Monday scent of the day 5/14

Posted by Robin on 14 May 2018 188 Comments

Monday all over again! It's also Thomas Gainsborough's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Frédéric Malle Music for a While, which Kevin will review on Wednesday.

Reminder: on 5/18 we're celebrating Museum Day. Wear a fragrance to match your favorite painting (or other object, anything you like!) in a museum, and if you can, post a link to an image.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is CDG Avignon. The painting I chose is Portrait of Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/Retrato_del_Papa_Inocencio_X._Roma%2C_by_Diego_Vel%C3%A1zquez.jpg

Beyond Love for the Modigliani I posted about last week…

For a non perfume question, I am looking for a face wash for my combination/sensitive skin if anyone can recommend anything. I have used Purpose for many years but I think I want to have an alternative.

Paula’s Choice makes a range of face cleansers, and has a sensitive skin line that’s very good. I use the skin recovery cleanser and like it a lot.

I second Paula’s Choice cleansers. They clean well, do not dry or irritate skin. Just make sure to get the one that fits your skin type or is marked for all types.

I’m pretty devoted to Cerave, I like both the creamy and foaming versions. When I feel lazy I use the foaming one, when feeling more ambitious (or wearing more makeup and sunscreen) I start with an oil cleanser and then use the non-foaming version for a second cleanse.

      I like this gentle cleanser – https://www.madhippie.com/products/cream-cleanser
It’s more expensive than yours though. Also, I’d say that it will work better if you have a combination skin prone to dryness.

I recently used up a large bottle of La Roche-Posay Toleraine Purifying Foaming Cleanser for normal to oily skin. I really liked it, and it didn’t irritate my sensitive skin. I didn’t realize there were two versions when I bought it so next time I’ll go for the Hydrating Gentle Cleanser for normal to dry skin. That will suit my skin type better.

I use and love the Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, it is non-irritating and removes what the makeup remover cloth doesn’t. It also makes for a nice facial massage too. If you sign up online, I think they have frequent specials, 25% off a few times a year.

That’s what I use, the La Roche Purifying Foaming Cleanser. I used to use Alpha Hydrox Foaming, but they reformulated it. I then tried a few more natural options, but they all irritated my skin. I’ve been happy with the La Roche.

I use RetinA and my skin can get cranky, CeraVe is good, is inexpensive, ceramides (make the skin act younger) and is fragrance free. It’s one of my favorite go-tos when my skin is aggravated and red. Their moisturizing lotion is also stellar.

I also like Paula’s Choice, but I’m using Olay Gentle Clean foaming cleanser right now. I also have Neogen Rose Cleansing Water. It’s a very gentle micellar water with a beautiful rose scent. I also have some of the Simple Oil Cleanser. I vary among them…

    Good morning Y’all….

Wearing Ghost Captivating EdT, a very non-descript, short acting clean scent that smells OK but is not memorable. Glad I only paid $12.99 for it…. LOL

I’ve never seen Ghost scents ANYWHERE in my area (mine came from Ebay)….where have y’all find other Ghost products in the US?

PS. Forgot to mention….so last night, per usual, my hubs says “Hey Honey, I didn’t really buy you anything for Mother’s Day, hope that’s OK….”

So I tell him, “OF COURSE YOU DID! You bought me a 3.3oz bottle of Ysatis off Ebay for $28, normally $100, and it will be here this week! Great job Honey!” He laughs and goes along with it, every single year….

My hubs is a wonderful guy but a lousy shopper. I no longer take it personally and I have been using it to my advantage for YEARS! 🙂 I’ll be smelling fabulous in a few days…..

Me and the hubs don’t do much in the way of gifts any more, but I did present a list of demands for Mother’s Day:
-sleep in (damn internal clock, I still woke up at the same time!)
-go to brunch at one of my favorite places
        -a nice bouquet of flowers
-to not have to make/order/organize dinner
-get a pedicure (went with another mom friend and had a great time).
It’s always easier to let them know what you want – or buy it yourself!

