Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to June. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm trying out Grace by Grace Coddington. So far, so good, but I really just put it on.
Reminder: 6/3 will be Leap of Faith Friday — wear a scent you’ve never worn before with bonus points for a scent you haven’t read about and don’t know the notes for. Suggested by Eleebelle.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: images is Patterned Bunny Brooch ("A sweet bunny has been printed with pretty patterns and cut from thin wood, before being given a Swarovski crystal eye and varnished for protection.") by Matin Lapin, $8.38 each at Not On The High Street.
Forgot about the rabbit today, even though I’ve had one hopping around the yard all spring, nibbling away at everything–it’s huge now.
Someone mentioned it over the weekend, so I’ve hauled out Liu–very pretty.
We have multiple rabbits hopping around the yard, but we now also have a family of foxes living out back. So.
Nothing as good as a group of foxes to control pesky ground animals! Although I do like the bucolic appearance of some wild rabbits munching away on clover. But I get annoyed when my strawberries get nibbled away…. We also have sharp shinned hawks that take care of our small animals and keep them out of the garden and the house. I’d rather have foxes around than raccoons.
Mean of me, but I wish the foxes would eat all the groundhogs. For whatever reason, very rare to see a raccoon around here.
How lovely!
Did you know that foxes make excellent pets? https://imgur.com/Fs2wF3r I plan to get a pet fox one day. It must be nice to have a family of pest-controlling pets in the backyard.
No5 EDC layered with A la Nuit.
It’s a raunchy, hairy jasmine. 😀
Yeah, foxes love No5 layered with A la Nuit.
*bangs head on desk*
I can believe it. These foxes are very tame & used to humans — they don’t even run away when we’re outside. They eat a lot of the neighbor’s cat food.
We saw a red fox trotting through the pasture behind the house last week. Those are rare around here; there are plenty of gray ones. But also plenty of rabbits. 🙂
Eau du Sud (Annick Goutal) 🙂
Yum, love that one.
Gorgeous! Nothing says “summer” like Eau de Sud. One of my fav Goutals, which is saying a lot!
I love this! perfect for warm days, pure summer. Have to track a bottle of this!
Apologize in advance for typos- there’s a cat on the keyboard!
SOTD is Hermes Vanille Galante. I really adore its sweet lily. Zelda’s review: 2 sniffs, but no licks.
What scents earn Zelda’s coveted “many licks” review?
Only two so far: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille and CBIHP Burning Leaves. I can see how the latter would appeal to a carnivore!
This is adorable!
At the nearby tiger/wild cat rescue place, they say they make scented toys (herbs and smelly things inside of cardboard tubes) to create a stimulating environment and keep the animals from getting bored. My house cat, however, only seems interested in sniffing cat nip. : )
I really liked that one but my hubby recoiled in horror when he sniffed my wrist and claimed it smells like sewage. 🙁
hee, hee, Vanille Galante = sewage, that makes me smile.
I wore it one evening when going out to dinner. As we exited an elevator, a gentleman in our party said, “Someone smells drunk.” He never pinned it on me, though.
I love VG no matter what anyone else smells, says, or thinks. 🙂
In the spirit of the “Leap of Faith” project I am testing out Jacomo de Jacomo from a mysterious mini I found rattling around in my collection. Smells green/herbal with a base of smokey leather, probably marketed to men (I’ll look it up later – I’m probably way off). Its OK, although leather is a difficult note for me and this one is a bit harsh.
I am having fun too with the leap of faith this week
Doing the layering thing this morning – Epic body lotion underneath Epic Eau de Parfum. AND I seem to be able to smell a bit better after having purchased Flonase last night. Booyah! Feelin good.
Hope you’re all well.
Also, because I know you’re all bookish types – I haven’t read any Mary Karr yet, but I listened to several interviews this weekend while cleaning my house and I’m developing a serious author crush. She a favorite of anyone here?
Thinking of making the Liars’ Club my next book after I finish Orwell’s essays.
Liar’s Club is great as is The Art of Memoir. (Plus have you read Orwell’s Down and Out??)
I’m glad your nose is feeling better!
Thank you dear Ann!
Oh yes, I love Mary Karr’s work!
I read a book of her poems a few years ago, and thought they were very good.
You smell epic!
Well, it sounded wittier in my head. But you smell great regardless.
Wearing perfume #100 which is Gardenia Batik from Soivohle. Bought a travel spray blind and it’s a lovely waxy/creamy spring floral.
I salute your courage! A blind buy for #100–that’s gutsy.
I like gardenias and Soivohle is the most represented house in my collection, so I wasn’t too worried 🙂
Congrats on #100. Here’s to the next 100!
Hi everyone! Today I’m wearing “Italian Bergamot” from the Ermenegildo Zegna Essenze collection. It’s a simple but pleasantly refreshing scent.
Summer requires an arsenal of refreshing scents! They definitely make the “dog days” more enjoyable.
Smelling the dry down of Dia Woman. I am wondering if I should continue on wearing Dia for today or choose Epic or Memoir. It will be in the 80’s but I really don’t care, it’s an Amouage Day for me.
After all they’re based in the desert, so I think they should work well into the 100s.
I think all the Amouages I’ve tried work in the heat. Super high humidity might rule out Memoir for me, but Epic is very versatile (though it does seem to fade faster on a sultry day).
Heeley Bubblegum Chic. Nice, sweet tuberose. Similar to PG Tubereuse Couture and il Profumo Eclair de Tubereuse.
Friday’s project sounds fun!
Haven’t managed to test that one yet, though I tried and liked the other two. At this point it seems a bit redundant. 🙂
Parfums de Nicolaï New York. I think it’s probably my favourite of the house.
Your praise next to Turin’s makes NY sound like something absolutely to be smelled. Do you mean the new version, or the previous one?
(By the way, I’ll be sending your samples today, myself, since my foot is much better.)
Mine was bought in 2008-2009. The new New York Intense is still good, but not as good as the version I own.
Once my head is clear of all these exams I’ll send you some New York, it’s a really stunning scent, which surprisingly doesn’t get mentioned much. There isn’t even a review on most blogs.
I love that one, too! Wish I could find the old version.
I’ll let you know when they arrive. I’m very curious about them. Glad to hear you are mending well, feet can be stubborn. 😉
Thank you, Austenfan.
