Hump Day, plus Virginia Woolf's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I cannot find my sample of Jardins d’Écrivains Orlando, but as there are flowers (roses, carnations, hyacinths, you name it) sprinkled all throughout Mrs. Dalloway, (and for that matter, To The Lighthouse) I went with Lorenzo Villoresi's lovely Donna, which I have not worn in an age.
Reminder: 1/27 will be Sci-Fi Friday — wear a fragrance that transports you to some alternative futuristic scenario, or that matches a favorite Sci-Fi novel or movie. Suggested by Solanace, who mentioned Strange Invisible Perfumes Fire and Cream as a cologne a cyborg might enjoy wearing.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Oh, Virginia! I’ve just recently reread Orlando and enjoyed it very much, again.
I’m wearing Iris Silver Mist in the honour of Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee. I think iris can be a good match for SF in general and ISM is the purest, most abstract of them. Ninefox Gambit is one of the most math-based SF novels I’ve ever read and requires some advanced abstract thinking, so I thought ISM would be fitting.
I also just wanted to recommend Ninefox Gambit to all Science Fiction readers here. A lot of the world building and techy details go over my head, but it doesn’t really bother me, as it’s a devious, epic political/military space adventure with some truly great concepts and wonderful characters. If you like Banks or Leckie or Rajaniemi (or even Asimov’s Foundation series) you might enjoy this. The body count is very high, though, so be warned.
Noted.
🙂
Thanks for the rec, it sounds really interesting. You also smell lovely.
I was seriously impressed, worth a look.
You smell great. I am a big Star Trek fan, but the rest of my family are major sci fi readers. I haven’t seen Ninefox Gambit, but will be sure to
recommend it to them. The ISM /SF match makes a lot of sense!
It is pretty challenging, so I’m careful with recommending it to novices, but for anyone used to SF, absolutely. Not that non-SF readers cannot handle challenging texts, but books like this tend to require a certain level of comfortability with the genre to be fully enjoyed. In any case, I found it very rewarding.
Sounds like a good read! I will look for it.
Probably my favourite SF book in the last 12 months, but as always, YMMV.
I got this on audible and am listening to it on my commute. It’s pretty intense! Definitely holding my attention.
It is intense. I’m not sure I could have followed it on audio.
I’ve been looking for a science heavy sci fi read so many thanks for the rec.!
Yes, this is pretty hard SF, but at the same time very imaginative and ambitious. I enjoyed it a lot.
“…If you like Banks or Leckie or Rajaniemi (or even Asimov’s Foundation series) you might enjoy this. The body count is very high, though, so be warned.”
Excellent.
🙂
ISM is a perfect choice for SciFi week. It’s the one I thought of right away – somehow spacey and earthy at the same time. I think it’s what I’ll wear on Friday
Yes, that’s how I think of ISM, too.
Not much of a sci fi fan, but love Orlando, have u seen the film with Tilda Swinton?, I would love to re watch that, I saw it as a teen in the early 90’s, before I’d read any V. W, and it had such an impact on me that afterwards I read quite a few of her novels back to back. I can imagine V. W in Iris silver mist too!
Swinton as Orlando was perfection.
It’s one of the biggest mysteries of my life that I haven’t seen that movie, as I love the book and adore Tilda.
New Kindle for Christmas, 2-week getaway coming up, still mourning the wonderful Ian (M) Banks, at a loss as to what to buy… no longer! Many thanks, Annikky :))
Sorry, Iain!
It’s not the same of course, but I have read every single Banks SF novel, so I hope our tastes overlap at least to a certain extent. And if you haven’t read it yet, Ann Leckie’s Radch trilogy is great as well.
I’m all sorted for February now. Thank you:)
Tabarome (vintage) Creed.
Much like Caron Tabac Blond extrait, minus what little floralcy TB exudes.
Jam O’ Du Jour (LOL) : The Knack My Sharona.
Has anyone ever met a Sharona?
😀
Triple strength coffee.
Carpe Diem. Peace.
I can’t imagine how annoying it would have been to have had the name Sharona way back when! But no, never.
Joining you on triple strength coffee today, Bear!
Tossed & turned all night as I was worried I’d mess up the scheduled 8am birthday conference call to mom (70th!) with all our family.
It went off without a hitch, except for Dad’s senior moment when he did not know how to put the iphone on speaker and had to call back with land line phone.
🙂
Send Birthday wishes to your Mother from me, floragal!
More coffee.! STAT! 😀
Awww. TY!
Seconding birthday greetings to your Mom!
Thanks! She’s quite a lady.
