Wednesday scent of the day 8/5

Posted by Robin on 5 August 2015 200 Comments

Thoreau house Wellfleet

Happy Oyster Day! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm commando again, and I apologize for my boring perfume rotation this week.

Reminder: this Friday, 8/7, will be Perfumer Spotlight...name a perfumer you don't think gets as much attention as s/he should, and wear one of their perfumes.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

No need to apologize Robin, and besides, sometimes taking a bit of a break allows you to come back to sniffing with more enthusiasm.

Wearing a bit of my new decant of Dior’s Bois d’Argent, which I loved in the bottle (reminded me very much of one of my favorites – VC&A’s Bois d’Iris) but there’s a note in the first few minutes right now that I’m not loving – haven’t figured out what it is yet.

My review of it years ago said “Swiss Miss packet spilled on a car seat” and “running blender motor.” (Not in a bad way, necessarily!)

Interesting. I guess I could see the Swiss Miss packet earlier in the development in the sweetness, but that part has passed for me now. But fascinating comparison.

Agreed. I took a break for about a week one time and I honestly acted like a kid in a candy store when I ordered samples!
Today I am wearing Ramon Monegal Cherry Musk. It isn’t working for me. I am not picking up the cherry and the musk is a bit too on the fresh side. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

SOTD = Un Fille de Berlin! Enjoying my spray application of this from my brand new FB. I’ve never been very rosy – now I have a couple fave rose perfumes. This blog has been invaluable to me in my search for splendid new fragrances. What a great place, with all you wonderful perfumista people to read…

You are right, this blog is invaluable. I recently bought a full bottle of this too. It is lovely. I can tell you that I have bought several bottles over the last few years from recommendations here. It has opened up a whole new world for me.

This is one of the better perfume communities, if not the best. I have been to quite a few where the line of perfume is crossed when they start including non fragrance related topics and threads and before you know it, it becomes a debate forum where the mud is slung. You’re left wondering” I thought this was a perfume site” and quietly make your exit.
Thanks for keeping it genuine Robin!

Same here. Not a huge rose fan but as I look at my collection I’ve got quite a few roses I enjoy regularly and it’s all due to the very experienced community here at NST guiding me along.

One of my favorite rose perfumes, if not my very favorite. I especially love the musky base. I’ve seen it at the online discounters lately, if anyone is interested . . .

Congrats! LFdB is an outstanding rose. I like the base too – I have lots that go all patchouli in the base, and I really enjoy how LFdB does not go there, and is soft and musky. It wears like a year round fragrance for me, which the patchouli ones regardless of how good, do not.

SOTD is BPAL “Blossoms in Springtime” perfume oil. Listed notes include:

Vanilla bean and vanilla blossom, golden honey, antiqued amber, beeswax, copal, lotus blossom, and helichrysum.

I bought this about 3 years ago and felt it too sweet so I stashed it away. Aging seems to have worked well because, although it’s still sweet, it’s also wonderfully warm and deep with a distinct ambery-incensey vibe. The florals seems to lighten it a bit so it’s really not too heavy in the heat.

Happy Hump day to all :)

It’s an acronym for Black Pheonix Alchemy Lab. They have a vast and maze-like website that can be a bit overwhelming, but I have found some wonderful oils through sampling. They have a definite gothic literary vibe, which I find entertaining.

Just to be clear, I’m not affiliated in any way, I just enjoy oil based perfumes as much as alcohol based :)

After hearing so much about it, I recently bought a bottle of Cristalle and am wearing that today. Went to Mall of American last week and they had one bottle of the EDT left at Nordies. Lucky me. At first I thought it may be too green for me, but once it settles down it is lovely.

Yes, the edt lasts maybe 2 hours tops. It is very sheer – almost an edc. I get the most joy with Cristalle edt by just spraying with abandon. If you really get an area wet the earthy oakmoss part tends to stick around for a while. The edp lasts a bit longer and acts more like a white flowers fragrance.

Aedes Copal Azul. I’ve really fallen hard for this line. I’ve loved every one I’ve tried so far, and every one has broadened my horizons, perfume-wise. To me, they’re everything a niche line should be. Now I just have to start saving for a FB!

The temperature is down substantially today and, as predicted, my hand went straight for the decant of Tabac Blond. It’s been months since I last wore this, and that break apparently re-set my nose because I’m smelling a very slightly animalic note (in the best possible way) that I never noticed before.

Anniky, which one do you prefer, La Pausa or Rue Cambon (this with regards to a upcoming visit, if all goes well, to Place Vendome in 3 weeks time)?

      • Annikky says:

I love both, but I think Rue Cambon is more successful as a perfume: it’s exquisitely blended and balanced. For an elegant yet interesting perfume I don’t think it has many rivals. The iris in La Pausa is stunning, but the perfume as a whole is less multifaceted and the lack of lasting power is frustrating. Still, these first 30 minutes are among the best 30 minutes in perfumery :)

Commando right now but it will be either No. 19 or 28 La Pausa or Iris Poudre, all airplane cabin friendly. I am leaving for Copenhagen later today and will be meeting with a perfumista (not an NST commenter) on Thursday afternoon. And, I’ve decided on No. 19 as my staple for vacation, although I may bring a few others to keep it company.

