Happy Almost-Friday! And RIP Mary Tyler Moore. What fragrance are you wearing?
I am wearing 4160Tuesdays Doe in the Snow, which they describe as a vintage fruity chypre stirred with an icicle. Great fun, and a perfect fragrance for Mary Richards. You can find a review at The Candy Perfume Boy.
Reminder: 1/27 will be Sci-Fi Friday — wear a fragrance that transports you to some alternative futuristic scenario, or that matches a favorite Sci-Fi novel or movie. Suggested by Solanace, who mentioned Strange Invisible Perfumes Fire and Cream as a cologne a cyborg might enjoy wearing.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Is it Winter or Spring? I’m not sure Mother Nature knows this week? 🙂
SOTD: Tocca Cleopatra.
HARK! Friday approaches!
It is winter here. If it’s spring there, I’ll be stopping by later 😉
It’s dropping back into the 30’s this weekend…..was in the 70’s earlier in the week! 🙂
I like that one, very distinctive. Plus those bottles are so gorgeous, aren’t they?
I love the Tocca bottles! And I wish every perfume maker made their juice available in the variety of sizes that Tocca does . . .
YES! I have the little rollerball set. Was able to buy a set of 3 for $15! I’m very willing to pay that, and then pay for a FB if I love it! 🙂
I have a 20ml spray bottle of Colette, and it’s just perfect – I wish I could buy everything in that little bottle . . .
Feeling great in my last few drops of Kenzo Air. I sure wish they would bring it back.
Me too! Hope you can find another bottle.
RIP Mary Tyler Moore.
Inspired by Robin’s review of wood pudding, I am wearing Boyfriend which is remarkably similar to Organza Indecence. The body cream is fantastic.
The body cream is so good!
So, so jealous of your Boyfriend. (Ha!) Ugh, I should have bought five bottles when it was cheap and plentiful.
If only I hadn’t thrown out my bottle (I don’t even throw out receipts; what was I thinking?!), I could have shared. *sigh*
Yes! Share your Boyfriend with me! 😉 Such perfume perversion on this site…
A crime against perfume humanity!
We are scent cousins today Robin – I am in 4160 Tuesdays Dirty Honey.
Low silage, but somewhat foreign and completely filthy on my skin.
I can see this being worn by a perverted android in one of those unfortunate sci-fi-sort-of-soft-core pornography movies that were once churned out in abandon for HBO and Showtime.
Jeesh, I guess I missed that genre completely. That’s what happens when you’re too cheap to spring for HBO, I guess.
lol
I remember babysitting as a teen in the 80’s and being amazed that they were allowed to show THAT on TV.
LOL! I will have to find my Dirty Honey, I am pretty sure I have some.
I have never seen one of those, but I love the idea!
I originally read the description of Dirty Honey and got in my head the idea that it sounded too floral. However, “completely filthy” makes me think I need to give it a shot!
Completely filthy? I’m sold.
Count me in too!
I’ve been curious about Doe in the Snow. Haven’t sniffed it yet, but I’m eager to. I love What I Did On My Holidays.
I started the day in Misia edt, but it disappeared so fast that I switched over to Cuir de Russie edp within 2 hours. It’s in heavy rotation right now.
how do you find the new Cuir de Russie EDP?
I love it. For me, it’s more plush than the edt, maybe a touch more floral, but isn’t quite as rich as the parfum, which is sometimes a bit much for my everyday taste. I’ve been wearing the hell out of the edp in a way I have never been moved to with the other two. It gives me hope for some of the other edps I haven’t tried yet.
I liked the Cuir de Russie EDP better than the EDT too. Not convinced by the new Sycomore though.
That’s too bad. Maybe it will grow on you. I was bummed by the edp of 31 Rue Cambon. You win some, you lose some, I guess. I have my fingers crossed for La Pausa and Misia. Are there any other new edps you are happy with?
SOTD same as yesterday: Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile from a sample I got at Sak’s. Love it!
Such an under appreciated gem, I love it too, I never tried the edt before it was discontinued, but I’m happy with the edp.
I sniffed both and there was SUCH a difference. EDP had so much more “bass” and edt was all treble.
To answer your yesterday question, the sublime is much less iris, more orange blossom and warm musky…something? It’s very very nice and more “me” than than the regular, email me by clicking on my user name, and I can send you a little…
Oh, that’s so kind. I’m in Canada, though, so you might not want the bother. I will email you and you can decide.
I’M IN CANADA TOO!
1000 by Patou, lovely and classical. Tea is a lovely Yunnan based Earl Grey. The weather is cold and rather windy, but there is some sun.
