Tuesday scent of the day 3/17

Posted by Robin on 17 March 2015 154 Comments

Happy St Patrick's Day vintage postcard

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?

I'm wearing green... Providence Perfume Co Branch & Vine.

Reminder: this Friday, 20 March, we're doing Nouveau Niche...wear a perfume from a new (2010+) niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Continuing with my gorgeous Ineke sampler I am wearing Balmy Days and Sundays…..leafy greens, grass and chypre accents…perfect for the season of “unlocking” and St Patrick’s Day…It reminds me so much of my original bottle of Grass circa 1994 which was so much better than the re-issue of 2008.

I am sorry I never smelled the original Gap Grass…the later version I smelled was a huge disappointment.

The original was incredible ( a great drydown). The reissue was thin and cucumbery to my nose.

All the original Gap scents were pretty incredible except Heaven. I adored Grass and Earth so so much. I miss them.

I miss them all (including OM and Heaven). Heaven, actually, seemed to have been reformulated as well….I remember the original having an incense vibe in the drydown. I still love it,though, and it is a great go-to scent to wear to work or around those who don’t like fragrance. Every single time I wear it I get compliments.

I liked Dream and Heaven, and gave some Earth to my boyfriend at the time to wear. My brother wore Grass.

and I know I am going to sound like a broken record and drive everyone crazy but the prices were unbelievable when they first came out…..4 oz of EDT for under fifteen dollars! Not bad!

Just needed something easy today so some Burberry Brit Rhythm layered over Ylang-Ylang EO. Showing my Irish by breathing, there is no denying it, wearing my handmade ribbon rosette with all the colors of the Irish flag. Like so many, my Irish heritage includes ancestors of contradictory political persuasions!

My SOTD is Pink Molecule by Zarkoperfume — barely sweet elderflowers and apricots. It has good longevity for something this light. It really does smell like the various elderflower beverages that I have tried.

Oh, St. Germain! I love the taste, the smell, and even the bottle. It would be lovely to find a fragrance that captures its delicacy. I’d never even thought to seek one out bc I assumed it would be too fleeting to ‘work’.

Yes, I love the taste, smell and bottle of St. Germaiin, too! You can find photos on-line of lamps thst people have made from the bottles.

I went for a short walk several hours after I applied Pink Molecule, and my body heat re-released the fragrance. You can get samples from Indie Scents.

Yeah, I hate the name 🙂 Fortunately, I was able to get past my intial visceral reaction to the name and the silly description of the heart being ripped out (no middle notes). Anyway, if you like elderflower liqueur or elderflower lemonade, it’s worth a sniff.

I woke in a fit of allergy misery this morning and was not up to any challenge so the SOTD is Santal Carmin.

Stopped by the pharmacy before work and luckily I’m feeling much better. Only downside is the medicine jacks me up with nervous energy so I’ll have to limit my coffee consumption while I’m on this stuff.

Good! Just what I need – something else to become obsessed about! 😉 I still have sheets, pillowcases and hankies crocheted by my grandmother back in the ’60s!

            But now you’ve inspired me!

        • AnnS says:
          17 March 2015 at 3:27 pm

I can knit squares and rectangles. I get too distracted to count stitches to do anything more interesting. But it’s still fun. I have 4 different scarfs I am working on for the past 6 years, lol! I’m still working on the baby blanket for my daughter who is now 7. Maybe someday I’ll finish it for her child? I’m using baby-terry yarn with 115 knits across… I’m slow. It takes me 10 minutes to do a row! Only 4 more skeins to go and I’m finished. If Ulysses were my husband, I’d be in good shape.

Hmmm…. now I’m “un” inspired. lol! Although I was always pretty good at finishing needlepoint projects. But for that kind of time investment, I’d like to be able to wear the finished product (how many needlepoint belts do I need?).

          • AnnS says:
            17 March 2015 at 8:10 pm

Don’t let me bring you down! Partly it’s b/c my daughter’s always jumping on me, and I can’t have needles in my hands. Or because she’s trying to imitate me knitting and almost knocks projects off the needle, so I have to keep my knitting away. One of these days I’ll pick it up again with earnest. I want to learn how to do hats. But I’d love to do a big gorgeous shawl with some wonderful yarn and not the cheap stuff I use now.

