Monday scent of the day 10/24

Posted by Robin on 24 October 2016 278 Comments

pumpkin

Happy Monday, and happy United Nations Day! (In the US, it's also Food Day. Do eat some food.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Etat Libre d'Orange Like This.

Reminder: 10/28 will be Treat Friday — wear a fragrance that reminds you of candy. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I employed the “hajusuuri method” this morning….misting the air with Rhubarb Ecarlate at home and walking through it and misting the air with Hanbury at work and walking through it (and a nod of gratitude to H and h for these beauties!) and both large samples are now drained…

In my quest to minimalize my possessions I am now taking a new approach to my perfumes and spraying/dousing with reckless abandonment in order to fully experience and appreciate them…no more using sparingly and saving for future reference for most of the samples I would not be able to afford in full bottle anyway! I am working my way through samples and decants in this fashion and will then move on to my full bottles.

Spraying with reckless abandonment is the ONLY way to go! I’ve got an atomiser and I’m not afraid to use it…

LOL! I love it because I can actually smell myself rather than having to furiously huff my wrists!

I am doing the same these days. Spraying with abandonment, so I reduce the amount of fragrances, especially full bottles, that I have.

I also upvote spraying with reckless abandon! I have also recently stopped rationing out my samples in order to “keep them as reference samples”. I’m not running a museum, and I get more out of the scents when I apply more.

actually I have gotten more comments today for actually wearing make-up (which is a rarity that only occurs when I have important meetings)…makes me wonder how I am viewed when I am NOT wearing make-up-LOL!

Hello, NST. I am EXCEEDINGLY grumpy this afternoon and have been dying for America to wake up so that NST can cheer me up. I’ve battled for much of today with a stupid hotel in Barcelona (where I’ll be going for a conference in a few weeks) with a payment system crappy enough that I’m starting to wonder if I really do trust them with my money. First their system wouldn’t accept a card; then their system overcharged my card while continuing to say online that I hadn’t paid anything at all. Also, apparently half an hour to them is > 1.5 h, so I keep having to call them. Grump grump grump.

I’m wearing the spectacularly gorgeous Larmes du Désert, but even that can’t cheer me up. Gahhhhh this is so frustrating! I hope to have this resolved before the end of the workday today. Cross your fingers for me, please.

Larmes du Désert is a lovely name for a fragrance. French language perfume names, and the imagery they bring to mind, tend to make me swoon. I’m imagining you smell fabulous. Hope your day is trending upward. :)

The truth of the matter is that you really don’t pay until you check out, so as long as you’ve got confirmation of your stay you can deal with the final payment onsite.

I’d love to be in your shoes anticipating a trip to the great city of Barcelona in a few weeks. Last I was there was in ’08 and it was fantastic on every level.

If it’s a credit card you should be able to call your credit card company and dispute the charge, I think. I’m so sorry for the tribulations!

Maybe you’re staying at the same botel I stayed at when I was there in July. Thank goodness all the charges went to my sister’s loyalty rewards program credit card because had they used mine, my card would have been cancelled because the billing nme would be wrong and they would have kept trying until the credit card company cuts it off. They mixed up my Middle Name (made it my First Name) and my First Name became my Last Name. This was a business hotel and they took my name off of my U.S. Passport which I am sure they’ve seen hundreds of thousands of times before.

That is the one I was thinking about. I think it was called something like Mandarin Chocolate Sherbet. It wasn’t really a sherbet, and it didn’t look chocolate at all, but black the way a licorice ice cream might look. But it tasted divine.

I remember getting that vibe when I layered Bigarade Concentree with Cuir Beluga. (I was having fun on a Cuir Beluga layering streak!) It reminded me of those orange shaped candies that come out at the holidays. Can’t remember the brand name though…..????

