Hey, it's Hump Day! Plus, World Pasta Day and Pablo Picasso's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
Can you guess my fragrance from the image? One more clue: lamp oil.
Reminder: 10/27 will be Guessing Game Friday. Describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: Black Licorice Twists are $3.99 a pound at Economy Candy.
To honor World Pasta Today I am having spaghetti bolognese today.
I’m wearing Parfum d’Empire Le Cri for the first time, it’s a love at first sniff for me.
I’ll be off to my second french class in the afternoon. I signed up to continue the course from last year.
So glad to hear it’s good!
It is. And has a lovely vintage vibe.
I’m guessing you are wearing either Lampblack or Lolita Lempeka.
Good guesses, but it’s Kerosene Black Vines đ
I will make the little ones pasta, or maybe some ravioli.
Can’t go wrong with ANY pasta
Pasta anything is wonderful!
Although, it’s so hot in SF today, only cool liquids appeal.
ravioli was a hit!
buon appetito & bon chance en classe!
Merci!
Super busy working until very late at night with no time to even breathe.
SOTD Balenciaga Paris. I have always liked it, but today it is disturbing me greatly. It is strong and lasting forever, but no time to scrub it off. I hope to have some time later to catch up on yesterday’s and today’s comments. Have a nice and peaceul Wednesday everyone!
Triple strength coffee.
Thank you for your concern.
I am fine.
????
Bear, I am so HAPPY to see you back and know that you are fine. In so much need of a triple strength coffee!!! Getting up from my desk now to get one! đ
Bear is back! Hooray!
Thanks!
????
Good to see you Bear, glad you are ok. Missed you.
Thank you.
????
There he is!
â????
I wore this last week. I really like it…good thing because it lasted through the night!
I’m wearing L’Ambre des Merveilles today. Good news, my bottle does not seem to have gone off as I feared. It doesn’t have quite the same sparkle as it used to, but I am still enjoying it very much!
Yay! I guess I better use mine up before it does the same.
Is there some bad statistics with it? Should I worry too?
I was just worrying recently that a couple of my 5 year old bottles were starting to turn, but this one is doing okay. No widespread issues!
Not so far as I know, and did not realize how old Sterling’s bottle was — 5 years is always iffy, even though many fragrances last ages longer than that.
Bear is back! Glad you are ok!
We are listening to monkeys new favorite , Mark Anthony on maximum volume these days!
Guessing game. Another Oriental, this time a Vanilla/Woody Oriental from a major house. bergamot, mandarin, peach, vanilla, jasmine, rose, magnolia, vetiver, cedar, orange blossom, lotus and peony. Not really mentioned to much on here, but other fragrances from this house are daily.
Tea Mariage FrĂšres..
Breakfast homemade granola and yogurt from the farmers market.
Thank you.
????
Is it Chanel Allure?
Ding Ding! You win!
Somehow a bottle of this ended up in my basket while shopping at Clydes..Donatella forgives right?
Of course! And I would think of it more as a souvenir from a great bygone apothecary. And souvenirs certainly don’t count!
Agreed!
My friend that I was shopping with got Oscar de la Renta body powder. She showed me the packaging..so beautiful! And the scent! Heavenly! And a discount to boot! Win win
I’m wearing Laboratorio Olfativo Alambar. I absolutely adore this and swoon every time I wear it – warm amber, cinnamon spice, a dab of cocoa and vanilla and I would say incense, although incense is not listed in the notes.
That does sound like an intriguing scent, lovely!
That’s my favorite from Laboratorio Olfattivo
Today’s Scent Of The Day is Original Musk oil by Kiehl`s with a spritz of L’ Artisan’s Patchouli Patch to give it more oomph.
I need to follow Bear’s lead and have some triple strength coffee.
Sounds like a great combo!
Lampblack, Robin? I’ve fallen for Elephant and it’s grassy self.
Oh, excellent guess, but it’s Kerosene Black Vines (Elisa guessed it below).
That’s what I (the other Elisa) was going to guess đ
It’s the Elisa mind-meld ????
Awww. I see my guess of Brin de Reglisse would’ve been WAY off!
