Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Lush Kerbside Violet.
Reminder: 7/22 will be Flashback Friday — wear a fragrance you wore "back in the day". I think this was suggested by Bee and MikasMinion?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Helen Merrill, who turns 86 today, singing Cole Porter's You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To, at the Festival de Jazz d'Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, France, July 1960.
Note: image shows Lush Blackberry Bath Bomb.
In preparation for tomorrow I’m wearing another old favourite of mine, Nina by Nina Ricci. Not the red apple one, I haste to add. I slightly oversprayed so I feel very fragrant and composed.
Perfect! I do not yet feel composed, so maybe I need to apply more.
It’s a Byzance kinda day: bright and sunny and not too hot, perfect for that insane jolt of aldehydes and carnation over a not-too-heavy oriental background.
Ahh, memories. I wore that for a couple of years back in the day, and would wear it for tomorrow’s theme but I don’t have any. Le sigh.
Anybody who was heavily into scents at that time has got at least one regret. Mine is that I didn’t get and hang onto a bottle of Giorgio Red, which was perfectly astonishing stuff, almost the apex of the “throw EVERYTHING into the bottle and someone will wear it” aesthetic so prevalent in the late eighties. Thank god I at least have a few vintage bottles, of which Byzance is one.
Yay for Giorgio Red! I wore it when it first came out and loved it. I even had the body scrub, which was one of the best I ever tried. Unfortunately I didn’t hang on to any.
Double yay for Giorgio Red. I didn’t wear it back in the day, but I came across some in a thrift store. I find it beautiful and warm so it had a lot of wear in the fall and winter.
Attention all leather lovers. Parfumerie Moderne “Cuir X”.
Rich floral / leather / herbal opening, leather leather leather middle, smooth dry down.
I’m not a great leather fan usually, but this stuff is very good.
That is all.
I agree, that’s a nice one, very smooth.
Ooooh – you both have caught my attention. Added to the to-try list.
I should try that one. I’m also a little iffy when it comes to leather (though I started my day out in one).
Yes, I also think it’s good. I’m going to revisit it this autumn.
I was thinking about fragrances I used to wear. Most of them were by Dana or Coty and now make me think they were “kids” fragrances: Navy, Incognito, Exclamation. Those three were on my dresser as a kid. Then I had Anais Anais in high school and Spellbound, but only in body lotion. There may have been a few others, but I can’t remember. I never really wore much fragrance when I was younger and didn’t get into it seriously until about 5 years ago, so I can honestly say there’s not really a fragrance I wore “back in the day”. I’m not going to go buy a bottle of Navy or Exclamation just for the project either, so I’l be bowing out of the challenge tomorrow. Besides, it’s supposed to be hot as hell, so I’ll most likely be showered in a citrus cologne.
I’m in Aedes de Venustas (signature) today. I thought this would be rather good for a hot day, but the savory smell of tomato leaf is kinda making me feel nauseous.
I remember the Exclamation and Navy commercials and ads – they seemed so glamorous when I was little, and I’m not even sure I knew what they smelled like – I just wanted to be as fabulous as the girls in those ads, or the girls who had those on their dresser.
Navy definitely seemed very glamorous, but I thought Exclamation was meant for younger people (teens to early 20s) with it’s black and pink style.
I never really thought they were fabulous. To me, that was my mom’s bottle of Beautiful on her mirrored tray.
I should mention that I was also under ten at the time, so my perspective on what was fabulous was perhaps a bit skewed 🙂
I was in junior high when Exclamation was really popular. I wore it and thought it was the bomb. (I also thought my mom’s No. 5 smelled fussy and gross, and deliberately sprayed my bangs to look like a frozen tsunami so my taste from those days should not be trusted.).
Wow is that a good description of those early 90s bangs. You were at the height of style at the time! We may all be currently committing some kind of similar sartorial/grooming mistake that we’ll be amazed by in the future, but in the meantime, props for the tsunami bangs.
My tastes have changed as to what i like, but I do not think we commited any mistakes when young or children just because our tastes were different 🙂 they had as much right to exist as today’s 🙂 The only thing, we might not in fact have accomplished the looks we were going for, and our image in our heads was different than in reality…but that is always a danger
Exclamation was created by Sophia Grojsman, so however inexpensive it was, it wasn’t cheap, at least not in the sense of shoddy and thrown-together. In 1988, even drugstore scents were good.
