Monday scent of the day 4/13

Posted by Robin on 13 April 2015 180 Comments

Cire Trudon matches

Another weekend flew by, and it's Monday again! What fragrance are you wearing?

It will be a testing day for me, but I haven't started yet so I'm still commando. I am burning some rose Papier d'Armenie to see if I can clear the smell of the weekend's bacon out of the house.

Reminder: this Friday, 4/17, will be Dealer's Choice: propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are Cire Trudon matches. I think these are scented too.

Keeping it simple…Dame Perfumery Peach Blossom, Violet and vanilla paired with the Pawling Trading Company’s Haiku Tea ( a delicate white nuanced with peach). My two full bottles from Dane arrived on Saturday….my favorite of the two (Dark Horse) was swiftly confiscated by a family member who declared it was to be her signature scent but I was welcome to spray from time to time…LOL!
    Enjoy the day, all!

I received my small sizes of BFMV, Desert Rose, and Dark Horse on Saturday, and I think each would layer nicely with the other. As woody/spicy scents are my favorite, I did especially like Dark Horse with its cinnamon note as a fall fragrance. No one will get that one from me!

How did you like the peach/violet/vanilla? I like all of those notes. I have several samples of his edt’s, but not that one, haven’t tried any of them yet.

Honestly, I now have samples of all and I like all and really love some…..the one I am wearing today starts off with a big blast of peach (reminds me a bit of the Jo Malone Peach blossom and Honey) segues into parma violets (and other florals) and then a nice sweet drydown…. I completely agree that they layer nicely…I have layered Dark Horse with BFMV and will consider layering Desert Rose with BFMV. So far my full bottle contenders are BFMV, Dark Horse (those two I now own …well, sort of if your read above !), Passionfruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver and Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli (maybe in the fall I will purchase the latter two). But, surprisingly I also like HerbMan! Must be the oakmoss that I smell….enjoy your samples, Laila!

Oh, sounds good! Thanks, I’ll let you know my thoughts when I’m in the mood to sample. I have too many FB’s patiently waiting their turn in the spring rotation, and I’m trying to focus on them.

Decided it was time to switch to another genre so I’m going to do Ambers this week. Ambre Sultan to begin with. The first Lutens I purchased. Have a great Monday everyone!

Have you ever tried HdP 1734? It’s one of the driest ambers I’ve ever tried. Mind you, I’m very fond of the genre and my tolerance for sweet is very high, in perfume that is, not in food.

Those are the most stylish matches I’ve ever seen. I wonder if you can buy them wherever you buy the candles, or if they are a harder to find item. Not that the candles are the easy to find, or easy on the wallet! Still deciding what to wear today. It’s my day off, so I feel like I should go big on this wet grey day and wear Cuir Ottoman. Question: tomorrow is a big party for the volunteers at the shelter I work at. I’ll be attending as staff, and was thinking of wearing Jour d’Hermes. Nobody could possibly be offended by that, could they?

Easy to find, I know Beautyhabit has them, and probably anyplace that carries Cire Trudon. Would love to know if the scent really accomplishes anything, but they’re pretty in any case!

      And gosh, would think not.

That sounds like a great choice because it’s light and fresh. It’s the sort of thing I tend to wear on any occasion when I might encounter antiperfumists. If anyone ever did take exception, I would blame it on shampoo. 😉

I did a three mile walk with a friend at 7am (so humid I started sweating as soon as I got out of the a/c!) and then got home and blasted myself with 2 wonderfully bracing sprays of Corsica Furiosa from a small decant. Ahhhh!

No, not at all. A subtle warm vanilla with a cooling bit of his incense-y base. Not sticky, sweet, or wet- more of a dry light vanilla/incense/spice that can be worn any season, IMO. Definitely unisex, if any of the men reading are interested. I would say if you like LDDM, you will also like this, as they share some of the same DNA.

I’ve sniffed LDDM, but that’s about it. I remember I got a huge walloping amber and decided to keep looking. I thiiiink it was kind of a medicinal amber, but that’s stretching my memory a bit.