Just arrived from the post office. Your samples will arrive in 7 to 15 days. Going out is so good. To see the people on the streets, lol.
I had thought of something perfect to wear last night but now it escapes me. I might just wear Nicolai’s l’Eau Chic today since it’s going to be a hot one.
I wore Bulgari Black last night, which I blind bought just to have a reference if it did one day disappear. It’s lovely but much more soft spoken than I’d imagined.
L’Eau Chic is one of my favorite Nicolai’s.
It’s on of three that I’ve tried and it is hands down my favorite.
Which other Nicolaïs have you tried?
Odalisque and… the leathey masculine. I think it starts with a B? Baladin? I thoroughly enjoyed that one but Odalisque smelled like dead flower water on my skin.
I wish I could try more but I’m not in sampling mode right now and there isn’t a store with them in Houston.
Black is wonderful! The vanilla in it makes it feel quite comforting and the bottle is wonderful. Sad they discontinued it 🙁
It is a shame, not only because of how lovely it is but how long they’ve kept it around. And with no flankers!
I’m glad I have it as reference but for mt rubber neefs, I actually prefer the crazy explosion of CdG’s Black. Of course it’s not available at discounters, sadly.
For some reason, I like the sound of mt rubber neefs, which my brain translated into mount rubber neefs. 😀
Oh God, how embarrassing. “My rubber needs.”
Aw, I thought it was adorable! There’s not a one of us who doesn’t make typos or check what auto-correct spits out.
Imaginary Authors “The Cobra and the Canary” is also pretty good, though I still prefer Bulgari Black. Never tried CdG (try and stay away since they are out of my price range), but now I’m curious!
CdG Black is remarkably affordable for $110 for 100ml. But it is intense. I think I’d drain a bottle though.
Some people may be horrified – 5 sprays of Bvlgari Black is just right. To be fair, it is 5 sprays from a 10 mL atomizer (have to decant since the hockey puck is unwieldy).
Another unknown sample today: Dame Dark Horse (from pixel, my introduction to all things Dame). I smelled nothing at all for the first few minutes, so I gave myself about five hearty sprays. About five minutes later, my skin burst into a festival of spicy vanilla. “It’s June,” you say; “your leap of faith let you down on this one.” But you are wrong! Because today’s high is a paltry 61 °F and it’s rainy and miserable! So in fact cinnamon-clove-vanilla is perfect for this crappy weather. My lab building turns off the heat at the end of April, which would make sense in a normal world for the south of France, but it appears that this year, we need to turn on our space heater in June. Grumble.
Sorry about the weather (it’s very similar here), but the perfume sounds lovely.
I have several travel sizes from Dame, he really is just one of the nicest (local!) perfumers and is very generous sending samples with your purchases, regardless of how much money you spend.
Dark Horse and BFMV didn’t really work for me, might have to clean out the closet and give away the samples in a freebie meet. But I do very much enjoy Mandarin, Neroli & Cedar, as well as Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli. He makes some great, light scents to wear in the summer heat.
Sorry about your weather, but glad you like Dark Horse!
Agreed…considering Jeffrey Dame is a one man show he is extraordinarily generous and creates really pleasant and wearable fragrances….. which is why he repeatedly gets my business 🙂
I couldn’t agree more! Jeffrey is charming and so generous!
Oooh, I adore them both! I’ll keep my eyes open in case you do decide to get rid of them at the freebie meet 🙂 Yeah, I am looking forward to giving him my business when I use up the samples. He seems like a great person to do business with. I just wish the scents lasted longer on me!
I love Dark Horse! I am a spice lover and recently bought a bottle. If you like spice, you should try Akkad.
I LOVE Akkad! Someone sent me a sample in the last swap meet and I absolutely adore it. It would be higher on my to-buy list if it were cheaper!
I am a little intimidated by the leap of faith Friday…. I’m going to have to poke around in my box of untested samples…. SOTD is soft and pretty Esprit d’Oscar. And happy day! Both of my Nelly Moser clematis have finally opened their first blossoms.
I googled to determine what those are – preeeeetty.
I too am not sure what to do for Friday. I don’t like tuberose, so maybe that? What are you thinking?
I don’t know. Most of what I have that I’ve never smelled are likely to be fragrances I won’t care for. So there’s the leap of faith, right? I hope there is something good hiding in my box….. Fingers crossed. Whatever it may be, I’m likely to just put some on the back of my hand in case I need to scrub!!! 😉
I’ll be using the same system as you. Considering I tend to coordinate my b&b products with my SOTD, as well as what I’ wearing, what I’m doing, what the weather is like, etc., blindly choosing a fragrance I know nothing about requires a gigantic leap of faith on my part. I have some Luckyscent samples that were free with an order, so I’ll just reach into the bag and grab one and hope for the best . . .
Clematis are so pretty. We have one growing in our yard but I don’t know the variety. It has purple bell-shaped flowers with narrow petals. It’s been blossoming since the beginning of May!
I’ve come to love clematis because they are so tough and showy and you don’t have to fuss over them like roses. In my heart I’d have a massive rose and perennial garden, but my climate is bad for roses. So I’ve transitioned to clematis and peony to get my show on. Purple bell shaped sounds lovely! Do yours bloom all summer or just spring/fall?
I have no idea yet. They came with the apt so we’re just starting to see what’s popping up. There was a lot of dry, dead vine all over the gate, so I wonder if those were clematis as well. The roses seem to be doing well so far, though.
Probably – I don’t cut my clematis back – winter weather does that for me. But if it is clematis, then you’d likely see shoots along the stem or at the base by now.
Love clematis. I have a Nelly Moser that The CEO sort of “weeded” out by mistake* a few years ago, and it is just now coming back. (No blooms yet.) There’s a light blue-purple one with small blooms that I can’t remember the name of, and my favorite, the Henryi – big white ones with a pale pink stripe down each petal. Once they’ve gone to seed they look like tiny Dr. Seuss flowers. The Henryi got “weeded” also a few years ago, and this is its second summer back to life.
*This was the year that he decided to “weed” the front garden not by pulling plants by hand, but by using the weedwhacker on anything he didn’t recognize. I was out of the house on some errand and came home to the plant carnage…
Oh no! I hate those weeding expeditions! I have come home to similar carnage many times.