That’s true, although that one was my least favorite of the ones I had. Navy was ok, but Incognito was my favorite – although I hardly wore it.
Reading the notes, Incognito sounds really good. Hope I can find it somewhere to smell it.
Exclamation was really good.
An ebay seller threw in an Incognito sample with an order a while back. It was by Covergirl. It wasn’t bad, actually.
Your first paragraph is an almost-echo of what’s been going through my head this week (substitute Vanilla Fields for Incognito)! I wore Miracle a lot in the mid-90’s, but I’m not sure if that counts as “back in the day”, and again, I don’t have any anyway. . . .
Yes! That could have been my dresser, too: Navy, Incognito, and Exclamation. Plus Liz Claiborne Realities and a few others at various points… I wish I’d kept the bottles; except for Exclamation, they were all minis.
I like Aedes signature, but I think it’s better for cooler days, not when it’s truly warm.
Wearing No5 Chanel EDP circa 1992. This is hugely aldehydes smelling of AquaNet / hair shellac. Nice, but I prefer No 22.
In anticipation of a possible record setting heatwave, got a hipster/1950s haircut.
Quarter inch sides and back, 3 inches on top. Head air-conditioning.! Reminds me of childhood barber, my Uncle Sam! RIP, good memories.
Carpe Diem. 😀
What – no DA? There must at least be a layer of Brylcream? 😉
HAHA!
Found Pureology AntiFade in my bathroom to tame it.
In true perfume-ist fashion I purchased not because I color my hair, but because it smells great.
Rose, sandalwood, geranium, and basil. Don’t know if it is still produced.
I’ve got a picture somewhere of my dad sporting a DA… this was, obviously, before he went to Virginia Tech and had all his hair buzzed off (back in the day, all students had to be ROTC cadets)!
SOTD: Amber Musk from Aerin
Still haunted by the flu… (it’s been almost 14 days. How is that even possible!?)
Its raining out and the temperature dropped to Fall level and I am shivering like a wet puppy.
Comfort scent is the way to go.
Btw, has anyone tried the new Tangier Vanilla yet?
Oh boy, that’s quite an extended flu! I hope you’ve been recovering significantly and have seen your doctor just to make sure that’s what you have. Feel better soon!
Thank you! I was back at the doctors yesterday and she said what I started off as viral had gone bacterial so now I am on a course of antibiotics. Stay healthy everybody!
You poor thing – are you sure it’s just the flu? Sounds so much worse! Take care of yourself.
Thank you! 🙂
Feel better soon. Perhaps something going around? A friend has had a lingering bug also. Luckily all tests are normal.
Hope you feel better soon, a few people round here seem to be ailing as well. Not fun for you. Hope the comfort scent is doing it’s job – this is one I would like to sniff soon.
Hope the antibiotics speeds up your recovery!
Get well soon!
Get well soon! A year before the Swine Flu was in the news my mom and I both got sick, and I’m convinced that’s what we had–because our flu shots obviously didn’t work on the strain we got, and it lasted for just over 2 weeks. Just wouldn’t go away… Hang in there!
Love the song – not a version I’d heard. The one I’m most familiar with, and truly love, is this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwBngjq-I8s
So much longing and loneliness…slays me every time.
More discontinued Neroli Jasmin oil today. I haven’t had much time to think lately in the morning before leaving for work, and this keeps getting thrown on. Blooms in a lovely way in the heat, and adds a happy counterpoint to some of the current work drudgery.
Have a good day, y’all
I have that one too! It’s a favorite song of mine. Just checked my iTunes library — I also have Julie London and Jo Stafford. Sarah Vaughan does a great version too but I don’t own it.
It’s a favorite of mine too (love me some Cole Porter), and I love hearing each person’s unique take on it.
And now I am going to play each one as I get work done. 🙂
You smell great!
I’m wearing the Calice Becker version of Vent Vert, which I bought in the 90s.
My favorite version, although I’ll never know if that’s just because the older versions I’ve tried haven’t held up so well.
I am wearing Boxeuses which is probably a bit much for a humid, stormy day, but the violets, spices, and leather are all working like gangbusters to remind me why I used to anticipate each new SL release.
I am drinking some Bi Luo Chun Hong Cha.
You smell great!
Myself, etro shaal nur.
