Thursday scent of the day 8/4

Posted by Robin on 4 August 2016 256 Comments

Palm Beach vintage postcard

It's Almost-Friday, and I'm leaving on the second of my summer vacations. We are heading north, and will be on the road most of today. Posting may be a little lighter than usual until I return at the end of next week, but starting Monday, Angie will have a series of posts from her vacation, in Paris. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in a tiny, car-trip-friendly dab of Carven Le Parfum, developed by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian. Tea today will be iced coffee, from the first Starbucks on the New Jersey Turnpike.

Reminder: on 8/5, wear a fragrance by Francis Kurkdjian, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    White Aoud Montale.
Pretending I’m a rock star by singing Synchronicity II at the top of my lungs while working out this morning.
    Triple strength coffee! Yeah! 😀

Today is my turn to wear Iris Nobile. I have no idea whether my sample is EDT or EDP, but I although I agree that this is a rather delicate floral scent, I would not call it ‘powdery’ as many reviewers do. It smells like iris + green citrus to me. Nice.

Twins, I’m in Iris Nobile EdP, love it. On my other arm I’m again in APOM which reminded me yesterday of Iris Nobile. There are similarities in feel and texture, but APOM is fresher and softer spoken and also very very nice.

Does APOM stand for something? I’ve been wondering this forever but haven’t been able to find the answer. I need to get some MFK scents so I can participate in the next FK week.

That’s it, apparently orangeblossom is FK’s signature note (whatever that is) so this perfume is part of him (or something 😉 ). But it is very nice!

I came home late last night after a lovely evening of drinks and cheese plates with an overwhelming craving for Alahiiiiine, but I have no idea where my sample got to, so this morning I went for something with similar level of warmth – Amouage Fate. I’d love to do a major reorganization of my samples, but I’m continuing to spend as much time out of the house as possible as my roommate continues his search for a new place to live (he and his mother made a bid on a place, but it was declined). He’s behaving well enough lately, but I’m just so over it and want my space that I’m trying to decide if I should ask him to find a place to sublet in the meantime while he searches, but that feels almost….mean? God, I’m a softie.

In any case, the summer has become much more manageable in New York this week, so I’m enjoying my time spent out of the house.

Hope everyone is well and nicely scented 🙂

My son has sublet his room and sublet apartments himself for various reasons and on short notice. I think he also did an airbnb. People do it all the time
through work, school, sport, etc. FB groups and other social media. He really has many options. Perhaps the NYC perfumistas should all come over wearing lots of Diva and strongly encourage him to pursue these options!

Brilliant. And I have a big bottle – I could make the apartment itself reek!!

Update that is also below – I’ve sent him an email saying it’s important to me that he move out as soon as possible. PROGRESS!

Haju, just so you know, you’ve inspired me to write an email saying that it’s important to me that he move out as close to his original deadline (end of summer) as possible.

I think the email makes sense. Quite frankly, it has been long enough. You first mentioned this months ago, so you’ve been very generous. He is an adult man. Keep reminding yourself of that. Beyond that, he needs this for himself and will be better off.

I know from experience that, although it is hard, sometimes forcing someone to move forward does have very positive results. Such that he’ll likely look back and wonder why he didn’t move quicker.

I am loving this suggestions as I have had my 40ish youngest son living with me now for over 13 months. I recently suggested that on August 1st he start paying me a very minimum amount ($60) per week. He said he would if I got rid of everything in that room (including the clothes in the closet) so he could move his own bed in there and all his stuff. When he originally came to stay with me, he had just sold his house (had to because of his divorce) and was supposed to stay a couple of weeks until he found a place. However, he stopped looking a year ago. I do not want to get rid of my stuff–I live in a small condo and that room was my junk room as I have no other place to store certain things (like luggage, etc.). In the meantime I am paying all bills (mortgage, condo fee) while he enjoys the use of my Wi-Fi, Cable, Electricity, etc. Actually, I want him to move out so I can have my privacy once again.

You know what’s funny? How much more protective and fierce I get when other people are being taken advantage of as opposed to myself. Sweet Filomena, I read your story above and thought “Oh h*** no!”

I have cousins I love dearly who are similarly exploiting their generous parents, and it is so aggravating to see. I have no idea what it must be like to be a mother and find yourself in these circumstances, with a child you love imposing on you like that. I wonder if there is a way to say “I love you, but I need my privacy again, and I will need you to be out by a certain date”? That’s kind of what I just did, inspired by encouragement from the good NSTers and personal friends, and I have to say I feel much better for it.