I cannot believe we had one single day of sun and it’s gone already!
its cold and rainy here too…
We had sun yesterday and it was very lovely
1996–my ultimate wood pudding–for the second day in a row
Hmmm. I have a sample of this one somewhere. I’ll have to dig it up. I love the idea of wood pudding. Not sure I quite get what that means yet, but I’m intrigued by the idea of finding a favorite wood pudding anyway. ????
Resampling Mona di Orio Vetyver. Once I get past the initial stumpwater note it’s really nice, but that’s probably not gonna happen on a regular basis.
Time and her death have given me new insights into how much MTM (and Marlo Thomas) influenced my view of women and my role in the world. So grateful.
Same here!
Ditto. MTM was an icon of my junior high school years. I’m so sad about her passing.
Me too! I used to like to think of myself as a bit like her, and took it as a great compliment years back when a friend compared me to her…single career girl in the city, great apartment with a happening social life.
Australia Day here but far too hot for any outdoor activities for me. I stayed in my aircon watching a few episodes of Anno 1790 (love!) and doused myself in Hiram Green Voyage, which is another seemingly cool-weather frag I prefer in the heat.
That was a great show, wish they had done another season.
You smell great!
Texas is back to more typical winter weather, being cool and cloudy, so I’m wearing Jungle L’Elephant. I love this stuff in the winter, but I rarely wear it because of the vanilla drydown.
Jungle l’Elephant is fab, but I can rarely wear it due to the heat/humidity. Is vanilla one of your least liked ingredients? Or do you like vanilla scents in general but just don’t care for this the vanilla in this one?
I don’t care for vanilla in general, especially if that is the most prominent note. I don’t mind it too much if it stays in the background, but so many otherwise wonderful scents have the vanilla up front, or have it be the most prominent note in the drydown. I can’t wear Bvlgari Black for this reason, much as I like the initial scent.
Ditto!!
Got a lot done this morning already: Made homemade scones with my little monkey. Most of the sugar and flour ended up on the floor..
Mailed the freebie samples
went to Dunkin
Layering Dame Rose de Mai with Gardenia. I have a few in this set so if anyone has any layering suggestions let me know.
Tea Homemade Chai
Today is India’s Republic Day
You smell great and your home smells yummy.
What is your scone recipe? Many American scones are very sweet and fruity.
are you stereotyping us Americans 😉
225g of flour
1 packet of baking powder (one spoonful)
30g of sugar
50g of butter
150ml of milk
salt to taste ( i just added a spoonful)
mix until sticky, I use a muffin pan to bake to they rise up.
200 C for 12 minutes. (but check)
I even did the metric system for you 🙂
I am American, but had the best scones in England! I can’t find them here, so I need to try to make my own. You are so discerning about your baked goods, that I knew you would have an authentic recipe 🙂 .
Thank you very much! This looks good.
ohh! HA! you are american…do you want me to convert this back to our system?
I learned these scones from a french friend and she serves it with clotted cream and strawberry preserves
Thanks- I have metric measures. Clotted cream- yum!!
Fortnum & Mason scones – delightful!
I’m not American, so very helpful, thanks! Im going to make these tomorrow with my little monkey, as you’ve inspired me! it’s our morning together on Fridays.
let me know how it comes out.
My french friend uses a hand mixer but I just beat it by hand..so whatever works for you
Oh thank you! I’ll make them with our littles. Love clotted cream and jam..❤
Finishing a sample of V&R Flowerbomb. I really needed something sweet and strong for another super busy and grey day. Second cup of coffee and waiting anxiously for Friday to arrive.
Almost here!
Looking forward to reading all the articles on Ms. Moore as she was a game-changer and inspiration to many women. I might even buy the 1st season of her show to (hopefully) be encouraged at how far we’ve come!
SOTD: Volutes edt
and, back to the rain… 🙁
Only recently sampled Volutes. It’s lovely.
It’s so lovely. Glad you got to sample it!
The Dyptique sample sale should be in Feb. again this year and if so, I plan to go early to try and get a bottle of this 😉
Oh? *raises eyebrows* I wonder if they’ll have the 2015 Essences Incensees at a cut rate. My recollection is that it’s a B&M sale, though?
They might! I purchased mine there last year, not sure they’ll be looking to offload more.
Worth checking out though!
If you have Hulu, you can stream the first three seasons of the show. So much fun!
I went on Amazon and the first season is sold out!
Can’t wait to get this!
You smell great! I’ve been wearing Volutes edt the past few nights.
It’s near perfect. Very well done scent..
Thanks!
If you have a DVR it’s almost certain MTM airs on one of the channels in your cable lineup and is available to record. I’ve been DVRing MTM once I realized that and watch it occasionally (as well as Bob Newhart – the original.)
