Thursday scent of the day 2/2

Posted by Robin on 2 February 2017 219 Comments

turkish delight

Happy Almost-Friday! Plus, Groundhog Day, World Wetlands Day, and Tater Tot Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Serge Lutens Rahät Loukoum.

Reminder: 2/3 will be Lemming Friday — you acquired a sample because you kept hearing about it (here or elsewhere), now you think you might just have to buy the bottle. A variation on a theme suggested by SheriG.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: pomegranate and pistachio Turkish Delight is $6.99 for a 12 oz box at Nuts.com.

Another sample that I finished: CSP Vanilla Abricot. Sweet and fruity. Reminds me strongly of Pez candies. Fun to wear and making me crave for ice cream right now. The perfume did not make it to my FB shopping list, but lunch time today will see for sure some PEACH FROZEN YOGURT!!!

Edy’s used to make a frozen yogurt, Death by Chocolate, the only chocolate frozen treat I like. (I’m a vanilla ice cream guy.)
They don’t make it any longer, and my scale rejoiced. LOLOLOL. 😀

This morning batch was actually vegan, I had only almond milk and earth balance in the fridge. They came out just as good as the regular ones!

I think I saw you mentioning that before so I am curious: is your grandfather actually making that chai, or are you using his recipe?

Yes, I think someone on NST asked me for the recipe but he has not given it up to me just yet. It is my father in law, he is visiting from Toronto.
So far, besides black tea, he uses fresh ginger, because when he doesn’t have fresh ginger he doesn’t make it. The rest of the ingredients I have to pry out of him. He wakes up early every morning and makes two servings one for him and one for me and brings it to me in a thermos. There is no sugar or milk, I have to add it if I want it.

Fleurs des Comores by MPG. A lovely tropical vanilla-floral. Sort of a mix of 3 parts Vanilia and 1 part Songes. A great pick-me-up at this time of year.

Tea is an Indonesian black tea, which is nice.

One part Songes sounds great! I reached for my bottle the other day because there is something about Songes that smells wonderful in cold weather. I plan on wearing it this weekend.

I always file it away in my own mind as Songes-light. The review in The Guide is spot-on, and prompted me to get it.

I couldn’t possibly comment as to that, I don’t drink a lot of coffee. The tea is nice, but it’s not quite a top notch Yunnan.

I’m drinking a decaffeinated Indonesian black tea I found recently. It’s the first decaf I’ve had that tastes as good as “real” black tea. I also drink decaf coffee, and there are plenty of those that don’t lose integrity in the decaffeinating process. Unfortunately that’s not the case with tea.

    Triple strength coffee.
    Norma Kamali Incense.
Acquired samples of Ceremony and Incense, Incense was an instant purchase upon wearing.
    Labdanum, frankincense, and myrrh.
Calming, yet energizing, though admittedly the latter might be the caffeine. 😉
    Carpe Diem. Peace.
Winter. Spring. Summer. Autumn. I shall enjoy what is placed before me.

Coffee brewed with 3 times the “recommended” amount of ground coffee.
If I go to a cafe, I request the largest cup with 2 shots of espresso added.
I am of Italian heritage, coffee and alcohol were served my entire life. Not PC in 2017, but removed any mystery from caffeine and alcohol.
They were just more, more, more in the banquet of life.
Both of my parents lived to their mid-90’s, full, rich lives.
        Thanks for asking!

Interestingly, Italy was very late to join in the phenomenon of binge drinking in the young (The Netherlands is sadly worldleader in this).
I’m not a great drinker, and not a particular fan of coffee, but I don’t think that only portraying these as dangers is a sensible approach.

Yes, allowing young people to experience caffeine and alcohol (in moderation) removes much of the taboo and “forbidden fruit ” allure.

I also drink dark roasts-xtra dark French roast for me these days. It’s true that darker roasts have less caffeine than lighter roasts, so espresso has less caffeine, but I like the taste of darker roasts better.

My DH is Italian and will often make expresso after dinner served with a tiny bit of Sambuca. Like you, he grew up with coffee and wine served at family dinners. But most importantantly with my late MILs fantastic cooking! They have lovely traditions. ????

Be good to your wetlands, and they’ll be good to you. This public service message brought to you by a lover of nature. And tater tots. 😀 And perfume: SOTD is the always lovely Coromandel.