Ooh, Shaal Nur. Must dig out bottle.
Yum, me too.
Boxeuses smells amazing and so do you
It’s a wonderful perfume.
I’d never heard her sing! She sounds great, though she’s not my favorite jazz vocalist (Ella will always have my heart). More importantly, where can I get that dress?!
I’m in my beloved Safran Troublant. Kind of in the week’s theme, because it was my first perfume love after my transformation to perfumista seven months ago.
No, she’s not my absolute favorite either, but I do like her, and she also does a nice version of Bewitched. We agree on Ella!
I know your dress question may simply have been a compliment, but a lot of North American stores have a similar dress style they call fit and flare. Some even have a layer of crinoline netting underneath to give more volume. A very flattering style for many.
Vintage clothing stores often have some similar too.
Semi-earnest question! I’m not allowed to buy anything now, but as soon as I can, I’ll look for that style 🙂 It’s so gorgeous.
Try mod cloth.com.
About to hop in the shower and right now, I’m wearing no 5 Eau Premiere. Yesterday, I wore no 22 in parfum form and I think that I might have grown out of Chanel, except for no 19. After my shower, I will be wearing Shalimar.
You’ve been smelling great. The Chanels go well with Helen Merrill’s dress.
Chanel Cuir de Russie is what I’m wearing today. I wore some last night, and I could smell faint traces of it this morning, so I’m going with it again today.
You smell lovely dear.
Such a fantastic scent. You smell absolutely amazing
Good call! Why mess with perfection, eh?
I’m wearing Carolina Herrera. Reminds me of the 90s!
Speaking of fragrant flashbacks:

Oh! How sweet! Thanks for sharing this.
Woke up to a perfect summer day, and in northern Nova Scotia, that is nothing to take for granted.
Sprayed on Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel, and it is perfect.
My poor battered face is beginning to shade into the dark grey preceding green shade of bruise. It will be nice to be able to go out in public without having people stare.
I hope you recover quickly. Enjoy the sunshine, and heal!
Wearing an old favorite today, Chloe (the reissue). I wore this scent for ages, it seems like. I am surprised; I do still like it! I was debating between this and Chloe Extreme. I had planned to save this version for tomorrow but the heat index is going to be 110 and I was afraid it would be overwhelming! I guess these bottles really did have silver in the caps because they have actually tarnished!
Heh. I’m amused at your wearing reissued Chloe “for ages.” 🙂 I wore the original version from age twelve all the way through college – and that, believe it or not, was from the same bottle!
WAs thinking about it for tomorrow, but I don’t think I can manage it – too much high school drama associated with it now.
You smell lovely, Robin. I’m in vintage Le Dix again – wish I’d known about this back in the day so I could honestly wear it for tomorrow’s theme. But I didn’t, so tomorrow will be Jil Sander No. 4, the only back-in-the-day fragrance I currently own.
It is probably a complete accident (combined with good timing) that I wore excellent fragrances when I was very young! But tomorrow I think I’ll go with something post-college and arguably not as good 🙂
Today just happens to be a beautiful sunny day, so I’m pulling out Eternity Moment by Calving Klein. The initial burst of Jasmine kept me away at first but after it calms its just stunning.
I should probably try it for the initial burst of jasmine 😉
I received some Smell Bent stuff yesterday, and at first sniff I really like them all but was drawn to Green Patchouli and its initial blast of turpentine. I used to love to watch my dad putter around in the basement, and sniffing the various things relegated there was always fun. Turpentine was my favorite, and Kiwi shoe polish in the tin was a close second.
Now that the turpentine has faded, Green Patchouli is a gardeny dirt and grass cleanish dry patchouli that I’m looking forward to exploring some more.
Smell Bent makes some very nice fragrances. The whole house seems to get overlooked because of the fun names and affordable prices, but I have quite a few I wear frequently.
I have trouble with some of the SB musks smelling HUGELY dirty to me, but I really like One and Florist’s Fridge.
Turpentine reminds me of my china-painting grandmother. 🙂
I like FF too. Although someone pointed out a plastic note which I hadn’t really noticed. I guess it’s supposed to represent the refrigerated smell? Haven’t tried One.
The fun names and affordable prices makes me really want to get into them! I love falling in love with cheap things.
Great to see another fan!
