Thursday scent of the day 10/19

Posted by Robin on 19 October 2017 240 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque Oyedo, which is just about enough havoc on its own.

Reminder: 10/20 will be Reeking Havoc Friday...in honor of Holly (who is frequently reeking havoc), wear as many perfume samples at once as you can stand. Suggested by FearsMice.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Warming up for tomorrow, I layered three scents (although only one of them is a sample). So I am wearing Tom Ford White Patchouli on my wrists, Estee Lauder Private Collection in the crook of elbow and Cuir de Lancome on the back of my neck. They work quite nicely together.

I am in AG Heure Exquise EdP (THANKS Hajusuuri!). It is so beautiful and I like it much more than de EdT that I have. It is more powdery, softer and has a better longevity. A full bottle will be mine very soon.

Last night I ordered Thai food and sprayed on Dzing with reckless abandonment. It was sooo good. I enjoyed Dzing like never before 😀

I was at the Bronx Zoo on Saturday and I passed by the camel rides and thought about what your husband said about Dzing! lol.
      You smell lovely today!

Maybe just a hint of that smell in Dzing! Have you ever tried Slumberhouse New Sibet? That smells more like a pack of camels. I like that smell, though.

I also get some camel smell in Dzing. I have not tried New Sibet, but I will get a sample now. Probably, after smelling New Sibet, my husband will approve Dzing 😉

Heure Exquise is such beautiful perfume – I’ll join you in wearing it today, thanks for the idea.
Do you know, how recent is your sample/decant? My bottle is about 5 y.o. and I wonder how much it has been reformulated since if anyone tried it recently.

I do not know how old my decant is. Hajusuuri sent it to me like 2 weeks ago, but it smells divine. Hopefully, she will chime in later when she reads the post.

I bought the edp within the last year or so and it’s gorgeous. Rich, almost chocolatey galbanum and florals; clear resemblance to no 19 at first and then warmer. I bought a backup bottle…

I got it 1.5 to 2 years ago. Maybe it is magical because the box was signed by Isabelle Doyen 🙂

and Robin I am laughing about what you said about Oyedo…my girlfriend and I each got a sample of it when we went sniffing for my bday last spring and all I could detect was the yuzu (first words out of my mouth when I smelled it in the boutique in GCT)…she loved it so much that she drained her sample and I had to give her mine.

        She has good taste 😉

Kevin very kindly sent me a travel spray. Unless I am crazy, it is far smoother and cleaner than it used to be. Less sparkle. More citrus, way less herbs. Still a great scent but they’ve removed all the weirdness.

Comparing it to the dregs of my older Oyedo, which I have on the other arm, seems unfair because of the aging, but I think it’s been quite changed.

Yes!!! that what I got! Lots of citrus…my childhood girlfriend of nearly 50 years is a perfume newbie (wore Gucci Envy for years and before that Dior Poison) so I am expanding her horizons…thus far she really likes the Annick Goutal line and Jo Malones…when we went to the F Malle boutique in Manhattan she got two free samples (En Passant and Eau d”Hiver)…she liked them both until she saw the price of full bottles -LOL!

I am wondering if the top notes of citrus are long gone from your vintage bottle which is why it smells different…the same thing happened to my vintage Cristalle.

You could be right, of course! But it isn’t at all like I remember it, and I thought that before I put on my old stuff.

Or, my sense of “weird” is now blunted by so much weirdness, LOL…so I can no longer recognize Oyedo as weird 🙂

Thank you for the Phlur impressions. I applied more Hanami last night and “found” the fig.
How did they name the line? I associate Phlur with fleur, thank goodness, not phlegm 😉 .

Same here…I associate Phlur with the french word for flower and not phlegm either-LOL!

I also applied the Hanami last night to retest..still getting fig and hazelnut on my skin and with my wonky nose !

the three I am wearing today together are actually quite nice…I reads to my nose as a deep dark gourmand…tomorrow I may combine the other three from the line as I think they will go well together.

Ha – Friday’s community project is absolutely perfect for me. I reek havoc more often than not – at least on my own time (not so much at work). I’ll think of or read about a perfume and if I have it or something similar, on it goes. Later, I’ll add another and another. These tend to be primarily dabs or a very light spray so in the end, I don’t know that it’s as cacophonous as it sounds. However, they are often completely unrelated fragrances in notes as well as theme.

Today (so far) I am wearing Chanel No. 5 parfum and a spray of Carthusia Mediterraneo. And it’s not a bad combo!

Reeking in Fumerie Turque,Amber Narguile, and POTL Luctor Et Energo. They were randomly picked from a sample set collection, but complement each other. AN is gorgeous. The FT is very comforting on a cold morning. Does anyone know if it’s been reformulated? It’s one I would add to my long wishlist if it’s like My my sample, which is a few years old.

Reeking a little rose havoc today:
SL Sa Majeste la Rose dabbed on arms and neck, a small spritz of FM Une Rose on one hand, and a small spritz if LL Rose 31 on the other hand. The other 2 make the LL seem decidedly un-rosy. And even with my hand down, I can smell the FM.

