If you have a free moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day!
I'm wearing Etro Shaal Nur.
Reminder: this Friday, 7/17, will be Italian Niche Friday — wear something from Acqua di Parma, Lorenzo Villoresi, i Profumi di Firenze, Santa Maria Novella, or any other Italian niche brand.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
SOTD: Extreme (Tom Ford).
I need to go try the new women’s Noir…
I discovered Tauerville Vanilla Flash at Twisted Lily this weekend and immediately plunked down $30 for the rollerball. It’s the most wearable Tauer I’ve tried by far- tasty, comforting vanilla. Reminds me a lot of What We Do In Paris Is Secret, but deeper and less powdery. Which happens to be exactly what I always wished for from WWDIPIS!
I like Vanilla Flash a lot, too. I blind bought a rollerball the day I heard about its release! You smell great!
I like Vanilla Flash as well. I layer it with Rose Flash and prefer that combo to PHI.
I like this combination as well, and it also reminds me of an improved PHI!
🙂
How’s the lasting power on this?
Sillage and longevity are excellent, floragal!
I tried this recently at Our Lady and have considered making a purchase. I have a decant of ROSE Flash that I never wear, but this one *does* seem easier. Good to hear that it lasts for you, as that was one of my concerns.
Terracotta again…so summery!
Yes it is!
Wearing Onda extrait, which I can’t stop sniffing. SO hates it, but oh well.
Onda! You smell fabulous!
Bvlgari Black today. Wore it to bed last night and topped it off this morning. Delish!
Approved! 🙂
I am wearing the original Eau d’Italie. It is a slightly odd citrus mineral scent.
Gosh, have not smelled it since it came out. I should try it again. Plus need to try the new one.
L’Ete en Douce. Summer skin in a bottle, love it.
Great description!
L’Ete en Douce is beautiful (always + when nothing else works)
PdN Balkis, such an easy fragrance to wear. I love it.
I’m glad you mentioned Etro. I thought I had only one Italian niche fragrance but I have a few Etro’s.
I’m giving one last hurrah for Bastille Day today, in 24 Faubourg. Tomorrow will switch to Italy. 🙂
I dug up a half vial of Mariella Burani from amongst my samples. It’s pretty and interesting. I like it.
It’s a real shame they discontinued MB – as with all great and disc frags! – I have a bottle of this I bought in the late 90s. I don’t wear it as much as I should b/c I’m hording it. It’s about half full. I always want to kick myself for not buying another bottle of this when it was still available about 7 or 8 years ago. Now it’s super expensivo.
I am wearing Songes body oil, it is really great for summer.
Yay! You smell delish 🙂 I’ve been wearing it a lot this summer.
Oh, I bet it is!
Mitsouko today. Kinda wish I had L’heure Bleue instead for this rainy day, but I’m out of it.
SOTD is Infusion d’iris.
I am unexpectedly going to Bar Harbor, Maine, for a few days. Any recommendations?
It’s going to be sunny but cool apparently; I wonder what perfume I should bring…
The Maine coast is beautiful! We went a few summers ago, and while we didn’t make it as far north as Bar Harbor, we had a great time on whale-watching and puffin-watching tours.
Lovely town! Acadia park is a must. Not been for 15+ years but I remember my trip there fondly..
We went kayaking in Acadia and were approached by delightful seals. Also the bike paths are extensive and easily accessed. There are lovely short hikes to great viewpoints. Or you can just sit on some rocks by the ocean and daydream. No way to go wrong!
All of this sounds amazing!
Honeymooned at Acadia, in early May. (Years ago, but still.) It was gorgeous.
Sunny and cool is a very forgiving kind of weather for fragrance! You can pull out some of your bigger scents and know that they won’t overwhelm. I like my spicy roses in this sort of weather, and scents that otherwise seem to disappear, like Bois des Iles, can sometimes be more pronounced as they warm in the sun. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks!
Today I’m sampling By Killian’s Imperial Tea. I liked the first minute or two when I could smell the jasmine, but now I smell like old loose-leaf tea in a clay pot before it’s brewed. Kinda dry and dusty and acrid. I was hoping the jasmine note would bloom on me, but so far it hasn’t.
