Thursday scent of the day 10/20

Posted by Robin on 20 October 2016 279 Comments

Viggo

Happy Almost-Friday! (And I think we in the US of A can all be happy, in a non-partisan way befitting the comment policy, that the debates are finally over?) (And also, by request, a very happy birthday to Viggo Peter Mortensen Jr!) What fragrance are you wearing?

I am wearing olive leaf extract layered with Traditional Medicinals Echinacea Plus tea. There is illness afoot in my house and I am doing my best not to succumb.

Reminder: 10/21 will be Trick Friday — wear a fragrance that smells entirely different from its name (or feel free to interpret "trick" in some other way). Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

ELdO Rien, a weird medicinal floral thing that turns into leathery incense, and I just don’t know. You’d think it would be right up my alley, but it’s not the good kind of weird. I bet it has some real fans, though.

I had a decant of Rien four years ago and drained it in three days…I do remember liking it and not thinking it was as potent as others had commented it to be…..

I am rejoicing about the debates as well. Speaking of that , I saw Amy Schumer at Madison Square Garden Tuesday evening, my girlfriend got tickets and it was a blast, and very funny. Not to mention a surprise visit from Madonna. I was very fortunate that she had an extra ticket.

Speaking of rejoicing, I am wearing a beautiful sample of L’eau Scandaleuse from a generous NST’er. I really do love this one and I normally don’t like leather fragrances.

    Have a blessed day everyone

    Ombre Leather 16 Tom Ford,
    fantastic!
Waiting for the heater maintenance man for the annual tune-up.
    Watching morning TV, unfortunately.
Is it always this moronic? LOL
    JEEZ…

So you like the Ombre Leather? I’m wondering how close it might be to Tuscan Leather, if you’re familiar. I do really like TL (and just bought a second 5ml decant, as I have drained the first) for its club-chair leather and cozy sweetness. If you could make a comparison for me, I’d be very grateful.

        Sure Mals ! Et al.
Remove the raspberry from Tuscan Leather, and make the leather more intense with bit of petroleum aroma, and there you have Ombre Leather 16.
Occasionally I can discern a subtle Sambac jasmine aroma.
I have a fb of Tuscan, and a decant of 16.
A non-perfumey would probably have one or the other.
        I enjoy wearing both.
        :)

I found Ombré Leather to be rather anemic compared to Tuscan Leather on me. It faded out quite quickly and became a meh skin scent.

I’m sampling 1876 from my Histoires de Parfums discovery set. There is something familiar about it, as if I’ve smelled it before in some other fragrance. On the other hand, whatever it is that I’m smelling I like very much.

I think it reminded me somewhat of Salome, but more masculine to me. It’s that dark powdery rose +cumin or caraway thing that reminds me of it.

Happy birthday, Aragorn! The first Lord of the Rings came out when I was 13, and I was alllll about Legolas, but Viggo looks better and better every time I rewatch.

No SOTD- hoping to make it to Neiman’s to try Byredo Unnamed.

Oh Legolas was sooooooo pretty. So pretty dancing on top of that snow. Yes, I was in love with him, too. I was disappointed to see Orlando Bloom in Pirates of the Caribbean later, where his facial hair and dark hair color went against the purity and innocence with which I had fallen in teenage-love.

Yes. Legolas appeals to younger ladies, but Aragorn’s mighty fine. (My SIL has a crush on Haldir, my daughter likes Eomer, and I have a deep and unholy affection for Faramir. Plenty to go around!)

Faramir was my favorite in the books and I was so disappointed when he became blond in the film, just because it was different from what I had imagined. So Eomer and of course Aragorn it was ????

Mmmmm what a yummy picture. I was 14 when I first saw Aragorn, and immediately fell in love with him. I then started to watch everything with Viggo Mortensen in it and realized he had a really high, pinched, tenor voice. He’s better seen than heard. Nonetheless, every time I rewatch LOTR, I fall for Aragorn again.

No trick today, just some Rose Omeyyade from the ever-generous Pixel. It reminds me of Calligraphy Rose, which is good, I think, because the latter is way cheaper at the discounters. Maybe the trick is on the part of Atelier des Ors and their SAs’ assertions that the gold flakes in their perfumes are good for your health.

What? What did you watch? VM can act fluently in three languages and a multitude of voices, most of them as beautiful as he is. (I think he might be for me what Dylan is for Robin! A no-criticism zone! Ha!) But really, he doesn’t have a high pinched voice. Must have been for a role? He’s squeaky in Carlito’s Way.