Happy birthday Mom! So young from my perspective.
🙂
Happy Birthday to your mom!
I now have ‘My Bologna’ stuck in my head. I guess that’s what happens to lifelong Weird Al fans. Anyway, rock on, Bear!
You too, Creosote !
You smell great, Bulgari Black is fantastic !
Finally, a sunny and beautiful day. SOTD Jo Malone Dark Amber and Ginger Lily. Cardamom, amber, ginger. Very nice. I like the creamy aspect of it. Unfortunately, the sillage is very poor and after two hours it is almost gone. I was having more expectations, but it did not make any great impression on me. Money saved!
So nice to see a patches of blue sky this morning!
This is such a sandalwood scent on me! It is creamy, wood pudding maybe? I have no issues with staying power unlike you.
Speaking of staying power for the JM’s, I sprayed some of her new Myrrh & Tonka on a blotter Monday and it has smelled up my coat pocket! It’s really strong, and quite lovely too.
Most of the Malone’s disappear quickly on me. I have not tried Myrrh and Tonka yet, but I am glad to hear it has a stronger sillage. I have a sample, so I might be luckier with that one.
Lovely scent! Poor projection, which is fine with JM; Dark amber seems to last on me all day (but then again I wear a body cream which may help in staying power.)
The lotions make a big difference when you wear them together with the colognes. Mimosa and Cardamom is a good example. However, Pomegranate Noir is strong enough and has a good longevity without the lotion.
The lotions are lovely and they really do help the fragrance stay all day. Agreed with Pom Noir- cologne intense indeed!
Layering Citrus Man by Dame with Gingerade essential oil\
I smell like a 7 and 7
My very first drink I had with my father was that. I remember it well, I had just turned 21, was home on college break, he had to go to the VA hospital for a check up and turned to me and said “I have to buy you a drink” and preceded to take me into this dive bar near the hospital. I was the youngest one there, I felt like I was surrounded by veterans of his age, sporting their baseball caps with all sorts of pin from war and what not. The drink was good but strong. Its nice to remember the good times
Lovely memory!
Aww, what a wonderful story- thank you for sharing!
I’m sure you smell great!
That’s a beautiful memory. It sounds like it belongs in a book.
So cool that your dad could take his daughter out with the guys.
Wonderful memory!
Such a warm memory. And that sounds like a nice zippy fragrance combo- I can almost taste it.
That’s a nice memory that really made me smile. Thanks for letting us in on it.
Like this. Those memories are precious.
A wonderful memory, thanks for sharing it.
This is great, it’s good to have special memories.
It so nice to remember the good times and the influence my Dad had on my life.
🙂
Awesome!
Great memory! What a wonderful thing to hit a dive bar with Dad. I’m visiting my dad and looking forward to our steak or fish date night to get my usual Old Fashioned.
Thanks for sharing this memory.
I am wearing CD Mitzah, I was late to work this morning so I grabbed it quickly , I am happy with my choice though.
I am tired of winter and looking forward to spring and spring scents.
Me too.
You smell amazing
I wore that last night. You smell great.
SOTD is Diorella extrait de parfum of which Virginia would approve. I loved ‘To the Lighthouse’.
You smell amazing.
Possibly, although in her diary she complains about K. Mansfield’s perfume! “she stinks like a ____well civet cat that had taken to street walking”
So maybe, maybe not!
To The Lighthouse is the one I re-read most often, followed by Mrs. Dalloway. I will admit I tried to re-read The Years recently and just couldn’t.
You are probably right there. I mean I love smelling like decaying peaches with citrus but she might not.
The Years is such hard work. I did read it, but while admiring it, it wasn’t an enjoyable read. Have you read The Waves?
I have read all her fiction and most of her non-fiction, and most of the major biographies. Some of the books I’m sure I have read 10 times over, and most I have read at least twice, but The Years and Flush — so far, one reading.
Because of the way my books are organized alphabetically, W is actually on a shelf just above my computer, so I can glance up and see all of Wodehouse and the various Wolfe / Wolff / Woolf books, and on the shelf just above that, all of the Waugh & Welty & Wharton. It’s very comforting even if some of them I will never read again. Marie Kondo does not understand.
We need to talk about Marie Kondo, and how her organization precepts do work, but how it has a class component and consumption component that should be questioned.
“What ho!” I said.
“What ho!” said Motty.
“What ho! What ho!”
“What ho! What ho! What ho!”
After that it seemed rather difficult to go on with the conversation.
LOVE the Jeeves and Wooster stories.
