Monday scent of the day 8/10

Posted by Robin on 10 August 2015 189 Comments

Narciso Rodriguez handbag

Ouch, another Monday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a bunch of stuff, including the new Eau de Toilette version of Narciso by Narciso Rodriguez.

Reminder: this Friday, 8/14, we're doing Fools Rush In...wear a perfume you bought within 5 minutes of smelling it. Bonus points if you ended up loving it! If you've never done anything so foolish, then wear the fragrance you bought the soonest after trying it.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is a clutch bag from the Fall 2015 collection at Narciso Rodriguez, price unknown.

Oh, I tried that new Narciso at the Duty Free yesterday! After 11 years, I think the original NR For Her EDT is still their best.

No SOTD yet- I am still in bed, with a cat who has no intention of letting me move. Maybe I’ll go with CBIHP Burning Leaves, one of her favorites.

Welcome back, although it doesn’t seem like you were on a REAL vacation since you were here everyday. Hopefully, you FEEL like you were on a vacay and have returned rested and rejuvenated!

Love that clutch but it doesn’t go with my current attire, a very stylish set of pajamas :)

SOTD is leftovers from last night- PdE Musc Tonkin edp from a small decant. I like the extrait better but only have a small sample of it and don’t feel completed to attain a FB of the edp. My decant will suffice (sigh of relief from my pocketbook).

Hope everyone has a fab Monday (I know, that’s a total oxymoron!)

Great gravatar, Deva! Haven’t checked out Musc Tonkin extrait, only the EdP, and that stuff is powerfully long wearing. I don’t think I’ve ever really clocked it. I can’t imagine a MORE concentrated version. If the extrait has a bit less fruit, and more animalic growl, now that would be better in my book. Hope you enjoyed your Monday ;D

Yes, I extrait is a bit more furry. It doesn’t project as much and just a teeny tiny dollop is all that’s needed. But it’s gone baby gone…

Are you compensating for going scentless for so long? ;)
I’m wearing the original Divine by Divine. I still haven’t found out who the nose is for that one. Yann Vasnier was listed on one site but as Divine came out in 1986, I’m guessing he had not even passed his Bac.
Anyway, great scent, if you like classic French perfumery, as I do.

I realise that I left my sentence sort of unfinished. I meant that in 1986 Yann Vasnier had not even passed his Bac.
I’ve been trying to translate a difficult text into French and my brain is slowly giving up on me.

            10 August 2015 at 1:23 pm

When looking up what else he had created I realised that this is a young perfumer. I don’t know who your source is but Aurélien Guichard is in his late thirties, which means he was still in primary school when this fragrance was created.

          • Robin says:
            10 August 2015 at 2:10 pm

Did he do the EdT too? I confess I have not even checked. And doubtless they’ll say he did even if he didn’t!

And Austenfan, we are talking about Narciso, which is 2014, and not Narciso Rodriguez For Her, which is much older.

          • Robin says:
            10 August 2015 at 2:15 pm

Ok, and NR For Her is 2003, I think, Christine Nagel and Francis Kurkdjian. And Aurelien Guichard’s picture is rather old now. I do have listings for him that are nearly that old!

          • austenfan says:
            10 August 2015 at 2:33 pm

I’m sooo sorry, I think you meant Narciso and I meant Divine. This is becoming very chaotic, anyway, it doesn’t matter. I’ve since discovered that Aurélien was 32 in 2010, so there is another titbit.

        • Robin says:
          10 August 2015 at 2:16 pm

Ha, but you were talking about Yann Vasnier, weren’t you? Sorry, I think I”ve made the confusion worse.

austenfan, all I could find was that Parfums Divine was established by Yvon Mouchel in 1986, and there are a few references I found that he was the perfumer for Divine. Here are a couple:

Ugh.. the day back from a vacation is a tough one. Ease in… no rush, and call it a day around 3pm ;)

SOTD for me is Osmanthus Interdite.. and love how Lucky Scent describes this, “Delicate and alluring, the fragrance is joyful and tranquil…a secret blossoming oasis of beauty in the midst of our busy modern life.” They nailed it IMHO.

