Thursday scent of the day 3/26

Posted by Robin on 26 March 2015 175 Comments

red fruits

Do share your fragrance of the day if you have a free moment! And don't forget our Lush giveaway is still open.

I'm wearing Byredo Pulp.

Reminder: tomorrow is Figgy Friday: wear a fig perfume, if you dare. I know some of you won't dare, so partial credit for other dried fruit notes.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Most of Monday’s snow is gone, but it’s gray, raw, damp, ugh. A spritz of Chamade to add some cheer.

“Very warm” meaning finally not freezing?! :P

I remember pining, PINING I say!, for a warm, sunny spring day when I lived in Minnesota. I don’t remember being able to rely on them until May, which just seems cruel.

Yeah – that’s it here. It won’t be warm until the first week of May. I was just saying to my hubbie the other day that I am sick of this and maybe we should move. Of course, he always wants to move back to PDX!

Let me know if we need to make room for you! ;)

We’ve had a week of on-again-off-again showers, but currently, the sun is shining and I see blue skies out the window. Not warm, yet, but it promises that it *might* be later!

Ha! It’s actually supposed to be in the mid 60s. Not bad. But useless with no sun.

A very grey and wet day here today. Still continuing with my Amouage exploration; Journey Woman, I like it, I think but I’m very glad it’s not swoon at first sniff like Beloved.

Amouage Gold, I also really like Ubar and Beloved. Lyric was a little too busy to figure out in a single wearing of it, and Epic didn’t make that much of an impression. Journey I like ok, but find the opening rather iffy.

Memoir is my fav, but I also like Dia very much. Not enough to buy a bottle, but if one fell into my hands, that would be a different story. If Lyric had a tad less honey, it would be one of my fav roses. Beloved is just gorgeous! I’ve never smelled Journey though.

Gosh, sounds like I need to remember to resniff Beloved next time I’m at Our Lady! I don’t have any memory of it at all. . . And I have big love for my Memoir, Lyric and Ubar!

          • Lovestosmellgood says:
            26 March 2015 at 11:26 am

I have the sample box of from Amouage. I think it has about 12 fragrances. I also have samples of Sunshine & Fate.
Journey I own a full bottle of -I happen to love the opening the dry down is just fab. I find it sexy and classy.
One thing I have found while testing them is that the scent changes a bit. It could just be my hormones or the seasons changing but curious to know if anyone has had a similar experience? One time I tested Epic and it was huge and strong, the next day (it was a bit warmer ie not freezing) I was piling it on like a cologne.
Amouage its my favorite house-it is a bit expensive but you can shop around discount websites.

          • Marjorie Rose says:
            26 March 2015 at 11:44 am

L-Do I find that the scents change? Yes, absolutely! I love this aspect of the three Amouage scents I own. (Although I find Lyric less of a chameleon than her sisters.) I have also found, especially with Ubar, that dabbing vs. spraying give me very different experiences. I know that some people find Memoir difficult because it can change so much–and apparently not to their liking!–but I just find sometimes it’s boozier and sometimes it’s more leather; sometimes it’s HUGE and sometimes, while not maybe small, LESS huge. :)

          • austenfan says:
            26 March 2015 at 11:48 am

I forgot to get a sample of Memoir, but that can and will be remedied. It’s a chypre isn’t it?

Oddly enough I’m not particularly fond of Dia, in my mind it always reads as “less successful version of Gold”. And I tend to really like what JCE does. I find it a tad heavy somehow.

          • AnnS says:
            26 March 2015 at 1:00 pm

The few Amouage I’ve tested all kind of change over time. It keeps things interesting!

Getting my fig on early – wearing Atelier Figuier Ardent. It’s good, I like the cardamom and woods. Reminds me of Marine Epice but with fig instead of vetiver. AND they sell a travel spray! I am definitely getting a fig perfume for this spring and summer, not sure if it will be this or Philosykos.

Oh, and the sales person at Sephora who got me the Figuier Ardent sample told me about how she doesn’t like the rollerballs because they crush the perfume :? I didn’t correct her, maybe I should have?

