Happy Almost-Friday! It's World Freedom Day and Chaos Never Dies Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Diptyque Volutes (because Missionista mentioned it yesterday). My overly literal song match: Dinah Washington singing Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (because Amy mentioned The Queen of the Blues yesterday).
Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Song: Leo Delibes Flower Duet (Dôme épais le jasmin) from Lakmé. I have layered several perfumes to achieve the scent I feel goes with this piece: Dilmun with its fresh white flowers as the main scent, one spritz of Joy to emphasize jasmine and rose and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil to add lotus and that pond/river smell.
The link to youtube – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMVFXfoaS3w
And here are the lyrics that inspired my choices (translated from French, translation copied from Wikipedia):
Thick dome of jasmine
Under the dense canopy where the white jasmine,
Blends with the rose,
That blends with the rose,
Bank in bloom, fresh morning,
On the flowering bank, laughing in the morning,
Call us together.
Come, let us drift down together.
To the pond where joyfully play
The snow-winged swans
Let us pick blue lotuses.
Such a beautiful piece of music! The 80s movie “The Hunger” with David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine Deneuve featured the song. It was quite a scandalous movie at the time, how times have changed!
Oh, I did not know that. Thanks! I only knew that (adapted version of) Flower Duet was used in British Airways ads.
I love that music and the film. I saw The Hunger when it first came out, and have watched it a few times since, but not for a while.
No time to think much about matching perfumes and songs, so I went with a very easy one: Prada Purple Rain for Prince Purple Rain. Both perfume and song beautiful. A big fan of Prince here! Have a great day everyone!
You have a great day too! Does your work ever get less hectic?
Not really! We are always very busy :-x. 🙁 But at least I have been working my regular hours this week. Looking forward to the holiday off tomorrow 🙂
Did anyone like Prince’s actual perfume, the one with the number for a name, that ended up in multiple lawsuits? I never got to try it.
3121 smelled of jasmine and musk, with low quality ingredients used.
Being a Prince fan, I would have probably bought it had the bottle been purple glass, but the juice was just a pale aubergine, the glass, clear.
????
Nope. Awful. Could have been nice with better raw materials, but clearly no flowers were harmed in the making of it. (I paid $8 for an ounce, though, so I suppose I can’t complain too much.)
“No flowers were harmed in the making of this perfume.” Good one! 🙂
Playing along today. Pairing Procol Harum’s A Whiter Shade of Pale with Narciso EDP. (Or white cube, as I like to call it.????)
Dang…. Perfect!
+1
Thanks!
Very nice combo! I like Annie Lennox’s version of the song, too.
Thank you! Ooh, yes, great song!
I love both versions and I am also paired with Annie Lenox today

And decided to match with Zoologist Civet. 🙂
Lol at that video! Not what I was expecting at all!
I hope Victor Wong of Zoologist will forgive me someday 🙂
We are looking at a cold dreary, wintery mix day. Sotd is Cristalle, matched with The Fifth Dimension “let the Sunshine in”. Song and scent really perk me up. Your kids might like this song LTSG.
Nice match!
Great matching. Cristelle is one of the few Chanels I cannot wear – it turns screechy on me almost at once
Awesome song!
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
All of us under its spell.
We know that it’s probably magic..
SOTD:Petit Guerlain
Oh, that’s a happy memory for me. 🙂 I love the Muppet Movie.
Sweet! I love that song and can play it on the ukulele ????
Oh, I love that song so much! Thanks for putting it in my head.
Its a good ear worm
I do love Sarah Mclaughlin’s remake of this song as well
Wearing vintage Vivienne Westwood Boudoir Boudoir

I pity the fool that tries to bring you down, Bear. ☺
An ocean of tears, except even our tears are contaminated with a large variety of chemicals now….
Paula Abdul killed it back in the day! I’ll pretend I didn’t spend hours trying to not only copy her dancing (fail) and hairstyle (win!).
Ha! Excellent.
2 great song picks today, Bear! You are in rare form.
FM Perfume Therese today for no particular reason. No matching song as I am an NPR junkie and am not up on music much at all.
You smell great! You could match it to your favorite NPR show 🙂
I’m not doing songs right now either – I’m writing, so listening (halfway, in the back of my mind) to the instrumental Deep Focus playlist on Spotify.
However, I found a recipe for a homemade Gingerbread Latte, so I’m wearing PdN Vanille Tonka to go with that. Also, I think I’m tryin’ to get sick (Appalachian phrase for “I feel illness coming on and I’m fighting it”), so I’m gonna curl up with my afghan and more decaf gingerbread lattes.

