Friday scent of the day 5/11

Posted by Robin on 11 May 2018 236 Comments

Musk Friday is here! Our community project for today: wear a fragrance that fits the musk theme.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

My Parfumerie Générale Musc Maori (an idea I stole from reader BookishCook) is making me hungry.

Reminder: on 5/18 we're celebrating Museum Day. Wear a fragrance to match your favorite painting (or other object, anything you like!) in a museum, and if you can, post a link to an image.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Being that Frederic Malle’s Musc Ravageur is the only Musk-centric fragrance I have, that is probably what I’ll go with.

I have made a sample of that last a long time. I thought it might too warm here to wear today though.

I only have one Musk-centric scent too, so spritzed on a just a bit of Montale White Musk, since I usually wear it only in the winter.

Musc Maori is indeed very chocolate-y.

I am wearing SL Calir de Musc – definitely an animalic scent, but an idealized animalic, the one you can wear to work, in public. Soft, clean, fluffy animal with light floral notes.
It makes me think of the mysterious, eery white horse the hedgehog saw in the animated film ‘Hedgehog in the fog’.

Oh, and I wrote some haikus for the haiku challenge. I plan to post them tomorrow.

My plan to do a week of Smell Bent musks dissolved after one day – I love them but turns out only in small doses! I am wearing Mûre et Musc which is probably my favorite musk-based perfume; I just think it’s such a brilliant idea.

      Twins!

This is a scent I’ve had in travel spray from a coffret- and I rarely wear it. Glad you love it…there’s something that doesn’t appeal too much to me. I’ll see if today changes my mind…

Today’s SOTD is Alessandro Dell’ Acqua – spicy floral/oriental (peony/geranium/coriander) with an incense and musk dry down.
It reminds me of Amouage’s Dia but not as heavy on the florals, and it’s drier in the drydown.

A parent gave me pomegranate noir by jo malone yesterday for teacher appreciation week. By the time I got home it was overwhelming in the car so I exchanged it but how nice to get perfume in stead of another coffee mug. Especially since I do not drink coffee. Ended up with pear freesia something.

Nice gift! That was so thoughtful, and great you could exchange for another goodie!
My dean occasionally receives fragrant gifts which she promptly hands over to me as she knows I love/wear fragrance. The last goodie was Jo Malone’s Nectarine Blossom & Honey, boy was I ever so appreciative!

It’s great to get such a nice gift, especially when it’s exchangeable. I like PN but for me it’s a winter scent. I have to ask though… Are you sure that it was PN that was overwhelming? I’m asking because on multiple occasions when I was buying anything from a JM counter, they would spray a packing tissue not with the scent I was buying but rather with their signature scent or the newest one.

Yeah, it’s definitely been reformulated: back in the day people were screaming about how filthy it was (I never tried it), and now it’s just so polite and run-of-the-mill. Nice, but neutered.

1986-vintage Montana Parfum de Peau, which has held up perfectly over the decades: all those explosive top notes are intact, including aldehydes and the usual eighties overdose of blackcurrant, and then (hours later) ALL the animal base notes including musk, so dirty and sexy.

I always find it hilarious to read perfume “experts” informing us that scents have a shelf life of just a few years, or eBay listings warning that a vintage fragrance is thirty years old and must not be worn. I’ve got scents from the sixties that would say otherwise. Yes, they can go bad, sometimes quickly: but they can also last for decades in perfect shape.

I don’t have a lot of predominant musk in my collection. Earlier this week someone wore Dame New Musk oil and that triggered my remembrance of New Musk Man. I shouldn’t have to have been reminded, since New Musk Man is one of my desert island scents. I am almost to the end of the travel size and I’ve used all the samples. Thankfully, I went ahead and ordered a full bottle this week.

It’s FriYAY! 9 more days of school too…. YEEHAW! 🙂

Went with Body Shop Black Musk, which shouldn’t raise any red flags with the Perfume Grinch at work. Musk isn’t the main star here in my opinion…this is a fruity vanilla.

    Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Musc Maori does that to me too, Robin! I wear it mostly on cold and snowy days when hot chocolate is not immediately to hand.

I started today with a spritz of Sana Jardin Nubian Musk, which got scrubbed. I really enjoy other fragrances in the Sana Jardin line but found this one oppressively heavy and sweet—at least for a warm morning. Now I’m in Nomenclature Shi_so (not musky), which I bought last night and couldn’t wait to get into. So happy they started selling 10ml travel sprays.

    Happy Friday!

    1) In a combo of Narcisso Rodriguez Fleur Musc ( from a sample) and Fresh Cream. I like Fleur Musc- it’s powdery, peppery and ,usky to be sure. Not very rosey, though. The Fresh Cream sweetens and lifts the fragrance up a bit.

    2) This week is done! I plan on yoga, biking, sleeping in. green smoothies and soothing spring soup for the weekend, although my friends wanna PARTY.

SOTD is Chandler Burr Untitled Series 2 No. 8 (some celebuscent, IIRC), which has “peony” as a note. Wanted to compare peony note to my lovely peonies in my garden. Not a big surprise, but there’s no comparison! Peonies in fragrance mostly smells like pink tween scents to me, which is a shame.

I really need to start wearing it more, but because it was so expensive I tend to hesitate. I also do that with the two discontinued perfumes that I own because they’re discontinued. However, life is short and unpredictable and I should just go for it. I smell amazing.

I quite like musk, and was rather surprised to find that I only have two scents with ‘musk’ in the name. I mean, sure, probably most of my scents have some sort of musk (autocorrect wanted me to say ‘muck’, ha) as an ingredient, but I am too lazy to sort thru ingredient lists.

