It's Hump Day, and it's Magna Carta Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Kenzo Flower in the Air. Tea at the moment is a milky oolong from Tea Trekker.
Reminder: on 6/17, wear a fragrance by Kenzo, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Yves Rocher’s Vanille Noire today. Vanilla. Play-Doh. Not particularly ‘noire’. Still like it though.
I like Play Doh myself 🙂
Ah Robin, but is it JUST the smell you like?
No.
Have you tried TF Soleil Blanc? Play doh in the sun, imo.
Play doh in the sun is much cheaper 😉
My natural skin scent is similar to Play-Doh. Don’t ask how I discovered this. 😉
Im a little bit envious of your play-doh smell… I live next to a water treatment plant so my tap water- and hence I- smell faintly of chlorine. It could be worse. I’ve stopped dating guys because I havent liked their smell. The sour milk/vinegar odour seems to be my least compatible. Lol.
I have the same reaction to Aramis.
I like the smell of chlorine, probably because it reminds me of swimming pools. I haven’t experienced the sour milk/vinegar odor on a man (yet) but I did go out with someone for quite a while who smelled like boiled carrots which I associate with baby food.
I like the smell of chlorine too, but it’s probably because I spent so many of my early-teendom on a year-round swim team. Good times, good times.
Is there some kind of perfumista rule that if you give away a bottle you’ll start missing it in 5+ years? I used to own a bottle of Kenzo Parfum d’Ete (the second version, in the flat leaf bottle), but I gave it to a friend before I moved to Colorado. Suddenly this week I started missing it. But I hate to buy a whole other bottle. If anyone has a little to spare, let me know! I could swap something in return.
Anyway, SOTM is Narciso. Happy hump day.
Yes, I deeply regret giving away my Kenzo Flower Elixir….
Elisa, if you’d like, I can send you a decant of the vintage version. I have two 3.4 ounce bottles of it. They are quite different – the older version is a bit more sweet, dewy green and rose-y; the new version is more spare and dry.
That’s very sweet, I’d be happy to try it. Hope I can swap you something for it. Can you email me at elisagabbert at gmail?
Done. I have more perfume on hand than I could ever possibly use and there isn’t a single thing I need! Will be in the mail to you by Friday.
yay perfume people!!!
Yes, it is a rule:)
Indeed – only, for me, it happens sooner than 5 years. 🙂
I also miss my Grand Amour which I think I gave away four years ago 🙂
Yes. I regret almost every bottle I’ve let go 🙁
I gave away Shalimar Light and then repurchased it.
One shouldn’t underestimate the nostalgia factor either…that can take years to kick in.
It kind of reminds me of celebrities who marry, divorce then marry again…even some non-celebrities do that. 😉
ha, true!
Is the original in the flat leaf-shaped bottle that’s smooth (not the one with veins or whatever they’re called?) Is there a difference between the 2? Parfum d’Ete was my go-to summer fragrance for years but I’ve only smelled the version in the smooth bottle.
The original was the veiny one.
Both good, IMO.
Thanks! I suspected as much – I bought my first bottle in 1999/2000 but for some reason I thought it was currently being sold in the veiny bottle (which is not the case, as a quick google search revealed.)
Sampling In Every Season from Blocki Perfumes which seems gentle and pretty and spring appropriate rather than a year rounder
That’s a lovely one! It has a very vintage-floral vibe. I especially love the opening notes. And I agree that it’s more spring-appropriate.
Philosykos, another original Diptyque. I wonder what it’s like in EDP.
I joined the Dyptique week yesterday with Eau de Rose=Rose training wheels, perfect for me.
Have you tried layering it? It’s so nice with Duelle, and also the fig, and the vetiver!
I am also joining in on Diptyque week – thank you for the inspiration, austenfan! Today is Eau Duelle, which I never wear in summer. The subtle smokiness is rather nice on this muggy day, though.
I prefer the EDT. I actually purchased the EDP, but didn’t use it which was odd since I thought I loved it. Turned out it was the EDT I loved.
My early days of getting to learn perfume I paid absolutely no attention to EDT, EDP, extrait, etc.. made a few mistakes.
The EDP is less green to my nose, more sweet and heavy.
I agree with Floragal. I tried the EDP and prefer the EDT. I also got a note in it (that I also remember getting in Sonoma Scent Studio’s fig scent… Fig Tree, I think that’s the name??) that I would describe as wet clean laundry. Specifically to me it smelled like wearing clothes that have just been washed and getting soaked in a downpour… that mix of residual detergent smell and rainwater. It’s not bad, really, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to smell like wet clothes.
I have some of the EDP and would be happy to send you a bit.
I am sherainsocal and can reached via gmail.
That is very kind, I might take you up on that offer. I’m in Europe though.
I’m going to add a dissenting voice, and I say that I prefer the EDP to the EDT. I actually get an impression of fig fruit in the EDP, which I only sometimes find in the EDT and only when I go hunting for it. I also find the EDP greener and deeper. But they are both very nice.
Does anyone know how the solid perfume compares?
I love dissenting voices 🙂
It’s fab in edp. Think I might layer it with Eau Rose on Friday.
Vintage Guerlain Vetiver. Straight out of the refrigerator, it’s perfect on a warm, sunny day.
Perfect!
You smell refreshing!
I’m in the solid deodorant of Guerlain Vetiver– not vintage, not crisp, but way nicer than a lot of others on the market. The solid perfume deodorants for women are an abysmal selection– so I am now sticking to those marketed to men.
Hee-hee, thanks for sharing, I’ve been using deoderant marketed to men most of my adult life. So far nobody seems to notice. *wink wink*
Slightly jealous….????