How’s bookworm getting on with her new job? Hope she’s settling in.
So far, it’s been good — thanks for asking. She was excited to find that she has her own desk, her own laptop, and her own lab coat. I think she was expecting to be the same kind of lab drudge as when she did her undergraduate internship, so it’s been a pleasant surprise for her.
So nice, good for her!
Glad to hear your daughter is happy in her new job, hope you don’t get too sick!
Fingers crossed that you fight off the crud.
I woke up this morning with two awesome ideas for a scent-song pairing haha
1.
Fracas, Piguet “its got to be big” tori amos, Professional widow (the armand van helden remix)
2
Poison, Dior – Der Hölle Rache, WA Mozart in Die Zauberflöte
….but I had to go to a convention, so I decided to keep it polite and put on a few dabs of Dark Horse.
Song: The Dancer, by PJ Harvey
This is a fun project!
So glad you like it! It is not universally popular, I know.
Beck’s “Devil’s Haircut” with Mugler Suprafloral, a mean-green hyacinth. Don’t ask me how I got that combo, it’s been a weird day!
And now that song will be stuck in my head all day 😉
It’s a real earworm, isn’t it? Yikes!
I agree that “Devil’s Haircut” is a serious earworm!
SOTD is Chanel 19, for a day when chaos definitely is NOT ending at my job and where I am probably going to have to do something about it today (not my greatest skill). Grr.
Good luck! Hope it calms down for you.
That’s the perfect scent for that sort of day. Remember the tag line from the No 19 advertising campaign? “There is only one thing worse in the world than being vulnerable. And that is not being vulnerable.”
I find that when there is chaos to take charge of, that saying (and Chanel 19) really helps me. Best of luck to you!
You smell great in 19. Hoping it gives you strength!
Good luck. I hope the day ends with far less chaos!
If it’s any consolation, you smelled great today in the midst of chaos.
Amouage Gold, a symphonic floral calls for a symphonic association, and in my case it’s Mozart’s 40 th. Both are stunningly layered.
Perfect
Perfect.

A gorgeous interpretation by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Harnoncourt.
In Cuir de Lancome, listening to kd lang’s Constant Craving.
Great scent and great song.
Oh yes, on both counts.
Great pairing! I love that song!
Song cousin! kd lang is part of my song today. I love her so much.
I’m in Smell Bent November.
I hope it smells better than our weather 🙂
She sent him scented letters,
And he recieved them with a strange delight,
Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful,
She signed the letter
All yours baboushka, baboushka, baboushka-ya-ya!
I’m pairing Kate Bush’s Baboushka with Chanel vintage Coco edp
I’m loving this challenge!
Such beautiful heartbreaking lyrics to match an exquisite fragrance. Wonderful!
Thanks lillyjo!
Wow. Blast from the past. Kate Bush. Made me put on The Man with the Child in His Eyes….
Yay for Kate Bush. Imho she really is one of the greatest artists/songwriters ever! So sad I missed her live performances a few years ago. 🙁 It probably was a once in a lifetime oppprtunity.
I have been on a Bob Marley kick and so I am listening to Jamming and wearing Dior Feve Delicieuse. I think they go together because Feve is warm, relaxed, serene and uplifting.
Happy Thursday, everyone!
If Feve reminds you of Bob Marley/Jamming then I have to try it! I always feel calm and grounded when I hear that particular song.
VCA Orchidee Vanille today which is a new acquisition.
It is lovely…wish it were a bit stronger but I will spray more next time not unlike a startled skunk. 😉
I owe you an email but running behind! I won’t forget…
Take your time…plenty of perfume to keep me occupado. 😉
This beauty has persisted all day and is still going strong over 10 hrs. later.

Jubiliation 25 + Barbara Hendricks Mozart Great Mass in C minor, Et incarnatus est = bliss
Such an interesting pairing. I’ve just found the Arleen Auger version as well. Beautiful music!
Received lab results yesterday, and I am bummed by my super high cholesterol numbers, and the recommendation to immediately start on statins. Would rather go Mediterranean, kick up the exercise routine, and reduce coffee intake. Any of you out there with cholesterol issues?
Planning to wear something light and cheery today – maybe a Hermes, or one of the 4711 colognes. Going with Bear on the song front – Don’t Bring Me Down – but will apparently have to pass on the Fritos and dip.
My cholesterol is borderline high (above the numbers that they like). It has actually increased dramatically in the last 15 months, during a period of very high stress. We’re watchfully waiting.
Mine is high but I can get it down with the proper diet (ie: no sweets and fats which I love)…but my ratio has always been good and my good cholesterol high so no doctor has ever recommended meds for me.
