Thursday scent of the day 3/12

Posted by Robin on 12 March 2015 160 Comments

lilac

Happy Thursday! What's your fragrance today?

I'm wearing Frédéric Malle En Passant (perfumer Olivia Giacobetti, 2000) and wishing the weather matched my fragrance.

Reminder: tomorrow, 13 March, we're doing Old School Niche: wear a perfume from L'Artisan Parfumeur, Diptyque or Frederic Malle. Double bonus points if the fragrance was released before 2010!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

The happy, sugared almond confection of Jour de Fete today (Giacobetti AGAIN!). It’s grey and cold here in the UK. I wish the weather would match my fragrance too…

I’ve been wearing mostly L’Artisan and Diptyque this week in honor of Friday’s scent of the day (I don’t have much Malle). Yesterday it was Diptyque Olene, and today LAP Mure et Musc. These seem like spring/summer fragrances to me, and I’m so glad its finally warm enough for them here in Virginia!

Carnal Flower–hey, the sun is out & it’s supposed to be in the 50s. Stopped in at the orchid show yesterday at the Botanic Garden. I’d forgotten that vanilla is an orchid variety. Shalimar was featured on a chart tracing vanilla’s history, plus they had a scent table set up of various orchid essences (plus the Shalimar). The essences were under glass domes, connected to those darned bulb atomizers (you squeeze to sniff)–I couldn’t get them to work!

If you scroll down thru NST’s Lazy Weekend poll, https://nstperfume.com/2015/02/21/lazy-weekend-poll-open-thread-late-february-2015/ you will see I had the exact same experience as you (except I got the bulbs to work) several weeks ago!

Guessing they don’t refresh the essences through the course of the show. Will try to go closer to the opening next time.

I’m testing Misia again from my sample but trying it side by side with Histoires de Parfums Moulin Rouge, which I think of as being another sort of powderey makeup-like scent. There is a little similarity, but Moulin Rouge is just bigger and has a good dose of patchouli that hasn’t seemed as prominent when I’ve worn it before.

I must try Moulin Rouge now. I have recently taken a liking to HDP and have always had a weak spot for ‘makeup’ scents.

I sampled Chanel Misia, and I immediately noticed the similarity to HDP Moulin Rouge. I’m still sampling, but so far I like Moulin Rouge better. Misia is very beautiful, but I love the earthiness of Moulin Rouge.

It’s finally raining again here in the Pacific Northwest, and I wanted something to blend with the smell of ozone and new growth in the air. So I’m in the lovely Bel Respiro, layered over Crabtree and Evelyn’s Iris body lotion. I’m green and iris-y!

Someone on here wore Mitsouko yesterday and that put it into my head so I wore it today. The weird thing is that I can see how people might hate its aggressive oddness but it’s gorgeous to me. It’s not Nefertiti, it’s Dora Maar.

My vet called me about Sunny. It seems that he had Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is heart condition some indoor cats develop. the vet said that often there is no warning, the cat simply dies. I just wish he had been at home when it happened. I needed something comforting today, so I chose Cabaret, for the rose notes.

So sorry to hear this, but I’m glad at least that the vet was able to give you an answer. Our 9-year-old cat was diagnosed with this a few months ago almost by accident (they were doing an ultrasound for a completely different problem) but he has had no symptoms at all, so it’s something we wouldn’t have known about.

I’m glad you at least have some answers as to what happened, and now know it was nothing you could have known or done anything about. I know it doesn’t stop the grieving – nothing but time diminishes that – so take as much comfort and care for yourself as possible. Cabaret is a terrific rose!

Oh, Priscilla, that is so sad. It’s very interesting to me though, b/c the beloved cat I had years ago just up and died right in front of me for no reason (also an inside cat, about 3 years old). It was horrible and heartbreaking. I never knew what happened and didn’t have the money or heart to generate an autopsy for him. But this is very helpful information. I wonder if this is what was wrong with him. Best wishes to get over your loss.

Apparently this condition often occurs in quite young cats, often between 1 and 5 years of age. The vet said that the only thing that would have been of help in diagnosis would have been an ultrasound, and being a small town vet, this isn’t something he could have provided. I am so sorry you have lost a cat so suddenly too.

I’m trying Oyedo on the back of my hand again (tried it last night). It would be FB-worthy, except that I don’t like thyme in perfume. Thyme makes perfume smell like disinfectant — thymol is the key ingredient in those foul-smelling disinfectant wipes from Seventh Generation and other disinfecting products.

LOL! I love the smell of those wipes (and the fact that they have much less of chemical ingredients than the Clorox wipes do). But then again I love thyme in everything…I even make a “tea” with thyme and honey 🙂 !

Hee, hee. My house is full of Seventh Generation products, but not the wipes. They gave a tub of the wipes at work and whenever someone uses them, the smell lingers forever.

I like thyme in seasonings like Herbes de Provence.

