So yesterday I told you all Happy Iced Tea Day, when what I meant to say was Happy Maurice Sendak's birthday! But I forgot, so I'm telling you a day late. Do put on your wolf suit1 and tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.
I'm wearing a dab of Dior Eau Sauvage in honor of Max.
Reminder: this Friday, 6/12, we're looking at literary connections...name a favorite novel, and wear a perfume that fits the novel or a character in the novel. The summer reading poll will follow on Saturday.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
1. If you've never read Where The Wild Things are, you can find the text here.
Jicky EdT, for comparison with yesterday’s Mouson Lavendel and the day before’s Pour Un Homme de Caron Les Plus Belles Lavandes. My perfume buddy who sent me this Jicky sample says it’s from the 90s. I guess Jicky’s civet must have changed a lot over the years, but I’m guessing that lavender and vanilla have been available pretty consistently.
Jicky is definitely less skanky than it used to be…
Not super skanky, but there’s a touch, most noticeable at the beginning. Maybe I’ve gotten used to it. 🙂
SOTD is Encre Noire Sport. It is the only “sport” frag that I own.
And I still have not tried it. Love EN though.
My partner definitely does not like it 😉 I prefer the classic, but needed something a bit more citrusy today with all the humidity.
I have the original but must admit to preferring the sports version. I think the original is more distinctive though…
A little late but wearing Carven in honor of Madam Carven’s passing
We are both late then 🙂
Just learned that Sir Christopher Lee died today! I wasn’t thinking of him when I put on Iris Silver Mist but it certainly wouldn’t feel out of place in a Lord of the Rings movie. Maybe the scent of a ringwraith…..
Oh, perfect!
RIP Sir Christopher Lee. I also think your scent honors him perfectly.
I think more of Lothlorien when I smell Iris Silver Mist!
Yes, perfect. He always played such interesting characters – often villains, yes, but usually quirky and intelligent ones.
Aw that’s a cute match Robin!
I wore Diptyque Virgilio today, as the winter here has so far been rather balmy and I’ve been craving bracing scents during the day.
Tonight I’m in Kalemat, but I’m wishing i was still in something fresher.
That damage poll waiting around the corner is going to be a killer :-/
I miss Virgilio! And you have a few more weeks to worry about the damage, LOL…
That’s worse! The damage may be greater! LOL!
I found a bottle of Virgilio online…I’d been eyeing it off for a while, and today was just perfect to spritz my decant with abandon so I bought the bottle… It’s fantastic stuff!
Jealous. But not buying one! I am adamant about no more large bottles.
I aspire to your level of willpower Robin 🙂
Ha…if you could see my collection of half used 50 and 100 ml bottles you would not say that! It is too little too late.
Or perhaps too much too soon…?
I really like Virgilio and I passed up a 100ml bottle for $60 at a sample sale in NYC. I left to think about it and when I made up my mind, it was gone. I guess that’s how my collection remains very small.
Whatever works!
Aw, shucks, wish I’d seen this before I sprayed this morning. I’m wearing just about the mildest, non-savage thing I own – Escale a Portofino.
My SOTD is Chanel No. 19. One year ago today was our wonderful trip to Italy. I bought No. 19 in the JFK airport duty free, and wore it throughout most of the trip. It was perfect for the hot weather there.
Whenever I wear this, it instantly brings being on vacation in beautiful Rome, Assissi and Venice to mind. Instant pick me up!
Scent twins! I wore the lovely Wit yesterday and was in the mood for something less overtly floral today.
How great that No. 19 brings you back to your trip to Italy!
Scent triplets! I’m in No 19 edt too – it’s just one of those days when only 19 will do!! If it made me think of Italy, I’d probably wear it even more often!
It bums me out that I can’t conjure associations to perfumes, other than a few childhood memories. In adulthood the best I can do is imagine other places I’d (theoretically) associate with a fragrance. Maybe I just haven’t done anything exciting or memorable in a while…..