Why don’t you see first if you can lower it with diet and exercise?
I’ve got sufficient discipline to avoid regular sweets (though I do have a dream of one day doing a pastry tour of Austria); it’s the fat that I really enjoy – butter, cream, cheese, marbled beef, pork shoulder. Yeah. I could definitely make some changes…..
Hi Lisa,
I recently started on statins for my creeping cholesterol too. It’s like a switch was tripped when I hit 50, as my blood pressure also went up. My doc says it’s down to my family medical history as I keep to a pretty good diet, exercise regularly and am only slightly overweight ????. Don’t like the statins at all as I’m noticing some unexplained joint and muscle aches that I never had before so just giving you the heads up that it might happen. I’m going to change my statin to another type to see if it improves.
Yep, my switch was tripped as well. I’ve already got joint aches in hands and knees, so I’m a little worried about statin use in that regard. I would also like to avoid being on medication, if a lifestyle change could address the issue, instead.
No words of wisdom, other than I suggest exercise and food changes before medication, which I see as a lifelong commitment.
Good luck!
If I HAD TO restrict coffee, I don’t think it would be pleasant.
????
I view the medication in the same way – as a lifelong commitment that I would rather avoid, if I could.
Oh, Bear. The coffee.
Coffee! Does coffee intake increase cholesterol?! How/why??
I brought my levels down from 330 to 230 (still high – but so much better!) by focusing on getting lots of soluble fiber. I have a family history of high cholesterol, and my liver seems to produce it, even when there is very little of it in my diet. So I have to focus on what gets cholesterol out of the body – soluble fiber. You’ll find it in chia seeds, oatmeal, barley, apples, pears, and other sources.
Making lentils for dinner!
My husband’s is high. He is in really great shape, eats well, but does have family history. We see a naturopathic doctor and her main recommendation was: reduce stress!! As jirish mentioned, he has also been working on increasing fiber.
No advice to give, but wishing you the best of luck in dealing with this.
I don’t chime in very often, but wanted to share this: what the medics omit/forget/don’t tell you is that if you get joint aches with statins (as well as trying another brand) for many people, taking the supplement co-enzyme Q10 (CQ 10) can get rid of them. I’ve been taking both so long, I’ve forgotten how it works to get rid of the aches but it does. (I had to start statins 10 years ago due to inherited heart and cholesterol issues). Hope that helps with a bit more information for your decision.
Wearing a spritz of Oliver Peoples today. As I was thinking of a song to pair this with, I thought of something called “The Julida Polka” that I learned to play way way back when I took accordion lessons – yes, really. My life is regaining some semblance of order this week for the first time in a long time. My mom finally got a bed in a nursing home so my sister and I don’t have to take turns staying with her, and the Grade3/4 class that were using the library as their classroom have finally moved into their Portable so I can run a decent library program for everyone. I am polka-ing around the library smelling great.
Double yay! Enjoy your day smelling great!
Oh wow, I’m so glad that so many things fell into place for you. I was thinking of Oliver Peoples today – the song that came to my head to pair it with was “The Sound of Sunshine” by Michael Franti and Spearhead.
I wish I could watch that polka!
Hurray for things looking up!
I’m wearing Adam Levine today (well, not literally- if I were I wouldn’t be posting on here ha!) and pairing it with Maroon 5 of course. This Love…
I was so high, I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye as she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart
lol!
Well I hope and I pray
That maybe some day
You’ll walk in the room
With my heart.
Divine “L’Homme de Coeur”.
You wouldn’t want to take those lyrics too literally though.
Arguably still better than the alternative…
ABC All of My Heart??? His gold lamé suits were awesome back in the day.
Lovely scent!
I’m wearing Rossy de Palma today. The song match is sort of bass-ackwards because I had the song in my mind first, and I was just trying to come up with a match for it. Anyway, the song is “Johnny Thunders Fantasy Space Camp” by Shilpa Ray. I like the song, but I also partially like it for the title.
Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP7_bNfUJ_c
I think I have done most of mine that way!
Yeah, I guess what I meant was that I just really wanted to use that song, so I just went through my collection and picked what I felt was the closest match, even if it’s not ideally what I think would fit. Like the match was more of a contrivance to use that song, I guess.
Really, I think the aesthetic would more fit something from Smell Bent or something like that, but I didn’t have anything.
Gotcha. Still better than my silly match today.
Perfume: La Parfumerie Moderne Belles Rives.
Music: Nouvelle Vague Dance With Me.
I still have to try this!
Toasty Dries van Noten for me today paired with Tori Amos’ Cornflake Girl because that’s what this smelled like to me this morning.
you smell wonderful!
