Wednesday scent of the day 6/17

Posted by Robin on 17 June 2015 190 Comments

Craig Green AW15

Happy Wednesday! If you have a free moment, do tell us what fragrance you're wearing

I'm in Comme des Garçons Calamus, from Series 1: Leaves.

Reminder: this Friday, 6/19, wear a fragrance from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows items from the Craig Green AW15 collection at Comme des Garçons.

It is pouring outside but I am happy because the children are finally getting over their jetlag and did NOT wake me up at 5! Hooray!! SOTD is vintage Vent Vert.

Wearing CB I Hate Perfume Russian Caravan Tea while sipping Mighty Leaf Mountain Spring Jasmine. I’ll never understand why I love jasmine in tea and cocktails, but can’t stand it in perfumes.

The cat seems to have finally caught on that we’re moving this weekend. She’s doing everything that she can to prevent it, mostly by sitting in the boxes I’m trying to pack.

We have a cat that climbs in our suitcases when we’re trying to pack for trips. I’m not sure if she’s trying to prevent us from going or if she wants to come. Good luck with the move!

I think the jasmine used in tea and cocktails is generally less indolic. Could that have something to do with it?

Ooh, jasmine in a cocktail – that sounds divine! I’m normally a “brown” drinker (bourbon or scotch), but I can appreciate a vodka-based cocktail on occasion. Will have to make a suggestion to my friendly household mixologist.

My favourite of their green offerings is Organic Spring Jasmine but Orange Dulce is fantastic as well…..

The only upside to moving with cats – free box inspections and always having someone to hold down the pile of packing paper.

In perfume, jasmine either offends me or bores me. I love jasmine tea, but I haven’t had any in ages. Good luck with the move.

      Hope your move goes smoothly.

I feel similarly about jasmine. I’ve tried several jasmine teas, but wasn’t satisfied with them. I kept trying to find the old two-toned gold tins that used to be so common. Finally today in our Asian import store I found a line in gold & brown boxes – Fooyoo brand. I gambled $7 on it and sure enough it smells (dry, at least) like the same product. Will test tomorrow.

When I was a kid, we drank the inexpensive jasmine tea that came in a yellow tin with gold lettering, I think?

    Fun pic!
I am sampling again – today I am testing ELDO Putain des Palaces. What a weird perfume! It started as dirty powdery floral, where I could not recognise a single note (apart from a bit of leather). A couple of hours later I suddenly smell a pretty honey scent and at first I cannot believe it is coming from me. And a little later I am getting occasional wafts of powdery violet fragrance.

That one is weird. I get sweet rose and violet and a very, very dirty leather/musk. I eventually decided I can’t wear it but I’m glad it exists. I’d like to smell it on a man, I think.

Thanks to hajusuuri and odonata9 for the refreshing summer fragrance suggestions! I got to Sephora last night and though they didn’t have any of the Aqua Allegorias, I did get to try a few of the Atelier Colognes. Wearing my sample of Vetiver Fatal today. This one’s nice. I’m definitely interested in tracking down more of the line.

Sadly, some women hurt the cause. I’ve twice worked with women who have claimed to be taking breaks to pump; one was going out to smoke 2/3s of the time, the other one was just taking plenty of breaks most of which had nothing to do with pumping.

I was involved both times, because I had to cover their desks while they were gone and my work was being affected.

SOTD is Rose Kashan again. I have fallen rather hard for it, very quickly … and just in case it’s one of those that will disappear, unsung, into the sunset a mere two years after its release, I ordered a bottle yesterday. Its notes include cardamom, which seems to lend it the same kind of duskiness that cumin adds to the Gucci EDP from 2002, which I also love.

Oh, this sounds very pretty! How would you describe its sillage and presence?

(And I note that it is available in a 90 mL bottle in Europe. I don’t suppose that’s the one you sprung for? :] )

Nobody here at work has commented, so the sillage must be at least somewhat discreet. I notice a fairly close-to-the-body cloud, and it lasted a good 6 or 7 hours on me yesterday, dabbed (rather lavishly) from a 1ml vial. LuckyScent also has the 90ml bottle available, and since that or another dabber vial was all that was available I DID spring. Ah, impulse. Pretty sure I won’t regret it this time. 🙂

Oh, and if there’s any chance you don’t have a bug spray you can stand, may I offer an unsolicited recommendation for Liquid Net Insect Repellent? (unaffiliated) It is the only natural repellent I’ve found that does any good–and it doesn’t have the awful scent of DEET products. FWIW 🙂

I don’t know how “natural” it is, but I’ve heard that Avon Skin So Soft is a great DEET-free bug repellent. I haven’t tried it – my husband is a bug magnet, so I just bring him and the bugs leave me alone!

By the way, I’m assisting my perfume teacher at her lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (!) this Friday on scent in the Deccan Era of India, and am so excited. I will probably just be handing out scent strips or ribbons, but it doesn’t matter – I’m delighted to be able to be involved.

I just want to add that I have already seen the exhibit, and it is marvelous. I’ve been raving about it to everyone I know IRL, so even if you somehow didn’t care about the scent aspect of it, go for the amazing illuminated manuscripts, blinding diamonds, and stunning textiles.

I’m wearing TDC Aurore Nomade by a certain Bertrand D. it’s supposed to be tropical, but all those spices combine on me in a way that I end up with a really strong coniferous smell. So I get this incongruous image of pirates drinking rum and possibly eating caramelized bananas in an Estonian pine forest. I like it, though.

Since I am off work today, I tried and reviewed La Religieuse and I’m hating it. It’s just generic flowers and laundry musk. No jasmine at all and I love jasmine. I think that getting into the shower and washing this off is a great idea after I hit reply.

I think that either Theorema or Bal will get that horrid stink out of my nose.

I am washing the living room ceiling today in preparation for paint and wearing lots of L’Heure Bleue. In addition to smelling wonderful, I hold the (idiosyncratic and somewhat idiotic) belief that this magical potion can prevent the neck strain that occurs while standing on a ladder, wiping wet rags on the ceiling. Wish me luck!

SOTD is Fragrance Republic 01/06 (fig, lime, vetiver, sandalwood). Goes well with my Hawaiian shirt. And I appreciate that they offer their scents in 15ml bottles.

What do folks think about ordering perfume on line during the summer? This scent arrived on a hot day — the bottle was warm to the touch when I unpacked it. The scent seems fine, but I’m glad it was not a costly purchase. I am wondering if it is unwise to buy scents that arrive via the mail when it’s hot out….

I worry about that, too and try to avoid it. Luckily, it is cooler this week and cloudy in Arkansas from a front and tropical storm Bill, so I don’t have to worry too hard about my order of Sunshine that I expect to arrive on Friday. Otherwise, I do try to wait until cooler weather, as hard as that can be.

I try to have mine sent to my P.O. box, though some businesses insist on home delivery (via UPS or FedEx). But that made me think, what about old fashioned General Delivery? I think the post office still has it. You have the pkg addressed to your name c/o General Delivery, with any post office’s address. The P.O. varies in how long each will hold it, at their discretion, 2 weeks to 30 days. You just check in (or track it) and pick it up. We use this if we travel for an extended period.

I wanted something different today and went into my sample box. I selected Coromandel by Chanel. I remember I was in NM and at the Chanel counter. I ended up purchasing Cristalle and the SA gave me a bunch of samples. So, Coromandel was one of them. This is such a beautiful and sophisticated fragrances.