Providence and Co Branch and Vine
Lovely!
2 more working days .. Homestretch
You are KILLING me….I think I am going to break down and possible order the sampler pack along with the sampler teas sooner than I had planned 🙂 !!!
Woot!! I stopped working last year, it was such a relief, I was euphoric for weeks. 🙂
So far so good!
BUT I don’t WANT to be an Enabler !!!! ????????????????
Branch and Vine is very lovely though, so far I like it better then love in a mist. But-Branch and Vine is better suited for this warmer weather
Ha! You already are an enabler 🙂 ..No, honestly, I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the Providence Perfumes and I am definitely going to purchase those samplers eventually…I may hold off until the fall as the summer is up in the air for me with regard to work so I may not be wearing much perfume, buying much perfume or commenting much about perfume…..
I am euphoric just thinking about it
As promised yesterday sending happy and cheerful olfactory vibes via my perfume choice of Black Flower Mexican Vanilla layered with Escada’s limited edition Cherries in the Air……
You smell delicious. I think that is one of Escadas best LE.
yes of the recent offerings from the LE Escadas it is one of my favorites…however, I am partial to the LEs from the early to mid 1990s for they had some great bases with oakmoss and other heavier base notes (they did not seem as fruity as the current offerings)….
Oh, agreed. The ones they did early on that were not LE were very nice.
Oh yes! The very first Escada perfume (came in the same shaped bottle as the LEs but was clear glass with a gold riveted cap) was stunning!!! Also the “Escada collection” each year the bottle was covered in different patterned intricate fabric…same heart shaped bottle but stouter and wider in shape…the juice was gorgeous….to my nose a very sweet , resinous, pipe tobacco….loved that one!
Yummy, that sounds really nice!
Still in 4160 Tuesdays Goddess of Love and Perfume. Why do I love all this fruit so much lately?? Must be the summer weather.
Ah, I will have to try that one.
You must! It’s that most rare of things: A real fruity chypre, with what smells like real oakmoss.
You’ve convinced me. Pretty sure I do have a sample.
What kind of fruit?
Strawberry, apricot, raspberry, blackcurrant, and yuzu.
Hmmmm…
YSL Champagne/Yvresse again. Still wonderful.
It is, I’m still cursing myself for not getting any when it was still affordable. Mind you, there is some on it’s way to me, courtesy of a very nice NST’er.
I’ve just received some from generous NST’er too!, it’s really rather heavenly.
I owe my extremely generous decant to SophieC.
Always. Have you tried the parfum? Even better.
No, unfortunately. Can it still be found?
On Ebay, usually in a 4ml adorable mini.
lovely!
Thank you!
It is lovely! Perfect for a summer evening out! Drinking champagne or in my case, prosecco!
You smell great!
Habit Rouge EDT. Nice one, though I think I prefer the EDP version. And sadly my sense of smell is weakened because of the cold.
I’ve never smelled the EDP, but love the EDT. You smell fantastic!
Almost-twins: I’m in Shalimar (so, sister?). You smell great! I have the Habit Rouge EDT but haven’t sniffed the EDP yet.
Thank you everyone for your well wishes last week, it always helps! Things will be a bit hectic still, but it is already better.
Wearing Ineke Poet’s Jasmine. Gentle and comforting, very lovely and transparent, and so nice that it comes in 15 ml. Highly recommended as an office/hospital/classroom/courtroom 😉 friendly jasmine.
Good to know that things are looking up!
By the way I’ve tried Muguet Porcelaine and I adore it. Such a well made little lily.
It is lovely! Glad to read you adore it.
Friday I need to be in the Hague for this business, do you recommend a visit to Celeste (I am fairly closeby)? (it would make the day a lot more fun I suppose…)
I like Céleste, they don’t push you, and if you do make a purchase they will give plenty of samples. They are very willing to let you sniff a lot of things, anyway.
There is also a good teashop near by: Betjeman and Barton.
Thank you! A nice teashop sounds lovely. Any recommendations (I know…this is like asking a perfumista: Any recommendations?)?
I love Yunnan teas, Matcha’s, Lapsang…but happy to try something new.
Can I drink tea there as well?
No, they don’t serve tea.
Their Yunnan Jin Meo is my favourite of the Yunnans that I’ve tried.
I also like a flavoured oolong they have called Paris s’éveille. I’m not into Matcha’s at all, all of the Lapsangs they have are good, I think, it’s been a while since I bought any of those.
Good to hear things are improving. I love the name of that perfume! I haven’t sampled much from her line.
Me too! It comes packed in what looks like a book. Very nice.
Glad things are looking up. You smell great! I really enjoy Ineke’s offerings and Poet’s Jasmine is among the easiest summer jasmines. Still kicking myself for walking away from an extra 75ml when Anthro had them on clearance.
Kicking myself as well for not getting Angel’s Trumpet…those 75 ml bottles were practically free!
I liked that one too.
Sounds lovely
Wearing a generous dose of Le Maroc pour Elle on this glorious sunny warm day. Husband commented how potent it was and asked if it was tuberose. LOL. 🙂 Nope, jasmine and rose, but he was close!
Clearly, you are training his nose well!
After my shower last night my husband said, “Wow, you smell great. Gardenia, right?” I said, “That is a close guess!!” (I was wearing Hanbury, but I figure “close” is relative, and he was trying 🙂 )
I am sampling Replica flower market layered with Korres jasmine body lotion. I smell flowery.
I am a broken record, but best lotion ever!
