Wednesday scent of the day 12/14

Posted by Robin on 14 December 2016 174 Comments

monkey

Happy Hump Day, and happy Monkey Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing good old Box of Eels, in extrait.

Reminder: on 12/16, wear a sandalwood fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Oh my.
    Oh my oh my.

Latest addition (number 31) to the FB L’Artisan collection – Noir Exquis – and I think it’s love. Smokyish, coffee maple syrup wrapped dark vanilla with Duchaufours trademark transparency. Lovers of Bvlgari Black, VC&A Midnight in Paris, Armand Basi Homme, YSL Body Kouros, and fragrances of their ilk should definitely give it a go. Smitten.
    Oh my.
    Oh my oh my.

So, a question. Does fragrance induced deep and heavy breathing make me a perfert?

I recently tried L’Artisan Bucoliques de Provence, and was surprised. I haven’t seen much talk about it here (maybe I wasn’t paying attention?), but Bucoliques is another nice one!

One of my closest friends who is highly versed in essential oils told me that Amyris is in the same family as catnip…so that would explain my addictive and insane reaction to it every time I wear it (which has been every day since Saturday!)…so again on my wrists today “Armpits and Orange Essence” (thank you, hajusuuri, for coming up with that hysterical phrase :) !!) and on my sweater Assam of India for the sandalwood in the base…now I know how I was able to wear Assam for the entire summer…it is just perfect…and equally as great in the cold weather!

    Cocoa Sandalwood by SSS

Had a fantastic night last night at a benefit, I wore my most beloved sandalwood Samsara, which was fitting since this benefit was for Tibet and Buddhism. Also sported my new lipstick stain by YSL

I see the Neimans is having there gift card event and I will be sitting on my hands and not participating. Repeat that mantra several times today. ;)

Warm and comforting (and Chrismassy) SL Mandarin Mandarine today.

Is it OK to ask a perfume-gift-related question here? Any ideas for someone who prefers sheer, slightly tart, slightly green, but mostly clean scents? Her most recent favorite was Jo Malone Elderflower and Gooseberry (discontinued limited edition). Grateful for any suggestions!

She might like Jo Malone’s new one: Neroli and Basil. The Hermes colognes might be a safe choice too, as in Neroli Dore, Rhubarbe Ecarlate, etc.

This is probably not very original suggestion, but how about just another Jo Malone? Wood Sage & Sea Salt or Lime Basil & Mandarin are two of my favs. I find them both pretty, clean and easy to wear.
Also second, or third the Ateliers or any of the Hermes Jardin series.

Oh, I think it’s gorgeous. I’m not a jasmine kind of gal, ordinarily, but there’s a warmth about Perfectly Marvelous that transforms the jasmine into something hugely wearable, imo.
-At least I hope so. The last time I tried it was yonks ago, but I’ve just bought a 100ml bottle at a 37% discount for a forum split, and I’m ending up with 35ml. In my defence, I got it primarily to send a sample as part of a Christmas present to my cousin, who loves jasmine and lily of the valley, and has finally parted company with her once-beloved Diorissimo.

SotD is Elixir des Merveilles and I am really liking it!
I think the original will always be my favorite, as it is an easy go-to, but this is coming in a close second.
I was lucky enough to get a 15 ml bottle on eBay last week, now I just need a bottle of the Eau Claire to complete the quartet. Does anyone know if Hermes has stopped making that one? I don’t see it on their website or Sephora anymore, just online discounters or eBay.????

Yay for Merveilles! I love the 15 ml bottles from Hermes. If you’re feeling nervous about Eau Claire disappearing you could check with Hermes. I contacted Hermes via email last year because a favorite scent (Vanille Galante) disappeared from their website. They kindly replied that it was still in production but was removed from the website for a short time because there were no bottles available for sale online. The boutiques still had it in stock.

Yes, I love those 15 ml bottles! There is something about their symmetry and pretty gold and silver caps that I find very appealing. I could easily see lining the entire length of my dresser with them???? Next on to the Jardin line. Or the Hermessence. Decisions, decisions.

Testing Violaceum 2 from the new L’Artisan collection. So far very promising. Pronounced violet/iris but not too sweet. A bit of leather, a bit of spice. A hint of something herbal-medicinal a few moments ago (mint?) but it seems to be softening now. Could be a nice addition to my growing arsenal of violet scents. Fingers crossed ‘cuz I loved to see that bottle on my dresser!