My parents watched MTM when I was a kid, so I already knew her, but really fell in love with her on The Dick Van Dyke Show, which played on Nick at Nite in the 80s. As of a few months ago The Dick Van Dyke show was available on Netflix.
I love Mary Tyler Moore, always have, and am happy so many others are celebrating her (usually I just feel like a weirdo for watching a show from the 70s in 2017 😉 )
Wisteria Hysteria today, applied liberally so I can catch the metallic hum under the flowers. I think this is what a green house in a space ship would smell like on a good day.
Love you’re discription of this!, sounds intriguing.
Thanks for the description meredifay! Sounds fun.
I totally get this!
RIP Mary Tyler Moore ???? I watched a touching interview with Dick Van Dyke this morning, who looks great at 91.
I’m probably going to fail the Friday project. I have a bottle (Poudre de Riz) that LOOKS like a cyborg, though. I described it as Darth Vader’s baby.
SOTD Suleko Djelem which smells like a soft swirl of celadon and cream for this dreary, rainy day.
Too funny! Or little storm trooper eggs.
Haha! Yes. And the bottle totally doesn’t match the girly rosy powder scent.
I don’t have anything for Friday either
I’m sure you’ll smell great anyway ????
Everything by Thierry Mugler would also count simply because of the bottles, I think. And/or the name (Alien!).
I do have an Agel mini and some Muse samples, and other scents I could stretch to fit. Just not sure I have the energy for that kind of imagination these days, coupled with sci-fi not really being my genre.
Ya, some community projects stretch beyond the bounds of my imagination. This is one of them 😉
YSL Cinema. Ok, does the bottle look sort of like the front of a Borg cube?
Cinema itself is too beautiful and emotional for the Borg.
RIP Mary Tyler Moore. Watching a montage of scenes from the show reminded me of how far women have advanced in the workplace, but yet how much some things remain the same.
The bottle DOES look like a very glam Borg cube! And the notes sound too lush for the Borg collective.
I did not like Doe in the Snow, but I didn’t review it and now I can’t remember why I didn’t like it. Maybe it was more that it was inoffensive but unmemorable, something like that? Shrug.
It is sunny and heading toward mid-50sF today, and I am longing for Actual Winter. (Please, nobody throw tomatoes! I LIKE winter and we haven’t had enough of it.) Wearing a sample of Chanel Beige, which I find also inoffensive and unmemorable, but pleasant.
TBH, I’m with you on wanting a bit more of winter. It’s January. It ought to be cold.
I agree, I love cold winter weather.
I don’t mind winter either, but if it’s going to be winter, there needs to be snow! Just getting rain and some chilly days feels like a cop-out and not like a REAL winter here at all. It’s a bit depressing because having just one good blizzard will make putting up with the cold weather for so long worthwhile. And then I’ll totally be ready to enjoy warmer weather afterwards.
Yes, exactly. It’s TIME for cold and snow… and then we’ll be ready for spring when it’s time for that.
SOTD is Chanel Boy….it was a sample with a gift from a Christmas present, and it’s lovely at first, but disappears within a few hours, so disappointing. It would be ok for one pretty snowstorm on the weekend, then cleared up before Monday morning rush hour, other than that, I hate winter. Bring on Spring!
SOTD is PdE Tabac Tabou for a cloudy day. It’s not cool and it’s not hot. It’s not humid or dry. It’s in between and no where in particular.
On the other hand, TT is a “right here, right now” kind of scent. It’s grounding and fortifying. It’s cozy and bold. I don’t get any tobacco, just warm animalic muskiness with hint of a flower peeking through occasionally.
I have a bit of a headache after a hellacious day at work yesterday and now I feel like a wolf cub all cozied up with my litter mates in a snug den lined with dirt, remnants of crushed leaves, an odd wildflower, and bits of fur.
Probably not a scent for everyone ????
I loooooooove TT and I really need to find my sample. You smell great!
I love your wolf den description! TT always makes me feel beautifully feral — I love its combination of lovely narcissus and sun-warmed fur.
Another big TT fan here!
I tested Tabac Tabou the other day and felt not up to the intellectual task of understanding and enjoying it. Your description makes me think I was on the mark! 🙂
You smell wonderful. I’m at Mom’s and the weather is perfect for TT, but I forgot to pack my bottle and am not sure if my decant is here somewhere. It is just one of my favorite golden, cuddly, great for yard work on a cool day scents.
The 2016’came out very late in 2016. I still have some of the 2015 from the bottle I split!
Oh, I never noticed the 2016 was out. Are there noticeable differences or are they pretty close?