This is actually a reply to Filomena below (we ran out of reply links).
If your son doesn’t consider the room suitable to pay rent for, perhaps you could ask for a contribution to WiFi, cable, electricity, etc. as he doesn’t seem to have a problem using those.

          • ihadanidea says:
            4 August 2016 at 2:12 pm

Well, he finds it suitable enough to stay there, so to me, that counts!

At least you have a deadline. My husband’s very good friend had to go to court to get his roommate to leave, a roommate, mind you, that did not pay rent. She was a total freeloader. It was supposed to be a very short amount of time but turned into 2+ years.
I had to stop hearing about it because it infuriated me so much.

From memory: the TF is sheerer and sweeter with more coconut and didn’t last very long on me. Santal is drier, and it smells less like sandalwood and more like cedar to me. Some people notice a dill note, which I can see, but blends into the whole. It also seems to last forver and projects across the room from my experience.

I’m sampling SMN’s Fieno (Hay) today – thus far it’s pretty powdery on me, similar to Teint de Neige. I’m looking forward to how it progresses! I’ve gotta get myself to the local SMN store some day – any fans of the line?
The weather here in the DC area has been mild for the last couple of days, and the a/c is off and the windows are open yay! I know that it’ll heat up again very soon, but I’ve noticed that the local critters are changing their tune and that always creates a feeling of melancholy in me. When the birdsongs of summer and the crickets’ and cicadas’ chirping shift to different tunes and intervals, I begin to miss looking forward to a long summer and mentally start preparing myself for fall.

My brother was in the Florence store a couple of years ago and was completely overwhelmed, being a minimal Italian-speaking non-perfumista. I feel the need to rectify this one day.

Holly, come August I immediately notice the appearance of cloud cover (NM and NC), but never critter sounds. I’m jealous and will have to pay more attention.

I associate the shift to autumn with starlings. They become restless and their call dominates the garden. Spring is blackbirds and grey warblers. I heard the first long trill of a grey warbler this week and instantly thought ‘spring’. They have to mate and lay their first eggs early in spring so they can raise one young before the shining cuckoos fly back from the Solomon Islands….in late October . The shining cuckoos lay their eggs in the grey warbler nest, and the young cuckoo boots the young warbler out…in typical cuckoo fashion. Sorry, bit of a bird rant!

I just tested that one on paper. Pretty, but a bit too soapy for my liking. I’m very picky about orange blossom. Congrats on your Shangri-la score! That’s also my fave of the line.

Orange blossom is my favorite note, and I knew for sure I would love Dilettante – I almost did a blind buy. I wasn’t thrilled, though. I like it a lot, but it’s not fbw for me, and it does fade quite quickly on my skin. Maybe I’ll get a 5ml if that size becomes available.

It’s been a long while since I’ve posted here. Scent of the day is Hermès Brin de Reglisse. It’s one of my favourites for summer. Does anyone have an opinion on Etro Sandalo? Etiket has a bunch of Etro perfumes at half price in the 50 ml size and I am severely tempted by this one.

I finally organized my tiny samples and realized I had some I had never tried, including one by Frances Kurkdjian! SOTD is Indult Isvaraya. The notes are plum, patchouli and jasmine. Not my usual thing, but very pretty. Jasmine has this creamy thing that sometimes doesn’t work for me but I am finding that I am liking it more.

I find them similar as well, and prefer Borneo (I agree on the cost thus only have a decant) because it lasts forever, unlike the Chanel which disappears on me in no time.

Beauty Bag Event Feb/Mar and Sept/Oct – if you’re spending anyway, consolidate them to meet the minimum ($200 I think or thereabouts) and you get a decent bag with a lot of samples. I usually pre-order, including requesting the SA to get me specific samples. I used to work with Le Labo SAs but they ticked me off so now I work with a wonderful La Mer SA.

I’m wearing the next-to-the-last (I hope) application of Diptyque’s Satin Oil from one of those huge samples in that I didn’t know I had. I see they’ve stopped including these in the little travel collection and wonder if it’s because the coated paper packets drip and leak like crazy once opened and have a week’s worth of product in them, or if they were just loosing money. I do smell nice, but the fragrance is surprisingly strong and long lasting and I haven’t figured out what to layer with it.

It’s similar to the Nuxe in texture and scent, but is less creamy-floral and more saffron spicy. It also might be a tad heavier. If you have vats of Nuxe you probably don’t need both, but I think the LE small bottle is very tempting and a reasonable price.

