It's Monday's ugly little sister, OR, it's Tuesday, a day with its own identity, that doesn't let any other days define her!* Either way, happy birthday to Tom Jones! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Lush Silky Underwear, in the limited edition liquid fragrance version (which they really ought to bring back).
Reminder: 6/10 will be Fake it Friday — wear a cheaper alternative (it can be anything: a different fragrance, an essential oil, layered products, a combination of perfume and body products) to a more expensive perfume. Suggested by Hajusuuri.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Tom!
* Thank you to Koyel for last week's spirited defense of Tuesday.
Note: image is dried jasmine petals, via Lush USA.
I am in jasmine too, but not a fake it, Korres Jasmine Body lotion and By Kilian Love and Tears. The last one is nice enough, actually it is really lovely, and I will enjoy my sample, but not gorgeous enough for a FB and By Kilian prices.
My thoughts on Love & Tears exactly.
Agree, I adore Beyond Love though.
I adore Beyond Love too, and looking forward to trying my sample of Love & Tears, which I aquired on London perfume trip with SophieC
Those Korres lotions are scrumptious. The jasmine one is particularly beautiful and lasts forever.
I also love the shower gel…
Korres shower gels are super nice, I have Jasmine, Fig and Mango at the moment.
Now that i am finally running low on shower gels (I bought a bunch a couple of years ago!) I may need to try the Korres line.
Also agree with all the love that the Korres jasmine lotion gets. It’s a guaranteed pick-me-up for crappy winter weather. Maybe I should try it in summer?
Hands down, my favourite lotion. I wish it came in a perfume. I layer it with Narciso l’absolu.
When I first tried Love and Tears and Beyond Love, I thought: these are really nice, but nothing amazing, just expensive versions of generic soliflores. But the more time passes, the less convinced I am that these cheaper, comparable versions actually exist. I bought the Love & Tears travel set for my sister and it’s beautiful. And while not cheap, compared to some other stuff on the market, doesn’t even seem that expensive any more (I know, I’m desensitised.)
What a lovely gift to your sister!
I still don’t “see the point” of Love and Tears but I wholeheartedly agree with the rest of your comment. They are very well made, elegant fragrances. Mind you I’ve only tried some of the œuvre noir collection. My favourites out of those are Beyond Love and, no surprises there, the lavender; let’s call it Stairway to Heaven. In re Love and Tears, I think jasmine soliflores are just not as much my thing as rose or tuberose soliflores.
And By Kilian is not as expensive, comparatively speaking, as it used to be.
Have you tried Love (the Marshmallow)?
I love those travel sets, which are both beautiful and practical. I can keep the opaque travel spray handy on my dresser top without worrying about light damage, and stow the extra vials in the fridge. Perfect as gifts, too.
I adore Love & Tears, it’s my favorite jasmine (no indoles for me, thanks!) Though so far I have satisfied my itch via a handful of manufacturer’s spray samples. Might dive into a travel set someday.
I am wearing Cruel Gardenia, I don’t see anything cruel about this fragrance, it is very soft clean gardenia to me, I love it anyways.
Agree, no so very cruel. Serge Lutens should have followed Tubereuse Criminelle with a cruel gardenia…
In line with the trend of naming, we should have ‘Gardenia Sauvage’…
Muhahaha!
That would have been wonderful.
How about a Carnivorous Carnation? 😉
or Roving Rose, Rampant Rose being it’s flanker.
🙂
I rather enjoyed that defense of Tuesday. How can Tuesday be worse than Monday? It’s one day closer to Friday! Anyway….
Wearing Neela Vermeire Mohur because I’m not ready to switch to light summery citruses yet.
Great excuse to not switch to summery citruses yet 😉
I’m also in Mohur, on the feeling that something inspired by India should do well in the heat. (Also, I want to use up my sample.)
Trying Alter from Sammarco. Very lethal dose of moth-ball indolic jasmine sambac, greenish mimosa, and urinous civet. A bit of incense-y myrrh to offset. It reminds me of Kouros, and of course, urinal cakes.
Hello, jasmine fiends?
Twins! Your comment got me out of malingering indecision. I spritzed Alter lightly a few days ago, and it was a mild-mannered jasmine. Not this time around!!! After a major blast a few minute ago I’m getting a blue cheesey note along with mothballs, highly indolic jasmine and something butt.
Singing “I like big jasmine butts and I cannot lie”
hahaha
Earworm of the day! 😀
Oh, dear, ‘blue cheesey note and something butt’ 😀 The sweet banana peel of indole and the urinous civet somehow marry perfectly.
I like A La Nuit very much to have a decant of it, but this one, though rich beyond what we have had in years, feels too raw for my liking. But, I am sure some jasmine fiends will handle it like a pro!
I have had this question for a very long time, but: what does butt smell like? Normal skin? Poop? Why would our butts smell differently from the rest of our skin?
Different microenvironment equals different microbial population. Basically, the same reason why mouth smells different, I think
I’d like to think my mouth is vastly more humid than my butt.
That’s why it is populated by yet another microbial community
Animal butts have scent glands, too, for marking territory or producing pheromones. Civet, castoreum, and deer musk are perfume ingredient examples; maybe hyraceum would count, as well. I don’t know if we humans have anything like that, but to me this is one of the connotations of any mention of butt scents.
To the best of my knowledge we don’t but I think it’s just germs that cause the smell. As much as we would like to think otherwise, we are crowded with them, much to our benefit.
Actually, humans do have such glands, but I do not know if they work at all, or are purely vestigial
Just looked it up, and you are right. We do, without any function. It seems rather a random topic doesn’t it?