I really like that pic of turkish delight — didn’t quite know what it was until I read below. Not a candy I have very often so maybe it’s time to pick some up. With the weekly cookies I’m making it’s kind of hard to justify any other sweet intake, but I’ll figure this out 😉

Still debating my SOTD, but thought I’d document my first wearing of Galop d’Hermes to dinner last night:

    Minute 1: oooh nice
Minutes 2-5: that is a surprisingly rank leather note
Minutes 6-30: okay, that is now a straight-up B.O. note
Minutes 31-90: B.O. is gone! But now really sweet and melon-y
Minutes 91 and on: maybe a little jasmine? But so much sweet melon

Verdict: this was WILDLY incompatible with my body chemistry, but at least it was an amusing experience. Still smelling it this morning, so I do have to give it a point for longevity.

Rose and leather sounded lovely to me, but I found those notes to be extremely fleeting. Basenotes lists quince as one of the notes – I guess that was the melon-y bit, which did not work for me. Money saved for sure!

I tried Galop the other week and thought it was really nicely done with no harsh or irritating off-notes. Personally, I would have liked the leather to be a bit bolder but i can see Galop as a possible replacement and alternative to Daim Blond if I ever finish that.

I’m with y’all. Eyedrops, floss & toothpicks, Tide pen/Shout wipes, tweezers, nail file, saline, nasal spray, tin of pills for various ailments, notepad & pens, lozenges, hand cream (with and without SPF), lip balm, kleenex, sunscreen, etc., plus everything else mentioned above.

I’m not a mom, I just carry a huge purse with everything I might possibly need so I’m always prepared. And I’ve come to the rescue for lots of people – strangers and friends alike.

I keep a small cosmetic bag in my purse too: face powder, go-with-everything lipstick, trial size mascara, travel comb, and a couple of small decants. Oh, and a disposable toothbrush. Prepared! You’ll make it through the day. 🙂

Total lemming over here… I received a fresh packet of samples last night and I’m testing PHI today. It is not love at first sniff, I hate to say. A bit harsh, with an accord that reminds me of one of the Strawberry Shortcake dolls (the real ones from the ’80’s). I think the Apricot one or maybe Lemon Meringue? Could be that I would like it better on a different day. I will try it again.

My youngest niece had the Strawberry Shortcake playing cards and they were ‘scratch and sniff’. Blueberry Muffin, lemon, cherry, etc.
We would play the match similar cards memory game, that I can’t recall the name of. LOL

In a cozy scent for my month of coziness…. today I am rubbed warm in No. 5 body oil. More than a skin scent, but not by much. It is a cold wet day outside. Hajusuuri sent me a very pretty spruce scented candle that I will light shortly once I begin my work.

Late yesterday, early today– it’s too hot to sleep, and also, there’s a party somewhere nearby that seems to include shrieking and loud exclaiming as required behaviour. They seem to be having a lot of fun, but it’s rather dull to have to suffer their activities from outside the group. I’ve made a pot of very hot tea and, the dear one being fast asleep still, I’ve sprayed myself with the first thing my hand lit upon in the dark. It’s turned out to be Misia, so I’m wafting about in my pjs and a potent cloud of violet-scented femininity. I don’t think I ‘ll stick with Misia for the rest of the day, but I’m loving it for a 4.30 a.m. companion: it’s soft and embracing, complex enough to be interesting, and its very girliness is soothing, so instead of being cross that I’m awake, I’m watching the end of the night pass into day and I’m peacefully thinking random thoughts. Be well, all.

I’m not sure anything can make me feel like a lady — my mother’s aunt laboured hard to make me into some model of ladylikeness that prevailed in her mind, and ended up sniffily announcing, “You’re too like your father to be refined!” I was about 10 at the time! But Misia does make me feel girly and young (well, younger, maybe) and it’s a bit of frilly, frivolous fun. Mind you, now I’ve had my morning shower, I’m dashing about in Cristalle EDT again– it’s crisp, cool, complex and slightly aloof. I’m never any of those things, but I aspire in that direction.

Hello, NST! Been working too many crazy hours to comment. In my head, I am wearing a lemming; read yesterday about Goodwill’s site and found a grab bag of samples including what looks like a half bottle of Fendi. (And sorry to whomever I beat out in the last minute on that auction) In case the prize turns out to be skunked, I didn’t want to use my last drops of Fendi today, so I wore Shiseido Murasaki, another from that era. I could count half my perfume cabinet as having been influenced by reading NST!

I’m writing from the GIGANTIC Opryland Hotel, now hosting the National Cattlemen’s convention (which is why I’m here). Was going to wear Le Galion Rose to today’s luncheon, when The CEO will be recognized for completing two 3-year terms on the advisory board… BUT I dropped my glass decant of MFK Lumiere Noire pour femme on the tile floor of the bathroom and broke it, so I’m wearing the dregs of that. Luckily, it was down to about a milliliter, or 1.5ml, and also luckily, I bought a FB last month. It’s maybe a little formal for lunch, but whaddareyagonnado.