Really? I’m going to have to scope this out. I think some of the Sephora’s carry the full Korres line.
yes Sephora carries the body lotions and also some of the new Korres EDTs as well as the face products and make up….
It really is the best lotion. I won’t use any other.
Body lotion twins today (layered with the Poet’s Jasmine), all good.
Poet’s Jamsine is so pretty…my favorite of the Floral Curiosities is Angel;s Trumpet….
Going to try that one! Is it Datura?
I cheated via google but yes, it is datura…angel’s trumpet is also a note in my absolute favorite of the Ineke line- Evening Edged in Gold…the only leather I like to wear…..
Today is my sons 14th birthday. We are a small family, and don’t have to much planned, but he is happy as long as he gets chocolate cake. Gloomy out, so far wearing Jimmy Choo body lotion. It is very fragrant, I might not need to layer with the perfume.
Happy birthday to your young man! I’d be happy with chocolate cake, too ????
Chocolate cake is always good 🙂
Happy Birthday to your son. Enjoy the cake!
Happy Birthday to your son! I hope he enjoys the day.
My youngest is the same. A “picnic” on a blanket in front of the TV watching a movie of his choice, and chocolate cake for dessert. Nothing could be finer!
Happy birthday to your son! Enjoy today!
Happy Birthday to your son! I’m totally with him on the chocolate cake. ????
Hey, thanks everyone!
Happy Birthday to your son, and wishing you happy memories of the day you became his mom!
Happy Hump Day Everyone! My SOTD is Nectarine Blossom & Honey by Jo Malone. My all time favorite!
Nice! I was thinking about that one or Blackberry Bay for today…have you tried layering the Nectarine Blossom & Honey with Dark Amber & Gingerlily? It is SOOO good!
Ooh! I never tried those two together. I will have to give it a try.
I have 3 Kenzos. I wore Flower on Sophia GROJSMAN day, and I am not quite ready to brave it again. Two remaining are Jungle L’Elephant and Summer. Since it seems that everyone is going to wear Jungle l’Elephant on Friday, I decided to wear it today. Bonus – a rainy day.
I’ve fished out my sample of DSH Reine des fleurs. It’s a rose with a chypre undertone and unexpectedly reminds me of Mitsouko with the ambery-peach note. Really lovely this one. Suits the rainy weather too.
That sounds amazing. Adding it to my “to sample” list!
That is a really pretty one. I can’t do Mitsy, but RdF is very nice.
I agree with Oakland! Also adding to my list????
SOTD is Encre Noire, which goes perfectly with the changing wheather we’re having today (and accompanying changing mood!)
I’m in YSL Cinema today. It’s becoming one of my top “I can wear this anytime” fragrances.
So pretty!!
I love fragrances like that for Mondays. It’s so nice to have a few scents that you know will work in any situation.
Yes – Mondays! That day when I’ve already used what little brain power I have on deciding what clothes to wear, and have no decision power left for fragrance. (The rest of the week it’s the other way around. 😉 )
I’m wearing Diorissimo. I had the opportunity to smell the original back in September at the Osmotheque and I was very happy to learn that my own sacred bottle was not an imposter.
I’m eyeing a vintage mini of this one. I’d love to try it in its original glory.
Today I’m wearing Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Shimmering Body Oil.
I’ve wanted to try that for a while; the notes look great. Would you say the cardamom is very noticeable?
With the other jasmine wearers today, I’m in Diptyque EI Jasmin. Sooo good.
You smell gorgeous. I have the solid, going to wear that tomorrow. Still contemplating a FB, the dyptique website still had one some weeks ago…
Thank you! I contemplated the solid, but when I finally decided, they were sold out most places. Floralgal was kind enough to gift me a decant from her bottle.
SOTD: Comforter + Snow Fairy from Lush.
Today, I am a walking candy bar 😉
But you smell so yummy and *juicy!* 🙂 I’m rather partial to both of them.
ELDO Bijou Romantique. This one makes my eyes roll back in my head, I love it so much.
You smell amaaaaaaaaazing
I wore that a couple of days ago and revelled in my Perfect Perfume Choice allllll day! Yum 🙂
Love that one. You smell great!
You smell great! I need to get more of that one. I used up my decant. The last time I wore it, I got in the car not long after spraying, and some rubbed off my chest onto my seatbelt, so my car smelled like Bijou for weeks afterwards, especially when the car got warm.
I just read up on this – onto the list it goes!
Oh that looks so nice! Why isn’t it included in the ELDO sample set 🙁
In addition to my bottle, I have a few samples of it. Since I haven’t mailed your package yet, I’ll slip one in 🙂
Oh la la, thank you!
I have a question about 31 RC which may really be more of a fool’s errand… 😉
I know the Exclusifs have been reformulated probably multiple times and am wondering if anyone has compared the original and current versions of 31 RC please.
I have only sniffed the recent formula and loved it but I am wondering if I should play the batch code game and seek out the original formula too. I kind of enjoy hunting down original formulas (it is a sickness) and comparing but it can be a pain too.
Maybe I should just love the one I’m with…?
I’ve been enjoying the reformulated more than the older versions, actually. I find it to have more sparkle, freshness vs. a heaviness that I thought the older/original formula had.
There’s definitely a difference so you should seek out what the original smells like as you might like it better.
Thanks for the info. Mileage varies of course but sparkle is always good. 🙂
Have they?? My decants are about 5yrs old and my bottle ages vary but they smell the same as the decants to me. My fb of 31RC is about 1 1/2 to 2yrs old.
Some people are probably more in the know than I am on the reformulations for this line, but it has been about 10 years so I would suspect at least 1 to 3 reformulations in that time possibly.