I currently have the opposite problem. My next-door neighbors/friends are into birds, and they have feeders loaded with premium organic thistle seeds which have infiltrated the lawn, landscaped beds and ground cover in my yard. In addition, they have decided to let their property go “natural” so every ding-dong weed goes to seed and floats over here. They get very little sun in their yard because it is crammed with trees and saplings, and the soil is compacted with roots, so the thistles don’t grow over there. Grrr …
Oh god – while I’m not a proponent of scorched earth type of weeding – the truly invasive weeds that are impossible to remove (THISTLE!) are just the worst. People need to be more considerate about that. I’ve had to remove thistle and jerusalem artichoke, which are also impossible to truly get out. I am really, really feeling for you right now.
Thanks, AnnS.
Thistles are the WORST. And we have a lot of them. 🙁
Yeah, our wet Virginia spring seems to have been ideal for them. Sorry you’re dealing with them too. 🙁
Mals – I am laughing and crying for you at the same time. 😉 Accidental weeding. I think that clematis gets this a lot b/c of it’s weird appearance when it starts. My brother in law sprayed a clematis at my sisters house and she was heartbroken b/c it’s gone forever. At least if it’s hand pulled or whacked there’s a chance some root material is still there… but Nelly Moser is nearly indestructible. I had one a few years ago that got frozen in a block of ice in a planter when I didn’t have time to remove it or store the planter correctly for winter. It was in a block of ice for 6 months! And it came back to life and is blooming like a champ ever since I got it in the ground. And the seeds are very cool….
I have hopes that the Nelly will recover, since the Henryi eventually resuscitated itself.
I’m in Eau de Merveilles and chugging along at report work…. It seems my usual one week’s worth of report work has now turned into two because I was given even more to do.
You must do an excellent job of getting the monthly reports done. The more you do, the more they give you to do. Especially when you’re good.
I have to get my work done before the others, so I tend to be “done” with them by the time they are starting – usually. (Last month I got screwed and everyone was on my back because I started at the same time they did.) So if one of the specialists has extra work or is just bogged down with stuff, then I’m usually the go-to person to throw extra stuff onto. I don’t mind it, but after the hell that was last week… I kinda wish they’d leave me be this time…
SOTD SL Fumerie Turque
The bottle is getting lower and lower
Sigh
You smell great!!
Atelier Rendezvous. Atelier seemed like a safe house to wear an unsniffed scent from to a meeting, and of course, I needed one that didn’t identify any notes in its name.
I guess I’d ignored this one, knowing it was a floral, but it turns out that it’s very nice! I smell leather, and while I can’t identify any of the specific flowers (I think there’s iris), it’s sweet and happy.
I like Rendezvous! Jeez, where on earth is my decant …
I love both Bottega Veneta and Daim Blond, so I feel like this is one I need to try. I love leather, and though florals aren’t always my thing, I love me some osmanthus.
I’m not much into majorly floral scents either (though I make exceptions for rose). This is pretty, though, and definitely worth a shot. I also had excellent luck yesterday with Olfactive Studio Ombre Indigo…which doesn’t sound like it based on the notes, but read predominantly of leather all day to my nose.
I’m the same re: florals – rose is in its own category for me for some reason. I’m making a note to try Ombre Indigo as well – thanks Eleebelle!
Rendezvous is lovely!
It’s gone from 50 degrees to 90 in the span of not many days, here, and all that sounds good are perfumes that smell like they have a good electrolyte content, so Chanel 19 it is. I don’t think I quite “got” this one the first time around, but now I love it. Does anyone happen to know the history of reformulations on this one? I think my sample is 2 or 3 years old, and I’m wondering if this is still the current iteration. I’ve heard cross things about Chanel’s reformulations.
I would not worry so much about Chanel’s reformulation; they may dilute it, but not enough to jeopardise the character of No.19! The most affected part is probably the muguet accord in there. The EdT smells great, The EdP is still sharp, but not as loud as five years ago. The parfum as always is stunning 🙂
Cute bunny pins. And 8 bucks!
SOTD Peche Cardinale (thanks Petunia!). Yum.
That’s a wonderful scent! Ah, I re-sniffed Peche Cardinale only yesterday. And I didn’t like it at first. Didn’t test it again for months, but suddenly, I found it was really lovely.
I find that it’s better in warmer weather and lightly applied.
It’s working nicely in the heat today and I did apply lightly which I usually do for work. The first time I tried it, I spritzed more heavily and it’s one of those that seems to grow.
You’re welcome Elisa. It must be a coincidence that I’m wearing vinty Cristalle EDP (Thanks Elisa!). It’s so beautiful.
????
Grey vetiver today, OOTD work appropriate LBD with a sparkly belt buckle (paired with dark tights given the UK weather today).
Am intrigued to see what unworn samples I find for Friday when I have a look.
I need to find something too — might be hard.
Thierry Mugler Mirroir des Envies (sp?). It started very nice, but, uncharacteristically of TM, or at least of what I know from his work, all but disappeared on me about 45 min later -??? Is my nose broken today?
That is unusual for a Mugler! But have not tried that one.
Sort of following the brief today. I’m wearing Cologne Indelebile. Haven’t worn it before but I have smelled it. Also: Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black dry shampoo. It’s quite strong so definitely counts for half of my fragrance. I have a rollerball of Black with me so when my cologne is gone I’ll match the dry shampoo completely.
I LOVE Nirvana Black but when I smelled the dry shampoo at the store once, it smelled a bit off, but maybe it was just that container? Does yours smell as it should?
I’m sorta curious about this too–I tried it just on the back of my hand and couldn’t really get a good handle on it.
FWIW, I think the Nirvana Black solid is dreamy. A bit creamier and lightly sweeter than the original, to my nose.
And now I need to try it. The problem with summer is that there is less opportunity for Nirvana Black-wearing.
It’s true, it’s not a scent for hot muggy days!
Yeah, you definitely need to try the dry shampoo in your hair in order to tell if you’ll like it or not.
Ok next time I’ll be bolder–I don’t know why I felt embarrassed about spraying my hair! 🙂
I think it’s a pretty good match for the perfume–especially if you give it a couple minutes to settle in. I’m smelling my hair now and comparing to my wrist which I just put some Black on and I will say I think the dry shampoo has more of the feeling of the dry down of the scent. It’s a bit sharper and darker than the opening I’m getting from the straight perfume. But to me it is identifiable as being Nirvana Black even if I didn’t know what it was supposed to be–if that means anything. And if it helps, my husband this morning asked what I was wearing because it smelled so good–and I hadn’t put anything on, just the dry shampoo. 😀 So maybe give it another shot? When you tried it in the store did you put it in your hair or just spray in the air? Because when you first spray it it is definitely a little chemical-y (I think because of the added dry shampoo element, but this subsides pretty quickly.)
