Cats don’t wear perfume

Posted by Robin on 14 May 2018 9 Comments

Cats don’t wear perfume (that I know of), but my mum does. She wears Narciso Rodriguez For Her, and then she cuddles our cats so that they smell like Narciso Rodriguez For Her, too. I’ve always loved it on her, and on them, but it just doesn’t linger on me the same way. That said, it’s a really, really beautiful fragrance, and it seems to be at its best when there’s some body heat involved: It goes from floral and rosy at first sniff to a soft, velvety musk that lasts forever.

Happens to my cat too! I hug her, and some of my perfume sometimes lingers on her fur. Aldehydes, vintages and musks smell awesome on her.

Hi. I don’t want to sound alarming but perfumes are extremely toxic for cats as they lick their furs. Imagine you lick your own skin where you applied perfume on. I know it’s coming from a good place, you love your cats, this isn’t animal cruelty and you don’t mean to harm them, but perfumes on cats is a terrible idea.

Thank you. It rarely happens that she ends up with my perfume on her but I think I need to be more careful. Can’t have anything happening to my little gal.

I am aware of toxicity. It does not happen often, and the amount of perfume that gets on her fur is too small to be dangerous. But thank you anyway.

i think there’s a big difference between traces of a smell transferring to a cat’s fur and applying perfume to a cat. One is inevitable, the other is a dreadful idea.

Just as curtains pick up the scent of candles or cigarettes burned in a room, or a sweater the smell of your skin, and blankets pick up the smell of warm snoozing moggies, so those same moggies will sometimes walk around with a hint of l’heure bleue if they have been draping themselves around a perfumed neck. No that I’d know anything about that, of course. Ahem.

Oh, but cats do wear perfume. When I was in Florence I bought a bottle designed for them at Santa Maria Novella. I think they called it a deodorant, but it was in a plastic spray bottle and it smelled like roses. Both of my boys liked it and I was so happy to find them a suitable souvenir for once.

My mom bought me a similar one for dogs from SMN, supposedly with a bonus of repelling fleas/ticks, but after one glance at the ingredients I had to throw it out—cinnamon is a no-go for dogs(and an irritant for anyone) and it contained cinnamon oil. I was actually pretty annoyed that they would market something for dogs and not bother to research safe ingredients! Weirdly I’ll spray anything on myself but I’m a real helicopter mom when it comes to my dog ????

Awhile back Bernard Ellena and Maurice Roucel actually did come up with a perfume for cats called Oh My Cat!, now discontinued. It was manufactured by a French company called Dog Generation that makes grooming products for pets and claims that all their current products are tested for toxicity prior to use on animals. I think my cats smell quite nice on their own without any chemical enhancements but the round perfume bottle with a cat face on the front looks pretty hilarious.
