Thursday scent of the day 1/11

Posted by Robin on 11 January 2018 280 Comments

Almost-Friday, at last. What fragrance are you wearing?

For the 2017 project Take it down a notch, I'm in a little dab of Christian Dior Poison.

Reminder: on 1/12, we're doing Rinse, repeat...pick a favorite community project from the past, and do it again. (If you need a reminder, here are the lists for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2018, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve combined Spicy Scents with wear something from Yves Saint Laurent and picked Opium Homme. Could also be Go Big or Go Home.

Now for coffee and lots of it.

Vintage Yvresse today, from a half-used bottle I found at a perfume discount store. I don’t know if I love it but it is very unique.

    Enjoy your Thursday everyone!

Vintage Yvresse is fascinating, though: bright and vivacious, but with that dark chypre undercurrent. I had a bottle when it was still called Champagne, traded it away, realized my mistake, and bought another bottle under the new name before they had a chance to reformulate it.

As far as I can tell it’s one of the last old-school oakmoss-heavy chypres (the IFRA restrictions on oakmoss went into effect a few years later but its use was already on the downswing as scents became increasingly lighter or foodier), so treasure it.

It’s funny, my bottle has verrry little oakmoss. I’ve smelled a few bottles, but now I can’t remember if I found it significantly chypre.

For chypre-chypres, YSL Y can’t be best though. In the same trip I picked up another bottle of Y. Shame what YSL is like now.

Another Forgotten Friend: Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan. A heavenly amber and perhaps my favorite.
I really need to reorganize my perfume cabinet soon. I am not wearing so many of my favorite perfumes at all and that is a real waste!

Ha. I’m looking to find a way to organize. Too often I grab what is in front. Too, too many forgotten friends.

Just out of curiosity, is there a scent journal or dairy to keep track of collections and what was worn?

Not on this site. Some people make their own spreadsheets/databases. I don’t keep track personally. I know there is a scent of the day tracker you can use on the Basenotes forum but I don’t use it.

I have a spreadsheet, which is often in need of updating, but using it in the morning to select a scent is too time-consuming. And then where is the bottle? I don’t have that info on my spreadsheet.

I also grab whatever is handy, especially in the mornings when I am rushing.
I am not sure if there is a journal or dairy to keep track. I know many people use Excel to do it. I am sure someone else here can chime in. I particularly do not have the patience to do it.

I use the Basenotes.net SOTD once I get to work. I usually take a minute to log in at Basenotes and then NST every morning for a couple of minutes.
When you click on your scent, it will show you the last time you wore it. That’s as much time as I can devote….30 seconds! LOL!

SOTD is from another forgotten decant: TDC Bois d’Iris.

Need to unearth my sample of VCA Bois d’Iris and fix the differences between the two firmly in my memory (I tend to confuse them).

Have we done a theme like “Same Name, Different Perfume” before?

Continuing the Vol de Nuit Signature Scent Challenge in straight vintage EDT this morning, because I have to go to a meeting in one of those rooms where the chairs are all way too close together and I don’t want to gas anybody out. Will probably take my little decant of the EDC and respritz later on – might be an interesting comparison, actually.

I love Osmanthe Yunnan, but have the same challenge with its longevity, which is a pity. I wish that Hermes would consider adding matching body cremes to the Hermessence line, as Jo Malone did, as I think that the combination could really amp up the longevity of those lovely edts. Iris Ukiyoe is the other one from the Hermessence line that is sadly very fleeting on my skin.

Still doing Dealer’s Choice all week and my theme is Simplicity (five ingredients or fewer), so today pre-shower I wore 4711 eau de cologne (it probably has like twenty ingredients but it smells like bright citrus and herbs and nothing more), and then for the day I put on a couple of serious spritzes of vintagesque Samsara (practically nothing except bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood, but so perfectly judged and balanced).

Today I’m wearing Memo Marfa, which is way too sweet for me. I’m not sure if it’s the tuberose, or the vanilla or both.

Okay, so here is the verdict: Black Perfecto is more potent, and it has a leather note that I think contributes a lot to the oomph. The edp didn’t last as long and had less distinctive character. For me the winner is Black Perfecto. I bought a big bottle of the edp dirt cheap on Notino last year, not sure if I want to splurge on the BP or just wait until/if it makes it to the discounters. I wonder why it still hasn’t launched in the US?

Another scent I like to wear in cooler temperatures is Guerlain Herba Fresca. I bought it last winter, and wore it a lot. I tried it in the summer, and the heat brought out some notes I didn’t care for.