Niki de Saint Phalle layered over Kiehl’s Musk. I smell like week-old flowers đ
But in a good way!
Good morning Y’all! This is the first truly COLD morning in my area, and I’m shivering! Brrrrrrrrrrrr This Southern gal likes the HEAT! Give me 90 degrees and above please….
I’m finishing a sample of Chanel Gabrielle. I wore some to bed last night, and was thinking that it’s pretty but nothing all that different. But the hubby immediately commented on how much it likes it. I could still smell it this morning too, so it’s a good one. I don’t feel the need to invest in a bottle, but I certainly wouldn’t turn a bottle down from Santa…. đ
JadainGA, I have the small bottle and box of Gabrielle if youâre interested. My email is beas dot Beverly at geee mail dot com.
It’s 90 here in San Diego… I’ll trade you!
Robin, you’re wearing Kerosene Black Vines?
Feeling better and can smell so far, so wearing a soft rose/patchouli whose name has “grey” (in French) in it. From an old, iconic house that also has an exclusive lineup.
Ding ding ding! Yes. And so glad you’re feeling better!
Thanks and you smell fun!
Gris Montaigne?
That’s it!!!
Yay! You smell fabulous. đ
Thanks!
SOTD is an old favorite – orange blossom, cumin and a little sweetness, and that’s about it.
SL Fleur d’Oranger?
No, that’s not the one. The one I’m wearing is a less indolic OB than the SL.
Is it Gucci?
Elisa wins! Yes, it’s that oldie-but-goodie Gucci EDP. đ
Houbigant Orangers en Fleurs?
No, but I want to try that one!
HG Dilettante? (Not very old, though….)
Azemour?
I’m departing from the ELDO discovery kit and wearing Jacomo #8, which I bought last month. It was a blind buy based on many mentions from fellow NSTers. So far I am liking it. I’m getting quite a bit of honey, which is one of my favorite cooler weather notes. I think this may become a staple fall and winter fragrance for me.
I blind bought that one, too, and I like it a lot! Very comforting chai scent on me, perfect for cool weather.
Yay for World Pasta Day!
I am wearing Galimard Rencontre today.
I just heard some sad news that the legendary Fats Domino has died at the age of 89 years. Great musician and singer.
Oh my — sorry to say I did not know he was still alive. Was also bummed to hear that Robert Guillaume (Benson!) died yesterday.
I had the exact same thought about not realizing he was still alive. Benson of the show Benson?! Gosh, haven’t thought about that show in decades.
Yes, and from Soap before that.
I had not heard the news of Robert Guillaume’s passing. RIP.
I’m trying a new scent so I don’t expect anyone to guess it: DSH Tsukimi, a lovely spiced wood.
On my list to try, happy to hear it’s lovely!
We are obssessed with our SOTD so we hides the treasure on a tiny island of an underground lake. Raw fishes are on the menu but we smells of almond dessert.
Hahaha! Mon Precieux Nectar?
Yup!
I love the idea of Gollum spritzing a little Guerlain! “You know, he could use a shampoo and I wish he wouldn’t do that with his tongue, but you gotta admit the guy smells surprisingly great.”
It can only help!
???? Love this!
I hope that you are feeling a liitle better today!
ROFL!
Thanks for that…gave me a good laugh.
That was pretty great đ
LOVED this. I couldn’t figure it out, but after Regina guessed it, it was so obvious.
My sotd is from a French niche brand.
Three Wise Men bringing gifts.
What am I wearing? đ
Its a great scent!
Other smelly chit chat:
My husband sent me on a ‘mission’ to buy a sprayer deodorant, preferably not a nivea or Axe.
I bought Acqua di Parma, Cologna Essenza (the brown coloured ones).
I hope he likes it!
I am in the train and there is a young woman sitting next to me who smells like cotton candy Its a bit suffocating. But i wonder what it is….
Larmes du Desert?
Bingo! Thats correct đ
sounds wonderful, leaning about so many new scents this week!
Yes i like this guessing game. đ
Larmes du DĂ©sert is a beautiful smooth incense, warmer and more ‘sensual’ (nah i hate that word, esp in connection with fragrance, because over used, but i cannot think of something else) than the CdG-incenses i tried.