For a biologist, just casual chat 🙂
The likely culprit here is indoles, which are present in coal tar and feces and to a small degree in white flowers.
Flowers like jasmine, tuberose, gardenia.
Does not work for me either. To me, the scent just does not come together, besides being somewhat nasty
You’ve inspired me to put on my own crazy indolic civety jasmine–Bruno Acampora’s Jasmin (oil)… not for the faint of jasmine!
You smell marvelous!
Now that one I really like. Alter didn’t really do it for me, but I don’t know why. Unfocused, maybe? Jasmin knows exactly what it wants to be.
Yes, unfocused! I said it “does not come together”, but unfocused is a better way to put it
Woooooo…. a whirlwind of a week for me so far. So busy I didn’t even get to sit down until 2 pm yesterday and my head is exploding trying to juggle the boss’s calendar today and get his stuff sorted out for a conference next week.
But as of Friday… I’m OUT!
I have a half WFH day and then it’s all prep for the honeymoon next week. CAN. NOT. WAIT.
I’m in Journey Woman today.
Best wishes to you for your upcoming wedding!!
I’m already married. We got married in October and we didn’t do an immediate honeymoon (we’d just bought a house in the spring…) so we are doing a belated honeymoon. 🙂
You smell wonderful!
Thanks, it’s one of my favorites.
How exciting! Enjoy this time!
Thanks. I am very much looking forward to it.
Almost there! Sounds exciting! We’ve been married 5 years and still haven’t had a proper honeymoon. Our August vacation…
We always try to take a vacation once a year, but we didn’t get to take one last year (due to buying a house) so are using “honeymoon” as a way of saying WE ARE TAKING VACATION THIS YEAR AND NO ONE WILL STOP US!
How exciting!
It feels like it’s taken forever! Not much longer 🙂
The week before vacation always seems to drag out, but you’ll be there before you know it!
Do you bring perfume for an outdoorsy vacation? I always wonder what other people do … now that I am down the rabbit hole I always bring perfume.
I do actually. I have some samples I’ll be taking with me. I remember wearing Tam Dao while hiking in Yosemite Nat’l Park and actually getting a nice waft of my scent and being outside thinking: yep, perfect outdoors scent!
And you are on a Journey!
True true. 🙂 I think I’ll take a little of this on the trip.
Have a wonderful honeymoon!
Thank you so much!
I find that when the end is in sight, it makes even the worst times at work more bearable. I hope this thought helps you, too. In any case, hang in there and have a wonderful honeymoon! Plus of course we need all the details about what fragrance(s) you are going to wear 🙂
That’s very true. Luckily, I’ve been busy so the days are flying by at work.
I’m thinking I definitely need to take Tam Dao, because I had a great experience wearing that when we visited Yosemite a few years ago. I’m thinking Voile de Violette and Forest Walk. For days lounging about at the bar I’ll probably have Journey Woman or Lyric on hand 🙂
Yay!
Yay indeed. That’s all I’ve been telling myself as I look up hikes and restaurants in the parks.
Have fun on your honeymoon! It sounds awesome.
Have a wonderful honeymoon…the wait will make it even more special I hope.
Been too busy to comment the past few days…..There’s something wrong with that scenario! 4 more work days until VACATION! I love that scenario! 🙂
SOTD: Goddess of Love and Perfume, by 4160 Tues. One of the samples from my June Olfactif sampler! It’s been passed around and voted best of the samples by the office. A bit strong for the office…next time I’ll save it for date night. But hey! Perfume Grinch is still on vacation, so we’ll smell it up around here while we can! hee hee
Stink it up!
Wearing Tubéreuse by Annick Goutal. It’s wonderful, and great in the heat here in the Netherlands.
It really calls for white flowers doesn’t it?
Hmm I have to check that out. A good tuberose decant to enjoy a dab is
nice.
Beware, it’s discontinued.
Nooo????
http://graindemusc.blogspot.nl/2010/04/annick-goutal-tubereuse-raw-flower.html
It’s only review, I guess it didn’t sell, and was expensive to make.
I love the Netherlands
I read my daughter Pluk and his friends and Jip and janneke , this morning before work..the English versions
What a nice comment. We grew up on Jip and Janneke, and Pluk. I think Austenfan too.
Thanks, I didn’t grow up on Pluk, but Jip and Janneke was read to me from a very early age. I still really enjoy Schmidt’s songs and poems, she had quite a subversive spirit.
Have you tried any of the children’s books by Astrid Lindgren?
No- I will look them up!
For really small children “The Noisy Village” series might be nice as would be “Lotta says No”, “Lotta makes a mess” and “Mardie”. Great favourites of mine were “Seacrow Island” and the “Detective Blomquist” series. I don’t know if the latter was translated into English.
I’m so looking for these books for my kids. You totally got me with “subversive”!
I thought I might.
Lindgren and Schmidt are from the same era, and both led quite unusual lives. I might prefer Lindgren, but unfortunately I can’t read her in her own language.
Ha! Ik wil niet meer ik wil niet meer ik wil geen handjes geven…en als ze kwaad zijn zeg ik: bil! (fits the butt discussion I suppose).
Hello, NSTers! SOTD is Rania J T. Habernero from a sample from the generous folks at Jovoy last week. I am loving it; it makes me think of a much more wearable version of Orto Parisi Stercus. Finally got a bottle of Boudicca Wode that I had been wanting since visiting Jovoy the previous year. Enabler husband made me have my picture taken with the owner because “he’s famous in your world!” We made it into the Chanel shop at 31 Rue Cambon and smelled Boy, which is nice but very unlike most of the Exclusives IMHO and rather disappointing in the dry down. It seemed soapy; very nice, expensive soap. Managed to check out a TK Maxx in London and scored a bottle of L’Artisan L’Eau d’Ambre for £19.99, as well! Happy Tuesday to all!!!
