Thursday scent of the day 5/10

Posted by Robin on 10 May 2018 302 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Body Time Egyptian Musk oil mixed with some unscented lotion.

Reminder: 5/11 will be Musk Friday...you know what to do!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Good Morning. I picked Bruno Fazzolari’s Fontevraud. Felling good and smelling Thor-geous!!

Teased my mother by telling her Mother’s Day Gift would be late because Kris Jenner’s make up line did not drop until Mother’s Day. ????

I agree, but they don’t do themselves any favours. They don’t have samples and are only selectively available in a few major centers. If it wasn;t for a fellow perfume enthusiast, I would never have found the house, much less the scent.

IMHO, they simply are not prestigious enough to remove themselves so throughly from the end use customer.

Good morning all… today is going to be Nuit de Bakelite by Naomi Goodsir. Admittedly a bit scared to wear it because it is strong as all get out. It seems like a reboot of Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene, but on plutonium. I mean it glows like radium, even. Hyper coriander/bergamot/lemon and then melting plastic. Curious.

I have enjoyed what I’ve tried from zoologist so far, but their scents are STRONG! I wish they could be dabbed instead of sprayed; their projection and lasting power are like extraits and those are usually meant to be dabbed on. I liked nightingale a lot but ended up having to scrub it off with hand sanitizer because I didn’t want to suffocate everyone around me after two teeny sprays from the sample vial.

Skin chemistry is amazing. I love a lot from Zoologist, but some are too fleeting on my skin, like Macque and Elephant. Moth lasts all day, can’t wait to get my travel bottle, but it’s not overpowering. I can’t find a couple samples that I want to revisit and Nightingale is one of them, I don’t recall it being a “big” scent at all. Other houses, Imaginary Authors for one, have scents with huge sillage that last all day and night on me. Such are the differences that make perfumes a fascinating obsession :)

I’m layering Jo Malone’s Red Roses with Wood Sage & Sea Salt. I found them to go well together, better than the suggested Lime Basil or the Black Ceder Wood/Juniper.

SOT early morning Yardley Iris (for 2 hours). I found this bottle in my mother’s closet last night. She said someone gave it to her for Christmas a year ago. She sprayed it once and as usual she put it aside. No way for her to bretay her Tabu.

Iris opened with a huge blast of alcohol that lasted for 1 minute. Then I smelled some lavender and oatmeal. Not overwhelming, not interesting, not long lasting and no IRIS.
It became close to the skin almost right away and it dissapeared after 2 hours. Good to spray after a shower before going to bed. Kind of comfy.

I am wearing now FM Une Fleur de Cassie, which has musk and I adore.
    Have a great day NST.

Awwww your mom is loyal to her Tabu? Mine is super loyal to her Allure. She used to wear various things we would get her or my dad would get her, but she’s been on the Allure things for about 20 years now.

Tabu has been her only signature perfume her whole life. She has a supply that will last for the rest of her life and beyond. She also uses the body lotion and body powder. Very, very faithful to it!

Huh. I had a bottle of Yardley Iris and it was very iris-y. It was actually recommended by Perfume Shrine as a dupe for Hiris, which I love but wears too lightly on me to be practicable.

Sadly, I do not get any iris, mostly lavender. It is the first time I try it, so I will wear it few more times to see if that changes. I have not tried Hermes Hiris yet, so unfortunately I cannot compare, but I see myself wearing it at bed time for its simplicity and lack of staying power.

I’m intrigued by the little spots of green to the west of the delta… imagining what is there that is growing… I’ve never been to Egypt before, and my knowledge of country is almost exclusively about current politics . . . but I do remember that the river flows south to north, and that Speke correctly identified Lake Victoria (which he named of course) as the true source. I love the whole idea of river deltas–what animal and plant life they support, and of course the inevitable humanity that settles around them. That picture is really great.

The big blob right next to the Nile Valley is the Faiyum Oasis. The little spots out in the desert should be the Bahariya Oasis, it looks like.

Look up the Faiyum mummy portraits if you’ve never heard of them—they’re so cool.

