Monday scent of the day 6/8

Posted by Robin on 8 June 2015 128 Comments

garden bench

Gah, another Monday. If you have a free minute, do tell us your fragrance of the day.

I have a doctor appointment today so am commando so far.

Reminder: this Friday, 6/12, we're looking at literary connections...name a favorite novel, and wear a perfume that fits the novel or a character in the novel. The summer reading poll will follow on Saturday.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Grabbed my Eau Sauvage instead of my Diorella on my mad dash out the door to class! They are in identical decant bottles. Still a great fragrance but I’m craving a raspy chypre this morning.

I’m commando this morning. Wore Lyric all weekend so I don’t feel deprived and I just couldn’t decide this morning. I have a sample/decant order coming today and know I will want to try stuff this evening so I’m gonna (im)patiently wait.

Well, the status went from “out for delivery” to “delayed” and now says its in Georgia :/ Methinks someone screwed up. We are now going to have to stay here long enough to get my package tomorrow so it doesn’t have to bake in the Texas sun all week. I hope it doesn’t turn into one of those 7pm deliveries.

Finished a Atelier Cologne ‘Sous le toit de Paris’, but it was far to little in the vial and fleeting, so in addition smeared my arms with Lush’s ‘The smell of weather turning’ solid perfume.

Figured the weather is turning in the UK (finally) that marking it is obligatory.

And now I’m at my computer at work listening to old videos of Jewel, of course whilst working (ahem). I wonder if the fragrance – a little hippy-ish – is making me crave her music…

I wore colognes this weekend, since it was so warm here in East Texas – into the mid 90s. Today I wanted something different and I found my mini of Marni at the bottom of my perfume basket.

SOTD is Premier Figuier Extreme. I’ve wasted massive amounts of mental energy trying to decide if I like PFE or Philosykos more. Finally gave Philosykos the edge, but I definitely reach for PFE more in the summer. It’s so soft and creamy and coconutty. Love it!

Penhaligon Blenheim Bouquet. It is very austere and works as an olfactory backbone when I need to get things Done. It must’ve worn off though since I meandered away to the perfume counter when I was running errands. I came across a 30ml bottle of Amber Ylang Ylang on half-price and not a gallon of frigid British eau de cologne could have stopped me. At least it’s a tiny bottle! May it encourage me to continue with the day’s chores!

Oriental Express. There is a sort of “fresh” or astringent note—maybe the basil?—that seems stronger than I’ve noticed before. It’s nice on a foggy, muggy morning.

Drained the last drops in my sample of Rose Ikebana. This one has grown on me, but I don’t think I would buy a 100ml bottle. Maybe I could participate in a future split and get a cute 15ml? :) Or I could remain happy with my bottle of Stella, when I want a citrusy rose…

Fils de Dieu for 4 or 5 days in a row now. It was a blind buy, but I found it on sale at Anthropologie, and I’d been wanting to try it. Plus, I’ve been obsessing over coconut lemongrass soup lately, so I couldn’t help myself. This is by far my most successful blind buy; I like it more every time I wear it (and I’m wearing a lot of it today).

I really liked this one on paper… not so much on my skin, but that is par for the course with me and Estee Lauders. They just go WRONG on me, sadly. (I refuse to buy them if I can’t wear them on skin. But they do stay gorgeous for a long time on fabric.)

Me, too. I love to sniff the Estee Lauder testers, but there is something in them that goes off in the wrong direction when I spray on skin. Except the old, old Youth Dew, which I used to filch from my grandmother’s dressing table. Good thing the world isn’t hurting for fragrance choices. :D

This is the first day in a week of taking my older son to various medical appointments – he’s okay, but he has pectus excavatus that has been getting more pronounced over the last couple of years, and we’re going to try to get it treated this summer. Which involves surgery to insert a metal bar through the rib cage to push out the malformed bone(s). But before I can even call to schedule the consultation, at a hospital 5 hours’ drive from us specializing in this kind of treatment, we have to have tests done. What he’s got left: an MRI, an EKG, and metal patch allergy testing, which involves three (!) separate office visits at an allergist 2.5 hours’ drive from home. GRR.