I love Smell Bent. Green Patchouli is one of my favorites, but I don’t wear it very often, because one of my colleagues hates patchouli. There are many more expensive niche lines out there in perfumista land, but I doubt that they are any better than Smell Bent. I should also give a shout out to Dame Perfumery if we are talking high-quality, inexpensive niche lines. Love them both, especially since I can’t afford the big name niche lines.
Sideris for me since it’s so good in the summer
Sideris is great anytime
Yes, it is becoming a fast favorite for me as well. I think I will be exploring the line a bit more – looks like they have a lot of interesting gems.
I have to dig out my bottle. I usually think of Sideris as a fall/winter scent but I bet the incense is great in the heat.
It is nice in the heat, though I prefer it in the evening in warm weather.
Good morning Y’all!! Another HOT and HUMID one in Atlanta! Pool time with the kids after work tonight for sure! 🙂
SOTD: Burberry Body. Clean and fresh….
Our forecast was just “Very hot again today” and a picture of the state in varying shades of red. Thanks.
I received a non-descript travel spray from Kuwait! in the mail yesterday, and I have no recollections of buying anything like that. I am wearing it, and by its smell, for all intents and purposes, it is Gourmand Coquin by Guerlain. I will go look at my email receipts in a while, but for now, I am utterly amazed by my new ability to order something I want and then conveniently erase all the memories of it from my mind. At least a huge original bottle of it did not arrive!
What a nice surprise! You smell lovely. I’m so relieved to hear your story. I’ve started printing copies of receipts as soon as I place an order, then put them in their own folder, just because of this experience!
I try to think of those packages as presents from the Universe, but unfortunately the Universe makes me pay the bill.
????
I currently have a poorly poochie at the moment who is going through a phantom pregnancy, she’s very clingy and feeling sorry for herself.
It’s really warm and muggy in the UK, so have doused myself in Diptyque Vetiveryio. Nice and cooling on a day like today.
Awww. Hope your pup feels better soon. Hormones can make one so nuts and it must be worse for animals who aren’t even conscious of the cause. At least you smell great!
Thank you Mikas. I hope she feels better soon. It’s so sad knowing I can’t do anything to help.
I’m wearing Philosykos – an old favourite that I’ve never owned, until today. My new travel size bottle has just arrived and I love it. I think the whole travel line is adorable.
Scent twins! I wanted to buy the travel bottle, but the store didn’t stock them so I bought the EDP instead. This is such a great perfume.
It is! I also adore the shower gel.
You smell fabulous 🙂
Thank you!
Everyone has been giving Philosykos so much love recently that I absolutely must give it a try!
I wonder how difficult it would be to graph the usage of different perfumes by NSTers with the seasons. We might have to chart against local temperature and humidity. Hmm.
I’m in Arquiste Boutonniere No. 7, sample courtesy of the lovely Annikky. I like!
Glad to see the package arrived! And you smell bjuuuutiful.
Bonjour from Monte Carlo. Dense and rich – sounds like a chocolate, no? 🙂
SOTD = Boy Chanel in the morning (4 spritzes went poof in < 2 hours, then I switched to No.19 EDP
Steps update – 226k+ not including today so yes, I will exceed my goal!
Tomorrow, we'll be in Florence. I'm off to practice my Italian 🙂
Your trip sounds so fantastic!
Congratulations!
Florence is fantastic! Do you have SMN on your itinerary?
You are making me jealous. Florence is one of my favorite cities
Boy is so perfect for Monte Carlo!
Florence! Steak and SMN. Oh, and I think there’s art there too 😉
Well done on the steps!
Ah, Firenze! I bought a ring there (good souvenir, eh?); I’ll have to dig it out and wear it in your honor tomorrow. Enjoy! Ciao!
I got out Prada’s Infusion de Fleur d’Oranger that I bought on a Mediterranean cruise so I could feel like I was joining you. I bought it in 2009, I think, and it seemed big to me then. Today it felt light. Go figure.
Eau D’orange Verte again today, still lasting remarkably well and combatting the slightly less muggy weather today. I am wondering what to wear for tomorrow’s theme, as not sure Samsara is right for summer, so maybe Givenchy III if that doesn’t feel too intense as well.
You smell great!
Reglisse Noir this morning. This is such an appealing liquorice for me, a note that I often find just too much but I like it a lot here.