Thanks!
I haven’t smelled Dries van Noten, but I like your song pick!
Thanks! Dries is great if you like the smell of almost burnt pastries and sandalwood.
I love that song, play it on repeat A LOT.
This is not, this is notta, really happenin’
You bet your life IT IS !!!!
;D
???? My play-on-repeat Tori song was Crucify.
Dame Perfumery Monsoon
Annie Lennox singing “here comes the rain again”
What do you think of Monsoon? I have a sample, on first try it wasn’t doing anything for me but I will try again.
I received it last night and of course had to try it…at first I was taken aback but it’s “oddness” (for lack of a better word)…but loved the drydown enough to go for it again today…it is very different from any of Jeff’s other offerings….it reminds me of something from my distant past perfume wearings but I don’t know what…and it has a very leatherish quality to it (although leather is not listed in the notes)…maybe it is the creasote? Nonetheless it is really growing on me…but out of the three new ones Earth Mother is still my favorite.
I tried Monsoon a few days ago for first time! It is a bit odd and synthetic to me but interesting. Dont know if Id wear it often, but it sure is worth trying.
It reminded me a bit of Fat electrician, they dont seem to share any notes and they probably smell very different when I try them next to each other, but I think its because they both have the same electricity/plastic thing going on. Need to try them both together with N d Bakélite.
I love your gravatar. Very peaceful!
Thank you. I decided this morning that it was time to put my fall leaves away. Those are Pacifica candles burning with an incense stick in my backyard…I took it a few years ago…back in the day when I would haul my butt out of bed in the wee hours of the morning and meditate outside..now I am too lazy-LOL!
I’m wearing Yesterday Haze to pair with one of my all-time favorite songs – “Crying” by Roy Orbison and kd lang.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmisOxCHEiw
Beautiful pairing. That song is haunting. Gives me chills every time I hear it.
I’ll put a serious perfume comment on here soon but meanwhile had to share this experience which I thought people here would “appreciate”…
I got an earful while standing in line at Kroger’s yesterday late in the afternoon. The guy behind me was talking on the phone quite loudly and saying “Yeah, I got a three-pack. No, boxers not briefs. I sweat a lot and it’s uncomfortable when things down there don’t have enough room to move around. You know, it really chafes down there when I work out.” At this point I decided to turn around and give him a serious, professorial eye roll. Didn’t phase him. He was kind of young-ish guy with a shaved head and big beard, motorcycle gang look. He just kept on about his sweating and work-outs and “pectorial “ muscles. Meanwhile the man in front of me had so many coupons he was taking forever, so I kept being subjected to one end of the conversation. He went on to complain about his “ex old lady.” Then when the poor checker wouldn’t give the man in front of me double coupons on something, he got furious and threw all his remaining coupons at him. Maybe Kroger’s can adopt some woman-only shopping hours? I told a friend and he said I should have turned around and told the guy “Well whatever you’re using down there now, it’s not working.”
Sounds like both of them should still be wearing diapers
Really awful!
Well I’m sorry for your horrible shopping experience, but this made me laugh out loud. Sounds like you were caught up in a bad hidden camera programme. Shopping makes me want to scream sometimes.
Those are the times when all you can say to yourself is, “this will make a good story someday.” And it did! Puts my grocery shopping irritation the other day to shame.
Hey hey hey! !!
As a human with similar genitalia to those two, I resemble that remark !!!!!
LOLOLOL
(Resemble instead of insulting by, a Three Stooged routine.)
You SHOULD have said, I don’t think you really need that much room. ????
LOLOLOL
????
????
*insultED
Thank you for my afternoon laugh!
????????????????????
Ha ha, I wish I’d been that quick with a reply!
Yikes, so sorry you had to be subjected to that. The worst part is you’re a captive audience. The nature of your side of the conversation reminded me of a conversation I (and a hundred other people in the same train car) heard from a woman talking about giving tongue to her girlfriend and biting. Someone finally told her to shut up to which she just reacted by getting louder.
Sometimes, there really isn’t anyone else on the other side of the conversation and it is all just posturing.
Cell phones, one of the modern world’s way of being an exhibitionist. No one wants to hear it!! Especially TMI stuff.
forgot to grab a sample from Scent Bar this morning so I wore a sample I had here at work. Still sample usage, but technically breaking my only Scent Bar samples crusade–sample is from Neiman Marcus. Edward Bess La Boheme. I found all three of the perfumes to be good quality and well-crafted.
A bit of JM Orange Blossom. Nice and cheerful, not overwhelming, as I continue to recover.