That is on the top of my ‘to sample’ list!
Oakland Fresca, I’d be happy to send you my sample! You can email me at harukirumi in the land of yahoooh.
Have you considered steeping yourself in hot water?
Regina, you just made my day! 😀
*giggles uncontrollably*!!
Wow. That sounds amazing! I have been in a jasmine mood, and I don’t have any properly jasmine-centric fragrances in my wardrobe. I tried two the other day thanks to a perfumista friend (thanks, FB!), and they have both stuck in my mind and will require retesting: Creed Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie and Montale Jasmin Full. I have many tea scents already, but I don’t think I’ve reached my limit.
Of course, dusty and acrid doesn’t sound awesome. I like the “dry” of Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain, but not the “dry” of Caron’s Parfum Sacre (all ashes!).
Marjorie Rose, if Oakland Fresca doesn’t want my sample, you’re welcome to it.
Thank you, that’s sweet of you! Let me know. 🙂
marjoriehundtoft at yahoo etc.
I love the opening of Imperial Tea. So much so that I’ll probably (eventually) spring for a FB. In this imaginary future I’m wealthy and don’t care that I’ll have to spritz it on every 10 minutes, of course. I don’t mind the drydown so much, but it’s nothing compared to the opening.
There’s just nothing like the smell of jasmine tea.
Yes, the opening is gorgeous!
If Regina’s fantastic suggestion doesn’t work out, you could experiment with layering it with some straight jasmine. I’ve got that aromatic mist (Jasmine grandiflorum absolute in alcohol) from Enfleurage Inc I’ve been mooning over. I’d be happy to share in the name of science.
Thank you! I will check out Enfleurage Inc momentarily. I actually had thought of doctoring my sample, but I figured if I could pass it on that would be preferable.
Wow! I’m thrilled you inspired me to check them out! Thank you so much! I also read the NST interviews which are excellent. Where on the site are the aromatic mists?
I will refrain from bombarding you with any more unbridled enthusiasm, but I’m a kid in a candy shop 🙂
Keep it coming! For the aromatic mists, click on “Sprays,” fourth tab from the left. What and where are the NST interviews?
On their website under “Media.” Or …

Today I layered Grey Flannel with 24 Faubourg and I’m really digging it. The Grey Flannel butches 24 Faubourg up and mellows it out in a fun way.
Advice time! Tomorrow my husband and I are driving up to Ottowa, then Montreal, then Quebec City. We’ve never been up that way and we’ll be gone 10 days in celebration of our 10 year anniversary. Does this wise group have any recommendations for restaurants, sides streets, boutiques, or general “must-dos” or “must-smell”s? We haven’t done much planning aside from booking hotels, so I’m’ ready to wander!
Quebec city is so romantic-
Enjoy your anniversary and I am sure you will discover lots of things to smell and taste.
My husband is Canadian -lots of good things come out of that country <3
We love Canada. We honeymooned in Victoria & Vancouver. We’re from the Seattle area, so are familiar with BC, but this is our first time to the east.
My husband and I went for Christmas 2 years ago and it really is a small enough, and lazy enough town to go at your own pace and do whatever comes up. Nothing really stands out as a must do, but summer probably has many more options than winter. Enjoy!
Ogilvy’s in Montreal has a nice selection of perfume. Old Montreal is fascinating to wander through, but possibly a bit repetitive if you are also going to Quebec City. Definitely have to go to an outdoor cafe and watch the world go by.
Quebec City Le Chateau Fromtenac and go to the boutque and buy the Le Labo Rose 31 body products unless you’re staying there and you can just bring home “souvenirs”.
Congratulations!
If you have time when you are in Quebec City, take a few hours to go on the Île d’Orléans. The Marché du Vieux-Port is also great to buy some yummy products and is closed to a street full of antiques shops.
In Montreal, I’d suggest either Mount Royal or the Ile Ste-Hélène and Ile Notre-Dame (or both!) as nice outdoors activities. Also, there is always something going on in the Quartier des Spectacles, which is downtown and close to Chinatown and the big department stores.