Of course some people are more sensitive to changes than others 😉 (people like to rage on fragrantica about perceived changes) and perhaps my nose wouldn’t discern the differences…and yet I still wonder. But it is comforting to know they all smell very similar to you. 🙂 And good work on Chanel’s part too.
Layering CdR over Diptyque’s body lotion. I smell like soft leather smeared with creamy orange blossom and like the combination very much. Perhaps if I encounter anyone who gets “poopy leather” from CdR they will be distracted by the floral notes. Oh well, I seem to be anosmic to manure in perfumes (though not poopy cat boxes, more’s the pity).
MM, what scent is the lotion? Is it a true ob scent?
It is not a perfum-y orange blossom. More like the water-based baby perfumes like Musti but much longer lasting and stronger. And I keep lying about the name, it’s the Velvet Hand Lotion and not the body lotion.
That sounds like a lovely-smelling combo!
SOTD is Rania J T. Habernero. It’s probably too much for a summer day but here in the air conditioning, it’s just gorgeous!
I’m wearing The Different Company’s Bois d’Iris, from a decant I got from STC on their recent 5ml Friday. I like it, but it was better on the initial spray than in the dry down. Sillage and longevity aren’t that good, since I can hardly smell it two hours after spraying.
I liked that one when I sampled it but also found the longevity pretty dismal.
Donatella please forgive me. Lucky Scent sent me an email with 15% off and I splurged. I bought MDCI Un Coeur en Mai. I have been wanting it for a while but had a problem with the price tag. Today, I still haven’t taken a shower and I am wearing vintage Bal. After my shower, I will be wearing Liu.
She’ll be SO proud of you Dawn!
That is one of loveliest fragrances in the line, you did well!
I still spent over $200 for it but I wanted another perfume that was hyacinth dominant. Chamade doesn’t last on me. I can’t wait for it to arrive on my doorstep. Now it’s off to find a Father’s Day gift.
Wow, is it a specially-for-you thing? I would probably spend..erhm..whatever is left on my credit card? at luckyscent if I got 15% off 🙂
It’s for me. It’s been on my to buy list for years.
Wanted to feel effortlessly ladylike, so I put on Cuir de Lancome. I’m also trying to wear more dresses. I have a lot, and always feel like I need a reason to look nice – not today, pretty dress and ladylike perfume for no reason whatsoever 🙂
I’m not a dress gal myself, but once the weather gets warmer I’m more inclined to wear them. Cuir de Lancome, gorgeous!
Such a lovely scent. I’m a new convert on that one and so happy to have it.
It is funny. When I lived in SF I rarely wore dresses or skirts to work. Then I moved to NYC and it became the opposite. I started wearing dresses, especially linen ones in the summer on weekends.
East coast humidity is no joke! Makes one want to be as light and airy as possible …
I have a lot of dresses as well but rarely wear them. I feel so dressed up when I do. I need to just wear them!
I just bought a dress and plan to actually wear it! On the way home, I started contemplating my pale, mottled shins and then thought about self-tanner. Then I realized that I probably need new shoes, a new purse, new accessories and so on and so forth. Ah! maybe that’s why I don’t wear dresses. For some reason, I think that I should be wearing a well-considered outfit when I put on a dress as opposed to my normal thrown-on pants and shirts.
You smell great!
Started off with some Kenzo 5:40pm in Madagascar but the fuzzy vanilla was stifling me so when I showered for my night shift I switched to JM Mimosa & Cardamom. Glad I bought my sample with me because Ive needed 3 top-ups :-/
Enjoying immensely Tauer’s PHI, one I had run out of but was pleasantly surprised to find in the freebie package care of Sajani. Thanks, Sajani!
This one is oh, so beautiful with its rosey spiced apricots that last all day long.
I have to remember to wear that one. It’s so nice. You smell great!
I have the travel size of PHI. You smell great!
Yay!! This is such an amazing rose!
Love PHI. I hope there’s a splitmeet before winter hits and that there are some people who want to go in on a bottle. Otherwise, I’ll have to buy an FB for myself. I’ve not tried it in warm weather, though I’ve been tempted a couple of times to give it a try…
Serge Lutens Fleurs de Citronnier
You’ve been really liking this one, right? Must pull out my small sample.
Robin I love today’s picture. Pantone *plus* flowers *plus* it reminds me of the Kenzo poppy bottle, which I sadly do not own. So something red today once I get around to putting on perfume. Probably tobacco rose.
Yesterday was l’Attesa, which is as good as the hype. It starts off with yeasty champagne and bubbly iris, then turns very buttery and smooth with just a hint of other, whiter flowers, and sandalwood under it all through the dry down. My one quibble is that I’m not sure how long it lasts. But I was working on a book re-org and very sweaty and getting noses full of dust, so not a good tester on that front. Also the tiny sample sprays.
There are so many great Pantone images! I have to wrap up the colors theme soon because I waste too much time looking at them 🙂
SotD is Affinessence Vanille Benjoin
Kenzo Ça Sent Beau. I don’t really like it, but it does remind me of 1990s airport duty free shops, so I find it interesting to smell once every couple of years.
It is always interesting when the memory associated with a scent overrides “pure” aesthetic judgment of the smell.
Inspired by yesterday’s lavender party, which I totally missed out on, I’m wearing a DIY thing of my own (which I made a while back, but haven’t worn much). It’s lavender absolute with shiso, frankincense, vetiver, and a bit of hay absolute.
I am liking the sound of your fragrance!!!!……sometimes it is good to hold off on wearing the blends and giving them time to “marinate”….I am sure your blend smells divine!