My sweet MIL took me out for a birthday breakfast, so the day has started out nicely. I am wearing a half-spritz of MFK Lumiere Noire pf, but it’s starting to get faint. Now I have a choice: reapply? Or move on to another favorite — maybe L’Arte di Gucci? or it’s warm enough for Le Temps d’une Fete.

I bought myself a vintage 1990 bottle of Parfum d’Hermes off ebay (I blame Kafkaesque), but it is definitely not the powerhouse thingy she says it was, and I don’t love it. I put on four spritzes of the thing the other evening, and when The CEO walked in he was all “MMM something smells good in here, you smell good, you smell REALLY good,” but I could barely smell it. I don’t know why. Maybe my nose is busted.

I’m revisiting the match a character to a scent challenge. Lately I have been reading and loving the Cas Russell books by SL Huang (the first is called Zero Sum Game). The main character is a tough loner with a math superpower, so she can for example dodge bullets by quickly calculating the angle based on the sound. She solves hardboiled mysteries with slight supernatural twists – think Kinsey Millhone meets Dark Angel, plus math.

    Obviously, I am wearing Knowing.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! There are 30 yr olds that look way older than they are, and 50 yr olds that look way younger.

I think a good bit of that is attitude, and making a conscious choice to stay young by staying engaged in things! (Good skincare and a bit of sleep never hurt either….) 🙂

I just turned 50 in November. It is quite something, but although mentally I mostly feel about 12, my body is sending very distinct messages that I’m not. (And as a doctor I know, unfortunately, that age is more than a number.) Still Joanna Lumley is 70 and still seems to have a great time. Watched her and Jennifer Saunders in Absolutely Champers, about their visit to the Champagne region. Great fun!

Came out to the coast again, but today is a scrubber: halacious winds that are making the van dance all around, torrential rains and a bit of hail. Yesterday was gorgeous though! Did a couple of short hikes, one to a giant sitka spruce that’s estimated to be over 500 years old. Zelda works well in the woods, especially after working up a bit of a sweat. Heard some coyotes yipping and howling the other night, which made poor T-Rex shiver and dive under the covers. Still wafting Zelda and The big plan for today is rolling over and going back to sleep????????

Quite sure she already caught wind of them and that’s probably why she didn’t want to go out. I’m parked on the border of the Siuslaw National Forest, so there are many in this area.

I am trying Arielle Shoshana today compliments of a generous NSTer and it is lovely. I saw people rave about it but typically fruit isn’t that interesting to me. But this is sophisticated fruit! ????

Congratulations on dodging that bullet She-ra! Still so stressful… Thank goodness there is perfume to keep us grounded.

I just love our Arielle Shoshana. it makes me smile even when I just smell the sprayer, and I am not a fruity perfume lover – maybe because there are so many low quality fruity perfumes? At this time, I’m thinking I’m not even “into” certain notes – I’m just into the perfume I like.

Mugler’s Oriental Express today – persistently 1/4 of a step less cozy than I’d like, but I keep trying it to be sure. It’s very iris-ey on me with the vanilla a dim, dim second.

Sticking with the 2016 Woodfest project again today, and wearing L’Artisan’s 60 Mirabilis from the Natura Fabularis line. I find it mostly a woody musk with a slight incense vibe (I could swear I pick up palo santo in it).

I did get a bit more information about the status of the Natura Fabularis line from Andrea at Luckyscent. They have disappeared off the L’A website, and are not being restocked at retailers once they sell out, while the bottles are being tweaked. It’s not entirely clear if the bottles will transition over to the traditional L’A octagonal bottle design, or if they will stay in the cylindrical black bottles, but without the bee. It would be great to see the price come down a bit to match the price of the regular line, but that might be wishful thinking. It will be interesting to see if any of the gold bee bottles show up at the discounters (more wishful thinking!); I have to admit that I find them pretty 😀

I am wearing Bee’s Bliss by SSS for May-bee Friday 5/2017. Wear a perfume with a honey note. This scent puts a smile on my face. Laurie Erickson said that she wanted to create a joyful perfume and I think that she succeeded.

I so want to order a sample of this from Laurie, because I love honey scents (and her perfumes in general), but am fearful of the mimosa note, as it never fails to be horrid to me. Do you find the mimosa prominent/heavy in Bee’s Bliss?

I’m not a huge fan of mimosa either. I don’t find it to be a prominent note but my nose isn’t super sensitive due to year round allergies. I would appreciate if someone else would chime in.

I woke up this morning with the song ‘Blue Velvet” in my head. So I tried to match a perfume to Isabella Rossellini character in the movie Blue Velvet. I came up with Superstitious. A little glamorous, a little crazy. I think this is one of my new favorite perfumes , that I’ve sampled in a long time. I was reading some reviews on Fragrantica, and realized I don’t really smell it the way others seem to. I think I tend to smell perfume as a feeling first, and then, eventually the notes.