I’m still all about sandalwood … Today is Tam Dao, EDP. I notice more of the pencil shavings aspect to this one compared to the EDT, but the EDT just doesn’t last on me 🙁

I’m wearing Coty L’origan today. I wore it last night also. It reminds me so much of my grandmother. She’d smell so nice when she was wearing this.

I know the bottle I bought 2 years ago is not the same quality as what she wore. Hers lasted a lot longer, and I remember it being more complex. But its still pretty.

I love L’Origan, it says ‘fall’ to me. My bottle isn’t vintage but still smells good. A friend of a friend wore this in HS as her signature scent, and I always think of Judy when I wear this, although I haven’t seen her in years.

I think I agree on that. My impression of Shem-el-Nessim (woefully positive) was, “this is what I thought L’Heure Bleue was going to smell like.” Big fan of L’Origan.

Finally felt in the mood for something else than the safest of choices so brought out JHAG Miss Charming. I am trying to decide if it is straight up “pretty” or too much “girly frilly pretty”. The jury is still out.

I like Miss Charming – it’s a more nuanced Stella. I never got a bottle, but it is very pretty. It is definitely pretty. I don’t normally like frilly, but our thresholds may be different – it does get a bit sweet.

When I replace my French Lilac I will keep your advice in mind – thank you! I have the EDT; I don’t usually like roller balls (I prefer to spray with abandon) but it does sound like the best option in this case.

Is it the spray or the solid? What I love about the Pacifica solids is, you keep them handy and when they start to wane, which they do, you just slap some more on. I have the coconut and the vanilla for that very reason.

Some of the Pacificas fragrances come in three formats: edp spray, solid and “perfume” roll on…I find the solids have the least longevity and the roll-on the most….

I’m doing a Mystery Caron week (the mystery being the vintage) for no reason other than I have a bunch of decants that are just sitting there. Today it’s En Avion extrait, and I’d have to guess it’s a post-eighties reformulation because it’s a bit flat — doesn’t have the volume I’d expect from a classically constructed scent. It’s nice, though, lots of carnation and I think some orange-flower on a soft oriental background. The top notes seem to have vanished, assuming they were there to begin with.

Marc Maron has a great bit about that transitional moment when you’ve packed up everything but the big furniture, and you look around your house and think–wait why don’t I live like this all the time?? What even is all that junk?? Maybe I shouldn’t move after all, this place is nice now that all my stuff is gone.

When we moved to CA from DC, I left a bunch of stuff in their boxes. When we moved the next time, to what is hopefully our home forever, I just chucked out the boxes without even opening then… goodness knows what I tossed (not photos or letters–I’m careful about those!)

Love seeing these “moving” stories. I’m with you, Jenkr, CH, elamo and Oakland F! I am only occasionally delurking here because of THE BIG MOVE from Kenya back to South Africa – which is just taking weeks and weeks of my life — but there IS the occasional forgotten gem to disover. Seems like I am also simultaneously merging several eras of my life (old abandoned storage/new things bought in Kenya, boyfriend’s clutter – sorry, that’s what it is!). Yes, the best feeling is the release after a trip from the dump. Hey, the only thing getting in the way of being a minimalist is …. all the stuff! Wearing Lust 25:43 – sticky lemon

I totally get that. I recently read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying up by Marie Kondo and got rid of a LOT of stuff. It was perfect timing for just before our move, but even as I was packing I thought: wait, why am I keeping this? I might need to do some purging.

Went for my morning walk today to my local wildlife reserve just down the road. It’s a little piece of fenced bushland in the middle of an ugly suburb with nothing but tranquility, and kangaroos 🙂
Except, it’s been locked up!! Big chains and massive padlocks across the gates, with the Shire’s logo on them 🙁 Devastated! Then their website kept freezing on me so i couldnt phone to ask what the hell was going on. Not happy 🙁
So I wore the nice but nothing special Diptyque Eau de Lierre for a walk down random streets, and cheered myself with Aesop Geranium shower gel and body balm, and Mito VdE for work after.