But the price of Larmes is no so smooth hahaha.
Passage d’enfer by L’Artisan?
La Myrrhe by SL?
Thegoddessrena had the correct answer!
I still need to smell the ones you mentioned….they both sound good.
AH!
đ
Black Vines was a scrub-and-quarantine-in-ten-plastic bags for me… which is weird because I am a black licorice lover!
SOTD is vintage Tabac Blond which I got in a swap from nozknos. And I miiiiiight have taken a Sudafed for only a very slightly stuffy nose, just because I didn’t want to waste my Tabac Blond on an imperfect sniffer!
update, I put on my sweater with some of yesterday’s Botrytis hanging around, and wow is this a great combination
I promise to stay away from you today, LOL…
You smell great.
Ohhhhh, Tabac Blond … a great favorite. You smell(ed) magnificent.
Apples, hay, leather. SSS Equestrian which is an âalways worksâ perfume for me. Had a long day yesterday moving the in-laws so I needed something easy to power me through my classes today.
I need to try this. Sounds PERFECT for winter!
SOTD: Nothing for the second day and I miss scenting myself already!
I have decided that I will scent a card each day here in Japan and pop it in my handbag or pocket as my SOTD!
Great idea!
Totally intimidated by others’ creative clues, I will spare you all my hackneyed attempt at the guessing game. I’ll just come out and say it: SOTD is Femininite du Bois.
I love FdB. I know that there are people who lament the Shiseido version being discontinued and the SL being thinner and having less depth. I tried the old one and the new one still smells like the old one and just as good. Reformulations are inevitable in a lot of ways.
Oh, I love Black Vinesâyou smell delightful! I’m in CafĂ© Tuberosa for the fifth day running (that never happens), and my sample vial is almost drained…
Really want to go out and try this.
Please don’t read Kevin’s review today then. He did not love it. (And I frequently don’t love the ACs everyone else loves, for that matter.)
Haha, I just read that! From everything I’ve heard it seems to be a love-or-hate fragrance, and I’m happily in the love camp! I don’t wear tuberose fragrances often, and had no particular hopes for this one, but found the tuberose plunged in caffĂš latte surprisingly delightful.
31 RC EDT today.
Nice!
Psa, I see Twilly is on Zullily today. Doing the all black, and red lipstick look today. Plus my hair actually turned out pretty good, so sotd is Coco Noir.
House Twins
Coco Noir is beautiful, the body cream if you ever try it is delicious! So good for this time of the year
Does the cream last longer than the edp? Because it is so fleeting on me.
Enabler pin to ElisaP for encouraging me to go out and get myself a head cold. The aches have passed, and it’s now just stuffiness and the beginning stages of coughing.
That being said….the sample I spritzed is cutting right through the congestion. Swirling violets and berries and iris. Glad I waited for my husband to take off before I sprayed. This puppy is strong out of the gate.
Are we guessing? Is it Apres LâOndee?
Nope. Right house though. Just far less subtle.
Guerlain Insolence? Hope you’re feeling better soon.
Yep. Thanks.
Absolutely no motivation beyond drinking tea and vegging out.
You smell great..
Hope I get points for guessing the right house đ
Feel better!
Oh, no! Not the enabler pin I was looking for. Well, I hope it passes soon. Drinking tea and vegging sound like a good Rx. I’m feeling much better and imagining it’s the massive doses of vitamin C I’ve been taking since it started.
Need to do that. I used to buy rolls of chewable and go through whole roll. I also swore by the cold care tea by Celestial Seasonings with zinc and echinacea. But they changed the formula, and I don’t like the new flavor.
Do try pure peppermint tea with lots of lemon and some honey – you can’t go wrong!!!!
SOTD is a well loved release from 1996, warm sweet and spicy vanilla. Some say it smells like a Christmas candle, not me.
Dior Dune?
nope
đ
that’s a shame, the price was $1M
should read “prize” đ
I want to say it’s Byredo 1996, but that seems a bit on the nose, and I have no idea what it smells like đ
no. The nose is Dominique Ropion.
