Thursday scent of the day 11/9

Posted by Robin on 9 November 2017 178 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! It's World Freedom Day and Chaos Never Dies Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque Volutes (because Missionista mentioned it yesterday). My overly literal song match: Dinah Washington singing Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (because Amy mentioned The Queen of the Blues yesterday).

Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again. If you want to see the first one, it's here.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Song: Leo Delibes Flower Duet (Dôme épais le jasmin) from Lakmé. I have layered several perfumes to achieve the scent I feel goes with this piece: Dilmun with its fresh white flowers as the main scent, one spritz of Joy to emphasize jasmine and rose and Un Jardin Sur Le Nil to add lotus and that pond/river smell.
The link to youtube – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMVFXfoaS3w
And here are the lyrics that inspired my choices (translated from French, translation copied from Wikipedia):

    Thick dome of jasmine
Under the dense canopy where the white jasmine,

    Blends with the rose,
    That blends with the rose,

    Bank in bloom, fresh morning,
On the flowering bank, laughing in the morning,

    Call us together.
Come, let us drift down together.

To the pond where joyfully play
    The snow-winged swans
    Let us pick blue lotuses.

Such a beautiful piece of music! The 80s movie “The Hunger” with David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine Deneuve featured the song. It was quite a scandalous movie at the time, how times have changed!

Oh, I did not know that. Thanks! I only knew that (adapted version of) Flower Duet was used in British Airways ads.

No time to think much about matching perfumes and songs, so I went with a very easy one: Prada Purple Rain for Prince Purple Rain. Both perfume and song beautiful. A big fan of Prince here! Have a great day everyone!

Did anyone like Prince’s actual perfume, the one with the number for a name, that ended up in multiple lawsuits? I never got to try it.

3121 smelled of jasmine and musk, with low quality ingredients used.
Being a Prince fan, I would have probably bought it had the bottle been purple glass, but the juice was just a pale aubergine, the glass, clear.

Nope. Awful. Could have been nice with better raw materials, but clearly no flowers were harmed in the making of it. (I paid $8 for an ounce, though, so I suppose I can’t complain too much.)

What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
All of us under its spell.
We know that it’s probably magic..

I’m not doing songs right now either – I’m writing, so listening (halfway, in the back of my mind) to the instrumental Deep Focus playlist on Spotify.

However, I found a recipe for a homemade Gingerbread Latte, so I’m wearing PdN Vanille Tonka to go with that. Also, I think I’m tryin’ to get sick (Appalachian phrase for “I feel illness coming on and I’m fighting it”), so I’m gonna curl up with my afghan and more decaf gingerbread lattes.

I woke up this morning with two awesome ideas for a scent-song pairing haha

    1.
Fracas, Piguet “its got to be big” tori amos, Professional widow (the armand van helden remix)
    2
Poison, Dior – Der Hölle Rache, WA Mozart in Die Zauberflöte

….but I had to go to a convention, so I decided to keep it polite and put on a few dabs of Dark Horse.
Song: The Dancer, by PJ Harvey

That’s the perfect scent for that sort of day. Remember the tag line from the No 19 advertising campaign? “There is only one thing worse in the world than being vulnerable. And that is not being vulnerable.”

I find that when there is chaos to take charge of, that saying (and Chanel 19) really helps me. Best of luck to you!

Received lab results yesterday, and I am bummed by my super high cholesterol numbers, and the recommendation to immediately start on statins. Would rather go Mediterranean, kick up the exercise routine, and reduce coffee intake. Any of you out there with cholesterol issues?

Planning to wear something light and cheery today – maybe a Hermes, or one of the 4711 colognes. Going with Bear on the song front – Don’t Bring Me Down – but will apparently have to pass on the Fritos and dip.

My cholesterol is borderline high (above the numbers that they like). It has actually increased dramatically in the last 15 months, during a period of very high stress. We’re watchfully waiting.

Mine is high but I can get it down with the proper diet (ie: no sweets and fats which I love)…but my ratio has always been good and my good cholesterol high so no doctor has ever recommended meds for me.

Why don’t you see first if you can lower it with diet and exercise?

I’ve got sufficient discipline to avoid regular sweets (though I do have a dream of one day doing a pastry tour of Austria); it’s the fat that I really enjoy – butter, cream, cheese, marbled beef, pork shoulder. Yeah. I could definitely make some changes…..

      Hi Lisa,
I recently started on statins for my creeping cholesterol too. It’s like a switch was tripped when I hit 50, as my blood pressure also went up. My doc says it’s down to my family medical history as I keep to a pretty good diet, exercise regularly and am only slightly overweight ????. Don’t like the statins at all as I’m noticing some unexplained joint and muscle aches that I never had before so just giving you the heads up that it might happen. I’m going to change my statin to another type to see if it improves.

Yep, my switch was tripped as well. I’ve already got joint aches in hands and knees, so I’m a little worried about statin use in that regard. I would also like to avoid being on medication, if a lifestyle change could address the issue, instead.

      Good luck!

I brought my levels down from 330 to 230 (still high – but so much better!) by focusing on getting lots of soluble fiber. I have a family history of high cholesterol, and my liver seems to produce it, even when there is very little of it in my diet. So I have to focus on what gets cholesterol out of the body – soluble fiber. You’ll find it in chia seeds, oatmeal, barley, apples, pears, and other sources.