Ede97005, we’ve had a couple of Kondo debates here, most recently in the comments to 5 vetiver perfumes for winter. So the issue of the proper sort of relationship one should have with their belongings has been on my mind lately.
Tiffany, I am sure I have read all of Wodehouse five times over, and when things are just too grim for even the books to work, I watch the Fry & Laurie versions 🙂
OOPs, I am sorry, Tiffanie not Tiffany!
No but I do 😉 . I love just glancing at my books.
I really like the Hermione Lee biography, very extensive and informative.
To combat our miserable super windy icy yucky weather, I am wearing a drop from my cherished decant of OJ Tolu. Perfect antidote!
Hi Ann, just a quick hello to let you know you smell gorgeous! January being the busiest month I am not around much, but was glad to see you back. I am in Cuir de Lancome.
CdL is lovely! It’s nice to be back most of the week! My tolu is very special! 😉
Twins! Cuir de Lancome, goes well with my cashmere sweater. 🙂
I wore Tolu recently (I think, for the last Friday’s community project), and it was lovely on a cold day.
You smell wonderful.
I’m wearing the very last of my LL Eau de Desir sample. I think a cyborg could work with this.
Songes!
Beautiful!
I debated between creamy incense (L’orpheline) and floral incense (Iris Nazarena). The sunny weather had me reaching for floral so I’m in Iris Nazarena.
Today is one of those odd days. Shortly after getting to work we had a power outage and over half the office left to WFH while us stragglers waited it out. The power is back on, but I’ve already cancelled a lot of stuff for today.
Sun!!!! What a relief! SOTD Is from my neglected decant of CdG LUXE Champaca. I needed a cheerful white floral today and I really like this one. Just the right balance of sweet florals, citrus, and some spice.
You smell great and bright!!
Thank you! A great winter pick-me-up!
Such a relief! Again, I feel like a new human being because of blue sky. This winter is really testing me in this regard.
Amazing what a blue sky will do for the mood.
Send me some sun, please!
the sun and nice temperatures to boot!
I’m still cold (anything below 55 is too cold for this lightweight) but much better than the last week!
Fine. It gets sunny just as I leave town. Grrr…. that CdG sounds really nice. I like a bit of spice in floral.
Hope you’re somewhere warmer, though. This is one of the first white florals that changed how I felt about white florals.
Today I am wearing Bvlgari Black. This was the first fragrance I ever purchased unsniffed. I’ve gone on to purchase several others without smelling beforehand and I’ve rarely been disappointed.
Excellent choice, I am a fan of BB and it’s quirks. Glad it worked out for you!
I took a big chance back in November with Kenzo Jungle L’elephant. My family refers to it as “the Christmas Beast” – but in a good way.
Jungle L’elephant is great too
Love your family’s nickname for Jungle L’Elephant!
Twin! You smell great.
Spiritueuse Double Vanille today. Boozy deliciousness. Thank you to a generous NSTer for this one????
We’ve gone from gray and dreary here to snow covered and white and school canceled, which is a rare occasion for us.
My street looks very Ansel Adams-y right now with the snow hanging in the tree branches.
Happy humpday everyone!
How wonderful, enjoy the winter wonderland with the kids!
You smell mmmmgood!
I’m in Alahine today. A colleague just peeled an orange and the smell of orange zest and Alahine is out of this world. Add the blue sky I’m looking at out my window and I’m a happy chick.
Alahine is perfectly gorgeous! I can only imagine this smell with orange peel!!!
Me too! Great description!
You smell so wonderful!
your coworkers are so lucky!
Alahiiine is gorgeous
I wore Alahine on Monday and enjoyed it very much but now I think it would have been even better with the smell (and, maybe, some taste? ;)) of an orange…
You smell very nice!
Today I’m wearing Taklamakan, which I imagine smells like the Spice from Frank Herbert’s Dune books.
A desert planet sounds kind of nice right now; here on my part of Earth, it is raining ice.
Really? I am intrigued.
OMG OMG OMG! Seriously? Dune is one of my favorite books PERIOD, never mind Sci fi books. I have to check out this scent!
There was no room to comment on such above, but I need to give you a hearty compliment on Marie Kondo + class issues comment upthread a bit…
Taklamakan even has a name that sounds sci-fi! I’m imagining you smell out of this world wonderful.
I spent most of a youthful summer devouring Frank Herbert’s books. I hope someone will wear Dior Dune on Friday. 😉
I thought the same of Taklamakan!
Woke up extra early and enjoyed puppy-coddles and some music from Dessa before starting my day.