I’m having perfume malaise. Weather is gray and rainy and I am grumpy. I don’t want anything I have. I don’t want fruit or sweet or floral or amber. Boo Hoo Poor Me. Not like me as I usually try to stay positive. I’m bummed out that I’ve now finished my week of bingeing in Man in the High Castle on Amazon video. Every night it provided such an adrenaline rush! Well I guess this too shall pass. Maybe I can find a nice non-sweet incense or something. Just dug out my bottle of Jaisalmer from the cabinet but the sprayer is stuck–that’s the 2nd one of those CDG cans that has happened to. I won’t buy them any more.

Hello, everyone. Tired, hot and late. I overslept! Me! It was fully six o’clock before I cracked an eyelid, and the kittens were protesting outside our bedroom door, holding little banners saying, “Waterdragon cruelty to kittens!” and other slogans. Eric led the march. Titus raced around getting in everyone’s way. Alexander looked wise and thin. I swear that kitten can suck his tummy in so that his stripes merge. I should learn his trick.

Still not in the project, except by hazy memory. SOTD is the beautiful, mis-named (or at least, mis-marketed) Fate, all golden and gorgeous, not dark and portentous. I think there was a project once for perfumes with misleading names, but if not, no matter. I smell of light and sun and new things, and that is good today. Must dash madly about now and accomplish STUFF. Be well, all.

Wearing CdG Vogue, and enjoying it way more than expected. On me, it is a very wearable lily of the valley but not too boring; I can definitely detect, but wish there was a bit more of the edgy/CdG effect there (film, ink, leather?). That would have been tempting; but, at least, I will finish the sample of this one, which is already a lot.

    SotD = Vetiver 46

Fragrance is absolutely for everyone and anyone who wants to wear it, but this scent really says “men’s aftershave” to me. Le Labo certainly knows how to do a beautiful bergamot top note.

Last August we had a vetiver Friday community project. I remember wearing Onda EdP from a sample. I liked that one better than Vetiver 46, which I think may be giving me a headache. Oh, well, more for someone else. 🙂

Dear friends, the theme I’ve reprised today is not a fragrant one: it is that of forgetting to bring clothes to wear post-workout. I have an excuse this time! The fire alarm went off as I was getting ready to head out, so I forgot my Apple Watch (which has become important to me because if I don’t record my workouts, did they even happen?) and, more vitally, ALL MY CLOTHES. I was wearing gym clothes, because I’ve started doing some weight training before going on my usual swim, and so, after my post-swim shower, I had to put on my sweaty gym clothes again 🙁

So my SOTD is kind of a jumble: sweat from my gym clothes, gardenia from my body oil (side note: I received this oil as a present, and it’s a very sparkly, very gardenia-y oil in a l’Occitane bottle, but I can find no record of a shimmering l’Occitane gardenia oil, and there are no stickers on the bottle–so where is this even from?!?!), and Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche, which is much prettier by itself than layered over all these other scents/stenches. Sigh.

Wearing Bois d’Armenie, and that seems to fit a number of projects from 2017 alone – I’m taking the approach of chosing the perfume, then seeing what might apply 🙂

It’s a lemming I read about here, it’s French, and it’s a variation on the fugly bottle. It looks nice, but the bulb makes it almost impossible to the perfume on to one’s skin!

You smell fantastic. I love Arbole Arbole in cold temperatures. It really shines!

Sample of Clive Christian 1872 Woman. Pleasant enough but for me not worth the big bucks.

I’ve only retried two Clive Christian but neither seemed worth it to me…

Still doing Forgotten Friends. Today was Parure. It had been a long time since I wore this, but I still love it just as much. It is not so much that I had forgotten it, but that I am trying to make it last, since I can’t buy it any more.

SOTD = Chanel Allure Pour Homme Edition Blanche EDP

Not the original but no harm done with this one. Leans masculine but equally wearable by all genders, office friendly, appropriate year round! Citrus, vetiver, sandalwood, vanilla – very well done!

    Commuting Woes No. 403:
Everyone who has ever commuted knows to check the seat before sitting down to avoid being contaminated by unknown substances. Today, I was first to get inside a train car and the first attractive seat actually had what looked like a dime-sized splat of something so I sat down on the next seat. I must have hesitated 2 seconds too long and the person behind me rolled her eyeballs and plopped herself (she was round-shaped which is my nice way of describing her) down on the first seat. If I was feeling combative, i would have told her that instead of rolling her eyeballs at me, she should have checked the seat because she just sat on (bird poop, barbecue sauce, someone’s snot, etc).
