Thursday scent of the day 4/23

Posted by Robin on 23 April 2015 179 Comments

wings

Almost to Friday! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I'm in Annick Goutal Folavril. Tea at the moment: Bao Zhong Royale oolong from American Tea Room.

Reminder: this Friday, 24 April, wear something from Annick Goutal or perfumer Isabelle Doyen.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve seen a lot of complaints about it out in the community, it doesn’t seem to be getting a lot of love. It is more sublime than I had imagined, and I certainly don’t think it is a more extreme version of Noir, rather a different scent altogether.

Me too. I have a bottle of Noir edp which is great but has longevity issues. Is extreme same but.. extreme?

This stays close to the skin for several hours, at least on me, with 3-4 sprays. I applied it last night before going to bed, and I could still detect it when I got up.
I think extreme is a misnomer for this scent. I wasn’t in love with either the EDP or EDT versions of Noir, but I am liking this version a lot more than them.

It is almost Friday. I am looking forward to the weekend.
I gave away my bottle of AG matin, so I get zero points for today.
I am wearing Fate today, I ordered this bottle off a discount website and it smells a bit off to me. Could be a number of things.
Tea today is MF Eros, a fruity floral black tea “for lovers” the container says. Very good for this chilly morning!

I had a sample vial of SL Fleurs d’Oranger lying around so I thought I’d try it and see if I liked it any better. I don’t hate it, and I can tell it’s well made, but it just doesn’t do anything for me. The only orange-blossom I’ve ever genuinely liked was L’Artisan Seville à L’Aube, and I don’t even like that sufficiently to buy a bottle because I’d never wear it enough to make it worth owning.

I don’t usually like orange blossom either – it goes lathery creamy soap on me, usually – and the two you mention are the only ones, along with By Kilian Sweet Redemption, that don’t smell soapy on my skin. I pick up a lot of tuberose in the Serge, though.

Maybe that’s the problem! Tuberose and I are not great friends, with the one exception of vintage Poison, and there the tuberose was pretty much drowned in a sea of other eighties notes like grapey damascones and opoponax.

Right! Poison used to suffocate me back in the day, even though I love tuberose, and it was probably all the dark fruits and orientalish stuff in there that bothered me. I can wear it now. (In dabs.)

My experience with orange blossom is very similar. The three you mention are more-or-less the only ones I like and the Lutens is the only orange blossom I love. And I’m pretty sure it’s because of the tuberose.

Continuing AG week with Le Jasmin, which is more my speed than the other samples I’ve tried this week. Drained my sample of Mandragore last night because it was nice but not my thing.

I’m wondering if I’d like this line more as EDPs – all of my samples except Vanille Exquise are EDTs. I still have at least half a dozen more to get through to see if there is anything I love enough for a FB down the line!

Aside from the “eaus” in the AG line that are fine as edt, I prefer the edps. They seem to hold up in the floral stages better. Its too bad that AG mostly distrubutes the edts in the US.

Ah, I didn’t realize about the distribution, I’m in Canada so I’ve just been throwing in a few samples with my discounter website orders 🙂 I do feel like I’m missing a certain lushness and depth that I can imagine. I love big perfumes so the EDTs were already at a disadvantage!

Le Mimosa didn’t work for me. I don’t remember what I didn’t like about it though. But it was immediately a big NO. Almost scrubber NO. I do like mimosa fragrances, but this one goes in a different direction than regular mimosa powdery frags.

I’ve never tried either Mimosaique or Mimosa pour moi, so I cannot comment as to how mimosa normally translates into fine fragrance. But Le Mimosa smells very different to the mimosa soaps I often buy in France. I also seem to remember from the reviews that it isn’t a typical mimosa soliflore.
I really enjoy it for what it is, a nice summery floral. It has quite prominent fruity notes and I seem to remember that Victoria of BdJ found the rose notes a tad sharp, so that might explain your instant dislike.

I might have liked Le Mimosa but found it difficult to smell, in the same way I find Mûre et Musc difficult to smell, just on the edge of my osmic perception. The PdN is the opposite, very dense and powdery to my nose.

I’m excited to get our dining room table today! It’s a custom made farmhouse style table. We’ve had chairs since the move on Saturday, but now we’ll have a proper table. I just need to find a good side-board for the room now. More furniture shopping will be happening this weekend. I cleared out all our empty boxes and packing materials last night and now the house looks empty again!

JHaG Lady Vengeance is my SotD. It’s tenacious and easy, which fits my needs today. I am having a rough week- Friday night can’t come soon enough, though I am not sure if I’ll be able to “turn it off” after I leave the office, and I have much to do before the day is through.

My tea of the moment is a blackcurrant tisane.

I’m a firm believer in letting a “higher power” babysit work/client stuff while I am not at work. If a client is having an issue that isn’t resolved or even at a good stopping point by the end of the session, I ask their higher power to take care of it for them. If I didn’t do these little mind rituals I would be a basket case.