Farouche, it’s impossible, and yet, sometimes the misconceptions are just crazy-making! My favorite one to bite my tongue for is the notion that a quality (ie. expensive) perfume has more natural ingredients, and either will therefore a) last LONGER, and/or b) NOT change on you (which is apparently a desirable thing). I’ve heard this one a few times, in variation, and don’t even know where to begin. . .

        • rose pepper says:
          26 March 2015 at 12:18 pm

          Hah! Natural lasts longer ;)

I also think it’s funny when they tell me there is no difference between edt and edp except lasting power. Like they’re thinking I’m cheap for wanting the edt (which I prefer sometimes, for example Chanel Cristalle)

The one with Ivy and lily of the valley interested me for I was looking for a fragrance similar to Eau de Camille (which has ivy and seringa as notes). I already have a FB of Pomegranate Noir so that is one from the collection I am familiar with.

Robin, we must live in the same area because the weather is the same here. Although the rain will probably make it feel much cooler than the expected warm temps today.
Also, you brave soul. Pulp was a disaster on me and smelled like bad BO. The grapefruit was so sour and fig notes don’t like me much either.

I’m wearing Opus II today. More manly than the others in the Library collection – a typical fougere, but with a fruity twist.

I’m continuing to explore samples and decants that I haven’t touched yet. Today was A Dozen Roses Shakespeare in Love. This one is a generic floral musk on my skin, no roses present. I didn’t expect a rose soliflore, but I did expect some rose. I should have worn either Demeter’s Pruning Shears or Rose Anonyme, two of my favorite roses.

That’s my impression thus far too, but I feel like I’m missing something because of the degree to which other people have gotten excited about them. But again, haven’t tried the extraits, so maybe that’s the issue.

    Hi Robin,
I wore Byredo Pulp yesterday. So, we are scent twins who were seperated at birth. LOL!
My SOTD is Slumberhouse Pear and Olive. Love this fragrance. I wish it were a bit stronger. I got a sample from STC the other day. I have only used it today and I have almost completely drained it. (heavy hands)
I hope everyone has a happy “Friday Eve”!

I found that Pear + Olive had excellent longevity and sillage but have always sprayed it from the bottle. Perhaps dabbing or small tester sprays is the problem? It’s one that I actually became too paranoid to wear it to work because the hygenist kept commenting that the entire office smelled like my perfume and she could smell me from her operatory. She meant it as a compliment but still…

It’s Testing THursday for me: Houbigant Apercu on one wrist, AG Nuit Etoilee on the other. Really not enjoying the NE, though I admit I was not expecting to.

Apercu, on the other hand (literally!) is nice. I have a vague memory of trying it before, but I think maybe I lost my original sample. It’s a gentle chypre which I found too dry for me last time around (maybe five years ago?), but it’s just really pretty at the moment.

I’m basking in the joy of a (relatively) liberal spray of my new FB of Seville a l’Aube! I think I could alternate between this and Maroc pour Elle for a long time and be satisfied. With an occasional day of Iris Poudre. And an occasional LOTV day, although I have not chosen a champion LOTV scent yet. And then of course the Black Flower Mexican Vanilla which my husband now asks me to wear, but then I would want a day of Spirituese Double Vanilla, for all those flowers, which reminds me of Noontide Petals, and Attrape Coeur and Mohur Extrait…oh, dear! How did this happen? LOL…but today, Seville a l’Aube! Mmmmm!

The shipping can make a difference…I was going to order a bottle of Fig Tree from SSS for the late spring and when I went to calculate the shipping it came to thirteen dollars which seemed kind of high for a sixty dollar bottle (that was the only thing I was ordering).

FYI, the New York Times Well blog today is highlighting a “Habit Personality Quiz” developed by Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project and Better Than Before. The quiz was interesting and easy to take. But the reason I’m mentioning this here is that Ms. Rubin’s website offers a series of podcasts on building “happier habits into your life, and podcast #5 is “Stop and Smell the Happy.” The blog notes that the unconventional perfumer she mentions is Christopher Brosius, and shows a photo of her Shrine to Smell.

