Tuesday scent of the day 6/16

Posted by Robin on 16 June 2015 176 Comments

Istanbul, Blue Mosque

Happy Fudge Day! I am unfortunately fresh out of fudge. But do tell us what fragrance you've chosen for today.

I'm wearing a dab of L'Artisan Traversée du Bosphore.

Reminder: this Friday, 6/19, wear a fragrance from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Reminds me that nobody is ever wearing any of the new Mugler scents, the Exceptions.

I actually just got samples of Fougere Furieuse and Chyprissime and have worn the FF quite a bit. I am not sure if it is full bottle worthy but I like it.

I wasn’t up to Harisssa or Avignon this moring–it is sweltering here–so I am wearing CDG Calamus.

I thought about that one! Might wear it tomorrow. Even Traversee is a bit much for our humidity today, my dab is literally just a dab.

I liked it, but it is extremely powerful and long-lasting, a committment for sure. I prefer the limited edition, a completely different animal. 🙂

It’s not powerful in the way that, say, 80s scents were/are powerful. It’s basically a citrusy rose, and I love a citrusy rose.

I liked David Yurman enough – it’s too bad about that strong woody part – but I’m still nursing a few of my deluxe samples and a small decant! I almost bought the dusting powder. It doesn’t out compete my other roses that I love more, but I always thought it was actually a better masculine frag than fem.

I’m wearing Eau d’Italie Magnolia Romana for the first time and I think I like it better than you did back when it was launched (but I’m still in the first hour). It’s not unbearably fresh on me and I think the opening is beautiful. It reminds me a bit of Gucci Envy, a scent I used to love and wear in my pre-perfumista days.

Also, fudge. The nectar of Gods.

I must admit, I don’t know this line well at all. I ordered a sample in search of the perfect magnolia. And although I like the scent well enough, the search is definitely not over.

IMHO the perfect magnolia, so far, is only on the tree in your backyard 😉

I’m also on the lookout for the perfect magnolia (I’ve decided that having a representative bottle of my favorite scents – white flowers, tea, etc…- is the far more attainable goal) and have drawn much the same conclusion. If the two of you haven’t found it perhaps it doesn’t exist… Yet.

SOTD is Boudicca Wode from a sample from the lovely Jovoy Perfumes shop in Paris. I highly recommend this shop of you are able to go – fantastic selection and generous samples! I got a bottle of Volnay Brume d’Hiver for about $165 due to the dollar/euro being in my favor. We stumbled upon a Perfumes Nicolai shop in our travels, and at one of the department stores got to sample many of the scents everyone here talks about! Truly a great trip. The Boudicca Wode is woody, earthy, very interesting.

So curious that Lavs doesn’t last long on you, I can smell it two days on my skin, just a tiny spray, even with showering! Are you sure you have the extrait and not the roomspray?

Unless it was terribly misrepresented I have the extrait. It didn’t last long on me again today, gone in a couple of hours.
I’ve now applied a dose of Acqua di Sale for testing. It isn’t at all what I expected and I didn’t like it much at first – too sweet and clean. My husband asked why I smelled like watermelon. Now, I’m either experiencing some kind of perfume Stockholm Syndrome or it’s calming down a bit.

Today is a grey and windy day, so I decided I could finally sample Brecourt Haram (Farah). It is not as sweet and heavy as I expected – a nice comforting combination of honey, spices and dried fruit, slightly musky. A soft honey scent.

I would recommend Veritas Inlustrat Perfumes but they don’t have an online store…at least I cannot find it. They are high quality and very affordable. They are available to me at local stores.
Are you looking for only essential oil blends? I have worn and liked several from Pacifica fragrances but I am not sure that they use just essential oils (I believe there may be some fragrance oils that are utilized in the eau de parfums).
Also, if you are willing to part with the money, Sonoma Scent Studio has three fragrances in their natural line up that are all quite good.
And April Aromatics…although those bottles are quite pricey as well.
Finally, Providence Perfume Company…I have tried a few and they did not appeal to me but everyone is different so you might want to give that company a try.
Oh, and I forgot, one more…Fiele Fragrances…love them too and they make a nice sampler pack.