I think I just smelled the top of the cannister, and yes, it smelled chemical-y, but now I think I’ll go back to try again. That scent really is delicious, and it doesn’t surprise me at all that your husband loved it.
Third try of Bel Respiro today, which I *should* like but don’t. There’s something in it that doesn’t work for me, almost like a bitter cucumbery Johnson’s Baby Shampoo.
Ha! I went through a bottle of that and Never repurchased, there is something about it that is strange. Oh well.. Money saved for something else
Yep, money saved!
That doesn’t sound appealing. I’ve never tried it on skin, only on those ceramic sticks they have at the counter. I don’t quite remember my reaction to it.
I think it’s pretty well-received, but it just doesn’t work for me.
I like it, but when I chatting with the Chanel SA recently, she also said it seems sharp to her.
I usually like sharp, so I’m baffled by my reaction. Fortunately, I have a ton of green scents to choose from.
It is very green, right?
Yes, it’s supposed to be very green, Nick. That’s why I thought I would like it, as I usually adore very green scents even if they’re witchy (shrill and bitter and sharp-toothed).
I remember vaguely that it is green, but not the galbanum green. Maybe that is why you find it sharp and shrill.
SOTD is Cristalle EDP – needed something to cut through the mugginess here today. Supposed to be 98 degrees this Saturday – gah.
You smell fabulous!
Hey Twin.
Mmm …
Another twin here (waves)
Rahat Loukhoum. I’m on the last days of a two months medical leave because I broke a foot and sprang the ankle, so I’m indulging in this deliciously pink, bubble gummy perfume I would not normally wear for work. Or maybe I should. It feels great on a cold rainy day, and remains juicy and bright for a long time.
which one? SL?
Hope you are recovered
I hope that means you’re almost healed!
Love SL Rahat, the opening cherry cough syrup accord repels my husband, but makes me so happy.
Glad you’re feeling better!
I kind of half cheated to participate today, in Elixir des Merveilles. I havent worn it before but I presumed (rightly) that it was just the Eau with a sweeter heft. Nice, but Ive concluded that on cold but sunny days I prefer fresher scents.
SOTD: Baiser Vole Lys Rose.
Haven’t tried this one out before. Lily has always been a huge challenge. The greenness and pollen smells hit me pretty hard. This one is much easier to carry but I gotta say, although I can’t wear it much, the original (and that parfum version!) is much prettier 😛
I adore lily on other people, in the garden, or as an ambient scent. On myself, however, it requires a very specific craving. The Ineke one is the only exception I can think of. I find Gilded Lily very easy.
My SOTD is Marc Jacobs Honey , a Christmas gift from my son. He’s getting married a week from this Saturday, and he’s been on my mind a lot this morning. My first born child getting married–living in his own home–where did the time go, are the thoughts going through my mind right now.
How sweet of your boy!
I imagine it must be quite a bittersweet moment, pride and happiness mixed with a hint of sadness. I hope the honey brings a smile to your face.
Oh, you grew him all up! Congrats.
Part of my leap of faith, sampling these Lurk perfume oils, no names just letters and numbers and I have no idea about any of the scents. Today I put a few on, not sure how to apply perfume oil. Can’t smell anything now and it’s been about 4 hours.
So happy it’s June 1st, 17 more days of work until I am home for 2 years with my babies
Oh and tea today is a homemade chai
Yay for the opportunity to be home to raise your babies! So happy for you and for them.
Me too
The little meatball is rolling over and yesterday my toddler took her first fall in the playground and is all banged up ????
So happy for you! Meatball is making some serious progress ????
So happy for you! Such a special 2 years it will be.
It will be, and there will always be work to go back to when the time comes..
I’m wearing 31RC because despite my best efforts, my decant is evaporating at an alarming rate. I’m actually almost glad of this because I am forced to wear it and not hoard, but I like it enough that I will have to consider another decant when it’s gone.
I’m feeling very sleep deprived and hoping the Chanel backbone comes through the pretty floral flounces, otherwise I may have to resort to No. 5 later. The tomcat thugs were here at approximately 12:40, 2:00, 2:35, 3:55, and 8:30 (I was trying to sleep in). I’m afraid something drastic will have to be done 🙁
I love 31 RC
Speaking of hoarding, I think I have been doing that with my samples as of late 😀 It feels really good when you crave to smell the scent, but are not actually dying to get a whole bottle.
I had to pitch a bunch of stuff this weekend.. very sad. Need.To.Use.
vs. buying more!
You smell great! Use up that 31RC–it’s too fabulous to die an evaporative death! ????
I’ve reapplied four times 😀 On top of the now four tomcats and huge raccoon, we have acquired a pair of large dogs who have us besieged inside the fenced yard. They are not friendly, and have already brought down a fawn and, I think, a rabbit.
Holy moly! (I’m freaked out by the large unfriendly dogs 2 states away!) Can you call Animal Control or something?
Heh. Animal control around here is a rifle so we are hoping that someone finds their owners. Honestly, the animal control facility for the county is four metal cages on an old cracked slab with a tarp over the top. It’s also 35 miles away and they won’t come this far. The doggies have chased some deer and are no longer nearby, but I can still hear some baying in the distance. Maybe someone can catch them before they get in trouble but we are going to have to keep an extra close eye on our cats and carry a shotgun (for scaring them, hopefully) when we go out.
I’m in Mitsouko edp today. Packing to go home to see my parents, and can’t decide which perfume to take with me. I’m only going to three days so it’s not a life-or-death decision, but still. Something I haven’t tried, so it’s there for Friday? Something tried and tested and comfy? Maybe I’ll pick something up over there! Something unsniffed and – plunge into it. Yup, sorted.
A propos, where is this summer that I keep hearing about? London is still in autumn mode. Got totally soaked on the way from work yesterday.
Three days?! I would need at least a dozen samples and decants just in case… I mean, how do you know what you’ll be in the mood for tomorrow? 😉
You smell fantastic! If you don’t mind my asking, what area of London are you in? I lived in Bloomsbury for a year about 10 years ago, and I miss that city desperately–crappy weather and all. Here’s hoping summer will find you soon!