SO. I needed pretty, but backbone. Could have gone with Cuir de Lancome, but I decided on my tiny decant of 1932 instead – it has a drydown that reminds me somewhat of 31 Rue Cambon, while being considerably lighter and more cheerful up top.

Thanks for the encouragement! We have to get all the tests done, and then schedule the consult with the surgery also scheduled tentatively; we’ll stay in a hotel when we do that. I just hope we can get it done before band camp starts in August. They say recovery from the surgery will take 10-14 days. Poor Gaze is low brass captain, and he’ll have RESPONSIBILITIES. Ack.

A lot of people were underwhelmed with 1932. Although it’s pretty fleeting, I was smitten with the lovely topnotes and the wispy, 31RC-Lite drydown. But then I tend to get on well with Chanels in general, and I think that makes a difference.

I live on the in San Diego where there really aren’t any lilacs, but the landlord of our place planted one that supposedly will live in our dry climate. It has never produced more than 1 or 2 sad sprigs of flowers in the past 2-3 years, but something happened this year and while it isn’t anything like a “real” lilac, it has enough blooms for me to cut 1 or 2 sprigs to bring in the house. They smell like the real thing , so that’s good enough! Just brought one in last night.

A warm day here and couldn’t decide what to wear, so went with AG Chevrefeuille since I have a big honking bottle of it now. Such a happy fragrance to perk me up on Monday morning after a really nice weekend.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

I nebbe-doused this morning. This is now my go to fragrance when the weather report is all over the place.

At a meeting in a small room earlier today, someone’s perfume smelled really good so I asked what she was wearing and she said it was one of the Juicy Couture perfumes. I suspect ot is Viva La Juicy because of the soft vanilla note. This goes to show that on the right person, mainstream fragrances that many perfumistas dismiss can and do smell nice.

I was wearing Viva La Juicy a lot before I fell down the rabbit hole. Still wear it occasionally when the weather is nice.

It sounds like it would do well multi-season except perhaps for the coldest days.

I really like the parfum of the original Juicy Couture (they sell it in smell 5ml dabber bottles, laminated on cards, at my drugstore! for $13 apiece!). It’s a bit like Mary Greenwell Plum, but with a very quiet, sweet woody drydown instead of Plum’s tiny-slice-of-chypre base. The edp is VERY watermelony if you ask me, but the parfum isn’t – which is probably why it got a decent review in P:TG.

I gave a away mine for a good cause but I actually may have another travel spray tucked away somewhere…if not, to the drugstore I go!

Strange Invisible Perfumes Emerald Moss, it’s perfect for somewhat hot (comparatively, for Washington DC), hazy weather. I was going to save it for special occasions, but I feel I will end up wearing it very often this summer.

Here in northern Sweden the weather has been quite miserable for the last weeks- four times the normal amount of rain and no sign of summer. Today it’s slightly warmer 13 degrees celsius :-(

I’ve just got back from Barcelona, so tired. Because of an aircontrollers’ stricke, we had to come back sooner than planned, so my exploring/shopping time was cut short. But I managed to visit the perfume museum in the morning (it’s nice and quaint and small and totally un-curated) and buy some perfume from the fragrance shop that’s in the same building. I had made up my mind to come back with a local scent, so I did what I always forbid others to do and bought two bottles after trying them on skin only for 30 minutes or so: Carrner Barcelona El Born and Ramon Monegal Cuirelle. Let’s hope for the best…

My SOTD is Santal Blush by Tom Ford. I haven’t worn this one in a while (I guess I am trying to save the little bit I have left). It is one of those unique fragrances that should probably be worn on special occasions. Hope everyone has a great week!

I wore Balalaika today, a vintage sample. Another odd duck from Lucien Lelong! This one is white satin gardenia flecked with violet powder, walking barefoot along a forest path, eventually stopping in a place known for assignations, where spilled champagne and other happy residues mingle. I can’t believe the idea for this is over 70 years old. It wears like the latest niche storyteller scent. Another one that’s not easy to wear, but what a fun ride when you do! I would love to know what people made of this in the 40s, 50s, etc.