I tried quite a few of the JHAG perfumes and Lady Vengeance was my favorite! You smell great.

Early this morning I applied Petite Cherie on one wrist and Ce Soir ou Jamais on the other. They are both extraordinarily similar
to my nose. Unfortunately these pretty yet ephemeral scents lasted less than an hour. I am currently wearing one spray of Jo Malone Red Roses and two sprays of Nectarine Blossom & Honey on each wrist. At the three hour mark this blend is still going strong.
I have become smitten with linden blssom as a note having recently discovered my love for Jo malone’s French Lime Blossom. Could anyone please recommend linden dominant fragrances that might be similar?

There is a great list of linden based fragrances on the “notes” page at fragrantica though. I don’t want to rec something to you that is hard to find! Sorry.

Oh, yeah, I remembered one I really like that is NOT discontinued, lol. It’s the De Ma Mere by Shelley Kyle, which falls into that mimosa/linden category. It is very pretty and very wearable. I discovered this a few years ago at a local soap shop, and really like it. It has descent longevity. There’s a good review of it on eaumg….

It’s one of those fragrances that is pretty 50/50 linden mimosa so it’s really fresh and powdery, but they both help prop each other up. It’s very green and fresh.

I’m also wracking my brains: another one that I think has a linden/mimosa accord that is still around is the “Coach” edt fragrance. It gets a little soapy, but still pretty and summery.

Thank you, AnnS! I perused fragrantica and yes, there are several lime blossom scents that are now discontinued…the L’Occitane was very popular and it is gone. The D”Orsay is available at a reasonable price at amazon. Yet, I am apprehensive about purchasing a bottle unsniffed. I know that I like the Jo Malone so perhaps I will treat myself to a bottle of that. I haven’t tried L”Artisan’s Le Chasse Aux Pappilion which I read had linden. Is it dominant or just playing a supporting role?

IMHO, I think Chasse is more of a soft pastel mix of white flowers. I actually don’t care for it, but that’s just me. If you are looking for that super fresh linden thing, it is not in Chasse. But you may like it anyway. It’s a very popular fragrance.

I think you are right in not buying unsiffed. Get the FLB that you really like. None of the fragrances mentioned above smell like it, so fair warning. FLB has a bit of a citrus eau de cologne aspect, and a lot of the others that are mentioned are linden/mimosa, or linden/white flowers, so there going to be all over the place. It will be a fun note to explore!

Yes. The French Lime Blossom has citrus and a tad bit of sweetness along with the soft, powdery aspect of the linden. It smells to me of very expensive soap and it lasts forever on my skin. However, I will continue to explore other linden blossom options.

Glad to hear your tactic worked! Possibly all of LA should get out there with buckets and sponges – they have tons of cars. 🙂

I also find that taking a lipstick tube in hand at a stoplight never fails to make the light turn green. In case anyone was looking for THAT magic spell.

I’m wearing Un Matin d’Orage today, continuing on with the AG samples. At first it is a gardenia bomb, but it settled down quickly. I’m not sure it’s going to last on my skin. We’ll see. Yesterday, Songes lasted very well. I could still smell it on my way home from work.

I find Matin d’Orage pretty light – maybe three hours’ worth of wear until I spray madly, and then maybe four hours. Songes is long-lasting on me, though.

Last night, I sprayed on some Un Matin d’Orage right before bedtime. This morning, when I was working out (free weights and eliptical) I would catch little blasts of it every now and then. It really is pretty!!

Still doing the Goutal sampling week, with Quel Amour! On me, it reminds me of Lutens La Fille de Berlin, – floral red fruit juiciness – but wih the rose swapped for another flower (I think it’s peony an geranium, according to Fragrantica), and the red fruit part played by pomegranate instead of raspberry. Nice presence too!

P.S.: yesterday’s Mon Parfum Cheri par Camille (ridiculously long name!) turned out to be amazingly long-lasting, especially on my clothes!

It’s a grey and stormy day here but I’m not complaining because we need the rain. My dog is belly up on the couch snoring for all she’s worth. She knows how to handle rainy days 😉

SOTD is Bvlgari Omnia (lé original) which is perfectly soothing, comforting, and refreshing.

Cursing the snow that is on the ground because we haven’t had much of a spring so far. But no SOTD yet because I’m gazing at my sealed vintage no 19 extract. I’ve dated it to late ’70’s/early ’80’s. Now I am wondering when Chanel went from just 7ml to 7.5ml with their extracts. I can tell this is vintage because the current formulations I own and the vintage versions are a yellow. I will say that Chanel vintages hold up well and still smell mostly like the current formulation.

It was the only Goutal sample I could find – I know I have a lot more, but my samples have gotten officially out of control and I couldn’t find anything else! Tomorrow I will have to wear Mandragore, my only Goutal bottle.