Good Tuesday Morning Everyone! Well, down here in Houston, Texas we are experiencing yet more rain again! Tropical Storm Bill is trying to make his way over here and is currently in Galveston, TX. The stores and the gas stations were almost sold out of everything while everyone braces themselves for the worst. Please keep us in your thoughts. Because I have been glued to the television set since I woke up this morning, I have not picked a SOTD. I will probably go with Atelier’s Orange Sanguine. So true, leathermountain! Local and homemade is hard to come by these days! And unfortunately when something takes off greed often takes over and companies lose sight of their original mission and/or are bought out.
Next time I am in my local shops I will see if I can get some more information…..(perhaps it is intentionally being kept under the radar? works out for me as I am not wearing a mass marketed scent!)

Blisteringly hot here – I really have no idea why I was feeling aldehydes this morning and not, say, a citrusy rose or a summery floral. But there it is, I wanted aldehydes. So: Guerlain Vega. Beautiful as No. 5 but less formal. (I mean, it IS aldehydes, so “formal” is relative here.)

Amouage Sunshine, first test. I’ve only had it on for about an hour, but I’m finding the tobacco note to be much more intense than I was expecting. Then again, most Amouages turn into headshop on me, so maybe this is somehow a fitting transition.

Sapphire, I’ve never tried that one, and if it’s similar to Sunshine I’ll pass. Normally I can appreciate a tobacco note, but it was quite assertive for hours on me and by the time the other notes appeared I just felt exhausted.

To me, the similarity lies in the blackcurrant note, but La Vie est Belle is heavy on patchouli in the drydown, whereas Sunshine IS all about the tobacco. Luckily, I like that, but will like it more in fall and winter.

I’m on vacation with extended family in SW Michigan. We rented a beach house and are staying for a week. I packed two of my favorite sunny, spring scents, En Passant and Wit.

And it has poured the entire time we’ve been here. The kids are stir crazy. Hell, I’m stir crazy. And neither of my scents seem to fit the way I wanted them to.

Oh, well! Off to a museum for some indoor fun.

I just have to say it: Congrats to the 2015 Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks! And hats off to the Tampa Bay Lightning, a truly formidable opponent. What a wild ride!

At least the night ended well. After a day of intermittent downpours, flood warnings and weather alerts, a tornado warning – a rarity here – was issued for the county around 5 p.m., just as Cubs fans were gathering in Wrigleyville for the ballgame and Hawks fans were on their way to the United Center in pouring rain. Sirens started going off in Chicago itself and some suburbs, and I started making room in a closet for me and the cats. Then, as suddenly as it was issued, the tornado warning was cancelled but heavy rains and flooding and more storms were predicted for the entire evening. So we cancelled our plans to watch the game at our local watering hole and stayed home to keep one eye on our basement, lest it become a real watering hole as it has in years past. Luckily, we escaped unscathed, but my veggie garden sat in water for hours and part of my herb garden is still flooded.

Today is a gloriously cool and sunny day, windows wide open, a one-day respite before the next 5-day storm cycle begins anew tomorrow. I’m celebrating the day and the championship with Dame Perfumery Desert Rose, its opulence perfect for the sudden cool, dry weather. I don’t get any hairspray note that someone mentioned, just a lush, velvety almost smoky rose at first, then a little jammy, with a delightful geranium note giving it some verve. Long-lasting and only a little is needed.

Watched the third period of last night’s game. They put on a good show, for sure! (Although I must confess that I was rooting for the ‘hawks strictly because I’m a Portland Winterhawks fan, and they have the same jerseys. As good a reason as any, I suppose! 🙂 )

I was completely torn with this line up! I was born and raised in a suburb of Chicago but have lived in the Tampa Bay Area since early ’80s and went to a ton of Lightning games the first couple of years we had a team.

My mother and father’s first date was a Blackhawks game and my mother never let him forget the fact he bought cheap seats! I grew up watching the Blackhawks and was very bitter about their long history of losses.

But I do think the best team won 🙂

Well, then you got to root for both teams! Seriously, the Lightning were an excellent team and I really thought they’d win, and kudos to Bishop, the goalie who played through injury. You’d be surprised then at how Blackhawks fever has swept the city and suburbs in the past decade. There are no longer any ‘cheap seats,’ a standing room only ticket for the finals was well over $1,000 and the wait list for season tickets supposedly numbers 13,000! I went to one game as a kid long ago when there were cheap seats, that’s it. Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita are my heroes, yet I love thus current team, especially its captain.

