Friday scent of the day 3/13

Posted by Robin on 13 March 2015 272 Comments

L'Artisan Parfumeur Passage d'Enfer

Happy Friday (the 13th). Our community project for today: Old School Niche...wear a perfume from L'Artisan Parfumeur, Diptyque or Frederic Malle. Double bonus points if the fragrance was released before 2010! What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you aren't participating.

I'm wearing L'Artisan Parfumeur Passage d'Enfer (1999; Olivia Giacobetti).

Reminder: next Friday, 20 March, we're doing Nouveau Niche: wear a perfume from a new (2010+) niche brand.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I bought a bottle of that in Marshall’s in the ’80s and often wore it to work. Eventually my boss told me it was the scent his wife had bought for him a few years earlier. We smelled good!

I must confess that I bought a bottle of it last night at TJM for $12.99, what a bargain! However, it smells more flowery now than what I remember from back in the 80’s. Still very good, loving the far dry down as we speak.
Not sure yet if I will reapply, but probably will… :)

Roll up, roll up ladies and gentlemen, the greatest show on earth is about to begin!

Be amused! Be amazed! Be astounded and astonished by the daredevilry and acts of buffoonery and bewilderment before you. Experience exhilaration and euphoria as the trapezists soar skilfully through the air. Giggle and guffaw at the jesters tumbling tomfoolery. Scratch your heads in wonderment as our puzzling prestidigitators attempt to beguile and bamboozle you. Gasp as fearless fire-eaters devour colossal conflagrations. And tremble with trepidation as the creature cognoscenti endeavour to tame beastly behemoths from exotic empires. We even have a lady riding a tiger – yes, ladies and gentlemen, a tiger!

So step right up, come on in and settle down with your candy floss and toffee apples, close your eyes and get ready to breathe in a crazy cornucopia of delectable delights. Ladies and gentlemen, Mesdames et Messieurs, I present to you…

    Dzing!

Alas, I have no fragrances from any of these iconic brands so my niche scent today will have to be from Annick Goutal. I know many might not consider AG niche today but when I discovered this line in the early 90s it wasn’t so easy to obtain and I always found the scents to be a bit out of the mainstream. I consider AG old niche b/c her first fragrance release was Folavril (1981). Today I am wearing one of my favorites Eau De Camille….the ivy and seringa is perfect for the weather that is FINALLY out of single digits! have a wonderful weekend, all!

AG is on her own planet – definitely niche, beyond niche. I’d imagine her nature inspired fragrances have inspired many other houses. She was doing transparent natural florals that disappear in short order waaay before anyone else was doing them! I love Goutal!

yes, Ann, from our conversations on other posts I kind of figured you were a fan as well :) !! I am more familiar with the old stuff : Folavril, Ciel, Camille, Charlotte, Passion, Gardenia Passion, Sud, Hadrien, Ce Soir, Grand Amour, Petite Cherie and Chevrefeuille which was the last FB I purchased when it first came out. I wrote about this in another thread but years ago when I lived in a more metropolitan area the dept store that carried AGs would do BOGOs several times a year and basically you would get two 3.4 oz bottles for ninety dollars……at one point I think I owned about 20 bottles (which have all since been drained). I am not familiar with the current offerings and since it is no longer accessible I haven’t really sought them out….

Oh, gosh- my hears pounds! A BOGO on AG??!! Well, I can only say that the ability to find some AG on deep discounters online kind of gets to the same place, but certainly not as elegant and experience. The “newest” of the AGs that I have are Rose Splendide and Ninfeo Mio, which both came out a few years ago. I don’t think there are as many releases from AG now – maybe spending a lot of time re-doing the line for the relaunch, new bottles, updated formulas, etc. I would like to test the new tea one coming out this year. Oh, and I’ve sampled Nuites Etoilee, and am not sure how I feel about it. But I do have 19 bottles of AG classics already! So I have plenty to keep me occupied.

No worries about the typing (I got the drift :) ) and do feel better…
yes, I read about the tea one..it is being marketed as unisex….I was intrigued b/c of the osmanthus note (love osmanthus…even the essential oil straight up is pure perfume to my nose!). I am really trying to be good and not buy anything until I start draining some bottles-LOL!

Tam Dao EDP, in all of its woody glory. This scent is so effortless; I have yet to find a situation in which it doesn’t work.

Also, a question – wouldn’t Serge count as old-school niche by now as well? I thought he started before Frederic Malle did, but I could be wrong.

SOTD Diptyque 34 Boulevard Saint Germain. I sampled this a while ago and liked it, but not enough to re-sample, so this is a great reason to give it another whirl. I am going with a heavier hand so let’s see…! I had smelled a really heavy, spicy Diptyque fragrence in a store once but can’t remember what it was and never did get to try it! Thoughts anyone? It was shockingly spicy and incense-y and I did not sample it right then and there because I was on lunch break from an offsite work meeting.