Oh, in my 9th day of laryngitis, though it’s improving, so commando so far.
Ugh…that’s a long time. Hope it’s better soon!
Six generous sprays of Jardin Sur le Nil.
I wish you were my co worker!
Didn’t know about Maurice but I used to read this to my younger sister when she was a little girl. It was one of her favourites.
SOTD is Vamp a New York. Not very suitable for monsters or wolves but great nonetheless.
TOTD is the same mixture of green teas as yesterday.
I was just thinking about Vamp á NY a few months ago and couldn’t find it anywhere! I loved that bubblegum tuberose.
I got myself a backup bottle a year ago, as it was dirt-cheap on ebay. Nearly halfway through my first bottle. It’s easily found in Europe though.
After years of intending to buy it, I finally got a bottle of Timbuktu. It’s in the newer packaging and I’d read somewhere that it has been reformulated, so I’m wearing a spray from the new bottle on one wrist and a bit left from my years-old decant on the other to see if I can tell the difference. The newer version seems a little less sharp–less vetiver, possibly? But they’re very close so far. Anyone else have experience with the newer one?
One of my favorite L’Artisan (only behind the ever cool Dzongkha!). I can’t speak to old versus new as my store’s counter doesn’t rotate much. I wish I knew though.
I have old bottle, and a new mini that was in the 2012 coffret. When I got the older one I actually thought it had turned a little because of the mustiness, but the newer one has it too. They seem similar to me after the top notes- the newer one is fresher and zingier
So glad to hear they’re close!
Another Acqua Colonia, this time Blood Orange & Basil.
Ooh, yum! How basil-y is it?
It’s mostly citrus, but there is an herbal note. I prefer Mandarine & Cardamom, because it’s spicier. The Acqua Colonia line as a whole is pretty good. My skin does very well with colognes, and I usually get decent sillage and they last quite a long time. I just wish I could find a source for some of the more recent releases. They have Lime & Nutmeg, Hazel & Tonka, Honey & Plum and several others. Unfortunately these are much more difficult to find in the States.
Not sure if they have the ones you are looking for but fragrancenet has several of these for a ridiculously low amount of money (5.7 oz for under twenty five dollars!). I am sorely tempted to try a few!
Thank you for introducing me to Max. We need more wild things.
I am wearing PdN Weekend (a Deauville), which is not wild but not tame either. I am exploring PdN, and I find Weekend a beauty that is very wearable in summer. It reminds me of Cristalle, and Eau du Sud, but it is calmer. Lovely.
What other PdN’s have you tried? There is a Dutch e-tailer that sells part of the line and will do samples, perhaps you have found her already.
I have tried Odalisque, which I also find very beautiful, more so than Weekend, but I don’t have a gap in my collection where it would fit now. Temps d’une Fete I have a sample of, and I will try it when I have gotten rid of this stubborn flue (Weekend goes well with the flue). Then I have a few samples of various Eaux (Chic, Folie and another one, alas not d’Ete=dc).
If there are ones you suggest I try, please let me know! I got the samples via Maria. End of June I will have work obligations in Amsterdam, then there maybe time to go over to Annindraya.
I adore New York and Sacrebleu. I haven’t tried their Intense versions. Both her vanilla’s are good, Tonka especially. Rose Pivoine is a pretty scent and I also like Cedrat Intense. Mind you, I’m more familiar with her older scents than with all the latest Intense fragrances. And Kiss me Tender merits a try as well. And just get better!
It’s a fantastic book…not the same without the pictures though.
The pictures are gorgeous.
Anything that smells like a close relation of Cristalle or Eau de Sud sounds like a good choice!
🙂
SOTD is Amouage Dia Man, which is pretty wild with all its vetiver and labdanum.
Caron Parfum Sacree, older bottle of Edp. This is skankier on first application than the wonderful sample of vintage extrait, but it mellows to the same soothing smooth floral with incense on top of amber that smells so good to me.