What a lingering illness, ugh. Hope the perfume picks you up.
This has been a really dire virus, normally I don’t get this sick. I was under a lot of stress, so my immune system was not up to par.
you smell lovely.
Sample of Twilly today. Don’t have a song though, unless “Jack Be Nimble” counts.
Twilly is growing on me. I’ve gone to a store twice to spray it, and the last time I did that was with Stash.
I’m wearing a sample of Jo Malone Mimosa & Cardamom. It’s a nice scent, but honestly it is so faint I have to cram my wrist to my nose to smell it. Song is “More, More, More” from the disco ’80’s because that’s what I’d like from the whole JM line. I am not her target customer at all…
Ha, nice ironic pick!
SOTD is Coromandel. Work has been insane lately so no song association in my head.
How about..She works hard for the money! 🙂
Perfect! I’m just going let other people match up my scents. Work stress has pushed all creativity out of my head! ????
I’m expecting a busy day today, so need something cheering, I’m thinking Iris Nobile, rich and flowery.
I don’t know if it’s a perfect pairing, but I’m wearing Rochas Femme and listening to Françoise Hardy’s Mon Amis Le Rose this morning.
That’s a lovely song and a wonderful perfume!
SOTD is Hermes Vetiver Tonka because it was handy and the rest of my perfumes were not. Also, dental appointment, so I didn’t want to fume out the entire dental office.
Happy almost Friday Day. ✌????
You smell great! Love VT.
Showered with my purchase from yesterday…Hinoki gel from Le Labo. So dry and woody, it was lovely.
Old Spice Amber deodorant and then the body spray. Here’s the ad copy, which is wonderful: Climb the tallest tree. Sail the widest ocean. Discover the heretofore undiscoverable. Why? Smellventure, my friend, smellventure. Bring the aromas of your far-off conquests home and then slather them all over your body. Amber scent captures a singular moment in the history of good-smellingness. This particular moment smells like blackberry, plum and amber.
I have to say, I am smelling good. I’m sure here’s some cheesy song out there to describe it, but what hit my brain and is now an ear worm is “I’m a lumberjack” from Monty Python….
It’s a smellventure, folks!
Good-smellingness vibrations to you!
Just got done with jury duty and now on the way home. I will do a practical tips for a potential juror comment sometime in the next few days.
Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I am heading to the mall to shop Sephora – 20% off!
SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage
Refined non-headshop patchouli ALL DAY today! I’m too lazy to associate with a song or being in a jury pool. Coincidentally, I saw a colleague in the jury pool today and gave him feedback regarding one of his employees.
Age of Aquarius
Maybe, for the throwback vibe:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oPK7ZF6jfJE
And by the way, I was a day too early for the 20% off. I am not a Rouge member (yet or never will be but I probably will end up being one due to some La Mer purchases I will be making).
I was wondering about that. I happen to be rouge this year but won’t be next year. Will be taking advantage tomorrow too!
Are you done done with jury duty now, or do you have to go in for another day?
Done for now – one day ir one trial and since I was not selected, being there counts as serving m. Technically, I wiukd not be called into jury dury over the next 3 years.
Yay for Dark Passage and yay for providing doubtlessly well-earned “feedback”! 😉
Thank YOU. And yes, the feedback, oh the feedback…
I’m with Petunia on work being too crazy today for me to do a proper song matching, but I’ll make it easy and pair the song I’ve had in my head since this morning. The song is Billy Joel It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me, and I’m wearing Masque Milano Tango.
Oh, that one is ear worm material!
Testing again from the sample stash, and making a dent in it! SOTD = Donna Karan Signature EdP. On me, it’s REALLY soapy. So the song to match is “Splish Splash” by Bobby Darin.
🙂
No song again to go with Serge Lutens ISM. Like others, it’s been a crazy busy week. Anyone have any matching tunes?
Instead, I’m matching the snowstorm outside. It was very treacherous to and from work. Sooo very glad to be home.
Something jazz instrumental, to me. Early Miles Davis?
Well I get a total “FAIL” on the project this week!! But I’m smelling good right now in Fate. It has finally cooled off enough to wear it, huzzah!!
You ARE smelling good! Yum!
I’m afraid I went the wrong way around today and wore a scent then found a song to go with it. (I promise to do it the right way round tomorrow.) I chose By Kilian Back to Black in a sample. Who knew what damage such a teeny sample could do. Not an awful scent but it STICKS TO YOU like glue, or, like HONEY. So now you’ll hate me for this ear worm, but it really does seem suitable–Abba, Honey Honey.
I don’t think it matters at all how you do it! But I reject your ear worm!! Ack.