They do need time to age, yes. And I am happy with this one. The lavender and hay are the dominant notes, but the rest contribute a dry, grassy background.
That sounds great!
SOTD: Grey and chilly! It seems that summer and spring decided to switch places for the week! So I am in Sycomore.
OOTD: Crisp white shirt, ankle length jeans and a blue scarf. Blue suede shoes.
You smell and look fabulous 🙂
SOTD is Marni. I go back and forth on this one. Last time I wore it, I was moved to look for some on eBay (enabler alert – there are lots of those minis with the terrifying doll out there for cheap!). Today, I get something sharp and/or medicinal at the beginning. So money saved.
lol! The doll is kinda cute and scary at the same time 🙂 I placed her right next to my bottle of Marni on my perfume tray.
I have found myself in exactly the same place! I absolutely love it at some moments and am ready to buy, then find myself putting on the brakes. It’s a real love/hate but I will say that both the original and Marni Rose are much more wearable and enjoyable in hot weather.
On Unhurried Wednesday I am wearing a single spritz of Bollywood or Bust, and remembered to bring everything I needed into work. Triumph!
All this Pantone talk makes me of the song Reno Dakota: “It’s making me blue / Pantone 292”
There’s an ear worm!
I like your scent choice and the song! Good connection you made.
Another cool day here… SOTD is Canoe Skive which is so so right for the day. I needed a good scent today after a traumatic sampling day yesterday. I got three scrubbers in a row — three! — and in true scrubber form, they wouldn’t scrub off. Horrors. Note to perfumers: please stop calling your fragrances “X” when they are “anything but X”. Note to self: remember that perfumers may be telling big, fat lies when they name a fragrance.
Pixel, do mind outing which perfumes? While YMMV, it could save some of us skin time and $s. Thanks.
Well I was trying to protect the guilty parties here since someone else may love them 🙂 but ok…
Carner Barcelona Palo Santo is not woody: it’s a milky gourmand. And Ys-Uzac BOM Incense is not incense: it’s a crunchy green herbal camphorous thing. And I’m utterly blanking on the third one (PTSD).
PTSD = Post Traumatic Scent Disorder
I was also perplexed by Palo Santo not smelling like Palo Santo. I have a sample and was ok with that sweet milky thing the first time. The second wearing, I found it cloying.
Flashback! I remembered #3. Reminiscence Ambre isn’t amber or ambergris, it’s hippy dippy headshop patchouli on me.
Huh. I did get amber from that one, but it was a soapy amber. It didn’t work for me.
Thanks! I don’t even know what a Palo Santo smells like in RL so the nutty gourmand Palo Santo perfume smelled delightful! YMMV is right! I have no opinion (yet) on the Ys-Uzac and Reminiscence.
Skive is great – one of my best blind buys!
Me too — and you get an enabler pin for that one 🙂
🙂
I wore skive on the weekend and I think it may have turned. Need to wear it again but it had a dead rat in the attic smell. Luckily i have almost drained my bottle but I was a bit sad about that.
Yikes! Will have to wear mine tomorrow to see how it’s doing.
Strange. I sprayed YsUzac incense on left arm and CdG Kyoto on right and they are very similar. No green, camphorous scent from the BOM Incense.
Maybe a hint of celery?
See? YMMV. Definitely more than a hint of celery on me, and no incense at all.
You must have the low calorie version!
Continuing my exploration of Jacques Fath perfumes….
Today’s SOTD is Curacao Bay.
There was a squirt of citrus notes upon first spray – then poof – it was gone. Now it’s rapidly being replaced with peppery spice, cocoa butter (thinking Hawaiian Tropic), and exotic floral notes (they list frangipani)…wondering how this one is going to develop over the next several hours. The Vers de Sud I tried yesterday had some interesting salty air notes emerge, so will have to wait and see with this one.
Happy Magna Carta Day! Big Anglo-Saxon/medieval history buff here, so nice to celebrate the signing of an important document which has had such historical impact. My favorite reading genres are historical fiction & historical murder mysteries, so for any readers out there looking for interesting reads on King John besides Robin Hood & Ivanhoe, I highly recommend: ‘Here Be Dragons” by Sharon Kay Penman, which is the first of a trilogy about the last of the Welsh Princes of Wales, and Elizabeth Chadwick has also written several novels which feature King John as a character.
Thank you for the recommendation, I am going to have a look!
Good to hear about the Faths. I was just listening to the reviews by Brooklyn Perfume Lover on Youtube, and his interview with Cecile Zarokian. I’m looking forward to testing these this summer!
Oh thanks for the heads up, I am definitely going to check out the interview. I think Cecile Zarokian is an amazingly talented perfumer!
Random and off-topic: Magna Carta is a good reminder of promises made may take years, decades, centuries even… to be kept. Human rights lawyers view it, along with the Hammurabi code, as critical DNA for the International Bill of Human Rights. I wish kids studied the revolt of the Barons and King John more thoroughly in school! My kids are rock solid on feudalism, but have only the slightest inkling about the Magna Carta…
Random on topic of magna carta: The house i grew up in was a large rambling thing built around 1910 with big wooden gates, and it was called Runnymede ( written in beautiful script across the gates). House was destroyed in the 2011 earthquake but Iexpect the gates survived.
I am more struck that the house in which you were raised was destroyed in an earthquake than by anything else… so sorry!!!… but how wonderful to have Runnymede as a place name in your childhood! One of my absolute favorite places to visit when I was little (and still today!) is Inverness (that is Inverness CA, near Point Reyes…) and it was the first place I took my boyfriend, now husband, sightseeing when he visited Northern Cal with me. That is my Scottish husband, born and raised in Glasgow.
