Friday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2017 244 Comments

old spice

Happy Fougère Friday! Our community project for today: wear a fougère, if you have one.

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

Me: I decided to go old school, so I'm in vintage Old Spice. (Actually, I think it smells more like an oriental, but Classification des Parfums et Terminologie says it is a spicy fougère so that's good enough for me.)

Reminder: 11/10 will Playlist Friday...name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song. (Yes, I loved this project so much, we're doing it again.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Well I was more in a vetiver mood so it is the one by Dyptique for me today. I like the descriptions of fougères but am not sure what I had on hand that would qualify.

and Robin you are smelling great! Old Spice came out in 1937 and it was originally marketed for women…I consider it an oriental as well. I had a boss who wore it daily and I loved the way it smelled on him.

The old stuff is amazing. I have not smelled a new bottle in a long while.

You are smelling more fougere-ish than I am!

Oh wow, you have vintage…man, that is some good stuff!!!
Honestly, my skin is so weird, the Drakkar wears like a skin scent and smells oddly of a dark brooding lavenderesque vanilla…not getting fougere at all from this…I should have gone with my Field Notes…that smells like “barbershop” on my skin…in fact I wore it work once and someone said “Who smells like men’s shaving cream???”

My skin is weird then because I do not get shaving cream from Field Notes! (Now I’ll have to wear it this weekend and be sure that’s true.)

It smells completely different on a younger family member…she “made me” buy her a full bottle a few years ago and then left it at home. It is warm and tobacco-y on her skin.

            3 November 2017 at 4:27 pm

I get shaving cream (and dirty ashtrays) from Field Notes also. Totally wasn’t expecting that when I tried it.

That was my father’s after shave, I think, in the ’40s and ’50s. I never knew it was originally marketed for women.

One of my six housemates at college had a boyfriend on the baseball team who would sometimes come over and watch TV with us. I had no envy of Christine for dating Andrew, except when he was freshly sprayed with Drakkar Noir, because that was some amazing stuff. MMMM. (It doesn’t smell the same to me now, not at all. Sad.)

oh that is a great story, mals! I will confess that I stole some vintage Drakkar from Mr. CM8 this morning. He hasn’t worn this stuff in 20 years but did confess to me that the only reason he bought the bottle to begin with was that he overheard two young women discussing their reactions to it…apparently the same as yours 🙂

All the boys in my middle school bathed in Drakkar Noir. (A few wore Polo.) Smelling it immediately throws me back to 1990.

At mine, too, but in the 80s 😉

I loved Polo and wanted some for myself but settled for Ralph Lauren Chaps. In high school I wore Obsession for Men. Nowadays I feel quite uncomfortable in anything too *masculine.* Go fig.

Jicky EDP, Jicky EDT and Fougere Bengale – Jicky because it’s a classic, and FB because it has “fougere” in its name. 🙂 FB is a bit too foody for my liking (i. e. it smells like a mix of spices for soup or another dish), though it’s still an interesting scent. On the other hand, I am quite enjoying Jicky today.

    Tuscany Per Uomo Forte Aramis.
A fougere that is all lemons, herbs, and cedarwood, on my skin.
For sh!ts and giggles I searched this on eBay, and sellers are requesting outrageous amount for a bottle.
    Asking is not receiving.
    ????
    Took the day off.
    Triple strength coffee.
    Extra extra long workout because……..
Made spaghetti and meatballs, with lots of garlic, black pepper, Pecorino Romano and whole milk Ricotta cheeses, for breakfast!
As everyone in my Italian family always says, “MANGIA !!!” (All caps required! )
    LOLOLOL
    ????????????????????????????????
    Carpe Diem.
    Peace.

It’s not the fat that’s fattening, it’s the carbs… I can’t do low fat dairy- makes me feel like I’m settling. But that breakfast! I’ve been rushing around and haven’t eaten yet. I’m thinking a big plate of that followed by a pasta coma sounds blissful right now.

I just make sure I get enough protein.
Carbs, fat I don’t worry about, TOO many calories is what kills.
I like the taste and texture of 0% fat Greek yogurt.