Congratulations on the anniversary!
When in Montreal, check out Etiket boutique for niche perfume and skincare lines. You can browse ahead on their website: etiket.ca
(no affiliation). Her’s a review of the boutique by a perfumista:

If you are interested in Thiery Mugler’s new exclusifs line they are available (exclusively in North America) at the Hudson’s Bay department store (aka The Bay/Baie) in Ottawa or Montreal. (not sure about Quebec City).
Hope you have a wonderful time!
SOTD: Pleasures Intense by Estee Lauder.
This is my favourite version of the fragrance. 🙂
In Lalibela by Memo today.
I had to take a break from sampling this line-now I am back digging into my samples.
I like Lalibela but the price is holding me back. Which Memo have you liked best so far?
I’m wearing Demeter’s Gingerale today. When I first put it on last fall or winter, I didn’t like it quite so much. But it is perfect for a hot Texas summer. I will say that it is the most realistic ginger ale scent. I am now craving ginger ale, which I usually only drink when I am sick.
I usually only drink it with whisky! 🙂 But just reading it is kinda making me want some..
I hate ginger ale – it’s the Sick Drink (as in, I only drink it when I’m sick!). Don’t know why, because ginger BEER is awesome. I think it’s maybe the level of ginger in the stuff; give me looooots of ginger, please.
I have been eyeing that Demeter for at least a couple of years now. I should just go buy one.
Nasomatto Absinth today. I also have Narcotic Venus and Nuda by Nasomatto and bought Absinth blindly based on the description/notes. As much as I love the 2 florals I wear this so much more and just love its cool, sweet green.
As the arvo wore on I wanted more sweet green so topped up with SL Vetiver Oriental.
Today I’m wearing Olene by Diptyque. I love it! Such a dewy, green and lush jasmine, perfect for today’s weather!
Glad you reminded me of Olene. I’ve been meaning to wear it – perfect summer fragrance!
Yes – lovely, realistic fragrance perfect for relaxed days !
SOTD is Diptyque’s Eau Duelle edt. This fragrance just makes me so happy! I’ve not worn it much this year, but my 1.7 oz bottle is nearly half empty! That says a lot considering how many bottles I have. I wore it constantly a few years ago. I’m sure I’ll have to replace this.
I debated between that and Volutes. I like the Volutes but wish I’d gotten the Duelle. They gave me several samples which I finished quickly. I like it better than any others I’ve sampled in that category. Maybe next quarter…
I almost really liked Volutes. If it didn’t have that cigarette ash smell, I’d have been really happy. I need to get a sample of the Eau Duelle edp, which is supposed to be boozier vanilla. I’ll probably like that one too, but I love the zingy juniper quality of the edt in the summer.
Agreed. Volutes is nice, but there are better tobacco scents that don’t have the ash smell.
Fortunately I don’t get any ashes. What I don’t love is it goes a little baby powder-ish on me in the late drydown, and that is especially prominent on clothing.
I have some edp for you if you like… It is kind of boozy…
In a contrary mood as I still have no writing gigs, but a conference call tomorrow will no doubt result in another big project. Not happy when I don’t have work, and not happy when I do… sort of day.
In this impossible to please state, I did a very weird thing, and particularly weird for me. I layered.
Not two, but three frags. AA Flora Nymphea, Vent Vert, and White Linen. It was an instinct sort of thing. Right now I feel wildly successful, which makes me suspicious that I’ll be ruing my ‘artistic’ enthusiasm for the rest of the day.
That’s so cool you layered! I assume from your slight distress that this is your first time? I’m glad you are successful! It’s so much fun to layer!
I usually only layer by accident. But this morning was quite deliberate… so far, still good…
I like that mix! Very nicely done!
