Happy Labor Day and happy International Day of Charity! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Berdoues Assam of India. Tea at the moment is a (matchy-matchy) assam from Upton.
Reminder: 9/9 will be Tea Time Friday: wear a fragrance with a tea note.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the elephant tea pot is $19.95 at Pier One.
I am wearing Kohl Gris from DSH Perfumes. The weather is gray and cool so the spices are a good match
Sounds perfect — cool and gray here too.
I kind of matched my perfume and tea, too: James Heeley Menthe Fraiche and ‘Mojito’ tea. Both have green tea and mint, although unlike my tea Menthe Fraiche also has a strong woody note. Still close enough.
I did not mean to match! But usually am drinking assam in the morning.
Happy Labor Day to those celebrating! I need to get lots done today on my extra day off. I’m procrastinating a bit…and wondering what’s the best scent to get things done? Any ideas? I’ll pick SOMETHING and check back later on a break… 😉 Soonest begun is soonest done, right? Be well.
I’m late to reply, but I think of Eau des Merveilles when I want to get things done. Also Eau des Minimes or an eau de Cologne. I need lots of Eaux. 🙂
Thanks, Tiffanie! That is a great choice, good for pretty much everything. I had a similar thought and went with Orange Sanguine, for its cheerfulness. I think EdM has that with extra sophistication. I’ve been in a perfume slump, and appreciate your advice. Thanks!!
I’m wearing Apres L’Ondee. I have this lace dress that looks a bit like a pastel Monet painting and I wore Apres L’Ondee the first time I put this dress on. I now seem to be unable to match it with any other scent…
In other news (this is mostly for Amy), I finished A Little Life yesterday. Still recovering, but very glad I read it.
I know how you feel, re A Little Life.
Did you like it? Although I guess ‘like’ is not the right word.
Glad it felt worth the investment – in time and emotion!
You smell lovely as always.
No matter how one feels about that book, I think she’s a major talent. I’ve been reading her interviews as well and I’m very impressed. But yeah, it took me over a week to read (very unusual for me), as it was difficult to read more than 100 pages in one go.
The dress and perfume match sounds glorious, I have yet to face reading A Little Life so I admire you.
I like this combination, too. And as Amy says, reading A Little Life was is investment, but worth it for me.
I also hava an elephant tea pot..I love it! It has some damage from my MIL dropping things on it and then saying “the cracks were already there” when I know they are not..but it get a lot of use!
Other news, my husband and I finished stranger things…we binged watched this weekend and I finished the tunnel on PBS. So now we are free to read at night now that these shows are finished.
Your MIL is hilarious! Poor elephant.
We finished Stranger Things last week and have been reading too! Nothing feels that compelling TV-wise at the moment.
I’m wearing Bvlgari Au The Vert. I have a sample of Assam of India, and one of Tea for Two, and I don’t know which to wear on Friday.
I vote for Assam!
I expect I’ll be hunting up my largeish sample of Bvlgari Au The Rouge for Friday.
Spending Labor Day in the pantry, reorganizing (if I didn’t let it get into such a mess, I wouldn’t have to reorganize!), and in Le Temps d’une Fete.
Oh yes, I’ve been thinking I should get that one out of hibernation for Autumn, and Safari too!
Wow! Robin this is the very first time we are twins in both fragrance and tea (also drinking an assam)
I am also testing out my osmanthus e.o. blend with yuzu, immortelle, osmanthus, “apricot” isolate, frankincense, vanilla and labdanum. For an all natural this lasts relatively long (more than an hour 🙂 !!)
Nice avatar, chocolatemarzipan! At first glance, it looks like a 3-eyed owl, but on closer look, I see macarons, thumbprint cookies and mini-muffins (or perhaps something else). Your e.o. blend sounds amazing!
OH! and I saw your avatar at 5am in the morning….I will have to adjust my eyes now because I have gotten used to the one you have been using for years….love the new one, though…too cute!
Yes, brownies, thumbprints. fruit tarts and macaroons..as I said earlier it was a care package for a college family member….and what would you expect from someone whose user name is “chocolatemarzipan” 🙂
It’s a great pic!