Huh. I don’t generally do low-fat except with dairy. I can’t tell much of a difference between reg and low-fat sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. That said, I really can tell the difference between whole milk and low-fat milk lattes, but that’s a drink that’s all about the milk.

In agreement with you, Bear, about going all-out with Italian food, which is why I don’t cook it very often 😉

SOTD is Mugler Fougere Furieuse. Yesterday I received the bottle of Tom Ford F***ing Fabulous and was pleasantly surprised. It was much lighter and airier than I expected; Very green, with iris and leather. There is something familiar about it but I can’t think of what it reminded me of. Nothing I already own.

I Don’t Do fougeres, though I often love smelling them on other people. Sampling Amouage Figment Woman (too soon to know how I feel about it yet).

My dad wore Old Spice for years — spices and benzoin, yummy. It used to be just gorgeous.

As an aside, I am underimpressed by Figment Woman.

Old Spice is ABSOLUTELY an oriental.

I’m commando today because my cold/flu/bubonic plague has taken up residence in my nose and I can’t smell a blessed thing. I’m conjuring up the scent of vintage Tabac Original, though.

Not a fougere fan and the only thing I have in the house is my husband’s Fougere Classique aftershave from some little artisanal outfit. I don’t like that one either so not sure why I bought it for him, lol. And when he uses, he out-sillages me! He said he’d wear extra on my behalf today. Also thought about LL Mousse de Chene which smells more like a fougere oriental than a chypre but it’s a bit much for work. So…
I’m in a few spritzes of SL Clair de Musc.

Well, Jicky seems to be a choice for many of us. I’m wearing the edt and enjoying it. I am coming to the conclusion that Guerlain is one of my favorite fragrance houses. Other than Shalimar, I haven’t tried one Guerlain that I haven’t loved. I like most of the AAs that I own. I even liked my sample of LPRN. Once I finish my decant, a full bottle of Jicky is in my future.

Guerlain is one of my favorite house as well. AG has turned into another fav of mine but I have more Guerlain and Chanel then any other house. I do love Shalimar in all its flankers and forms. One I want to try is VdN. If you like LPRN you should try Black Perfecto

Happy FriYAY!!!!!!! What a brutally long week this time around!

I have to admit, after all these years on NST, I somehow never heard of a fougère. To make things worse, my brain was seeing and translating “fromage”, which made me wonder who enjoys cheese scents? HA HA HA

So after struggling to make sense of it all, I cheated and copied Robin’s earlier post this week, and went with SJP Covet. Enjoying it greatly! Tonight I’ll slather on some Old Spice, now that I understand the category a bit more! 🙂

I tried it three different times and the skittles note always showed up. I gave the rest of my sample to my friend, and it smells incredible on her.

    Good Morning guys!

    1) Dark, chilly and damp this am- welcome to Portland for the next few months. Although at sunrise at 8-ish the mist rose from the ground and the leaves caught some of the light. Beautiful.

    2) SOTD is Elixir de Merveilles (from a sample made earlier this year). Classified as a Oriental Fougere (who knew? I didn’t) this is both warming and refreshing. Perfect, I think, for a chilly day or night and I can totes see this on a sexy guy or a sexy lady.

Kpaint, Vintage extrait is very rich and spicy, not as resinous as Opium, it leans more animalic on me. This was love at first sniff, back in 1986. I saved my tips to get this one!
If you can find it, Fendi Uomo (the original) is gorgeous. I found a bottle on flea bay for the hubby and it is sexy stuff.

Was going to wear Boy or Jicky but felt like something cozier. I have to take advantage of the cooler mornings here in SoCal while I can!

Continuing my Scent Bar sample usage. I was looking for the sample of Biblioteca de Babel because I was in the mood for a gingersnap, but didn’t see it. I compromised with Nasomatto Baraonda.

“Baraonda smells like the pleasures of fall, painted with a light hand. A tumbler of whiskey held up to catch the glow from an open fire. Delicate little glass bowls holding red berries, quince, and apples baked slowly until they fall apart. An old book, open on the lap, filling the air with the dry, papery scent of lignin. A hint of caramelized wood resin dancing around the edges of the room but never closing in.”