My husband’s is high. He is in really great shape, eats well, but does have family history. We see a naturopathic doctor and her main recommendation was: reduce stress!! As jirish mentioned, he has also been working on increasing fiber.

I don’t chime in very often, but wanted to share this: what the medics omit/forget/don’t tell you is that if you get joint aches with statins (as well as trying another brand) for many people, taking the supplement co-enzyme Q10 (CQ 10) can get rid of them. I’ve been taking both so long, I’ve forgotten how it works to get rid of the aches but it does. (I had to start statins 10 years ago due to inherited heart and cholesterol issues). Hope that helps with a bit more information for your decision.

Wearing a spritz of Oliver Peoples today. As I was thinking of a song to pair this with, I thought of something called “The Julida Polka” that I learned to play way way back when I took accordion lessons – yes, really. My life is regaining some semblance of order this week for the first time in a long time. My mom finally got a bed in a nursing home so my sister and I don’t have to take turns staying with her, and the Grade3/4 class that were using the library as their classroom have finally moved into their Portable so I can run a decent library program for everyone. I am polka-ing around the library smelling great.

I wish I could watch that polka!

I was so high, I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye as she got on a plane
    Never to return again
    But always in my heart

I’m wearing Rossy de Palma today. The song match is sort of bass-ackwards because I had the song in my mind first, and I was just trying to come up with a match for it. Anyway, the song is “Johnny Thunders Fantasy Space Camp” by Shilpa Ray. I like the song, but I also partially like it for the title.

Yeah, I guess what I meant was that I just really wanted to use that song, so I just went through my collection and picked what I felt was the closest match, even if it’s not ideally what I think would fit. Like the match was more of a contrivance to use that song, I guess.

Really, I think the aesthetic would more fit something from Smell Bent or something like that, but I didn’t have anything.

I received it last night and of course had to try it…at first I was taken aback but it’s “oddness” (for lack of a better word)…but loved the drydown enough to go for it again today…it is very different from any of Jeff’s other offerings….it reminds me of something from my distant past perfume wearings but I don’t know what…and it has a very leatherish quality to it (although leather is not listed in the notes)…maybe it is the creasote? Nonetheless it is really growing on me…but out of the three new ones Earth Mother is still my favorite.

I tried Monsoon a few days ago for first time! It is a bit odd and synthetic to me but interesting. Dont know if Id wear it often, but it sure is worth trying.

It reminded me a bit of Fat electrician, they dont seem to share any notes and they probably smell very different when I try them next to each other, but I think its because they both have the same electricity/plastic thing going on. Need to try them both together with N d Bakélite.

I’ll put a serious perfume comment on here soon but meanwhile had to share this experience which I thought people here would “appreciate”…

I got an earful while standing in line at Kroger’s yesterday late in the afternoon. The guy behind me was talking on the phone quite loudly and saying “Yeah, I got a three-pack. No, boxers not briefs. I sweat a lot and it’s uncomfortable when things down there don’t have enough room to move around. You know, it really chafes down there when I work out.” At this point I decided to turn around and give him a serious, professorial eye roll. Didn’t phase him. He was kind of young-ish guy with a shaved head and big beard, motorcycle gang look. He just kept on about his sweating and work-outs and “pectorial “ muscles. Meanwhile the man in front of me had so many coupons he was taking forever, so I kept being subjected to one end of the conversation. He went on to complain about his “ex old lady.” Then when the poor checker wouldn’t give the man in front of me double coupons on something, he got furious and threw all his remaining coupons at him. Maybe Kroger’s can adopt some woman-only shopping hours? I told a friend and he said I should have turned around and told the guy “Well whatever you’re using down there now, it’s not working.”

Yikes, so sorry you had to be subjected to that. The worst part is you’re a captive audience. The nature of your side of the conversation reminded me of a conversation I (and a hundred other people in the same train car) heard from a woman talking about giving tongue to her girlfriend and biting. Someone finally told her to shut up to which she just reacted by getting louder.

Sometimes, there really isn’t anyone else on the other side of the conversation and it is all just posturing.

Showered with my purchase from yesterday…Hinoki gel from Le Labo. So dry and woody, it was lovely.

Old Spice Amber deodorant and then the body spray. Here’s the ad copy, which is wonderful: Climb the tallest tree. Sail the widest ocean. Discover the heretofore undiscoverable. Why? Smellventure, my friend, smellventure. Bring the aromas of your far-off conquests home and then slather them all over your body. Amber scent captures a singular moment in the history of good-smellingness. This particular moment smells like blackberry, plum and amber.

I have to say, I am smelling good. I’m sure here’s some cheesy song out there to describe it, but what hit my brain and is now an ear worm is “I’m a lumberjack” from Monty Python….

    It’s a smellventure, folks!

I’m afraid I went the wrong way around today and wore a scent then found a song to go with it. (I promise to do it the right way round tomorrow.) I chose By Kilian Back to Black in a sample. Who knew what damage such a teeny sample could do. Not an awful scent but it STICKS TO YOU like glue, or, like HONEY. So now you’ll hate me for this ear worm, but it really does seem suitable–Abba, Honey Honey.

I don’t think it matters at all how you do it! But I reject your ear worm!! Ack.