Was this a long time ago? The most “shocking” knock the socks off, may even be stronger than Aromatics Elixir type, Diptyque I think of is L’Eau Trois which is a real take no prisoners balsam, resins, spices, incense. More recently? I don’t know?

I think you tried Volutes. Love it! If you decide to try, test both – EdT and EdP: they smell different and you might prefer one or the other (I like EdT more).

I got 34 Boulevard Saint Germain travel spray as GWI at Diptyque’s boutique and didn’t even think about it until I tried it – and unexpectedly liked a lot. Probably not enough to go for a bottle of it but enough to enjoy the travel spray from time to time.

On me, the Shiseido version is woody (cedar) and fruity (plum and raspberry-although not listed) while the SL is more cedar/cumin, not always in a good way. But that’s just me…

You are absolutely correct! The cedar note in the Shiseido is much nicer and makes me like it. But naturally because it is hard to find! I have a suspicion that there is cedar in both but different kinds! This is major news! One is more like cedar shavings and the other is more animalic and cuminesque. There are hundreds of different cedars so who knows which one they use in these fragrances…..

I’m wearing Premier Figuier today. I got one of the L’Artisan discovery sets late last year, and so far I’ve only tried Mure et Musc. I wanted to try this one for the fig. Maybe I just don’t like fig. The only other fig that I have is a sample of the solid Pacifica Mediterranean Fig, which I don’t like. They both smell soapy and a little musty to me.

I’m with you, I don’t much care for fig either. But it’s often described as “milky” and I’m a sucker for anything milky/creamy, so I keep getting pulled back in, even though I totally agree about the mustiness.

I hate fig leaf. I mean, I REALLY Hate Fig Leaf. Didn’t know that for sure until after I’d tried Philosykos and Premier Figuier, but there is something horribly bitter and unpleasant about it and every time I encounter fig leaf elsewhere I have a knee-jerk UGH NO reaction.

(Got supremely suckered by Oriza L LeGrand’s green floral Deja Le Printemps, where the description I read mentioned green leaves but didn’t say that some of them were FIG leaves. ;) Green florals are my very favorite genre, so I was not expecting to find the Dreaded Fig Leaf in it – but there it was, making the fragrance completely unwearable for me.)

I like fig briefly – it does have a nice milky quality – but then I want it to go away. My fav “fig” is the AG Ninfeo Mio, but I get tons more citrus, boxwood and musks from that than the fig which only appears for a few mintues.

Ninfeo Mio…yes! Some figs are too coconutty for me and become cloying after awhile. Ninfeo Mio is fresh and bracing, and I don’t get the dreaded cat pee note that some people experience.

Every once it a while the boxwood migrates over to cat pee, but I just try to tell my nose to ignore it and think about the ivy and musk accords and ususally I can deal. If that accord were any stronger, NM wouldn’t work for me. I loathe boxwood hedges even though they always look so nice. I really think NM captures that cool woody old garden vibe well. It is definitely unique.

I dislike it wherever I smell it, sorry. It’s only truly unbearable on me, though.

Someone recently gave me a candle produced by a company that just moved into our town, very nice of them… no label on it, or maybe it was some nondescript label like someone’s name, can’t remember. Anyway, no notes list or anything, but THERE WAS FIG LEAF IN IT along with some florals and a light vetiverlike wood. No way was I going to burn that thing in my house. I gave it to my SIL, who thinks it’s nice.

I think you’re more in the majority, really. Those few of us who dislike fig just seem to dislike it intensely. I don’t mind the fruit; for me it’s just the leaf.

(FWIW, I love to eat dried figs – have never managed to eat a fresh one. Well, to FIND fresh ones, actually. You can’t find them where I live, not even at the fancy grocery stores.)

Mals I love fresh figs! My local supermarket is really getting on the ball with exotic fruits/veggies and tons of organics (I buy alot of that!) and they started stocking fresh figs last summer…the texture inside takes some getting used to but I just wash and eat them!

and as an aside, when did Plum become so readily accessable? on a whim I googled it (last time I looked many online retailers were no longer carrying it) and I found it on amazon for 47 dollars! I read a few reviews that went either way so I am not sure about buying unsniffed if it smells like grape jam.., white flowers on the other hand are right up my alley.(although i keep saying no more bottles!) Also, have you tried Lemon? if so how is it?

WHAAAAAT?? Plum back on Amazon at a discount? Which, yay, accessible… and yet, does that mean that it’s on its way out? Eep.

I get zero grape out of it. In fact, it doesn’t smell like plums to me either, unless you mean the yellow ones you can eat in Europe. (I don’t think we grow them here. Or can’t import them, or something.) Plum is largely floral on me, but in a gentle sense. The top is very TART fruity/citrusy, then the flowers – there’s rose in there along with tuberose and jasmine – and then a soft woody base with a bit of moss. It is not really a chypre to me, although it has more moss than, say, another modern chypre like Coco Mlle has. And it doesn’t have the glorious drydown that so many of those old florals did.