    Vilhelm’s The Oud Affair today.
I see this one is sold out on Ari’s website, so I’m guessing it’s one of their more popular fragrances.
I can see why- it is rich and delicious. Even though it does not list the same notes as MFK’s Grand Soir, that’s what it reminds me of.

Wearing MFK Oud Satin Mood because I keep seeing instagram posts about it, and it got stuck in my brain.

It’s my last day in the office this week because we’re going to a friend’s wedding in Miami this weekend. Any suggestions for what perfume to wear to a formal, evening wedding in 85 degree, humid weather? My warm-weather perfume game has never been strong, so I’m oddly at a loss.

I think that’s an amazingly beautiful scent. Wish I had more than a tiny decant of it! I agree with Elisa, don’t think it would be too overwhelming for the wedding if you apply lightly, maybe a few hours beforehand. Otherwise something more light and floral, maybe a gardenia scent of some kind?

After reading Robin’s AG vanilla perfume review and the comments, I wanted something gourmand and warm. I’m wearing PG Indochine. It’s pretty much the opposite of reeking. I think it wears pretty close to the skin, and I’m pleasantly surprised that it has more incense than I remember. This will be an easy office friendly choice this fall and winter.

Funny, I don’t think of Indochine as gourmand. I get mostly ginger and sandalwood with a tiny dab of honey. It leans a bit masculine on me as well but I love it! I guess it is technically a gourmand.

Yeah, the ginger and honey make it gourmand to me. And I haven’t worn it very many times, but I remembered it as one of those wood pudding types or close enough. It didn’t disappoint! It’s a decant I recently pulled out with a bunch of others as fall options.

Good morning, NST. I’ve been absent for a while, just very tired, slightly sick (nothing at all serious or even nameable; just off), sleeping very late, so no time to write in the morning before work, and then busy and forgetful. Some days I didn’t even get to read NST! !!! Anyway, I’m back today for a few minutes, with Eric purring ecstatically on my lap and the stripey joblets in riot mode around me. I’m wearing Rose Musc and a black frock. Why, might you ask, am I cuddling a bright white Siamese kitten on a black lap? What an excellent, but unanswerable, question. Will I be able to wear the dress to work today? Probably not. I’m examining today, and a furry white skirt probably won’t give the best impression.

The Rose Musc is lovely (and suits my dress, which I must now go and change ‘cos I’ll never get Eric’s fur off properly while I’m inside the garment; bother!). It’s a very sophisticated, altered rose, almost medicinal, somehow. I enjoy this perfume greatly: the musks aren’t sweet or clean, but rather deep and growly, and the rose is lean and wild, not a pretty, soft garden rose at all. I didn’t expect to find such a hefty perfume in such a pretty gold bottle, but I’m pleased I tried it. Even more pleased I bought it.

Must dash off madly in all directions. Be well, all.

Iris is a note I love when dry, a bit austere and mysterious (thats why i love Iris nazarena…my sotd).

Iris Celadon has patchouli and chocolate notes- so not as austere or clear as, say, ISM or Bruma. It is defitely not a gourmand though.

I heard it is very similar to VC&A Moonlight Patchouli and I would agree, though I haven’t had the chance to do a side by side. I fell for Iris Celadon hard while I remember liking Moonlight Patchouli very much but not being instantly drawn to it.

After several weeks of having a caretaker government ( since the general election) we now have a new prime minister … A somewhat surprising outcome as we’ve got rid of the govt that has been in power for the past 9 years. So quite a bit of political havoc which has left me feeling more optimistic about the future….perfume havic in Santal Muscle ( had to leave that as it made me smile) . I had a fabulous border collie called Havoc. She had piercing blue eyes and was a soft grey and white and was funny and sweet natured. A friend took her for a walk one day and she got run over just in front of my house. He had her off the leash and she ran back across the road to get in our gate and I saw it happen in slow motion. She was a good dog though.

Last night I wandered through a DFS duty-free shop and sprayed myself with anything that caught my fancy. I had Coromandel on the left wrist, Black Perfecto on the right wrist, and Twilly in the crook of my elbow. The Twilly is still there this morning! I like a fragrance with longevity. I might have to get some of it when it eventually hits the discounters. It would be one of those “go anywhere, offend no one” scents in my cabinet.

I’m still working my way through the Olympic Orchids samples. Today will be Ballets Rouges, but after a dip in the ocean.

Ballets Rouges was the only OO sample out of about 7 that I really liked. I went through two samples and then bought a bottle when Doc Elly was undergoing a packaging change.

And the bottle smells weird, enough unlike my two samples that I don’t wear it. I don’t know why.

Decidedly no havoc in Pichola today, which is so so pretty but does not really go with the dark and stormy weather.

Speaking of dark and stormy, wouldn’t that make a nice combo after the cocktail? Maybe there is something someone know of that features rum, ginger & lime?