Today is #Let’sTalk day in Canada – sponsored by one of our major telecom companies, it is a day when Canadians are encouraged to discuss mental health issues. Every time the hashtag #Let’sTalk is used, a donation is made by Bell to support strong mental health.
As a someone who has struggled with clinical depression her entire life, I take every opportunity to try and remove some of the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Wearing the amazing Zelda by En Voyage – Zelda Fitzgerald struggled with mental illness herself.
I may not be perfect, but I can smell as if I am.
Have a great day, and if you, or someone you love is struggling, then #Let’sTalk
That’s pretty cool. There’s a lot of mental illness in my family, myself included, and I feel like you do, removing the stigma is so important. And you smell fabulous today 🙂
wonderful. I don’t do much hashtag’in but I will do so today
Editing to correct hashtag – it should be #BellLet’sTalk
That’s a good initiative, I hope it would bring some help to those who might need it or make life a little easier for people who struggle with different types of disorders, not fully understood by those of us who’s lucky not to suffer from those or observe it closely in the family.
Zelda isn’t for me, but it’s a good perfume, and you smell perfect!
What a brave and wonderful effort – both yours and Bell’s. Your southern neighbor is a tad slower in advocacy.
Thumbs up, hannahmom! The stigma needs to be smashed.
other people’s prejudice and stigma, makes challenging conditions so much more difficult to cope with, it’s so important to talk about these issues. Good job!
Prince William supports Mental Health Awareness. You’re in good company!
This is a really brave and amazing thing you are doing today, hannahmom!
Very dark, and gloomy AGAIN. I’m wearing Over the Musk. Love this, it cheers me up.
Sending you some of our sun, lillyjo!
Sampling Zoologist Civet this morning and so far it’s living up to the hype. Tuberose is usually a deal breaker for me but this is so carefully blended and the base notes are so complex that it works beautifully, the coffee note really comes through.
You smell great! Civet is an animalic floral fragrance that is not just “intellecually” appealing, but actually wearable.
Perfume twins today. I applied with too heavy a hand–momentarily forgetting what it was I was applying. Fortunately I am working from my home office. As they say, this activity is better left to the proverbial professional on a closed circuit course. I don’t recommend others try this at home, or in the workplace, or supermarket, or elevator, or escalator, or gas station…
I really need to try this….
It is a fun fragrance… in moderation!
Me too.
Lalique Le Parfum, which I’ve been testing for a few days, thanks to a generous NSTer. The longevity is impressive and there is a spiciness that lingers with a vanilla patch drydown.
It was a good rainy day companion, but is lively enough for this welcome brisk sunny day.
Lalique Le Parfume is such a beautiful scent. It lasts on me the whole day. I see myself wearing it on any season. You smell great!
Lovely! It does last surprisingly long for something fairly soft.
Guerlain Chamade for Carl Sagan’s Contact Dr. Ellie Arroway.
Chamade is pure bliss and beauty!
Yes it is!
I don’t know where you are or what is your weather, but Chamade is a perfect fragrance for cold winter! I’ll have to wear some this week. It is one of my HG fragrances!
You know I love Chamade, but I feel odd wearing it in cold weather.
I’m with Mals: Chamade for me is Spring.
Summer thunderstorm
Oh goodness- that’s perfect.
Thank’s!
You smell lovely! Contact is one of my favorite movies! Someone could wear Polo for Kitz, haha.
I’m so curious: how did you choose Chamade for Dr. Arroway? (Is there a more obvious connection in the book than in the movie?) Is the chamade drumbeat symbolic of the signal?
I thought she’d wear a perfume that was not too girly, but not a man’s cologne either. A classic, but nothing too assertive. Then I started looking at my decants… But I deeply appreciate your line of reasonig!
D&G The One, for a hit of cozy vanilla plus a dab of sandalwood EO as suggested by a wise NSTer, for added depth and smoothness.
Timbuktu for me today. This is one of my favorites, along with Dzongkha.
i love Dzongkha
Both great scents!
You’ve inspired me to dig out my sample of Timbuktu for tomorrow. I haven’t sniffed it in a while and now I really want to!
SotD= Dior Homme, just a dab, as I sniff a sample of Rochas Femme.
Woolf’s Orlando is one of a few books I’ve read repeatedly that survived my konmari book purge a few years ago.
Wednesday already. Have a good one, NST.
Love Dior Homme – you smell cozy.
Cozy is the right word for Homme. To my nose it opens with a bit of sharpness, maybe the patchouli or something in the amber, but once it settles down it’s heaven.