It’s summer here this week, finally! Last weekend I rotated my perfumes — put all the ambers and incenses in the basement, brought up the citruses and florals. Which means it’ll probably get cold again in a week, but I deny that possibility.
SOTD is Dame Perfumery Passionfruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver. I’m pretending I’m back to being on vacation in Hawaii, where I wore this scent nearly every day. In reality, I’m headed into the office in my light summer clothes, where I will undoubtedly freeze in the arctic A/C….
Love that one 🙂
I just switched out my “spring” for my “summer” rotation!
Yep, A/C at crazy temps. I’m wrapped in a blanket at my desk. Hate it.
Boy de Chanel in EdP
Nice fresh coumarin top that recalls the current Fougère Royale/Jicky EdT. Lavender creamy… geranium sharpness, sweet rose, musk and vanilla that recalls Jersey, but sweet powdery like No.19 Poudré. Then, clear mossy roughness like the current Antaeus. Quite long-lasting and soft sillage. Hmm… not sure what to make of it. At times, it gives off that masculine fresh aromatic top, geranium, and old barbershop. Other times, it is rosy, sweet-musky powdery. Need a more generous dose!
Intrigued. I wonder if the Brussels Chanel boutique has it already…
Try it and let us know!
I am not sure what to make of it, really. I like the different parts so far, but how do they fit as a whole is a bit baffling and mysterious like a chypre. Maybe because this is a play of fougère. My Estonian apartment mate said that she would imagine this on women because men may not like the clean soap lavender aspect of this.
SOTD: Soivohle Orris Ochre, a mellowing scent for a busy day. Just have to get through to Friday and I will be what my husband calls a “vacation baby”. ????
What does that mean – vacation baby? Is Orris Ochre still available or had it been discontinued?
a) I’m his baby and I’ll be on vacation : )
b) I believe it’s discontinued. : (
Yesterday I began testing Pekji samples, starting with Ruh. The reported combination of rose, coffee and cardamom smelled strangely camphoraceous to me. It’s unusual and I’ll try it again.
Today it’s Holy Shit, which of course I want just for the name. 😀 To me it’s basically a leather, not at all sweet, but rather warm and dry, with almost a creosote and sage brush feel about it. Definitely liking it so far.
I hope this counts toward the poll because although I had skimmed over the notes of all the Pekji offerings, I had forgotten what Holy Shit was supposed to be about by the time it arrived.
Holy Shit. Best. Name. Ever. ????
I want it too!
I think you’re well within the rules. I have usually seen a notes list for things I try but always have to look them up again to verify.
LOL.
Mmmm. You smell great. What are you wearing?
Holy Shit!
What? I asked you what perfume are you wearing!
I said Holy Shit!
What do you mean holy shit?
Holy Shit! That’s the name of the perfume – Holy Shit!
Geez, you are pulling me leg. Well, holy shit back at you.

“…over-honeyed party spritz that is Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb” 🙂 I concur.
Very cool how the author got the thoughts of the various perfumers. Thank you for sharing!
Leap of Faith day 3: Jovoy Private Label, which I ADORE: earthy-peaty forest with pine needles, patchouli, and vetiver. If only it weren’t so forbiddingly expensive.
That sounds nice! But if it is so $$$ maybe I’ll skip it.
Unknown Pleasure #3 is Memo’s “Quartier Latin”. The official notes are cedar, amber, sandalwood and tonka bean, but on me it’s like a strange creamy butterscotch-vanilla combination. Aa I’ve re-applied during the day I get more of a wood note. It’s not unpleasant, but it’s also not terrifically interesting and not very long-lasting.
Have you tried anything else from Memo? I just caught something about their new release, Marfa, and it’s the first one I’m actually curious enough to try, but I am completely ignorant of the line.
Only “Irish Leather” so far, which I didn’t much like but it has turned out that leather is a problematic note for me. I have a bunch of samples at home, but yet to test them so no useful info I’m afraid.
I, meanwhile, am enjoying your Irish Leather sample. I also recently got a sample of African Leather, which I like even more! I gave my boyfriend the Penhaligon’s Face and Beard Scrub, and he loved it. Thinking of getting him a FB of that–certainly cheaper than perfume, and he’ll enjoy it literally infinitely more, too.
I totally thought those bunnies were cookies …
After a week of being really sick, then reacting to the antibiotics and having to get different ones I finally feel normal! I’ll keep it easy with Eau de Marveilles.
So glad you’re better!
I’m continuing with my Regime des Fleurs samples as I want to test them anyway and it fits the theme, too. Wearing Turquoise today: it’s nice and interesting. They call it both ‘a honeyed grass’ and ‘a pastel nectar’ on the web site and it starts out as the first (interesting) and turns into the second (nice).
I wore Timelapse yesterday, their edible perfume. I was ready to dismiss it as a gimmick, but I liked the scent a lot – mostly because there was this fruity magnolia note. Full disclosure: yes, I licked my wrist and there was absolutely no unpleasant taste (you know, the one you get when you put your wrist too close to your mouth when sniffing yourself. What? It’s only me?)
Turquoise sounds nice. I’m not sure I get the rationale behind them making an edible perfume, except for the novelty factor. I’m boringly practical. But, yes, I think many of us are closeted or openly weird 😉
Heh, the edible perfume just reminds me of when girls used to wear vanilla extract in middle school. I’m with you Elisa P, not sure I get the point?
Glad to get some more info on RdF though, think I’ll wait on LuckyScent to restock and try a couple.
I’ve liked everything I’ve tried so far. I think the complaints I have stem mostly from the fact that these are naturals and are therefore quieter than my usual fare, especially when dabbed.
I think the idea is that you can use it in food and drinks – something I am actually the target market for, as I like that sort of thing (not necessarily for this price, though ????). But I assumed it would make the scent itself kind of basic, which wasn’t really the case.
Hey have you tried Dove Grey yet? I have a full bottle of that and love it. I think when sprayed with abandon it lasts much longer.
I have a full bottle of Nymphaea Caerulea, which is extrait in a dabber bottle, so I can’t “spray with abandon”, but I do smear with abandon and it is strong enough to satisfy me and long lasting. I want a bottle of Dove Grey (I love Iris), but haven’t got around to it yet. A couple from their second flight sound really good too. Do you have any of those Annikky?