You ahould try Philosophy Fresh Cream with Atelier Cologne Orange Samguine. Or for more oooomph, iIndult Tihota with Orange Sanguine or even Atelier Cologne Mandarin Glace. Actually, for a fuller orange, use Guerlain Mandarine Basilic but you would need a creamier vanilla or spray Fresh Cream with abandon and then a litle spritz of Mandarin Basilic.

Thanks to a generous fragrance friend I recently tried Blood Orange Chocolat from Note Fragrances. I never thought I’d like a scent with a chocolate note, but I’m slowly being won over. Orange and chocolate make a very appealing scent combination, perhaps a perfect choice for Friday’s community project.

Blood Orange Chocolat has a lot of sugar to it, definitely sweet, but it is not giving me a toothache (nor a headache). I can smell orange and maybe honey, then the chocolate sort of reins in the sugar a little bit. Hope that helps.

It is supposed to have a coffee note that I’m not getting. The salty marine notes are drowning out everything else. I love the smell of coffee, although I can’t stand the taste, so I am rather disappointed. I think this one would be good for summer though.

I found the notes in this to create a very odd scent. It was just like nothing I’ve smelled before but not in a good way and yet not in a bad way.

The coffee is there but very mild.

I tried it first a while ago and found it very faint and short lived, but tried it this past Saturday and I was surprised that it was heftier and longer lasting than I remembered. Maybe they changed the formula?

While I don’t really know what a Starbuck’s Witch’s Hat is, I can sort see a picture of it in my head. It reminds me of my own fondness for finishing sorbets using a straw to the very last drop, even if that causes rather unwanted noises. Especially in posh restaurants.

FYI to Apple users, if you hold down the letter key (e, for example) a menu pops up with a range of possible diacritical-ized e’s, and you click on the one you want.

But I have baby pink nail polish with a glow-in-the-dark glittery top coat…..Does that count for anything? HA HA

Smelly review: Blind bought a bottle of SJP’s Lovely Sheer. The original Lovely was one of the very 1st perfumes I bought when I started collecting scents, and I still love it. Lovely Sheer is exactly what I hoped….a light, daytime/office appropriate version of the original. Only bummer is longevity. 2 hours and it’s completely gone. But it’s extremely inexpensive, so I guess I can live with reapplying as needed……

Don’t know what to wear!? This weekend I finally switched over to my fall/winter fragrances (just the ones I keep out on the dressing table) and it is an overwhelming array of beauties. Think I will pull out Field Notes from Paris. I’ve missed you……

Field Notes!!!! Yes!!!! I have been making decants of that one to give for presents ….. in June I bought some really pretty metal 5ml decant sprays on amazon and I am going to make travel sprays of some of my full bottles to gift for birthdays and Christmas….Field Notes is great because it is unisex!

Wearing Still Life in Rio by Olfactive Studio – usually I find this one a sweet delight, but I am just getting screechy citrus today. I wonder If I sprayed from the wrong sample and put on Still Life ( orig ) which is much more citrus-based on me.

Can’t wait to get home and but on something else.

I haven’t gotten around to showering yet, so I am still in vintage Miss Dior. Stay home vacations can be the best but it’s so easy to lose track of time. So I might continue on with vintage Miss Dior or I might go on with the wearing of Theorema.

I was wondering how on earth the gold flakes got into my decants. Mine are from STC and I wondered if they had figured out a way to open the bottles and use a pipette, but I guess they’re small enough to pass through the atomizer!

Happy Monday, all (if that isn’t an oxymoron)! After a very autumnal-themed weekend that involved spice cake with caramelized apples and maple whipped cream for my husband’s birthday, and an outing yesterday to pick pumpkins at a gorgeous farm in a valley filled with fall color from the maples and vineyards, it’s now grey and blustery in advance of the latest rainstorm. My little cupcake and I went to the park this morning to play in some leaf piles before the fallen leaves all get soggy. Who needs baby toys? He could play with leaves for hours! And to match the weather and in keeping with my recent iris theme, I’m in Iris Silver Mist. Maybe it’s because I love iris so much, but while this perfume tends to be described with words like “alien” and “cold,” to me it’s just beautiful — shimmering, atmospheric, and perfectly named, like a luminous mist across a plush meadow. Makes me happy every time I inhale!

