The daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 13 December 2017 8 Comments

I know, some of you are sick of iso e super. I'm not, yet, so this one is mostly for my own (theoretical) enjoyment: Iso E Super bar soap from Monsillage. "The molecule Iso E Super was discovered in 1975 by chemists working at IFF. It evokes a light cedar note that is soft and fleeting, yet mesmerizing. It has fast become a staple ingredient in every perfumer's organ because of its great versatility and its ability to create beautiful sillage." $12 for 94g at Twisted Lily.

I just finished up Monsillage’s Chypre soap. The scent was great, and the formula wasn’t bad. I wish it had been a little more moisturizing and had lathered up easier.

D.S. & Durga have just released an iso e super soap, so it seems to be a bit of a trend.

      Thanks for the report!

I saw the DS & Durga one! It does have a better name (Iso E Soaper) and it’s made by Wary Meyers, which might be a plus if you’re willing to spend more ($20).

Sorry for being fussy, but the green decoration is something like thuja or cypress, the smell of which has not much to do with cedar of iso e super… ;) oh, those clueless marketing people…

If it were a cedar soap I’d join you in being fussy, but since it’s for a synthetic chemical anyway I don’t mind at all.

LOL at “evoking a light cedar note that is soft and fleeting.” More like sharp, ice-picky and unrelenting!

Thank you for representing the “no iso e super” contingent ;-)

I adore Iso E and am allways baffled by people who find it harsh and abrasive. Maybe Luca Turin was right when he said woody ambers, which Iso E Super qualifies as, don’t have a fixed odor strength and that our brain in some way has to be trained to smell them. So something that we initially find very weak-smelling with subsequent exposure ends up smelling frightfully strong.

The first time I tried on Molecule 01 in a store I sprayed with abandon, because I couldn’t smell it. A few minutes later a shop assistant came up and said “oh, you tried on Molecule 01! Isn’t it amazing?”

And I couldn’t detect it at all!

I adore it too, although I often don’t realize that it’s the reason I like a scent until I shower, because everything else washes off but the iso e super lingers and then I “recognize” it.