So far today, I’m just contemplating traces of perfumes I sampled yesterday – old Lanvin Pretexte extrait, Amouage Dia, and LesNez Marron Chic. The disadvantage of Marron Chic is that it’s such a delicious-smelling fragrance that it prompts me to look for some kind of sweet treat to eat.

Vintage Le Dix edt… Maybe too liberally applied. This is a scent that makes me feel like I am wearing someone else’s perfume, but that can be fun too occasionally. I am also home with my still sick little one. Yesterday I had to take him, sick, to the doc for a battery of booster vaccines. His immune system is shot from years of treatment for brain cancer and his docs are super worried about him picking up measles or chicken pox. He really struggled with whooping cough two years ago, even though he had been vaccinated. I’ve been entertaining him by sprinkling cat nip on my bedspread and watching our CFKAK (cat formally known as kitten) go nuts!

It’s cozy – I’m bad at describing notes, but saffron was listed and I do notice it, along with general woodiness. What I like is that the drydown doesn’t get cheap, as happens too often in mass-market perfumes. It seems to have replaced the now-too-faint Parfumerie Generale PG06 L’Eau Rare Matale, even though it’s not very similar, for my cozy-blanket winter scent. If TJMaxx does the crazy $17 perfume pricing that sister company Winners does in Canada, I’d say it’s worth a try…

Still home sick. Feeling a little better, but my throat is still an inflamed mess. So I had to cancel my clients for most of the week. Some of them are quite elderly and I don’t want them to catch this.

Feeling a little bit guilty about perfume indulgences. I was really really good for most of the first quarter, but then along came some good prices on Coach Leatherware and I had to get #2 for my husband. Then came the swap and although I was happy to offload a few misfits and trade for non perfume stuff, I still ended up with four more bottles of perfume which I am totally thrilled to be receiving. Three of them were on my wishlist and the fourth is an unsniffed. And now I’m about to get some Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. Am I being a greedy pig?

SOTD is Dzing! which I read somewhere reminds a reviewer of “elephant butt”, but in an adorable way. It is mingling with a trace of LDDM from yesterday’s shirt. On me, the dry down of Dzing! is creamy vanilla with a hint of crayola and book dust.

Continuing with the figs, today i’m in Au Pays’ Figue Fruitee. I’m not at all sure about this one. The initial blast is SWEET, but thankfully that calms down quickly. Then it is very fruity, and even shampoo-like. But at the same time, it has this quality that reminds me so much of summer camp–one week a year, my day camp would do a sleepaway thing, and this perfume smells like the smell of the cabins (musty, humid, wood) with lots of fruit. It is a very juvenile smell. And then a few hours later, the fruit turns over-ripe. I tested it last night, and I’m giving it a shot today, but I have a feeling this tester might be up for grabs.

Oh, I have a scent-related gripe to share (with the only people I know who might sympathise!). My facial lotion, which used to be unscented, or at least innocuously scented, now has this odd “fresh” scent to it–like a pale version of watermelon gum! Ugh! Thankfully, it goes away almost immediately, but I nearly gack every morning while I put it on. :(

I’m testing a set of samples I just received from Perfumes by Terri. Today it’s Douceur Brulee, which is a heavily gourmand (unsurprising, given the name), sweet (again, same) mix of caramel, beeswax, coconut, and lemon. Definitely on the edible side of gourmand – it’s kind of making me hungry. I’ve taken a quick sniff of the sampler set, and many of them seem to land solidly in gourmand territory. Not a bad thing, since I do love the genre. Anybody else have experience with this line? I’ve got to say, the pricing alone makes me want to buy six bottles.

I’m so late, the party’s over and the lights are out, but I’ll post anyway. I’m smelling great today in Vetiver Tonka. Something about the temperature or humidity or something is bringing out all the best in it. Love me some Vetiver Tonka!