Just said goodbye to a dear friend and family member last weekend. He chose to die at home, so we were able to spend his last day with him.

I’ve been hanging out with his long-term partner this week and yesterday she told me that he didn’t like scent so she never wore it. But now that he is gone, she wants to start wearing perfume. I don’t have a ton of stuff, but offered to let her sample what I do have to find something she really likes. This was the family member who put a bottle of vintage Yardley lavender that belonged to her mother in my stocking last Christmas.

Last night I pulled out a bottle that I thought was going to be Imperial Opoponax and it turned out to be Patchouli Antique. I sprayed it on and wow! It is so beautiful. Maybe it is the warmer weather, but I smell much more pipe tabacco in it.

I have one more client this afternoon (the sniffy guy) so may put on something with wood notes. It’s still a little cold for Fragonard Santal, but I may do Indochine or even Dzing! Somehow the weather has turned a bit cold again.

Thank you. He went really quickly, but there was still time to get him home. He was conscious and aware of what was happening up to a day before his death and surrounded by loving friends and family on his last day. The last thing I said to him while he was still conscious was “it was great hanging out with you” and he replied “it was great hanging out with you too”. I guess I meant that it was great hanging out with him in the ICU for a few hours just then, but later realized that it had a broader meaning.

Iris Poudre is my favorite iris at the moment, along with Scent of Hope and VC&A Bois d’Iris. What other iris scents do you love? ( I wore Iris Silver Mist to bed last night, and I think it helped me sleep soundly, but it is too sweet to me really to wear in the day time….)

Five that I absolutely love are Iris Silver Mist, Iris Nazarena, Rue Cambon, No 19 and Dior Homme. La Pausa and VC&A Bois d’Iris come very close, but the first doesn’t last at all and the second is too faint for my preferences (maybe I should just spray more). I also like Hermes Hiris, The Different Company’s Bois d’Iris and OJ Orris Noir. I’m sure I’ve forgotten something…

And I believe you’re the first person ever I’ve seen saying that ISM is too sweet 🙂

PS Actually enjoying the drydown of Iris Poudre quite a lot.

I think hajusuuri says that the drydown of Iris Poudre is perfect. Vc&a Bois d’Iris was my favorite until I did a side by side comparison, and IP’s drydown won all the way. I have most of the rest you mention on my samples to acquire list. If you had to pick just one which would you pick today?

If you have not tried Rue Cambon, I would go with that. It’s not a ‘pure’ iris, but then again, neither is Iris Poudre. It’s extremely well made and while some say it’s aloof, I think it’s just polished and beautiful. I’ve worn it a lot lately and not getting tired at all.

I’m with ya. Even though I do get momentary whiffs of goodness, overall it’s a mess (on me, at least).

I actually find it smells more like my vintage Shalimar than the current formulation does..

This seems to be shaping up as the Week of Neglected Perfumes for me, so I’m wearing Bottega Veneta today.

I would have worn BV today if I wasn’t trying to do AG most of the week. It’s such a great go-to fragrance, and it’s chilly today.

Confessing to Donatella in advance of the 2Q damage poll — I bought Mandarine Glaciale AND Sud Magnolia last week, taking advantage of my 15% off Sephora coupon!

Second day this week for Encens Mythique. This week I have to remind myself that if it weren’t for my job I wouldn’t be able to buy perfume at all, much less Guerlain’s fancier offerings…

Ombre Indigo for me today – was feeling indecisive and very tired this morning, but it worked out well.

AnnieA, one of my coworkers used to have a sign taped up over her desk that said, «Remind me again how lucky I am to have this job.» Sometimes it’s hard to feel grateful – the last 2 weeks have been like that for me to. I want to sleep all weekend to recover.

I wore 1 spritz of 24 Faubourg and 2 spritzes of Flora Nymphea today. All gone after 3 hours.

    SOTD = AG Ambre Fetiche

It sure was cold enough to wear amber. I have a small decant from a swap (thanks U.) and it was my first time wearing it. Not sure of the appropriate dose, I wore 3 sprays which is probably equivalent to 2 light sprays from a bottle. Nice! It reminded me of MPG Ambre Precieux and, to a lesser extent, Dior Mitzah. It is definitely FBW at a discount.

My SOTD yesterday was Le Labo Iris 39.

Id love a fb of AF, but it’s rather difficult to find 🙁
I hope AG re-release the Orientalists

Enjoying AG Eau d’Hadrien today thanks to a super generous NST swapper. I keep sniffing and sniffing and asking myself what is underneath all the lemon that is familiar? . . . something a bit dusty and green, maybe it’s hay?

I agree, there is something unique about Eau d’Hadrien. According to the notes it has cypress – maybe that’s it?

That must be it. There are cypress trees in my neighborhood, and they have a dusty, green smell, especially when the wind blows through them.

Despite my plans to focus on AG this week, I could not resist L’AP Seville a l’aube today, perfect for our cool spell.
