Thursday scent of the day 5/14

Posted by Robin on 14 May 2015 120 Comments

Nina Ricci Spring 2013

Happy Thursday! What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Nina Ricci L'Extase, which is apparently "an incandescently modest fragrance with a genuinely erotic signature".

Reminder: tomorrow will be Fake Flanker Friday — wear a perfume that doesn't have a flanker but should, and tell us what the flanker should be called and what it should smell like.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

It was TDC Sel de Vetiver in the morning, which I love, but it seems awfully fleeting, maybe it’s because I have an ancient sample.
I decided to give DelRae Panache another try now and it’s beautiful and comfortable, just perhaps more suited to colder weather.
I have no idea what to wear tomorrow, so I’ll probably just go with whatever suits my mood.

I can’t think of anything either. Pondering my collection, there’s nothing that needs a flanker or that doesn’t already have one – or that isn’t one!

I love Sel de Vetiver and it lasts pretty well on me (not necessarily the case with most fragrances). So maybe indeed time for a new sample?

Hello! Spent a week in Florida, where it was too hot for nearly all the scents I brought with me so I only wore YSL Cinema. My mother gave me an ancient bottle of Coco Mademoiselle but I haven’t had a Chance to test it yet. How funny that spell check just capitalized “Chance;” it must recognize all Chanel fragrences! ;-)
Back home in much more reasonable temps so SOTD a is CdG Kyoto. Happy Thursday!

Chanel No 5 extrait de parfum.
Last spring I asked you all if I should purchase the beautiful iconic bottle or the classy refillable purse spray. I bought the bottle and I’m very happy to own it. However, I found I wasn’t wearing the perfume very often. Recently I decanted it into a (good quality) spray atomizer. Much better! I’m reaching for it more often. It only takes one spritz! Beautiful.

Oh my goodness, bet that is stunning, both the bottle and the scent! Some perfumes just smell better spritzed.

True, ringthing. In this case I get the entire orchestration of the perfume over time–and over more skin :) I was missing a lot when I just dabbed.

Is anyone else as annoyed as I am with the recent proliferation of a raspy, perhaps synthetic, cedar note that is popping up everywhere? Anyone who loves a Serge Lutens with cedar is sure to have noticed that Feminite du Bois has had noticeable tweaking in the wood part. Poor dear, she has had work and I find it not good. I know many of us become sensitive to certain notes in perfume but my increasing awareness of this one little beast has ruined many things for me. I get this same note in Serge Noire and in Pharrell Girl. I also detected it in Jour d’Hermes. I understand IFRA was a game changer for the entire industry but I still hope and wish for better cedar!

P.S. Now I will choose a fragrance without wood. Issey Miyake A Scent will do nicely.

I’m afraid of cedar for exactly this reason! (I like the real thing, though.) I’ve also slowly developed a nervousness about incense notes. Though I adore it sometimes, other interpretations of it literally choke me.

That might explain why Girl was so odd to me at first spray (but I do rather enjoy the drydown).

I’ve encountered this raspiness in a few of SL’s perfumes, which makes me sad, because I fell in love early on with the whole “stewed fruits/spices/odd random notes” weirdness that is Serge. Feminite had the raspiness, as did Fille En Aiguilles and a couple of others. These days, my wearing of Serge Lutens is usually confined to Douce Amere, Chypre Rouge and Ambre Sultan.

Now my question is do you find it ” incandescent, modest and having a genuinely erotic signature”?

My SOTD is the delightfully cheerful Vanilia by L’Artisan.

“Enjoy it with a sunburn, a banana float and really loud music. There will always be time for refinement later.”

One of my favourite quotes from The Guide.

So many great quotes in that book. When I first read it, I remember thinking “Oh no! I hate Angel, I hate Tommy Girl. There must be something wrong with my nose!” Now I just reread it sometimes for the hilariously snarky reviews.

SOTD is Vetiver Extraordinaire, inspired by the Indelible Cologne review. It is a bit masculine, but perfect for working in the garden and walking the dog, or other outdoorsy activities, and very vetiver.
I still smell Mon Parfum Cherie Par Camille which I wore last night, as a lovely plum/patchouli faintly in the background beneath all this vetiver. And I did shower this morning! This is one lasting Goutal, and I love it more and more.

I had a super fun fragrant night that carried over into this morning. I got some goodies from some wonderful fairies and my order from STC came in yesterday too so I spent my evening covered in good smells. On my left arm is Margiela’s Replica Lazy Sunday, which was a lovely bedtime fragrance, especially in the dry down. And on my right arm there are still some traces of Sel de Vetiver.

Today though, it is cool and rainy, so I went with La Fille de Berlin. It really suits this weather for me. The kind where you want to lay in bed all day with some tea and a book, but are forced by goodness knows what to go to work, and need a nice pick me up. But one with an edge that is a little depressing and can commiserate with you over not being home in bed.

