit card to fan oneself!

He’s been out of school technically since December (he received early graduation and is already taking classes at the community college) but they only have one commencement service in May. Seeing him in that cap and gown makes it real. ???? Also, am of his friends since elementary school…I’m going to be a mess! Bought new waterproof mascara just for the occasion ha!

We had a light dusting of snow on the hills yesterday and a freezing wind…you know it’w winter when your thighs feel cold through your trousers. I’ve been playing with mitsouko, using it to add character to some of my lighter scents…like La pluie. Such fun. Almost dies when I layered it with Loulou…created a perfume that would suit the crew working jackhammers and steamrollers on the endless roadworks in our street (2 months now). Coco+Mitsouko= Coco Madame Intense…now that’s what I call a party!

Very happy to see bright blue skies and that big shiny thing up in the sky today!! I was beginning to get a little down in the dumps from all the rain in my area.

I had visited a friend yesterday to see the 10-week old kittens she is currently fostering, with the intent to adopt. Very sweet temperaments, and rather outgoing for being as young as they are. Adorable little balls of fluff! So floofy!

SOTD = Essence Labdanum by Donna Karan, from the sample stash. I am really liking this… kind of a lightweight oriental for warmer weather.

Sweet little bits of floof KITTENS, no less! One of them is a little grey cloud, while her sister is a black fluff. They look like they are gonna be longhaired cats when the adult coats come in.

I have a grey cloud cat. I had no idea she was going to be a super-floof when I adopted her. She was an older rescue, with sleek, soft short hair and a slight ruff of white. They neglected to tell me that they had had to shave her down to skin when they brought her in…within three months, during the winter, she turned into a dandelion.

One spray of Insolence this morning because I didn’t want to offend anyone during our staff meeting. Disappeared after spending a couple of hours cleaning my classroom. Got home to find my sample of Tauer Les Annees 25 with the new Tauer Mag, so had to put that on right away. I’m not good at describing scent but it’s unquestionably a Tauer. It also reminds me of something but I can’t put my finger on it. So far I’m finding it interesting but not something I think I would reach for.

Sampling Sylvaine Delacourte’s scents today. Lotsa white musk here :) I do like Smeraldo though. But I don’t need 100ml of it. Would anyone be interested in splitting one of her sets of 7.5ml sprays? A set of 4 is $75 so each one would be about $20 depending on shipping costs. If you’re interested, ping me at emc dawt 7 1 1 7 in the land of gee-mayle.

Monday! Relaxing! Yesterday was my husband’s volunteer fire department’s annual pancake breakfast. My kitchen helper flaked on me so I was on my own in the kitchen! Mixed up batter (from scratch of course) and juice for 160 :) Husband owes me :) :)

I love making pancakes and eating them too, but for 160? Wowza! You win at pancakes.

I’m doing a Mitsy Monday here.

It’s a rather nice day for a Monday. The high will be below 100°, there’s no gusty wind, and the humidity right now is a very desert-y 3%. Yeah, you read that right: 3%. ????

Only 4 more days until ‘Solo’. Yaaay!

Wow, we had 100% humidity yeasterday and 83% today, which is relatively comfortable.

Mitsy? Mitsouko or Mitzah? Either way, you smelled great!

        Mitsouuuuuko! ????

(See what we mean when we say, “It’s a dry heat”?????) I’m OK with high humidity in cool or cold weather, but if it’s hot… I can’t do it. I can’t.

I wore Cristalle for the first time today since last summer. I had a long and difficult day at work and it was a perfect companion.

Osmanthe Yunnan to to fly across the Atlantic (to give myself a lovely scent bubble in all that staleness without annoying people around me). And then arriving to a parcel of vintage Fracas (thanks, Mals!)

In Washington DC for, um, 46 hours total. Which is absurd. I am fighting to get a little time free on Wednesday morning to go and see the Sally Mann exhibition at the National Gallery.