I started out in Ann Gerard Cuir Nacre, which is a lightweight leather, so light that it was just a faint whisper 2 hours later. So I gave myself a couple spritzes of Lyric Woman which blooms nicely in the heat.
I love wearing Lyric on hot days. You smell great!
Another hot day here so I’m wearing No. 19. This has been the summer of Chanel for me.
Classy summer. 🙂
Paco Rabanne Calandre. I’m not sure when I wore this, but its green woody powdery notes are quite lovely. It seems “softer” than similar era fragrances, which , on review, I didn’t ever wear because I was a single fragrance person once . My, how things change!
Haven’t smelled that one in a long time. I can’t remember, but it was either I or my sister who had a bottle way, way back when. Given you say it is green, it was probably me….
It’s not very green- although I was exclusively green for a while when I started to try other fragrances. Now I think it’s not the notes as much as the blending. When I look up the notes of fragrances I prefer, there are a few that almost always seem to be listed.
Another old favorite of mine!
Calandre is/was wonderful — you smell gorgeous!
SSS Nostalgie, which is just wonderful
Oh I remember liking this. Have to find my sample!
Wonderful, indeed!
Neroli Portofino today; I needed a good blast of summer-vacation loveliness to get me out the door on this haggard morning. I smell about 1,000 times better than I feel. 🙁
You smell refreshing. I hope it helped with the day.
Gucci Guilty today, need the confidence boost it gives me!
Inspired by Creosote yesterday, I’m giving Dame’s Mandarin, Neroli, and Cedar another go. Not super encouraging so far, sorry to say.
I’ve been scared to me the naysayer given the great price point and all the love here, but the Dame perfumes I’ve tried haven’t done a lot for me. Not sure why.
I’ve tried a handful and really like two of them, but I do mostly find they exist on a spectrum of “pleasant” rather than anything more interesting or challenging. It’s enough to keep me investigating the line, especially since they suit the hot weather really well, but I could certainly understand someone preferring a different aesthetic. Or simply not getting on with them!
I thought the 3-ingredient name ones were pleasant but too simple for my current tastes. The soliflores I’ve tried (Gardenia and Narcissus), on the other hand, seem much more sophicated.
I really like the Rose de Mai soliflore, and the soliflores are definitely the most compelling offerings.
Many of the multi-note scents smell like candles to me (not in the good way), and BFMV gives me a huge stonkin’ headache. I do really like a few of the men’s scents and soliflores, though.
Bummer. But, hey, you tried, right? I have to test the soliflores and a few of the men’s ones…
I did! And I can pass it on with a clear conscience. Or whatever the relevant part of my psyche is. And thanks for prompting me to test it again!
Egads, it’s hot out there! Even T-Rex is unwilling to venture out and hunt grasshoppers. That’s really saying something.
No need to state my SOTD (Corsica Furiosa!!) since I seem to be on repeat. However, I will note once again that this is THE SINGULAR BEST spray mechanism I have ever encountered. I would recommend a full bottle of any scent in this line just for the outstanding spray mechanism experience.
Happy Almost Friday Day to all. Stay cool????
Was just thinking I haven’t seen you in a while. Hi! Is it that super fine perfect mist? I noticed that with Botega Venetta and Juliette has a Gun. I can’t understand why some higher end niche and indie have sub-par sprayers. One of Life’s Great Mysteries. Stay cool, you two!
I love spraying my Bottega Venetta, for that very reason!
I traded away of mini of that one because I found it pretty loud. I think I need to retry it in spray format. I know it gets a lot of love here.
I don’t have either of those scents so can’t comment about quality of sprayer. I have been crazy busy and while I make time to read the column and comments, I’m too pooped by the end of the day to comment. Can’t wait to slow down a bit, but must make hay while the sun shines! Cheers!
I’ve been wearing CF a lot this summer too. Very hard to beat for this weather!
It is hard to beat! It gives the fortitude to leave the AC and venture out into the Amazonian like heat and humidity.
Have you tried the new l’Artisan Parfumeur sprayers? They’re pretty great–high volume and finely homogeneous. I’d be interested in hearing your comparison between those new sprayers and the CF sprayer. It’s too bad I haven’t seen it anywhere in a physical shop–your comments make me want to try it out just for the bottle.
I have a couple l’Artisans, but it’s the old packaging. The PdE beats every bottle I have as far as spray mechanism. This includes my much more expensive Amouage bottle.