Love Sharon Kay Penman.
Great pic. Robin! I love poppies.
I’m joining the jasmine wearing peeps today in Songes. We really haven’t had many really warm days so I haven’t felt like wearing it. I’m enjoying my own scent bubble. Nice for a stressful work day. 🙂
Ooh I love Songes!
I love poppies too! They are my favorite flower and I always wanted to love the perfume so I could buy that bottle, but it is just a big old powder bomb to me.
Have you tried the Red Poppies from Demeter? I just noticed it recently.
You smell like paradise! I have the body oil. I should have layered it today. Next time. Hope you’re over the stressful hump.
Not yet. Our fiscal year closes on June 30th then it’s a rat race to set up the new year and compile reports for the auditors. I miss summer. I haven’t had a decent vacation in years.
And Thanks! I’ve been thinking about the Songes body oil for this summer. It seems to get a lot of love.
Ugh. Stinks that summer is so busy and stressful, workwise. Songes at least smells like vacation.
Gorgeous.
???? So glad things are a bit better this week.
Annick Goutal Eau du Ciel
That was the bottle I came home with from my first Paris trip in the early 1990s…it was discontinued for a while but then brought back recently…how do you like it? I know it has been reformulated….
I think I have a pre-reform bottle. It will be such a shame once I deplete my current bottle and get the newest version if it’s different. Because I absolutely LOVE Eau du Ciel. It’s a summer staple.
I’ve flown out to CA…my mother passed away at age 92 over the weekend. She took a fall, and hip surgery just took too much of a toll. I couldn’t get there after the fall because of my own injury. but, I have treated recent visits and every conversation as if they’d be the last.
I grabbed a few travel scent choices… OJ Frangipani, Narciso and Ostara. Mom has a bottle of Vintage Avon Bird of Paradise, which she loved back in the day when selling Avon. I found it on eBay and gave it to her a few years ago…she actually teared up. I just might wear that for our small service on Friday.
So sorry to hear that, Lizzie. Wearing her perfume seems like such a nice tribute. Wishing you much comfort.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I hope that wearing Bird of Paradise will bring you comfort. My sincere condolences on your loss.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I think wearing Bird of Paradise is a wonderful idea.
My condolences for your loss, but I also think that wearing Bird of Paradise will honor and celebrate her spirit. That is a beautiful memory of your gift to her; thanks for sharing.
Very sorry to hear about your mom, Lizzie.
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s passing, Lizzie. Sending you a big hug.
Best wishes, and what a lovely story about the Paradise Bird. Thank you.
So sorry and thanks for sharing your loss with all of us.
I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, Lizzie.
How wonderful that you were able to find Bird of Paradise for her! 92 years is quite a life.
So sorry for loss. Bird of Paradise would be a great choice for the service.
I’m very sorry about your Mom, LizzieB. What a beautiful scent memory you will have with the Bird of Paradise.
Sending you love, LizzieB
So sorry for your loss. May the Bird of Paradise comfort you.
My condolences, I’m very sorry to hear about your mother.
Thank you for sharing the wonderful memory – hopefully you find solace with Bird of Paradise. Sounds like you made the most of her time, and I’m sure she many treasured those moments in kind. Stay well!
I’m so sorry for your loss. I think wearing her perfume for the service is an excellent, lovely idea!
My sympathy on the loss of your mother. That’s a great idea, to wear her perfume on Friday. My mom is 89 and I found her a bottle of l’Air du Temps a few years ago; it was her favorite perfume when I was growing up. She wears it almost every day. Best wishes to you and yours ❤
My deepest condolences on the loss of your mother. She will probably tear up again when she smells you wearing her favorite perfume. May it bring you peace and comfort.
So sorry for your loss. Perfume is such a comfort at a time like that. My mom wore Emeraude and I believe her mother wore it as well. A few years back I got her a vintage bottle of it from the 20’s or 30’s, the one in the beautiful deco rectangular bottle and the ornate box. She still has it in her closet, I don’t think she ever opened it.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I hope you can find peace in your loving memories.
So sorry for your loss.
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I hope the service brings comfort to you and your family – wearing a perfume that your mother loved will honor her in a lovely way.
So sorry for your loss, LizzieB. May you find comfort with family and with your perfumes.
Adding to all the condolences, that’s very hard. We will be thinking of you on Friday.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I think wearing her favorite scent for her is a lovely idea and I hope it brings you comfort.
Please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of your mother.
Thanks all of you for the kind thoughts. I’m very happy that BofP is a beautiful scent. I had also given her PdN Odalisque from Paris a long time ago, but I think she must have used it up. It’s not on her dresser. She also has an old container of Avon Somewhere bath powder. I think I will steal that to take home…that was the Avon scent I wore back in junior high when she was selling….
I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, Lizzie. Wishing you all possible comfort, peace, and grace in this difficult time. I’m glad you have good scented memories of your mother — may her perfumes keep her close to you always.
SOTD: La Chasse aux Papillons, which smells lotion-y to me. While it lasts, anyway. I’ve only had it on for about 40 minutes and I’m pretty sure it’s not sticking around for much longer.
Beautiful scent, but you’re right that it doesn’t last long.
Have you tried the EDP concentration?
Didn’t last on me
I do try to conceptualize its brevity as part of its charm. But I didn’t pay any money for my tiny splash bottle (those tiny bottles are SO charming) and I don’t know if I’d be able to manage that if I’d paid money for it.