I’m wearing Chanel Boy today. I like it a lot and it is another scent that is office-friendly.
Twin! What do you smell in there? I am curious. The dominant thing is this creamy lavender powdery sweet musky part — to my nose.
Nick, I agree…I get mostly lavender, powder and musk as well.
No leaps for me today. Instead, I’m sticking a proven and enduring love of mine- Amouage Fate Woman. Always Just Right.
Finally got T-Rex to stick her head underwater today! She’s making great progress and I really want her to feel comfortable in the water before we work on falling off a SUP or Kayak. When we flip, which is inevitable, I don’t want to try to deal with a panicky dog while trying to myself back on board. She is just adorable in her life vest, although I guess I’m a bit biased. I think the aforementioned Meatball may take first place in the cuteness category ????
Your dog to swim commentary is making me smile. I have this picture in my head of you wet and flipped over…. very funny.
It’s a comedy of errors! When I took my kayak lesson, the instructor made fall out and flip my kayak, then told me I had 30 seconds to flip it upright and hoist myself back in. Ah, no. It took me 4 tries to flip it and 3 more to haul myself in. Technically, in cold water, I would already be dead. Your talking to a ghost right now ????
You’re, even!
We are having more rain here in East Texas, which we don’t need. I am wearing Mad Madame from my Juliette Has a Gun discovery kit. I chose for the name but I really like the fragrance.
“Rain, rain, go away!” I’m doing the anti-rain dance right now. Hope it stops sooner rather than later.
Don’t you wish you could just pause the rain? I know we will need it later this year, but you East Texas folk are really getting hammered. I feel terrible for the poor cattle.
Mad Madame is my favourite from the discovery set. I really love it.
Hot hot hot, i’m burning up. Think I need to get myself a fan this summer, there is absolutely no air circulating in my little student-apartment.
Maison Francis Kurkdjian OUD for today. Maybe something Black Orchid-ish for the evening later. I smell barbecue in the air.. summer appeared.
Wearing Grace Coddington as well..my new Summer fave rose scent 🙂
I’m planning to test that further. It seemed like it might be an easy summer choice. Plus I want the cat bottle! 😉
I really like that bottle!
Twisted Lily is out of the 50 mLs the last time I checked (last night I think).
Not to put a damper on things… but I will —- Grace devolved into feminine hygiene product when it dried down further. I’m glad it works for some people.
Eek. Thanks for the warning…
Hey twin!
ELdO Fils de dieu.
Happy June, everyone!
My favorite ELdO!
Wearing Oriental Express today…
I haven’t tried any of the newer Les Exceptions but the original five are all so well done. Not sure if I will pursue any full bottles when my samples run out but good show from Mugler.
I only tried Cuir Impertinent and really like it. However, the price is kind of high, at least full price, have not seen it at any discount
Trying Ormonde Woman today. When I first put it on, it seemed very similar to Nirvana Black on me, only more intense. I like it, just not what I was looking for today. I think I got it mixed up in my head with Osmanthus (not that they’re anything alike, except they both start with “o” 😛
I have Woman and have been wanting NB, but are they so similar I shouldn’t bother?
I would call NB “Woman lite”. I wouldn’t bother if I already had a bottle of Woman, and I find it to be more of a cold weather scent on me, so I would wait.
SOTD for me is Seville A L’Aube. I’ve really missed wearing this one..
We have a health fair today at work and there’s a woman with all kinds of scrubs and body butters, plan to check these out later today along with a free hand scrub. The sandalwood option caught my eye!
You smell fantastic!
I’m wearing Dior Homme today. Not sure it was the best choice for the day because every once in a while I get a whiff of it and it seems to sweet but other times it’s fine. Headed out to meet my realtor and see a new place (in the same complex as the one I lost out on yesterday).
*too sweet .. geez.
Good luck, sweetgrass!
Good luck and keep us posted! Can’t wait for the day you post you have found and bought yourself a home that fits all your needs and dreams!
Thanks! I’ll be pretty happy when that day comes too! The place I saw today is gorgeous and basically perfect for me. However… I was all set to put in an offer and saw in the disclosure that it has flooded recently (though obviously been renovated since). I’m going to try and get a claim history report from my insurance broker and decide if it’s too risky to go through with the offer.
Yikes, that was a good catch on your part. Hopefully it was an isolated incident. Good luck ????
I had my son’s IEP today. He is transitioning into high school in the fall, and I am trying to get him a balance of services and some independence. I am a nervous wreck about it all. It’s a dreary day here and expecting storms. sotd Black Opium.
I’m not sure what an IEP is, but I get the gist. And I’m sure the dreary weather isn’t helping your emotional state. Hope all goes well for you and your son, lillyjo!
Thank you. I’m sure I will feel a little more capable once the sun is shining again.
Good luck with the HS admin; I hear it’s often just a lottery of whether you’ll get people you can work with or not. Best wishes to your son – high school is a big new world!
Thank you. We have been blessed with some wonderful people in the school district, but HS is a whole new ball game. Right now I am fighting because they want to take away his special busing, and have him ride the city bus. Which is what the regular HS kids do. I know he needs some independence, but this Just seems dangerous to me.
Oh wow that does seem stressful. I will cross my fingers for you!
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP
Continued spine-strengthening required. I got thrown in to pitch in on a project where some people have a warped sense of their importance. On a good note, one of the analysts seems to be very interested in perfumes but doesn’t know where to begin – I will have some fun!
To Petunia – yesterday’s Sunshine Woman encounter in the wild was walking down Madison Ave around 44th Street. Today in the office, someone on the same floor but on the other side of where I sit wore a nuclear amount of Angel; I think some got on me just by passing her in the hallway. I rarely recognize perfumes in the wild but when I do, it feels like I’ e won something 🙂
Always fun to find another perfume lover. My husband told me that he mentioned my hobby to his ward clerk on the unit where he works and she got all excited because she loves perfume. He thinks she’s around 30ish, so I’m looking at some samples to pass along to her.
Ooh, that is nice of you. My “student” is a newbie – she has a set of 5 Jo Malone travel sprays.
No. 19 EdC is glorious – still haven’t tried the modern formulations. Have you compared the EDC?
How fun! I would love to meet a newbie perfumista. Unfortunately, the coworkers I’ve met who do wear perfume only have a casual interest and only wear generic fruity florals. 😐 Not sure what to do about that.