I’ve pretty much been in (the first, Calice Becker) Ines de la Fressange all weekend: peach, rose, ylang, sandalwood, benzoin. Sounds heavy but wears like lightweight challis. Pairing with this painting:
    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paul_Biva,_Still_life_with_flowers,_peaches_and_grapes,_oil_on_canvas,_81.2_x_101_cm.jpg

I’m not much of a visual person, TBH, so I think I’ll approach this week’s challenge by finding art to pair with whatever scent I want to wear.

I think this week I’ll do museum experiences I’ve had that were memorable. An early one, from high school, is the Duchamp exhibit in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was the first time I felt really breathtaken by visual art. I had a hard time thinking of a perfume for it, but eventually settled on Mitsouko.

    Happy Monday!

    1) It’s gonna be a high of 88F (31C) today. Whatta scorcha!

    2) SOTD of the day: A combo of Korres Jasmin shower gel, a knockoff Rodin skin oil (10 drops each of neroli, jasmine and rose in 3 0z of almond oil) and Cap Neroli. I smell like a Italian summer, and yep, I will be wearing this for the majority of the summer.

    3) I wanna be at the beach. Instead I am a grown up and at work, where I will be doing (VOLUNTARY) process documentation. Yeah, mother told me there would be days like this!

SOTD is Natori, since I realized I hadn’t worn it at all this past winter. It’s still nice.

Today’s SOTD is L’ Eau Trois by Diptyque, loads of herbs and smoky incense.
The image I chose is King Tut’s funeral mask, which I saw in 1979, in NYC.

I remember when that exhibit came through, there was so much excitement! It’s really cool you got to see it. I’m so superstitious though, I wouldn’t have even if I could have. Although I have no problem with Steve Martin doing King Tut ????

I remember the exhibit like it was yesterday, and the mask was mesmerizing – I must have stood in front of it for several minutes before my dad gave me the nudge to move along.

The embalming process always fascinated me, I used the museum experience to create a presentation for my class in school.

It is supposed to really warm up where I am, so I put on some Eau de Polder (L’essence de Mastenbroek). I like to wear this one in warmer temperatures. It is an oil, and is light, but if I put enough on, it does last quite well on me, surprisingly. And I can pair it with a painting that I like, Girl With a Pearl Earring (Johannes Vermeer). since both the perfume and painting are Dutch.

I think I did this backward because I chose my scent and then paired a painting with it. It’s a hot and humid day in Seattle, so I was immediately drawn to Ninfeo Mio. I’m pairing it with Venus and Adonis by Paolo Veronese:
    http://art.seattleartmuseum.org/objects/13949/venus-and-adonis?ctx=f773e8e9-92a9-480c-8929-1a51255a540d&idx=17

I’m wearing a funky black and white print 90s “vintage” cotton tent dress that I picked up at one of my favorite vintage/secondhand shops last weekend and gold dangling earrings of a lady’s winking face. Plus some bright pink lipstick. I’m feeling myself today! I got up early and took a walk with a little jogging mixed in, so that’s helping me feel good on Monday.

I didn’t think I would be able to play along, but after choosing my scent, I’ll give it a go. Wearing Eau de Miel (Honey gentle water) by L’Occitane. Since it’s for children, I thought of one of my absolute favorite paintings, A Virgin, by Abbot Thayer.

I used to live in MD, and would visit the Mall often. The Freer & Sackler were my favorite galleries and this painting is enormous and was in the stairway (not sure if it still is – it’s been a while). I love it.

SOTD = Kilian Woman in Gold

I am pairing it with El-Anatsui’s Bottle Cap series where he recycled metal bottle caps and weaves them into various sized pieces to hang. The pieces can be hung and accordioned in infinite ways to create a new art piece. When I think of Woman in Gold, its packaging visual reminds me of these art pieces and it changes based on the angle from which you view it. The perfume itself is versatile, from casual to sophisticated to office friendly and works in all temps although I have not yet worn it when it is scorching out!

    https://inhabitat.com/el-anatsui-upcycles-bottle-caps-into-gorgeous-glittering-tapestries/el-anatsui/

I have seen pieces of this series at the Clark Institute in Massachusetts, at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City Missouri and in a private collection (dining room art). There’s also one in the Newark Museum in New Jersey which I will definitely see this fall.

    In other news:
    – an enabler’s pin goes to perfumelover67. I bought the mousse to oil lotion from B&BW (buy 3 get 2 free) and gave one each to my sisters for Mother’s Day. I kept 3 and have started to use the Chamomile and Honey ????????????