RIP, MTM. She was the role model that showed 12 year old me that a single woman could live alone, have a rewarding career, and live a happy life. No small thing. Add to that her wonderful comedic talents, her great against-type performance in Ordinary
People, and her work on diabetes awareness and animal welfare, and well, that’s a life well lived.
SOTD today is SSS Tabac Aurea.
You smell so good.
she was an amazing woman!
Beautifully said.
Hear hear. MTM was an inspiration to me.
Yes to all of that, including Tabac Aurea! It’s wonderfully affirmative to women who live non-conventional lives. I feel like women are still judged, pitied, or made to feel deficient for choices that are outside of what had been a traditional woman’s role.
It’ raining so heavy! Wearing Shalimar and thinking of the cool elegance of Anna Karina as Godard’s Alphaville Natasha.
you smell lovely!!!
Scent twins! I’m wearing Shalimar also 🙂
Yesterday – Husband: Did you know there’s a glowing orb in the sky!?
Today – Husband: IT IS SO DARK OUTSIDE! WHY DID I MENTION THE SUN, IT’LL NEVER COME BACK!
Seriously though, it was ridiculously dark outside this morning. Driving in to work felt like I was driving at 6 pm at night. The darkness was so eerie.
I’m in 31 RC and given it’s structure and the way it makes people straighten their backs a bit – I can see this as being a scent in some sort of sci-fi. Not sure in what capacity though.
Sounds like Jean-Luc Picard in a bottle, to me. 😉
I hope the sun returns to you soon!
Oh my gosh, yes! I could totally see him wearing this! Mostly for diplomatic meetings, but also on off days having a drink and chatting with Guinan (Goldberg’s character).
I’m thinking a high-ranking civilian/politician that has to deal with intergalactic military forces on a regular basis.
Ah yes, I can see that too. And for some reason I see you in that role very easily – maybe because you do something…. similar already?
I was also thinking maybe a scent diffused by androids to the human populace it controls for “work environments” as a way of controlling morale…..
Lumiere Noire pour femme. Mmmmm.
You may attract too many alien life forms seeking the source of the beautiful scent 😉 .
Tobacco Vanille Tom Ford.
I think other people like it on my skin more than I do. Hhhmmm….
Robin, your perfume reminds me of the name of my Mother’s favorite lipstick- Cherries in the Snow. Love that name.
Carpe Diem. Peace. 🙂 (:V)
My mom used to wear that lipstick- a perfect creamy blue red. I have to swing by the drugstore and pick up a tube.
I like Tobacco Vamille- it’s very, very sexy, but up close you get that green tobacco note at first, so it can be a bit much. Key is tiny drops all over.
Yes, I have found people find it attractive on me, but as Suzy Q notes below, it doesn’t evolve much.
Kind of like someone who keeps the same haircut for 30 years, change is good ! LOL 😉
Cherries in the Snow is a favorite red of mine, too.
Regarding Tobacco Vanille, I love it on a friend but I rarely wear my decant. I like the way it smells but it’s too linear: I get tired of smelling it after a few hours.
Exactly !
It is a great name!
My mother wore that too (along with Revlon Red)!
SotM = Theorema from the charmingly geometric mini bottle that landed in my mailbox yesterday.
NST, I am a true believer. This one’s a keeper. Citrus and spice and everything nice, but elevated to polished perfection. The notes listed on fragrantica remind me that sometimes what looks like a mess of everything-but-the-kitchen-sink can be beautifully orchestrated. The basenotes pyramid is a much better representation of Theorema I think.
Sad but sweetly nostalgic as I think of MTM and remember sleepovers with my sister at our grandparents’ home. My grandparents were indulgent, so we kids often feel asleep on their couch during the MTM show, Barnaby Jones, M*A*S*H, and others. The Carol Burnett Show was a favorite that was on early enough in the evening that we could stay awake. Such fun.
Theorema is perfect
Okay, I am officially adding Theorema to my ever growing list of to trys.
I think many grandparents are indulgent and I guess that’s as it should be, I know mine were. My own mother was so strict when I was growing up and now I’m amazed with what she lets my kids get away with! ???? She recently sent me a text that read “When I grew older I thought the best part of my life was over and then I was handed my first grandchild and realized the best part of my life had just begun.”☺️
Thanks for sharing that touching anecdote.
That’s a sweet sentiment. 🙂 Grandparents made my childhood magical.
Tiffanie- ok now I’ve got to track down and try Theorema!
Madtown girl- thanks for sharing that! Lovely and nostalgic – and exactly how I feel about my grands. ???? So much more fun than anyone ever told me.
My grandfather used to watch the Muppets with the grandkids. My grandmother was definitely home but was always busy doing something else.