Friday’s project sounds fun! Can’t wait to read how everyone answers..

I get these two fragrances from NR so confused. The first, original, NR fragrance was too much musk for me. I can’t even tell if I’ve sampled the newer one from the “white” bottle, b/c the samples I keep trying to get all just say: Narciso Rodriguez!!! Very frustrating. It’s like revisiting the whole Ferre “Ferre”, Ferre Ferre, fiasco!!!

Yes, Ubar seems related to Amarige. Or maybe closer to Ysatis, I think I actually did a throwdown between (rereleased) Ubar and Ysatis. Or meant to, one or the other.

    I’m wearing Carner D600
But mostly I’m posting to report on some vaguely perfume related news from Britain and South Africa. According to the Independent:

A technique used to identify the exact substances in a perfume, or other chemical substance has now been used on some very old, and not very clean pipes, most particularily on residue in “tobacco” pipes found in the Stratford-upon-Avon garden of William Shakespeare.

Residue from clay tobacco pipes more than 400 years old from the playwright’s garden were analysed in Pretoria using a sophisticated technique called gas chromatography mass spectrometry.

    They discovered traces of marijuana.

One of the sponsors of the study suggests that this proves that Shakespeare indulged in pot. However, the story raises some questions:
    1. Did foolish Elizabethen Brits become addicted to tobacco because the early imports from New World mixed pot and tobacco and the Brits thought that it was the poisonous tobacco which was pleasant rather than the pot?
    2. Since Shakespeare did not actually live at home very much, (preferring London, and possibly a mysterious good looking youth and lovely dark lady to his wife Anne Hathaway), who exactly was smoking those pipes? (Assuming that the dope actually was left behind by Shakespeare or his contemporaries).
    3. Is England so bereft of chemical engineers that the pipes had to be sent to South Africa.

It’s a wonder Britain let those pipes out of the country. That’s more amazing to me than the Mary Jane residue.

Scoundrel, indeed! When I was a teenager, I announced to my mother that I thought that Shakespeare and John Donne would be wonderful lovers. Instead of being pleased that my interests had turned literary and were no longer directed towards the boy two doors down–him with the very big motor-bike and no discernible morals whatsoever–she said very sniffly that both Shakespeare and Donne would have had bad breath and BO. She sent me away to read social history to cure my imagination (didn’t work!)

As I recall from the article (available through the Huffington Post UK, the sponsor has argued that certain lines in Shakespeare are direct references to cocaine and marijuana, which (again according to the article) were being brought into England during the periods of Shakespeare’s life.
Shakespeare, based on the references to innovative shipping practices, international travel, and his audacious construction of the Globe Theatre, seemed intensely interested in the new and exciting of his day. So if new substances were available, I’d imagine he’d be up for sampling them. On the other hand, if he wanted to write about them, why wouldn’t he do so clearly, None of this stuff was illegal.
The article I read including some references to someone huffing about how dare anyone accuse Shakespeare of being a pot head, instead of a genus.. How many potheads have come close to writing a Shakespeare play in the years since, he asked?
Well, yeah most Brits who smoke pot in their pipes do no write anything of merit. Neither do most Brits who do not smoke pot. Few people of any sort turn out to be writers. And only Shakespeare, was Shakespeare (Note: Despite the claims of a few that Lord Francis Bacon was Shakespeare)

I do have a little trouble imagining Ms. Austen smoking a hookah between her sewing, caring for her mother, and her writing. Still there are a a few Brits over the years who have both smoked something or other and have been geniuses. Barrett Browning took morphine on a daily or nearly daily basis (probably originally for a back injury), Cooleridge supposedly dreamed up Xanadu in a hash fog and Sir McCartney, whose written a nifty tune or two, has been arrested for possession.