As for tomorrow, I’ve been trying to come up with a clever idea off and on for a week already, and I’m drawing a blank. I might not quite follow the theme and instead wear a scent that has a flanker, but not the flanker I want.

I’d been meaning to mention this….in the Santa Fe Whole Foods I found Now brand essential oil, 1 oz, of actual santalum album 14% in grapeseed oil, $20. Didn’t think this was even available anymore. Definitely smells like the real deal, if weak. Oddly, the Metairie Whole Foods (outside NOLA) didn’t seem to carry it, so it may be regional. Thought it would be good for layering.

SOTD is Vol de Nuit. It is going to be in the high 50s/low 60s today and the sky isn’t sunny but isn’t overcast either. -It’s just kind of light gray all over. I’m taking advantage before it gets too hot. I’m quite pleased with my choice. VdN is just working really well today.

I am wearing Chypre Mousse today–still love it, still need a FB, and I’m usually not a fan of green fragrances, or chypres, either. But this one has just got something unusual going on.

Today I am wearing Jeffrey Dame’s “Dark Horse”.
Although I really like Mexican Vanilla and Desert Rose, I think it is my favorite from his line.

That might actually be a full bottle father’s day present this year (deciding between that and Herb Man). I bought my mother the Passionfruit, Orange Blossom and Vetiver (unsniffed) and she adores it.

My favourite is the Cassis, Rose and Sandalwood…. a jammy rose to my nose. I also really like the Mate, Heliotrope and Patchouli ( a very nuanced patchouli).

It is fun. I can be so exciting – that someone notices and asks. A few years ago one of my co-workers complimented my Cristalle edp. I was like yeah! It’s so nice. I think she was a little surprised when I whipped out a small decant I’d had in my handbag for touch ups. I just gave it to her to try.

Outstanding vanilla, sweet as can be but with enough burnt bits to prevent it from being cloying. LOVE!

Wearing the original Agent Provacateur today. Had to run out spur of the moment and do a bunch of errands so I was worried I had oversprayed, but everyone I crossed paths with had a big smile for me, go figure! This one worries me because it is so unusual compared to mainstream perfumes, but I actually rarely have a bad reaction. Woohoo!

Wearing Seville a L’Aube today, from a sample I had forgotten I had until I found it while rooting through my samples to put together a package for someone.

I was feeling a bit iffy about my choice earlier this morning, going between liking it and then getting whiffs of a candy-in-tablet-form (think necco wafers or smarties) note that I had never gotten before from this one. That starchy sweet note has gone away now, and I like it much better.

SOTD Coromandel. At first I thought it vanished too quickly, but I’m still getting an aura of it which seems stronger than when I put my nose to my wrist. Very nice…might be FB-worthy, since I don’t know of any economy versions…

Oh! Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights is the downmarket ringer for Coromandel! I have a bottle of FN that I wear from time to time. It’s missing that rich rose at the opening of Coromandel, but it has all the other spices, chocolate, foody, patchouli parts. It’s also dirt cheap.

Wonderful! I haven’t been visiting much lately and just came upon this. I am still smitten with bis and have gone through half a bottle in less than two months. I just love it! Reminds me of Dolly’s lyric in 9 to 5 about pouring yourself a cup of ambition. I spritz on my ambition, and bis keeps me in the game.
Holly, I am glad to hear you like it!

Serendipity! You never know what you can spark by a casual comment on a perfume blog! Your comment that day has enabled me to commence letting of things that aren’t absolutely right for me. I remind myself of Goldilocks. :)
Bis is lovely and if I had a bottle, I would spritz with abandon, too. I presently have just an eensie LuckyScent sample. Sigh …

I’m in Marni today. I have a few sprays left in my travel bottle (the one that came with the doll). I have mixed feelings about this one, which probably points to overthinking it. So today I’m experimenting with Not Thinking About It, and we’re doing just fine! Go figure!

Also, I love, love, love the design of the bigger bottles.

Scent of the day is vintage Caron Parfum Sacre EDP, courtesy of a lovely NSTer who sent me fabulous samples, of which this is the first I tried. Simply lovely. I made the mistake of reading about the joys of the discontinued extrait, but I see some EDP white label bottles, as opposed to the newer and lesser purple label bottles, available, so this is going on my to buy list. So many fragrances, so skin time available…LOL!

CdG Avignon today… very nice and subtle. Had to laugh as my boss had a meeting with a woman who showed up reeking of some fruitchouli scent (flowerbomb, la vie est belle, something like that). After she left he said he was totally repulsed by it and could I please spray something nice in his office to get rid of the stench. LOL :-)

I spritzed a bit of Il Profumo Amour and that managed to make it bearable for him.