And I’ve switched over to Timbuktu, which seems to do best in really extreme weather. I tried it a few times this spring and it didn’t take off, but now that the heat index is . . . something I’m not going to look at, it’s just marvelous. It took my breath away this winter when I opened it in a dry, hot room. Just wonderful.
I’ve had a really lovely perfume filled day today. I’ve been anxiously waiting on a partial bottle of Heure Exquise to arrive, I won it on eBay, but then seller cancelled transaction, as it didn’t have original box, and post man said she couldn’t send it, as flammable etc. so I sent her an AG box, and paid again, outside of eBay, so I was a bit worried.. Anyway it arrived, and smells wonderful, and 75mls left in bottle for £32, so I’m really happy. Thanks Haememelis for sending me a sample of this gem!- another enabler pin for u!
The other great perfume thing that happened today, was a box of perfume treasure arriving from another incredibly generous NST’er.
What to try tomorrow, decisions, decisions!
So glad to read the transaction went well, and what a good buy! Happy sniffings with your new treasures!
Heure Exquise is worth it – congratulations on your perseverance paying off.
I’m planning a purchase of this one as well, once cool weather hits. It’s gorgeous. Congrats!
SOTD = Chanel Bel Respiro, which is a breath of fresh, cool air on a muggy day.
Nice!
Essential oils today were vetiver and bay laurel, which I could actually smell through this cold. Now I think I hear Sycomore calling…..
I really like the scent of bay leaves, but I never thought of a bay EO.
Spritz and dash for me today–I’m wearing Une Rose Chypree from a little spray sample. Trying to decide if I should get a bottle, I don’t care for most roses but this is special.
There’s really nothing else like Une Rose Chypree!
I definitely recommend it 😉
My bottle smells better than I remember from your sample – want me to drop by and give you a full spritz?
This is so cute!
It’s such a great big, boss rose and you’re right, it’s definitely special.
Sprayed on a little Tocca Colette before boxing it up to send out for freebie meet. In warm weather it’s very musky and tenacious on me. I can still smell it after my shower. I actually really love it, but to another home it must go!
SOTD: My favorite jasmine bomb: pure jasmine oil layered with L’air de Rien.
I was putting together a little package of giveaways, and took a spritz of each one and of course they’ve never smelled more beautiful. I never wore them when they were mine, but now that I’m giving them away they have such wistful beauty. 😉
Why is that?
I know, right? I was tempted to keep it, but then I remembered that to never wear it so reason won the argument.
I gave away my Colette. I loved it when I bought it and wore it enough, but then noticed the woods in the base which came off as too raspy and ashy smelling.
And I’m going to layer some LAdR over the jasmine I’m wearing later(is that a legit excuse to leave work early?) I remember you posting that combo recently, so thanks for the reminder!
It’s a beautiful layering combo for warm weather, very sultry but not heavy.
My sister really likes Colette. And I think it might be the Tocca I like the most, but I only have a rollerball, so I don’t have the citrus opening (gin and tonic?) that other people seem to mention.
Yes, it does have a moment of lemon lime in the beginning, but the best part is the musky dry down. In the hot weather, it becomes sort of a salty sweet musk on me.
Random week continues with several spritzes of Au Dela. Not sure that I’d call it “ravishing” per the PR, but it is very pretty, well done, and not a dupe for anything else I have.
Thanks to the weekend poll I am now knee deep in The Girl With All the Gifts. I keep waiting to feel less disturbed…. but I cannot put it down.
And I’m hooked on The Rook (Thanks, Creosote)!
Yaaay! You’re in luck, then, because the sequel was just published yesterday!
SOTD is Jardin de Monsieur Li. It’s nice enough but I won’t need a full bottle. Fresh and inoffensive, it’s fine for a busy day at work when I don’t have the luxury of smelling myself with any real appreciation.
Ha! Well that is one way to look at it
I don’t need a FfB because my Nordstrom SA just gave me 8 (!) manufacturers samples.
My SOTD: Estee Lauder Private Collection
Old school love for PC!
Me too. I’ve been wearing it off and on since my teen years.
Wearing YsUzac BOM incense and on other arm, Kyoto as I was curious about Pixel’s observation. BOM Incense is a nice dusty/woody scent on me, not very spicy and no resin. However, if i huff deeply i can detect a faint trace of celery. It’s definitely not as ‘dry’ as Kyoto. I don’t like BOM Incense enough to buy but I do like it after an hour or two. I haveto admit I haven’t ever bothered to check the notes as it was a free sample.
SOTD = a generous initial dabbing of DSH’s Fleuriste, which smelled of nice fresh carnations for 15 mintues and was gone, didn’t even last through breakfast. So I sprayed generously with her carnation soliflore, Oeilettes Rouges (sp?), which I like very much. Nothing compares to Malmaison, but Oeilettes Rouges is a satisfying perfume on its own, and I am happy wearing it today.
In examining notes, I have learned that a healthy dose of carnation in a perfume results in me liking it a lot.
I live in fear of the day that my decant of Malmaison is gone. What other carnation perfumes do people love and wear? I should go on a carnation hunt, the way I did with my iris hunt a year ago. 🙂
Oeillets Rouges is one of my favorite carnations. Another favorite… I’m sorry to do this to you, I apologize in advance!… is the d/c and long-gone Prince Matchabelli Potpourri, which smells like spicy-floral carnations to me instead of dusty potpourri. Malmaison was special, wasn’t it?