Hmmm. I don’t know the exact year in the 90s and I don’t think it smells like a Christmas candle, but, Chopard Casmir?
no. The nose is Dominique Ropion.
L’elephant?
Oui! Vous gagnez
I’m not liking this cold a whole lot. What I really don’t like is the fact that it’s getting dark earlier and the sun doesn’t even begin to rise until about 7:30 am. The cold isn’t as bad as long as the sun is shining. My SOTD is vintage Bal.
agreed. the ONLY upside for me is perfume weather
$3.99 a POUND! Wow. I wonder what a pound of licorice looks like.
I’m in a cloud of sandalwood interspersed with gorgeous blush-colored roses! The current formulation or today’s weather seems to have amped up the roses (it’s a new bottle, so I can’t be sure). Many people don’t get rose from this perfume.
Jâadore Touche?
Nope! Never tried it. I absolutely loathe J’Adore, but that might be because of its ubiquity. Is J’Adore Touche different enough to be worth trying?
no idea, i’m probably being rude & cheating by guessing based on internet research.
No one said it was against the rules!
Santal Blush?
Haha, no, but if I had remembered the existence of that (gorgeous) perfume, I might have tried to avoid calling the roses in my scent blush-colored. Good guess đ
Hint: If I’m not mistaken, it’s a prestige fragrance? But the fact that I’m not sure if it’s a fashion house or not might also be a hint.
Mohur?
Oh, didn’t tead your above comment. Guess retracted. I’m guessing your bottle of 10 Corso Como came?
YES! Ding ding ding, congratulations, Elisa P! It arrived last night (for the splitmeet), and I obviously needed to test it out to make sure it was good enough to split đ
(Do you get sandalwood from Mohur?? Wow, I don’t! I’ll have to pay more attention the next time I wear it.)
Yay! I’ve only tried the extrait and I get a lot of sandalwood in that.
10 Corso Como?
Exactly right đ Elisa P beat you to it by a minute!
We can share the glory ????
28 La Pausa EDT and FM Iris Hand Cream.
OMG, how is that hand cream? Is it the most luxurious thing in the world?
I think it is worth the splurge for the lovely packaging and the overall quality.
I have spent a lot of time explaining to myself why I don’t need that hand cream, but really it’s just a matter of time. You smell great!
It helps that it’s a gazillion dollars. If it were half a gazillion dollars, it would still be ridiculously expensive for hand cream, but less ridiculously so, and thus would be a much tougher decision for me!
yeah, it really is lovely. not a necessity, but that’s what makes it so special. it doesn’t disappoint.
Good to know đ If I do something that merits a present-to-self, this is certainly going to be high on the list.
Resistance is futile.
đ
Guess my SOTD:
This is a “masculine” scent from an old and venerable brand, though I “instant”ly decided it’s not too much so for me. Notes include patchouli, cocoa and anise (according to fragrantica).
So question for anybody who likes Boucheron and might be familiar with the various formulations: How different is the EdP from the EdT? I ask because I was in TJ Maxx yesterday, and I saw refill bottles of the EdP. I already have the EdT, but I was still sort of tempted.
Also, I saw a couple of Oscar de la Rentas that I can’t find any info on. I googled and found basically nothing, and they’re not listed on Fragrantica as far as I can find. One was called Midnight Amber, and the other was called Ruby Velvet. The only thing I could find was a couple Ruby Velvets for sale on eBay, but not much info.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Oscar-de-la-Renta-Ruby-Velvet-Womens-Perfume-3-4-oz-Eau-de-Toilette-Spray/112591634797?epid=1800239095&hash=item1a36fc016d%3Ag%3Ad54AAOSwb7NZ14T-
The amber one looks pretty much the same, just a black box and bottle. Has anybody else heard of these? I’m almost tempted to buy one just out of curiosity.
L’Instant pour Homme
I got your: “instant”ly decided ! HA!
Yay! I figured that would give it away.