      • Koyel says:
        20 October 2016 at 10:28 am

Haha :) Hidalgo first tipped me off to the fact that his voice hurts my ears, and then rewatching all the LOTRs and paying attention to his voice rather than his gorgeous, rugged, kingly looks really pushed the point home to me. Part of the problem is the dissonance between his looks and his voice; I expect his voice to be a manly baritone. Every time I hear his voice (in English) in any movie, I twitch and am instantly less attracted to him.

But good heavens, all these no-criticism zones! I’m in love with many celebrities, but I don’t think criticism of them could ever make me want to disemvowel a comment or argue that feelings are being hurt. Maybe my love doesn’t run deep enough.

Are you the one who requested celebrating his birthday? :)

    Wearing 7% Solution from EnVoyage.
This scent always reminds me of Miller Harris’ L’Air de Rien – both are very biological ( in a good way – skin and breath), but the 7% is a bit more straight-laced – more laudanum than marijuana.

Right. Early on, he’s incognito and wandering the border between The Shire and Old Arnor to the north, as a Ranger, using the name Strider. (This was after his childhood in Rivendell, where he was given the use-name Estel, meaning “hope.”) It was only later that he began using his given name and publicly claiming his birthright as the heir to the throne of Gondor.

First time wearing of Sycomore, thanks to a generous NST-er. How lovely! I now know what all the fuss was about. Woody, yes, but soft and fresh at the same time. A hint of citrus. Office-friendly. We have a winner! Oh, Chanel Les Exclusifs, you have my undying love – and soon my paycheck. Last year I invested in a FB of 31RC – who will be next? Cuir de Russie? Sycomore? Coromandel? If only they weren’t all so spendy. Thank the Gaia for swaps and splits!

    Ahh, Viggo – happy birthday!

SOTD is Cuir Mauresque layered with Rose Anonyme. I’ve been experimenting with proportions on this combination, and the one I like best is a “normal” application of CM and just a whisper of RA. I’ve tried CM alone to compare against the combo, and the tiny amount of RA really does add something, much as vermouth adds just the right “something” to gin in a well-made martini.

This combo sounds interesting. I was debating letting my CM go as it is too much for me, but might be able to redeem it :)

Um. Well, I don’t think the Rose Anonyme tones anything down – if anything it amps the deepness of the CM up a bit. Not that I want to discourage you from trying the combo, because it really is beautiful … but it will still be a dusky, slightly masculine leather with spicy rose. Maybe you could try layering CM with a brighter rose, and adjust the proportions to two thirds rose and one third CM? Actually, I might try that myself!

Sampling some stuff from SIXTEEN92 today, an indie perfumery I came across mention of on perfumesilove, Luca Turin’s blog. These are oils, which I generally don’t love, but some of the scents you can get in parfum instead.

So far it’s a mixed bag. I can see BPAL fans loving some of these, though.

Happy birthday, Viggo, and thanks for looking so good all disheveled and travel-worn!

Also, I am trying to stay cheerful. Bookworm did *not* come home for Fall Break as originally planned. She took a fall in an ultimate frisbee tournament on Sunday and hit her head, and although she does not appear to have a concussion (no loss of consciousness, no vision disturbance, no memory loss), she’s been having headaches off and on since. Just couldn’t face the 10-hour trip – even taking the train was going to be a hardship for her, poor baby. So she’s in CT, and I’m missing her but hoping she can get some rest and feel better soon.
      Sniff.

SotMorning = Eau des Merveilles. I’ve been missing it, plus the weather turned hot again, so EdM is perfect.

And speaking of perfect (putting all politics aside, I vote both ways), I must give a woot-woot! to Mrs. Obama and the Versace gown she wore to the US president’s final state dinner.

So I’ll wear a spritz of Versace Versense later. Going to run down a long list of errands and shopping today, I’m sure I can find a tester. Or maybe Yellow Diamond, that one seems to be everywhere lately.

I do like it and bought a bottle (I did a little review on the blog, if you’re interested). As Elizabeth says, it’s a little sharp in the beginning – I think it’s the pepper and cedar. But I like the lush violet/sharp wood dynamic. It’s not the greatest violet ever, but it’s worth trying. If I owned a bottle of Bois de Violette, I would not have gotten this, but have no regrets.

