Monday scent of the day 11/7

Posted by Robin on 7 November 2016 298 Comments

carrot pencil case

Happy Monday, all, and Happy Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in the fabulous Honoré des Prés I Love Les Carottes.

Reminder: 11/11 will be Iris Friday — wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Shibu carrot pencil cases are $7.90 each at YesStyle.

I went to Sullivan St tea and spice shop over the weekend and I am enjoying China 5 Peaks green tea. Very lovely. I did use my thermometer to take the temperature of the water, the leaves seemed delicate.

I am in Hepcat Phlur perfume, from a generous NST’er.
    Tobacco, whiskey, cherry…

I keep one of those variable temperature kettles, they are lovely for that purpose if you drink lots of green or oolong tea.

      Hepcat sounds fun!

I have one of these, too, and it also holds the temp for up to an hour. It was my husband’s idea to buy it and when I saw the prices on them I balked. It was worth ever penny and then some – one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. I’ve also discovered that I don’t hate green tea – I just hate it when it’s burned and overbrewed.

Good morning! I love it when we set the clocks back; I didn’t have to drag the kids out of bed! SOTD is vintage Shiseido Murasaki. It’s so good I just wonder why I don’t wear it more!

SL Iris Silver Mist, which I don’t wear often enough, mainly because I only have a partial bell jar, just about one-quarter full.

Has anyone tried the most recent version? Those black travel atomizers are tempting.

Glad to be reminded of HdP Carottes. I need to wear that this week, too.

I have two of the black atomizers and really like that they keep the scent away from the light, BUT they’re almost too big for travelling and if you have more than one you can’t easily tell what’s inside. Getting one for free would be nice, though.

Yes, I have the BK travel atomizers, which are also a bit heavy for travel. Their real advantage keeping the perfume readily accessible and safe from light right on my dresser top, and without taking up much space.

On the road with my husband, who abhors all scents, so I’m commando EXCEPT that I can get away with a few drops of Smashing beard oil by Beards and Beavers: it smells pleasantly like Fendi Theorema or a Terry’s Chocolate Orange and is therefore unobjectionable.

It’s not expensive ($25 for a one-ounce dropper bottle) and you could definitely use it for a skin or hair oil: jojoba and argan oils, the usual. Not greasy at all. The company makes lots of other great simple scents, too: Cowboy is vanilla tobacco, Twice Baked is bakery vanilla, Greaser is espresso and sambuca.

It is cold in Paris today, low of 1 to high of 6 degrees (C) and even snow flurries forecast. I’m in Aeon “Aeon 001”, a great tobacco-vetiver concoction with a resinous background, even better in November than when I first tried it back in September. Notes are vetiver, white flowers, smoke, spicy notes and resins.

This is one of the Blooms’ September pack that I’ll be trying this week. The theme is ‘Luca Turin approved’ as they are all scents LT praised in his blog (sadly stopped now). Only one of them lists Iris as a note so I will sorta-kinda-maybe join in the community project on Friday. :^)

I am sure most NST folk would make more of the opportunity of being in Paris than I have. I should be flitting from palace to perfume shop to museum. I am actually living a life of chasing people to give me stats on milestones or data migration or training completions so I can provide slides (inevitable flawed) to endless meetings (which somehow contrive to take up more time than was planned but make fewer timely decisions than are needed).

From next week my new AirBnB will be next to the Louvre so I will at least see tourist Paris for the 5 minutes it takes to walk to the commuter station. The office is moving to St Denis, which is an unsavoury neighbourhood and I am not going to live there. Except for June, I’ve been staying in the outskirts close to the previous office locations, which is no hardship but not terribly exciting either.