          • Bexca says:
            17 March 2015 at 8:49 pm

Could you repurpose the yarn for hats or doll/baby sweaters? Since they’re completed faster, you get a sense of accomplishment sooner.

Three of my four grandparents are of Irish extraction (Ó Dochartaigh, Powers, and Strahan), so it shouldn’t matter whether I’m wearing green today, right? Granted, they all seem to have come to the colonies before or shortly after the Revolution, but still. Irish is Irish.

I have this problem sometimes, too. I think to myself, “People would think I was insane, being unable to pick a scent from this big old collection.” And maybe I am…

But, I had that same problem this morning, and now that I was reminded by the lovely NSTers that it’s St. Patrick’s Day, it has narrowed my choices to green fragrances. So Balmain Vent Vert, Cristalle EDT, or vintage Balmain Ivoire. But still, I also kind of want to wear Beige. Or Fille de Berlin….UGH, choices!

Not insane, it’s harder to make a choice when there are so many good options! And you smell lovely – Cuir de Lancome is a favorite, and it is especially nice at the end of the day when I think it’s worn off but I notice a wonderful smell – hey, it’s me 😉

Thanks! I do love this one. It was a decant from missionista from the last freebie meet, and I’m so glad to have discovered it. It really does feel special to me: introspective, like it encourages being slow and reflective rather than rushing about.

Totally forgot it was St. Patrick’s Day until after I left the house this morning, so I’m not in any sort of green, sartorially or olfactorily. And I even have a sample of Demeter Clover. It would have been perfect for today.

Anyway, I’m wearing the lovely Byredo 1996, which I got in the last split-meet. Love it. It’s smelling slightly different today than it did the last couple times I’ve worn it. Usually the labdanum is dominant, and I just get a bit of the iris, but today it seems more balanced, and I’m getting more of the iris. It’s like amber with makeup, and I really like it.

You all kindly reminded me today is St. Patrick’s Day but I am still undecided on my fragrance. I’m between Cristalle, Vent Vert, and vintage Balmain Ivoire. It’s kind of a damp spring day, so green scents are great, but I also wouldn’t mind wearing Beige or Fille de Berlin (which for some reason I love on a rainy day). Why is it so hard to decide?

Hermes Cuir d’Ange. Since I got my 15ml bottle (eBay), I am wearing only this. I never really liked heliotrope (not even in L’Eau d’Hiver) and don’t have another leather fragrances in my collection, but this is just perfect.

We’re back to chilly, ‘typical’ March weather here today, but the sun is shining and the snow is totally gone, so I don’t mind the cold at all. The change in weather requires a scent with more heft than greens, so I chose SSS. To Dream, definitely old-school French. Lovely and complex, but almost a bit too heavy for today, guess I’m already in a ‘think spring’ mood. Will keep this as one of my winter violet scents.

Still in Rome and still wearing samples. Today, Seville a l’Aube, the best orange-flower I ever smelled.

Didn’t get to any perfumeries but I did buy a box of Leone orange-flower pastilles, which smell EXACTLY like the flower (but taste mostly of sugar).

THe Leone Orange Flower Pastilles are my favorite! I hassle people to bring them back for me anytime they go overseas. I know you can probably buy them online but it’s such a treat, I almost don’t want to. And yes, they smell exactly like orange flowers but the taste is mostly sugar. A fleeting, sweet treat. Sometimes I hate to even eat them!

Wearing Tonka Imperiale now and then probably Mitzah after I shower. I’m making a last grab at neglected bottles that won’t see light of day once the weather warms up.

Any recs for a sheer, realistic, pink rose? Goutal’s Ce Sour ou Jamais is close, but I’d like something a little less dusky for springtime. I thought Rose Ikebana was ‘it’ and even have a travel size, but it’s just not working for me. Any thoughts?

I’m not the one to tell you about sheer roses because I like them either big and brash or crepuscular and a bit scary (Lutens roses, the smutty La Nuit de Paco Rabanne, the inky Rossy de Palma) but Demeter Bulgarian Rose is a very light, fresh, slightly soapy rose that might work for you. I gave it to a friend and she adored it.