Wearing almost the last of Escada Born in Paradise. I think this is my final wearing, and will retire my bottle after today.
Nice to finish something off!
I started early with a little bit from my sample of Eau d’Hadrien just for wake-up purposes. That (and a coffee!) haven’t seem to do the trick, so I’ll be adding something else shortly. Probably Bijou Romantique, which will go with the lemon, and will also count as new favourite of 2016.
Might have definitely put on too much of BR today as I’m working in a small shared office, and have already received one comment. Whoops. Who knew it had such good projection?
SOTD is Pacifica Lotus Garden. To me, it is a very very close dupe of Hermes Jardin Sur le nil. I did a side-by-side and I actually preferred the Pacifica as it is a teeny bit sweeter.
So excited – ordered an early birthday present for myself of CDG Rhubarb and it’s arriving tomorrow!
Thank you for the recommendation.
The Hermes is such a great summer scent, and it would be nice to spray with complete abandon.
Happy birthday early. You deserve a present anyway for your wonderful TV appearance.
Thank you! Still waiting on my Jeopardy! cash 😉 And it is very early – still a month away, but so many people have been talking about the Hermes Rhubarb, it’s been on my mind. Need to sample that one as well.
Nice to have time to plan how to spend the winnings!
I had fun watching! Enjoy those winnings.
Wearing JHAG’s White Spirit, and trying like hell to figure it out. Still waiting for the tuberose to appear…..
SOTD: PHI layered with Rose Oil. I am in heaven.
Not that I need more fragrances, but I am very curious about Mandy Aftelier’s fragrances. I liked Bigamous and Vanilla Smoke and wanted to order some samples. So, what would you guys recommend? Everything looks really good and I am not sure where to start.
Bergamoss is my favorite by a landslide, not because others aren’t good but because I love it so much.
Ancient Resins is fabulous.
That’s the body oil, right?
Yup. Not particularly oily though, I wear it as perfume.
I second that emotion
????
Also, has anyone tried Loree Rodkin’s Gothic Series? I have tried Gothic I EDP and liked it and debating if the others are worth exploring.
Sel Marin today. Last night I wore Rozy Viole d’Extrait and I fear I am really going to need a FB at some point. Need being the oh so operative word.
My Pretty Florals week continues with Maria Candida Gentile Hanbury, plus a hint of StaticGuard (which has an unfortunately strong scent).
Went sniffing yesterday after work, and cadged a sample of TF Orchid Soleil from a nice SA at Nordstrom’s; will have to try it this weekend. She said they’ll have it in stores in August. Also confirmed that my local Nordie’s now has Le Labo.
Sniffed at Lush… felt ancient when the entire sales staff all commenced to dancing and singing to a song I don’t even vaguely recognize 🙂
Sniffed at Crabtree & Evelyn… saw Arlesienne on the clearance table at L’Occitane… finally bought Oud Ispahan at Dior (it’s been on my to-buy list a while), and got a complementary teenie mini of Grand Bal. Mmmm. Sniffed and liked La Colle Noire, hmm.
Had to drive home with my car windows open lest I fumigate myself. I believe I was wearing bits of Le Labo Patchouli, C&E West Indian Lime (regretted that the instant I sprayed it), J’Adore L’Or, and the remnants of the day’s NV Pichola. J’Adore stomped the rest of them, though that C&E tried its best to keep up its end, and Le Labo Patch added a definite BBQ-leather note which topped up the cacophony. I cannot recommend this layering experiment.
Sounds like a great day!!! I gotta check that Nordies for LL – the two that are closest to me have really small fragrance department. Judging by the Dior location, I know where I need to go 🙂
🙂
Sounds fun. Patchouli is my favourite Le Labo and that alone makes one quite fragrant!