Ok so I think maybe I figured out what the mystery Oscars are. I think they are just differently named/packaged versions of these:
Oscar Velvet (Ruby): https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Oscar-de-la-Renta/Oscar-Velvet-40949.html
Velvet Noir (Amber): https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Oscar-de-la-Renta/Oscar-Velvet-Noir-38328.html
I could eat pasta every day! Today I’m wearing Aedes Pilargonium. I’m loving that fragrance.
Me tooooooo! Except then I’d die of diabetes and/or obesity and/or malnutrition (you know, if I ate nothing but, which is what I would like to do). Mmmmm pasta. Mmmmm refined white flour.
No new perfume yet this AM, but I still faintly wafting a perfume my husband loves from last night. He wants to buy me a full bottle for my birthday next week, but it is not one of my favorites. I am encouraging him to chose the travel size ????
What is it? Hint: My cats can pronounce this modern Lily of the Valley perfectly.
I just went through fragrantica’s lily of the valley list to see if there were any perfumes called “mrrrr” or “meaowwww” or “ronron,” but there aren’t, so I’m stumped, but SO CURIOUS.
Miu Miu!
You’re a GENIUS.
Yes! ????????????
Yours is my favorite clue so far this week.
meow meow
=^..^= =^..^=
Thanks to some Claritin D, my sinuses are feeling normal again, so I am wearing something that doesnât work with a sinus headache. SOTD is Alaia EDP Blanche.
Glad your feeling better.
Alaia Blanche is a pretty fragrance. After sampling it once I can see how it would feel nice even with a headache.
I am wearing an âexclusiveâ vanilla incense from a bottle that has my name on it. First one in the U.S. to guess right will get my samples of By Kilian Gold Knight and Woman in Gold, courtesy of Bergdorf Goodman. If you donât want the samples, please let me know in your guess comment. Good luck!
Le Labo Vanille 44?!
Congratulations! I know where you live!
Yay! Thank you so much for your generosity! I haven’t tried any of the Kilian releases since Sacred Wood.
Ooooor Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille?
I’ll need to wear this one day soon.
What did you think of the new Kilians?
I’ve only tried Gold Knight but I think I had something else on when I wore it so need to try again. The packaging looks interesting.
Best of days to all. I slept so brilliantly yesterday (right until half-past six!) that I had no time to post to NST. It was a bad day, with an over-wrought student screaming and hurling abuse at me, but I was so rested and relaxed that I donât care. Today I have to help the same student prepare for her viva, but Iâm still rested and relaxed, so she can bring her attitude round in buckets if she likes and I donât think it will worry me.
Todayâs perfume is particularly mis-named, in my opinion. The mis-match is so great that I find everything associated with it misleading, and so I have decided to rename it âEquivocalâ. Guess?
The kittens are in full riot. Eric has the Collar of Destiny (the Pink Fur of Destiny disintegrated from over-zealous loving) which he is trying to tow around. Titus is sitting on most of it, so Eric is making no headway at all because Titus weighs nearly a kilogram more than Eric. When E gets to three kilograms, we will have his ECG done so that we know just how bad (or good, maybe; we live in hope) his tiny ticker is. He is gaining about 100 grams a week, and is closing steadily on three kilos. The Brown Brothers are knocking on four kilos: very bonny babies they are. I miss Isabella and Dakkie, but these little purrs are very special too.
Oh goodness me, Iâve written a book about the kittens. Sorry. Didnât mean to, and now must get to work so I can prepare to talk to That Student. I will come back when I can to see who deduced the answer to Equivocal. Be well, safe, and as always, fabulously fragrant, NST.
You should NEVER apologize for your kitten stories!
Best of luck dealing with your dreadfully behaved student.
Thank you! You probably shouldnât encourage me, though, âcos the purrs are so endlessly adorable that I have whole shelves of stories.
I should have said above, Equivocal is a perfume of the light. Hermes has just done Twilly, but honestly, the scent of Equivocal is frilly and ruffled. Itâs a chiffon scent. The perfume has a soft-as-dawn-light, insubstantial, ephemeral quality, dancing on the air and slipping past me all the time.
I’m intrigued but stumped on the scent. And appalled by your student.
I keep thinking Absolute is in the name….
No, no absolute (I think). It’s a golden floral, full of Spring and joy.
