Wednesday scent of the day 12/7

Posted by Robin on 7 December 2016 202 Comments

Lush Northern Lights bath bomb

It's Hump Day! The week is flying by, and there are 24 days remaining in the year. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm continuing my week of 2016 purchases with Lush Kerbside Violet.

Reminder: 12/9 will be Best Buy Friday — wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2016. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Not sure if anyone else has reported this or is having the same issue, but the screen is rearranged now, the advertisements are on the left and the blog is on the right. I’ve tried from different browsers on different machines, so pretty sure it isn’t a local problem.
Just wanted to let you know things may look different, not sure if this was intentional or not.

I’m seeing that, too, girardEAU. Worse yet, what used to be merely a sidebar on the right is now a left-hand column of equal width to the blog posts.

In order to get rid of the distractions on the left, I’ve zoomed the screen so that the blog post fills the entire width.

Yes, had some WordPress trouble, sorry about that.

It should be fixed now — clear your browser cache (in Windows, you can press CTRL + F5) and you will see a fixed screen.

Had a good vacation day yesterday, went to café Lalo on the Westside, and stop by Sephora and tried Tom Ford’s orchid Soliel. It was very nice! I’ve still yet to try Shanghai Lily, The only other TF on my to try list.

Today I am in a bottle that I bought this year, Gurlain’s Limon Verde from the AA line.

Tea is The Tibet by MF

Confession: almost bought several YSL vinyl lip glosses yesterday , but the line was too long so I put them back

      Sounds like a lovely day!
I love the YSL lip glosses too, I splurged on ‘carmin session’ in the autumn, it’s a lovely everyday plum colour.

That sounds like a very fun day.
Too bad you didn’t get the lip glosses, but maybe that was for the better?

I, unfortunately, am allergic to them. I bought one a couple years ago and it made my lips get all itchy and rashy. Most lip glosses do that too me nowadays.

I have similar trouble, and have found that I can’t tolerate most sunscreens in lip products, and also can’t tolerate the mica they put in to make the gloss shimmery. It happens with eye shadows too (the mica thing, not the sunscreen thing).

I found that some eyeshadows that are very shimmery make my eyelids irritated. I thought it may be the mica. I have found that Shiseido shimmery cream color doesn’t irritate but its expensive. Its a trial for me. Most of the time I go bare with my lids and use a eye pencil

Oh goodness, you have my sympathy. It’s not easy when allergic to many common ingredients found in make up and SPF is definitely becoming more prevalent.

I generally stay far away from shimmery eye make up. I know that’s boring since it limits me to mattes, which can be very hard to find these days! However, I prefer a very subtle look so I’m generally ok staying away from mica.

I’ve tried several glosses – YSL and the Coco Rouge Lip Shine (or whatever they are called these days – by Chanel) and both have set me off.

When you’re as old as I am, shimmery eye shadows are just not advisable – they just make all the folds and wrinkles more noticeable! :) Matte eye shadows ARE hard to find though – why is that?? Laura Mercier makes some very nice ones, but other than that it seems everyone wants shimmer. On lip colors, the glosses are all problematic for me, but if I stick with Bobbi Brown lipstick and apply it on top of a coat of Paula’s Choice Lip and Body Balm (best stuff in the world for chapped lips, imho), it kind of mimics lip gloss and I don’t get the rash-y little red bumps.

Sampling L’Attessa today. It is working well with the rain.

Went to Oleana,a fabulous restaurant, last night and one of the meze had smoked honey on the plate. It was so delicious that we asked for extra honey and now my guy is going to ask his coworker who has smoker to make him some.

Another easy way to make smoky honey is with Lapsang Souchong tea – pour 1 cup honey over 3 Tbsp lapsang souchong tea leaves, seal and store in a dark place for 12 days, then strain the honey. I have made it and it’s delicious! The recommend use is to drizzle the smoky honey over fig, arugula, and parmesan on toast. It is from the cookbook Steeped, which I would highly recommend it you like cooking with tea :)

I feel a bit guilty that I’m just wearing Mohur as a comfort scent. It’s almost in the same catogory as Lumiere Blanche for me – so easy to wear, such a lovely “texture”. I mostly smell a creamy, softly spicy rose and gentle woods – even as an extrait, it’s quite faint to my nose and I’m sure I’m missing many nuances. But it’s very nice even with my limited smelling capacity.

Amouage Journey woman, one of my all time favourites, I’ve nearly finished my sample, hopefully I will receive a bottle for my birthday next year.
Tea of the Day is a Ceylon orange pekoe, from The Proper Tea Company, based here in East Sussex.
I’m also burning a local soy Christmas spice candle, which smells lovely, but has a weird piece of flat wood as a burner instead of a wick, which I’ve decided I don’t like. Still, the price, at £6.50 was quite reasonable.