As ever I have packed my batch of 5 samples for the week, chosen by name/ description as they’re all new to me. These are all meant to be sweet treats, but are they? I aim to give them a ‘treat’ mark out of 5 and a ‘sweet’ comment.

SOTD is Linari “Porta del Cielo”.
    Top: bergamot, pineapple, raspberry, freesia and artemisia;
    Mid: orange blossom, violet, lily of the valley, sandalwood and cashmere wood;
Base: white musk, tonka, vanilla, benzoin and labdanum.

Treat factor: 2/5 – for the 10 minutes I can smell anything at all it is merely cheap and disappointing, not actively repulsive.
If this were a sweet it would be: sweet fanny adams.

I had about 10 seconds to choose a perfume this morning, and my gut said
Jicky. Its a good choice since it’s kind of acting like a soothing cough drop to my cold, which has migrated into my chest.
I am wishing I had brough my decant so I can spray more, but it’s probably better that I didn’t – it’s a workday.

Oh I wish I’d known sooner. This is a chronic problem for me. I find the gum/swallowing thing can sometimes backfire on me, leaving my ears plugged for weeks. Recommend a cough syrup with antihistamine & decongestant, plus Earplanz. They are ear plugs with a ceramic filter, so you can hear, but they slow down the air pressure change. Usually available in big box discount store pharmacies, about $7. Good luck.

SOTD = Ex Nihilo Sweet Morphine

6 sprays from my travel spray which was gifted to me by a perfume fairy for almost half Valentine’s Day back in the summer. So gorgeous but really wish it would last longer! The notes according to Fragrantica which I took the liberty of splitting into can vs. cannot smell include: CAN smell lilac, iris, mimosa, boubon vanilla, heliotrope and orris; CANNOT smell bergamot, rose, vetiver and patchouli.

Sweet Morphine is my sweet treat for today.

Very good morning, all of NST. It’s cold and wet but I don’t care: today we leave for two weeks of being together not-at-work. My suitcase is ridiculously heavy: 18 kilos! It bulges, though in fairness to me, most of that is my pillow. But it’s silly– you need as much stuff for two weeks as for six. Sydney first, and it’s 30 degrees there tomorrow. Then Tasmania, and it’s like our winter there: temperatures in the low mid-teens. Then Melbourne, and the weather is much of a muchness with here. So you see (she said in a self-exculpatory tone), I have had to pack for three seasons. Well, that’s my story, and I have the telling of it….I’m travelling in the ever-beguiling Ambre Narguile, which is gorgeous, but politely keeps itself to itself, so shouldn’t be a nuisance to any random stranger I sit beside on the plane, and I’m looking forward to my Chanel fortnight. Oh NST, I’m childishly excited! Two weeks with Richard, just him and me. No staff. No students. No MEETINGS. And Tasmania will be great too.

      Hey ScentSpirit,

To answer your question from yesterday, the new Bois des Iles EDP seemed more aldehylic and overall more intense and it is VERY good. Based on test strip sniffing, it is by far the best “improvement” amongst the ones I smelled – Coromandel, Sycomore and La Pausa. I am still working through half of a 75 mL bottle and I rarely wear it because a family member is extremely sensitive to it.

The swaps continue to trickle in and it’s like Christmas here! I have so many wonderful things to try that I don’t know where to start. Thanks for setting up the swapmeet, and thanks to those who participated. Such a thoughtful and generous group, it’s actually quite humbling.

I think that’s how I feel about Muse. I have Sephora samples and I open it and dab micro doses. It’s much more likeable to me that way.

Tried Oolong tea today. Hmm not sure I smelt much, but I think I may be getting a cold.