Someone mentioned Lipstick Rose yesterday, so it is my SOTD today. I think it’s so, so pretty!

I think it’s interesting that folks have called this one a “difficult rose,” when I find it so easy to wear. It isn’t one that I love close up, nose-to-skin, where the cosmetic powder note can overwhelm, but a foot or two out, that gets leveled with the sweet rose and violet. I always feel a bit more glamorous when I wear it.

Polders are roughly 40% of the Netherlands. “A polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments (barriers) known as dikes that forms an artificial hydrological entity, meaning it has no connection with outside water other than through manually operated devices.”

Scent twins! I’m testing L’Artisan Traversée du Bosphore. I carefully dabbed a little bit on this morning, because apple is usually a deal breaker for me, as well as any overly gourmand notes (like nougat), so I was slightly afraid of this one. However, the whole turned out to be more than the sum of its parts here and, although I probably wouldn’t buy it, I find it quite nice and comforting.

Aloha! Just back from vacation in Hawaii. Currently testing Cristalle vs Cristalle Eau Verte, which was kindof a mistake since EV isn’t much like the Real Thing, and is currently getting its lightweight butt kicked in this match-off. Will have to try EV on its own sometimes, with a re-adjusted mindset ignoring the ‘Cristalle’ in its name.

I took several frags to Hawaii but hardly wore them. I found that I didn’t need to wear Bronze Goddess and its ilk when I was already slathered in sunscreen :^) And my fig scents that I like so much in a California summer were a bit heavy in Hawaii’s humidity. Live and learn 🙂

I would only wear Cristalle Eau Verte if I was stranded on a hot train and I hadn’t taken a shower for three days. It cannot compete with the balanced beauty of the original. It smells like the rinse cycle. A good rinse cycle. High end dryer sheet? Very clean indeed.

Interestingly, Cristalle lasts about 10 minutes on me and the Eau Verte version something like 7 hours! I agree that there is not much similarity between them. Personally I love the mild lemon tea that is the Eau Verte, but I know I am in the minority 🙂

Which one, Cuir Venenum or Reem Acra? They’re both pretty different from Seville a l’Aube. CV is mostly leather with orange blossom. The notes also list myrrh and coconut. It can be kind of an oddball. Some people think it smells like beer (I’ve seen Belgian beer mentioned), but I can’t say I really get that association myself, and I love Belgian beer. Reem Acra is a bit more mainstream. It’s orange blossom with amber and patchouli. I tend to wear it more in the fall because it’s kind of a warm and cozy orange blossom.

Azuree is some powerful potion! I remember being at the EL counter a year ago wanting to sample this but not finding a tester. The SA had one hidden behind the counter but kept trying to steer me towards the current offerings instead. When I finally insisted I foolishly over sprayed on my jacket and you could smell me a mile away! Yet, the scent remained on my jacket for weeks and I would secretly sneak to my closet to take whiffs of the jacket sleeve as often as I could without seeming insane…wow! fantastic!

EI is so beautiful! Maybe it’s a summer bedtime scent.

Testing Amouage Sunshine today from a sample vs my purse spray of SSS Tabac Aurea. It’s muggy as heck outside with the fallout from the tropical storm reaching even us in Arkansas, but I’m indoors working from home. I had put on TA last night when I got home for an after work perfume and there was such a strong resemblance to the tobacco note from Sunshine that I had to do a double take (having just ordered Sunshine from a discounter). Love TA (really need to get a FB sometime), but now am not so sure I should have ordered the Sunshine. Will have to bite the bullet and ask my DH what he thinks of it. Luckily, the discounter looks like it has a good return policy. Wondering how some of you who have similar tastes to me (help, Hajusuuri!) have found Sunshine.

Too funny :-). I love Sunshine. The fruity opening needs a little pep but the middle bits and the drydown are vanilla/tobacco heaven to me. SSS Tabac Aurea is more resinous, heavier and the to acco gets equal bllling with amber. For me, Sunshine is for spring, summer and early fall whe TA is for when the days are shorter and a chill is in the air.

It was cool and rainy today, went with Ambre Nuit. I think I will switch this evening to Angelique Noire.