Welcome back! You trip sounds like it was wonderful, and how adorable of your husband to think of taking your picture. That will always provide you with a great memory of your time together and his thoughtfulness.
Chanel really needs to step up their game for the Les Exclusifs!
Nice expensive soap actually sounds good to me. Congratulations on your TK Maxx deal!
Got (pleasantly) sidetracked from orange blossom week by Eau de Guerlain
A great way to celebrate summer. Still the best cologne, imho of course.
Oh about this one, is it in the bee bottle? Do you smell anything remotely carrot, rooty, dusty?
The bee bottle, yes. Dusty, maybe, but I’m not so good at identifying notes
I asked because it has the highest dose of orris absolute! And, I wonder if that really pricey dose makes a difference to a citrusy verbena cologne.
A sample of Indult Rêve en Cuir, the least leathery leather scent I have ever smelled. Basically vintage Eau Sauvage.
I love Reve en Cuir! Somebody described it as a leather belt baked in a pastry. Meaning it as a compliment. Vanilla + leather = who would have thought it a match made in heaven!
I love it too! I just discovered it after the last leather week.
I have been meaning to try this one and always forget to ask for sample!!! Need to keep better track!!
I can send you a sample. Write me to librik on yahoo.
Trying out Marlowe from Jardins l’Ecrivains. I’m getting a warm/cool mix of osmanthus and churchy incense. So far I’m enjoying it.
I love Georges from that line.
That was the other sample I ordered, but it didn’t work for me. Mostly, I got a soapy neroli and nag champa. I can’t handle soapy.
Are you sure it was George you tried? It’s a balms and resins bomb. Or maybe they mislabelled the sample.
It was labeled George. Next time I’m at Twisted Lily, I’ll give it a re-sniff.
That sounds lovely! Osmanthus is beautiful.. I’ve been meaning to purchase some more Osmanthus Interdite, my favorite osmanthus scent.
Osmanthus Interdite is really pretty. Lots of rose in it too, and it’s so *juicy*.
I’ve never tried that one. It sounds really nice.
Potential splitmeet??!!
Incense makes sense for Marlowe, though ever since watching Only Lovers Left Alive, I always imagine Christopher Marlowe as John Hurt hiding out in Morocco.
Ha! That was a fun movie. Languid, stylish vampires.
My fever sick last week has transformed into a gunked up ear/nose/throat thing. I can’t smell a damn thing– not the cat’s litter box, not the aura of bacon that surrounds the local diner, not the two sprays of Songes I just applied. Too bad, because I was in a testing mood. The day is not ruined though — I’m getting a massage this afternoon , and if there’s time afterwards, I’ll go to the Scooperbowl
I can assure you…you smell gorgeous!
Songes is a great one but it’s too big to wear to work. I feel off without applying perfume in the morning so I’m just going by memory at the moment
Yes, you do smell beautiful! I hope that clears up soon. You’re not missing out on the litter box.
Ugh, get better! A massage can’t hurt 😉
Hope you feel better soon. Having your ears/nose/throat be all gunked can be really debilitating.
That would seriously frustrate me not being able to smell all that bacon.
Oh, bummer. I hope you feel better soon!
Phooey on being all gunked up. Get well quickly!
No bueno on the cold stopped up can’t smell nothing. Summer colds are the worst. Hope you feel better soon.
In a white floral mood – Carnal Flower. Ugh, it’s so pretty.
I want to try the new Carnal Flower After Sun Balm – wowzzzza!
I didn’t know about the after sun balm but now I want it! They have Carnal Flower hair mist too … it is a perfect post-beach scent. Actually, I’d take a big bottle of Carnal Flower, as I only have a sample, and the body/bath products, but I don’t have $1000 lying around 😯
The after sun balm is only $95! Bargain! I bet it’s lovely on.. and who needs the sun to wear it 😉
you smell wonderful.
Ahhh, you smell great.
I passed by this lady the other day and she had the most beautiful sillage in the tram. I asked her if she put some tuberose perfumes on and said that it smelled so nice on her. It was the Carnal Flower hair mist — do you even need perfume for this one?!
Big savings with the hair mist – 100mls for $170 (vs. $380 perfume)! Maybe…
Uh oh!
Slept miserably last night, so am in vintage Chanel 19 EDT today, hoping it will help keep me upright. More coffee pls. 🙂
Invisible Armor ought to help. Pass the coffee, please.
I did as well. It was so hot last night here. I hope No.19 extrait will fare
nicely in the tropics when I move there. Sigh.
Joining in the slept rather crapily club. You smell great and hopefully it helps.
I woke rested, but also sore, so I’ll be joining y’all in the grumpy club.
Thanks y’all – nice to know I’m not alone. Hubby (who falls dead asleep in 20 seconds flat most nights) was entirely unsympathetic this morning, which did nothing good for my mood either. But he made the coffee and hand-delivered it to me, so I guess I’ll let him live. 😉
Good morning, friends! Gorgeous day in NYC today, almost didn’t go into the office preferring to sit outside at the local LPQ with my laptop and an iced coffee but.. here I am.
I’m trying a new scent today from samples received at Oswald’s when they hosted a party for Il Profumo. Quai des Lices (not a fan of the name!) is a creamy patchouli with mimosa and tobacco, beautifully blended with no hard edges a touch of sweetness and very good staying power. Good unisex scent and possibly the summer tobacco I was looking for.
