Friday scent of the day 1/6

Posted by Robin on 6 January 2017 559 Comments

Saint Laurent Sac du Jour

A quick PSA: our Régime des Fleurs contest is still open.

It's take it down a notch Friday! Our community project for today: wear a perfume that has a bad reputation because people wore way too much of it back in the day. Go ahead and wear it lightly, or go loud and proud, you'll get points either way. Thanks to Bear for the suggestion!

What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I'm in Yves Saint Laurent Paris. I went with the traditional 1980s loud and proud application, but I'm not going anywhere this morning so perhaps I have not really lived up to the 'proud' part. Still, I smell like the color of that bag, and you can smell me two rooms away.

Reminder: on 1/13, wear a perfume by Anne Flipo, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the exact Saint Laurent Sac du Jour bag shown above might no longer be available, but you can still get the bag in other, calmer, colors. Bergdorf Goodman currently has it in a variety of colors, $1990 - $2890.

Opium Orchidee de Chine, one spritz, and I will probably wash my arms a half dozen times before I need to be at work at 4pm….

Drakkar Noir over a base of Eden Botanical Dark Patchouli diluted in a carrier oil and spread all over my body…loud and proud in a combo of 80s and 60s fragrances (and a thank you to Holly for inspiring the latter with her wearing of Nag Champa this week)

to quote bear, Carpe Diem and happy Friday, y’all!!!!

Poison, for sure, and for good measure it’s vintage esprit de parfum (I have a 5-mL mini in almost perfect condition). It’s a genius composition but it got a bad name because it completely takes over your life: it’s kind of room-filling and you can’t eat with it on because that’s all anybody can taste/smell. So good, though.

Scent twins! I also have a 5mL vintage mini and I am hoarding it. It’s about half way gone.

When I put it on today (not too strongly, just a few dabs) I liked it but did not love it. Now a few hours later, I’m in love again. Makes me think the top notes are starting to go. Maybe I should use it before it turns. But then I wouldn’t have it any more…

Today is a melancholy day for me, the anniversary of one of my parents passing.

I am taking is down a notch, and cheating a bit. A few puffs of Shalimar body powder, and a dab of Shalimar Souffle. I know it doesn’t get a lot of love here but I find it easy to wear, and its comforting on a day like today.

Cuppa is a green tea, some almond milk and honey. I made eggs for my babies, the ones we get from the greenmarket are very good, and this time the carton had some feathers inside! Good grief!

    Take care everyone!

The obvious choice would have been YSL Paris which I used to wear with wild abandon in the late eighties and early nineties. I think I used about 5-6 sprays of EDP. But I happen to own a bottle of Trésor EDP as well, bought well over 10 years ago, so still very much like her original self, and I think Trésor is much more of a bombshell than Paris. I put on 2 modest sprays and it still feels a tad overwhelming. Gorgeous though, like being smothered by giant apricots.

Y’all would have hated me cause I would wear about 16 sprays of those two powerhouses back in the day…a daily ritual-behind each ear, front back of wrist, crook of elbows, behind knees and tops of feet and each side of the ankles…I was one of those you would NOT want to get in an elevator with!

Ironically, all my loud and proud stuff has been used up and drained many years ago…I had to find a 20 year old bottle of my person’s Drakkar hidden in the bathroom cabinet in order to participate in this project :)

My mom used to wear Tresor – my grandma would always go to the Lancome counter in Macy’s and buy all of her makeup and skincare there. The SA, Pam, would always give her three little goody bags – one for her, one for mom, and one for me! I was pretty young but would still play with the makeup. Mom would get Tresor for Christmas, and my first perfume was Connexion (which I actually just ordered off eBay to rekindle the scent memory!). Mom doesn’t wear it anymore – she went through a long phase of not wearing perfume. When I got into scent a few years ago, I dragged her in with me, so she has new faves now :) I smelled Tresor in Ulta the other day (hunting for a sniff of Stash) and it has such strong scent associations :) I might have to get her a new bottle!

        PSA re SJP Stash.

I was just at Ulta this afternoon and the gift combos of Stash were half off. So I got the combo box of 30 ml of the perfume and 30 ml of the hair/body oil that would have been reduced to $54ish, is now $27 is in total. Those $40 combo gift sets of perfume, lotion, and roller ball, were $20 at my local Ulta.

At essentially $14 for a bottle of perfume and $14 for the matching body oil, WHO COULD RESIST??

My mom wears Trésor and I’m afraid she always over-applies it and it can knock you over. In fact I recently bought her a small bottle of Paris trying to get her to switch and tame things down a bit. I really like Paris in fact! But I’m not sure she’s so taken with it.