It’s all about the flowers on me, but that’s okay, because *I* am all about the flowers too. :)

I have not tried Lemon. A friend bought it and says it’s quite pleasant – not simply citrus, but also floral, with a naughty streak under the skirts somewhere. Mind you, this was the friend that described Secretions Magnifique to me as “straight-up boy juice.”

Mals- funny thing is I was asked this morning if I needed anything from Amazon and I almost said “Yes a bottle of Plum EDP please” but then I knew I would get the “don’t you have ENOUGH perfume already?”….after I posted the price here I thought to myself, by the time I get to order it it will be sold out!

SOTD is Diptyque Philosykos (I’m always tempted to call it Philosophykos!)

I have a couple of spritz from a decant that *I think* is from the EDT on my left arm, and some EDP on the right arm. So far, I can smell the EDT better (I hope it’s not a “reformulation made it weaker” kind of problem!). What are your opinions on the differences between the two? (I see a full bottle of one of them in my future!)

I found the EDP a little too sweet and intense; the structure doesn’t seem to support the extra weigh. Too bad, because Philosykos lasts about 20 minutes on me. I do love it, but it lasts much better on my husband.

That’s too bad! I’d say it last average on me; I haven’t noticed it being unusually long-lasting (like some Tom Ford’s or Tauer’s are on me), nor does it disappear very fast.

Yes, that is the EDT I gave you, and it was from a bottle purchased in the mid-2000’s, so sort of vintage. :-) Best to go down to Holt Renfrew and smell the current version of EDT before making up your mind. :-)

Oh, thank you Cazaubon! I’m almost at the last drops of the decant and I really enjoyed having it. I have a Holt Renfrew gift card, so I was thinking it was the best justification to finally get the bottle, but I’ll make sure to give the new version some skin time before I do.

Double bonus points for both of us, scent twin here with Diptique Philosykos, 1996, the quintessential fig fragrance. I’m wearing the edt, less intense (less sweet, more green) than the edp, long-lasting for an edt and suits me just fine!

My reaction to the two seems different to others… I find the EDT to be quite milky with a sweet coconut aspect. Its bright and happy. It was the first fig scent I ever smelled and is still my favourite! The EDP smells more WOODY to me and has a drier undertone and does not have the same casual levity. Though it’s heavier in tone I find it to have less sillage than the EDT, and also to last less well. The EDT has average to good longevity on me and my bottle is about 5 years old :)

Yeah, Vanilia is toast. They replaced it with Havana Vanille, which I found WAY too sweet, and then renamed it Vanille Absolument (and I think reformulated it too). Treasure your Vanilia because I don’t know of anything that’s quite like it. So so gorgeous.

Eau Duelle edt kept me very happy yesterday. I’ve used up nearly half of my 1.7 oz bottle, and I keep getting nervous that if I wait too long to get a replacement, they will no longer make it. Unreasonable perfumista anxiety!

No, I don’t think that’s unreasonable at all! It’s a very unusual vanilla fragrance and really versatile. It has all the hallmarks of “vanilla” for us vanilla lovers, but without being heavy and cloying, which why most “non-vanilla” people like it. AND it’s done in such a refreshing, jaunty manner.

I am endorsing the BUB plan!

Exactly why I like it! It’s kind of hard to wear heavy oriental type vanillas down here in Swamplandia. This is a vanilla I can wear year round. I prefer the edp to the edt as it seems just a bit deeper and richer without losing any of the freshness and lightness. I really should get a bottle- it so easy to talk myself into it! ;)

It’s a good bottle to have. But since you cannot usually get any discounts on this brand, it’s better to get it either from a friendly SA (if you have one) or from the big online store when they have some special event – to get additional “goodies” with the purchase. It means you do not really *need* to get it right away – start hunting for a good deal!
          Did I help? ;)

I’m thinking of just biting the bullet and spend the money on Sarrasins or Iris Silver Mist. A La Nuit only goes so far but I also want the carroty, hissy iris. What scares me after doing the currency conversion, I would spend almost $100 more on any one of the ones I want. Serge should release the whole line in th 1.7 ounce bottle.

L’ombre dans l’Eau for ever; time when Diptyque was a location you had just heard about, down by boulevard Saint germain, somehow hippy, somehow chic, with the most delicate giftwrap in papier de soie coloré…it already was a concentrate of Ellena’s talent, garden’s, air, water, black current and tomato, crushed leaves and fig tree, an illsuin of the chic-est journey…Merci Diptyque, merci monsieur Ellena

L’Eau du Navigateur L’Artisan Parfumeur – coffee, myrrh, evergreen shrubbery, cedarwood, and smoke. Evokes Christmas for me, but not so heavy that it could not be worn in warm weather (not that it is warm here). Smells great!!