Ooh – that sounds really nice!
The weather is so nice today
Sitting around in the extreme dry down of Frapin 1270. After my shower, I will take out Lyric and spray liberally. I still can’t get over that I only paid $100 for an still sealed 3.4 ounce bottle. I think that Lady Ruth Perfumes wasn’t going to carry Amouage any more so, they were having deals on Amouage.
That is an amazing price, lucky you!
That is a ridiculously good price. Nice score!
Celebrating what should be the last insufferably humid day this week with Parfum d’Empire Iskander.
My son is graduating from the eighth grade today! I am so proud of him. Also very nervous. Sotd Miss Dior Le Parfum.
Congrats to your son (and you)!
Congratulations! But why nervous?
Nervous, because he will be going to high school and have to face a little more of the world. I, of course, want him to become independent, but I want to keep him safe.
Aww. Now I understand what my mother must have felt when she called me every weekend when I went abroad at 14.
I bet she was a nervous wreck!
Congratulations to him!
Congratulations!
Awww! Congrats
Thanks everyone!
Congrats, proud mama!
Proud mama. So sweet..
Awww congrats to the little man and proud mama. You smell lovely.
Thank you. I didn’t even know Le Parfum existed until the other day. I smelled it and thought, this is so me. it really is lovely.
Congratulations, treasure the moment!
Congrats!
Wearing Salome to work. There was a discussion about it yesterday and I thought I’d give it another chance even though I wasn’t a huge fan the first time. I still don’t care for it much when it first goes on, but about a half hour later, it’s so dreamy.
This isn’t really “appropriate” for the weather or the environment and it got me thinking about my outdoor, summer wedding. I’m starting to think I might need a lighter scent as a backup, just in case Shalimar feels too heavy that day. On one hand, I always love having an excuse to sample, but on the other hand, what an enormous amount of pressure.
I wear Shalimar all year long, I just switch from parfum or EDP to lighter concentrations (EDT or EDC) when the weather is warmer.
That’s such a good idea, thank you! I’ve heard that the even the lighter concentrations of vintage are pretty substantial. Do you wear vintage or modern when you choose a lighter concentration?
My Shalimars are all fairly new (within the last 5 years or so), although I’m sure older versions are even better.
I’m very rosy today in Body Shop rose lotion topped with Annick Goutal Quel Amour. I really love the AG roses, especially in warm summer weather.
You smell wonderful! Is it the new roses Body shop lotion you are wearing (the British roses or something)? is it nice?
I wanted to know about the TBS rose lotion too… I had Moroccan Rose body butter and loved it (especially layered under No. 19), but used it all up, and the Atlas Mountain Rose was, I thought, very thin in comparison.
I think its called Atlas Mountain Rose body butter, or something like that. I bought it a few years ago to replace an empty tub of Moroccan Rose body butter, and its not quite as rich (boo). I haven’t tried their most recent rose offering – hope its still nice.
Yeah, I was not a fan of Atlas Mountain Rose. Haven’t tried the English Rose yet (I have to hit up The Body Shop when I travel because I don’t live anywhere near one).
Atelier Mistral Patchouli is my SOTD. Happy Tuesday!!
you smell great!
Oh, this is speacial! A salty patchouli to me. Driftwoods and sea salt.
You smell great!
I’m wearing another old favorite, Donna Karan Gold.
Mmm, lovely.
SOTD: 31 Rue Cambon. An all-time favorite.
So good.
(In other news, I finally have a package ready to send you! 🙂 )
ooo I’m excited! hoping your package arrived unscathed?
It did, thanks so much!
Now I can see why you also like Boy Chanel! I have not really lived with 31 Rue Cambon, being late in the perfume game, but from what I sniffed, it felt really complex!
methinks a bottle may be in your future. 😀
Oh Boy, Boy.
😀
Love that one
31 Rue Cambon was a “slow burn” for me. Now I think it’s gorgeous.
Beautiful!
Ditto. It is truly amazing.
I went ahead and sprang for the big bottle over the weekend in a moment of clarity for those who were wondering which size I wound up getting.
I saw a thread on Basenotes about potential price hikes and/or even changes from EDT to EDP for the Exclusifs potentially later this year or next…which are rumors but no one likes price hikes and I live in fear or reformulations in general ehaeheh so I had to strike while the iron was hot.
You smell absolutely fabulous!
SOTD is Annick Goutal Rose Splendide. It’s the first time I’ve worn it since last summer and it is so lovely!!
Almost scent twins (I’m in Quel Amour today). Aren’t her roses great?
Yes they are! I also adore Ce Soir ou Jamais! I’ve almost bought a bottle of Quel Amour a million times! If Rose Splendide had never shown up, I’d probably have some.
I love Rose Splendid! It makes me think of the beach roses we used to walk past on the way to the beach on family vacations as kids.
It is very fresh and bright. It also makes me think of perfect sunny summer days with big puffy white clouds racing across the sky. Exactly the day we had today, so it was fitting.
GREAT. The neighbors have moved their donkeys back into the field which borders our house. Just *great*. There will now be no sleeping past 5 am. (They’re otherwise good neighbors, and it’s been a couple of years since the donkeys were here instead of guarding cows at their other piece of remote farmland in the next county… still. Not happy about the donkeys.)
SOTD is Chanel 1932 again, and it’s just so lovely.
Do you wear the extrait or the EdT?
Both. Dab of parfum, little spritz of edt.
Wow, that’s fantastic. You smell amazing.
Great way to experience the bright side of the EdT and the richness of the parfum!
you smell lovely!