Continuing on with my untouched samples today. The one I’m wearing is L’Artisan Arcana Rosa. It reminds me of Voleur de Roses, in a good way. I recently bought a full bottle of Voleur de Roses, so I probably won’t go any further with Arcana Rosa. On the other hand I really love the dark rose genre. Hmmm…

Arcana Rosa might work for you. It has vetiver, sandalwood and cedar instead of patchouli and plum (according to Fragrantica) so if those work well on your skin it might be worth a try.

I am testing Fendi from a vintage mini. How did I never pop this one open?? it’s GORGEOUS. And, of course long discontinued and fiercely sought after, and I’ll probably never find any to buy. I’d forgotten I had it.

I also found one more Samsara mini in that box. GAH. I’ll be putting that one up on the blog for $15 (the first one found a new home already).

Vintage Fendi was STUNNING, this molasses-dark floral, so Italian. I bought it when it was launched and wore the hell out of it (you can imagine it smelled great on a man). So you smell great today!

Mals, don’t mind at all if you tell people that you are putting things for sale on your blog, but would appreciate it if you would not list prices here. People frequently ask me if they can list things for sale, and I always say no — listing prices just seems one step too close, and not in keeping with not letting other people who don’t have their own blogs list items for sale.

Hope you understand! And if you’ve done it recently and I missed it, sorry for that too, I’m a bit distracted lately.

I’m wearing The Body Shop Nigritella today. The sub-name on it is Oriental Orchid, but it’s apparently based on an orchid that grows in the Alps, so maybe they should’ve called it Alpine Orchid? Anyway, I like it.. it’s basically a gourmand-ish tuberose, but I don’t find it too sweet. Tuberose, vanilla, and a sort of cocoa-ish hint. The cumulative effect is a bit root beer-ish.

Anyhoo, I’m wearing D&G La Tempérance 14, which I haven’t worn in over 2 years. I remember not liking it back then, but I guess my “palate” likes ambrette now, because I like it a lot today! :)

I’m wearing Full Bloom from Anjolie Ayurveda. I ordered this one and Orchid Vanille (on sale for $8 each), and then the owner emailed me to say she was throwing in their other two scents of Grove Promenade and Nectar Oriental for free! Not bad for $16.
I think the scent is already wearing off since its a botanical, but I have the roller ball in my purse for seconds. Very pretty with a realistic magnolia note mixed in with other happy flowers.

A friend of mine loves Egyptian Musk – apparently it was Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s signature scent as well.

Unfortunately, I’m anosmic to most musks so there’s very little in my collection. But I do love (and can actually smell!) the musky base in Ostara, so I’m wearing that.

In other news, we ordered a new mattress from one of those online companies. I HATE it, but luckily they have a generous return policy. However, we already unloaded the old mattress on CL, so I suspect we’ll be playing musical mattresses for a bit. If anyone has a mattress they love PLEASE tell me about it!

Here! We do have a mattress we love and it’s not from one an online retailer- we tried that first, and also returned that after much back and forth. Anyways – our latex/coil combo mattress is from Bay Bed in Santa Cruz, CA. They have the most unassuming store you can imagine, no odd sales people and also none of the “We invented the only mattress that is good” stuff. They were able to deliver the mattress (we live 2.5 hours from Santa Cruz). Their matresses are assembled in Santa Fe Springs, CA. We also have different layers on each side.

I really do love our mattress, and I’m pretty much the princess and the pea kind of person when it comes to them.

I’m truly glad to hear it’s not just me. I’ve tried out several mattresses in stores, and pretty much all of my friend’s beds (including a top of the line Sleep Number that cost something like $6000) and nothing feels right. Meanwhile, my husband says “They’re all fine. Just pick one.” I wish it was that easy!

I love my mattress and I get neck, hip, back pain with the Wrong One. Had it for about 2 years now. I didn’t see our exact model on the website, but this one has similar or same features. Maybe this is an updated version.
Pros: It’s soft but supportive, doesn’t get too hot, doesn’t move when someone else moves. I never wake up with sore hips (side sleeper).
Cons: it’s high and our frame makes it even higher. I could practically use a step stool.

You are describing me to a T, as well as my mattress (though
I’ve never noticed it being high.) It’s a double-sided pillowtop (one of the first models) by Serta or one of those big US makers.