I don’t know about Journey specifically. Other perfumes that I’ve followed over many years, such as Guerlain Vetiver, Habanita, J’Adore, and Femme, have changed significantly over time. IFRA and accountants keep tightening the screws.

There are some treasures to watch on Amazon’s streaming service. I just stumbled upon the 5 episodes of a series called Prime Japan. The titles are Ramen, Ryokan, Sushi, Design, and Made in Japan. Much of the audio is in Japanese with subtitles. Very relaxing listening, and easy on the eyes, too.

On me it’s a cosmetic rose/violet plus a plush rice powder note. Kind of sweet, very wearable. Love it in the winter.

Due to an approaching snow storm, I am in the mist of an anxiety attack. I was to overwhelmed to pick a perfume this morning. I ended up grabbing Salvatore Ferragamo Emozione. It’s nice and unobtrusive. I also am wearing Josie Maran vanilla hand cream. It’s a little pricey, but the best hand cream I’ve found.

    Wednesday!

    1) So cold outside, and everything is covered in frost. It looks lovely, but brrr! I will be doing a quick 3 mile run outside tonight- all to indulge in the steam bath after!

    2) Am in Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose and Oud- which seems perfect for the chilly weather.

    3) Breakfast is a cup of steel cut oatmeal with cream and raisins and a big mug of hot, strong builder’s tea with almond milk.

As a fellow runner – I salute you for running in cold weather! A hot bath afterwards always makes it SO worth the effort. I would totally be out there too BUT I’ve developed Achilles tendinitis so I’m on rest for the winter months (but still doing strength training).

Your breakfast sounds very good and even though it’s healthy it also seems comfort food-y.

A little warmer today than yesterday, and certainly drier! (Shalimar Light was really good in yesterday’s cold rain, but I really should find a new home for that unopened backup bottle – I still like it, but it’s taken me 7 years to knock down this 75ml bottle to half full, and I have all that vintage Emeraude anyway…)

Today is delicious SSS Tabac Aurea.

I realized I have one 2016 purchase that is very special: ERIS Parfums Ma Bête. I also like one of the other ERIS Parfums very much; I forget whether it was Belle de Jour or Night Flower.

    http://www.yesterdaysperfume.com/yesterdays_perfume/2016/03/introducing-eris-parfums-belle-de-jour-night-flower-and-ma-b%C3%AAte.html

The line was founded by Barbara Herman, founder of the blog Yesterday’s Perfume and author of Scent and Subversion. I got to meet her and try the whole line at a trunk show hosted by Arielle Shoshana. Luckyscent carries the line and has samples.

Still have to go to Walmart at lunch, for some gift wrap and other little things….Wish me luck! LOL I find that midday shopping is better than fighting the after work crowds in the evening, when my energy level is low and my patience is lower….. :)

In Houston, Walmart (which a lot of them stay open 24 hours) is always busy no matter what time you go there. And, they never have enough checkers. I am a Target type of gal. I usually only go to Walmart if Target doesn’t have what I need. So, God bless you strong-willed individuals who fight the crowds and long lines at Walmart. I just don’t have the patience.

Where I live, there are more crowds and much longer lines at Target than at Walmart, but the lines at Target still move faster. Not a Walmart fan, but that might be because our store is so woefully understaffed.

Morning, all. Woke to a rainy, steaming morning, with a low, brooding sky. I thought beautiful Bel Respiro might counter the gloom, but it isn’t quite hefty enough. Should have chosen Fate, I think, but never mind. I smell lovely and Fate will still be here tomorrow. Apparently it’s going to rain then too.

I went to Smith and Caughey yesterday to buy a gift for a colleague and met a stranger who was trying Galop (it continues to enchant me, by the way). He mentioned Luca Turin’s blog, knew NST, named Christine Nagel as the perfumer at Hermes, discussed the saffron-rose-leather notes in Galop….it stands to reason that there had to be more perfumistas in A-NZ than Angelique, Gaynor, Kanuka, Morgan and me., and here is one (that’s ungrammatical, but you see what I mean). Dear Unknown Perfumista, if you’re lurking, do de-cloak. I’d love to hear if you succumbed to the deliciousness of Galop or went with L’Envol!

Chanel Coco EDP, current version. A 2016 first time purchase, and a trip down memory lane. I loved it from the moment it launched in the 80s, but it became the signature scent of several close friends, so I felt I had to pass. But 32 years later, Coco’s loss of ubiquity is a win for me. Patience rewarded.

Now that I’m in my 50’s, I am very aware that my “quirky old lady tastes” which were charming in my 20’s and 30’s are now just plain old lady and need a bit of a rethink. But I’ve decided not to care when it comes to scent, fruity pink juices be damned.