SotD = Promesse de d’Aube. Sniffing the sample vial, great. Sniffing on paper, nice. Sniffing on wrist, not sure yet. I don’t quite know where this one is going, but I am intrigued.

Chain saws and backhoes, ahoy! Tree trimming continues in our neighborhood, so we’re battening down the hatches against the noise, dust, and pollen clouds. Thankful for the hard work going on to keep the trees healthy.

And thank you, nozknoz, for sharing the corpse flower livecam link at the US Botanical Garden. It is charming to watch people take selfies with the big flower. Yesterday a woman in a tiara showed up. And last night after the garden had closed, staff members took candid photos. One of them wore a titan arum costume with a big yellow pointed hat and a reddish robe. Hilarious!

Pdl’A is completely backwards on me. Strong sandalwood and tonka to start, then it settles down and flowers begin to appear, without a bit of citrus so far. No vanilla either. Fascinating stuff.

SOTD is Olympic Orchids “Dev #2”, which on me is resinous smokey boozy spice, but *not* Clove Central as many reviewers find. This was great for an early start in cloudy London, and on the plane (where it behaved itself with low sillage). It’s less well suited to 35C Malaga sunshine, but I love it anyway.

On the Auphorie thread, Nozknoz mentioned the problem of already having 2 perfumes closely enough related that it’s impossible to justify a 3rd from the same scent family. She was talking Osmanthus/ Leather; I think Dev#2 falls into that position for me in the incense/ resins family. I’ll add it to the longlist, but I have a bunch of other similar FBs (Rudis, Rundholz, Nanban and more; they are not the same as this or as each other but have the territory covered between them). I may never get around to getting this one.

Trying the Rose Delight body oil this morning. Love the texture, love the scent. It is quite strong even on its own for me. So much so that I’d even hesitate to wear it to work.
*I am a big chicken on that front since there is a person at my work that makes quite a fuss if she smells any perfume at all. I had to take Bottega Veneta off of my wear to work list because of a “situation” and I find that very low key myself.

Lush Orange Blossom for me today. I needed something cheerful and energetic that does well on a warm, sunny day. This may be the closest dupe I know to the Florida Water souvenir perfume that my mom brought back home from our Disney trip when I was a kid. It’s sharp and sweet and simultaneously indolic and a bit soapy. Ahh…

Asking you to move your things out to better accommodate him in your apartment is definitely a step in the wrong direction for a 40-year old.

Bees love herb flowers too – thyme, chives, sage, oregano, hyssop, lavender – so you can have a double purpose bed.

SOTD was Tam Dao EDP this morning followed by Vetiver Tonka in the afternoon. I don’t have anything to qualify for the theme, sadly. But I love those two.

I have flower beds, vegetable beds, an herb bed and lavender. I’m seeing mostly bumble bees and hornets but not as many I used to. I don’t think I’ve seen a honey bee this summer. Between the unusually cool spring and gypsy moths, this wasn’t a stellar growing season in New England. Thank you for the suggestions. ????

SOTD Dame Gardenia soliflore – rather liberally applied (by accident!! I turned my head for just a minute and, you know, it’s a sample so . . .). It’s lovely – waxy and heady. Mmmm.

I’m a little stressed about money at the moment, but this is helping me think about other things.

I’m wearing Shalimar in honor of my Mother who passed away on Wednesday morning. At least I was with her,and she was safe, warm with little suffering.I don’t think I will ever stop crying though.Perfume keeps me sane.I decided to write here today, because my Mom knew how much I loved perfumes. And she was very interested in my collection too.Never forget to tell your loved ones “I Love You” at least once a day.xo.Johanob

I’m very sorry for your loss.

Please don’t let anyone tell you when grieving should end. In my experience grief is a rollercoaster. There will be days, even months or years, when you think things have settled, then all of a sudden the feeling can come crashing in again.
Good memories always help. I don’t feel someone is ever completely gone. My parents died 30 tears ago and I still find myself thinking “this is something Mom/Dad would have liked.”

Your wise advice about saying “I love you” is so true. My sister and I don’t talk daily, but in the last couple of years, each time we do the conversation ends with us saying “I love you.”

Happy Friday, everyone, when it arrives for you up there or as it begins down here. NST, thank you all so much for the kind words of sympathy and support yesterday–I wanted to reply at the time, but my vision went wonky (technically correct term!) and I quite soon spiralled down into utter migraine misery again. In fact, my dear papa would have told me that I went all “little, weak and helpless”–not an expression of approval, I can tell you–and I did nothing all day but lie very, very still, and worry about stuff! Anyway, please forgive my ragged manners.