Thank you!
I had the same three-eyed-owl reaction, just for a second, and then told myself nobody else would possibly see it that way. Nice to know I’m not alone. 🙂
Frankly I still think it’s a 3-eyed owl and take a dim view of chocolatemarzipan’s obfuscations. Care package indeed! :^D
In all honesty I ate some of the goodies that did not quite fit in before I mailed it off!
LOL. It could be Siamese Twin owls but regardless, I think it is cute.
Hey twin!!
I like that avatar too and also thought it looked like an owl!
that is really funny because for a while I was really into owls…now I am really into elephants!
And if y’all want it to be an edible three eyed owl I am OK with that 🙂
It is truly fun however one looks at it!
Ok Y’all it is official…IT IS AN EDIBLE THREE EYED OWL… happy? 🙂
Or you can go with hajusuuri’s Siamese Twin Edible Owl….
Yay! The world is a better place now the edible 3-eyed owls are here!
I’m wearing Yesterday Haze by Imaginary Authors. I love it, but it has serious longevity issues on my skin. However, yesterday I sprayed on some Eau Premiere while I was at the mall, and it lasted 8 hours (it’s usually disappeared from my skin after 2 hours). Maybe there’s hope for Yesterday Haze!
I only have one fragrance with tea notes in it, which surprises me because I love drinking tea. Maybe this is something I need to explore this winter?
Sounds like it!
Spending Labor Day in Bell Island CT, so beautiful out here and I’m wearing Serge Lutens Religieuse
SOTD = Demeter Baihao Yinzhen Tea
Good by itself but I also decided to just go ahead and layer it with Pure Soap and Beeswax. I have 15 Demeters, mostly 30 mLs, with some travel sprays and a little atomizer of Dirt. Based on the mathematical concept of permutation (which is a combination where order matters), if I layer 3 Demeters per wear without repeating, my 15 scents could generate a staggering 2,730 different layered combinations! In any case, if you are curious as to how the math works (okay, I am a geek), here’s a link to the Math is Fun website:
https://www.mathsisfun.com/combinatorics/combinations-permutations.html
In other news, if you are wondering about my new avatar, I am experimenting. I wanted to use a picture of my niece’s wedding cake (3 white layers with a dragon draped down one side) but it is too fuzzy. If you are seeing a dog’s head, it is of one of my brother’s Cavalier King Charles spaniels. He has three and this one is the biggest (at 12 pounds) and naughtiest. I have a few others ready to use based on pictures from my vacations over the past few years.
Like HemlockSillage, I am procrastinating with doing work I am supposed to do on my day off. I have a tendency to start things only on the hour or the half-hour so I still have 15 minutes or so to “play”.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s Tea scent choices!
You are amazing (in general, but this comment is inspired by your math-geekery in particular).
Thank you, Annikky! Some websites like Math is Fun do a very good job of explaining advanced concepts.
What a sweet little puppy!!!
Thanks, Koyel. This picture was taken a month ago. Would you believe he is 8 years old, no longer a puppy.? Cavalier King Charles spaniels tend to be small.
Oh wow!!! Well then, what a dignified grown-up dog. I just looked them up and they all look adorable but tiny. It’s funny that this one is the biggest of the three 🙂 What are their names?
Love the perfume math! The puppy is so pretty, but I heard somewhere this breed of dog is pretty hard to train. How does your brother find them?
Two went to obedience training and did well. One was a show dog until he was deemed too small for the breed. They tend to be pretty clean and have run of the house, both inside and outside.
My Cavalier King Charles just passed away at 11 years old just a couple of months ago. He was really easy to train, intelligent, quiet and very lovable. The best breed I have ever had. He was almost twice as heavy as your brother’s, at 22 pounds.
So sorry to hear that ScentSpirit. They are good dogs but do tend to have minds of their own, including escaping the property, given the chance.
You always make me laugh…thanks for that! I love this new avatar but I am also not opposed to a cake avatar 🙂
and I am putting aside some of that osmanthus blend for you 🙂
Thank you!