I’m sorry to be a poor community member, but I just didn’t want Idyllwild today, which is my only fougere (that I know about, anyway). So I’m in SSS Jour Ensoleille, to remind me of the warmth that has just fled the air. There are rumors that it will rain tomorrow (I’m in the Bay Area, so that’s serious), so I need memories of a sunny day to keep me buoyed 🙂

I hear some people get animalics out of this one; all I get is gorgeous white flowers with the slightest touch of dirt underfoot. A fragrant, sun-drenched, well-manicured garden. Do you get animalics?

I don’t know that I’d call it animalic, but the florals did smell like they were on the verge of turning, over ripe. But in a good way. Prior to trying that, I didn’t really like white florals, but this one smelled golden and earthy. Now I like the “ladies who lunch” ones too, but the SSS was my gateway.

I kind of went the other way–before falling down the rabbit hole, I found a light application of BWFs to be pleasant (and more than that to be horrifically cloying, ahhhhh, get away from me). Now that I know how much more one can do with scent, I’ve wholly abandoned that category, and only especially lovely ones like JE can pull me back.

JE is one of my absolute favorite perfumes as well. I find it indolic which I suppose overlaps with animalic.

I actually wore JE to work yesterday and one of my colleagues noted (quite politely) that my perfume was nice but “very strong”. I should have known better – JE is not exactly an office scent!

Heh, I think all the SSSs are quite strong 🙂 They are all parfum strength, right? But I am not often in close quarters with other people in my job, so they are, for the most part, office scents for me!

I do get a sort of dirty, furry warmth to it. It is borderline Ho Panties on me (it’s the jasmine. it’s always the jasmine) but golden and glowy.

Yep, I get the borderline Ho Panties that have been stolen by a dirty, furry animal and brought out to the untended area of the garden and dragged into its burrow. I’m not sure if the animal is still alive in there or not, or maybe the recent rain is creating that slightly rotting acrid mud smell.
        In a good way. 😉

I’ve been wearing it as my mainstay for the past three years or so, and certainly find it lovely. The lavender note is transportive, wonderful soothing and natural, and the vanilla both sensual and a touch salty. A toasted tonka bean, rich amber and somewhat skin-like musk round things out. I’ve heard good things about the vintage, but this is one of those compositions that gives me so much joy in its current form that I really do not feel the need to hunt up an older bottle.

Have been out of the loop and couldn’t remember what today’s theme was. But I was craving something rich, heavy and spicy – and am not quite there in Mugler Oriental Express.

Spent the morning working out my Sephora order, which always creates some level of anxiety for me (what if I forget something?!?) I finally settled on what I wanted and found I’d entered a $50 GC into my online account that I’d completely forgotten about (and would have forgotten about had I not already entered it) so that was a nice surprise. I ended up with lots of makeup, which I haven’t bought (for fun, anyway) in ages. It’s possible that it’s been a couple of years since I bought a lipstick, which as a former makeup junkie is amazing to me.

I didn’t buy any perfume except the Berdoues coffret and a bottle of Platinum Egoiste for my H. Did I miss any scented fun? I may place a 2nd order, so do chime in if there’s something I shouldn’t be missing out on…

I ordered some Hourglass face powders, Urban Decay lipstick, and Atelier Cologne Cafe Tuberosa. I would have ordered Hermes Twilly but all they offer is the 30ml size and I like big bottles. Guess I will get that at Nordies when I get some Notes accumulated.

Late to the party today! Thanks to a comment that Bear made earlier this week, my choice today was easy. SOTD = Jicky EdT, from the sample stash. And I did smell lavender in it today, since I paid attention. Not for very long on me, though. It was gone after an hour at most.

I actually went commando for most of the day, because I meant to look up fougeres to see if I had one, and forgot.

Anyway I trawled through Fragrantica tonight and other than being supremely irritated at how slowly the wretched page loads for that view (much worse than searching by note) I recognised 3 or 4 things I have tried. Most of the bottles seemed to be big name brands that I don’t trust to be any good. The only one I remember trying and liking a lot was Loewe “Esencia pour homme”, plus I have Caron “pour un homme” but wasn’t in the mood for it.