I am wearing Jean Patou 1000 inspired by this funny post on Basenotes (by the user SenseOfTheAbsurd):
“Last time I wore 1000 to work it led to a fruitless search for a dead mouse in the walls. I just joined the search and didn’t fess up. I’d have thought that was a fairly safe office scent, but apparently somebody’s hypersensitive to indoles or something.”
Well, it has animalic notes, but a ‘dead mouse’? :) Hypersensitive indeed. I cannot wear it loud and proud, because it is a tiny splash mini bottle with not much perfume left, but I dabbed those last drops finishing the bottle.

I’m not going out the door today because it’s freezing and as long as I’m inside looking out I can pretend I’m in Narnia. So I sprayed on a lot. All that civet, carnation and patchouli just for my own pleasure!

Seriously, I gave myself a good six sprays down my sweater this morning, and I’m still floating in a cloud of the scent. Absolutely fabulous. I have got to get myself a travel-sized bottle of this at the next splitmeet involving the Hermessences.

I’m afraid I haven’t been reading NST much lately; I’ve been so busy :( My thesis defense is less than a month away! Ahhhhh! And still no postdoc offer with money. It’s back to grant-writing I go. Ugh.

I haven’t been a perfumista all that long, so my collection doesn’t have a lot of older scents. I have a bottle of Euphoria, but it gets on my nerves after a few hours, because it’s a loud one. Soooooo….

It sounds to me like perhaps that reviewer worked for Clinique back in the day when it was common practice for the SAs to prowl the floor armed with the latest perfume on offer and take aim at everyone passing by. Sometimes it was a waft, and sometimes it was a direct hit! I do like AE, and Calyx is another Clinique powerhouse that I enjoy.

Oh Calyx was GLORIOUS back in the day when Prescriptives owned it (before reform and before Clinique)….I think I drained about ten bottles of that one…always had one in rotation….

Hee! It is all in the application! The shower gel plus the tiniest spritz in the summer is radiant- there is no other way to describe. You spritz into the air. walk into it and that is it for the day. Wait 10 minutes and you get this amazing, rich rose/patchouli that makes you smell like a goddess from India or North Africa or Greece.

In the winter, just smells like a warm, luxurious hug.

Vintage Lauren. It reminds me of those startling piercing shrieks that little girls emit, and back in the day when I was a flight attendant, it was one of the few fragrances that could knife through the pervasive smell of burnt coffee and cigarettes that took residence in our polyester Calvin Klein ensembles.

Lauren was pretty much the only perfume I owned back in the 80s. I still have my old bottle, unfortunately it seems to have spoiled :( Who knew you shouldn’t leave perfume sitting on your dresser in the sun, year after year after year….

Very nice! I wore Lauren back in high school. I recently came across it in Ulta. Sadly, it smelled nothing like the original. LT of The Guide was right, vintage is the way to go with this one.

Poison for me too, about half a spritz from a bottle of 1990s edp.

I used to truly hate this back in the day… you couldn’t walk through a girls’ college dorm without choking on it! You could practically see the scent contrails in the air, whew. It was always just Too Much.

These days, I think it’s nice. (And yet, I find that I hardly ever wear it, since there are a couple of other white florals I would rather be wearing. I should probably find a new home for it.)

Mals, I remember wearing this in college in the late 80s/early 90s–it’s true, we all doused ourselves in it. My housemate and I could stink up the entire share-house we lived in with 5 other people. It was glorious!

I’m in Flowerbomb, which isn’t loud but does suffer from a bit of a reputation problem in that it was EVERYWHERE, on EVERYONE, for a while. I love its hints of tea and tobacco on me. I never really notice those notes on other people — on others I just get cloying sweetness. Guess I’m the lucky one, huh. :)

I don’t really have any old bombs and didn’t have a scent that I wore like crazy. There was Shalimar in the house, but my mom never wore it.

Anyway, I was inspired by Annikky to wear CdR today.

A respectful dose of Chopard Casmir is what I chose after much deliberation. Turns out I had quite a few minis in this category: Ysatis, Poison, Paris, Fracas (now lotion), Borghese Il Bacio though not sure about the loudness for that one.
Happy Friday everyone!! There’s a glorious cloud hovering over the globe today ????

I love it (obviously), but I know it can be one of those polarizing scents. Good reviews here on NST and over at Bois de Jasmin. Maybe try a decant first to be sure it’s for you.