I’m imagining you dropping to the floor and rubbing yourself in perfume and shards of glass 😉

(Incidentally, I recently wanted to get the last few drops from a sample whose sprayer had broken and came up with the brilliant idea of breaking it to get to the juice. I would not recommend doing this. I had tiny bits of glass on me the next day, because yes, I rubbed what I could salvage all over myself. My bathroom probably still has bits of glass the size of grains of sand here and there.)

L’heure bleue over the almost astringent herbal scent of my current body oil. Someway or another L’heure bleue has become my go-to everyday scent. I would not have believed it had someone told me this upon purchase, it’s pretty distinctive, but while almost all other fragrances I own will on occasion feel too much or too little, L’heure bleue always delivers.

Had a rollicking good time with old girlfriends at our hometown restaurant last night. I had the famous fried chicken, which was good but not as juicy as it normally is. And, yes, a couple of bourbon drinks (we were there a long time.) I’m the newbie in the relationship, in that I’ve been friends with them for about 48 years. They’ve all known each other for about 55 years. One woman sells jewelry and gave us each heart necklaces with our joint birth year in roman numerals. So sweet!

I am feeling cheerful this morning since the plumbing repair only cost two bell jars in perfumemath, so I put on about 10 sprays of Infusion d’Iris. I like the Absolue better, and maybe Hermes Hiris even more than Id’I, but I haven’t got any Hiris and my Absolue is a rollerball decant and I wanted to spray. There is supposed to be snow/freezing rain tonight but I have tickets to Sting and I’m going if I have to skate there and back.

Now at work, in Hermes Eau de Mandarine, which I am actually liking quite a bit. 16 degrees here, radio says “Feels like 4.” This winter has not even been that hard here as winters go, but I am so ready for it to be done….

    Thursday!

    1) SOTD: Lemming- Stash by SJP, which I have worn the majority of fall and winter weekends and some weekdays! It is truly wondeful and unisex.

    2) On the experiment with Niagen and revised diet: 1) I have long days- 12-24 hours is not unusual- and I am finding that the Niagen seems to help with maintaining energy level through my long days- commute+work+ gym. We still have to see for a full week so that it is not a placebo effect
Revised diet: Not enough calories in the middle of the day. I am finding that this is causing me to ‘binge’ at the evening meal, which is not good! Yesterday, dinner was bread, butter, cheese and wine. Lovely tasting and initially satisfying, but then sat like lead the rest of the evening, made my GERD symptoms flare up, and made sleeping uncomfortable. So will be eating carb sides at lunch, like rice or potatoes, along with veggies and protein so that rest at night is better again.

Lemming in Cuir de Lancôme which I heard about here. Dabbed, it is only just barely there after 6 hours but I like it while it lasted and I’m not a huge leather person. But certainly glad I tried it and will use up my sample.

Yeah, I dab that one too. It’s not too strong a leather, but it’s definitely leather. Wonder how many bottles the readers of this blog have bought in total. It’s got to be a big number.

SOTD is SJP Stash, which is a great everyday, offend no one, unobtrusive perfume. Can’t say I was lemming it, but I don’t have anything similar, so I picked up a nice gift set before the holidays for super cheap. To me, it fits right in there with Bvlgari (Original) Omnia as far as wearabilty is concerned.

Had a dental appointment this am and didn’t want to blast the hygienist’s nasal passages while I white knuckled a “deep cleaning.” Is there anything more horrifying than that term? The only redeeming part of the visit was a very attractive dentist who broke my heart when he told me I need to have a crown removed, have the filling replaced and the tooth resculpted the. cough up some change for another crown. Sigh. Such is life and once again, I’m blaming my parents since I’m pretty sure I got the worst DNA from both sides. I DO take good care of my teeth, but I think my teeth hate me. It’s always the parents fault! ????

Scent twins! And yes, dental work is always nerve wracking and so costly. I got the good Caribbean genes from Dad and fluoride treated water from NYC, so I have been told my teeth are like pearls. Of course, this is right before being told I have a crack in my back tooth!

Seems to me a lot of dental issues are entirely genetic, thus home care doesn’t always play the biggest role. I’d be tempted to get a 2nd opinion on the crown replacement.

I find most dental work to be excruciating (from anxiety, not pain) but don’t recall the deep cleaning being so bad. I think I was probably numbed, though (which is another thing that causes anxiety.)