SOTE was Tom Ford “White Suede”, which I was about to dismiss as the epitome of pointlessness, but on looking it up it’s a white musk based scent and I am musk anosmic. So YMM definitely V.

TOMK is feeling very fed up with suspected tendonitis in one knee. We hobbled up the road for a curry and argued happily about how we’re going to organise the layout of the new apartment, assuming we get it. Have a good weekend y’all! :^)

Hey, NST, a happy Fougère Friday to ya! I wore my only other fougère (Amouage Opus II) yesterday, and today I’m participating in Jicky.

How’s it goin’ with y’all? I’ve been bad about checking in lately. I missed you lovely peeps. Me, I stubbed the heck out of my middle toe last week and clearly broke it. (I am a world-class klutz, after all.) It wasn’t bad enough to warrant an ER visit, so I’ve just had it ‘buddy taped’ since then and have been limping around so as to let it heal up. It’s really OK, but is sure does look gross. ????????

    Have yourselves a fantastic weekend!

Ouch ouch ouch. You broke your toe and you can fix it almost self-service? I shouldn’t be surprised as I had a hairline fracture of an ankle bone when I was a freshman in college and the ER would not treat me until one of my parents gave consent since I was not yet 18. Once consent was given and x-rays showed the hairline fracture, there was nothing they could do about it except to tell me to not put pressure on it (their way of saying don’t walk on it which was hard because I did not even get crutches). Anyway, that ankle knows when rain is on its way.

Her’s hoping it heals well and quickly!

Oh dear, your poor ankle! (Thank goodness it wasn’t worse since you had to wait! Oof!) I’m in a similar boat as far as treating this. It wasn’t a compound fracture, and it wasn’t displaced at all so far as I could tell, so according to the interwebs, there was no need to have it X-rayed or reset. The only thing to do is keep it taped and stay off it until it heals. Guess who’s gonna be wearing flip flops for Thanksgiving!?????

SOTD = Mona di Orio Violette Fumee

I almost never see this as anyone’s SOTD, including mine. I have a FB in a gorgeous presentation box which I bought at MinNY for a good discount. Anyway, this is an Oriental Fougere according to Fragrantica. That said, I actually don’t smell the lavender. I’m thinking that the cashmeran drowned out the lavender by giving off a leather-like smell.

I’ve been wearing Old Spice (the aftershave and the EDP-like ‘cologne’ formulation, both vintage) a lot this Autumn and they are certainly oriental to me… My son wears vintage Opium (for women) and there is, to my nose anyway, so significant overlap (I think I read somewhere that Jean Claude Ellena suggested layering them to butch up Opium a bit.)

Anyway, this morning I wore Yatagan, which I have read bears some resemblance to Eloge du Traitre… Leffingwell lists Yatagan as a woody Chypre, but I swear there’s a fougere accord in there somewhere. Anyway, bedtime here now, so after I get out of the bath it will be my on-again, off-again signature, good old Caron Pour un Homme… I know some say its a soliflore, but given the central role coumarin plays in brokering the relationship between lavender and vanilla, I always feel it deserves its fougere designation. No matter how you think of it, it is wonderful.

Late as usual, but participating! I had to look on Fragrantica to see what I might have in the way of a sample, and from my two choices, I went with Aqaba Men II. It opened with that classic “men’s cologne” thing that I associate, probably wrongly, with fougeres, and I immediately thought, “Not for me.” Twenty minutes later, though, those top notes were gone, and there was a spicy, herbal, sweet but not cloying perfume. (That’ll teach me to judge a perfume by its top notes.) The card lists the notes as: green notes, peppercorns, thyme, and sandalwood. Somehow those things combined to give me the impression of spiced, slightly green orange. It was really, really nice, and I started wondering if it might end up on my to-buy list. An hour later it got very quiet, and a couple hours after that, it was gone. Too fleeting for my tastes, but fun while it lasted. I really do enjoy the Friday Community Projects, and it’s good to have a reason to push myself to try things that aren’t immediately appealing to me.