“The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is a favorite of mine and there are some definite descriptive scenes that may have been induced by some type of psychedelic substance. Not a good trip either, mores the pity for poor Samuel :(

I suspect, dear ihadanidea, that you’re always elegant, not just by deliberate choice on a particular day! One the best things about 31RC is that the untouchability (untouchableness?) it projects is an illusion. In a rather subtle way, it is actually quite a “come hither” scent…have a wonderful day!

Wearing a bit of Givenchy’s L’Atelier de Givenchy Neroli Originel from a sample this morning…it’s a really lovely, natural, soft, sweet but not syrupy neroli. I enjoy it, but there are so many nerolis out there that I find the high price of this one a bit too bogus to entertain, even if I had money to burn (although if I really had enough money to take that that phrase literally there’s no telling what I might do…I’m thinking garments of cake level hedonism here). But seriously, some of these houses are getting out of control price-wise.

For Keep-It-Simple Monday, I’ve layered YR Mure Sauvage shower gel, body lotion, and edt. I smell like the blackberry plants growing along my back fence: a bit earthy, a bit green, a bit musky, with berries ripening in the sun but not quite there yet – almost sweet but still tart, even somewhat bitter. And definitely deep purple, almost black.

    Welcome home, Robin!
I have two SsOTD, one on each wrist: Patchouli Patch and Oyedo. They are so different that the comparison hardly seems fair, but I just plunge my hand into my samples tin and wear whatever I grab. I really dislike Oyedo without knowing what it is that smells so noxious, but fortunately it doesn’t last long. PP smells a bit soapy to me, but it’s hanging on, and in drydown does not remind me at all of patchouli. Very small patch, I guess.

The noxious note for me in Oyedo is thyme, and that note lasts for hours! Thyme is used in some foul-smelling disinfectants sold at health food stores.

I can’t stand Patchouli Patch! It’s one of only two Duchaufours that I actively dislike. I’m not a huge patch fan, but there are patchouli perfumes I love, and can appreciate it I as an element of a complex composition. Hence, so it’s probably something other than the patchouli in Patchouli Patch that I can’t tolerate. Don’t care for Oyedo, either. I hope you have better luck with your next sample draw!

Hello, all, and best of everything to everyone.
Thank you to all my well-wishers yesterday: I saw all your lovely comments, but I was all flolloppy and anyhow, and no matter how I tried, couldn’t seem to put words together to reply. The pro-seed-u-ah (as the surgeon pronounced it) went well, and I apparently behaved with exemplary decorum except for announcing afterwards that I was so happy, I could vomit on the ceiling. According to my husband, that engendered much anxiety and a positive flurry of activity! I’m rather hungry, though, and I have two lines of a limerick in my head: “If I go without breakfast and dinner/I’m bound to get quickly much thinner….” So now I’m matching my perfume to my hunger: gourmand, any gourmand will do. Home today because of swelling and discomfort, so I shall spray with abandon!

I’m an RN too, and part of the post-anesthesia assessment is how to discern what is relevant in what the patient is conveying! Joyous vomiting may be a concern due to aspiration and pressure on tissues and stitches, etc. Being the Statue of Liberty is probably simply … interesting, but could have some weird relevance. :)

I haven’t heard “flolloppy” since Felicity Kendal uttered it in the Britcom “The Good Neighbors.” Was it Orwell who used the phrase “positively invertebrate?” I’ll have to ask my husband.

The sexism (and other “isms”) in “The Good Life/Neighbors” rankled me when I watched it as a kid in re-runs in the 80s on public TV in America. Overall, I thought that the show was funny and charming, even though it pissed me off occasionally.

“The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin” was funny for a while, but then it got depressing, IMO.

I’ve got a Fools Rush In scent today, and it’s Caroline from Sweet Anthem in Seattle. We were visiting Seattle and made a detour to check out the local perfume shop, and Meredith Smith (perfumer and purveyor) offers such nice small bottles. I don’t wear it much, but when I do, I enjoy it.