I’m wearing FM L’Eau d’Hiver for the winter planet of Gethen in The Left Hand of Darkness, one of my all time favourite novels. I have to say that although I smell good, this scent is too nice for the bitter cold of Gethen – Zagorsk might be a better fit.
Zagorsk sounds like some sort of planet in a sci-fi novel already.
Well, Russia IS basically a different planet 🙂
LOL, this is true!
Hmm, maybe I’ll look for that book.
It’s one SF book that I also recommend to readers who usually don’t like this genre. It doesn’t have much to do with space ships and everything to do with gender and society and relating to the Other. I guess it’s no longer as revolutionary as it was back then, but it’s a classic for a reason.
Sounds like another good book to try -thanks.
And I have the FM on my to try list. It sounds like a fragrance for all kinds of occasions!
It is a great book. More for those who like literary SF, but I don’t know anyone who thinks it’s not worth reading. And L’Eau d’Hiver is versatile and very nice.
1) When I finally moved out west, the first thing I did when I got my studio apartment in NW Portland and was walking to my Americorps assignment was to throw my (beanie) hat in the air. RIP, MTM!
2) Continuing Sci Fi week, I am in JM Tudor Rose and Amber. I think that the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) would wear this, being a bit of a dandy. Having gone through so many time periods, he would just care about what smelled pretty!
Nice idea!
I love that…throwing your hat in the air.
Tenth Doctor = Sigh
In Timbuktu today, which I really love in chilly weather.
And in all other weather.
I never finished Dune, but maybe this is what they’d wear under those funny suits. . .
You smell wonderful!
Hi Twin!
We smell nice! 🙂
In Costume National 21 since the wood pudding article reminded me to wear it
You smell really good!
Yay!
Testing Angel Muse. Meh… I really don’t care for gourmands. This one is fine–I’m getting something like vanilla cream which is not in the notes and wood, but I have Womanity already (woody gourmand in common) which is an old friend, even if we aren’t all that close. . .
I love the scent of vanilla, cooking with vanilla, and the pickle seller in Crossing Delancey! But I just don’t love wearing vanilla.
Watched several episodes of Mary Tyler Moore show with my husband last night. Highly recommend first episode of season 3 especially. Some of Ted Baxter’s expressions are dead ringers for my husband’s, which made the gormless gaffs even funnier. Goodness we had a laugh!
I never liked vanilla either. Then someone changed in me, and I now find it delicious. Funny how that works.
Was it a perfume that someone wore?
I think it was a sample of Orchidee Vanille that started a change if heart.
Me too on this. I find it very cozy and comforting now to wear.
For me it was Hiram Green Voyage.
It was a great cast with great characters. I guess that’s why they all had spinoffs (Rhoda, Phyllis, Lou Grant…) I also love the episodes with Sue Ann Nivens at the center. Her throwback femininity made a great foil for Mary.
Will also add that Angel Muse grew on me slowly – a dab here, a dab there, then a spray, then multiple sprays, then a bottle bought. I don’t think of it as either vanilla-centric or gourmand, though. Angel just seems like its own universe, lol. And probably as fitting as anything for sci-fi week.
Okay. Okay. I’ll give it another whirl!
Yay almost-Friday! I’m in Fate Woman today, which is a shape-shifter on me. Some days it smells like Chamade on steroids, some days it smells like beignets, today it smells like baby powder sprinkled over chanterelles. Sort of wishing I’d picked something else…
Fate is all baby powder on me.
Back to Black by Killian is another baby powder on me as well..
I also get baby powder with Fate. Atomic Fireball baby powder.
baby powder on chanterelles… I laughed out loud!
Me 2
That’s an awfully evocative description.
No. 5 L’eau, which is quickly becoming my new go-to.
Spritzed this on myself on last time I was at the mall. I did not expect to like it much… Boy was I wrong!
I really like it. It’s just so soft, pretty and easy to wear. I also like that it came in a 30 ml bottle.
You smell lovely!
I think you wore it earlier this week…? We have great taste!
Cocoa Rose again today…because I’m feeling lazy.
I remember when the networks used to do these long trailers for all the new shows before the beginning of the season. And I distinctly remember the one for the Mary Tyler Moore show. I don’t think I was consciously aware of her influence but my guess is she played a big part in the attitude I had about being independent. Her portrayal was so realistic about being young, not fully confident and growing into a position of strength and confidence.
And she was such an incredible comedian.
Who is it by?
Smell Bent. Sample from a generous NSTer.
Turning my attention to an exploding collection of samples/decants received from generous and wonderful NST perfume buddies. This morning, Vetiver pour Elle. This is stunningly beautiful and can’t remove nose from wrist!
Mmm…I love that one!