Has anyone tried any of the others from the Natura Fabularis line?

What an incredibly adorable monkey to brighten up the day a bit!

I haven’t been around much lately–I’ve been slowly losing my enchantment with work and a lot of things I normally enjoy have fallen by the wayside a bit. I treated myself to a shopping trip last night, though, and picked up a bottle of MAC Velvet Teddy, so that’s my scent of the day. It’s definitely big on honey, and while it’s right on the edge of being too sweet, it never quite crosses that line for me.

I tried this one, Creme de Nude, and My Heroine yesterday. Creme de Nude was too sweet for me, and My Heroine vacillated between something I really liked, and something I didn’t like at all (I think I might not have liked the particular leather accord they used). I smelled the other three on paper and made the executive decision not to try them on skin. :)

Wearing Epic today while having a chuckle. My 7 year old nephew tried to pull a fast one on me. He asked for the Halo video game for Christmas this year. My sister’s jaw dropped to the floor when he asked. I’m thinking that someone in his class might be playing it and he wants it. Who let’s a 7 year old play a violent video game?

I have a doctors appointment today, and their office is “scent free,” i.e. patients are told to refrain from wearing “scented products” to appointments. I am not their ideal customer. Since all of my laundry and household cleaning products are scent free, and since my doctor always smells like vanilla and musk, I believe I’m entitled to two discreet sprays of Lyric.

When I encounter places like that, I will spray on my undergarments and light spritzes on my clothes. Especially when I was having surgery, they said no fragrance on the skin…….but they never said no fragrance on your clothes! Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

I have a tiny 1/4oz bottle of vintage extrait in a glass stopper bottle that I am using sparingly. The top notes are a little burnt but the rest of the development is gorgeous. I wonder how long I have until the juice takes a turn for the worse, or just evaporate. Maybe that I should try to use it up sooner rather than later?

G’morning, all. Second to last day of the academic year.! Today one of my favourite (am I allowed favourites?) doctoral students takes her viva. She is exceedingly anxious, not just nervous, and even though the examiners’ written reports are excellent, I am beside myself with nerves for her, because if she dries up, she might walk out with a worse result than she started with. I am therefore wearing the gorgeous, warm, reassuring Bois des Iles, and I’m trying to arrange my features into a calm and encouraging expression. Sometimes I wish I had inherited my mother’s disposition, not my dear old dad’s. This is one of those times!

I had a random thought about sandalwood this week. For me, it’s always had a strong association with the smell of fresh laundry straight after it comes off the line smelling of the sun and clean air. I know that objectively, that’s a silly thought, but a couple of days ago, I suddenly realised that mum used to keep the sheets and my “best” clothes in a wooden chest, and now I’m thinking the chest must have been made of sandalwood. I will have to chase this notion down with my sisters. They’re older than I am, and they might have registered the facts of the case. I hope I’m right.

Two more days! I can do anything for two days.

    Dear Sandalwood,

I owe you an apology. After a terrible experience with Santal 33 (how could it turn to pickles on my skin? PICKLES!), I thought that I did not like you. I thought you were not for me. I couldn’t understand other people’s love for you. I grumbled when I read this Friday’s project because I only had one perfume that could fit.

And then, last night, I decided to search luckyscent to see what perfumes contained a sandalwood note in order to try to participate further. I was shocked that I own 28 samples (just from brands carried by luckyscent) and one full bottle with a sandalwood note. Of those 28 samples, 4 are on my full-bottle wishlist.

So sandalwood, I have come to realize that you are the supporting element in many perfumes I love. These scents would not be so beautiful without your contribution – you’re like the bass player in an excellent band. I could still listen to the song, but I wouldn’t find it as exciting. Like Rancid without Matt Freeman or the Red Hot Chili Peppers without Flea, the perfumes you are in would be bland and unremarkable if you were absent.

So thank you for being a beautiful part of today’s scent, Marfa by Memo. I adore this stuff – it’s a slightly austere white flower scent with an introspective edge. (I’m not giving Santal 33 another chance, however. No way.)

    Sincerely,
    Sistine

You know, I’m a huge sandalwood fan and I don’t much care for Santal 33. Plus, it doesn’t smell all that much like sandalwood. So don’t assume you only like it as a supporting player!