Do they eat thistles, perchance? 😀
I don’t know! I’m not getting near them, they are grouchy! (This is why they are guard animals.)
Ugh. Distance really does make the heart grow fonder in the case of bawling and braying farm animals.
For a NYC dweller this is just the most bizarre image. Sounds downright awful!
I’m used to the bulls. And Gaze’s sheep, and the neighbors’ goats, and calves. Anytime we have a bull in our field and Tommy has a bull in *his* field, they bellow at each other frequently, but most of the time, the sonic frequency of the sounds the bulls make is low enough that it doesn’t trouble me. In fact, very often it sounds like a cell phone set to vibrate and placed on a hard surface, this sort of low buzz. (More than once we’ll hear that sound and ask each other, “Is that your phone, or is it a bull?” My daughter was Skyping with me once and asked the question, sending her city-grown roommates into fits of laughter.)
Donkey brays are much more difficult to ignore.
I grew up with a donkey named Jasper in the field next door. He was cute, sorta grumpy, always dusty. I remember him fondly and still remember hearing him bray. I used to feed him carrots.
Donkeys. Are they cute at least? I stay at a friends house in the country a lot and the neighbor’s horses and chickens and rooster are all fine, but they just got guinea hens who come up to ‘our’ place and making an ungodly racket. And their goat was loud and annoying too. He also would get out and knock people over.
Donkeys cute? Nope. 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gROO7xSTxfY
OMG! But I still think the ears are really cute. ????
I’m with you on the ears. We have donkeys close by and they are super cute and when they bray they make a noise like you imagine the insane Mrs Rochester would make. Really startling and incredible, completely bonkers and LOUD. Our neighbour has just brought home a huge kune kune pig which guzzles and grunts all day…. And we’re not even in the country, just middle class suburbia with an influx of hens, goats and pigs trying to create River Cottage life styles.
Burrows are the cute ones. 😉
I think donkies are cute. Especially the Scicilian donkey.
Oh dear. My sympathies on the donkeys! I had to spend a few weeks on a dig working not 10 feet from a donkey. Never again.
Oh dear. I’ve never really thought about donkeys being loud. U fortunate. I do love goats…comedians of the farm animal world.
Breaking out the JM Velvet Rose and Oud, even if the weather might be a little warm for it.
Did you go for the FB on your travels?!
Why yes, yes I did. The duty-free price made just enough of a difference to make me scoop it up!
Dulcis in Fundo – yummy orange creamsicle goodness!
A creamsicle would be refreshing right about now
I haven’t tried much in the Profumum line, just Confetto I believe–what are your favorites? Also, wondering your thoughts on Vero Profumo? I haven’t tried that line at all, but I’ve heard good things.
Just butting in to say I’ve really fallen in love with Vero Profumo. It’s confusing to try them out because each scent comes in an extract, EDP and Viole form, but I am in love with Mito EDP, Rozy EDP and extract, and in deep like with Onda. Still exploring too.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Also they strike me as very different from Profumum. The latter perfumes, at least the ones that I’ve tried have a smoothness about them, whereas there is something very earthy, although expertly done, about Vero perfumes to me.
Profumum favorites are Vanitas, Dulcis in Fundo, Fiori d’Ambra and Olibanum. As for the Vero Kerns, I like all of the first 3 in extrait (Onda, Rubj, Kiki) and also have the Rubj voile d’extrait and Onda in edp. Rozy is great but smells very similar to Onda on me so I didn’t buy it. Mito is very green and I am not into green scents.
Thanks!
Commando today
Tea is homemade chai
Testing out a a new mascara today and wearing my favorite Panama hat
homemade chai is simply magical, enjoy! which mascara?
My fourth anniversary with my boyfriend is coming up, and I’m at a TOTAL loss for presents. (What does a grad student get someone who earns nearly ten times my stipend?!) So I’ve made him a few jars of chai mix 🙂 It smells great; I hope it tastes good, too! Hmm, maybe I should test it out in advance.
Add a foot massage ;-)? Home made presents are lovely. What did you put in the chai?
I suppose he could get a foot massage out of the deal 🙂 There will definitely be homemade crystallized sage and mint leaves in the box of presents!
I toasted cinnamon, cloves, red and black peppercorns, fennel seeds, cardamom, and coriander seeds, then tossed them with crystallized ginger and Darjeeling tea!
Wow, that sounds AMAZING! Now I really want to try making my own chai!
I encourage it! It’s not difficult, and the red peppercorns (or are they pink? they’re les baies roses in French, but they look red to me) really make it look lovely.
Handmade things are nicest, but, if you run out of time, I’ve found gifts from Zingerman’s to be reliably well-received.
I’ve recently fallen for Benefit’s They’re Real! mascara. Good stuff!
That is a good one, but the spiky ball at the end of the wand scares me! I’ve also been wearing Clinique high impact mascara. It stays put but is easy to remove at the end of the day.
Homemade masala chai is the best masala chai!
I will miss my in laws when they leave this month!
There homemade chai is the best and I will have to watch how it is done. My father in law and mother in law argue on which is the best way to make it – so funny!
Let us know how your sweetie likes his gifts.
I am sure some NSTers would happily test your batch 🙂
Wearing Byredo Pulp. It is so much fun, for some reason, whenever I wear it, I feel like I am being humorous and witty
You do smell fun!
Ha! I think that’s true!
J feels it almost daily now and it never fails to improve my mood in the morning.
And that made me laugh! (Res ipsa loquitur?)
It is warm and humid here today, so I pulled out one of my summer favorites, Yuzu Rouge by 06130.
Cassis…Verveine…Pamplemousse…yum!