Smell Bent Prairie Nymph – some people like it; I don’t — smells kinda like rotten fish to me
CdG Red Carnation – very short-lived (YMMV), sweet bubblegum but I like it
Prada No. 2 Oeillet – spicy! Discontinued as far as I know
Caron Bellodgia – powdery spicy floral; get the vintage
JAR Golconda – spicyy and $ouch$
Oh I completely forgot to mention for those who are interested-
MyChelle Dermaceuticals on sale and 20% off at vitacost……but I think it ends next week….
hmm, have you tried the Perfect C Serum? Was about to order my standby, but if anyone can recommend this one, may give it a try.
I have not tried the Perfect C Serum and did not purchase it as I am still working my way through 3 bottles of 100% Pure brand C serums…but I did purchase the facial sunscreen and the fruit peel/mask….the prices are great so I say go for it!
Tam Dao today. Immediately took me back to a lovely trip to
Thailand.
And you smell fantastic!
Sacrebleu Intense for me today, I’m in the mood for a warm, rich perfume.
I’ve seen the Magna Carta at Salisbury Cathedral–very cool.
Today is definitely Hump Day: I hit my head on the faucet his morning when I bent over to wash my face, and then about 30 seconds later my back cramped up. Nice.
SOTD is several spritzes of Shalimar from–as I think Kanuka would put it–an off-site storage facility. ????
Thanks for mentioning Salisbury Cathedral – it made me think of my very pleasant visit there. I was the only person in the chapter house and had a very chatty, well-informed informed docent (though perhaps he had some other title) impart all kinds of information. I hadn’t thought of that visit in quite some time, and it was very nice to be reminded of it.
Hey, no problem! Your visit sounds great. It’s a big bonus when you get someone like that to tell you all sorts of interesting stuff, isn’t it? My visit there is a good memory too: my friend’s family took me to visit Stonehenge, and we stopped at Salibury on the way back. …And I just now remembered there was a wedding about to take place, so we had to duck out the side.
Your well-informed docent reminded me of the time I went inside a decommissioned submarine U-995 in Laboe,Kiel Germany. It was a self-guided tour and the guy in front of me was looking at all the nooks and crannies and was taking all sorts of pictures. I had to politely tell him to move along because there was a line of people behind me fasr approaching the section we were in. He then hurriedly explained some of the obscurely-marked apparatus. His knowlege came from being assigned to a submarine for the greater part of his 25-year U.S. military career! What were the chances?
I think you just invented bump day
???? I think you’re right!
Off-site but not inside your boots! 😉
Woah, I just meant I got some free sprays at the store with a tester. What did you think I meant!? ????????
Kanuka previously mentioned she found perfume inside her boots 🙂
I’ve been in a perfume rut lately, probably related to having nasty, cold weather when I’m dying for some sunshine and heat.
Remembering that I wore it for a week or 2 straight when we had similar weather last summer, I doused myself in vintage Poison EDT. This is exactly the perfume experience I’ve been longing for – big wafts of swirling gorgeousness.
So that’s it: it’s best in warm weather. What I love about Poison is its headiness and progression, and in cold weather it just doesn’t project from my skin in the same way.
Wearing a big waft of En Voyage Zelda today. It smells different to me at different times, which I love…today it’s a cool green minty wave crashing up on a cool green mossy shore. Just gorgeous. It’s hot and steamy today and I’ve been in and out of air conditioning; Zelda is smelling great in all circumstances, although at first whiff I can picture a dark basement speakeasy where I’m enjoying a gin and tonic. Alas, it’s more like beer on the patio later, if I’m lucky!
Oh, I love the red – finally! My favorite color. And the poppies, so bright and cheery. My poppies bloomed a couple of weeks ago and I miss the sight of them smiling and nodding in the sun.
Today’s picture influenced my choice of scent: Yves Rocher Flowerparty. The bottle is shaped like SJP’s Covet bottle, with the base tinted a graduated red and a flower as the cap. A litchi/orange topnote makes it bright and refreshing followed by rasperry/rose/vanilla. A freebie with an order several years ago, it’s a ‘young’ scent, sweet and juicy, but I enjoy wearing it occasionally – when no one’s looking.
I love red, too!
SotD is Geisha Vanilla Hinoki EdP plus the perfume oil on my arms, then lavender essential oil on my feet. This accidental layering works quite well. The talk of lavender on yesterday’s scent of the day made me crave it today.
The photo at the top of today’s post is beautiful. I love red flowers and especially poppies. The Kenzo Flower bottle charms me. I need to try the flankers. I can’t quite wear Flower. It wears me out, but I enjoy smelling it across a room.
I should check my Twisted Lily sample. I could barely smell it on first application but it developed quite nicely.
Oh yes do try your Geisha Vanilla Hinoki sample again. GVH works best for me when I apply more more more.
I’ve been applying it lavishly before bedtime lately — that big, beautiful bottle delivers one hefty spray!
Guerlain #3 is “Heritage”, a complex scent with aldehydes, lavender, spicy carnations and a lot else going on. Even as EDT it has good performance. I must look out for the EDP in Duty Free. This is for me the equal of a Chanel Exclusif at half the price. :^)
Hmm, 50 ml of the EDT is half the price of 75ml of an exclusif. I don’t think the EDP is quite such a bargain.
Today on this beautiful, cool, late spring day (in which I took a vacation day mid-week to spend the day with my love for his birthday), I’m in Cape Heartache from Imaginary Authors. It was a great choice that I haven’t worn in a while.
I’m also still reeling from seeing director John Carpenter perform his music last night. 🙂 I wore Ava Luxe Ambre Fonce. It is sadly discontinued. It reminds me of a mix of Cuir Beluga and L’Air de Rien.
Anything tbat reminds anyone of Cuir Beluga smells good, in my opinion 🙂
I concur. I really love that one, and I always want to have some on hand.