Never layered. Never dared. If I had a bucket list I’d add it. You make it sound thrilling, Fresca, not scary. I’ll bet you smell wonderful. I would have had work today, but my Mac picked up a virus
Oakland, maybe your layering success could beget even more artistic enthusiasm? Hope the rest of the day works out for you! I do a lot of writing work too – and sometimes all planets and flower pots and fruit bowls need to be in exactly the right alignment before inspiration comes. Sigh – it’s usually the looming deadline that wrenches it out of me 🙂
Tomorrow I will get another huge assignment that I will struggle with and struggle with… .and then the deadline will loom closer and closer and then finally I will start to write!
Deadlines are the the twisted muses of writers!
With you in spirit, Oakland Fresca. Same career, same perpetual ambivalence.
And same current situation–wrapped up some big year-long projects, now waiting for either the muse (or a client) to pay a visit.
In the meantime, what better distraction than fragrance!
SOTD = Kelly Caleche. Happy and feminine.
BTW, Robin, I love Shaal Nur! I have a few Italian frags – not as many as I’d like – so I’m not sure what I’ll wear on Friday.
It’s a great scent! I have more Italians on my wishlist than in my collection, I think.
Is it still available? It sounds wonderful.
For a second there I thought “isn’t Robin married?” Then I realized you meant Italian fragrances. 😉
Ha!
Oh Robin, I meant to ask… the photo. Are those Liberty shirts? The textiles are great.
Etro shirts! Image is from their FB page, I should have said.
I do love their fashion! And Heliotrope is a fabulous frag from Etro
Gosh their shirts are lovely… but at $300 to $700…. a wee bit spendy…Probably Liberty shirts cost as much these days however.
SOTD for me is Knot. I’m up to 8 sprays of this when I use it.. it really stays close to the body and yet lasts longer with the extra sprays.
Jardins d’Armide–one of my favorites.
Going tomorrow to Officina 189 with a few fumies then lunch in the North End if any Boston area folk want to join us. Italian perfumes followed by Italian food. What could be better? My screen name is my yahoo address if anyone is interested
Enjoy!
That is a great scent 🙂
Crabtree & Evelyn’s Jasmine de Provence.
I’m wearing Black Cashmere today. I usually wear it in autumn, but I just wanted it today for some reason.
Wear it when you want it, I say. Hope it was awesome.
SOTD is EL Azuree Soleil Eau Fraiche Skinscent to celebrate taking a ‘vacation’ day from usual activities and enjoying summer life!
I am in Susan D. Owens Child today for some white (and other) flowers.
Today is a Theorema day. It love it’s citrus candied goodness.
SOTD = Chanel 28 La Pausa
Nice! I feel elegant despite wearing a rather pedestrian Land’s End cotton blend shirt. Something in 28 La Pausa reminds me of something in SSS Yin and Ylang even though these two fragrances are like, no pun intended, Yin and Yang.
You smell beautiful, Land’s End notwithstanding.
I’ve seen so many wearing that one lately and it’s making me itch to get another decant of it.
Yum. Now I’m contemplating The Sample Sea. I know Yin and Ylang is in there. 😉
SOTD is TF Santa Blush from a generous sample I received. I was really in a sandalwood mood today but the TF is so faint on me so I topped it off with SSS Champagne de Bois. Much better 😀
Love TF’s Santal Blush; one of my favorites. It usually lasts all day on me. Then again, I am kind of heavy handed. Lol!
Yeah, I think spraying would be more satisfying.
Santa Blush!How I love typo’s on NST!!hehe!
Ha ha! I didn’t notice that. Sounds a bit creepy, actually.
Wishing I were on vacation… SOTD is Heeley Cocobello for its beachy vibe, worn with a Hawaiian shirt and my favorite travel-themed charm bracelet.
I love this idea!
Tokyo Milk Excess. Gotta love Tokyo Milk!
SOTD is Guerlain Terracotta.
Fabulous in a bottle!!
SOTM just leftover L’Air du Desert Marocain from last night. Probably won’t apply something fresh until post-workout a little later in the morning. Don’t want to suffocate the folks at the gym. 🙂
CdG’s Incense Avignon.
Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere. Love the aldehydes and ylang-ylang in this.
and the sandalwood too. Good choice!
beautiful scent!