I just sampled the Jasmine S and Marigold the other day. From a dab sample, so take this with a grain of salt, but I felt I didn’t need it. Very similar IMO to Arquiste Flor y Canto, which I have a decant of. Flor Y Canto is tuberose/magnolia/frangipani, not specifically jasmine sambac, but they are quite similar in feel, with the Arquiste having a slightly more substantial base.

Thanks! I think I’m going to be slightly more reasonable and just order a decant – I’d like a light-ish jasmine for summer, AND I love a marigold note, so I have high hopes for this one.

I tried it – it was a beautiful jasmine for about 45 minutes, then something else that was floral and delightful (the marigold, I assume) for another hour or so. Then it was amber for about 5 hours. It was lovely, but I really hadn’t expected the amber note to be so dominant. (And it was a bit much for a 95 degree day. I would happily wear it in temperatures under 80 degrees.)

I have a potted hyacinth in my room that is slowly opening and keeps making me do a double (smell) take as it is so close to Ostara, it’s so lovely and something that might match today’s Gainsborough. SotD = Eau de Magnolia

Magnolier a grandes fleurs, Pierre-Joseph Redouté:

    https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/510d47dc-8d27-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99

I am waiting for my neighbor’s magnolia tree to bloom so I can have a stealthy sniff.

Elisa P made my choice easy for me. I have a handful of FM samples sitting on my desk, so I pulled out the Magnolia. It is Perfume rather than the delicate lemon-cream-with-a-touch-of-green scent of the real flower. Such is the way of Art, though I do like EdM a lot.

If you have FM samples/decants marinating in your stash, do try to use them! My samples are more than a year old. They are beginning to fade. Carnal Flower smells more of honeysuckle now, and L’eau d’Hiver has mellowed considerably.

Oooooh, thanks for the heads-up on the FM perfumes! I’ll get on the ball and get my samples out for use.

Yes, I’d use them and enjoy them in the short term. This afternoon I remembered reading an interview with FM in which he stated his belief that perfumes have a relatively short shelf life. I guess he knows what he’s talking about!

You smell gorgeous! Was in MS for a graduation, and the magnolias were in full bloom on the campus. I picked one and have to agree with you. It started to smell a bit like the Malle scent on day 2.

Today I’m wearing ELDO Noel au Balcon. It’s somewhat reminiscent of a holiday pomander ball made from an orange stuck with cloves (I know it has tangerine, apricot, orange, honey, and cinnamon, but I feel sure of the cloves too!). I don’t find it especially Christmas-y or sexy-naughty but simply cheerful, bright and fun. Maybe it’s like one of the rather unusual brightly coloured, vibrant Rothkos. Here’s one: http://www.markrothko.org/orange-red-yellow/

yum, Noel au Balcon sounds wonderful.

I love Rothko, the work you linked to is great. Here’s a Rothko-inspired sweater I like:

My most wonderful family surprised me with two bottles of perfume for Mothers’ Day and I am in heaven. They are I Miss Violet and Unter den Linden… What am I wearing today? Why Rahele of course! I had a business meeting and I wanted to stick to something that I know exactly how it will be behave… it was perfect. To art match, I cheated and texted 57251. I think it must work all over the US? You text the message Send me…. but of course instead of ellipses you type in something. I typed Send me traveler, and the app (which I believe has been set up by SFMOMA and is made up art from SFMOMA’s collection exclusively) sent me Garry Winogrand’s photo of the TWA terminal at Kennedy from 1978. So here is my art match for Rahele : https://www.sfmoma.org/artwork/2016.225

No art to match my SOTD today. Back to trying Berdoues samples from the stash. SOTD = Vanira Moorea EdP. Very nice!

So very tired. I woke up at 3:30 this morning, had patchy sleep until 5:30, then said the heck with it (or an approximation of that) and got up. I’ve been watching a couple of guys renovating one of the tubs today, so there been some construction-y type noises. Things are looking promising.

No art, I don’t have the energy to look up anything. It’s the last week of preschool and we are all running on fumes – the kids are bouncing off the walls. Seville a l’aube today, although it’s gone now so I will look for an unused sample for the evening.