I’d love to recommend mine but it was purchased in 1994. I’ve been sleeping on it since then, less a few years, and it’s seriously as good as new. All we do is flip it over about once per year and it has not deteriorated at all since I got it last century.

Once or twice a year, I think about replacing the mattress (there’s a memory foam topper on top of it, so I think the mattress lifespan has been somewhat extended). A flyer from Saatva came in the mail today–they have Saatva (innerspring), Loom & Leaf (memory foam) and Zenhaven (all natural latex purported to be hypoallergenic.)
Prices seem less outrageous than many others, but I tend to get overwhelmed by the decision all over again. But you have to act–let us know the outcome!

I glanced at their site earlier in our buying process and will have to check it again. The one we have now is from Avocado (a similar site) – it’s a perfectly fine product and very highly rated, but just not comfortable for me personally.

I’ve been sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress for about 10 years now. It took a little getting used to, partly b/c the old mattress was SO bad. We were able to try them at a brick & mortar store before we took the plunge and purchased. Different models definitely did make a difference in what I felt. No regrets.

We have a Kingsdown mattress. Best one I’ve ever slept on. We tried several at Sleep Country and found one that was perfect (for us). Individual pocket coils are important as you won’t feel your partner turning over. It’s the mattress I’d buy again and again. Several people at work have a Kingsdown as well (I’ve recently discovered).

There’s also a Kingsdown in our spare bedroom; our family and/or company always comment on how comfy it is and how good they sleep. Good luck!

      Good luck.

    1) Old school: Abdul Kareem Musk oil, which takes me ALL the way back to the late 90s. Super subtle, very pretty and perfect for warmer weather-= and CHEEP.

    2) This week tho: Some random street person in Portland verbally attacked me with epithets and made to physically attack me…so I punched them in the mouth. And generaLLY BEAT THE STUFFING of out them.

I’ve been really busy this morning and last night with the dogs. We had thunderstorms pass through last night and more are on the way. It’s cooler than yesterday but muggy. So I will be in Vetiver Dance today.

I can’t wait for the leather, amber, patchouli, musk, oakmoss and vetiver dry down.

I am wearing Fleur de Peau. I really, really like it. What I really dislike is this week – I am not having a great week, and I just want it to end so I can reboot myself.

There are two Canada geese and four goslings outside my classroom window. Thank goodness for cute baby animals, because they are the best thing in my day so far.

Started out in ELDO Yes I Do from a TL dabber sample. This definitely needs a spraying/dousing. Pretty LOTV but faded quickly so gave myself a spritz of Commodity Nectar from a Sephora sample (my 2nd one). Finally found a Commodity I really like. It’s juicy grapefruity citrus with orange blossom and it stays pretty juicy and lasts quite a long time in me. Such a happy scent and the name suits it. Recommended for citrus/OB lovers!

LOVE that photo of the Nile delta!!!!! Gosh, I would frame that and put it on my wall.

Anyhooo… less charmed by my sotd, Note di Profumum’s Osa… officially the one I least like in the line, now that I am wearing it all in. Too spiky, too suntan lotion…. not fitting my mood at all. So much for my plan to blind pick a sample this AM. I’d probably prefer this one on a hot day gardening outside. But stuck at my desk trying to write old ideas about women’s advancement in a new and fresh way? Drinking my “not coffee in a million years” and blowing warm air on my cold hands?? Banging my forehead? This perfume is not my muse.

One of NASA’s cooler features is all their imagery is available online, for free download. Since the image credit is from Goddard I believe the image above is a satellite image, which is available but not as a tidy download file. https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?p=geographic&l=VIIRS_SNPP_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Aqua_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor(hidden),MODIS_Terra_CorrectedReflectance_TrueColor,Reference_Labels,Reference_Features,Coastlines&t=2018-04-01-T00%3A00%3A00Z&z=3&v=27.741538247485877,28.619618260079474,34.21907730998588,32.02098544757948

I did a very quick search and found this also awesome image of the delta at night, photographed from the International Space Station: https://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos/photo.pl?mission=ISS025&roll=E&frame=9858. You can download it and print it at a Costco or Sam’s for framing very inexpensively.