I may have to crop the picture before uploading. I’ll save this task for some other time.
Ha! Math is fun when other people do it for me, so thanks.. And that is one cute doggy!
He is! I also have a picture of all three jockeying for position on one tiny dog bed. They somehow fit but the picture was just a tangle of floppy ears snouts and eyes!
Super cute King Charles spaniel. Impressed by the perfume maths…
Thanks. This one is the most daring of the 3 dogs…he always has this slightly guilty look, the better to make up for his scheming ways before they happen.
Fun new avatar! I know that when I figured out how to change mine, I went through about half a dozen before settling on these olive trees. It’s hard to know how they will look in the little circle until you try it out! (And YAY for math geekery!)
I’ll be switching it out come October for a fittingly spooky one! I agree that you wouldn’t necessarily know how it looks until it appears in the circle.
Hello hajusuuri!
Please indulge me.
What was your previous gravatar ?
I could never figure it out.
Looked like a squid eating a cat. To me. LOL. YMMV
😉
To my eyes it was “modern art”
Ha! I wish I knew to which artist I could attribute but I was looking through some of the other pictures I took at that time and it was most definitely on the modern art category.
It was a picture of a painting of a Sleeping Beauty poster I saw at an art museum in Lisbon. So yes, besides the profile of a beauty, you also see an eye, tongue, leg and paw – bizarre!
Ha! That’s almost exactly what I saw. Definitely a squid and then something catlike too.
What is with the avatar changes?! I was quite content with my splotchy blue design, but now I’m an eye-popping chartreuse in a much less intricate pattern. Most disappointed. I’ve associated people’s colors and patterns to their usernames, and now I’ll actually have to read the usernames. As for myself, I’ll just have to take the plunge and put in a real avatar, I suppose.
SOTM was six generous sprays of Orange Sanguine with two teeny wrist dabs of Chanel Gardenia parfum. By noon, that had all disappeared, so SOTA was Rose Ikebana. By now, that’s disappeared too, of course, so upon being reminded that this is a tea week, I gave myself a couple spritzes of Demeter Earl Grey.
Enjoy your day off, Americans! Wear white!
Hi, Koyel!
Hello again! Your tea sounds like a lovely combination 🙂 Glad you’re back! (And/or I am?)
I can’t do anything about the avatar changes. See the 2nd to last thread here:
https://nstperfume.com/2016/09/02/friday-scent-of-the-day-92/
Ah! Gravatar and identicon–two new terms for me 🙂 Tant pis about the image change.
Love your SOTD…so uplifting….like you I did not care for my new avatar so this weekend I took the plunge and made my own….
Delicious treats! Mmmm. It’s making me want some macarons and cookies.
You’re still splotchy blue to me. Hmm, wonder why I’m not seeing changed avatars? Stuck in a time warp? Oh dear….
Koyel’s avatar is indeed splotchy blue and pixel you are an olive green on my computer…
Weird. Yours has changed on my computer and phone too, pixel! For a brief period, it had changed on my phone but not on my computer, but now it’s changed on both for me.
I suspect that if you clear your computer’s cache the new images will appear.
The avatar I see for you is blue. This happened for someone else who was complaining about her/his new colour – I saw it as a different colour – and I’m not colourblind!
That is caching…old version is stored on your computer for a time. Eventually, they update (see comment just above).
I’m sure I would agree if I had the faintest idea of what that means. 🙂
“a hardware or software component that stores data so future requests for that data can be served faster; the data stored in a cache might be the result of an earlier computation, or the duplicate of data stored elsewhere” — in other words, you visit a web page, your computer stores part of the “background”, which includes some visual images. If the image changes, it might be that you could visit the page again a few times before your cache updates and “gets” the new image.
Tea of the day, Gingerly Jasmine by Tazo.
Scent of the day, Songes to match the jasmine in the tea, since I seem to have no tea scents.
Nice! on both counts!
Wearing Hermes Muguet Porcelaine (finally got the nice double sample pack at one of their boutiques). I don’t know much about lily of the valley, but to me this has a unique character. I am also getting some indoles which I really enjoy.