I was in the mood for something light and feminine, so I went with Narcisco Rodriguez For Her EDT. Probably not very sci-fi, but maybe one of the sexy lady robots on Westworld would wear it . . .
Cuir de Russie, Chanel.
Nice!
In DSH Chinchilla today. I think it might be a bit too animalistic for the office 🙂 but so far no one has complained. We have a woman here that showers in Miss Dior (sadly the recent formulation) – you can literally smell it 15 minutes after she passed you in a hallway. I guess compared to that, my 5 sprays of Chinchilla is nothing.
I can relate. There is a manager in our office who wears, I’m guessing La Vie et Belle. You can smell it everywhere, I can’t even smell myself. Problem is, her friend walked by me this morning and guess what? She was wearing the same fragrance! Aaarrghhh!
Oh dear god. Sorry for your suffering! LOL
La Vie est Belle is a weapon of mass destruction.
La Vie est Belle is like Angel – if you pass by someone wearing it, it also sticks to you.
Clarissa could you describe your take on Chinchilla for me? Thanks!
It is exactly as the description – honey musk animalistic. I would give it a 5 on the animalistic scale (Salome by Papillon is 10 in my book, Musk Tonkin by PdE is 9). I sprayed it around 7 am, this is noon and it is still going pretty strong. First 30 minutes I get pretty strong ambergris, which than settles into musk and flowers. Quite nice.
Sampling some of the Jo Loves scents today. So far nothing is really catching my interest. They are pleasant and very much in line with her previous creations for the Jo Malone line.
Do you happen to have Smoked Plum & Leather? I’ve been curious about that one.
Yes, and I’m testing it right now. Starts off mostly smoky, then dries down into the plum & leather notes. I am liking it better as it dries down. No discernible sillage but I only put on one big spritz.
Thank you! I might actually like this.
SOTD = Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt
I haven’t been out since this morning but I think it’s in the high 40s / low 50s out there, transitional weather when we should be in the dead of winter!
It’s bad enough that people are on their cell ohones constantly but couple that with those who insist on using it but can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, you’ve got a disaster waiting to happen. Yesterday this guy was yapping on his cell phone while hordes of us were descending stairs to get down from the train platform. He was walking really slowly and decided to stop short so he can hear better! It took great will power to not yell out “Get off the damn phone, you moron!”
Honestly, this is what drives me most nuts about modern civilization: people act as though they are alone in the world. If you need to stop or attend to something else while in the flow of traffic, PULL OVER!
I’m big on pulling over. Do it all the time. It just seems like the right way to behave in a sea of fast moving people.
I actually don’t even answer my cell phone, hands free or otherwise, while I am driving.
Agreed. There was just the one time that texting while driving (she was stopped at a light) saved someones life because had she turned when her left arrow turned green, there would have been a head on collision between her and a car that ran a red light.
I love that one!
Do you ever layer it with any of her other scents? Her website recommends Peony & Blush Suede for a warmer feel, and I’m curious about that combo.
I haven’t layered it with anything yet. I think I have a decant of the peony from a swap but if I couldn’t find it, I will acquire one from my sister!
Arrghhh. I had a couple of those experiences last week. Especially a young woman getting on the subway while looking at her phone. She was moving sooo slowly. I had to push past her. But there’s a lot of the phone-obsessed slow movers going down and up subway stairs. I don’t get it.
My husband would have barked at the man.
And the texts are probably stupid stuff. The ones I deliberately get close to are the ones walking on the wrong side of the street while texting and if they got annoyed at me for THEM bumping into me, I just pointedly look at their cell phone and keep walking.
Yesterday I took the bus to go back to the chanel counter to exchange something (and ended up buying a lipgloss, confession) and two ladies on the bus got into a fight over the cell phone use. One lady was using her headphones, but, apparently the lady next to her could hear everything the lady was saying because the volume was up so high, and got up and told her how rude she was.
Then the argument began: the woman on the phone yelling at her saying “me talking on the phone is not different then you talking to the person next to you” the other screaming “yes it is! yes it is!” over and over again..exchanges of shut up! started and by then, I was off the bus, & off to beauty land.
A woman in my building yelled at me about the stroller in the elevator. I was so shocked and appalled that I had no time to respond, not to mention being mortified of her behavior in from of my children. I have zero alternatives for transporting my kids other then a stroller….I just went home closed the door and cried in the bathroom.
Everyone is on edge these days…the feeling I have in the streets and everywhere else apparently!
What?! Are you supposed to drag the stroller up the stairs or hoist the kids up on a rope through the window?
HA! true!
I live in the 30’s, so climbing 30 + stairs would not be feasible
I’m sorry this happened to you. I agree, people are so on edge these days. They (me included) get wrapped up in their own thoughts and life and it makes for a lot of unkindness.