(On the other hard, really good sandalwood is now so hard to find that maybe you’re better off seeing it that way.)

I like sandalwood, but I’m with Robin on Santal 33 not smelling like sandalwood. Smells like dry cedar with a pinch of dill and coconut to me. And most times when sandalwood is listed as a base note, I don’t smell it there, either. I usually smell some other generic wood of sorts, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just isn’t a sandalwood smell. My best reference to what it actually smells like is my little bottle of sandalwood EO.

Wearing Jacomo Parfum Rare Coeur de Parfum again and rereading Christos’s review on Memory of Scent. Here, he explains how the perfume captured his scent memory of Geneva during the Escalade, a holiday reenactment that celebrates defeating the attacking army of Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy in 1602.

“Nothing I can actually transmit with my words can show how different the city is during these celebrations. Geneva, not one of the liveliest cities in the world, is flooded with excited people of all ages. Next to tourists and real Genevois dressed in their plain clothes, suddenly a colourful group of participants of the Cortège (the Procession) surprise you dressed in their costumes and carrying real muskets. And the muskets are actually fired! The smell of gun-powder fills the air and meets the smell of roasting chestnuts and warm spiced wine. The chilled December night air is thick with human smells, warm and intense. The narrow streets of the old city are crammed with people and animals that prepare for the parade. And right there I experienced for the first time the indolic side of horse manure. Not what you would imagine as a vile, dirty smell, but rather the floral, light mesmerizing smell of indoles as they are found in perfume. The cold air, the smell of gunpowder, open fire and spiced wine combined magically with the naturally occurring indoles of the animalic presence in the festivities to recreate the warm scent of Coeur de Parfum almost to the last detail. I always associate the bright, resinous patchouli of Coeur de Parfum (and Coco) with cold weather. It feels exactly like sitting in front of a bonfire in a cold winter night. Half frozen, half red-hot. I could suddenly pick up notes of hay and honey mixing with the flowers and animalic leather.”

I’m wearing EL Sensuous Noir today. Not quite sure yet what I’m going to do for Friday. I think I have a sandalwood or two, but I’m realizing I don’t have much in my collection. I think an issue for me is that while I can smell natural sandalwood, I’m anosmic or nearly so to some synthetic sandalwood molecules, so some sandalwood perfumes aren’t much of anything to me, like Atelier Cologne’s Santal Carmin or Nirvana Black, but then others like the SL Santals I can smell just fine. Which reminds me, I need to find my Santal Mysore decant.

SOTD has been Penhaligon’s “Halfeti”. On the one hand, this is a darn sight better smelling than almost anything I’ve tried from Penhaligon’s before. In fact, let me not be mealy-mouthed: it smells really nice, and on my skin not ‘just another’ rose-saffron-oud blend as it seems lighter and spicier. On the downside, it only managed half a day, boo!

    Top: bergamot, grapefruit, saffron, cardamom, atermisia and cypress;

I just received a sample of TF Santal Blush today, so that’s what I’m wearing. The first 15 minutes or so were unpleasantly strong, but now it has softened to a soft sandalwood with perhaps a touch of cumin in the background (but not too much, at least for me anyhow). :-)

I like that one a lot and own a bottle. I have to dig it out of the cupboard and wear it on Friday! Thanks for the reminder.

Duh! I have this scent and just realized it has sandlewood (hence the name). What was I thinking or not thinking? This is one of my favorites! I will save it for Friday.
      Farouche, you smell fantastic!

It’s a bit late in the day but this afternoon’s mail brought my gift set from Luckyscent along with generous samples of ORLOV parfum and wow is that stuff fantastic! I had sniffed it in Harrod’s in June and kept the scent strip on hand for a few weeks just to remember the beauty. It is really a shame that it’s just so darned expensive. I’m not at all a white flower person but the orange blossom in this is very delicate and at the same time heady–but not cloying. I love it!

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

I needed spine strengthening and it worked. I need it tomorrow as well but I may layer with 31RC. Box of Eels EDT had been waiting to get invited to the party (be patient my lovely one, you will get your turn).

Dior Sauvage for me today. I can’t decide if I like it or not, but I’ll keep wearing it until I figure it out. I just got a deluxe sample set of Bvlgari EdPs and I can’t wait to try them!