    SOTD: Galop

This is very much a JCE scent to my nose even though Nagel is it’s creater. It’s lovely, not as much staying power as I tend to like, but in that skin scent, no-brainer category. I love the quince in the opening and definitely good for rose, non-rose scent fans.
The leather is exactly the leather in Cuir d`Ange.

Wearing Chanel 5 L’eau – because it was in my purse (yay, I had something with me, finally).

Didn’t put anything on at home because I had a mammogram this morning. I am celebrating because last year at this time the mammogram started off a whole series of biopsies and worries, and this time, all looked fine. (The radiologist was there and read the films right then for me.) Happy!

ELDO Rossy de Palma is my most worn, Tauer Rose Delight, Une Rose Chypree, Providence Perfume Co Rose Boheme(don’t own), Dita von Teese, and just got a decant of Yves Rocher Rose Oud which I like a lot, Habit Rouge Dress Code, which is growing on me, Perris Rose de Taif, and Armaf Club de Nuit intense woman which is a pretty good dupe of TF Noir de Noir and I actually prefer it to the TF. I’m sure there are others I can’t think of right now.

Van Cleef & Arpels Orchidée Vanillée: There is no reason I should like this; on me it’s fruity and sweet vanilla with a good bit of what might be Iso-E Super – BUT- I love it, it’s fun and girly and young. Reminiscent of strawberry ice cream in a good way.

Best of days to you, NST. It’s Friday here, and why should I celebrate? Let me count the ways: long weekend, last day of the teaching semester, and on Tuesday next week, the dear man and I are going to Australia for two weeks. Sydney, then a week exploring Tasmania, then Melbourne. Lots of rest, lots of walking, a little shopping. I do intend to re-buy my back-up bottles of Vanille Galante and Ambre Narguile, and if I love it, Angel Muse, but other than those plans, I have none. Hurray for an unstructured life!

So. A tricky perfume? Fate has always seemed mis-named to me, or at least mis-packaged. The perfume is too golden and full of light for all that portentous symbolism on the box, though there’s no reason. I suppose, why a fate has to be dark and brooding. I find Safari mis-named too–it’s too green and crisp to match my idea of the heat and heat and very hot heat of a safari–but I don’t want to wear either of these lovelies today. I’Ve decided that my tricksy perfume is going to be Number 22, and that because it goes through so many personalities on my skin. It starts feminine, in an opulent, silk-and-lace cleavage kind of way, gets all demurely floral and virginal (quite a trick, when you think about that) at about the twenty minute mark, then changes again into an equivocal glow of strong-minded, you-want-trouble? sandalwooded personhood, neither feminine nor masculine, just gorgeous. It deserves a name, not a number. It should be called Harriet or Esme or some such slightly old-fashioned name that suggests individuality and character.

All that is just my happy nonsense, of course, but I have to tell you, my fragrant friends, I smell wonderful! Esme and I are going out to conquer the world!

SOTD was Eau d’Italie “Bois d’Ombrie”. I was kind of surprised to see no actual wood listed – I guess it’s the vetiver-and-leather that give a woodsy impression? I liked this, but not as much as I thought I might.

Never heard of Viggo Mortensen. f pushed to answer, I’d have guessed the lead singer from A-ha! – a quick Google reminds me that was Morten Harket. My life feels suitably enriched by all this knowledge today. ;^)

SOTD = Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme

I find this neither noir nor femme so it’s a trick. Fragrantica categorized this as Oriental Floral so while it may technically be one, it smells more like a fruity gourmand in the best possible way. En plus, it is fan me Sexee and yes, I wore it to work for no reason other than I wanted to. Although I realize it is not for everyone, you should at least smell it before dismissing it as just another mainstream Tom Ford. Mainstream has its advantages because the time from launch to appearance at the discounters is usually short which makes buying a large sample very appealing ;-)

An acquaintance wears Noir pour Femme and calls it “delicious cuddles in a bottle” because she gets all the hugs from all the people small to tall when she wears it.

A 30 ml bottle of NpF would indeed be a most excellent large sample.

Viggo!!! You remembered! Thanks Robin! :o)

Greetings from Perth- another city that spring forgot. There’s actually sunshine and no rain today which is a miracle in itself.

PdN Juste un Reve today, Bellodgia tonight (Thurs) as it’s actually now Friday but I couldn’t miss Viggo Day.