Happy Labor Day, NST!
Yum!
Still in some lingering Tobacco Rose from yesterday and not sure what I’ll put on for the day. I’ve has a headache all weekend, so nothing or something mellow. Or Fleurs de Sel!
I think I only have two tea scents, so will save those for latter this week.
What do you think of Tobacco Rose?
I love it. I think of it as oily, for some reason, but in a good way, with a tangy Rose and hay. Slightly hippyish, but not too much so. Great for summer when I want something a little heavier and a great more casual perfume for all year round. And it lasts and lasts on me. Possibly my favorite and definitely my most work Papillon.
worn!
I’m in many sprays of Hanbury and loving it more and more (thanks ElisaP!) What a beautiful scent.
Getting ready to head to a Yankees game, hopefully no rain!
And lots of really bad-for-you-food.. hee, hee.
In the meantime, need to get my tea scents in order for this week fun!
It is a beautiful scent…thanks to the generosity of Holly I recently got to try it…you smell good!
Glad you’re liking it! Enjoy the Yankees. I live in a Mets only household.
Milieu Rosa today, which has an oddly addictive quality, I wasn’t sure the first time I tried it but now I regularly crave it. Meanwhile I am pondering which, if any, of the Labo city exclusives to consider – Vanille 44 and Gaiac are currently v interesting but really the bottles are ot small and they are not cheap etc…
that should be not small (in case anyone thought I meant too small)!
Splitmeet coming soon!
About to go for a haircut. My stylist moved, and she is now in the back of a mechanic shop. Should I be worried? Then again, this *is* Brooklyn (insery eye-roll here).
I’m in MDCI Peche Cardinale courtesy if the lovely Petunia ????
I used to work up at Mt. Rainier National Park, where the nearest barber shops were in the teensy town of Morton, WA. I had two choices, the knife, cutlery and barber shop or the live bait, tackle, and barber shop. Naturally, I went to the cutlery place first, but as he “don’t cut the hair of girls,” I had to go around the corner to Stan’s Live Bait and Tackle, instead. Stan gave me a lovely haircut and I was sure to tip him extravagantly for his openmindedness. 🙂
That’s great! Haircut and worms???? Turns out it was in a room at the back of the shop. Really nice space, actually. And I’m always happy with her work, so I was happy to follow her there.
I just got my haircut this past Friday…at the mall 🙂
There was definitely an aquarium in view at Stan’s!
Glad to hear your haircut location was comfortable and you can stick with your stylist. So important to stick with a good hair person when you find one!
I have worn Mitsouko for the past three days, learning to like it. Yesterday, I got no peach at all but instead a head full of cinnamon (which I liked). I’m still working on my coffee, so unprepared to make difficult decisions about fragrance just yet. But I certainly have a week’s worth of tea scents, if I wanted to join the game. Maybe Jacomo No. 8 later . . .
Mitsouko is difficult for me, but now I want to wear it…
It has been a surprise to me how wearable it seems to me these days! When I first tried it years ago, it was an “egad” on my sniff-list ratings scale! Now, it just seems like a pleasant gourmand chypre . . .
BTW, today, I opted for Bulgari Black for my tea contribution.
So, here we are in Tea Week. Or here I am in Tea Weak anyway; don’t know who else is playing. SOTD is Pierre Guillaume “Foudre” from his Collection Croisière series. Notes of champaca, vetiver, black tea, cashmeran, pepper and musk (or so says Fragrantica). I have to really concentrate to get the tea. It’s a nice fragrance, sort of sweet/ sharp/ earthy, and meant to evoke the smell of champaca flowers just before a thunderstorm. It lasted half a day which is just about okay for a light scent. Grey and drizzly in Paris today. :^)
Ha, any other time ‘Tea Weak’ would be me slagging off another drippy Pierre Guillaume perfume but this one is okay and that is a genuine typo. ;^)
LOL!
I like your new avatar too!!!