Hello, all. It’s my Friday, and I’ve been thinking about the project all week, wondering how to take part. Conclusion: I can’t. Way, way back at the beginning of time when I was a child, I had a little bottle of Evening in Paris, the blue bottle with the white minaret lid: gone into the primeval mists. My godmother gave me a little porcelain bottle with violets hand-painted on it, so I suppose that’s what it smelt of. Forward to the mid 60s. High school: a blur of confusion and experimentation. Maybe I smelt of hair shampoo–my hair was very long and I stupidly washed it every day! University in 1970: tiny sample bottles of Jolie Madame ($1 from the local department store, a worrying expense for me on 1970!). Married in 1972: I wore Vivre by, I Think , Molyneux. Fast forward to the ’80s: I had a long love affair with Climat, and wafted around the library I worked in (I was the WORST librarian in the history of ever!) smelling divine. Even got chatted up,in the stacks a few times: I’m sure it was the perfume. Now it’s the 90s: I wore L’Ete, and I know it’s still available at discounters, but I’m too scared to spoil the memory. Early 2000s, and I started with the Aqua Allegoria Vanille et Ylang. There have been others, many others, but they too are gone from my shelves. So, for this very day, I’m bring faithful to my loyal standby, Black Cashmere. I didn’t wear it back in any very early day, but it was an instant and early love in my perfumista-hood. It more than suffices, I think, at least as something that smells delicious.
I certainly think Black Cashmere counts. (I’d be going for the Jolie Madame. Or the Climat, always assuming that you have some on hand.)
No, Mals, these glories are lost in my past, , long, long gone. Sigh.
But –brightening up– I love BC, do that’s all OK.
Black Cashmere is always a wonderful choice.
I had a tiny bottle of Evening in Paris as a child too! I suppose it was the dregs of one of my mom’s. I remember she had a whole drawer full of the stuff because that was the only thing my father knew to buy her.
SOTD is Elie Saab Le Parfum, layered over honey & coconut body butter. I feel all beachy and tropical, which is pretty impressive considering I’m nowhere near the tropics or the ocean. ????
I have a tea question rather than a perfume question. Can any of you recommend your favorite online tea vendors? I love tea, but all I can find in my rural Texas town is Lipton, Bigelow, Tazo, etc. in the grocery stores. Any information would be helpful.
I am very fond of Upton, Harneys and Tea Trekker. I have bought from other places but those are my mainstays. All three sell sample sizes, and all three have reasonably informative websites. Tea Trekker is probably the most “serious” of the 3 and can be a little daunting if you’re a newbie. Harneys is more geared towards mainstream consumers (they’re the only one of the 3 that sells readymade tea bags, for instance). Upton is somewhere in between; their website is extraordinarily old-fashioned, but the teas are good.
If you’re more interested in finding some fun flavored teas, rather than the sorts of estate teas you’ll find at Upton & Tea Trekker especially, check out Kusmi, and Mariage Freres — you can get Mariage Freres in the US at a number of places, including Luckyscent and Dean & Deluca and Market Hall Foods. (Both of those brands also sell unflavored teas, I just don’t personally buy them.)
I like Republic of Tea. If you get on their mailing list, they’ll send you a catalog with a free sample every few weeks or so.
Seconding the Republic of Tea… they sell my favorite jasmine white tea.
That’s a nice one! My favorite is their Golden Yunnan. I am also very fond of their British Breakfast and Assam. Oh, and the Blackberry Sage is really good as iced tea.
I would second Harney’s. We order from them regularly. My favorites are Queen Catherine (a really nice China black tea blend) and Holiday tea (warm, soft spices and a touch of orange). They also have a nice vanilla tea. We buy them by the 1 lb bag and you can buy paper tea filters from Harney and some other places (Teavana also carries them) and make your own teabags–enough for 1 cup or enough for a pot.
SOTD = one of my true “back in the day” scents, Ralph Lauren Pure Turquoise EdP. It is also my original bottle, which has held up rather well. Yay for Throwback Thursday!
I have Pure Turquoise too. You smell lovely.
I’m wearing Hendley Perfumes Gia since it just came in the mail. Spicy, resinous vanilla and musk. I think the drydown will be gorgeous.
My SOTD was Grace by Grace Coddington (CdG). I was a bit surprised to find I like it as much as I do; I usually gravitate toward dark spicy roses rather than fresh dewy ones (Stella was a no-go years ago when I tried it). Perhaps my tastes are changing…
My pick for tomorrow’s back-in-the-day theme would be Niki de Saint Phalle, if I had any… I wore it in the 80s and haven’t smelled it since. I’ve dithered for years over buying what’s now available at the discounters, afraid that I’d be bitterly disappointed by reformulation.
If I can unearth the last teensy bit of Fidji I have, I’ll wear that tomorrow. Co-workers will just have to stay out of my way. 😉
SOTD earlier was Lolita Lempicka (original) and now am wearing Lengling A la Carte.