I also get a thrill when I recognize a scent in the wild. Angel is an easy one, but I distinctly remember the times when I caught a whiff of Bulgari Omnia Crystalline and Pacifica Mediterranean Fig. So satisfying when you can solve life’s little mysteries!
Very curious to see which samples you have them try. Which ones are at the top of the list (and do you want suggestions 😉 )?
I will absolutely take suggestions. We work near a Saks so we may go sniffing there first to narrow down ber likes and dislikes before creating a set from my collection to try.
I have to dig out the No.19 EDC as I have never tried it!
Angel is probably the only perfume I’ve known with certainty that I can always identify correctly in the wild. It’s kind of like a face tattoo. 😀
Bwhahahahahahaha!
Or a punch in the nose. 😀
Truedat!
Exactly! yesterday I smelled Opium on a woman. I was so pleased.
I happen to like Opium but rarely wear it because it is neither office not scent-phobe family friendly!
hahaha! “some got on me just by passing her in the hallway”
I can completely relate!
I just remembered your co-worker wearing some strong perfume! What ever happened to her?
You seem to attract people who are excessively scented, perfume or otherwise. ????
It could be a blessing or a curse 😉
Love the bunnies! I thought about ordering one for my granddaughter, but the shipping is sky high. On to perfume–a coolish day so maybe more of Matin des Orages
I guess the shipping is the catch. Those don’t look too hard to make, if one were feeling crafty.
Leap of Faith as it just came in the mail as a free sample and I don’t know the notes….Dame Perfumery’s Citrus Man….so glad that I bought my father a full bottle of this for Father’s Day!
I know who’s going to be borrowing it a lot 😉
Oops That posted before I corrected it to Un Matin d’Orage.
Lots of leaps for me this week.
Monday = Lush Kerbside Violet
Starts off very, very green, faded to a wonderful violet and then proceeded to fade to nonexistence. To be fair, I did a lot of cleaning; between the dust and cleaning liquids it is highly likely my nose gave up on smelling my perfume.
Tuesday = Estee Lauder Tuberose Gardenia (not a leap by any stretch, just a wonderful scent to ease me back into work)
Today = Gucci Guilty Black
Carded sample that says it is a floriental despite the terribly artificial generic fruity opening that lasted about an hour and has now faded to a faint amber. Like so many other “black fragrances” this one fails to live up to its name, unless you (rightfully) feel guilty about paying more than x10 as much for a scent you could get from Bath and Body Works (and the shower gel and lotion to boot).
I was so looking forward to Kerbside Violet but once it arrived in-store and I smelled it on laper, I lost interest. It was oddly flat.
I did 5 sprays to start with, and it was gloriously green (though not to my SO’s liking). I’ll pay attention to the drydown when I retry, and let you know how it goes.
My Lush store didn’t even have paper for testing! So I just had to try all of them on my skin 😉 Did you like any of the others? Surprisingly my nose is very fond of All Good Things. Death and Decay was also love at first sniff although it is too bad they don’t offer a smaller size.
Lush likes to use Popsicle sticks for testing, which doesn’t quite seem greener than using little strips of paper. I also liked Death and Decay but didn’t like the dropper bottle.
That’s right! I used popsicle sticks!
I got a travel spray of All Good Things!
Tried 28 La Pausa from a sample kindly sent to me by a NSTer, but I couldn’t smell it. My nose? Or is it super subtle?
Now wearing Infusion d’Iris Absolu and hoping it is still available. Someone pointed out it’s resemblance to Purple Rain. Anyone have thoughts on this? The latter is expensive, but available.
Have not smelled Purple Rain but the discounters seem to have Id’I Absolu! $76 at Beauty Encounter for instance. Didn’t realize it had been d/c’ed, that’s too bad. It’s good stuff.
I do think 28LP is light but definitely detectable to me. Certain others around these parts do refer to it as 8-Spray La Pausa, though, so YMMV!
It *is* subtle, but you should be able to smell it. I spray this one very liberally, as the staying power definitely isn’t great.
I be one of the “Others” and advocate 8 healthy sprays of 28 La Pausa from the bottle – smells terrific and lasts all day.
And yes, Purple Rain is very similar to the Absolue, except it is brighter and more sparkly. Think of your favorite color and sprinkle fairy dust on it. Unless you care for subtle distinctions, getting the Absolue and pretending it’s Purple Rain at 1/5 the price should work 😉
SOTD = Salome (2 tiny spritzes, just enough)
OOTD = Pink linen tunic, heathered charcoal leggings, witty black trouser socks with little pink flowers, black loafers.
Witty socks are my sister’s method of livening up neutral professional outfits. Socks with color coordinated flowers, socks with lambies or teddy bears, etc.
Salome is my way of livening up any situation…
You smell great!
My mom is a printed sock devotee and they look so cute on her trim little ankles. I have the hocks of a draft horse and envy people who can wear patterns without stretching them to unholy proportions.
How interesting about your sick strategy! I do exactly the same–I even roll up my jeans to show a funky pattern. In fact, I was taking an early tutorial a few weeks back, and one group of students was visibly fascinated by something other than my fabulous explanations of whatever-it-was ????, then one blurted out, “Have you just got rad ankle tattoos?” The socks are silky, and apparently the bright Paisley pattern looked like skin! I was rather pleased that they thought I might have done such a light-hearted thing as drawing on my ankles…
And that would be “sock strategy”, not “sick strategy”! My apologies! I MUST, MUST, MUST poofred my coments before I post!
I’m another sock junkie and find this little touch of whimsy that’s mostly hidden under trousers and loafers enormously uplifting. My favorite pair are pale blue with little pink pigs with white wings that always remind me of an artist friend who took great inspiration from the concept of ‘When pigs fly . . . ‘
Ooooh, flying piggies….yes!
I do the same with socks under my scrubs. We have choice about what scrubs to wear anymore, so my only way to express my individuality is with funky socks and even more outrageous shoes. Thinking of doing something equally funky with my hair…
Spent a good night on the new mattress. So, yay. 🙂 (Returning or exchanging it would have engendered a restocking fee of about half what it cost, so I’m glad that I seem to be coming around to finding it comfortable.)
SOTD is Carven Le Parfum, not particularly interesting but very pretty, and comfortable in this *@&% humidity. Summer has descended with a vengeance.