Cool and grey here as well, and leaves are starting to come off my trees. I’m wearing Bohemian Black today, I wanted some amber warmth as I go outside and start the fall yard clean up. As far as tea scents go, I think I only have Osmanthe Yunnan. I’ll be interested to see what other people choose this week.
I’ve been wearing different masculines this weekend because I’m trying to decide on a few to loan a male friend to try. His style is casual but excellent taste is important to him; he wouldn’t want to wear anything that anyone might find feminine. It’s a challenging scent-thought exercise for me to stay within these bounds. 🙂
He wore 4711 when he was young, so I think he would appreciate some of the classics.
Yesterday I wore vintage Guerlain Vetiver and Knize Ten. Saturday I broke out the vintage Yohji Homme. Today I’m wearing vintage Caron 3me Homme on one wrist and Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur on the other.
Other possibilities: SMN Melograno, Bulgari Black, the CdG incense series, BK A Taste of Heaven (the lavender-absinthe one), vintage Hermes Bel Ami, L’AP Dzing! and maybe even Guerlain Habit Rouge.
Whew! I’ll most likely start him out with Guerlain Vetiver and Knize Ten.
What am I overlooking?
I happily wear a bunch of ‘masculines’ but here’s a few that I found too masculine for me: Bel Ami Vetiver… Terre d’Hermes… HdP 1828 Jules Verne… Tom Ford Italian Cypress… Bogue Cologne Reloaded… Dior Homme…
Good ideas – need to sniff TF Italian Cypress, and Grey Vetiver, too, while I’m at it.
How about some of the Dame Perfumery offerings for men? If you don’t have any your friend could always purchase the 8ml decants for eight dollars and fifty cents…I like them all…Herb Man, Cirtrus Man, Musk Man, Leather Man…
Good idea – I love his Gardenia!
I’m now thinking how many wonderful masculine’s you’ve drawn to my attention that I still need to try/get for either myself or my husband! I got him the Caron third man for his birthday in May, which he loves, his other favourites are Encre Noir, Miller Harris La Fumee and SL Chergui.
Thanks, mayfly! I actually have La Fumee (an impulse purchase after I loved La Pluie so much). It seems to disappear quickly on me, but I wonder if I’m somewhat anosmic to it. How do you find its longevity?
Hmm, things I have that I consider skew more masculine than unisex (although women wear most of them), and that you haven’t already mentioned:
BeauFort Coeur de Noir
Caron Yatagan, Pour Un Homme and L’Anarchiste
Chanel Egoïste and Pour Monsieur
Czech & Speake Cuba and No. 88
Salvatore Ferragamo Vendemmia
Galimard Offrez-lui
Miller Harris Feuilles de Tabac
Parfums de Marly Hamdani (that one is a leather thug and probably few women would care for it on themselves)
Thanks, Koenigsberg! I like the Miller Harris line but have never tried Feuilles de Tabac – I must remedy that! I’ve been meaning to search out Salvatore Ferragamo samples, too. IIRC, Kevin liked Vendemmia.
Yes, it was his review caused me to try it out, in SAC Parfums in Málaga. I remember because it was the first niche perfume shop I ever entered. :^)
Chanel Sycomore.
Agreed, I wore it at the weekend and wondered how anyone would bracket it as a “women’s perfume”. :^)
Thanks, Annicky! Sycamore would definitely reflect impeccable taste.
Puredistance M if you have it. Otherwise, I would vote for Guerlain Habit Rouge and Hermes Bel Ami.
Good idea! I have a sample of M somewhere…
AG Sables now that we’re headed for cooler weather. And Dior Eau Sauvage.
Agreed, Sables is unisex but not remotely feminine (to my nose anyway)
Great possibilities, thanks!
Oh yes to Sables …just got to try it recently and I must say that would smell glorious on a man!
Vetiver Extraordinaire?
Yes, a great vetiver!
No scent yet, I’m still working on Lazy Weekend and just got up. Three day weekends are great; four would be better; seven would be best of all, I’m thinking.