Saw your comment below about the never-ending crud. My family has been fighting a virus with cough/congestion for two weeks, so “long-lasting” seems to be a theme this winter. Take good care and get well soon. And enjoy the new carpet! 😉
I love Dior Homme, you smell great. As for Marie Kondo, I refuse to get rid of books, they are part of my decoration scheme. I have beautiful built-in oak shelves, if I got rid of all the books I will not likely read again I would have empty shelves, which I find unesthetic.
I love full book shelves, too. There’s something very comforting and almost zen about the visual regularity. For me it was the stacks of books on tables and floor that had to go. 😉
I can not get rid of books either, they are everywhere in the house and they are part of my decoration too, I love to see books everywhere, I have them on coffee tables, on the book shelves, even sometimes on the floor.
You smell great.
Hermes Galop and Guerlain Paris Caprice tea.
jealous of your tea
Happy to hear that some of you are seeing sunshine again. I’m on Day Four of the sinus crud, and Day Two of the big carpet replacement project. They’ll be finished with the carpeting today – hallelujah – but I suspect the crud will linger longer. Wearing Natori, which I’m trying after several of you talked it up. It’s very nice (when I can smell it, which isn’t the case right now), and Mr. G is quite fond of it already, so I might have to track down a FB.
Natori is lovely and so economical!
I’ve heard good things about that Natori, too, but haven’t yet tried it.
Am also having a sinus situation – what in the past has been diagnosed as a sinus infection but is apparently just a major sinus pressure situation. I finished off 5 days of prednisone a couple of days ago but it’s only gotten worse, and have had vertigo since last night. Ugh. I’ve taken everything in my arsenal and have been trying to massage my sinuses but nothing is helping. Hope yours turns around more quickly!
Happy to hear that the carpet adventure is short and sweet. Hopefully, your sinuses will take the hint and you will be feeling better soon!
Happy hump day!
1) So the insurance adjuster came to the house yesterday and inspected the damage. Goodness, it was more than even I estimated. I got a check, and together with my deductible the damage to the interior will be fixed. Since part of the scope of work includes pulling up the upstairs caroet I am considering just replacing the carpet at the same time.I have planned on doing this NEXT year- maid, c’est la vie.
2) Am in Jo Malone’s Tuberose and Angelica. No sci fi connections today- it’s too florally sweet, almost Victorian!
A check on the spot! That can make things brighter.
You smell lovely. You could always wear Tuberose and Angelica in a holodeck setting conducive to floral- sweet fragrances 😉 .
I was pleasantly surprised, and the adjuster said that if there were any other repairs connected to the damage done by the ice, the amounts could be increased to allow for that.
HA! Now Ii am think of Data as Sherlock, solving some late Victorian case!
Yes!! And Dr. Crusher in a full skirt and bonnet working along with him.
I have Tuberose Angelica as well and feel the same way about it. I just don’t wear this one the way I used to.
I think you have to be in a particular mood for it. Like Kai.
I have a severe case of dragging butt today. Last night, I couldn’t fall asleep until 3 am and woke up at 7 am. Don’t know why I couldn’t. So I am wearing Jicky in EDP form. Jicky is one of my comfort scents and don’t know why I have been neglecting it in favor of Shalimar. Finally got my W-2 so I can file my taxes and get my refund.
I favor Shalimar to a lot of perfumes I have 🙂
… and buy more perfume with it? 😉
Maybe, I will see what is left over after I figure out next month’s budget.
Hope you will sleep better tonight!
Ugh, sorry about the lack of sleep, but you do smell fantastic!
In PoaL today…happy the rain in San Diego has stopped for now and we have returned to our default sun.
Robin’s post yesterday has inspired me to unearth my little bottle of Organza Indecence on my very messy dresser tonight. I shall have to dig through the outermost layer of perfume samples, wade deep thru the second layer of samples and then finally hit the not-so-molten core of perfume minis.
Hi She-ra, you made a comment the other day about the new formulations of the exclusifs. Yesterday I tried the new EDP against the old EDT of No 22. and also compared to the parfum (I have of 22 from the 90’s) (pre-reformation). The “voluptuousness” is not there in the new formulation, its wears a bit sheer on me but I am also dabbing. I didn’t feel like it was a total flop and enjoyed it.
I just thought I would share with you since you mentioned they butchered 31RC.
I have to go back and return something at the chanel counter today, maybe I will give 31 RC a try or others. I can report back to you if you want but I am no expert!
Have fun at the counter and let me know what you think of 31 RC EDP. I like no. 22 too. I had one of the old mini perfumes sets w/ 22 a while ago but it is sadly long gone. I’ve debated buying an old set on Ebay. I shall have to compare the 22 EDT and EDP as well. I think people have liked CdR EDP and think it is as good and even an improvement to the EDT. I am curious about La Pausa in the EDP too. I sniffed it but haven’t properly sampled it yet. The EDT is lovely but so very fleeting.