There’s an explanation of what you can see in the image here. https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=46820

Oh, I had a sheltie once names “Flair.” She was quite a loyal little dog (she had no time for anyone, two legs or four, but me), but a bit yappy. A beautiful blue merle. Smart as a whip, too. Good for you for spoiling him! We could all use a bit of that.

He is the fourth sheltie in my life. His name is Milo, and he is a sable merle–lots of white in his coat with little patches of brown. He has one brown eye and one blue eye.

The first two shelties were sables and looked just like Lassie. Smaller than Lassie though. I had one when I was a little girl, and the other I got as a newlywed. My husband brought her home one night as a surprise. I had asked for her, so she wasn’t a total surprise :)

The third one was a blue merle – silver, black and brown fur with blue eyes. He was so beautiful and the calmest dog I have ever been around. We lost him a year and a half ago, and I still miss him and think about him daily.

Oh, so sorry! It’s so hard when they go. I think of the dogs I’ve been lucky enough to have with me, especially my last little shelter dog. She was a brindle pit mix, and if a dog could be described as “kind,” she definitely was. So incredibly sweet and gentle. Glad you have Milo with you today! Give him an extra smooch from us ❤️????

    SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’eau

It felt right for today and it fits the theme. I know what I’m wearing tomorrow – watch out world! Nothing skanky.

I happened to stop by Kiehl’s to take a whiff of Musk. It could be my nose but it smells like it had been neutered.

Right now, I’m sitting at a Le Pain Quotidien. A couple walked in with a tiny poodle on a leash. It was allowed in because It’s a Service Dof, goshdarnit! You have got to be kidding me! Next time I’ll show up with a ummm ummmm turtle, no, rabbit, no, lizard, wait, how about a bat? and I will claim that it is a service animal. Ridiculous.

It showed that the owner was not responsible enough to let the dog do it’s duty outside before bringing it in. Most of the time, the “bad behavior” is because owners are thoughtless and irresponsible. That poor dog probably had to go for the last several hours and could no longer hold it.

Oh, I totally know it was the owners fault. It’s the same way with kids, the parents just keep shopping even when the child is telling them they need to go to the bathroom. I’ve at times volenteerd to take their children to the bathroom for them.

    • Deva says:

Ha! I actually have an rx from my MD that I’ve never used. But: I will add here that my dog is better behaved and cleaner than most children I have come across recently (and many adults!). Not sure why so many places are anti-dog. Also, I will put here that I’m a responsible pet owner and clean up after my pet. However, it seems California is anti-trash can too, because they are rare and elusive creatures in this state. If you do find one, it’s overflowing all over the place.

I have been wondering about this since I started this traveling gig. It seems nationwide and I don’t know if it’s because budget cuts have reduced staffing, so there are fewer people employed at the city/state level to monitor and empty the cans. So they just reduce or remove the cans all together?! Very strange! And I’ve never been ANYWHERE that locks their dumpsters like they do here in California! That just continues to blow my mind! ????

One reason to lock your dumpsters is bears. And yes, there are black bears in Napa.

          • Deva says:
            10 May 2018 at 4:32 pm

Pretty sure just about any bear proof handle would fix that problem. These are actual keyed locks. To keep people out. I don’t think bears carry keys????

          • kpaint says:
            10 May 2018 at 5:41 pm

There’s a local beach here that stopped providing trash receptacles because they no longer wanted to fund them.

‘Tis a pity because it’s a great beach with perfect water for swimming but it’s absolutely fcking filthy with trash blowing everywhere.

Locking dumpsters are standard here, too. But because people pay to have trash picked up and don’t want people doing drive-by trash dumps, which is understandable.

Smaller towns usually have a refuse station where you can take your trash & recycling. You have to pay to drop it, but that’s probably what you ought to be using. I’m assuming the situation is similar in CA as WA.

Right after 9-11, trash cans in n NUC were far and few in between due to fear that they will become receptacles for bombs.