Late to the party as usual. Had to attend to Monday Morning Dramas at work (sigh)

The day started off quite nicely though. I awoke to my most favorite morning view: the canyons below our house were full of fog, with bright sunny skies above: it always seems to me that I could step out and walk across the top of the fog bank to the ridge beyond. (Anyone ever seen the movie ‘A Walk In The Clouds’? Terrible movie, dear Keanu at his most wooden, but lovely cinematography. The title refers to just this sort of view.)

SOTD is EL Dazzling Silver. Pretty and yet a bit otherworldly. Seemed to fit.

That’s a very pretty movie, even if it’s cliche and Keanu is, as you say, awfully wooden.

SOTD is Demeter Gingerale. It’s actually cool and overcast here today, but I’m still enjoying my summer rotation!

Actually I’ve–finally–started keeping a perfume diary this summer, and it’s been interesting to see that, outside testing a handful of new things, I’ve worn the same six or eight perfumes every week since the beginning of July! Not sure I would have been able to predict that that was my pattern. Would love to hear whether others’ diaries have yielded similarly surprising info about their perfume usage (oh man that’s so nerdy but I really do want to know.)

REALLY need to try Gingerale. Every time it comes up I say that, but I have yet to find some to try.

Amaranthine. Sometimes you can’t know if you like a thing until you wear it in quantity. Especially a dirty summer floral?

Oh this is perfect: I never know what to say when SAs ask me what kind of perfumes I like, and clearly “dirty summer florals” is the best possible answer!

heh. I just have a little decant of this one, but it’s in the “dirty summer florals” section of my sample box…

Carven Le Parfum? I like that one. Don’t really notice much iris in it.

Wearing Ligea La Sirena by Carthusia today over lavender shea butter lotion by C & E. Just craving lavender today. A perfect sunny 80 degree day with no humidity.

I’m wearing Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme today. I was at Sephora over the weekend and saw that they’re finally offering this one in a travel spray by itself, so I snapped it up!

Packing and shopping today for part 2 of The Family Vacation. Comparison wearing Fire Island on my right arm, and Bronze Goddess on my left. So far, the thing that makes Fire Island an occasional chemical spill, is also what can make it so great–it is a blast of sun hot tropical florals and sun oil that is tenacious…. Bronze Goddess is more demure (and it isn’t exactly a skin scent!), with woods in the base– dried sweet myrrh and sandalwood, rather than the fatty tuberose and neroli oil finish of Fire Island… if that makes any sense!

SOTD was a sample of Guerlain Chant d’Aromes which I did not enjoy. Green, bitter, soapy floral. I think soapy will always be a “no”.
But all was redeemed by my little stash of Songes body oil that I keep in my work bag for fragrance emergencies.

My response to Cd’A too. I want to love it, but it’s more from a sense of duty than anything, much like my feelings for broccoli.

      Love Après l’Ondee though.

Yes, the comparison to broccoli is perfect(the taste isn’t appealing enough to suffer through the laborious act of chewing it). Now you have a good excuse to avoid it for a bit (the veg, that is). I have enough Guerlains to love at the moment as well.

Soapy is still a big no for me too.

I don’t get soapy from aldehydes, though – a lot of people do. For me it’s nearly always orange blossom/neroli.

I think it depends what the aldehydes are combined with. Neroli is a toughy. Almost always soapy. I’ve found a couple OB that don’t have that bitter, soapy edge. But I also find those pretty boring.

I was rifling through old samples yesterday, and came upon two of the very first ones I ordered from luckyscent back in 2009 (I think), right after I happened upon a copy of The Guide in a public library (yay libraries!). The samples were Nicolai’s Odalisque, which I wore yesterday, and Fig Tea, which I wore today. I think both have aged beautifully, and I find them much more satisfying now than when I first got them. Back then, as a noob, I thought they were pretty, but they didn’t “speak” to me. I wonder which of us has changed more over time: the perfumes, or me?…