Today I’m feeling a bit better,,but curiously fragile, and I want to smell of something cheerful, but you know what? I don’t own a single scent I would describe that way. I have interesting perfumes, elegant perfumes, refreshing, encouraging, warming, happy (which seems different from cheerful, somehow), even sexy perfumes, but there’s an odd absence of “cheerful” on my shelves. I’m going to wear Ambre Narguile, because it’s the closest thing I can think of to what I want, but it’s not quite right. Humph. Do I never set out to be cheerful, I wonder?

Hope you’re fully better very soon. Cheerful in perfume is an interesting idea, I’m not sure if any of mine are so. I have some friendly and bracing vetivers though.

Friendly and bracing is a close substitute for cheerful. I’ll think on vetiver and also rose and ylang. I wonder why I’m not reading citrus as cheerful? Perhaps I should get a sample of Sunshine and Pancakes and challenge my perceptions. Jessica’s review of S&P was certainly intriguing.

Glad you’re feeling better today! I missed commenting yesterday, so I wanted to say I know what it feels like to have a ‘public’ experience like that. But we can’t choose when and where physical misery strikes, and other people understand that.

You should definitely get yourself a cheerful perfume! Citrus–especially lemon and grapefruit–induce cheerfulness. Rose and ylang ylang are good, too.

I’m sorry that you had such an awful experience yesterday, and hope that you are on road to feeling much better. I know exactly what you mean by your vision getting wonky – I was once watching the news when I had a migraine coming on (although I didn’t quite realize it yet) and Al Roker (a famous weatherman in the USA) looked like a demon because half of his head was distorted. I was very happy to find out that it was just my weird vision and that the poor man’s head hadn’t been twisted in a vise!

Cheerful perfume? My cheerful perfume is L’Ambre des Merveilles.

Ambre Narguile is a comforting scent for me. I hope it is working well for you today.

Cheerful fragrances that I love have citrus or floral notes with hints of green, yellow, and orange, such as

      Parfums DelRae Wit and Debut,
Jour d’Hermes, Le Jardin de Monsieur Li, and Muguet Porcelaine,
Atelier Colognes Cedrat Enivrant, Trefle Pur, and Grand Neroli.

“Cheerful” is one of those descriptors for perfume that I think are very personal. I had to think a bit to come up with even one. My suggestions would be Calyx or AC Orange Sanguine. YMMV.

Hmm, “cheerful perfume”. Sounds like a worthy Friday project, wear a cheerful perfume and share why it makes you feel that way. Offhand I’d pick Rose Ikébana or Urura’s Tokyo Café and I agree that cheerful is distinct from happy.

Read about your ordeal the other day, and so glad you’re on the mend. Migraines sound dreadful and like such a helpless situation. I can barely deal with a bad headache…
I think I can really only think of 2 things I wear that I’d consider cheerful, or giddily optmistic and playful. Loulou (which could be migraine inducing in the first 1/2 hour) and Tauer’s Gardenia, neither of which I wear often enough.

You’re making me feel a yearning for Winter snow here in hot Summer. The truth is, I love the bit where the snow is falling and the sky glows and all sound is hushed. It’s when it all turns to compacted ice on the pavement and dirty slush on the roads that I lose sympathy with Winter weather. And the killer is the months of grey dreariness that surround the fleeting moment of snow.

Late to the party today, but at least I arrived ????

SOTD is the gorgeous Zelda from En Voyage Perfumes. Every time I wear this, I’m astounded by its longevity and complexity. It’s a very intense perfume which requires the right mood, and today was the day.

Wonderful day off filled with baking and cooking for a work function this weekend. My part of the menu consisted of chocolate/vanilla marble cheesecake with chocolate crust and a spicy Southwestern Chicken pasta salad. I will also take a fresh mixed fruit salad for the health-o-phobes. I am occasionally a health-o-phobe myself, but when cheesecake is involved, all bets are off. Cheers!

I had the most unproductive morning – I was in some kind of weird funk and could not do anything except drink coffee and stare out the window at some magpies. Finally kicked myself in the butt, went for a run and am now trying my mother’s Blackberry and Bay. On my mom, it smells fruity and happy. On me, it smells exactly like tomato leaves. Which I love, but was not expecting.