That’s good stuff. I enjoyed my sample of it.
I was trying to think of that the other day. I believe it was one of Chandler Burr’s early unlabeled scent selections, and one that really deserved highlighting.
Oh, was it? I never really followed those.
I decided to get out my neglected decant of Fille en Aiguilles today. It’s really more a fall/winter thing I think.
Hooray for Tuesday!
Lab sucks right now, due to the incompetence of many very stupid people. (Sadly, I must include myself in that list, too.)
To try to cheer myself up, I, like many others, completely failed to put on a fake-it perfume, and am instead in Amouage Sunshine. I love how subtly sparkly the bottle is, but it’s so expensive that I’m not even tempted to buy it, even though the juice is lovely.
Who cares about being (in)competent, when you are so witty?
Thanks, Annikky <3
Twins! Though I think in some ways many folks consider Sunshine to be a ‘fake’ Amouage. Or, to put it another way, it seems to be the Amouage for people who don’t generally get along with Amouage (like me).
So, see: we are faking it after all. 🙂
Why is that? Is it that different from their other scents? Different in…spirit, whatever that means?
Here’s an amazing Tuesday:

Definitely nobody’s ugly little sister, she was married to Pinchas Zucherman after Dudley Moore.
You now what’s fun? Figuring out that Chanel No. 5 extrait makes everything* better. I’ve been layering it with No. 5 edp and Eau Premiere, Gardenia, and Beige.
*OK, maybe not everything, but almost everything.
That sounds like a fun layering experiment!
I woke up and unbranded my hair to find that it still smells quite distinctly of Epic. Perhaps The Husband was right about the strength of my sillage yesterday. In any case, I topped off with more so that should keep him at arms length. He feels somewhat better today and Mom gave him a long list of chores to keep him busy.
Doolittle decided that she wanted to be perfumed today as well. She has managed to find a large amount of juniper sap and smear it throughout her thick, spotted tummy fur. She smells great, but doesn’t like the taste much and is quite sticky to pick up and cuddle 🙂
I’m wearing The Body Shop’s Moringa body butter on my legs and Le Labo Lys 41 on my upper half. This is a great combination! And I have not worn Lys 41 since last summer and forgot how good it is. These uplifting floral are helping to wake me up a bit on this drowsy-feeling day.
I really like the Moringa line! Am wearing the body sorbet on my legs along with Joy.
Me too! I used the shower gel a couple years ago and will repurchase it when I need more shower gel (I tend to buy way more of those than I can use quickly, so it may be a while).
I showered with Moringa gel today!
It’s really lovely, that gel.
Hello all-
Very hot weekend, which would have been enjoyable, but found out there were deaths in my (estranged) family. The emotional pain combined with heat has thoroughly exhausted. I have been forcing myself to at least eat a little.
No faking it today. Am wearing Joy on wrists and ankles. Maybe by wearing it I can feel Joy again.
My condolences. Hope the perfume helps a bit.
Hey, thank you. And Joy is so wonderful.
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Sending you a big hug and my condolences.
Thank you for the hug. 🙂
Sorry about your difficult weekend; I hope you’re doing ok
I am so sorry.
I’m sorry. Sending hugs from stormy Brussels.
Hey girl, thanks!
Condolences, and I wish you peace.
Peace comes with acceptance and plenty of tears. Thank you.
So sorry the hear that
Argh. Complicated family pain. It is tough. I hope you find ways to feel better. Cool showers and Joy is a start!
Thank you. I have swimming A LOT, and Joy is so beautiful and elegant. It’s really does help.
My condolences. I am sending you supportive thoughts and wishes for healing. Take comfort, too, from the lovely scent of your Joy.
Thank you so much.
It must be extra hard. Hope Joy helps.
I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope the Joy is helping.
So sorry. Sounds complicated. I’m hoping you find some comfort and supportive folks and some joy. Hugs to you.
My condolences on your loss. Hope you can find some resolution/closure eventually. Treat yourself gently.
So sorry — that’s really rough.
So sorry for your losses!
Right, I know it’s my own fault, but here I am again running late for an international connection. I didn’t want to travel with 2 suitcases so decanted everything into one. Everything, that is, except my Eurostar ticket to London, Oyster card for London, and rail ticket for tomorrow from London back home. So now I’m rushing back to the apartment before I race to the Gate du Nord. :^(
SOTD is Arquiste “L’Etrog” which is nice enough but unnecessary, even before I take the short lifespan into account.
And thanks to the marvels of technology, here I am at the Gare du Nord, on time. Metro was heaving and my big heavy suitcase has had a flippin’ walking tour of Paris, but I made it with time to spare. L’Etrog by now a distant memory.
L’Etrog isn’t my favourite Arquiste either, but I love a couple of others.
I found L’Etrog curiously addicting! It is the scent I carry in my handbag–decant courtesy of the ridiculously generous Laura.
Just in a little spritz of Eau d’Orange Verte. In anticipation of perfume samples in the mail today, and I need to save some skin space.
Lolita Lempicka l’eau en Blanc today. A little too powdery for my taste. I confess I bought it for the pretty bottle. Will have to start giving away decants, because I will never use it all!
Continuing to sample Luca Turin recs, I’m wearing Baruti Chai. It is rather like PG Indochine plus a suggestion of the caramelized scent of PG Rose Brulure. It smells very good, and I would particularly recommend it to Sun Mi, who was looking for milky scents.
I tried Baruti Berlin im Winter last night. Although there is more to the composition, I was mainly aware of the mouth-watering scent of cassis. The weather isn’t really right for it now; I’ll need to test it again this fall.
I bought my Baruti sample set from IndieScents.