Glad for these reminders to be more sensitive to others.
we all do it
Its really hard to be mindful in the moment
I am also so sorry this happened to you, Wow. Only to say that we are not responsible for other people’s words or responses and frustration on her part for something else is no excuse to treat you that way, it’s not acceptable any time. Still stunned myself.
Would she have been as rude to an adult in a wheelchair, I wonder?
Oooh, I’m so sorry about the unnecessary stroller comment. And in an elevator? That’s some nerve. Sometimes people are just looking for an outlet for their meanness. Blech.
Years ago I pushed my two little ones in a double stroller everywhere. Each week we went to the supermarket where I would pull a grocery cart behind me while pushing the stroller in front of me. People were almost always kind, even offered to help us, and some shoppers smiled or complimented us on getting things done together.
Once in the dead of winter I was yelled at by a harried looking man (who was carrying a tiny little shopping basket with two things in it) because I was in his way and slowing him down. I looked into his eyes and said nothing then kept shopping. But I went home, put the babies down for their naps, and cried. It happens. Tomorrow will be better.
Wow. I’m so sorry that happened to you. Best sometimes to choose to think it’s not about you, it’s about something else bothering them. Sad we’ve become intolerant of children. I’m in awe of women who navigate the city with them.
That is just nuts. My husband and I get onto the elevator with our bicycles all the time and no one has even so much as looked sideways at us.
How unpleasant! There are lots of crazies in this city. I’ve heard lots of fights and nastiness in elevators when I did home care( on the UES!) I used to carry all my work stuff in a wheely bag and people would make nasty comments all the time. Sometimes you just gotta remind yourself that some people are just off and keep doing what you’re doing.
Oh my God, the woman is an idiot! So sorry that happened to you. Since you live in the same building, she better not be able to look you in the eye. Shame on her!
I wore this all fall. I enjoy many of the Jo Malone scents, and, as they are nearly all very light, it’s fun to lavishly spray them, esp. in hot weather. I have a theory that if they cost about third less (thus enabling even more lavish spraying) they would be ENORMOUSLY popular. Prove me right, Jo.
And actually, I have not attempted to look for them at the discount sites! I wore 3 sprays and the scent was gone in about 5 hours and then it came back, flitting in and out.
Having so much fun reading about new releases. I’ve been away from fragranceland for a few years(had 2 babies and lots of time where I couldn’t wear most of my scents) and so I’m just “shopping” my collection. Today is Yves Rocher Vanille Noire. This is the most comfortable vanilla I’ve ever worn. It’s milky and soft with just a hint of something rich and dark there.
Comfortable vanilla, that sounds wonderful! 🙂
Welcome back to fragranceland!
Welcome back! I have a travel spray of this and a number of body products. The price point is great and the products are fabulous!
Continuing on with my Zoologist samples, today I’m in Macaque. I’m kind of back and forth on this one. I basically like it, but there is a raspy wood note that is a touch overbearing. It’s the kind of thing that one day might be fine but another day would be an ice pick to the nose. Even over the course of today I’ve been back and forth over whether it annoys me or not.
I will say I’m liking Macaque much better late in the day now that the cedar note has burned off and the woods have taken a back seat. The base is supposed to have “white oud” whatever that means, so maybe that’s what I’m smelling now. I’m also getting something kind of citrusy, but maybe that’s the frankincense.
The ice pick to the nose comment may make it a non-starter for me testing it at home as my mom would probably yell bloody murder!
Would love to compare more notes as I’ve been going through my sample set too! So far my favorites are, in order, Civet, Bat, and Panda. I also didn’t much care for Macaque nor did I like Rhinoceros much. The two bird scents, I have mixed feelings about–they struck me as too light and simple and sweet. Oh, and I also like Beaver quite a lot, except I don’t feel it has anything to do with the animal! I mean–linden blossom–huh? It’s a nice one though. I honestly can’t believe I like Bat as much as I do because I detest bananas. Even more do I detest the SMELL of bananas.
Today I’m in a rose trifecta. Showered with Rose Jam shower gel, then moisturized with Tauer Rose Delight oil and added Phi Un Rose from a sample. Might have to get a bottle of Phi.
everything is coming up roses for you
Thank you. I could use it..
Oh, now you are speaking my language. You smell fantastic!
Oh, my. What a combination of scents!
Oh my you smell fabulous! May have to try that.❤
I think I’ve done this exact same trifecta! Sometimes you just have to WALLOW in rose!
Divine!
I have done that exact combo myself, it’s fantastic!
Belle en Rykiel, it’s like a warmer Pour un Homme today, and hopefully will carry me through a busy day.