If I may, a little OT first world complaint. Does Chanel care about marketing, or cultivating a positive relationship with their customers?

I’ve wanted to sample Misia and sent an email to request one from Chanel.com.
No response – at all. Now I’ve pointed out in my email that I’ve purchased twice from Chanel.com, and don’t really want to visit a boutique. Chanel has sent me unsolicited samples of the ‘new’ Eau Premiere (appreciated) and skin care and lipgloss (appreciated, and given to friends). You would think someone would put 2 and 2 together and get 4. I MIGHT BUY their outrageously expensive scent if I could smell it.

Plus, when I go on *bay and look at some auctions, it seems some of the Chanel SAs are selling the samples (view seller’s other listings and everything is a Chanel product, sample size). HHHRRMMPPPPHHH!!!

Now I need to DRINK more coffee, to remove my crankiness, and match my SOTD. ;)

OMG – you can *always* tell when one of the Chanel SA’s has rampaged through the drawers and decides to put it all on *bay!!! It’s pure madness- “look at the other items in my store” – ha. B***S!!! I mean, it’s nice access for some of us depending on what it is and how much they warn to charge, but really. It’s a dead giveaway. (And normally a good way to tell they aren’t fakes, right?) But what a joke. I’m with you on this Bear – madness indeed. You should be able to get good samples from Chanel.com. It just shows how mad the whole sales and marketing model for fragrances has become. You should try and call Nordstrom Seattle b/c *normally* their frag department people are pretty good and they carry the LEs, but who knows if they are pulling back too. Good luck. And crank on!

Bear, do you have a Nordstrom account? If so, I recommend calling the flagship Seattle Chanel counter for all Exclusif (and other) samples and purchases. Don’t live anywhere near there, but I did buy my 31 RC from them. Every time I’ve called, the SAs have been generous with samples. It helps to be specific–one time they sent samples I had to re-home!

I was thinking about Philosykos for today, since I didn’t wear a Giacobetti last week, but when I went to choose this morning, Iris Poudre was calling to me. It’s just so pretty.

I dug out my sample of Portrait of a Lady, which I think is gorgeous in small doses.

I dabbed on some Safari this morning, not having sniffed or worn it since the late 80s. Wow, what a difference. My memory is trying to scrub the original and adapt to the new. Don’t know how I feel about it yet.

My SOTD: Angéliques Sous La Pluie by Frederic Malle, which is ideal for this super warm day we’re having. It’s the perfume equivalent of a pimm’s cup, with maybe a dash of sweat thrown in for good measure (um…yum?).

I’m wearing L’Artisan Safran Troublant today – I always want to like this more than I actually do. A little too simple and light for my old-school nose.

Forgot to collect my bonus points – Giacobetti, 2002. ;-)

Yes! I wish there was an emoticon for the 3 goggles! I’d be using it. :-D

I find that Safran Troublant has more body and staying power than most other Giacobettis: it is light but doesn’t read as pale or wispy, which is why I love it so much. It lasts hours and hours on me.

I agree – I’ve got a nice spicy vanilla going now. But it reminds me very much of my Terracotta Voile d’Ete so I don’t think I’ll need a bottle of this.

La Chasse aux Papillons, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Anne Flipo, 1999. Breathtaking.

Like a butterly went, “Oh, you’re tired of winter? Well then, BAM! Here’s instant spring for your nose.”

Late to the party today, didn’t put on any scent until the evening. I’m falling asleep on the sofa in a cloud of Une Fleur de Cassie.

So I went to go see Cinderella today, and wore Princess. Yes yes, I’m a dork. Haha! Sorry for not participating, but had to share my silliness. Lol!

Not silly at all, I’m taking my Little Ones tomorrow and was wishing I had ‘Princess’ to wear (but don’t) so, see, you’re not the only silly dork. :-). Not sure what I will wear, will have to find something to suit the fairytale theme. How did you like the movie? I saw the coming attractions and they were enchanting and the reviews are good. I’m really lookng forward to it!

Hey thanks! Haha! What about Fantasy or one of the Taylor Wonderstrucks? Lol! Sorry for my juvenile taste!

I thought it was very cute. Your kiddos will love it, and I hope you do too! I’m 24 and I found myself smiling with joy when she transformed for the ball. Lol! And Cate Blanchett, enough said right? Ha!

Writing this on Saturday in the morning at 9.30, so Friday 13 has already been here: I was wearing another l’artisan: oeillet sauvage. I bought that bottle after one sniff but also Dzing at the same time.

Haven’t been around for a while, so I wasn’t aware of Old School Day. Nevertheless, I wore Parfum de Therese. Best friend wore La Haie Fleurie. Old school enough?