It’s pretty sweet, for me at least. I’m not hugely into vanilla, but I do like this one in small doses. It’s pretty cozy. I’d go for a mini rather than a larger bottle, though. They’re pretty easy to come by.

I don’t have anything that qualifies for this week’s project, so I’m belatedly participating in one from a few weeks ago: finishing off my sample of Cartier La Panthère.

Spending today enjoying the first sticking snow of the season: lying in bed, making a chocolate cake, and doing . . . not much! Although, I’m supposed to get a mattress foundation delivered later today – hope it makes it through! There’s not MUCH snow, but the southern plains states don’t generally know what to do with themselves when this stuff shows up and it’s very, very cold out.

I really like it. I’ve had this sample for a couple of years – you don’t need much, honestly, the perfume is so tenacious – and now that it’s finished I’m going to keep an eye out for a good GWP, I think. Some people hoped, I gather, for a more animalic scent, but I love the sexy gardenia and patchouli/”oak moss” mix as is. And most days I like the dried fruit opening, too: there’s something resinous about that smell to me, it makes me think of medieval luxury. And on days I don’t like it, it doesn’t last long.

My plan for today was to dip a toothpick into my mini of Black Orchid and put a pencil-point size drop somewhere under my clothes, since to me that is the most over-radiating of all fragrances (though the day is not that far back). But I forgot and wore vintage Ivoire instead, which is one of those that every time I wear it I decide I must wear it every day forever.

    Happy Friday, all!

    1) It is FREEZING. But it is clear, so you can see all the twinkling frost on the grass and trees. Everything looks like it was touched with magic.

    2) SOTD: Aromatics Elixir. This is a hell of fragrance, for a hell of a person. I have the shower gel and the perfume, so I left my house smelling pretty darn awesome. I usually wear this in the summer, where the fragrance would just radiate; but in the cold winter, trapped by a cashmere sweater, Aromatics just settles into the wool and the skin, inviting hugs, not repulsion.

    3) Speaking of which, I need to invented scents called “Old Scarf” “Mom’s Church Purse” and “Winter Sweater” I have ideas! Think of all the scents mingling into one on your old scarf.

It can be, but I have plans for later after I’m done dealing with the “public.”

I’ll be topping off Amber Flush with a HUGE dose of Kenzo Jungle l’Elephant. I’ll be trumpeting loud and proud for real! Surprised no one has mentioned it, but then, I have no clue when it made its debut.

Twins in Andy’s Amber Flush, layered discretely with Dzongkha. Too much under the weather for the 80’s. If I weren’t and if I still owned the perfumes I wore back then it may have been Austenfan’s Peach (I kept a bottle in my car), Ysatis, Beautiful or my favourite LouLou.

Loud and proud in Boucheron this morning. Wondering if this will actually scent the pool when I go for a swim later this morning?

I didn’t actually have this one back in the day…definitely used to overspray Paris back in the early 90’s but can’t bear that one anymore.

Just put on some Rien, which is in its first-hour, World Domination phase. I shall see how much it will cling to my sweater, overcoat and anything else my arms touch today.

In other L&P news, I have a lipstick in the colour of the YSL bag above. Will put some on when I’m ready to go out, either full strength or applied&blotted, which is my usual lipstick MO these days.

I once drained an entire decant of Rien in a few hours because I just could not smell it on myself…I thought well yeah, the name “Rien” maybe that is the point…until I mentioned it to the person who gifted it to me and she gasped as she felt the same “World Domination”

It’s an old Boots No 17 lipstick called Pink Power, which I have kept mainly for nostalgia. Full strength turned out to be Too Much, but I did put in on blotted and it was rather pretty.

I’m afraid I don’t think I was around for the 80s bombshell overapplication, but it sounds light it was a bit fun–at least it might be to start. ;) I’m enjoying reading everyone’s anecdotes! I didn’t know what the challenge was today–but since it doesn’t really apply to me I’m happily in absentia. (also I doubt my co-workers would have been pleased with me.) Baccarat Rouge 540. I’m on a mission to use all my decants as even with parafilm they’re quickly slipping away.

Taking it down quite a bit with unoriginal Fendi. Back in the day I would wear Fendi shower gel, lotion and to many sprays of perfume. I loved it so. I went through a few bottles. A few years ago I purchased the current version. Fendi lite. Or water de Fendi. The original will always be my desert island perfume.

Today I’m wearing Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka – I put on a bright lime green sweater dress from Cos this morning and it needed something creamy and figgy and green! This one is so nice – I love NV’s perfumes and can’t wait to smell Rahele.

Given my experiences with SSS frags, I thought my prudently applied single sprays of Equestrian would bring things down a notch. Surprise, surprise, I can barely smell it only an hour or so later.