Did you get “Indigo”? I liked that one enough to get a FB. :^)
I have that sample but have not tried it yet. Now I’ll be sure not to skip it!
I saw a footnote on Berlin im Winter indicating that it is a reworking of Indigo.
Ooooooooo love cassis. Adding to the ‘to try’ list…..
Oh that sounds amazing!! I have been debating getting the samples, might just take the plunge next month
For some reason I had thought of tuberose as a cold weather note – why I don’t know – but inspired by several here I am now wearing Carnal Flower on one arm and Moon Bloom on the other. Moon Bloom, which has seemed too much for me in the past, is smelling pretty amazing.
Told you!
😉
I should always listen to you!
Hmmm, I had a horrible run in with Moon Bloom the first time I tried it a couple years back, like tuberose meets burnt rubber meat? But now I think I will dig out my sample and try again. You never know when that moment of “getting” a scent will hit!
My husband remains against it. Turns out tuberose has now been identitied as ‘that thing he hates.’
Le 3em homme from a vintage mini, and I just wanted to be refreshed but I also smell amazing????
It definitely changed my mind about lavender perfumes. If all men everywhere refuse to wear L’Instant, as seems to be the case, I would accept 3em homme as an alternative.
Are you two talking about the Caron scent?
Oui!
Have you tried Pour Homme? If so, how did it compare? I LOVE my Yatagan, but gifted away my Pour Homme.
For the record I do like Pour un Homme. And I think that one might last longer than this one does (which is, to be fair, an EdT splash). This is definitely just about gone 4 hours later. But made my bus ride (!) smell delightful.
Oh man, I would totally find this acceptable, too. I like pour un homme, but this is less overtly lavenderistic and more nutty and blended.
A cool-weather day and someone’s mention of it yesterday made me reach for Pierre Balmain Ivoire de Balmain today. I’m not doing anything remotely deserving of this ‘hair-up’ elegant fragrance except to bask in oakmoss heaven! Love this one.
That was me! It is in the Classy Lady category for sure…
Safran Troublant and a cuddly sweater on this cool, foggy morning. It’s my first week back at work full-time since my maternity leave, and my babe is with his new nanny and away from both his parents for the first-ever time. I’m sure they’ll be fine together, but I can’t help but feel alarmed on some atavistic level!
My first day back at work I hid in the bathroom and cried
🙁
Sounds like your are doing much better then me
Oh god, sending you retroactive hugs! I’m really fortunate to work for an organization that happily gave their blessing to my taking a long-by-American-standards maternity leave (six months) and then working half time for another three). Now that my little butterbean is approaching ten months old, I feel a lot more confident leaving him alone with someone than I would have some months back. I cried on my whole commute to work when I first started back part-time, though!
You poor thing. I usedto feel sick to the pit of my stomach whenever I left my son. Heart vs. brain tugging of emotions.
My Auphorie samples arrived from Indonesia, a small miracle in itself. Believe the hype about Miyako, which is singularly the most beautiful thing I have smelled this year. If you love osmanthus and leather, if you are fascinated by a fragrance that slowly opens up like a flower on skin, get a sample!
Sounds beautiful and I will check it out….love leather.
Oh gosh, there goes my no more sample buying any time soon resolution!
Okay, then I’ll definitely commence that Herculean endeavour *after* I pull the trigger on the Auphorie samples, and since I’m already reneging (just temporary!) I may as well get L’Attesa and see what else is sitting around in various carts because buying one sample is wasting resources, right?
I keep adding/ removing Miyako from my sample cart too. Think I will stick with getting Romanza instead, but would love to try L’Attesa. Do you know when/where samples will be available?
L’Attesa is available now at Twisted Lily. I adore Romanza!
You get to spread out the cost of shipping by buying more – spend more to save more!
Yes Miyako amazing? I have never smelled anything like that.
I ordered that and a 2 of the others last week after reading that review so glad to hear it’s living up and that it made it from Indonesia. How long did it take?
World Oceans Day ( it’s Wednesday 8th ) and I was reading a sobering story about the coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef and how divers describe themselves as ‘stinking’ of rotting and decomposing marine life after diving in the water around the worst part of the reef. Pretty desperate times. Wearing New Musk pre- getting out of bed, then will switch to Blackbird for my morning walk in the forest, then Lale for writing a talk at the kitchentable, then more Lale for more work, then I need something really special to get me through the mind-numbing boredom of 1 1/2 hours of hanging around while my son goes through the motions of playing sport. If i was president I would ban after school activities and the mis-named ( hell) of sleep overs …bahaha.
The wretched state of the oceans fills me with sadness…and dread.
I don’t know how we are gojng to survive what we are doing to the planet
Femme de Rochas, current version. This (now sadly discontinued) great classic still can be found for a song at discounters and “plays in the same position” as Lutens’ Arabie, being more wearable while just as cumminy and satisfying.
I got my bottle for $10 or $15… which is probably a good thing since it still overwhelms me a bit too much to wear 🙂
No no nooo! I know there was a different packaging edition recently, but is it really discontinued?!?
Wearing Nicole by Nicole Richie today. Thought I’d finish the sample, but there is one application left.
Robin, you smell great! You inspired me to go with Lush for today, so I gave myself a generous spritz of The Smell of Freedom.
I have to admit that any mention of Tom Jones makes me think immediately of The Fresh Prince (specifically, the ‘Carlton Dance’) and Mars Attacks!, but that’s just me. ????
My first Tom Jones thought is always John Mulaney’s “Salt and Pepper Diner” bit (it’s on YouTube and very funny).
I hadn’t heard that before–funny!