Started out with a good spritz of Tocade. Then, what the heck, not working today so a little FM Une Rose, Rosine La Rose, MPG Rose Opulente, and PdN Rose Piovine from dabber samples. (Plus a small dab of Dame Earth Mother hair oil just because I couldn’t wait to test it out!)

SotD = Oscar EdT by Oscar de la Renta

Typing that name makes me happy. I loved Oscar almost monogamously for more than a decade. I have an old bottle that smells slightly brown around the edges in the top notes then blooms beautifully. Not reeking havoc but could do with just a few big sprays of Oscar.

Now I’m off to wreak havoc in the garden. There are weeds to pull and potted plants that look thirsty.

I love that stuff. I have very powerful memories of smelling it in the 80s. I love the EDT, I love the parfum, and I love Esprit d’Oscar. Have you tried the Esprit? If not, I can send some your way. It’s a really nice modernization of the original that fully stands up on its own. I need to pull my bottle out – this is the best time of year to wear it.

And I have very powerful memories of wearing it in the late 70s and early 80s…it was definitely good stuff…haven’t sniffed it in ages and not sure if I want to….I know mals rants about Esprit and have considered a full bottle as it sells for dirt cheap online.

You smell lovely! i bought my first bottle of Oscar in the late 70s because I thought it was my ballet teacher’s signature scent which I adored (turns out it wasn’t and to this day I could curse myself for never asking her what she wore!)…nonetheless it was love at first sniff and I must have drained at least 5 or more bottles of it…a part of me does not want to sniff it again as I might become too nostalgic and melancholy…I was in high school when I wore it and a young waif with my whole life ahead of me (as opposed to the crotchety middle aged woman I am now 🙂 !!!)

Oscar, umm! Love the vintage stuff. My friend in highschool bought me a huge bottle for a birthday way back when. Brings back great memories! You smell amazing.

Sadly, the bottle I recently received from Fragrancenet was a more recent version. The bottle they pictured had the old school look that I remembered so I was a bit disappointed when I opened it. It smells ok, kinda perfumey; it’s just not vintage.

Oscar is memory in a bottle for me too.

A few fans of the old Oscar have commented here that they like Esprit d’Oscar better than the current version of Oscar. Might be worth a sniff for you.

Le Temps d’Une Fête for me today – a spring favourite. And I’m very cross to discover that my tablet no longer remembers all the perfume names I’ve typed over the last few years – upgrades don’t usually do that. Most annoying to have to type out Le Temps d’Une Fête from scratch 🙂

    SOTD is Heeley “Phoenicia”.

Notes are incense, labdanum, dates, raisin, oud, sandalwood, birch and vetiver.

So, I sprayed this on and thought, “Well, it’s a nice enough oud-and-rose combo, but I don’t need another one”. And then I looked up the notes and there’s not a drop of rose in it. This will be enough to warn true perfumistas off taking anything I say seriously, since I evidently can’t tell a rose from a date. :^)

So I’ll amend my initial thoughts to: it’s a nice enough oud-and-date, but I don’t need one. :^D

No reeking havoc for me today. Dentist visit for exam and cleaning, so just a spritz of California Rêverie. Need to decide if I want to just go ahead and have a filling replaced now or wait 6 or so months.

Besides, my husband did enough reeking for the week yesterday. He wanted to stop at Clyde’s for the sale. I think he sprayed five different things on himself – and I mean sprayed. We ended up at dinner at a favorite bistro nearby, where I made him go the restroom to wash some off. He then had escargot and steak. I had the couscous.

Thanks, all, for the anniversary wishes. He quite liked The Princess Bride and is now up to speed culturally. It was a big gap.

I know! What’s interesting is what you said about your husband loving it. Years ago, my company did a conference for those of us at mid-level. We had to fill out forms with some basic personal info that went into a book, so we could learn about each other. I was surprised by how many men put The Princess Bride as their favorite movie.

SL 5 O’Clock au Gingembre on this incredibly stressful and exhausting day. Why am I so stressed and exhausted? I don’t know. I have a lot of work, but that’s not all of it. Having to break in painful orthotics (that are supposed to alleviate the pain of what I am increasingly certain is a still-broken foot) surely isn’t relieving any stress.

The drydown of 5ocag smells a great deal like Tauer LADDM to me today. Am I delusional?

I’m sorry that you are in pain. I hope your docs can find a solution. At least you smell lovely. I own both scents and have never thought of them as similar. LdDM is dry, aromatic, green Amber. Five O’Clock is Earl Grey tea, honey, cinamon and ginger cookies. Both are excellent!

Re: PSL. I read too much about last year so here goes —

“PSL” was trademarked by Starbucks so referring to a non-Starbucks sourced pumpkin spice latte as PSL is wrong. The original PSL did not contain any pumpkin at all. After complaints from customers, Starbucks begun adding real pumpkin to the PSL syrup as of a year or two ago. I taste-tested pumpkin spice latte from Wegmans, Dunkin Donuts and Nordstrom. None of them were up to par with PSL.