I agree, hajusuuri, the orange was a bit better and I also cannot find it anymore….wonder if it was discontinued? OM goodness…here I am lamenting about discontinued disinfectant wipes! It was equally as bad when I experienced disappointment that my health food store only had one bottle of Meyers Limited Edition Cranberry Dish soap (which I really wanted to stock up on b/c it smelled exactly like an old Escada I really loved). Has anyone else ever bought cleaning products only b/c it reminded them of a favorite perfume or am I the only crazy one who does this?

I’ve purchased cleaning products that I don’t need (meaning I already have a bottle of something that accomplishes the same thing) because they smelled good. How many countertop sprays do I need?

Perhaps that Cranberry soap will return in the winter?

Target and Wegmans are all out the last time I went (just last week). I do tend to stockpile since this is the only kind of disinfecting wipe I’m comfortable using bare-handed.

Rubj extrait. I’m getting the very faintest of occasional wisps of spice, but if there’s anything dirty or musky here, it’s totally lost on me–certainly nothing that makes this feel inappropriate for work. Still, I applied very lightly just in case everyone else is smelling something I can’t.

Today I’m wearing Frédérik Malle Iris Poudre, which was created by Pierre Bourdon in 2000. I have a 5 ml. manufacturer’s decant from a generous NST swapper, but it’s on my FB list once the decant is gone. (I love the short squat shape of the Malle 5 ml. decants! Just right for tucking into a purse.)

SOTD is Balenciaga Le Dix. Today i’m wearing the edt I’ve had a few years (I’m not sure if it’s vintage or even what ‘vintage’ is for a scent that dates back to 1947?) but its violet/aldehydes/woods loveliness reminds me of falling in love with it the first time I smelled it and falling in love with violet, which has become a favorite fragrance note for me. Le Dix was one the long-forgotten perfume minis I wrote about some time ago finding accidentally while cleaning out a closet shelf. I still have some of the vintage perfume remaining, which I will treat myself to for Classic Film night tonight. And, luckily, I have another perfume mini as backup, now that Le Dix is officially d/c and getting difficult to find.

I loved Le Dix! I had a large spray bottle of EDT that I got in a discount store for under ten dollars in the late 80s….by then it wasn’t so popular….as a young girl I always loved violet notes but could never find a violet perfume, until Le Dix. If you really like violet as a fragrance note Sonoma Scent Studio has some wonderful violet fragrances (To Dream, Wood Violet, Voil De Violettes, Lieu de Reves) that I would highly recommend.

bardot, I suspect you and I are of the same ‘vintage.’ :-). I do love SSS Wood Violet (wore it yesterday) as wee as the Voile. Have samples of the Dream and Lieu but have not tried them yet. I have many violet scents stemming from my love of Le Dix, including AG La Violette and Guerlain’s Les Meteorites, two of my favorites. Also, vintage Worth Je Reviens is a dreamy kind of violet to me, one of my 5 favorite scents of all time.

I also remember Je Reviens but never had a bottle….if you decide you love SSS Lieu de Reve get a FB soon b/c it is in the “archives” now (probably b/c it s so similar to To Dream….I also wanted to mention another violet love of mine (although there are other florals in this one my nose smells the violet) -1000 Flowers Love is Sweet. Based on your loves above this one might very well appeal to you.

Wearing Rose Ikebana today. Such a happy scent.

Have to share a fragrant experience from yesterday. We got an Ulta flyer in the mail, with several perfume paper strips inside. They were in the house for a few hours and I threw them away when I got home (my husband gets migraines from scent, so I just wear scent at work). One of the samples was Angel AND Alien on the same piece (2 flaps). The scent was so overpowering in the house, even with it in the trash can, that my husband got a headache and I had to take the trash out! My husband likened it to “chemical warfare” and said he would rather smell dirty diapers than perfume (and we are very familiar with that scent, having 19 month old twins)!

And it wasn’t even opened! I know better than that 😉 Seriously powerful stuff. The pages of the flyer were also ingrained with the scent. I get these Ulta things all the time with perfume strips, but never this fragrant.

SOTD is Jo Malone Orange Blossom. Inspired by some of your comments about your ”sampling methodology”, I spent the week testing orange blossom fragrances. I started with l’AP Séville à l’Aube (which I thought was too sweet the first time I wore it, but found perfect this time), followed by Ormonde Jayne Tiare (greener than what I wanted) and Frangipani Absolue. Frangipani had that plasticky touch to it that a lot of orange blossom/neroli fragrances have on my skin (or in my nose). For example, I can’t stand Elie Saab Le Parfum for that reason, same for l’Occitane Neroli & Orchidée. Anyone knows what causes that? (Since it doesn’t seem to be present in every orange blossom fragrances). My favourite, to date, is AC Grand Neroli.

Felt incense-y this morning, so sampling Heeley Cardinal.