Blech, and I thought Toulouse was miserable this week (highs of 10ish and light rain). I, luckily, am heading to Barcelona tomorrow for a conference, where the highs are at about 18 and the sun will shine all week. \o/

Incidentally, I saw another vegetarian restaurant and thought of you! I haven’t tried it out yet, but if you ever come back, there’s a new place for you to eat :)

Yes, our naïve plan of basing ourselves in Paris and going on weekend excursions all around France did not survive contact with reality. Too much crap going on needing one of us to be in England most of the time. We haven’t even made it down the road to Chartres. :(

I’m sorry to hear that :( I had a similarly naïve plan before moving to Toulouse. “I’ll pop up to Paris once a month,” I said, as I turned down a doctoral opportunity in the city of love. (I’ve been outside of the airport in Paris three times in the past 2.5 years.)

They have peach and iris in common. Iris Gris is much softer, makes you want to wear a perfect couture wool suit. Mon Parfum Chéri par Camille has patchouli and is edgier.

DSH Scent of Hope is a recreation of Iris Gris that is very close.

In Iris Gris, there is supposed to be a balance so that it’s neither peach/lactones nor iris. But if you get a different variety of fruit in MPCPC, you might be smelling more carefully than I am, admittedly.

After spending last week celebrating Halloween by testing every fun size candy manufactured, Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day is another reason to continue the party! Also, my son finished the NYC Marathon- his first one ever- and the joy on his face reminded me of his expression when he took his first steps!

SOTD is Slumberhouse Kiste. The dark dense macerated floral fruit and tobacco is perfect for this ( finally) transitioning weather.

There were 50,000 runners from all over the world and as they finished, they, whomever may have accompanied them, and spectators poured into the streets. It was refreshingly friendly and cooperative mass of people. I suppose on some level it was like a meet up of perfumistas who don’t know each other, but have a common passion.

I am wearing Heeley Iris de Nuit, which is a soft violet-iris, with a cedar-musk background. Very nice–I am glad I dug out my little decant.

I am drinking a mug of mixed end of the bag second-flush Darjeeling from samples. No bad. Someday I need to try blending teas with a little more care instead of dumping the last few grams of a bag into a communal tin.

I usually use classical music to drown out more distracting noises; I live in an old building, so sound seeps in easily. I do have to stay away from pieces I love too much, as they distract me, and could definitely not handle Ede’s music :)

Your tea sounds delicious. We are hearing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto 4 next weekend. I love his piano concertos. We saw Behzod Abduraimov play one (No 2? I think) this spring and he was awe-inspiring. I was on the edge of my seat and in tears the entire time. He’s a young (late 20s/early 30s?) pianist from Tashkent. If the opportunity arises to see him, one ought take advantage of it.

I’ve never seen him! Thanks for the tip. No. 2 is my absolute FAVORITE. Not just of Rachmaninoff, but of any music ever. I’ve been listening to it for the past two decades with varying levels of emotional engagement (it gets more poignant when my emotions are more fraught, of course). Have a great time at no. 4! I feel nos. 4 and 1 don’t get enough love.

It’s kind of warm here by the afternoon, but our morning temp was below freezing with a hard frost, so it works from going cold to warm and into bed later. It has remarkable tenacity.

    1) Grrr. I am hold currently for tier 2 tech support for an internal issue. I frigging hate this, and the systems in place to do the support seem not to support us getting back to work and making money, but to assure the system managers that their system is followed. GRRRR.

    2) Am in Dark Amber +Ginger Lily.

Monday! I should be really well set up for a week of wearing iris. One of my favourite notes! Starting the week with Parfums DelRae Mythique. Bit of a “fruity” iris and doesn’t last all day, but that’s only an excuse to reapply often.

I’m in Opus I today. Finished off the sample this morning.

In my attempts to pare down what I have, I’ve gotten down to one small box of samples. I have some 10ml ones I’m looking forward to using when the weather gets colder. Some I may wait until spring/summer to wear since they are lighter.
All of this means I’m almost down to bottles only now (plus the travel sets). Time to bring them all up from the basement now that the whole house is much cooler during the day.

    Gooooood Morning NST!