Many places here do that too, on their patios. The bagel place we frequent some mornings is great like that. T-Rex has won over a lot of people, and now they bring her water, biscuits, and a whole bunch of attention. She’s a people magnet. Waiting for my van to be washed the other day and everyone waiting for their car had to come over and pet her and ask about her (“What is she?”).People just come up to me and start talking because of her. Walking down the street, doing my laundry, where ever, when ever. I’ve had some very interesting conversations and it’s all because T-Rex draws them in. I’m a bit anti-social myself, so it’s been interesting. I’ve gotten a lot of info from the locals about Napa and the huge changes that are happening here. It’s like I’m an insider. If I was alone, those conversations never would have happened, I’m pretty sure. So it’s good for both of us????????

In Ostara because I felt like it today – it’s lovely, and I’m tempted.
Been meaning to mention this: I got an email invitation from ZGO perfumery the other day that they are having a special event with a person from Parfums de Nicolai. June 7th, 5.45 – 7.45 or so. I’m a little bummed because we will be out of the country – but perhaps some of the Bay area folks are interested? ZGO is in the Castro in San Francisco.

Robin, I looove that photo! I think it’s cool how the Delta, appropriately, looks sort of like a lotus or papyrus plant.

How the heck is it Thursday again?!?

    SOTD is Shalimar (EDC).

I never made the Nile delta — papyrus plant connection before, but now that you have mentioned it, I totally see it.

I pulled out a travel spray of Mure et Musc today. After spraying I remembered why I never wear it- I don’t hate it but it doesn’t really do anything for me either. Then at school the little boy sitting next to me said “something smells bad in here”. It was either the scent of 12 5-year-olds, or he REALLY didn’t like my perfume!

That one is a solid meh for me too, but I plan to wear it tomorrow, lol. Hopefully I can use of the last of my sample.
I don’t think it smells “bad” though, I’m guessing it was something else. Kids do just say whatever pops into their heads though don’t they?

Nothing from my travel selection of Chanels seemed quite right this morning, so I tapped my emergency purse stash and finished off a very old sample vial of L’Artisan La Chasse Aux Papillons.

It’s one I pull out every spring but never end up wearing. And ya know, it was an early rabbit hole fave, but I think it’s one I admire rather than enjoy wearing any more. Once it dies down I’ll spray BoE.

My day started like this:I had an admin day planned which means I can sleep in a bit and only go to work at 8.6:35 TWO colleagues informed me they were not pitching…theatre lists start at 7 with preparations galore to be done.Well:I got up/got dressed/grabbed my toothbrush and left for work.In that order.Nothing in between. No perfume.
I managed a quick shower/brushing teeth at work at least.Plus foresight of always having clean undies/socks/toothpaste at work for days we work really late and I basically just crash there on a sofa in the tearoom.Life of a nurse.
Late morning I did remember I had a 2ml Perfume atomiser on my keychain I was gifted last year by a colleague who retired. It was still full of…..Parfums de Rosine Twill Rose.Instant pick-me-up at work, and the day was full of laughs and wonderful patients.Perfume does that, you know?It makes everything JUST.BETTER.

Dipping into my untried samples today, so I am theme twins with PriscillaE.

SOTD = ELdO’s Rien, from the sample stash. On me, it is one of the strangest scents I have ever tried. It’s up there with Gucci Rush in its weirdness.

The main notes I got from this were gasoline and/or phenol, incense, sun-warmed skin, and musk (definitely not the laundry kind!). Almost none of those were listed on Fragrantica.

    Back again!

What’s more exciting than seeing Thierry Wasser at Bergdorfs? Seeing my first cousin at Barneys! He reps for several perfume and beauty lines at Barneys (Arquiste, Costume National) and has his own business of introducing eastern skincare to the U.S. and vice versa. I will leverage this nugget in the future – mwahahaha.

I’m a Chatty Cathy and I asked one of the SAs which perfume was the newest from Arquiste. The SA didn’t know so she asked my cousin who proceeded to spray blotters with El and Ella. I didn’t like either. I rattled off which ones I know and liked and he was shocked that I knew the line! Anyway, he gave me a bunch of Architect’s Club samples because I said I like it! He can get perfume for me for 50% off. Since he is usually a no show for family get-togethers, I don’t think I will be taking advantage of the % off often, if at all.

Wearing a few drops of vintage Miss Dior from a spash bottle. I have to decant some to a sprayer to see if there’s any difference.

One more day. My cubby mate is off tomorrow so I may have to try something light that can pass off as ‘not perfume’.