I was trying to break up my relentless rose obsession, and sprayed some of my sandalwoods (Santal Carmin and Chanel’s Box of Eels), but despite my love for them, they are just too powerful for today. But I don’t want to scrub them off – too wasteful. So instead I’m laughing at myself for my profoundly first world dilemma.

Dad is doing my taxes for the first time in probably, oh, 25 years. With the farm and investments and stuff, it just got really complicated – certainly more complicated than when Dad checked over my 1040EZ from my early employments!

Totally random!!! The other day when I got cold feet about wearing White Diamonds, you mentioned the parfum. I only have the edt… it is evocative of the first floor of Hink’s, a department store that went out of business in downtown Berkeley about 40 years ago (okay, I WAS a kid then 🙂 )… I bought it on a whim, cheap, off eBay, but haven’t mustered the courage to wear it yet.

There is something old-school and serious about White Diamonds… plus it has this animalic note that sometimes pops out and, er, frightens the horses. I think the parfum is smoother maybe? Less diffusive, anyway.

I managed to catch the SAs at the local L’Occitane when they were unpacking the Iris Bleu & Iris Blanc and promptly proceeded to spray it all over myself. Unfortunately, I’m underwhelmed. Not that it’s actively bad or unpleasant, it’s nice enough, just uninspired. Maybe it’s me, but I have to make an effort to smell the iris, it’s all nondescript fruits followed by nondescript flowers followed by nondescript woody musc. Give it a go, but if you like iris, I doubt it’s for you. And Infusion d’Iris is available for a similar price…
PS I of course bought the shower gel regardless of all this complaining.

I rather enjoyed the lotion! I think it will be quite a nice layering fragrance but not something I will spend serious money on. I got my (400ml bottle) of Infusion for a little more than what they are charging for Iris Bleu et Blanc. My favourite of the Grasse collection is still the vanille narcisse. EdC was my first AG and I love it in the spring. It’s a real shape-shifter on me. Sometimes the black currant is more noticeable, sometimes the flowers, and sometimes the cocoa. And I like to layer it with different lotions in any of those notes to enhance them. Lasts a long time on me and the drydown is lovely. Hope you enjoy it!

SOTD is EL Private Collection, which goes perfectly with spring. I’m on my way home from a whirlwind trip to see Wolf Hall (both parts). If you’re a fan of the books and will be in NYC before it closes (in July, I think), go see it. The plays are very engaging and at times funnier than the books.

I am wearing Aramis Perfume Calligraphy Rose, which to me, smells almost exactly like that rose Papier d’Armenie you’re burning. I never thought I would willingly apply an Aramis scent to my body, but I smelled this on a 1/2-off sale table in a shop (think it is being phased out) and fell in a swoon. Didn’t buy it, but managed an even better bargain on eBay. And I’m happy I did.

I bought some Kusmi Petrushka tea at the Hillwood Estate gift shop on Saturday. It’s a blend of China teas with scents of almond, rose, vanilla, orange and spices, which sounds great, right? Oddly, just sniffing the cellophane-wrapped tea in the tin, my brain is interpreting this as a salad with basil, tomatoes and baby spinach. I hope it turns out differently when I brew it! 😉

You never know, it might be the greatest flavouring of tea all together.

I guess tomato-basil-spinach flavored tea would make an interesting soup base for soba noodles. 😉

I actually have a tomato mint tea (as with fragrance, the weirder the combination of flavors, the easier it is to talk me into it!). And it’s definitely pretty weird, but I’m still charmed by it, and it does work well for flavoring light sauces.

Is this also more about tomato leaf or fruit? Just curious all of a sudden.

The tea is tomato-fruit, but very light. Definitely not a soup on its own.

That is pretty weird, and does sound pretty fascinating!

Eleebelle, that does sound interesting. Mint is a sweeter scent, and, actually, little yellow grape tomatoes make a wonderful jam, so I can see the combination working for tea.

As usual, my mind went blank when suddenly faced with the options, and I could not remember which ones you and NST commenters had enjoyed. I’ll let you know how it turns out!