I sampled 31 RC on the skin, I don’t think the dry down is too bad, the opening is much different .
Cuir de R, was very nice but I have no comparison.
What I liked in the EDP that I didn’t like in the EDT was the Gardenia.
Boos de Isles on paper did not smell the same too me, I was very sad, but will have to test on the skin
Love how I went to return something, only to buy, another lipgloss. ????
I meant the dry down is not too bad, similar to the original for 31 RC
Good to know….I shall have to revisit 31 RC EDP and give it another whirl.
Don’t feel bad about the lipgloss. High-end lipsticks and lipglosses are some of the only things we have to push us through these dark news times.
Let me know if you need more of the EDTs please. I have big bottles of 31 RC, Coromandel, Box of Eels and 1932 in the EDTs and would be happy to send you some of any or all if your coffers are running low. Seems like we will need lots of lipstick and perfume for the foreseeable future. 😉
I was in the mood for citrus, so I went with Calyx. This was a favorite of mine in high school, and I bought a decant last fall, thinking it would be fun to try it again. However, it mainly brings me back to getting ready for school very early in the morning during the cold MN winters in my parents’ under heated house. Proustian in a bad way, I guess.
But you still enjoy wearing it, yes?
I still think it’s a lovely and unique scent, but I’m not sure if I enjoy it anymore. I do still enjoy wearing my other high school favorite, Aromatics Elixir, which doesn’t bring back these memories at all. Our brains are so strange . . .
Isn’t that the truth!
I have very strong memories of the same (not the perfume, but the underheated house. And then going to a freezing cold underheated school.) Winter is so much more tolerable when it’s at least warm INside.
At least my school was warm! But my parents’ house . . . There was no reason for it – my mother is just one of those people who think turning the thermostat higher than 60 degrees is too self-indulgent.
Cold and damp but sunny here in San Diego. I am cozied up in Cologne pour le Soir.
You smell so good! I wore it last week, I think.
Great scent! I wear it to bed a lot, but that seems like such a waste, lol.
Good morning all! I’ve woken up this morning feeling particularly lively. I can’t think of any reason for that, but I’m enjoying it. I haven’t completely decided what to wear today, but Trayee is calling out to me.
A morning like that is a wonder, isn’t it? Enjoy!
I’m sampling Zoologist Panda today. I liked the earlier stages, but so far I’m not really loving the drydown. It started out really nice and grassy and green (if maybe *slightly* air-freshener-ish), and now it’s kind of laundry detergent. At least it’s just a sample. I gave the others a little sniff last night, and so far, I think I like Rhinoceros, Civet and Bat the most, but we’ll see how I feel when I give them a full wearing.
I think I want this more as a body wash or something like that more than as a perfume.
I just got my sample set yesterday and have yet to open it. Maybe this weekend.
I’d like to hear your take on Zoologist.
I will share!
I tried Civet first. I really liked it. A very comfortable scent in my view and I received compliments from everyone around me ( unsolicited!)
It had good longevity and was surprisingly fun to wear. I really wasn’t sure a perfume named ‘Civet’ could work but it does!! I want a larger decant sample. I think it is perfect for cooler weather but am anxious to take it South for a test drive in March.
Late to NST today! This is my happy place on the Internet! 🙂
SOTD: Beautiful. I got a mini sample at Christmas, and it smells so different than how I remember it back in the 90’s…..Anyone know if it was reformulated since then?
Maybe it’s just my nose overwhelmed with perfume memories? LOL!
The SA at Estee Lauder assured me NONE of their perfumes have been reformulated, but Cinnabar smells different to me. But it could just be my memory.
It’s probably been 25 years since I sniffed it, so my nose is confused! LOL! Thanks!
Aliage was definitely reformulated. It was my signature back in the day and is much lighter now.
Happy Hump Day Everyone! My SOTD is Wood Sage and Sea Salt. Not really sure how any of my fragrances fit in with the theme this week, as I know very little about Sci-Fi. Hope everyone is having a great, productive week. Stay well and fabulously fragranced, my friends.
I considered wearing this today. You smell great!
Indochine. Uncharacteristically, I undersprayed. I wish that I had taken my bottle or a decant to work.
Ooh, lovely fragrance. You’ve reminded me to bring it out into rotation.
Yum. I went through a decant of that very fast, probably from over spraying. It’s not too hefty.