Now, THIS one is a “Goldilocks” perfume, definitely. It’s never been wrong for me yet.
SOTD is Knot by BV.
Couldn’t decide … Until I realized I needed roses. The kind of day where I needed a perfume that is just Ugh so pretty. I’m wearing Mille et Une Roses and very satisfied!
MeUR is so lovely!
Went all violets and iris today with Misia.
After my bath last night, I put on some Dana Tabu body lotion. It smelled so pretty, and was still lingering a little bit. I put some more of the body lotion on this morning, and lightly sprayed Tabu over the lotion.
Its actually holding up well in the heat today.
How does one lightly spray Tabu on? I thought one spray had the half life of plutonium. It’s a beautiful fragrance, but my goodness is it strong. I bet the body lotion smells fabulous!
I held my left arm about 8 inches from my right wrist, and sprayed. Then, dabbed my right arm with the scented left wrist.
The body lotion is very pretty. My husband even complimented me on it.
I went with Silences today.
A favorite – my Goldilocks perfume.
🙂
I love Silences, but I don’t think it’s a “Goldilocks” for me. Too demanding of my attention.
Good to see you’re back. 🙂
Womanity. The saltiness really seems to cut through humidity.
Today’s scent is Meteorites by Guerlain. It’s a little warm in SF for this but I love iris, violet and heliotrope. I’m on a binge lately, esp. with violet.
It seems I’ve been wearing Misia by the gallon lately!
You smell good! Meteorites is a favorite of mine. I like Misia, too, have just a decant but recently opened my backup bottle of Meteorites (from back when it was inexpensive). Don’t know what I’ll do when it’s gone!
Thanks Laila! Every now and then, a bottle pops up on amazon or ebay. I’m always on the look out for another!
Lonestar memories. A day of chores and furniture moving and meetings later so I decided to match with none of the above (nor the weather). A tiny spritz from a sample is plenty in this case…
Just an FYI for all you perfume enthusiasts: I watched part 1 of a 3 part BBC doc on perfume that Angela suggested in a comment on the article about Ann S’s (spectacular) perfume collection. Part one was fun to watch and goes back and forth between the House of Guerlain and the process of a Tommy Hilfiger perfume launch. It also features Chandler B who is a total hoot(Dilana’s post about Womanity reminded me of this).
I watched part 1 on You Tube last year but never got around to watching part two. It was really interesting.
What is the name of the documentary?
Bbc perfume documentary part 1 ” Something Old, Something New”
Ugh… That is “BBC”. I can’t type on a tablet …
I am wearing Unforsaken by Kerosene today. An edible coconut Orange Creamsicle scent with a beachy vibe. I didn’t feel well today and wasn’t up to anything too challenging. This is a fun yet comforting scent. Great for the summer.
Hope you’re feeling better and hope the Unforsaken helped! I made the mistake of sampling “challenging” fragrances when I was sick over the holiday. I might have to wait a while before revisiting leathers…
Thanks Elisa, that’s very sweet of you. My idea of leather is Jolie Madame! You were brave sampling leather scents when you were sick.
This is the week of samples.
Monday SOTD – Slumberhouse Kiste. Mmmmm have enough to sample again before making a commitment.
Tuesday SOTD – Ramon Monegal – Umbra…mmmmmm not a bone dry as I anticipated, very wearable all day even in 90+ temps. Kept smelling my arms
Today’s SOTD – Memo – Moon Fever – not so much
Tomorrow SOTD – Timothy Han – She Came to Stay. Well, we shall see is she does or not
Friday SOTD- Bogue -Maai
Finally home from NZ! Mannnn, that trip home is really long (12 hours from Auckland to SF, then 5 hours to Dulles, followed by what should have been a 5-hour drive home but turned into 6 hours by construction delays on I-66 and I-81).
I just spritzed up a cloud of L’arte di Gucci.
Wow! That’s a haul! I could handle that going but it’s a real drag coming back. But you got to do Wednesday twice 🙂 Hope you enjoyed your trip!
Welcome back!
There is no place like home. I hope you enjoyed your trip.