So SOTD is Dame New Musk Oil.

(and my other ‘musk’ scent is a Dame too: Verbena Freesia & Musk, but it’s not summery enough for that)

Not participating as I’m still away from home. Chose Misia from my Chanel line-up. This is one I dedicated a few years ago as a Date Night perfume; more specifically dates where we go to the symphony. That’s really the only time I ever wear it. Since I’ve been out of town I’ve worn it a few times as a daytime perfume and I’ve developed a new appreciation for it.

One never knows what a new season will bring. I always pull out my seasonal favorites in anticipation of a change in weather, but seem to gravitate in a totally different and unanticipated direction than in seasons past. I think I could spend the entire spring in lipstick and cosmetic scents without even passing a glance at a spring floral or greenie. I guess it’s the violet that makes them springy-y, and also addictive to me.

    Happy Friday!

    SOTD: Um…

First I put on some Ferre 20, which The CEO bought me when we were in Rome in 2010. It’s basically a nice powdery musk with aldehydes, rose, blackberry, and benzoin — sort of no-brainer Duh, that smells nice.

Then, I got distracted while going through My Perfume Stuffs, looking for a box (WHERE ISSSS ITTTTT I KNOW I SAW IT RECENTLY), and found a package with Un Air de Samsara in it, so I sprayed that on too. Lord help me.

Mugler Over the Musk from a decant I got last year in a split and haven’t worn since. I like it but I don’t think it really justifies its higher price. But it’s nice. And the name fits perfectly to the CP.

And now I’m back to one of those Fridays that you are glad it’s finally the last work day of the week and cannot believe it’s the last work day of the week already! 😉

Hi twin! I just love this perfume. I agree about the price, but I’ve never paid that much for any perfume. Everytime Mugler has a sale, I try and talk myself into it though ???? have a great weekend!

I’m glad you did that split because otherwise I would have never got to try it: not a single store around here carries anything but standard Mugler line.

On Wednesday I mentioned that I’d sampled a perfume at one of our good niche stores in Houston (Kuhl-Linscomb) but wasn’t too impressed. However, by the evening I had become addicted to it, as the dry-down just got better and better, so yesterday I went and bought it! It was the last bottle and they’re discontinuing the line, so it was 40% off, a good deal. It’s Nez à Nez Bal Musqué (I like the pun in the title). My take on it is that it has a lot of the musky aspects I love about MKK without smelling quite so much like B.O.; it’s more floral and sweet. Notes include Bergamot, Orange, Licorice, Cinnamon, Cherry, Magnolia, Ylang-ylang, Rose, Benzoin, Leather, Tolu, Vanilla, Musk. I do notice the liquorice and orange a lot at the start.

I liked some of the Nez a Nez fragrances. I’m not sure they did very well overall, though.

I remember testing some of them in the past and most struck me as too sweet. Some people would probably say this one is too sweet, too, but with the other notes, I still find it very appealing, in a comfortable kind of way. It’s a sort of snuggly musk scent.

Abdul Kareem Egyptian Musk oil. I’ve had this bottle since 2012, and it still smells great. I bought it from Amazon (no affiliation). And also a spray of Cuir Sacre (thank you Koyel).

Musc Ravageur for me this morning. I bought a split about five years ago, and don’t think I’ll replace it when it’s gone. I’m glad I have it, but it’s not a “must have in my cabinet forever” scent to me.

It’s one I get very strong cravings for (usually in fall) but can become overwhelming if I wear it too often. I find it similar to MdO Musc, which is easier for me to wear.

Missed out on the project. Sprayed a ton of Copal Azur from a sample, then instantly decided it was the Wrong Scent for the day. But i was already running late. Changed my mind later about the wrongness as it kept nudging at my awareness and telling me its stories and winning me over. I am a pushover for incense, though, and this is an interesting one.

Looking forward to reading everyone’s posts later on, but posting quickly since I have a moment for a change. I actually love gentle white musks. SOTD is J’Adore Voile de Parfum, which has powdery rose/Iris over a soft musk base. Sometimes it’s a little sneezy, but today it’s sitting just right.

I was indecisive and rushed this am and did quick spritzes of Derek Lam Silent Street and Diptyque Fleur de Peau and decided to go with Fleur de Peau for a full, first-time wearing. I have to say it kind of bugs me (sort of smells like wet plaster, white musk, and something vaguely poop-ish). I wish I’d gone with Silent St which reminds me of my trip to Hawaii since I wore it on the flights. It’s the perfume equivalent of walking into a building on a hot, sweaty day and getting that first refreshing blast of air con.

Haha! No one else has told me that and I think I’m the only one that gets that as I haven’t seen anyone else mention that. Most people perceive it as clean and inoffensive so not sure what’s giving me that impression, though.

I have to admit that the Musc Maori scent makes me feel a bit uncomfortable in terms of cultural appropriation. There was a Bulgari perfume that had a moko design on the bottle a while back which also made me wonder about consultation, permission , etc. I was also curious about today’s image thinking it must be some culturally significant carving. Funny search of an hour tracing down the image and I see that the carving is from a gateway that sits at the entrance to a holiday park/ campground at Hauhora heads in Northland. It’s contemporary and who knows who carved it? So there you go…I suspect that I’m the only one who finds that interesting!
Final botanical painting class today. I’m painting a stalk of clover if I am allowed. Last week was three hours of exercises using yellow paint.

SOTD = Soivohle Alpha Musc. This is some seriously animalic stuff, folks! The first whiff of it is Eau de Barnyard. And the second whiff too. Maybe even the third. After some time, it calms down to a spicy, unisex, not clean musk scent.