Might do a tea scent later, but since I already did a Tea Week earlier this summer, might just sample. Need to go do yard work, but so lazy……
Hey, is anyone else having difficulty reaching luckyscent’s website? For several weeks now I get a ‘timed out’ message whenever I try to access it. Tried different browsers, tried flushing my browser cache, no luck. Perhaps the perfume gods are trying to save me some $. If so, they should’ve blocked First in Fragrance too.
Listen to the gods 🙂
😀
I haven’t had a problem (though have not ordered). I would call them and get the violin out while you’re at it — maybe they’ll give you a discount on the spot!
Liz Earles No. 14 this morning, and now it’s worn off a liberal spray of Miller Harris La Pluie, perfect in muggy, overcast weather.
La Pluie is perfect on certain days!
Overcast, cool, and windy; hence Badgley Mischka for me.
A longtime and most generous friend whose New Age bookstore closed a few years ago ???? shares her leftover stock of Shoyeido incense with me. I’m currently “listening” to Morning Zen. Sandalwood, cinnamon, benzoin, and patchouli. Very tranquil.
Testing Hegoa today. But it was gone in a hot minute either that or there’s something I’m not smelling. I only have two tea scents but maybe this is an excuse to visit Jo Malone or Hermes this week ????
I really liked Hegoa and also found it short-lived. But 3-4 hours rather than evaporating on contact (and believe me I’ve had more than my fir share of those!).
SOTD = the last bit of Studio Red Rose parfum oil from Soivohle. Not sure this still comes in the oil, but I do see it listed in the “Street Collection”.
Tea of the day is a marzipan rose black tea from Tea & Absinthe. Matching it with the SOTD was not at all planned!
Oh, your tea sounds fun!
It is! I am always a little bummed when I use it all up.
SotD = Terracotta, perhaps the last sniff of summer, or not. There’s always a warm day on the horizon.
That elephant tea pot is beyond adorable. I collected tea pots for years then gave all but two away before moving across the country. I hope tea week here at NST won’t create a new tea pot mania. (Taking deep breaths, taking deep breaths.)
Happy Labor Day, USA.
SOTD is Mitsouko. It just felt like a Mitsouko Monday. I’m not sure it really ‘goes with’ my planned day of watching tennis and baseball and eating burgers, but I don’t care!
Have a great day, everyone.
I’ve been thinking a out wearing Mitzy lately too. Today was almost cold enough. You smell great.
It’s finally cool enough today to wear Cuir d’Ange. Many many spritzes.
You smell so marvellous!
Quel Amour! It is one of these scents that I keep smelling even though they are not longer present close to or on the skin. It leaves a sort of strong scent memory I think. It can get a little bit on my nerves sometimes, even though I love Quel Amour!.
It is so chilly today, went all Tauer rose with Rose Delight oil followed up with Une Rose de Kandahar. What a nice consolation perfume provides for a change in the seasons…at least you get to wear those rich heady scents that have been tucked away all summer.
You smell gorgeous!
Happy Labor Day to all of those in the U.S. that celebrate it!
Today, I combined Sakura Cherry Blossom and Nutmeg & Ginger buy Jo Malone. These are two scents that I typically always layer with something else. Since I was off today, and just wanted to wear something, I just grabbed these two and sprayed away. It’s not bad, but also something that I would wear outside of the house.
I talked to my favorite Neiman’s SA on the phone this past Saturday
(PSA: Neiman’s is having their beauty event going on right now; get some free beauty samples and a tote when you make a $125 cosmetics or fragrance purchase). I asked her to send me some samples of the tea fragrances from JM. I have no idea what they smell like , but the price tag for a bottle is too rich for my blood. I will wear one on Friday if it comes in on time. I am hoping that I don’t like them, because I definitely cant afford it right now. We shall see. Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday!
Oh that combo sounds interesting! I try to layer my Jo Malone’s too!
I started the day in De Profundis but ended it in a melange of scents that clung to me as I reorganized my perfume collection and samples. It’s one chore that I never mind doing. ???? Happy Labor Day to the folks in the US!
Has anyone tried Le Labo Vanille 44 in oil format? If so, do you have an opinion on how it compares to the EDP? Just curious.