I LOVE that one and hardly anyone ever mentions it!
Me too/correct!
I thought this week’s theme would have been right up my alley, I’ve been a SF fan as long as I can remember, but I haven’t managed a single original thought. You’ve all had some fabulous ideas over the last few days! Someone mentioned Dune yesterday, so I’m going with the desert-inspired Ubar.
And Ubar is only one letter off from Uqbar so – double points!
Ditto. I figured I could easily do a week of sci-fi and have had exactly zero ideas.
Greetings from the land of Mary Richards, Minneapolis! She is being honored on our local TV and people are leaving flowers at the base of her bronze statue downtown. I am wearing some Charlie body splash, the only thing I could think of that really screamed 1970’s single career woman.
If you are watching clips from MTM Show, all the opening credits were filmed in Minneapolis. That house still stands. Truly a ground breaking character, so yay for Mary. Both the real woman and the beloved role.
How cool! I agree, Charlie is quite fitting for a ’70s career woman.
LOVE all of this!
Charlie is perfect. I watched a video in the local paper of a columnist visiting the spots in the opening credits. It was cool.
I was at the local Nordstroms yesterday and they’re now carrying the Diana Vreeland line and the Prada Infusions. I tried on DV Smashingly Brilliant(In the blue bottle). It was slightly aquatic, but in a good way. Not so much the price. Also took home a sample of infusion d’Ouillet, a powdery, sweet n spicy carnation.
The carnation didn’t do anything for me, sadly. I really love the smell of that flower but still on the hunt for a good carnation scent.. one that’s not to heavy on the cloves.
If you find a good carnation, please report!
CDG: Red Carnation
DSH Oeillets Rouge
Prada No. 2 Oeillet
I believe mals and undina have posts centered around carnations!
Yes, I recall seeing another carnation that Prada does.
Thanks for the heads up on mals & undina!
Yay for Infusions at Nordies! I’m going there this weekend and hope to find a tester of the Infusion d’Oeillet.
“There’s a problem on the horizon. There is no horizon.”
SOTD = Cabochard = Rogue One
For Jyn Erso. And for the dryness of Jedha, Saw Gerrera’s voice, and the humor of a certain Sith lord.
Ah, nice thinking there.
Wearing LAP Passage d’Enfer, my current go-to perfume.
Also, I’m wearing a sample on the back of my hand: Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum. It smells like cherries and almonds, not usually my thing. But the musky dry down is starting to win me over.
I’ve been living in Santal Majuscule or Terracotta. Both are gorgeous when it’s freezing! Can’t think of a thing for the sci fi day. The weirdest thing I’ve ever smell ,on myself ,was Stash, on the third time I tried it. It smelled just like pickle juice over a sappy cedar block. ????
Ewww. That sounds awful. I haven’t smelled Stash yet but I’ve been curious because so many people seemed to like it.
Suzy Q-some people are loving it..
It was the strangest experience I’ve ever had with fragrance. The Stash was challenging but interesting the first time I tried it. The second time It seemed much stronger , awfully tenacious, and I had a headache from it. The third time stunk. Everything was hyper-exaggerated – the smell was nuclear and so was the headache and nausea. I’ve wondered why some have had such great experiences with it and some have had such awful ones. The musks?
It’s linear and it is cedar heavy and a tiny bit pickly (I mean, I can smell pickles if I focus really hard). I thought it was intensely boring the first couple of tries but kept craving it. I’m happy to say that it seems to be headache-safe for me but I can see how awful it would be if it was a trigger. It is very tenacious.
Oooh, pretty. I will definitely get out Terracotta for a cold weather spritz. Sounds lovely.
Stash was all smoke on me. I got a whiff of dill pickle in the dry down from a new bottle of Infusion d’Iris EdP. I thought I was imagining it, but now I’m interested to try again.
It is loveliness in the cold tiffanie.
Do let us know about the infusion d’iris, if you try it again.
I’ve gotten “dill pickle” from perfumes in the past but usually fleetingly. I have no idea what note might cause that impression.
I get dill pickle sometimes from guaiac. Wonder if there’s some in Stash.
There are a few materials that make me think of pickles. Petitgrain is one, and elemi is another.
I dill pickle in Jo Malone Wood Sage $ Sea Salt (my SOTD) and I happen to like it!
Fat fingers again grrrr
My plan to have another sci-fi scent was waylaid by oversleeping and lack of inspiration. I have on Au Coeur du Desert simply because it sounded good.
Have a happy Thursday!
Very late to the party today. Started out in Lyric at 8:30 this morning and I am in the very end of the last hurrah and when I get home from work, I will go with Epic to finish my day.