Another day off for me and I am already annoyed. One of my Sephora gift cards won’t work on the website but by calling the 800 number it has $15 on it, so that means I am going to have to talk to an actual person to place an order. Since TPC has some Chanel offerings, I want to try out the new no 5 flanker and I can get a small decant for basically free due to loyalty points but when I try to use them, it doesn’t show that the $8.00 credit. It shows the full price with shipping. I’ve never come across a website that makes that confusing. I guess I will hold off. Wearing vintage Chanel no 5 today.

The last few times I’ve been in Sephora there has been someone at the counter with a gift card that won’t work either in store or online and a frustrated SA trying to get the company who manages the cards to fix the issue. I think it’s a pretty common problem.

From 1983, I’m wearing Ungaro Diva. Jacques Polge is responsible for it, and it’s one of those big animalic florals of the ’80s. It smells a bit dated but I love it anyway.

Not participating in the theme as I received my sample of Zoologist’s Civet EDP yesterday, and I cannot stop sniffing.
Subtle citrus notes woven through a very vintage smelly chypre.
    Highly recommend.
*Not affiliated with Zoologist, but Victor Wong is a friend and I hope this scent is his big commercial breakthrough*

Panda and now Civet are my favourites. The opening earth notes of Bat are a work of art. Civet is office friendly, Rhino may not be :)

Heading to a job interview, so have two tiny dabs of Prada Infusion d’Iris only. Quite discreet.

I took an uber just to make sure I get there half an hour early, but the driver got on the highway when i wasn’t paying attention and now we are sitting in traffic. Argh! My fault for not telling him to go the back way. But, still, ugh.

SOTD = Le Labo Vanille 44

F stands for Friday and Failure to participate in the community project. I added a 6th spritz so perhaps I bet partial credit for the LOUD part?

It was snowing this morning but I made it into the city anyway and took the subway instead of walking. My darn Metrocard stopped working (please swipe again which I did over and over again to no avail.). The MTA person in the booth was not helpful – she couldn’t swap out my card because it did not swipe correctly (duh?) but yet she was able to tell me the balance. Anyway, I will need to get the refund by mail! She took pity on me though and gave me a complimentary ride.

Thanks! And this afternoon, I had an issue calling a toll-free number which used to work dialing out from my work phone and this afternoon I had to resort to using my cell phone! Tech support even asked me the equivalent of is your phone plugged in! End result? I had to submit a work request to unrestrict the number from my account. Really? It’s a number used by specialist teams and it seemed to have been randomly restricted with no warning whatsoever.

80s wasn’t a requirement, was it? I’m wearing Angel Taste of Fragrance. Since I used it from a bottle, there is absolutely no way to wear it quietly: a tiny spritz is nuclear! Let’s see how my co-workers survive…

My choice was from the early 90s but I was a teen in the 80s so most of my loud perfume associations are from that decade. Except Angel. I’d say that one is the 80s scent of the 90s.

    Happy Friday guys!!!????

It’s been forever since I logged in but I’ve been lurking in the background for years. I wasn’t wearing my collection much as I was having babies and turns out they have extremely sensitive skin. I actually had to redo registration.

Im experimenting w more discreet application to different pulse points I don’t typically use to avoid them coming in direct contact w my ‘fumes. So far so good, so today I’m participating in the group challenge! ????

I chose two timid sprays of Boucheron by Boucheron. I’m in an aura of flowers on our first snow day. ????

Not sure if I am considered loud in Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant, but I sure am happy to be wearing it.

My original plan, which was to wear a teeny bit of a sample of vintage Poison esprit de parfum, got derailed. After I kicked the Christmas crud to the curb (only 4 days for that!), I got a REALLY nasty GI bug from the NYE parry I went to. Even Mr. Jalapeno, who usually doesn’t get sick, had a couple of rotten days. I ended up not wearing any perfume for most of this week. I did not even want to THINK about perfume.

I am very thankful to the NSTers who had previously mentioned not to wear fragrance when experiencing GI issues… I am certain that you all saved me from a very unpleasant association.

So, illness 2 is now gone, and I am wearing the Elephant to celebrate. The Poison was a little more than I could handle today. :( Maybe next time.

Very good morning, NST. Thank you all so much for your good wishes yesterday–we had a happy day despite the slightly inauspicious start. We didn’t exchange presents–back when we were first married and didn’t have a single penny to spare for anything other than absolute essentials, we began a tradition of saving up for something we both wanted for the house. I can still remember the anxious pleasure of choosing and using our first good wine glasses….goodness, we were so young! And so hard up! I ran out of perfume once and longed for a bottle of something or other — maybe Fidji–and the dear one walked to work for weeks to save up the bus fare so he could buy it for my birthday!