I have had such a happy and exciting perfume year in 2016. All of my purchases have given me so much pleasure . Most of my purchases were blind buys and that adds a certain frisson ….Musc Nomade and L’ Ambre Extreme and Al Oudh. Love them . Monsieur Li. Even Poison Girl makes me laugh when I think about how I ended up with a leopard skin coat. So…what fun! Wearing BE LOVED today from a sample. It’s not too bad, eh? Three friends are coming to stay tonight and I’m putting up a tent in the garden ….for me. Seriously. They are all such chatter boxes that I will take my dogs, ipad ( best invention for camping as you don’t need a torch) sleeping bags, flask of coffee and Journey with me and go and listen to the hedgehogs and the morepork. Bliss.

Serge Lutens ISM (best buy of the year) on one wrist, Frederic Malle Iris Poudre (sample) on the other. ISM wins for me, no contest :D I find Iris Poudre too soapy.

Did you dab or spray Iris Poudre?

I dabbed it on my wrist. I sprayed it on paper at a counter before, and had more or less the same impression. Do you have a preferred method?

In L’Occitane Immortelle de Corse, thanks to the generous Hajusuuri. It’s a perfect fit for today’s sunny and cool weather.

Yay! In answer to your question yesterday, the L’AP samples that came in the puff format was not from a magazine. IIRC, I got them from Henri Bendel.

Ah, OK. I think they’re a fun form of sample. It would be cool if they could be made to be recyclable or biodegradable!

Happy “Hump Day” Everyone! Today was my first day at physical therapy and boy-oh-boy! I hurt sooooo bad, but I know its all worth it. The best thing was that I was able to get my same physical therapists that I had 2 years ago from my other leg.
My SOTD is Tardes by Carner Barcelona. This is my first time wearing a scent from this perfumer. This perfume is described as being “peaceful and harmonious” and indeed it is. I definitely get the almond, rose, and plum notes. Perfect scent for the holidays. :)

Good luck with the PT! I really like Tardes. I keep going back and forth about a FB with that one. You smell lovely!

SOTD has been Ex Idolo “Ryder”, which I have enjoyed a lot in the few moments peace I’ve had on a second very long, very intense day. Notes are: tobacco, jasmine, amber, resins, woodsy notes, olibanum and vanilla.

I can’t believe how cold it is in the office today! I know that it usually takes about 24 hours for the office AC/Heating system to adjust for the cooler/warmer weather, and tomorrow it should be back to normal but I’m worried if I even capable of drinking the amount of tea necessary to maintain my body temperature in a “workable” condition?

Bvlgari Black, which I wear because of the SOTD comments from the recent couple of days, helps to keep my spirit up though.

It’s very hot in the office in the morning so I have a mini fan to cool things down for the first hour. The heat could also be that I normally would just have power-walked 1.3 miles all cozy in my coat!

SotE = Eau de Guerlain which I hope energizes me for the evening. It smells deliciously like lemon drop candies at the moment. I must be hungry.

I was unscented this morning as I went to the dentist for a cleaning. The hygienist caught me sniffing perfume scent strips in Vanity Fair magazine as I waited in the lobby. I liked one of the scents but can’t remember what it was. Not the Burberry. The Prada? It shall remain a mystery. Oh well.

Ha! “caught me sniffing perfume strips”! Before I fell into the rabbit hole, the magazines used to overwhelm me with waves of perfumey perfume strips that I asked to get the version without any scented strips.

I like to hope the perfume strips are getting better. When they were new they were awful, Giorgio-cough-Giorgio, I would rip them out of magazines and throw them in the garbage bin outside the house. Gah.

Once I left one on the floor and our male cat hissed and backed away from it while the female cat tried very delicately yet determinedly to cover up the offending smell, as if it belonged in the kitty litter box. Ahem.

And thanks to Isabella’s comment above about Black Cashmere I remembered the scent strip I liked was Cashmere Mist! A surprise because I’ve not liked it when sniffed from the bottle. Must try on a wrist or perhaps I should look for a lotion.

SOTD = Chanel No. 22 EDT

It is one of my best buys in 2016. I just made it before everything switched to EDP. I have not yet tried the EDP. I only wore 2 spritzes but could probably go up by one more.

No. 22 is unmistakably a Chanel, sharing DNA with No. 5 (hello aldehydes!). If I were to recreate this, I would start with a bit of de-violeted Guerlain L’Heure Bleue, a healthy dose of No. 5 and topped off with a spritz of 31RC.

I have a new “toy”! My Jo Loves Discovery Set arrived today! 9 atomizer samples (they look just like the Jo Malone samples) and a certificate for a 50 mL bottle. It is easy to redeem (via phone, online or in-person) and shipping is free! A huge thanks to pixel for mentioning that the website with service to the U.S. is up and running although the Discovery Sets were out of stock then.

Scent twins! I am also enjoying Kerbside violet today and yesterday. It is actually lovely layered over lavender body lotion. I felt utterly purple!
