Thursday scent of the day 11/16

Posted by Robin on 16 November 2017 241 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also  the International Day for Tolerance. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Ruth Mastenbroek Oxford. (It does not really remind me of cigarette smoke at all.)

Reminder: 11/17 will be Dealer's Choice: propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme. (Another repeat — we did this in 2015.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I am not a fan of the new eau de parfum from the Les Exclusifs! The only one that I seem to like is Coromandel. The others has lost they magic, sadly :(
My edt is from the Les Exclusifs when they first came around, o it’s about 10 years old or something..but still smells heavenly potent :D

Is asking a stranger about their scent always perceived as flirtation?

Browsing shirts I smell a huge cloud of? Citrus? Hedione ? Ambroxan? Acqua di Gio ?
Me- are you wearing Acqua di Gio ? (It would have perplexed me all day if I hadn’t asked)

Dior Sauvage , yes I’ve smelled that I was mistaken about ADG.
Glad I asked, I would have thought about it all day.

          Perhaps more dangerous. :)

But mainly I was thinking of how seductive, outrageous, or not, the perfume might have been. Black Cashmere isn’t over the top, but perhaps sweeter than guys usually wear. Definitely not the usual (and horrible) “sport” fragrance.

I would think it should never be perceived as flirtation, unless the question was delivered in an overtly flirtatious manner, and I’m sure it was not. Also, most guys I know hate to shop. They don’t enjoy browsing….they want to get what they need quickly and skedaddle.

Wearing a hint of Lumiere Blanche from last night, that is eclipsed by the scent of the Cire Trudon Etoile candle.

This might be one my favorite candles ever. It’s primarily aldehydes, rose and cedar to my nose and reminds me of Chanel No 5 and FM Superstitious.

It is keeping me sane while babysitting a 12week old rambunctious puppy and trying to work. (Of course very little work is being done.)

I’m in Alahiiiiiine today, and feeling relieved. I’ve been avoiding wearing it lately because when I uncap the bottle it has been smelling sharp somehow. On skin it isn’t sharp at all, and I should have remembered that. It’s perfect for another cold, rainy day today.

Oh, you know I love my Alahiiiiine. But sometimes when I haven’t worn it in a while, the first couple of spritzes smell awful. THen I clear whatever was in the spray tube out, and it’s fine.

Day #4 of Vanilla Week in Atelier’s Vanilla Insensee from yet another Atelier sample (my house is littered with Atelier samples due to my Sephora addiction). If I wind up purchasing a vanilla it will probably be this one – the drydown is a little boring, but it’s nice and dry and I’ve found that it layers well with amber and incense scents. Plus I always get compliments on it!

Happy Thursday! Hope my fellow cooks out there are ready for next Thursday . . .

As delicious as the duchesse may turn out, someone is going to say, I was really looking for the mashed potatoes.

You can’t put gravy on the duchesse! Thanksgiving turkey is simply a means of making gravy and dressing, and mashed potatoes are simply a vehicle for eating gravy. :)

They’re sort of like a twice-baked potato casserole – you boil and mash the potatoes, then mix them with egg yolks, sour cream, sometimes cheese, and bake them. You can make them a day ahead, which is why I am tempted to make them.

The duchesse potatoes sound wonderful. But that’s coming from someone who is pretty indifferent to mashed. Sacrilege, I know. I originally has roasted potatoes in the menu for my wedding buffet, but my husband-to-be made a very strong appeal for mashed. They were a hit.

I’m all about the stuffing. And the gravy.

I found a recipe for miso green beans and that should satisfy my need to make something different (green beans with miso butter – you can get the recipe on Bon Appetit’s site if you’re interested. I also use their duchesse potato recipe with a few alterations). Hope everyone else is enjoying their planning!

Wearing Gabriella Chieffo Lye today, for that super clean iris vibe of freshly laundered bed sheets.

A theme for this fragrance could be “keeping it clean, wear your most clean fragrance”

A few good blasts of Habanita. A new bottle, and therefore not the skankfest it used to be, but still powdery-ambery and not at all modern. It’s just great (if you like powder).

I was cleaning out a closet yesterday and finally found the oud extract that I bought in the old souq in Yemen in 1990. I had some oud wood, too, but couldn’t figure out how to use it in those pre-internet days and didn’t keep it. I don’t know how real the oil is. It smells good, which makes me suspicious that it isn’t real — all of the purportedly real oud perfumes I’ve smelled are unpleasant, at least at first. It’s brown, very viscous, and very concentrated.

I’ve posted this old article on oud before, but not everyone reads every day, so here goes:

Morning! You’ve probably seen this Scent from Heaven documentary but just in case. The oud expert/ dealer in the documentary has his own website and sells various oud oils. I have forgotten his name off the top of my head .think my favourite oud is the L’artisan Al Oudh.