I found Guerlain’s Vol de Nuit last night. Was on a to shelf at Nordstrom, next to Samsara parfum and Shalimar. Got a sample, spritzed when i got home, fell in love. Le Sigh.
Definitely need to get a decant of this Lil Lady!
Also, i tried the Samara parfum. It was gorgeous, but Samsara isn’t me so that was enough for me for awhile. 🙂
If it’s an older one in the black and gold zig zag pattern box, you should snap it up and consider yourself lucky. The pre-reform Vol de Nuit is marvellous!!!
Oooo – thanks for the tip! I’m going to investigate this on my way home.
Oh, thanks Robin! This is one of my favorite books of all time! Just seeing the photo brought a delighted smile to my face.
SOTD is Cuir de Russie. Sadly, I don’t get anything animalic out of it like many others do. I only used one spritz, and poof! it’s gone after two hours.
Mine too…I can still recite most of it by heart.
I read it in Dutch but I remember very well how my sister would quote certain phrases, and as she was only about 3 years old it was really cute.
Cuir de Russie isn’t animalic on me either, but I love it regardless. I’d describe it as soapy saddle leather, although I’m not sure it’s an actual thing. You need to spray more!
Yes, I will next time! I’d never worn this out in the heat and I was concerned it might suddenly bloom into a beast or a barnyard and I’d be hot, sweaty, stinky and plagued by flies.
Coincidentally I am wearing Mechant Loup. I couldn’t decide what to wear and grabbed something from the sample pile.
Perfect coincidence!
I’m a big fan of Sendak! Saw an exhibit of his work at the Jewish Museum a few years ago. I learned more about his personal life which changed the way I saw his stories and drawings. Very moving. And my SOTD is Iris Poudre in this hot and humid day here.
Would have loved to have seen that…
Random sample of the day is Ivory Route from Xerjoff’s Join the Club line. A nice vanilla but nothing so special that I need a full bottle
I was wearing Baiser Vole edp, but did not feel it was enough on this freezing day. When I saw this post I went to a shop to apply Kenzo’s Jungle. In the past it has made me a little queasy, but today it is perfect – and even the bottle design works perfectly with the book!
SOTD is Poivre Samarcande. Love it and and think it’s time to add it to my Hermessance gift set plan…
I’m wearing California Reverie and feeling shocked that it’s June and I’ve tried almost no new releases this year :/
SotD is from a sample of Bijan Wicked. It’s zingy, flowery, a bit mysterious, but not scary at all.
Max makes me smile every time. I read his story faithfully and loved it as a child, but when my own “wild things” arrived, they had little patience for story time, and they make their own wild rumpus most days. Sigh. Such is life.
I also love Sendak’s “Chicken Soup with Rice.” Adorable. He really liked his food hot. 🙂
I am humming the Carole King version right now (and then I’ll start on One Was Johnny).
I used to play that record (that’s what I mean) over and over and over again!
Honestly have not heard it in years and it still runs through my mind every so often. Loved the Nutshell Library books too. My sisters and I still say “So the lion ate Pierre” when someone says “I don’t care”.
🙂
No wolf suit for me today, although I, too, loved the book.
Cooler, somewhat rainy weather had me reach for somethng green today, the classic Ivoire de Balmain. Another scent with more notes than could possibly be listed – suffice it to say green! floral chypre – Ivoire is a beautiful young blonde woman, cool, elegant, slightly aloof but not unaware of her whispering sensuality, dressed in a silk taffeta evening gown, a la Grace Kelly. While none of those adjectives describe me (at all!) – and I’m currently dressed in gardening attire ready to weed the herb garden – I love her still. Looking forward to enjoying each delicious phase as it slowly descends to its lovely oakmossy drydown, as I brush against oregano, thyme, savory, tarragon, rosemary . . .