This is getting too tricky…chiffon, soft-as-dawn light, insubstantial…I keep thinking Chanel or Hermes in style but they all seem to have perfume-appropriate names. So, it’s got to be one of your fancy French scents…and I think you’ve complained about the name before. I think you are wearing perfume (definitely) ….Yes, definitely perfume …CONCRETE? Very unlikely as it’s not in the country
Wrong house, wrong country of origin…definitely a wrong name, in my opinion. Deva also likes this perfume, I think, but it doesn’t get a lot of love from reviewers.
Conspiracy?
It must be fate…
Amouage Fate Woman but I only guessed it from another clue you left.
How is it even acceptable for the student to behave so?
This evening fragrance was released in 2009. Its sibling, released the following year, was hailed as “skanky” and “too animalic.”
I made Jim Lahey’s recipe for “no-knead” bread this morning and the house smells really nice. I wish the loaf would hurry up and cool, I haven’t had breakfast yet.
Cologne Poir Le Soir?
*Cologne Pour Le Soir
I’m going to guess MFK Cologne pour le Soir.
Yes to you both!
wow..I have no guesses
ah! someone guessed and go it right!
I canât wait to hear how the bread turns out. I love making bread, and a âno kneadâ version sounds wonderful.
I’m wearing a perfume that was one of the first released from a luxury niche brand whose owner is heir to a liquor fortune. The scent is sweet orange blossom marshmallow cuddlefluff.
I know it’s a Kilian. Is it Love?
Yes, it is!
yum! you smell great
SOTD – Dirty Velvet. I cannot reconcile the scent and the name, but love the fig in it đ
Guys,
have you ever tried Fortis from Les Liquids Imaginaires?
What do you think?
Is there anything like it or better than this one on the market?
My colleage hugged me today and I could smell it on myself for an hour đ
SotD = Arz el-Rab
Ginger-iris-cedar, it’s easy-peasy. Almost smells like licorice in a way.
Kerosene Black Vines is a good name for a garage band, or the secret password for a speakeasy.
I read Oliver Sacks’ “The Mind’s Eye” last week. He mentions evidence that perhaps Picasso had difficulty with stereo vision. If true he would have perceived the world somewhere between two and three dimensions.
That’s so interesting. It reminds me of learning that there is evidence that Ravel had Alzheimer’s, which makes his Bolero much more understandable.
I heard that about Ravel and Alzheimer’s too! It makes sense to me.
So fascinating to think how the working of the mind varies from person to person. Dr. Sacks’ books are among my favorite non-fiction. He hits the perfect balance between science and humanity.
Oh how interesting! I love him and need to read that book.
Testing out the Cire Trudon perfumes today. They are pretty light, although it’s hard to tell for sure from dabber samples. My favourite is Revolution.
Layers of lavender and spices/aromatics for me today by a brand that rhymes with ‘Vogue’ đ
MEM by Bogue?
Ding, ding, ding!
I haven’t worn perfume much of late, but this morning as I was rummaging through my desk drawer at work, I came upon some samples that our lovely WendySue had given me several months ago. I pulled out one that I hadn’t tried before: for walks, by Blocki, and gave it a go. It’s subtle and pretty, I enjoyed it.
My improv dinner this evening will be an open-face sandwich (a tartine, if you please!) of thickly slathered pesto and slices of my last perfectly ripe garden tomato, with a glass of rosĂ©. Goodbye, sweet summer…
Your sandwich sounds yummy. I’m glad you were able to enjoy some perfume today. Goodbye summer, sigh…..
Got inspired by World Pasta Day too late and will make my Lasagna Bolognese tomorrow.
Still unpacking boxes from our recent move to the PNW. I’m in Reglisse Noire today and enjoying it thoroughly.
We are sorta cousins!
I won’t even try to make you guess, because I’ve gone on an Ormonde Jayne bender tonight. I’m trying Frangipani, Ta’if, Champaca and Man in various spots of my body. Interesting, at least to me, in this combo Champaca is hitting the spot most strongly right now. It didn’t win me over before but today it just seems so sunny and cheery.