But enough. Back to the present. Today I’m going simple–my perfume is Narcisse Bleu. Its cool crisp notes are perfect for a jeans-and-shirt day. I’m going to bake bread and biscuits all morning and nap this afternoon and generally do very little.

I’ve been racking my brains to recall what I wore back in the 80s and coming up blank. I can remember the little cheap bottles I bought as a teenager in the 70s, and the things I wore when I was a bit older in the 90s, but nothing in between – maybe I wore the 70s things a bit longer than I recall and started the 90s things a bit sooner!

Anyway, the big 80s perfumes largely passed me by. I might spend some time in a department store this afternoon to see what I can try – lots of inspiration from all your comments :)

I never once wore perfume during the 70s, 80s, or 90s! Nor, more surprisingly, did many people I knew. Read ‘I went to a very take-oneself-way-too-seriously women’s college and then a graduate school where you were lucky if people bathed.’ When I smelled anything other than patchouli in the wild it all knocked me over, indiscriminately. So how did I end up here?

Wearing numerous spritzed or philosykos now and will shower and put on Misia or Iris Cendre for conferencing.

Going loud, but not with a scent from back in the day or with a bad rep. Angel Muse is a powerhouse of a scent but if handled correctly it can be quite enjoyable to wear. At least I’m enjoying it!

You smell great. I liked my sample enough to buy a 30 ml bottle yesterday from a third party at discount. What sold me was catching a whiff sometime well after I sprayed it and thinking something smelled good. And then realizing it was me!

Twenty years ago, when I used to work in cosmetics and fragrances, Angel was new and provocative. One of my sexy co-workers wore it exclusively and said it was a fragrance “that went straight to the groin”. Whenever someone flounced by our counter, we could almost “see” the sillage of the Angel that they were wearing!
Lately, I opened a sample of the body lotion and put the paper thing that held it on my bedside table. The smell went on for days till I was forced to throw out the remainder. It had become a gel anyway. Recognized as an iconic scent now, I don’t want to have to smell it again.
    E. L.’s Azuree only requires one spritz and it carries on all day.

It’s summer here and too hot for stonking orientals etc, so I went with Calyx, the Clinique version from a mini I got in a gift pack. I also have a half-bottle of Prescriptives vintage – a bit on the turn now, but it smells more tart that the newer stuff. I didn’t wear Calyx back in the day and I don’t greatly love it, but it sure stands up in heat.

Well, I consider that nearly 25 years ago fits rhe parameter of ‘back in the day,’ so my choice for today’s community project is the original Thierry Mugler Angel from 1992 (sorry, Celestia!). Certainly, a love-it or hate-it scent, I’m actually fairly neutral about it but it’s the body creme version that i love and am wearing today. A light all-over application leaves a much softer (but still long-lasting) and haunting fragrance, especially nice wafting from beneath numerous layers of clothing on a bitterly cold winter day like today.

Laila: I don’t think Angel is a bad scent, it’s just too overwhelmingly strong and not my favourite fragrance category. (I’m at the other end of the spectrum: marine/aquatic.) Had a boyfriend long ago who loved Angel and bought me the stand for the bottle, the deodorant (which is about all I can stand to wear and only in the height of winter), and a gorgeous product: silvery body gel. After applying 2 or 3 Angel products back at the turn of the last century, people passing by in the hallway outside my apt. could probably smell it. Still, it definitely belongs in the pantheon of ground-breaking fragrances.

The only form of Angel I wear is the body creme, and that ONLY in the height (or is it, depths?) of winter – it has to be very cold and I have to be wearing many layers. Otherwise, it’s overpowering. I tried Angel Muse at Ulta on a hot summer day while I was out running errands and I almost got ill; despite so many positive reviews of it I have no desire to try it again, so I understand where you’re coming from!

As much as I love Angel, even when I was still wearing it, the body cream was too much for me :) But you smell good (and loud and proud).
I’ll be curious to check if I can still smell tomorrow morning Angel TOF that I was wearing today (the original Angel usually stayed with me for more than 24 hours).

Late to the party but I am unable to wear perfume to work due to a zero tolerance for it. So it’s vintage Poison EDT for me now. Just 2 sprays, I think I need a top-up. I loved it back in the day, powered through 2 or 3 bottles of the original stuff. I wore it alot when the hubs and I first got together so it holds a special place in my heart. I still love it!