I’ll comment again in a few days.

“Going commando” is an expression for wearing no underwear (apparently a reference to being, er, “ready for action” in the way that commando units were always ready for attack). Hope that helps. :)

I would never have known you are not a native English speaker. Which brings us back to Moulin Rouge :-) Yes, “kitschy” is close to “campy”. I like Moulin Rouge BTW. I wore it recently to a burlesque-themed show recently. It fit perfectly with the atmosphere.

Scent is such a wonderful thing, as I think at the moment Moulin Rouge and Mon Parfum Cherie are my absolute favourites, but they don’t fit my profile at all (outdoorsy, dog, cat, slightly frumpy if I am not careful…)!
Now I am going to look up Burlesque, which sounds like a wonderful word.

I tried finding a more full explanation of the expression “going commando” in my Oxford English Dictionary which just gives: colloq. “not wearing any underpants”. A brief online search reveals several sources: Vietnam soldiers supposedly avoided underwear because of heat and humidity. And apparently during WWII it was used for prostitutes who were called the “Piccadilly Commandos”.
I first heard of the term in this highly funny interview on British TV (at 2:01)

I started with Moon Bloom and then did a few sprays of Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom and very glad I did because the Moon Bloom does not last at all on me! It’s a gorgeous scent but what good is it if it’s gone in 30 minutes?

The orange blossom is lingering just beautifully and probably a favorite OB of mine.

Exactly my opinion re Moon Bloom!! Really, really beautiful. Doesn’t last. I think when I did the Jo Malone/Annick Goutal/lightweight scent spray-until-wet technique I got 80 minutes out of it, the first ten of which were A-bomb mushroom cloud sillage.

I will take some Carnal Flower instead, thanks, purely for the better lasting power. All other things being equal, I would probably have a tough time deciding between the two.

      Hi Mals,

We’re on vacation with the boys and my eldest is also starting high school next year…the sweet and the bitter as we are having hilarious water fights by the pool and dreaming up names for new flavors of ice cream…. But in the evenings he’s practicing proper annotating as he reads ‘The Book Thief.’ Discussions at bedtime about death as narrator seem miles away from chocolate chunky marble peanut monkey dough!

My vacation scents– some old and new favorites, others I am testing: Eau D’Orange Verte, Monsieur Balmain, Amyris Femme, Jardins de Bagatelle, Hanbury, and Sideris. … We are renting a house near the south entrance to Yosemite Valley, and it gets mighty warm, so fragrances had to be bearable in the heat.

I’ve been MIA this week because the only thing I’ve worn is No. 5, which usually means I’m stressed out of my mind. My precious big cat, Mr. B., bolted between my feet and out the door to chase a huge stray tomcat a several nights ago (I heard a noise on the patio and had gone to check). He has been outside before under strict supervision since we live very near two major roadways and our fence doesn’t go all the way to the ground, and in the past he has always come right back when he has escaped. He’s old, fat, and defenseless and not to be found anywhere so I’m terribly afraid he is hurt. The weather has been over 100f and it hasn’t rained in six weeks so at this point I hope someone has stolen him and he’s safe since he has a heavy black coat and overheats easily. All we have done for the last several days is bother the neighbors, vet clinics, and the shelter staff, and plod endlessly through the area calling for him. He’s microchipped and had tags but that doesn’t always help. Please, everyone send good vibes for his return!
I know I owe someone a sample, I haven’t forgotten and promise I will get it in the mail soon. Sorry.

Arghhh… We went through that for three days and I could barely sleep. One of cats goes everywhere and makes friends with everything (dogs, skunks, deer, groups of teenage boys on bikes, folks visiting open houses….) He is really well-known and loved in the neighborhood, which is why I generally don’t worry if he doesn’t come home for a day. I know people “borrow” him….but for three days he was gone earlier this summer…way too long. To wrap up this overlong story…. Seeing that we were looking for the cat, a neighbor mentioned a ‘suspicious’ conversation he had had with an elderly woman who had been standing in front of our house a few days earlier about the cat. He thought he could recognize her if he saw her again, and had a vague idea where she lived. So my older son and the neighbor went knocking on doors in the general area where he thought she lives. Eventually they found her. When she came to her doors, she said,’ Oh, are you looking for the cat?” And when she opened the door wide enough, out came our naughty, beloved kitty. She told my son, ‘Your mother said it was okay if I did this.’ How weird is that?!?! Anyway, cat came home much to all our relief and happiness, and I got my first decent night’s sleep in several days!

Bizarre! We have a couple of really strange reclusive people a few houses down who I know have cats and I have wondered if they may have snatched him. Probably not but you never know. I’ve been creeping them out by staring at their front windows just in case.
I’m waiting for the cops to knock on our door and ask why we are wandering the area yelling “Bat” at midnight (Bat is his real name and how we address him, Mr. B or Mr. Butter, pronounced ‘mistah buttah’ are nicknames and an old family joke). During the day there is too much traffic noise to hear if he responds.