Good for you! I had a very strong coffee yesterday afternoon which prevented me from getting more than 4 hrs sleep.. arrgghh!
I should have known better but at least I got a lot done that I needed too thru 10pm.
Hate that. Hopefully you’ll catch up tonight!
Great news! Hopefully it continues to be so, such that you can love your new mattress… Sometimes it is just an adjustment. I know it took us a while to feel the love connection.
Glad you like your new mattress…..
Yay!
Yup, curses on the heat and humidity. I’m on my way home and the train smells of Eau d’ Sour Milk (from the baby sitting in front of me) and au d’ Armpit B. O. from the guy who passed by a good 5 minutes ago. Yuck all around. Makes Angel sound positively APPEALING at nuclear levels. I just realized Eau d’ Armpit B.O. guy is sitting behind me. An Eau d’ Axe giy is now sitting next to me. HELP ME. I think I have to arm myself with Tiger Balm or something else metholated going forward!
Double yuck. Quadruple.
Late today! Busier than normal….guess it’s making the work day go a little faster!
SOTD: Lancome O d’Azur.
See y’all tomorrow!! 🙂
Hello. Thursday, but it feels like Friday, and how I wish it were! It’s Queen’s Birthday weekend here, and though I’m not remotely royalist, I’m grateful for this one remnant of the antiquated, misguided class system that gives us a mid-year long weekend. But to Thursday: a long busy day seeing students, so I want something sustaining and uplifting, and I think I’m going to give 19 another airing. She was a perfect angel last time, and her green sparkle was bracing. I have the extract and the EDP: I think today is a day for the extract. Four sprays, and I’m off…be well, everyone, and smell wonderful things, including yourselves, all day.
We’re scent siblings today with No.19. I’m in the EDP and I love it so!
It’s gorgeous when it behaves well, which I am very happy to say it is today. The far dry-down is just beautiful! I’m up to that it now, and I’m loving its strong, yet wistful, qualities.
Wearing my all-time favorite scent today. My SOTD is Nectarine Blossom and Honey by Jo Malone. Needed to wear a scent today that would raise my spirits. Went to the hospital this morning for my pre-op
appointment for my upcoming knee replacement surgery I am having on the 10th. This is my 2nd one (had my other knee done 2 years ago). Well, everything checked out well this morning, so my perfume did the trick. Hope everyone is having a pleasant day. 🙂
I hope the surgery goes well! My mother’s knee surgeries changed her life hugely for the better.
Wishing you all the bestbwith the upcoming surgery. Smart to have it done at the start of summer vacation!
Vetiver Tonka. Yesterday’s leap of faith turned into a scrubber (it’s been a long time since I actually scrubbed a scent from my arms), so I decided to go with a relatively untested sample, but one I have certainly smelled before. Besides, it’ll probably be gone by afternoon, at which point maybe I’ll have the guts to try something new.
Am in Stella EdP to continue things that feel pretty. I still have some Tauer samples that night be a leap of faith, plus an Ineke sample box that I haven’t really dived into….
Stella is definitely pretty! You smell great.
I also cleaned up with some lilac-scented soap from the farmers market that has some honey in it. Amazing how these little luxuries impact my attitude.
How’s your leg? Did you get some new arnica miracle gel?
I did! Thanks. It helped. Swelling is much reduced but I still can’t put weight on it. But it is much better. Just slow… I’m being very cautious to avoid re-straining.
I’m kind of blinking back the tears being back at work after 12 very lovely days off, probably a sign I should be reading about my current employment?
A dab of Cristalle to get me through…
So sorry!
I’m going double on the Leap of Faith today with Jour d’Hermès on one arm and Eau d’Orange Verte on the other. I’d smelled Jour on a test strip when it was released and liked it, but it is sadly going the way of Eau des Merveilles on my skin and not working for me. EdOV is smelling great but has pretty poor longevity. And that concludes today’s perfume adventure…
I am in the happy Quel Amour!. I’m draining my sample and may end up with a botle of this, it is a happy scent if ever there was one.
I just tried Quel Amour last night. It is very pretty!
It is, isn’t it. I love the Goutal house, at least, most of their earlier scents. I received a sample of their latest Rose Pompon, but it doesn’t come close to Quel Amour!
Well, this has been a terribly indulgent 24 hours for me. Last night Fumerie Perfumery held a fragrance swap and I attended. I got there early so went to a locally famous ice cream shop and had Almond Brittle and Chocolate Ganache ice cream for dinner. At the swap, about a dozen of us put out our bottles and talked and bargained. I swapped away my Tiziana Tirenzi White Fire and Guerlain Apres l’Ondee for a big bottle of No.19 edp, a Lalique Le Baiser, and a Le Labo sample set. Three remained unswapped and will probably go on ebay. This morning I had a massage and now I’m eating a caramel-drizzled, bacon-wrapped croissant with a latte for lunch. I think I had better have zucchini for dinner…and vegetables all day tomorrow as well. I’m wearing A La Nuit right now.
A la Nuit fits such a perfect day!
Oh good! I’m glad the event was a success, and that you got some goodies. 🙂 Forgot it was happening until yesterday, and I felt it was unfair to Tracy to register last second.
Your day and scent are wonderful! Keep enjoying life.
Now this is Indulgent with a capital I. Live it up, foxbins!
I was running late this morning so I took a “french bath” in Fragonard’s Riviera/Riviera and now waft a lemony mimosa trail. I think my acupuncturist liked it. After a shower, I will see if I can scare up a newbie sample of something.
Robin, love the bunnies!!!
Good! I thought they were cute.
June for me is all about roses and peonies. I’m starting the month in Cassis, Rose, and Sandalwood from Dame Perfumery, my favorite of his edt’s. I love everything about it!
That sounds lovely.
You smell lovely! Do you get much rose out of it? I seem to get lots of the cassis, all the way through. But I love it.
Yes, I get ‘enough’ rose and I do get the cassis all the way through, too. But I do love cassis as a note – as well as rose and sandalwood – so I guess whichever of those notes decides to be prominent at any given time is O.K. by me!
My husband brought in some peonies from the front garden and they are making the dining room smell like perfume. I couldn’t focus on the work in front of me because of the scent so I spent a little time this morning doing a little set up and photographing them.
SOTA: a little jasmine oil layered with L’air de Rien
LOVE love love peonies.