I really like that coffret! They do seem a bit “cool” for perfumes, and yet I enjoy wearing them. That’s partly because I don’t like scenting the whole room with candles or room sprays.

They really last on fabric, though, so take care in application.

Apsara, D600 does not get powdery at all on me. It is a soft, sweet, smokey iris scent. The notes are very well balanced and that is what I love the most. It is almost gourmand, but it does not really fall in that category. There is a nice hint of chocolate, but very light and I do not get it all the time.
I know some people find it powdery, but that is not my case.

Something happened to my love for this one and I think it has to do with some travel I did this summer, and maybe associations with spending a lot of time in a rental car. Sad about this, but I’m still wearing it and I do like it, just not the same way.

I pretty much failed my own theme this morning lol. Decided to keep with what I’ve done on other days and match a perfume to my outfit. Since I chose a red shirt I wanted to wear a perfume that reminded me of fire. I then wanted to see if any decants in one of my more recent batches of purchasing would work. I dabbed on a bit of Puredistance Sheiduna on my upper arm because I remember being underwhelmed after a bunch of people in a FB group raved. Ok still underwhelmed, but now I needed to figure out which perfume it strongly reminded me of… seemed like something I already own. It hit me that it’s Barbara Bui! Well of course I had to do a comparison, so I ended up wearing BB today. Not fiery in the least! And there is a bit more spiciness and citrus to Sheiduna, but I still find the two quite similar.

If anyone is interested in swapping for this decant of Sheiduna, let me know at gee male (email is same as my user name). Robin, I hope it’s ok to post this.

Just yesterday, I was listening to a British podcast that referred to Gitanes in a way that made them sound like cigarettes. I’m very pleased that they were not making WWII/Nazi references by discussing the smoking of gypsies.

I have missed you, NST! I am no less busy today than I have been for the past while, but I would like to take some time out of my morning to tell you about how my day has gone so far (and it’s not even 10 yet).

My shoulder has been hurting for the past few days, so I haven’t gone swimming, but I thought I’d try it out this morning. When I got to the gym, I realized I had forgotten my flip flops, which means I would have to walk around the pool barefoot. No matter (stay away, foot fungus!!); I got in the pool, where I discovered that my goggles have really decided they don’t feel like keeping a seal with my face at all anymore. After a couple laps, I realized my shoulder is still in horrible shape. Moreover, a man in A DIFFERENT LANE kicked me thrice PAST the lane divider.

Then I got out of the pool and started gathering my things for a shower, whereupon I realized that, because I had been wearing a swimsuit under my clothes on the way to the gym, I had forgotten my underwear. Soooo now I’m commando. Not perfume-commando (more on that soon), real commando. Luckily, I am wearing leggings-as-pants. I used plastic wet-clothes bags as impromptu flip flops in the shower, and found that I was also out of conditioner, which kpaint insists is vital after a swim to keep one’s hair from turning into straw.

And finally, I pulled out the travel spray I had brought with me to perfume myself post-swim: Tauer l’Eau d’Epices. This is a scent my friend once described as “a port-a-potty during Christmas.” Undeterred, I decided to blind-swap for it anyway. I mean, l’eau d’epices?? What a great name for what was surely a great scent. Alas, my friend was right, so I now smell like a stale toilet with potpourri in it. Let my theme today be “worst scent you’ve ever smelled from one of your favorite houses.”

Ok, I’ve prattled on for long enough. Fun morning, eh? To top it off, it is raining barrels out there, which means I had to drive in the rain. Everyone knows Californians don’t know how to drive in the rain.

Here’s hoping my day’s experiments don’t go like my day’s workout!

It’s not so bad, actually! I’ve gotten quite used to it! But this has convinced me that I need to keep spare undies at work (and maybe socks?) (I already started stocking a spare bra at work after one of my bra straps broke off one day months ago; I spent half the day with INCREDIBLY, horrifically lopsided boobs, and it was funny, if mortifying, to watch the guys on my team try to keep their gazes fixed on my face).

What a wild ride you’ve had today – surely you’ve met your Bizarre Quota for the rest of the year! And “Everyone knows Californians don’t know how to drive in the rain” cracked me up. I lived in LA for a couple of years and LOVED when it rained because everyone else on the roads completely freaked out and actually slowed down to a (sub)reasonable speed. The rest of the time I was terrified of the LA freeways, but since I’m an Oregonian, driving in the wet is second nature.

So true. I would not drive on the freeway when it rained in LA. My mother grew up in LA and NEVER drove a freeway in her life.