I have really missed you guys. I am working on a great assignment, but it is knocking the wind out of me. In perfume events, my husband gave me a beautiful bottle of Chanel Beige parfum for my 50th (yes, to all you young’uns… there is such an august age), and we brought the kids into the city to SFMOMA. Lunch at In Situ, which was hilarious and fun. My other big perfume adventure started with a gushing main break outside my front door. Called the water company to shut off the water, and a plumber to help me figure out what to do. The plumber arrived first and was super helpful. She (yep, a she) turned off the water main, helped me sort out who to call to dig up the stone path, etc etc, until… she got a whiff of the Dior Mitzah I had applied that morning. She HATED it. She said I was poisoning her and everyone else in the world. She said she’d have to wash all of her equipment because it would make her sick. I was a pawn of Big Fragrance. I was forcing my worldview on others. I was cancer. I stank. (Okay, the last she said with a smile.) And that was the end of that.

Today I am in Rose De Siwa, waiting for other plumbers to call me back…

Wow! I’m speechless! Well, perhaps not speechless, exactly….but, really? A complete stranger felt entitled to say such things to you, about you, when she’s a guest on Your Property? Truly, when you’re at home, if you want to have bats hanging from the ceiling and wear nothing but a winsome smile, it’s no one’s business to remark on. Please tell me this she-plumber wasn’t armed with anything more dangerous than a plunger and a monkey wrench! The thought of a personality like that having access to a blow torch is too chilling to contemplate! On the plus side, though, how deeply cool that there are women in their own plumbing businesses.

You know, there was a bit of a maternal vibe going. That is she was speaking with maternal concern about my oppressive, room-emptying, carcinogenic habit. She also recommended several non-Western medical curatives for wound treatment (no wounds evident, just something to talk about). Also, she spoke at length about the impending election. It was an advice-filled morning indeed!

Totally cool to have women plumbers!

You know, I thought if you when I got my first whiff of Siwa! I think it is similar to Lumiere Noire and A la rose. It is fruitier than LN (notes say lychee) and has a violet note with a teeny hint of powder, not found in A la rose. It smells luxurious to my nose. Rose luxury. Weirdly, and this is of course highly subjective, but it smells more luxurious than the two from Kurkdjian’s MFK label. If you cannot get enough rose, then you’ll love it. If you are picky about your roses, this is an unabashedly pink rose with violets and a bit of pink fruit, and a teensy weensy bit of face powder.

I am with you on this one. Rose de Siwa is a little girly for me personally, but I think it is beautiful and more interesting than A la rose or Lumiere Noire.

Happy 50th! Great times are in store for you. :)

As for your plumber, as someone who has had her sensitivity ups and downs, I’d guess her continual exposure to noxious, immune-system assaulting substances has exaggerated her response to very different smells. ‘Tis the season of gratitude.

Round 2. Of testing La Femme Prada at the department store…an attempt to get my hands on the tester. Different sales assistant.
I point at the bottle at the shelf and ask if I can test La Femme Prada. She looks at the bottle and tells me it’s called Prada Milano. They don’t have a perfume called La Femme Prada. I ask if I can try Prada Milano. She says ‘Yes’ .
    Score!
She gives me a tiny soray on my wrist and then gives herself three decent sprays and returns bottle to shelf behind counter.
I ask myself what Robin would do…i already know the answer.
I ask about prices/ sizes and then ask if I could just look at the bottle as I am curious about the way it looks.
    That is a lie.
I am handed the bottle and I give myself four decent sprays.
The S A smiles takes the bottle back and has another spray.
I ask once more about Angel Muse. We talk about Christmas coffret sets etc.
I re- sniff my arm. It’s OK but not me.
…Next installament: I ask to try CDG BLack Pepper at the posh shop and fail to get my hands on the tester! TBC

Dang. If that’s what it took to do some testing, I’d skip it altogether. The only kind I do in public is at Nordstrom where they supply atomizers and I can wander through the perfume department making samples of whatever they have more or less unnoticed.