It doesn’t have the greatest longevity but it’s pretty strong when first sprayed. I really love it during this time of year.
Same, which killed any desire for more of it, even though it’s lovely. On me, both it and Cadjmere wore beautifully for about an hour then suddenly *poofed.* No die-down or gradual decrease, just gone.
Wow, that is pathetic. I get at least 4 hours and longer on my clothes. My bottle is from Luckyscent, no affiliation, and was MUCH stronger than the dabber sample that I tested prior to purchase. I actually had to let my bottle sit for a year before I could wear it. It was just too strong at first.
“You always told me to stay off the freeway.”
“Here, take a cookie…”
SOTD = Bvlgari Black = The Matrix trilogy.
It’s a reboot of my choice for the ‘At the Movies’ project. As I said then: Leather for all the (p)leather clothes, rubber for the epic car/motorcycle/semi chase (and that awesome entry Trinity has at the power plant) in ‘Reloaded’, lapsang souchong tea for all the kung fu, and vanilla for the Oracle’s cookies! Moreover, the whole modern, urban feel Black is meant to evoke perfectly fits the aesthetic inside the Matrix.
Happy Hump Day, NST!
Excellent!
Good one!
Good job you!
31 Rue Cambon today. Looking at the above posts it sounds like I might have to get stingy with my EdT. Oh dear! It’s one of my few FB’s and I was enjoying the freedom, but hearing that it may be endangered gives me pause. Though seriously, it would take me sooo looonng to finish the bottle.
You smell fabulous!
I know, I’m going to have to be economical with my EDT, especially since it’s the smaller size. I can only hope enough people complain to Chanel that they will eventually tweak the formula a little to fix it!
Or just bring back the EDTs. There’s no reason the edt, edp, and extrait can’t all be available at the same time, as with most of the other Chanels.
Seriously, after I read She-ra’s review, I hugged my bottle!
Havana Vanille today (I can never remember what L’artisan re-named it, which makes me wonder why they got rid of a perfectly memorable name in favor of one that isn’t). Nom, nom, nom. My favorite kind of vanilla: lush, boozy, little bit smoky. And I can smell it through the sinus congestion I’m trying to fight off (TMI?).
Vanille Absolument, I think. Some sort of copyright lawsuit led to the rename, but I can’t remember what the issue was (if I ever knew). My small decant of HV is gone now. You smell pretty great!
Thanks!
And after re-naming it L’artisan discontinued it – what have they got against vanillas, anyway?
I wanted something light and pretty today so I’m wearing Amyris Femme. Yesterday was a ski day and it was gorgeous-not too cold or windy, sun all day. I wore sunscreen but still have a pink streak across my nose and cheekbones.
I got home late last night so didn’t comment in yesterday’s thread, but I thought I would say here (re: the freebiemeet) that it does get expensive sending multiple packages. It makes me feel good to send things to regular posters, who have become “perfume friends” through NST, but to send something to someone who pops up only to claim a freebie and then is never heard from again bugs me, so I stopped participating in freebiemeet a while ago. I don’t have an answer other than to continue to offer free stuff privately or in a regular post if there is something I want to give away.
Yes to this. I like giving things away randomly to you all 😉
Me too!
Agree with all of this and it seems an easy fix is to change it up so people feel comfortable asking that shipping charges are covered by the recipient. Just a slight shift in the rules that participants will need a paypal address and to pay for shipping, or something along those lines?
Must’ve been nice to be in the sun all day yesterday!
This! I don’t mind the expense at all as long as it goes to a regular NST participant. I will still participate but will also mention an available freebie in a Lazy Weekend poll or even on a regular SOTD post.
Just so you guys know, I have made a note to revisit this topic in our next follow-up poll — lots of good suggestions so far but not sure all “interested parties” will have seen them.
SOTD is Vetiver Extrordinaire from a sample. I really need to buy this.
Oh, and #BellLet’sTalk
Sunshiny here, yay!
I have two bottles of the shower gel! I have so many shower gel bottles on rotation before I start using one of the bottles.
So cranky today after being scheduled for (completely useless) training at an ungodly hour this morning. At least there was Chanel 19 to help me through.
🙁 and 🙂
SOTD is a sample of Mandorlo di Sicilia from Acqua di Parma. It reminds me of a root beer float in a good way, which would be great for a nice Summer day but does not match the gloomy weather we’re having!
To you get the almonds in this one? It was mentioned yesterday to me when I was asking for ideas of almond centered scents.
I get a lot more vanilla and anise than almond. It’s pretty much stayed “root beer” on me!