Everyone’s rec’s are all good. I love all of them. I’d also suggest Delire de Roses by Caron (kind of spendy to get a fresh rose), and Early Roses by Teo Cabanel, and especially if you are looking for something very light and not too expensive, L’Occitane 4 Rienes and Crabtree and Evelyn’s Rosewater.

I’ve always liked the concept of pairing perfumes to a specific color. My perfume-cupboard was once arranged according to my own set color schemes as well:Paco Rabanne Mētal:Green,Portrait of a Lady:Deep purple etc…When I think of Pink roses-not neccesarily sheer but realistically pink,I’d recommend these ones:
1.Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile(pretty sheer as well!)
2.Frederic Malle Une Rose-really realistic, and imho,a pretty realistic darker fragrant rose.
3.Crabtree and Evelyn Evelyn Rose:Pretty fantastic, and to me a dewy freshly picked darkish pink fragrant option!
4.Ultimately sheer/light and a softer shade of pink:another C&E:Rosewater.makes me wanna do a cleansing spa ritual with pink-petals in the bathtub!Lol!
      Hope this help a bit!;-))

I’m stocked up on light sheer roses at the moment (Parfums de Rosine Rose d’Ete, which I love, and one of the Paris springtime LE flankers) – but when they’re gone, I’m planning to get Teo Cabanel Early Roses. So gorgeous.

Or Parfums DelRae Coup de Foudre, that’s pretty too.

I put on Chanel No 19 early this morning when it was nice and not cold outside, dreaming of balmy spring. But this afternoon I had to update with Safari b/c it’s green and warm. It got cold again and now it’s actually snowing. ;-( My hubbie has Irish (or some sort of Viking marauder via Irish blood in him). And also English, so he’s kind of a pale mess of stubborn and polite. I, on the other hand, and screaming mad with a dash of super stubborn Scottish blood (along with the rest of my European soup). Argh! Thank goodness we get along!

I’m not bothering with wearing green today. If you can’t tell by looking that I’m of Irish extraction then something’s wrong 😉
Unfortunately, my allergies have been torturing me this week and I haven’t been wearing much fragrance. We are currently in the middle of our two weeks of spring, and summer will be here in a flash. The neighbors already have their air conditioners on and we should but I’m too stubborn. Things are beginning to get that lovely yellow-green coat of pollen.
I decided today to try out Copal Azur again and remain underwhelmed. I want that diesel exhaust copal smoke scent not bright, sweet, chirpy incense (yeah, I know it isn’t supposed to smell like copal but I still object). Think I’ll scrub soon and spray on some Trefle Pur since I couldn’t resist one of those ginormous bottles.

Holy Cow! Another day and another uncomfortable,
stressful meeting, just one in a who slew of them related to unprofessional behavior (no, I’m not the guilty party! lol) and I find this kind of conflict really disabling and beyond uncomfortable. Ugh!

However, it is St Patrick’s Day and I’m half Irish on my fathers side, who was born and raised in SW Cork on the Beara Peninsula. Beautiful area for dreamers like me who prefer to walk through pastures filled with sheep, cows and horses than deal with crazy bi-pedals!

I knew it was going to be a tough day after a night of no sleep, so I hit up Andy Tauer and my true love PHI Un Rose de Kandahar. One spritz from 6AM and I still smell it wafting- so soothing!

Stress at work (the usual) and stress at home (remodeling — everything’s a mess!) left me unable to even process the fact that it’s St. Paddy’s today. I went with a default spritz of Covet this morning — at least the bottle is a weird sort of (yellow)green, right? — and counted on my red hair and blue eyes to prove my Irishness.

I think the remodeling is even harder on my cats than it is on me: my boy is sulking under the dining room table and refusing to eat his supper. Feliway doesn’t seem to help, unfortunately…

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Sous le toit de Paris

I was going to do a week of Figgy Friday but was a week too early! So I’m going to try to do nouveau niche the rest of the week. A search of niche vs. indie yielded Atelier Cologne which was founded in 2010. I may end up wearing AC perfumes for the next few days.

As for the Irish, one can’t escape it in NYC. Walking to the office this morning, I saw people dressed up to party, a bunch of bagpipers in their regalia and Fifth Avenue had barricades all over with many of the side streets closed to traffic. I wore a green blazer although it was not the traditional shade.