Come to think of it, that kind of interaction is why I stopped shopping at department store counters in my teens. I like to shop alone and be left alone.

Hello, hello, hello, and best of days to you all. I’m home, and though I don’t want to go to work, I’m glad to be here, with the cats and the space of our apartment and some different clothes. I loved my holiday, but tea made with leaves in a pot and our bed are some compensation for the return to this reality.

I have new perfumes to play with….let me see, shall I try out Dries van Noten or En Passant? Or is it an iris day? Ummmmm, En Passant, I think. The weather is changeable, and lilac seems suited to the warm sun and cold wind.

Off to work now. Oh dear.

I’m finally trying out Iris Prima (was shocked to see the release date of 2013 when I looked up the notes, as it feels like just last year), which I received in the swapmeet. You know, it is something I may normally find too boring, but on this Monday, it is just right. It’s pleasant and a bit sparkling, and it stays close to skin and doesn’t distract me. I probably won’t reach for it much except on tough Monday mornings when I can only handle something light and easy.

I have all of my irises for the week lined up and ready to go, but had a craving for Papillon Salome, so that’s what I’m wearing. It is really hitting the spot on a dark, gloomy, wet day.

Hope everyone gets through the next 36 hours without having a nervous breakdown. I’ve been pretty calm but am starting to get anxious. Regardless of how things go, I’ll be happy not to have a physical and electronic mailbox full of campaign ads come Wednesday. There are a couple of local candidates here who send (hard copy) flyers EVERY DAY. Every day. Really? You think anyone responds positively to getting 30 of the EXACT SAME 8 1/2″ x 11″ glossy heavyweight paper advertisement over the course of 1 month?

I’ve just been throwing what looks like junk mail into a pile. Whenever my nephew stops by to work (I pay him $7.50 per hour), he sorts through the mail, shreds what’s needs to be shredded and recycles the rest. I would have used him as a swap / split / freebie assistant but he does not like perfume and it would be tortuous to make him do it.

I enjoyed the combination. Coven coming through loud and clear and L’air as a mildly sweet hum in the background.
I went out to help my husband remove a huge fallen branch that was wedged in a cypress tree. I’m absolutely sure my cloud of fragrance repelled the heavy piece of chain that broke loose and whacked me in the back. It should have left me black and blue and all I have is a little trail of red welts across my upper back. Perfume armor really works! ;)

I also am really enjoying it. I gave it some good wear this past weekend in the cold and I think I prefer it to LADDM, myself.

Did you try the amber oil as well? If so, how do you like it?

Narciso EDP for me today. I used up the last of my gwp body cream. The body cream is as good, if not better than the edp. It can certainly just be worn on it’s own. While I’m at it, I will also give a thumbs up to the shower cream.

Waaaah! Late to the party again!

SOTD = SHL 777 Khol de Bahrein

I am doing 5 days of iris. Khol de Babrein is powdery amber sweet (reminds me of the hard shell of Jordan Almonds used for party favors), perfect for this cool day in NYC.

Deva and kpaint – I need to clarify that I mixed up the order of the type of soap I got from Solstice Scents – it’s actually cream whipped soap, not whipped cream soap! It actually has the texture of whipped cream, so there’s that.

Iris week will be a piece of cake for you. I hope you like the scent of your new soap since it is not what you thought you were getting.

I have some of that egg white soap that smells like chamomile, love it.

Oh, I just mixed up the name when I left the comment over the weekend. The scents were what I ordered: Sycamore Chai, Sycamore Sugarworks and Owl Creek Aleworks which all seem to no longer be available. I also have Foxcroft which is still available. So far I’ve used Foxcroft (half a jar left) and Sycamore Chai and they are really fabulous!

And I think I can do a month of Iris without repeating :-)

Cream whipped, whipped cream, it all sounds good to me. My Amber Flush was waiting for me when I got home from work today. I’m predicting yours will arrive tomorrow…????

I had a craving for Shalimar this morning. It was perfect for a clear cold morning and a busy day at work.