Yesterday I tried SL De Profundis… oh my. Violets in the forest after the rain. Calm, cool, elegant. And I am not even a violet fan. But I liked this one from start to finish. I may have to spring for my first SL bell jar.

But what’s the deal with US pricing being so much greater than European pricing?? arg! Any suggestions on how to get around this, other than a trip to Paris, which is of course a fabulous idea, but *ahem* as a perfume cost-saving measure, it doesn’t exactly work out…

pixel, there is an ebay seller, Shop France, Inc. (shopfranceinc), who also has a shopping service. I’ve purchased Frederic Malle travel vials and other samples from her on ebay – you can see she has great feedback there – and used the shopping service once in the last year. I would use it again. The exchange rate is very favorable now – just sayin’. 🙂

Today I found and sampled Nuxe Prodigieux (never thought it would make it to Sweden). It started out way too sweet for me, but when it settled down it became quite delicious with a perfect balance between the floral accord and the dry vanilla in the base (didn’t get much coconut at all). Maybe it is the “pebbles” in the basenotes making their grounding magic :)?

“Pebbles” – I had to look the perfume up in Fragrantica to make sure I wasn’t misundertanding. How about lava? That would be an excellent base note for a smouldering hot date perfume. 😉

Yes, it has been. Today has a warm, almost coastal breeze, but it’s cloudy and grey and damp. This scent captures both elements, the moss bringing continually damp coastal rock and trees to mind, but with the herbal and bright fruity elements that keep it in spring rather than fall, to me at least.

Speaking of OLD school niche, I’m wearing a sample of Paul Poiret’s Parfums de Rosine Nuit de Chine, created in 1913. It is reminding me a lot of La Via del Profumo Sharif. Sharif is bold; Nuit de Chine is smoother and softer, and does not last very long. Both are wonderful. Nuit de Chine is perfect for a bright and beautiful almost spring day, when the bare landscape merits a soft, warm scent.

Going commando today. Woke up feeling anxious for no particular reason and picking a fragrance just seemed more anxiety inducing and we never want to feel like that about it! Started frantically making appointments for pets and vehicles, the violets need to be watered, there are two loads of laundry that need to be folded on the couch and now it is time to feed the dogs again and I am just sounding dull……and my Eclectus parrot, sensing my anxiety is yelling as loud and piercingly as she possibly can! Hallelujah!

Anxiety is running high in our house, too. No particular reason, just the way it is. I suspect that changing the clocks last weekend and the changing weather (it’s hot here today) is making things tense. I skip fragrance and other little details, too, when I need to give myself extra space to calm down.

One of our family projects is hand-feeding, hand-taming, and hand-training companion birds for a nearby bird shop. A few weeks ago we took a baby Eclectus back to the shop after having him for 5 weeks. He was adorable. Very mellow and calm, but he let us know when he wanted attention. Talk about loud! His squawk really got our attention.

I think the weather has affected some parrots this winter. My conure has plucked almost all his feathers out. I’ve tried everything to get him to stop and was feeling like an awful birdie momma. The person I take him to for his nail and wing trims said that she’s seen a lot of birds lately who have done exactly the same thing and the only thing she can think of is the bad winter with so many storms. Birds can sense bad weather and she’s thing that perhaps some of them have gotten stressed over it and reacted by plucking.
Anyway, Ecelctus are adorable and I’m not sure I’d be able to give one back after having it for over a month. What a fun family project.

Sophie is an awesome bird and I am very accepting of how loud parrots can be and that as a bird owner one is likely to get bitten, just not today! She likes dogs and small children and is normally very calm and sweet. Thank you for chiming in today Tiffanie and Poodle! Always good to have a plan!

I only tried Bois d’Iris once, but I don’t remember a lot of congruence between it and IP. Actually, IP isn’t all that irisy in my opinion, it seems to me to be more about the aldehydes and that wonderful fluffy drydown, where Bd’Iris seemed much drier, more irisy, and focused on wood. I’m looking forward to hearing how they strike you in a direct comparison.

I do love doing those – sometimes trying similar fragrances will point up some element or other I had missed before. It’s fun.

Karen, any email you received (and it did not come from us directly) is using our RSS feed (that’s basically the way it works). But I do not know what service you are using, or if the service has options for what time they send, etc. I did make suggestions for RSS email services when we stopped doing our own emails, so maybe you picked one of those:

            https://nstperfume.com/2014/01/11/if-you-are-receiving-the-daily-now-smell-this-newsletter-via-email/

If it is any help at all, the SOTD is usually posted between 9 and 10 am, eastern time USA. Very rarely I will be a little later, but I think it’s never past 11 am.

I know these particular Hermes have quite a lot of fans. I have the Ambre one but I find it quite fleeting on me so will probably trade it during the next swap meet. I wear Jardin Sur La Nil and Terre d’Hermes in the parfum strength and I find the fragrances from this house interesting and well made.