It always smelled like creme soda to me. I haven’t worn it for a few years, but never picked up on the almond. Maybe I would now, who knows? It is yummy, though, and I always wore it in summer even though it sounds like it might be more winter-appropriate.
Smell Bent Cocoa Rose, one of the samples I brought with me to CA. I get the cocoa big at first…maybe that’s what’s making me hungry.
Was blind tired after flying yesterday. So, I slept like a teenager and woke up early. About to head out to buy some groceries and, frankly, get some fresh air. The heat! The heat! I mentally deal with it by pretending it is summer and AC is off….
Wow! It’s that hot?
Iris nobile sublime to bring on some spring
It may be too late for you to answer this, but how is INSublime different from IN? I wore my sample of IN for the first time today. Love!
Guerlain Shanghai today, after yoga class. It is such a warm, woody fragrance and perfect for an afternoon spent inside reading.
I haven’t worn this in a long time! You smell wonderful and thanks for the reminder.
It’s thanks to you I bought my bottle!
In Balmain Ivoire (vintage) today. Since I’m still home recovering from surgery, I thought a walk would do me good. Fresh air and a slow pace, but now I am exhausted. Hope I sleep better tonight than last night.
Ivoire is beautiful. I hope you sleep well this evening.
Thank you.. I keep doing the perfume salute, I haven’t pulled this out in a long time. By the way, I love your avatar!
Aww, thanks!
Ambre Narguile for me today. I wish this one hung on longer for me.
Delicious!
Finally a day of sun! Oh I have missed that bright, shiny thing in the sky. All the weather forecasts I saw today mentioned that January has had only 2 sunny days so far. Bleh.
SOTD = testing Jo Malone’s Grapefruit. Gone in about 45 minutes on me.
Thanks for the b-day wishes yesterday, Petunia, cazaubon, and Undina. You all added some extra light to the day.
Happy Belated Birthday, Jalapeno !!
Extend it a bit. 😉
Thank you, Bear!
Maybe I’ll sneak in something this weekend?
I too was happy to see that bright shiny thing in the sky today. I took a long walk in the late afternoon sunshine.
And happy belated birthday! You smell great. I love citrus in the winter.
Thanks, Tiffanie! I just wish I could have smelled like citrus a little longer, you know?
Belated Happy Birthday, Jalapeño!
Thank you, hajusuuri! Belated d-day wishes for your dad, btw. From what you have written about him, he sounds like he was quite an amazing person.
He sure was! Thanks!
Belated birthday wishes to you, Jalapeño!
Thanks, Creosote! And with a tilde, even!
Really, was it only 2 days? I knew it was bad but didn’t realize it was that bad.
Ended up in Teo Cabanel Barkhane yesterday, which is gorgeous. It’s a smooth and creamy lightly soft amber with hints of tobacco and leather, which doesn’t quite seem to match the notes or description. Tested Amouage Sunshine Man this morning, which is indeed sunny and fun, and now wearing a smear of Givenchy Organza Indecence, the last of a small decant which had converted to oil while sitting unattended for over a year. I’m not sure if it’s because of that or because my sweet tolerance has expanded exponentially in the past year that it smells totally different than I recall. Anyway, it’s about gone and not sure what I’ll put on next. I wouldn’t mind some more Sunshine Man, but was also eyeing Alaia earlier.
Kpaint, Ohhhh you make Barkhane sound heavenly !
I am adding this to my 2-Try list!! Would you wear it all season?
I am looking it up as we speak.
Late to the party!
SOTD = Tauer Dark Passage
I know we’re not supposed to hoard but this is one where I am carefully doling out because it is limited edition from 2012. I have two 7 mL travel sprays, one for participating in the Kickstarter campaign and the other one from last year’s reverse swap.
You can read the backstory from Robin’s review. I wore this today because it is superb, the weather is cold enough to support the patchouli, amber, cacao and birch tar while allowing body heat to make it bloom without overwhelming and i have to use it before it eventually dries up.
Cacao, patchouli, birch tar, and iris – sounds like a hajusuuri scent to me. 🙂 Thank you for mentioning Robin’s review. I love to wander the NST archives, and I was tickled that she mentioned Dior Homme, my sotd, in the review.
I actually don’t get Iris nor the Vetiver! It is also not sweet. YMMV 🙂
And you smell wonderful!
I seem to recall someone recently giving me a hard time for hoarding.????
Haha…I will wear this once a month during cooler weather, I think 🙂
Although I usually have a hard time with birch tar, You make it sound lovely. Might as well enjoy it and maybe Andy will bring it back someday. Wouldn’t that be nice if you’re reading this Mr. Tauer? ????