Ahahaha. Traffic on the 65 mph highways had slowed to ~50 mph (vs. normal speeds of 70 – 80). Part of me was a bit impatient, but the other part of me was relieved, since I couldn’t see that far ahead anyway.

Hahaha Elisa, your memory is too good!!!!! Yes, the first time I went swimming at the gym (instead of at my apartment complex), I forgot a shirt!!! I had to wear a sweatshirt until a friend of mine, who was coming to work late, could bring me a spare shirt :) …Actually that reminds me; I’m not positive I ever gave her that shirt back. Oof.

Anyway, I haven’t forgotten a shirt since (and anyway, I now stock a spare shirt in lab). Hopefully, this means I won’t ever forget underwear again, either!

Update 1: Going commando in leggings isn’t so bad. The leggings are very opaque, luckily :) and my top is quite long anyway. Most of the time, I don’t even remember it. However, every time I go to the bathroom, I am unpleasantly surprised by having only one thing to pull down.

Update 2: Tauer l’Eau d’Epices has vanished (hoorayyyy scent-eating skin!), and I have given myself multiple sprays of the exquisite Hermes Ambre Narguile. Many thanks to the people who swapped me for those 4-mL mfr samples!

Yes, it’s in! I asked about it at Clinique in the fall, and a lovely older SA pulled out a pencil and a little notebook and put my name and number in it and said she would call me when it’s in – now I know it’s in because I’ve walked by the counter and have seen it, but I am still waiting for my phone call :)

Terre d’Hermès, I think its the Eau fraiche flanker (white cap, a friend donated me his bottle with 1 ml left in it, he knows I like testing new fragrances). Its okay but not memorable. I prefer the ‘regular’ Terre.
And now I crave something more intense….

I loved Terre until one day, I was sitting on a plane and next to me sat a finely dressed gentleman who must have spritzed himself like twenty times with Terre, because I almost suffocated, I mean, I love perfume, but this was just too much. The flight was short, luckily. After that I donated by bottle to my brother.

My theme is immediate sample love, leading to FB but rarely wear. Tolu! And lots of it! I think i also rarely wear it because it goes with the theme of significant other not loving it. It’s just not his taste. I’ve put my gorgeous bottle on my dresser, so I hope to wear it more often this winter.

My husband went on a business trip last week and got sick from the flight and then passed it on to me. Unfortunately, I got hit much harder than he did. So fortunate to work a job where taking sick time isn’t an issue. Haven’t worn any perfume since Saturday. Continuing on my sample mission. Wearing Juliette Has a Gun Another Oud. Luckily before I got sick I was able to hit Barney’s and get a sample of Frederic Malle The Promise. I like it, and think you most likely will enjoy it if you like Guerlain Rose Nacree. If you don’t like that Middle Eastern style sharpness it may be a pass. I get Rose, pink pepper, and a interesting note of green apple on the opening.

Love at first sniff: today’s perfume is Mojave Ghost. I tried my sample, thought “Mmmm! So that’s what alien shampoo smells like!”, realized that I had an interplanetary shampoo hole in my collection, and promptly spent my Christmas amazon gift cards to get a bottle.

Dealer’s choice theme for today: “Giving credit where credit is due”. I originally wanted to call it “Blame it on Bear”, but that sounded a little harsh for someone who has only sponsored a few of my lemmings. I don’t think that is exactly blame-worthy.

SOTD = Amouage Lyric Woman, from the sample stash. I had to grab a sample of this after Bear’s description of it earlier this fall. Liking it quite a bit, and it suits the weather where I am at today.

Late today. Very busy work day which is actually unusual. I usually have pockets of down time. Anyway, I wore a few drops of no 5 oil which I’m sort of hoarding, topped off with a few dabs of no 5 edp (current formulation)
Theme: From Hate it to It’s in my Top 5, or Voted Back onto the Island
Seriously can’t remember why I hated this stuff. Though, I’ve tried several vintage versions and I don’t like the vintage, still.

      Great theme idea!

So you don’t find number no 5 too much for work? I guess it’s a question of how much you put on, right? It seems like a “fancy” perfume to me. I like it, but I’ll have to revisit it with an attempt at “fresh eyes”, hard to do with such an iconic perfume.

Late again. Can’t wait ’til after tomorrow because I have the entire next week off!

It was raining this morning and I originally wanted to wear JM Blackberry and Bay but I was not feeling it. Then Hiram Greene Voyage jumped into my hands but boo hiss I completely forgot that the bottle to which I decanted it has a wonky sprayer so all I got was a spit. Vanille 44 to the rescue and very appropriate for a rainy day. I believe missionista wore it earlier in the week when it rained. The theme could be “Rainy Day Friday perfume”.