Bummer on the whole thing, but congrats for getting through the morning!

I hate to deal with dental issues (I had my unfair (!!!) share of those and, trust me, there are much more horrifying words than “deep cleaning” 😉 ), so I fully sympathize with your ordeal. But at least you smelled great!

I can commiserate on having bad teeth…. I take care of my teeth religiously but I still have had to have several root canals and so many crowns I can’t remember which teeth are real anymore! I second the advice to consider a second opinion on the crown or any major dental work unless you have a dentist you really know and trust. It’s usually not expensive and it’s so worth it, I have gotten some second opinions that are wildly different.

A bit of blue sky here this morning, very exciting after days of awful weather. Guns N Roses played at the stadium here last night in pouring rain. I didn’t go, but am looking forward to hearing from colleagues this morning about how the concert was and how they survived the rain.
Le Galion’s La Rose for me today. I’m wearing a dress today with abstracf blobby red flowers that might be roses

This has been the strangest summer in my memory. Even now, despite the sun up here, the wind can be cold, but we’ve had nothing like the miserable time you Wellingtonians have been suffering.

Hey, on the catching up front, I might not make that conference in Wellington. I over-thoughtbthe paper, dithered gently about the approach, got busy with other things and shelved it, and missed the deadline. I’ve written to ask if I can submit a late abstract, but the silence is both disapproving and deafening…I’ll just come down sometime anyway.

    SOTD is Pacifica Island Vanilla.

Tater Tot Day, eh? I can’t help but smile when I have tater tots because it reminds me of a high school teacher who told our class one day, “I think the lunch lady’s sweet on me: she always gives me extra tater tots.” ????

SOTD= Chergui because I just felt like I needed its comfort.
I am overdue to sample this one anyway and the perfumechat podcast pushed me into
action this week! I wish they would do a video /vlog of their perfume battles!

Btw: Angela I’d you are interested I did some research on Park & Tilford ( old bottle collections post of yours from last week) tying to find the notes description for No.3,
Wellll, THAT lead me to Ralliet, Which led me to Russian perfumes, which led me to…..
Jean Claude Elena, who made perfume No.1 and POSSIBLY NO.3 , INTERESTING NAMING CONVENTIONS wouldn’t you agree? 😉 He may be the author of No.3. Also Houbigant is mentioned as they were all associates w/ Ralliet during that time ( early career).
I can send you my compiled history if you are curious. They were all partners. Imagine!!
My mom bought hers at the Murphy’s 5 & dime and remembers clearly all the
Flying insects following her to the bus stop. I never did find the perfume description.
To my knowledge No.3 was simply rebottled w/their name and logo on it, solely imported and was not their creation. Lmk if you want to see more. Fascinating history!!

I bought a sample of Arquiste Nanban about a year ago after so many people here talked it up. I only wore it once, as it went really sour on my skin – though the spots where it was on fabric smelled good. I’m wearing it today. The sourness is gone and it smells lovely.

I guess this is a good lesson in patience. There are a lot of perfumes that go sour on me. Perhaps I need to hold on to them and test at a later date…

SOTD = Hermes Kelly Caleche EDP

I am continuing with Month of Roses. This was one of the first perfumes I bought since falling into the rabbit hole. I have eked out the very last drops able to be sucked out by the aromizer. I was originally going to wear Kelly Caleche parfum extrait but it does not contain rose!

Pet peeve: Fellow commuters who hum or whistle the friggin entire length of the commute. Why why why do they always end up sitting behind me or within earshot? In the hierarchy of annoyances. it ranks 2nd worst. #1 is sick people who insist on coughing and/or sneezing without covering their nose/mouth; #3 is malodorous people.

Forgot to mention I had tater tots today before I even knew it’s Tater Tots Day! In the cafeteria, the potato hash that normally comes with an omelet tastes horribly disgusting and I informed the cook of my thoughts several months ago. He was amenable to the substitution.

Really?! You consider an offense-by-sound to be worse than an offense-by-smell? 🙂 What kind of perfumista are you?!!

But jokes aside, isn’t using your headphones to listen to something on your phone to escape the annoying sound effects easier than to avoid an unpleasant odor?

I need to re-visit Kelly Caleche: I remember that it didn’t work for me when I tested it several years ago but since then my nose definitely got “more sophisticated” – so maybe I’ll like it more now?

Practically the only times I use my headphones is when I’m on a plane or when I am watching a show on my iPad. My ears are so sensitive to whistling it feel like someone stuck a knife in there and twisted – ouch!