I used to live next door to a couple we nicknamed “The Kravitzes” after the characters on Bewitched. The wife had a lawn chair set up in the front yard facing our house. I really felt for her, as after she retired inside for the evening, my fiance and I could be found in their bushes on occasion yelling Blammo! We never had a conversation, so she never knew that Blammo was our cat.

Every once in a while my “old man” Nero (he’s 14) decides to stay out all night, esp. in the summer. He knows very well that we have feral cats, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, black bears, and even the occasional bobcat in our woods. I worry a little, but I figure at his age he’s looking for some fun and wants to embrace his inner cat. Sometimes I know he’s just hiding under the deck and watching and smelling what’s going on. He still tries to climb up trees too. I worry, but I still like to indulge him in his geriatric years. (I worry more about the neighbors dogs during the day honestly.) I tell him that if he gets eaten by a coyote I’m not taking him to the vet. He just gives me the skunk eye and refuses to come in. The other 2 cats are jealous b/c I don’t let them out at all.

Wow – let me think about this and review my funds!

And yes about purse/travel. I usually make small decants of vials of frags so that I can carry them around with me. I thought that perhaps I could spray some of this into the wide mouth 3 ml vials with screw tops that I have b/c certainly the mouth was big enough for my aim. But the lovely bulb atomizer makes such a puffy mist that it just wasn’t effective for decanting. It didn’t get wasted per se, but it just kind of floated all over the place. Not enough spray in the spray b/c it comes out in such a fine mist. The bulb atomizer twist locks so there is no evaporation problem with the bottle as with some bulb atomizers, but Diptyque really came up with a split proof bottle for sure.

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to decant some so I can keep some at work, but it seems like getting it into another container would be impossible or require six very coordinated hands :-(

It could be a whole new line – “Unnecessary”, “Forgettable”, “Not a Perfume”, and the flankers “Not a Perfume I Would Wear”, “Not a Perfume My Dog Would Wear” and “Not a Perfume Anyone Should Wear (extrait!)”…

I missed commenting yesterday, when I tested the new Bulgari Eau Parfumee au The Bleu (please forgive my lack of accents!) I enjoyed the dry cool pepperiness of the shiso and the the pleasant, fresh, sundried bitterness of the lavender. It dried down a bit oddly on me though, very green and a bit sour, and I couldn’t figure out what note would have caused that!

So far today I’m just wearing the remnants of the Shalimar edt I wore to sleep-it’s a great bedtime comfort scent.

I’m sampling Little Italy from Bond to satisfy my curiosity about the orange peel that’s an acquired taste. I didn’t think orange peel could be an acquired taste. I thought everyone liked it right away. But now I get it. Weirdly plastic but weirdly pleasant orange peel might be an acquired taste, were I to acquire it.

Bond No 9’s owner, Laurice Rahme, was the sole US distributor of Annick Goutal fragrances for many years. Bond’s Little Italy is rumored to be her tribute to Goutal’s Eau D’Hadrien.

SOTD is Mugler Fougere Furieuse. I just ordered a decant from the STC flash sale so I am no longer worried about draining my sample! It is too hot outside for this scent, but since I will be stuck inside in the air conditioning, it works!!

Morning, all. Hope what remains of your Wednesday is glorious and that Thursday is shaping up promisingly. I couldn’t sleep last night and feel a bit ragged this morning, so I’ve chosen a perfume that makes no demands of me: Ted Lapidus Silk Way. For something that was such a cheap thrill, it’s surprisingly interesting. The fruity top notes are short-lived on me, and after a flirty five or so minutes, the scent settles into a pleasing warmth, perfect for the stormy morning outside. I must admit that during the opening, Silk Way needs a very different person from the one I am: someone with a bouncy pony tail, perhaps, and a bare middle (Brrrr! Cold!), but as the wear matures, it comes closer to my age and general proclivities. If it didn’t get older in the way it does, I’d probably save it for the beach in summer, but as it does behave in this obliging way, it suits my day and the season rather well.

tried to up the smoke and dust in theorema by adding 1 tiny spray from a sample of sss incense (only at the wrist) but that sss totally devoured the theorema. oh well.
    I experiment so you don’t have to…

No surprise there, lol! Thanks for the notes. I like to layer Traversee du Bosphore with the SSS Champage de Bois. The CdB cuts the sweetness of TdB, and the TdB kind of accentuates the incense and woods in CdB.

I decided on Rose de Siwa today by MDCI. It’s just so pretty. I have a small decant as part of a sample set. I will be sad when it’s gone but I can’t justify the price.

Sample of the day is a many-years-old vial of CBIHP Tea Rose Water Perfume. I love how delicate it is, it’s more like smelling a real flower than a perfume which is rare for my nose.

I use this sample once in a while but it seems like it’s bottomless. I should just dump the whole thing on my arm and be done with it, but I hate to see the end of it.

I wish I could dilute some PW Tea Rose so it smells like the CBIHP. PW Tea Rose is a stunner, CBIHP Tea Rose is a gentle whisper.

Re: the earlier convo about “going commando” . . . that phrase always reminds me of Joey Tribbiani. Ha!