An amusing post on vintage Ivoire…..and you smell fabulous!!!
http://thefragrantman.com/2013/04/27/ivoire-de-balmain-the-little-perfume-devil-on-my-shoulder/
That was delightful, thank you! And, oh, those Balmain evening gowns accompanying the article, how beautiful are they?
Wearing Womanity as I did yesterday, still love it.
Good! I’ve never even tried it. Probably because I really dislike the bottle. Silly, I know.
I love his work! Nothing wild about my scent today – just sweet and simple Philosophy Falling in Love. I guess blackberries can be wild!
Sendak is the best! I like a lot of children’s literature anyway (Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, anyone?) but his stories were special.
I read that LVMH is discontinuing (again) their Fendi scents so I’m wearing Theorema today.
Wearing Naked Honey today, which sounds at least a little Wild…
Today I’m wearing In Jardin en Medditerene – sorry for the horrible spelling 😉
I am an excellent speller, but have to look that one up every time 😉
Diptique Philosykos for me today, making me think of Nikos Kazantzakis and his incredible body of work including The Last Temptation of Christ, Zorba the Greek and my favorite, his memoir Report to Greco. Something about the thoughtful composition of this fragrance seems very existential to me.
Because I am in the hospital and had surgery, I don’t have any fragrance on. But, I did spray some Chloe on to my hair brush when I did my hair and can still smell it. Hopefully I will be able to go home tomorrow or Saturday. Keeping fingers crossed.
Oh dear, hope you are recovered very soon!
Glad you’re ok. Hope you can go home soon!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Wishing you a speedy recovery. Very clever idea with your hair brush!
Fingers crossed and sending positive vibes that all is well soon!
We’re spritzing for you….. Feel better soon.
SOTD was Adp Iris Nobile. It doesn’t last long on me. After the Iris perfumes article, I’m thinking of giving Infusion d’Iris another shot, maybe the men’s version.
I have a question for all you lovely people! Has anyone used the soaps from Hermes? I was thinking about getting my friend a set of the Jardin sur le Nil soaps for her wedding gift, but I just wanted to make sure they were worth the rather high price tag. She loves the perfume, and I also don’t know how true to the perfume the soaps are. Thank you in advance!
I have never tried them but was terribly tempted to purchase the box of three. I love the fact that you can customize the box with choice of fragrance and soap wrappers (which appear to be replicas of the Hermes scarves…someone correct me if I am inaccurate in my assumption). Soap is always a wonderful and useful gift…even if she herself does not care for them they would surely make lovely guest soaps, right?
The packaging is absolutely gorgeous as you say! That also tempted me to buy them 🙂 But they come out to ~$21 per soap I think, which is too much for me to buy for myself. Definitely okay for a present though.
That’s what friends are for… to receive gifts you won’t buy for yourself. 🙂
Exactly! 🙂
Wearing TMT by Pacifica doctored up with a hefty dose of Australian Sandalwood….gives it more lasting power.
Musc Ravageur in keeping with the wild beast theme.
Testing Jour d’Hermes from a vial (so dabbed on) today, and I really need to stick my nose on my arm to smell it…
Haven’t been wearing much scent so as not to traumatize the kittens any more than necessary (not to mention that with no air conditioning it’s just too hot) but this morning we had a long drive to the vet so I indulged in a touch of Korrigan. Now that w’ere home, I wish I had chosen something a bit more refreshing in the heat.
Had to shower again. Now it’s Chanel’s Pour Monsieur. Lemon powder reminds me so strongly of something, but what is it? Another perfume?
Geranim Pour Monsieur, which some how I can imagine Max wearing when he grows up.
It would also be suitable for the rather formal lion who comes to visit another stubborn Sendal hero. (Pierre, the boy who “does not care”)
And another shower, followed by The Different Company Bergamote. This weather will really make a dent in my citrus sample box!
You are on a sampling spree! How fun!