Oh no, it isn’t just you!
Good, that’s a relief!
Hey cousin!
Worst Wednesday ever! Izzy’s sprained her right front paw, probably whacking the gorgeous but gormless Dakkie round his ear hole, and I’ve caught the dear man’s loathsome complaint. I feel wretched. Can’t talk (oh the frustration!) but can smell, so I’m wearing Epic in room-clearing quantities, just because, and I’m hunkering down to fight this thing off. Be well, everyone, and whatever you do, don’t get this lurgy!
Time for a proper Irish-style hot whiskey. Measure of Irish whiskey, spoon of brown sugar, thick slice of lemon with 3 cloves stuck through it, top up with very hot water. Sláinte – literally and figuratively! :^)
Oh no! I hope this all passes quickly!
Hot buttered rum. I probably shouldn’t admit this, but as a child I always hoped my cold would get bad enough that Mom would administer a (very small and weak) hot buttered rum. I suppose it wasn’t any worse for me than that awful codeine cough syrup and it was certainly easier to get me to swallow. I also got to drink it from one of the special little Herend demitasse cups, which made me feel like a princess.
I prescribe a hot drink in a princess cup, at least one cat for warmth, and a good but not too intellectual book.
Bundle up, drink plenty of fluids, and get well soon! And I think you should try Koenigsberg’s remedy. ????
I’m with you all the way on judiciously administered rum/whiskey for frightening germs away. If I got a cold when I was little, Mum also used to give me a tiny serve of whiskey or brandy with hot water,,lemon and honey, and I’m waiting for 10.00 a.m. to avail myself of this infallible remedy. Goodness knows why, but it feels altogether too decadent to drink school before mid morning, mthoughthough what conceivable difference 45 minutes should make, I just have no idea.
Bummer on the attack of the creeping crud, and your poor kitty’s injury. Hopefully, she doesn’t need to see the vet. Koenigberg’s cold remedy sounds wonderful!
Oh no! Hope you feel better soon!
I’m in Desarmant today, like I needed another lilac, but this is so so pretty…
You smell lovely. That is gorgeous.
SOTD this morning was Agonist’s Solaris. Nice and bright, but a little sweeter than I felt like today. Feeling a little tropical and think I will replace with Carnal Flower after lunch.
Dstsauve, please email me when you get a chance!
SOTD – Miyako. I can confidently say I was the best smelling person in my Costco today :). This fragrance is so amazing – and I understand all the hype now.
SOTD = trying to use up a sample of Commodity’s Moss. Still have some, but it worked well for the unsettled weather.
I tried a little bit and liked it, but I don’t really understand their concept.
Maybe it’s trying to be like Jo Malone, layerable single notes? Not sure. I’ve only tried Moss, so I don’t know if there is a cohesive thread with all the scents.
It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone! Oh my gosh, Tom Jones! SOTD: Mysore sandalwood oil. Had a very shanti day, visiting a housecall client and then walking home, saw some blue herons on the river and a couple of Canada geese leading their gaggle of 10 fuzzy goslings all in a row swimming behind. And another adult leading a gaggle of 7 from a younger batch. So cute!
Those geese and goslings are unbearably cute, aren’t they. I’ve been going for a daily visit since I saw a few families by the water, I could watch them all day is their fuzzy glory.
I was trying to figure out how that fluffy furry stuff on goslings becomes actual feathers. And their little wings are so cute.
Heron are quite elegant and gawky looking at the same time. We once had a heron perched on our windowsill in a former Brooklyn apartment (on Huron Street) we called it The Heron on Huron 🙂 It was pretty bizarre to see that here.
That’s quite a story. How wonderful that one came right to your window! I find the blue herons quite mystical in a way. It’s fun to watch them when they catch and swallow fish whole. I guess they will be here now for the summer. Sometimes there are six or seven of them just hanging out in the river shallows.
Heavy dose of Narciso today. Home alone so spraying with abandon!
Late to the party! I did a Fake It day today!
SOTD = Le Couvent des Minimes Eau de Missions + Cuir Beluga
I layered Cuir Beluga (2 spritzes) over Eau de Missions (4 spritzes)
Eau de Missions is a close cousin of Spiritueuse Double Vanille. SDV has more depth and is boozier than Eau de Missions. Cuir Beluga added elegance to Eau de Missions and smoothed out some rough edges. It’s a good thing I didn’t do a full on SDV wearing today because I unexpectedly had to use the elevator 4 times today (normally none as I work on a low enough floor to be able to take the stairs without much effort). I also had an unexpected closed doors meeting with someone and smelling like booze would not have been good!
I can see how Eau de Booze, though delicious, might not be office-appropriate. ???? …I think there may have been a problem with my mobile mail, so let me know if the email I sent yesterday didn’t show up and I’ll retry from my desktop.
I got it!
In what world is Cuir de Beluga faking it?!?! Between this and your “I’ll fake it with the Chanel Exclusifs,” I am afraid I will quite vehemently disagree with your opinion of what faking it means.
We don’t all agree about what we like or how we interprete these challenges. That is what makes it fun and interesting!
Jeez…interpret
My interpretation is on the Wednesday SOTD comment, late again! It would be a hoot if I used more expensive perfumes to achieve the scent of a cheapie perfume 😉
Too busy to participate today. SOTD was De Profundis which I topped off with Silences when I came home this evening. Have a nice night NSTers.
(See my comment above to hajusuuri.) If my email (2x) yesterday didn’t make it to you, just let me know…
It did not coming through. Try again…
Or, if you prefer, provide your email so I can try to contact you? Have a nice day Creosote! 🙂
